Akume: Inter-faith trust key to national cohesion, development

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has warned that the erosion of trust between Nigeria’s major religious communities poses a grave threat to national unity, urging stronger collaboration among faith leaders to prevent conflicts and rebuild confidence.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday at the second triannual meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), Akume said Nigeria is in a delicate period marked by “heightened political rhetoric, internal security strains, and degraded mutual trust” that had recently “almost ebbed into religious conflict.”

He cited violent incidents in Benue, Kwara, Kebbi, Niger, and Zamfara States, noting that the public anxiety generated by such attacks must be addressed through collective action and a balanced national narrative.

According to him, both Christian and Muslim communities have suffered devastating consequences of insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes, and it is misleading to frame the crises as affecting only one side.

“The point is not to engage in a scorecard of pain,” he cautioned, “but to underscore that violence in Nigeria is not monolithic. Both major faith groups bleed when any Nigerian is killed.”

Akume stressed that an inter-faith approach to peacebuilding is now “not only ideal but necessary” to restore confidence and prevent opportunistic actors from exploiting religious sentiments.

The SGF expressed concern over Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the U.S. government, saying the development underscored the need for deeper internal engagements to correct global misperceptions.

He said while diplomatic efforts were yielding progress, more work must be done in the short and long term.

He praised NIREC’s 26-year partnership with successive governments, describing inter-religious councils as “vital bridges” capable of dispelling misconceptions, mediating conflict, and strengthening the social fabric.

He assured that the Tinubu administration would deepen support for the council, especially as ongoing reforms begin to improve the economy.

Outlining priority areas for collaboration, Akume pointed to inclusive policymaking, early-warning conflict systems, joint peacebuilding, and promotion of justice and the rule of law.

He emphasised the education of young Nigerians to resist hate propaganda and extremist narratives.

On sovereignty, he maintained that while international cooperation is welcome, “Nigerians must work out Nigerian solutions,” adding that the government remains fully committed to protecting every community irrespective of religious affiliation.

Akume disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has established a new US–Nigeria Joint Working Group on Security in which NIREC leaders are expected to play significant roles as part of broader non-kinetic peace strategies.

He urged NIREC members to use their closed-door session to speak frankly and “reject the voices of division” in favour of justice, compassion, and unity.

“Nigeria will be stronger, better, and enjoy lasting peace if we collectively shame the peddlers of hatred and disunity,” he said.

Akume unveils ECMS, says Nigeria has entered new era of digital governance

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, on Tuesday declared that Nigeria has entered “a new phase of digital governance” with the launch of the Enterprise Content Management System (ECMS) of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), describing the platform as a model for modernising public administration across the federal bureaucracy.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony in Abuja, the SGF said the initiative goes beyond the institutional achievements of the Shippers’ Council and represents the government’s determination to eliminate outdated manual procedures in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume said the ECMS demonstrates the type of structural reform required to strengthen accountability, transparency, and service delivery nationwide.

Senator Akume noted that the platform is not a public-facing service but an advanced digital tool designed to dismantle long-standing problems associated with paper-based administration, including missing files, opaque approvals, and procedural delays.

“With this platform, no document can be altered without a trace,” he said, adding that features such as audit trails, automated approvals, and a central digital repository align with global standards adopted by leading regulatory institutions.

He explained that the automated system will enhance documentation integrity, streamline workflow, and improve communication among departments within the Council.

These improvements, he said, would translate into faster and more professional regulatory services to maritime stakeholders.

The SGF stressed that the automation drive is especially critical at a time when Nigeria’s maritime sector faces pressure to meet international compliance requirements and respond more quickly to industry challenges.

Senator Akume commended the Executive Secretary of the NSC, Dr. Pius Akutah, for championing one of the first examples of compliance with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive on digital records management in public service.

He urged other MDAs to emulate the Council by adopting similar enterprise systems to build a smarter and future-ready federal bureaucracy.

He also linked the initiative to the Federal Government’s Ease of Doing Business agenda, saying efficient internal processes will translate to faster approvals and reduced transaction costs for businesses.

“Today’s occasion represents more than an institutional achievement; it is a bold statement of the Federal Government’s determination to modernise public administration through integrated digital governance,” Akume said.

    • …Akume receives Charismatic Bishops Conference delegation

The federal government has restated its unwavering commitment to tackling insecurity, urging regional and international partners to deepen collaboration in the ongoing fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, made the appeal on Thursday when he received a high-powered delegation of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), led by its President, Archbishop Prof. Leonard Bature Kawas, in his office in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the SGF, Segun Imohiosen, Akume said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains fully committed to securing the lives and property of Nigerians, noting that security institutions are being strengthened while partnerships are being expanded both within and outside the country.

“But the government is seriously committed to eradicating insecurity… We need support from our allies to be able to fight terrorists in the land,” the SGF said, calling for intensified international collaboration to contain emerging threats.

He welcomed the vote of confidence passed on the administration by the CBCN, describing it as further validation of the President’s efforts to stabilise the nation and address longstanding security challenges.

Senator Akume added that the Federal Government has continued to deepen engagements with traditional rulers, business leaders, the private sector, political actors, and religious bodies to build “a strong and virile Nigeria for all.”

He urged religious organisations to sustain prayers for peace, unity, and national prosperity.

Earlier, Archbishop Kawas reaffirmed the Conference’s commitment to supporting the Tinubu administration’s quest to restore security nationwide.

He said the bishops would continue to pray for peace and unity, while backing ongoing government efforts to protect citizens and strengthen social cohesion.

The SGF praised the delegation for its solidarity and assured them of the government’s determination to overcome insecurity and reposition Nigeria on the path of lasting stability.

…says Africa must not stand on the sidelines of global innovation

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has urged African governments and industry leaders to position themselves at the forefront of the technological revolution reshaping global energy systems.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Technical Operations, Prof. Babatunde Bolaji Benard, at the 9th Solewani Energy Summit themed “Emerging Technologies and the Future of Sustainable Development in Africa,” Akume said Africa cannot afford to lag behind as artificial intelligence, robotics, digital monitoring, and smart infrastructure transform the global energy landscape.

He emphasised that Africa’s rapidly growing population, fast-paced urbanisation, and increasing energy demands require bold innovation and swift adoption of advanced technologies.

Beyond using these tools, he said the continent must actively participate in developing and scaling them to secure long-term economic strength.

Highlighting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing reforms, Akume said Nigeria is demonstrating a strong commitment to a modern, technology-driven energy sector.

He cited key interventions such as the Presidential CNG Initiative, the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, the Energy Transition Plan, enhanced local content policies, and expanded involvement of Nigerian firms in refining, gas processing, pipeline development, and renewable energy.

“These actions reflect our determination to build a diversified, technologically advanced, and globally competitive energy economy,” he noted.

Describing technology as the engine of sustainable development, the SGF said emerging technologies are vital to fighting poverty, cutting energy costs, boosting efficiency, and creating jobs for Africa’s youthful population.

He added that advanced digital systems, renewable energy solutions, and automation will help reduce environmental impacts while strengthening long-term energy security.

Akume commended the Solewani Group for sustaining what he described as one of Africa’s most credible platforms for shaping energy policy and fostering industry collaboration.

He urged participants to engage fully and turn the summit’s resolutions into measurable actions that support national and continental development.

As Africa grapples with poverty and climate vulnerability, the SGF said platforms like the Solewani Summit are crucial for driving transformation in the energy sector.

“It is a defining moment; emerging technologies will determine whether Africa leapfrogs into a sustainable future or remains on the margins,” he stated.

Akume congratulated the Solewani Group on hosting the summit and restated the federal government’s commitment to partnerships that accelerate innovation and sustainable development across the continent.

We’re building a seamless government machinery – Akume

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, on Tuesday declared the Tinubu administration is driving a “whole-of-government” model that will dismantle bureaucratic silos and build a seamless governance machinery, ensuring every arm of government works cohesively to deliver the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking at the opening of the OSGF Sectoral Retreat in Abuja, Akume said the administration’s objective is simple: “to build a seamless government machinery where every component works cohesively to advance the President’s priorities.”

He stressed that the retreat, themed “Strengthening Coordination for Results: Aligning Mandates with Presidential and Service Priorities for Effective Policy Implementation” — is designed to realign government structures and processes to the President’s development ambitions.

Akume stated that President Tinubu has set a clear governance direction focused on economic revitalization, social inclusion, infrastructural expansion, and foundational reforms.

However, he noted that the success of this vision depends largely on efficient execution and strengthened institutional coordination.

“The success of any administration relies not only on the strength of its policies but also on how effectively those policies are executed. Weak coordination, overlapping efforts, and insufficient performance monitoring can undermine public trust,” the SGF said.

He said the OSGF will champion shared accountability across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and urged public officials to interrogate their mandates in line with national priorities.

“We must make a decisive shift from activity-based administration to results-based management,” he declared, emphasizing three core pillars: continuous performance tracking, transparent monitoring and evaluation, and institutional learning.

To support this, Akume announced that government has institutionalised a performance management system built around clearly defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), digital dashboards for tracking national targets, and integrated data platforms for evidence-based decision-making.

“Technology must be our indispensable ally,” he said, adding that e-government platforms and real-time monitoring tools would enhance transparency and efficiency in public service delivery.

The SGF charged participants to use the retreat to dismantle systemic obstacles to policy execution and strengthen inter-ministerial collaboration.

“Government efficiency is a shared national responsibility. Let us strive to make government work better, faster, and smarter for the Nigerian people,” he noted.

He expressed confidence that the deliberations would produce actionable steps to accelerate implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Akume urged civil servants to embrace a renewed culture of coordination, accountability, and innovation: “Together, we can strengthen coordination, enhance accountability, and reinforce our collective resolve to deliver for Nigerians.”

Akume: northcentral vital to Nigeria’s non-oil export growth

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has said the vast economic potential of the northcentral is vital to the country’s non-oil exports.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, quoted Akume as sàying the region’s rich mineral deposits and strong agricultural base give it a strategic advantage in driving national economic diversification.

The SGF noted that with sustained improvements in logistics and transport infrastructure, the Northcentral could play a leading role in boosting Nigeria’s non-oil export sector.

Akume spoke in Jos, the Plateau State capital, while inaugurating the Senator George Akume’s 250-seater conference centre at the northcentral zonal office of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC).

“With improved logistics infrastructure, this region can become a key driver of Nigeria’s diversification agenda,” he said.

Speaking as the special guest of honour, Senator Akume hailed the Nigerian Shippers’ Council and the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy for what he called “a testament to commitment and vision” in strengthening Nigeria’s logistics and maritime system.

“This edifice is not just a building; it is a statement of vision, a testament to commitment, and a reflection of the renewed energy driving Nigeria’s port and logistics system under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Akume said.

The SGF said across the world, economic progress is built on solid infrastructure, adding that efficient ports, roads, railways, and dry ports are “the arteries through which the lifeblood of commerce flows”.

Akume reiterated that the Federal Government, under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was prioritising investment in critical transport and trade infrastructure across all regions of the country — from the coastlines to the hinterlands — to boost connectivity and competitiveness.

“We are building an economy that thrives on connectivity.

“An economy where a farmer in Benue can ship produce seamlessly to Lagos Port, and an exporter in Jos can access global markets without unnecessary bottlenecks,” he added.

North-Central holds key to Nigeria’s non-oil export growth — Akume

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has underscored the North Central region’s strategic role in Nigeria’s economic diversification drive, describing it as a future hub for the country’s non-oil exports.

Speaking on Tuesday in Jos, Plateau State, while commissioning the Senator George Akume 250-seater Conference Centre at the North Central Zonal Office of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), the SGF said the region’s abundant mineral resources and strong agricultural base position it as a key engine for growth outside oil.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume noted that sustained investments in transport and logistics would unlock the zone’s full potential, adding “with improved logistics infrastructure, this region can become a key driver of Nigeria’s diversification agenda”.

The SGF commended the NSC and the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy for their vision in strengthening the country’s logistics and maritime systems, describing the new edifice as “a statement of vision, a testament to commitment, and a reflection of the renewed energy driving Nigeria’s port and logistics system under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Akume emphasised that economic progress across the world rests on robust infrastructure, noting that efficient ports, roads, railways, and dry ports form “the arteries through which the lifeblood of commerce flows.”

He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment, under the Renewed Hope Agenda, to investing in critical trade and transport infrastructure across the nation—from the coastlines to the hinterlands—to enhance connectivity and competitiveness.

“We are building an economy that thrives on connectivity. An economy where a farmer in Benue can ship produce seamlessly to Lagos Port, and an exporter in Jos can access global markets without unnecessary bottlenecks”, he said.

Applauding the NSC Executive Secretary, Barrister Pius Akuta, Akume lauded the Council’s role as the Port Economic Regulator and its efforts in bridging the gap between seaports and inland regions through the establishment of Inland Dry Ports and zonal coordination offices.

He explained that the newly inaugurated conference centre would serve as a hub for stakeholder engagement, policy dialogue, and capacity building in the maritime and logistics ecosystem.

Calling for deeper collaboration among government, the private sector, and development partners, Akume urged Nigerians to view infrastructure not merely as government projects but as “national assets that require protection, maintenance, and innovation.”

“Government cannot achieve this vision alone. We must all play our part in sustaining the gains of infrastructure development and ensuring that they translate into prosperity for our people,” he stressed.

Akume hails Throne Room Ministry’s role in nation-building

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has commended the Throne Room Trust Ministry, Kafanchan, for sustained role in promoting peace, national unity, and spiritual revival through prayers and intercession for Nigeria.

Speaking at the close of the Ministry’s 21st International Prophetic Prayer Conference, Akume, represented by the wife of his Chief of Staff, Pastor Mrs. Mary Chris Taka, said the Federal Government appreciates the Throne Room’s unwavering commitment to moral reawakening and nation-building.

He described faith-based organisations as vital partners in the national development process, stressing that their spiritual efforts contribute immensely to social harmony and moral transformation in a time when the nation needs healing and divine direction.

The five-day global event, with the theme “The Day of the Spirit,” drew thousands of pilgrims, ministers, and intercessors from across Nigeria, other African nations, and parts of Europe and America. It featured sessions of intense worship, prophetic declarations, and intercessory prayers for nations, leaders, and the global Church.

Leading the congregation in fervent prayers, the Vision Pioneer of the Throne Room Trust Ministry, Apostle Dr. Emmanuel Nuhu Kure, prophesied a coming wave of divine intervention that would shake systems and expose works of darkness across Africa.

He, however, assured that those who put their trust in God would be preserved amid the turbulence, urging the Church to remain alert and spiritually sensitive in this “day of the Spirit.” According to him, revival and reformation are God’s next divine agenda for the continent.

Special intercessory sessions were dedicated to praying for kings, traditional rulers, and the land of Southern Kaduna, with supplications for divine protection, wisdom, and peace in the region. Participants sought God’s hand to bring lasting harmony, prosperity, and spiritual renewal to the area.

Delegates described the conference as a soul-lifting experience and a divine platform for the realignment of nations with God’s prophetic purpose. Many testified to a deeper sense of revival and renewed spiritual fervour.

As the curtains fell on the 21st edition, Apostle Kure charged believers to carry the fire of the Spirit into their communities and nations, declaring: “This is not just the day of the Spirit—it is the beginning of a new move of God across the earth.”

Akume condoles with Moro over death of son, grandson

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has commiserated with Senator Patrick Abba Moro and his family over the loss of their son and grandson in quick succession.

In a condolence message yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Terrence Kuanum, the SGF said he received the news of the death of Victor Moro, who reportedly died yesterday in a motor accident, with profound shock and sadness.

“The news of the passing away of your beloved son, Victor Moro, has left me totally broken. Only a few hours ago, your family was hit by the sudden demise of your grandson, and moments later, you were forced into another round of mourning,” Akume said.

He described the tragedy as “heart-wrenching, sad, and devastating,” noting that the late Victor’s “loving presence will be greatly missed, while his fond memories will forever be cherished by all who crossed paths with him”.

Akume said the painful deaths had created a void not only in the Moro family but also in the entire Okpokwu Local Government Area, the Idoma nation, and Benue State.

Praying for the repose of Victor’s soul, Akume urged Moro and his family to find solace in the fact that the deceased “lived a purposeful life” and to remain strong in faith amid the grief.

“May God grant the late Victor eternal rest and comfort the family and friends he left behind,” the SGF said.
