Protests against rising cost of living sponsored – Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said some of the street protests against the rising cost of living in the country are sponsored.

Speaking on the floor of the Upper  Chamber on Tuesday, Akpabio said the protesters are not aware of the efforts by the senate and the Federal Government government to tackle the situation.

“You can see a lot of sponsored protests here and there but those people are not aware — most of those sponsored protesters are not aware of the kind of efforts made by this senate to tackle the situation together with the management team of the federal government,” he said.

“Unverified reports have it that State Governments in the last few months have received additional N30 billion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), outside their normal allocations from the federation account, to assist them in ameliorating the food situation.

“So we believe that every State Government should utilise the funds received towards ensuring that food is available.”

The Senate President also said the National Assembly will not approve anything that would not benefit the citizens.

There have been different protests in different parts of the country, with the latest on Monday in Ibadan, capital city of Oyo state.

Residents had also taken to the streets of Niger, Kano and Sokoto States to protest the prevailing economic hardship.

Shettima, Akume, Akpabio, Wike: hardship over soon

The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that it is on the right path to economic prosperity.

It acknowledged the hardship but reassured citizens that it would be over soon.

Vice President Kashim Shettima; Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike gave the ray of hope at different fora in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt at the weekend.

Shettima, at The Sun Newspapers Awards in Lagos on Saturday night, said a brighter future lay ahead for Nigerians through the economic reform policies.

He added that this will be made possible with shared commitment, mutual respect and open dialogue.

The vice president was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Stanley Nkwocha.

He said in a paper titled “Celebrating Excellence, Building Together: Our Commitment To Press Freedom And Media Development In Nigeria,” that the reforms, including his economic policies and investment in infrastructure, were already showing signs of positive results.

“The government is commencing the implementation of the Pulaku Initiative, a large-scale resettlement programme aimed at addressing the root causes of farmers-herders conflicts.

“The initiative will revitalise the affected communities through the construction of residences, roads, schools, and essential facilities.

“I inaugurated a steering committee to coordinate the implementation of the initiative in fulfilment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to improve the lives of all Nigerians,” he said.

Shettima also emphasised the crucial role the media must play in achieving this goal, calling for collaboration and a shared commitment to national progress.

He added that the media must not fail to play their roles as “watchdogs, truth-seekers, and the voices that inform and empower our citizens.”

He further noted President Tinubu’s commitment to a vibrant press, recognising that “a free and independent media is essential for a healthy democracy.”

While advocating press freedom, Shettima urged the media to uphold ethical standards, fact-check information, and avoid sensationalism.

Akume, who chaired The Sun Awards, said while nation-building is a collective endeavour, the citizens must support the government in its efforts to build a truly great country

The SGF said: “The Tinubu Administration shall remain steadfast in its commitment to building a brighter future for all Nigerians, under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“While progress may seem slow at times, the vision for a better tomorrow remains resolute. We shall soon navigate successfully the current economic challenges.”

Yesterday, at the opening session of the 2024 First Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in Abuja, where he represented President Tinubu, Akume said the country was looking up to the bishops to continue to encourage Nigerians as the government works assiduously to reposition the economy and end insecurity.

He said: “The season of Lent is an apt time to host this critical meeting as it is a period of profound reflection, prayer, fasting, and charitable giving which coincides with a challenging period of economic hardship in our nation which we are working to reverse.

“While bold economic reforms have been undertaken by this administration, resulting in short-term hardship, they are borne out of a deep-seated commitment to Nigeria’s long-term prosperity and stability.

“This administration inherited a daunting economic landscape, necessitating decisive action to alter our nation’s downward trajectory.

“With unwavering dedication, we are striving towards a prosperous, healthy, and globally competitive Nigeria.

“Given the critical situation, now more than ever before, we must remain steadfast, renewing our faith in God’s provision and protection.

“Amidst adversity, we must remain resolute, renewing our faith in God’s providence and walking in love as we support one another.

“This administration is steadfast in its resolve to enhance security, bolster the economy, and create opportunities for all Nigerians.

“We acknowledge the various hardships affecting nations across the world precipitated and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the escalating cost of living.

“However, we draw strength from our collective hope and diligent efforts of the government, private sector, religious organisations and others, trusting that through God’s grace, better days lie ahead

“As spiritual leaders, My Lord Bishops, we rely on your unwavering encouragement to the Nigerian populace.

“Your commitment to upholding integrity, offering sound counsel, and fostering constructive dialogue is deeply appreciated by the government.

“The church’s engagement with Nigerians on matters of faith enriches our responsiveness and strengthens our national fabric.

“Both church and government are aligned in our shared commitment to a brighter future for all Nigerians. Through strategic policies, well-thought-out initiatives and investments.

“Our administration aims to drive economic transformation, ensure security, enhance food production, harness natural resources, develop critical infrastructure, improve social services, foster economic diversification, and enhance governance efficiency.

“These efforts are geared towards building a prosperous, secure and inclusive Nigeria for all.

“Although the economic hardship and security challenges may seem daunting, let us continue to encourage one another in the Lord and pray without ceasing.

“Likewise, let us remember Galatians 6:9 which reminds us ‘not to become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.’”

‘Reforms only way to economic recovery’

In Rivers, Akpabio and Wike insisted that Tinubu’s economic policies were the only way to build a prosperous national economy.

They argued that the policies to turn around and address years of rot in the economic landscape were not miracles that could manifest in six months.

Akpabio and Wike spoke during a thanksgiving service by Senator Barry Mpigi to appreciate God for his electoral victory on February 25 last year in Koroma Tai Local Government Area.

Wike said though people complained that the reforms had put them in harsh economic positions, they remained the only way to take the country to its destination.

Wike, who spoke before the Senate President, chided some governors for blaming the hardship in the country on Tinubu.

He recalled that the same governors had praised the President for not interfering with the processes that resulted in their Supreme Court victories.

The minister, who is the immediate past governor of Rivers State, said President Tinubu needed the support of all stakeholders in the efforts to address the “inherited crisis” in the country.

Wike said: “I believe that God in his infinite mercy will give us the strength to work and continue to support Mr President. The decision of Mr. President is hard but if we are patient at the end of the day, we will get to where we want to go.

“It is funny that some people want him to bring a policy to change something that had spoilt many years ago within six months. Even if it is a miracle, it is difficult. What is required is to give him support.

“I seriously believe in the Renewed Hope Agenda. We are going to do everything to continue to support Mr. President.

“I watched after the Supreme Court verdicts; everybody that came out would say ‘I thank Mr President for not interfering’. But immediately that expired people are saying a different thing.

“I watched every governor after they thanked God, the next person was Mr. President. But just after two weeks, everything evaporated. Now it is Mr . ‘President we are dying.’”

He appealed to Nigerians not to lose hope.

Wike said: “Nigerians should not lose hope. Look at what we are doing in Abuja. It means that Mr President will do better. It is a sign of good things to come.

“People are saying Wike is doing well but it is because the President is in support of it. The President is committed to seeing that Nigerians have better lives.”

Wike also said that about 85 per cent of persons who secured victory in the past elections in Rivers State are still in his team.

He boasted that with such a force, he could no longer wait for the 2027 general election.

He added: “With the forces we have, I don’t know of anybody who will challenge us. It is like tomorrow is 2027. I cannot wait. The two leaders of the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) and APC are here.

“It is only in Rivers that you can find this unity. People don’t like it. So they do everything possible to make sure we are divided. But since we know, we have refused to be divided.”

‘We don’t know what to charge Emefiele with’

Akpabio, in an analogy, compared the poor economic condition Tinubu inherited to a bucket filled with foams while the under has a small quantity of water.

He said: “God has been able to merge us politically. What we need now is economic rejuvenation and I believe strongly that through President Tinubu God will answer our prayer.

“Nigeria was like a foam inside a pail or bucket containing a small quantity of water. As the foam filled the pail, you would think it had no water. By the time you push the foam down, your hands will only touch water.

“The kind of economic mess we were in a lot of people do not understand. The economic situation was tricky.

“We don’t even know what to charge the former Central Bank Governor (Godwin Emefiele) with. We don’t know whether to charge him for putting foam on top of a pail or to charge him for printing notes without income. I don’t know what we will charge him with.

“What we know is that we are here today because of the actions and policies that they took and we recognise that but we are now battling to ensure that Nigerians can sleep with their eyes closed and have three square meals on their tables.”

Like Wike, the Senate President insisted that Tinubu’s policies were designed to gradually give the country a clear economic footprint.

He argued that such could not be achieved overnight

“Nigerians should rest assured that we campaigned for these jobs and we will not let them down. All we need is patience. The rot that has happened in Nigeria for many years cannot be solved within months, “ Akpabio added.

The Senate President used the opportunity to appeal to Wike to look towards Ogoni land for someone that would match his achievements as Rivers State governor.

In a parliamentary style, he put a question to the gathering on where the next governor of the state would come from in 2027 to which those in attendance chorused Ogoniland.

Akpabio immediately announced that “the ayes have it,” and then turned to Wike, saying: “Barry Mpigi is thanking God for the future of Ogoniland.

“One of the hallmarks of leadership is loyalty. You cannot be a good leader unless you are a good follower. Wike followed all past leaders in Rivers.”

Still facing Wike, the Senate President made a veiled reference to former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, whom he said never contested an election but became a governor.

He said: “I know you (Wike) followed Dr. Peter Odili very well. There was a time my former good friend was in Ghana and you were running around here with lawyers.

“You were the first to have the pronouncement of the Supreme Court making someone a governor without the person going for an election.

“On getting there he turned around and asked: ‘Why will this man (Wike) be this powerful?’ He had to fight you.

“We were not surprised when in 2023 you said agreement is agreement. If you don’t want to adhere to an agreement on election day, come and win in Rivers State.”

Akpabio also thanked the minister for backing Tinubu, saying: “It is your support that had enabled the Southsouth to produce the first Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.”

The Senate President called for a minute of silence in honour of Access Holding Plc boss, Herbert Wigwe, his wife, Doreen Chizoba, his son Chizzy and others who died in a helicopter crash in the United States.

Akpabio to Eno: don’t listen to those fanning embers of division

Senate President Godswill Akpabio had a piece of advice for Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno – he should of not to listen to politicians fanning the embers of division between them.

Akpabio, who described political parties as mere vehicles for gaining powers for the development of the people, assured the government and people of Akwa Ibom State of the readiness of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration and the National Assembly to support its development plans.

The Senate President spoke at the Special Thanksgiving Service, organised by the Akwa Ibom State Government to thank God for the Supreme Court victory of the governor with the theme: “My heart rejoiceth in Tthe Lord,”  held at the All Nations Christian Ministry International, Eket, Akwa Ibom State.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Jackson Udom, quoted the President of the Senate as saying: “Elections are over, governance has started and that is why we are here to show our support for the government and the people of Akwa Ibom State.

“Let me assure you of the total support of President Bola Tinubu and the 10th Senate towards the development of Akwa Ibom State.

“The Federal Government is ready to partner with the state government in the provision of affordable housing and good road network.

“The president has discussed with us on the need to bring more industries to Akwa Ibom State. You are more advantaged than others because you speak the same language as the President.

“When they come, please release lands to them for development because it is the Akwa Ibom children that would be the ultimate beneficiaries of the projects.

“Forget about political parties because they are mere vehicles to gaining powers for the development of the people, Akpabio said.”

He advised the governor to be wary of politicians whose stock in trade is to place an imaginary wedge between political office holders for pecuniary benefits, saying, “those fanning the embers of division in the state between us are political jobbers.

“Don’t listen to them. Listen to all shades of opinion and be careful of those who come in to say things that will divide the state.”

Lauding Eno for returning to thank God over his victory at the Election Tribunal and at the Supreme Court, Akpabio said: “I thank you for coming back to where it all started, to thank God for the various victories you had from the Tribunal to the Supreme Court.

“I have accepted you as my Governor and I am ready to support you to succeed. We heard you are thanking God and we said we must join you. By thanking God, you are provoking Him to do more for you.

“It is not easy for a Senate President to work together with his state governor, even in the same party, not to talk of belonging to different parties like us. Our working together for the good of Akwa Ibom people is because we both fear God.”

The governor thanked Akpabio and his entourage which included his wife, Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Godswill Akpabio and seven senators, for joining him at the event.

He said: “Your presence today, speaks more than voice. We can fellowship, work and pray together because this is Akwa Abasi Ibom State.

“How lovely is it for brethren to dwell together in unity. It was necessary we came back here to say thank you. I am standing here today through the help of men and endorsement of God. I came in here as a Pastor, my prayer is that I leave here as a pastor.”

Eno also lauded President Tinubu and Akpabio for not interfering in the Supreme Court processes, but allowed the Justices of the apex court to dispense justice.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured residents of the Niger Delta region that the National Assembly will support President Bola Tinubu’s administration to complete the construction of the East-West Road and other Federal projects in the area.

Akpabio made the pledge when he hosted the Kasimene Bangha VII of Ogoni land and the Acting President of the Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers in Rivers State, His Royal Majesty, Mene (Dr.) Suanu Timothy Yormaadam Baridam Gbenemene, in his office in Abuja.

Akpabio also reassured the Ogoni people of the Senate’s determination, in collaboration with President Tinubu’s administration, to continue to work for the peace and development of the oil producing region.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, the Senate President said: “I want to congratulate you and your people on the peace in the Niger Delta region today. The region is very peaceful today because of the efforts and sacrifices of people like you.

“The Ogoni people have sacrificed a lot for the peace, progress and development of this country. May the souls of those who paid the supreme price for this to happen rest in peace.”

Commenting on Federal Government’s ongoing projects in the region, Akpabio said: “The President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration is totally committed to the completion of the East-West road during his tenure as the President. The 10th Senate and the National Assembly is ready to do everything within their powers to support the completion of the road.

“When I was the Minister of the Niger Delta Ministry, we did our best to move it up to almost 89 per cent completion. What was left was a major stretch from Eleme junction. The human factor also played a major part in the delay. We can’t do anything without security; that is why we will continue to appeal to our youths to cooperate with any company that comes there to add value.

“It isn’t the Federal Government that uses the road, it is our people. The condition of the road affects economic activities. That is why whatever must be done to put it in shape would be done.

“We are happy to receive you on behalf of other Ogoni traditional rulers. This Senate is indeed concerned about the East-West road. That is why we had to set up a committee headed by Senator Abdul Ningi to come down and study the East-West road and bring back a report for the Nigerian Senate to look at why the road has taken so long to be completed, despite the economic importance of the road to the country. That shows the seriousness the Senate attaches to that road.”

Dr. Gbenemene thanked Akpabio for his roles in the construction of the East-West road when he was the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.

He said: “Let me sincerely thank you for agreeing to see me at a very short notice. It also shows the respect you have for the institution and your Ogoni people.

“I specifically thank you for the works you have done on the East-West road. I remember very well that it was from that meeting we had severally with you that resulted in what the Minister of Work is doing today.

Akpabio tasks senators to collaborate with executive

Senate president, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday, January 30, urged his colleagues at the red chamber to continue to work and collaborate with the executive arm of the governor without compromising their independence.

Akpabio made this call in his address of welcome to senators from their break to celebrate the Christmas and New Year festivities.

He urged his colleagues to approach imminent challenges with the spirit of collaboration and patriotism.

Akpabio said: “In the coming months, we will face a multitude of challenges, from economic recovery and healthcare reform to national security and social justice.

“It is imperative that we approach these issues with a spirit of collaboration and a commitment to finding common ground.

“Let us rise above partisan divides and work together, transcending party lines, for the greater good of our nation.

“Our patriotism demands that we heed no other call except Nigeria’s call—the call echoed in our National Anthem.

“Let us continue to work and collaborate with the Executive Arm under His Excellency President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR, without compromising our independence as enshrined in our constitution.

“I urge every one of us to embrace the power of dialogue and the importance of compromise. Let us listen to one another with open hearts and open minds, guided by reason and evidence in our decision-making.

“Let us be champions for the marginalized and the voiceless, advocates of justice and equality.

“Our purpose should be twofold: to do as much good as we can to all the people we can, and to prevent any injustices from befalling anyone in our great nation, for injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

“As we embark on this new legislative session, let us be inspired by the limitless potential of what we can achieve together.

Akpabio not ‘habitual latecomer’ to plenary sessions, says spokesman

Senate president, Godswill Akpabio, is not a ‘habitual latecomer’ to plenary sessions neither does his lateness disrupt scheduled legislative activities, it was learnt on Sunday.

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, made this assertion in a statement in Abuja.

Eyiboh was reacting to a media report which accused Akpabio of “habitual lateness to every plenary sitting since he was elected to the position by his colleague senators last June.”

The report also alleged that “Akpabio’s tardiness” had been disrupting the legislative business of the Senate.

However, Eyiboh in his statement titled: “Akpabio believes in essence of time and value of his colleagues” described the allegation as false.

He said Akpabio’s philosophy of “time is money” and that “time is of essence” is exemplified in his sterling achievements in private and public life.

“Without good time management skills, he could not have attained these feats,” Eyiboh said.

He insisted that the Senate President has “absolute respect and regard for his distinguished colleagues and indeed all Nigerians.”

The statement reads: “For sometime, a false narrative has been woven round the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, CON, all in an attempt to give it a semblance of truth.

“Although, we had ignored the misinformation, it has become necessary to enlighten and educate the reading public so that these stories do not gain traction.

“First, as opposed to what has been bandied in the media that Akpabio is known for lateness to Plenary, being an intellectual politician and leader, he believes in Benjamin Franklin’s philosophy of ‘Time is money.’ To him, ‘Time is of the essence.’ And this is exemplified in his sterling achievements in private and public life. Without good time management skills, he could not have attained these feats.

“Secondly, Senator Akpabio as Senate President has absolute respect and regard for his distinguished colleagues and indeed all Nigerians.

“As the Senate President, he is not oblivious of the fact that he is just one among equals and has no cause whatsoever to undermine the elevated status of Distiguished Senators by always keeping them waiting in Plenary.

“However, we want the public to know that as Chairman of the National Assembly, Senator Akpabio and his colleagues are very experienced and conversant with the legislative dynamics and are aware of the enormous legislative and administrative responsibilities of the office of the President of the Senate.

“Disruptions or lateness to any schedule of the heads of arms of government, particularly the National Assembly are usually priotised not compromised.

“As the Presiding Officer, Akpabio meets with the Principal Officers before every Plenary and emergency issues do spring up, which deserve urgent attention.

“Again, at every other plenary, there are always motions of urgent public/national importance from distinguished senators.

“By the provisions of the Standing Orders and Rules of the Senate, Senators with such motions are required to meet with the Presiding Officer before Plenary.

“Some of these issues are so urgent and cannot be kept in view and the President of the Senate is expected to attend to them expeditiously before commencement of Plenary. These circumstances most times creep into the commencement time.

“The lateness of the President of the Senate to the plenary at any insignificant number of times has never affected the industry of the Senate or deliberately intended to deconstruct the core mandate of the Senate President’s parliamentary core mandate.

“Any insinuation suggesting that Senator Akpabio is ‘habitually late’ and it dates back to when he was Akwa Ibom State governor is but selling a rotten apple, which no discerning mind will buy.

“We can say without equivocation that Senator Godswill Akpabio’s penchant for beating the clock is never in doubt both in appointed and elected positions he has held.

“We, therefore, advise those spreading the gospel of Akpabio’s purported lateness to Plenary to apply brakes and allow the Uncommon Senate President concentrate on doing what he knows best – giving his all to the service of the nation and humanity.”
