Tinubu, Akume,  Osa-Oni, others pay final respect to  Bishop Adegbite’s late father

It was a season of joy, solemn reflection, and heartfelt thanksgiving as friends, family members, church leaders, and government officials from across Nigeria gathered in Fiditi, Oyo State, for the burial ceremony of Pa Moses Adediran Adegbite.

Pa Adegbite, who passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025, in his hometown of Fiditi, was laid to rest amid prayers, tributes, and gratitude for a life widely described as impactful and exemplary.

The burial service, held at Fiditi Grammar School, followed a well-attended wake-keep at his residence on Thursday, drawing national attention to the agrarian community.

The ceremony attracted an array of dignitaries from government, the church, and civil society. Among them were the Minister of Power, Senator Adebayo Adelabu, and the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, who led a federal delegation on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Also present were representatives of the Lagos State Government, including the Special Adviser on Christian Matters, Rev. Bukola Adeleke; the National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Bishop Francis Wale Oke; the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Prelate Oliver Ali Aba; the Presiding Archbishop of Vineyard Christian Ministry, Archbishop John Osa-Oni; the Iya Aladura General Worldwide, Dr. Oluwaseye Yomi-Sholoye; the Presiding Bishop of World Evangelism Bible Church, Bishop Samson Ayorinde; and former Inspector-General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, among others.

Traditional rulers, senior clergy across denominations, and community leaders also attended in large numbers, reflecting the deep respect Pa Adegbite commanded across religious, social, and institutional lines.

Notable among the children of the late patriarch is Bishop (Prof.) Stephen Tunde Victor Adegbite, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, and Chaplain to the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock.

Pa Adegbite’s life was described as historic within the Methodist Church in Nigeria, having raised two bishops, with a third reportedly in the making, a rare legacy that resonated throughout the service.

Born into modest circumstances, Pa Adegbite began his working life as a pupil teacher before joining the Oyo State Fire Service, where he served with dedication. After retirement, he ventured into private practice and remained actively engaged in community development.

He was widely regarded as a disciplinarian, philanthropist, community builder, and a man of deep Christian faith.

Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Senator Adelabu conveyed the President’s condolences to the Adegbite family and the people of Fiditi, describing the late patriarch as a man who “came, saw, and conquered.”

He said Pa Adegbite’s life was a reminder that every individual has a divine purpose, adding that his legacy was worthy of emulation by his family, community, and the nation.

Condolence messages were received from across the country, including letters from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; and several federal ministers and top government officials. All described Pa Adegbite as a man of faith, integrity, and service.

In his homily, Prelate Oliver Ali Aba reminded the congregation of the fleeting nature of life, urging believers to live with purpose and spiritual preparedness. He noted that material possessions and titles do not define the true value of life, stressing the need for faith, service, and readiness for eternity.

Describing Pa Adegbite as a man who lived intentionally, the Prelate said his legacy would endure through the values he instilled in his family and community. He called on Nigerians to embrace unity, prayer, and collective responsibility in building the nation.

Archbishop John Osa-Oni, in his remarks, described the large turnout of ministers of God as a fitting tribute to a life of impact. He urged church leaders and professionals to remember their roots and give back meaningfully to their communities, while encouraging the Adegbite family to remain united.

Speaking to journalists, Bishop Stephen Adegbite described his father as a man of resilience, discipline, and contentment. He recalled how Pa Adegbite rode a motorcycle for decades between Fiditi and Ibadan, teaching his children enduring lessons about simplicity and gratitude.

He added that the late patriarch was deeply loved for his generosity, peaceful disposition, and devotion to Christ.

In his honour, the family has embarked on several legacy projects, including the construction of an adult school, a headmistress’ office, and the Bishop’s Court for the Third Methodist Church Circuit, which has been completed and handed over.

The burial ceremony concluded with prayers and thanksgiving, celebrating a life that many described as fulfilled, impactful, and worthy of remembrance.

“The court will be known as the Moses Adegbite Memorial Methodist Court, Fiditi” he announced, pledging continued support for the diocese, archdiocese, and conference, “as the Lord lives.”

Also speaking, Bishop Bamidele Ibikunle, a childhood friend of Bishop Adegbite, described Pa Adegbite as a jovial, hardworking man who loved children beyond his biological family. “He taught us diligence and often reminded us that whatever a man sows, he will surely reap,” he said.

A granddaughter, Omowonuola Adedoyin, gave an emotional tribute, recalling her grandfather as a loving companion who cherished his grandchildren deeply. “He served us with love and kindness,” she said. “He even kept my childhood photograph in his room and constantly reminded us to be kind-hearted.”

    • Quality education will end insecurity — Ex-Osun governor

Nigerians from all walks of life yesterday paid glowing tributes to former Osun State Governor and elder statesman, Chief Bisi Akande.

Chief Akande, who clocked 87 on Friday, received birthday greetings from prominent Nigerians, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola; a former member of the House of Representatives who represented Ife Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Rotimi Makinde, among others.

President Tinubu and Akume described Akande as a pillar of Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

They spoke at the 87th birthday celebration of Chief Akande held in Ila-Orangun, Osun State, where they praised his lifelong commitment to democratic ideals, principled leadership and selfless service to the nation, noting that his contributions to Nigeria’s political development remain enduring and invaluable.

Tinubu’s goodwill message was delivered by Senator Akume at the ceremony.

In the message, the President described Akande as a mentor whose wisdom and counsel have guided generations of political leaders through difficult moments in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Secretary of the Government of the Federation (SGF) on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, he said the nation owes the elder statesman a debt of gratitude for his sacrifices and steadfast belief in democratic governance, praying for continued good health, strength and peace for him.

President Tinubu also expressed confidence that Akande’s legacy of integrity and patriotism would continue to illuminate Nigeria’s path towards unity, stability and progress.

In his personal goodwill message, Akume described Chief Akande as an embodiment of courage, humility and unwavering commitment to democratic values, noting that his service to the nation has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political history.

Recalling their political collaboration, Akume said they jointly launched a deliberate strategy aimed at dismantling the dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West.

He explained that the effort was driven by a shared belief in progressive governance, discipline and grassroots mobilisation.

According to him, the strategy reshaped the region’s political landscape and laid the foundation for the emergence of a formidable opposition that later evolved into the All Progressives Congress.

Akume also commended Akande’s tenure as Governor of Osun State and his role as the interim National Chairman of the APC, noting that his leadership helped shape Nigeria’s political landscape and strengthened democratic governance.

He added that Akande’s vision, integrity and wisdom continue to inspire leaders across generations, stressing that Nigeria’s democratic journey would be incomplete without recognising his immense contributions to national development.

    Sanwo-Olu celebrates Akande

The Lagos State and the Chairman of the South-West Governors Forum, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, congratulated Akande.

He described the former Osun State Governor as an advocate of good governance, an epitome of true federalism, a true democrat and a respected political icon who has impacted many lives positively in Nigeria through politics and governance.

According to a statement signed by the Lagos governor’s Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Gboyega  Akosile, Akande, popularly known as ‘Baba Omo kekeke’, is a role model to many people for his courage and dedication to the public interest.

The governor also commended Chief Akande for his commitment to public service, especially during his tenure as the first Governor of Osun State in the current Fourth Republic, adding that he remains a beacon of hope for younger generations in a country where many believe that politics is a means for personal acquisition.

The Governor further praised Chief Akande for the significant role he played in the formation of the ruling All Progressives Congress as the first interim National Chairman of the party. He also commended him for the elderly role he has been playing to sustain APC in Osun State, the South-West and Nigeria at large.

He said: “On behalf of my family, the government and the people of Lagos State, as well as the leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress, I congratulate our father, Chief Bisi Akande, on his 87th birthday.

“Chief Bisi Akande is a true democrat and a respected political icon who has remained in the progressive camp and contributed immensely to political development and governance in Nigeria for over five decades. He is an advocate of good governance, restructuring and true federalism in Nigeria.”

Marine and Blue Economy Minister eulogises first Osun governor

Adegboyega Oyetola, the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, also congratulated Akande.

The Minister stated this in a press statement signed by Bolaji Akinola, his Special Adviser on Media, on Thursday.

In the statement, the Minister described Akande as a towering figure in Nigeria’s democratic evolution and a principled leader whose life of service, integrity, and courage has left an indelible mark on governance and party politics in the country.

“Chief Bisi Akande remains one of the finest examples of purposeful leadership and unwavering commitment to public service,” Dr Oyetola said.

“His contributions to the development of Osun State, his role in strengthening progressive politics in Nigeria, and his mentorship of generations of political leaders stand as enduring legacies worthy of celebration.”

He added that Akande’s wisdom and steadfast guidance have continued to shape the direction of progressive politics at both state and national levels.

“Even at 87, Baba remains a voice of reason, courage, and clarity in our political space. His counsel is invaluable, and his life continues to inspire those of us privileged to follow in his footsteps,” the Minister stated.

The Minister prayed for God’s continued grace upon Akande, wishing him good health, renewed strength, and many more years of purposeful living in service to humanity and the nation.

    Quality education will end insecurity

Meanwhile, Chief Akande has said that investing in quality education remains a lasting solution to insecurity in Nigeria.

This is just as he warned institutions that lowering cut-off marks in tertiary institutions would weaken academic standards and leave Nigerian students ill-prepared to compete with their counterparts globally.

Speaking on Friday in his hometown, Ila-Orangun, at an event to mark his 87th birthday, added that merit-based admission and rigorous assessment are essential for producing graduates who can thrive in an increasingly competitive world.

Akande, proffering solutions to challenges of insecurity, said the menace cannot be eradicated overnight or by cutting corners, but can be gradually eliminated through quality education.

Now, look at Boko Haram, banditry, kidnapping, let people study very deeply, and all of this insecurity will become a thing of the past.

”Although your generation cannot eradicate it, it can be eradicated gradually if you adopt deep education.”

He cautioned that lowering the cut-off marks of institutions will not improve educational standards in Nigeria, adding that the practice will make the country less competitive globally.

Akande said, “Good education will make you competitive with the global world if you offer 25% as a pass mark in the University, you can’t compete with China, which will expect you to score 80%, where they do absolute meritocracy.

“When you cut corners, pass 25%, admit 20%, you cannot compare with people like China, who, if you have never achieved, you can’t become a member of the Communist party, and only members of the Communist party can vote and be voted for, this is absolute merit.

“Here in Nigeria, it’s cut corners, Americans threatened the other time, went to Venezuela to pick the president, and take him away, that’s the power of knowledge, which we are trying to cheat by saying things called 25% 20%. You won’t have that knowledge, you won’t be able to compete with the advanced world, and you will be enslaved, your land will be taken over by the strangers.”

President Bola Tinubu described the event as a rare privilege to celebrate a life wholly dedicated to the service of the nation, marked by integrity, courage and devotion to democratic ideals.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, on Tuesday described the life and public service record of Hadiza Bala Usman as a shining example of discipline, dedication and purpose, urging her to remain steadfast in advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Akume spoke in Abuja while delivering a goodwill message at the Hadiza Bala Usman @50 Governance Colloquium, held at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton, where he joined other dignitaries to celebrate the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination and Head of the Central Results Delivery Coordination Unit (CRDCU).

According to the SGF, Bala Usman’s career in public service reflects uncommon discipline and commitment to national development, expressing optimism that her years ahead would be marked by even greater impact and service to Nigeria.

He said her journey so far stands as a model of what principled leadership and consistency can achieve within the public sector.

In a formal congratulatory message read at the event, Akume described her 50th birthday as a celebration of “a life dedicated to service, purpose and unwavering commitment to good governance and national development.”

He noted that Bala Usman’s public career has been defined by dedication, courage and patriotic zeal, qualities he said have consistently shaped her contributions across various responsibilities she has held.

“As Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination and Head of the Central Results Delivery Coordination Unit (CRDCU), you have continued to distinguish yourself through intellectual rigour, strategic foresight and an uncommon passion for translating policy intent into measurable outcomes,” the SGF stated.

He added that Bala Usman has remained innovative, focused and resolute in driving the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly through performance monitoring and policy coordination across ministries, departments and agencies.

The SGF further observed that her journey, marked by service, sacrifice and steadfastness, has inspired many Nigerians, especially women and youths, to believe in the power of competence, integrity and purposeful leadership.

He prayed that God grants her good health, renewed strength and wisdom, wishing her many more years of impactful service, greater accomplishments and continued fulfilment.

SGF Akume: Benue celebrates stability, peace

In Benue State, where leadership is measured as much by personal steadiness as by public service, news of the renewed stability in the life of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has been received with warmth and quiet celebration.

For many in the state, the development represents not spectacle, but reassurance.

Those close to the family and the community have long been aware that the SGF has lived separately from his former spouse for a long time now, a period marked by restraint, discretion, and an absence of public drama.

True to his long-standing character, Senator Akume neither sought public sympathy nor indulged in explanations. He continued to serve, focused and composed, allowing private matters to remain private.

It is against this backdrop that the people of Benue say they welcome the new chapter in his life—not as a political event, but as a human one.

Community leaders, elders, women’s groups, and youth organisations across the state describe a mood of calm happiness: a sense that a man who has carried immense national responsibility has also found personal peace.

“Our leaders are human beings,” said a senior traditional figure in the state. “When one of our own finds stability after a long period of quiet difficulty, we acknowledge it with goodwill.”

Residents emphasise that what resonates most is not the marriage itself, but the manner in which it unfolded: without provocation, without public conflict, and without disrespect to any party involved. In a political culture often marked by excess and noise, the restraint has drawn admiration.

Equally noted is the reception extended to his wife, who has been welcomed warmly by the people of Benue. Community gatherings and private interactions have reflected openness rather than scrutiny, with many describing her as poised, respectful, and deeply conscious of the responsibilities that come with being associated with a national officeholder.

Women leaders in the state have particularly highlighted the importance of dignity in transition—acknowledging that life evolves, families change, and peace is sometimes found after long periods of silence rather than public confrontation.

For Benue citizens, the story is not one of controversy, but of continuity.

Senator Akume’s long political journey—from governor to senator to one of the most senior technocratic positions in the federation—has been defined by patience, consensus-building, and an aversion to needless conflict. Many see this same temperament reflected in how his personal life has been handled.

As one youth leader in Makurdi put it, “We are happy because our leader looks settled. A settled man leads with clarity.”

In a time when public officials are often reduced to headlines, the people of Benue appear intent on a more grounded message: that leadership thrives when the person behind the office is at peace.

And for them, this moment represents exactly that—a quiet return to balance, welcomed with goodwill and grace.

Although private in tone, the ceremony drew guests from political and social circles. Also in attendance was the groom’s mother, Chief Mrs. Hanmo Dajor, a former wife of Senator Akume.

Akume harps on accountability, urges states to use allocations for grassroots development

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has underscored accountability in governance as a critical driver of national development, urging all tiers of government to act responsibly in the use of public resources.

Akume spoke on Saturday at a church thanksgiving service held at St. John the Baptist Cathedral, Gboko, Benue State, to mark his 72nd birthday anniversary.

In a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Segun Imohiosen, Akume said sustainable development in Nigeria requires strong synergy among the federal, state and local governments, stressing that national progress is a shared responsibility.

He specifically called on state and local governments to ensure prudent and transparent utilisation of the enhanced federal allocations they receive under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to him, accountability at the subnational levels is essential to translating increased revenues into tangible development outcomes that directly impact people at the grassroots.

Akume also expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity to serve Nigeria over the years, reflecting on his long journey through the civil service and partisan politics.

He said he had remained committed to empowering individuals and communities, despite what he described as limited resources available to him at different stages of his public life.

He further appealed to Nigerians to rally behind President Tinubu’s administration, particularly in its push for an infrastructure-driven economic transformation across the country.

The thanksgiving service also featured goodwill messages from church leaders.

Speaking on behalf of the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Gboko, William Amove Avenya, the Bishop of Katsina-Ala Diocese, Isaac Dugu, described the SGF’s 72nd birthday as a significant milestone with positive implications for both Benue State and Nigeria.

Bishop Dugu said the occasion marked “a turning point for good,” urging prominent sons and daughters of Benue occupying positions of authority to rise above political differences and work together for the overall development of the state.

He emphasised that unity among leaders, regardless of party affiliation, remains crucial to unlocking Benue’s full potential and ensuring lasting progress for its people.

SGF Akume welcomes Ooni’s ex-Queen Zaynab as new wife

The marriage between Zaynab Ngohemba and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, was confirmed on Friday through a Facebook post.

Though the couple got married last year, only a few people and family members close to the couple were aware of the union.

Ngohemba was the wife of the Ooni of Ife, Osun State, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi (Ojaja II).

A Facebook user and member of the Dajoh family, Abraham Double-d Dajoh, had on Friday posted the photos of the wedding via a celebratory social media post.

The Dajoh family described the union as “beautiful” and “uncommon,” as they formally welcomed her into their fold in Benue State.

In a statement that quickly went viral, the Dajoh family expressed their collective joy, signalling a significant chapter for the SGF’s household.

“We, the entire Dajoh Family, happily join our daddy, uncle and brother, His Excellency, The Secretary To The Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume Jugu Dajoh, in welcoming his new and uncommon wife, Queen Zaynab Ngohemba-George Akume Dajoh, into the Dajoh family,” the post read.

The family further extended their appreciation to the political associates and supporters of the SGF, urging them to remain steadfast in their loyalty to him as he embarks on this personal journey.

“We appreciate and thank the fans and supporters of Sen. Akume for always standing by him. We enjoin every one of you to continue to support his Excellency even in this beautiful union with Queen Zaynab,” the post further read.

Queen Zaynab, who was previously known as Olori Wuraola during her 17-month marriage to the Ooni of Ife (which ended in 2017), was ushered into her new home with deep cultural reverence.

The Dajoh family emphasised the importance of their ancestral roots in Mbakor and the wider Benue State.

“Welcome to Benue State, the Food Basket of the nation, welcome to Mbakor, the seat of leadership of the Tiv nation and welcome to the Dajoh family, the home of your darling husband. Welcome home, Queen Zaynab,” the statement concluded.

The announcement coincided with the festive period, as the family used the opportunity to wish Nigerians a happy holiday season.

“We wish you all a happy Christmas Celebration and a Prosperous New Year,” the post read.

Akume, a former Governor of Benue State and a politician, currently serves as a key figure in the President Bola Tinubu administration.

Akume’s spokesman, Yomi Odunuga, confirmed the marriage.

He, however, said contrary to reports that the wedding was held on December 24, the marriage is over a year old.

“I can confirm the marriage. However, contrary to the rumour that the marriage was concretised in Gboko on Christmas eve when the couple appeared together at an event to celebrate Christmas, it was actually a marriage that is over a year old,” Odunuga said.

Akume assures full digitisation as SGF Office goes live on 1-Gov Cloud ECMS

The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) has formally commenced the transition to a fully digitised records and administrative system, with assurances that the move will strengthen digital governance, efficiency and transparency across its operations.

Speaking at the flag-off of the 1-Government (1 Gov) Cloud Enterprise Content Management System (ECMS) in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, said the initiative underscored the Office’s commitment to modernising governance processes in line with the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSIP 2025).

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the OSGF, Segun Imohiosen, Akume described the ECMS as a critical tool for transforming how the OSGF manages official records, workflows and inter-ministerial communications.

He said the system would provide a secure and integrated platform that improves timeliness, accuracy and decision-making, noting that the Office’s role as the coordinating hub of government policies and programmes made digital efficiency imperative.

“With the ECMS, our processes will be faster, more reliable and better aligned with the demands of contemporary public administration,” he said, adding that the full implementation of digitisation would enhance accountability and transparency in government business.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, who officially flagged off the deployment, commended the SGF and his management team for embracing the enterprise content management platform.

She said the adoption of the ECMS marked a significant step in digitising work processes and strengthening service delivery across the federal civil service.

Walson-Jack noted that the OSGF’s responsibility for coordinating Federal Executive Council (FEC) business and maintaining constant engagement with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) meant that traditional paper-based processes were no longer adequate.

According to her, the speed and accuracy required for effective governance can only be achieved through digital systems.

She explained that the introduction of the ECMS would ensure that government records are secure, easy to track and readily accessible when needed, thereby supporting smoother workflows and better-informed decisions.

She added that deploying the system on the One Gov Cloud platform would transform how work is done, enable electronic approvals, automate routine processes and significantly improve overall performance in the federal civil service.

The launch of the 1-Gov Cloud ECMS is expected to accelerate Nigeria’s public service digital transformation agenda, positioning the OSGF as a model for efficient, transparent and technology-driven governance.
