Abraham rejects Ondo APC primaries, heads for appeal committee

A Governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Segun Abraham has rejected the outcome of the last Saturday’s governorship primary election of the party.

Abraham who came second in the election with a total votes of 635 had earlier congratulated the winner, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), but later said his decision was hinged on alleged irregularities that marred the poll conducted by a committee headed by the Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Abubarka.

The Ikare-Akoko born politician has appealed against the outcome of the election through a petition forwarded to the tribunal set up by the APC national secretariat.

According to a statement titled “that our democracy may endure” signed by the Director-General of his campaign organization, Prince Olu Adegboro, Abraham noted that the outcome of the election was unacceptable to him, because of ‘anomalies’ that characterised the exercise.

The statement read further “It is no longer news that as a true democrat, imbued with the best spirit of sportmanship, I congratulated Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, who purportedly emerged as the candidate of the APC in the September 3, Gubernatorial Primary election in Ondo State in the face of palpable disbelief and surprise on the outcome of the Primary election by my numerous supporters.

“The news however is that, sordid and staggering facts have since emerged on how the process leading to the primary election was manipulated and compromised. It is now beyond doubt that the delegate list used on the day of the primary election was doctored and strangely injected with a mind bogging number of delegates who are neither executive members of our party nor statutory delegates.

“To say the least, the manipulation of the delegate list, highly skewed accreditation process and the entire processes leading to the conduct of the primary election has cast the darkest stain on the result of the primary election held on the 3rd September, 2016.

“Against this background, coupled with the change and integrity that our party preaches and practices, and having widely consulted with my numerous supporters, I have reached the hour of decision to fall back on the internal mechanism of our great party to seek redress so that the end of justice will be served and more importantly, our democracy may endure.

“To this end, the outcome of the September 3, APC Governorship primaries in Ondo State is unacceptable and I hereby appeal against same.

“The allegations that have sadly pelted the supposedly free and fair Saturday exercise, where 24 aspirants battled to nick the party’s ticket, include but not limited to, delegates list tampering, fake delegates incursion, disenfranchising of rightful delegates, smuggling of illegal ballot papers into ballot boxes.”

Abraham said the official petition would soon be forwarded to the Electoral Appeal Committee to back up the appeal.

  • Kekemeke remains Ondo APC Chair, says NEC

Kekemeke remains Ondo APC Chair, says NEC

The National Secretariat of the  of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday passed a vote of confidence on the embattled Chairman of the party in Ondo state,Isaac Kekemeke and its executives.

It debunked the report on the removal of Kekemeke, saying he is still in control of the party in Ondo state and will remain so until the national secretariat decides otherwise.

In a communique issued at the end of the meeting of the State Executive Committee (SEC) of the party, with the National Executive Committee(NEC)officials from Abuja, it resolved to remain focused and determined to wrest power from the present government in the state.

According to the communique “the National Secretariat of the party led  by the National Deputy Chairman (North) and the National Deputy Chairman (South) have made it abundantly clear yesterday in a meeting held with the State Working Committee that the State Party Chairman, Kekemeke remains the Party’s Chairman in Ondo State, while grievance(s) from any dissent voice can only be treated as at first instance by the Party’s zonal committee in line with Article 21 (B) (vi) (d) of the party’s constitution.”

The communique released by the party’s Director of Media and Publicity, Mr Steve Otaloro reads further “we remain resolute with the leadership of Hon. Kekemeke as the De-facto and De-jure Chairman of our Great Party in Ondo State.

“We retain confidence in the leadership of Chief Pius Akinyelure, the Party’s National Vice Chairman (South West) of our great Party.

“We further affirm our confidence in the leadership of the National leader of our Great Party, in person of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We therefore assure the general public, our party members home and abroad and all the party’s gubernatorial aspirants in the forthcoming primary election in Ondo State that the exercise is going to be free, fair and transparent to protect the integrity of our party in Ondo State.

“We also we re-assure the general public who have made up their mind to send away the PDP-led government from its reign of deceit in Ondo State through their votes come November 2016, that there will be no imposition.”

  • FUTA plans safe solar eclipse viewing in Akure

The Federal University of Technology, Akure(FUTA), under the University Centre for Space Research and Applications, is organising a safe viewing of the September 1 solar eclipse in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

It will be carried out in conjunction with the Nigeria Chapter of Universe Awareness and Astronomers without Borders (UAAB).

An annular eclipse occurs when the sun and moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the moon is smaller than that of the sun. Hence, the sun appears as a very bright ring or annulus surrounding the dark disk of the moon.

The highest degree of obscurity in Nigeria during the annular eclipse would be in the Southern part.

The eclipse is expected to occur in Akure between 7:15am to 9:55am local time [UTC+1.0] max 65 per cent at 8:28am.

Solar eyeglasses will be provided for school students and other enthusiasts to ensure safety during the period, which is set to begin around 7am on Sunday, September 1, at the hilltop in FUTA.

A statement by the Head, Media and Corporate Communications of National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Felix Ale, warned that the eclipse is not a spiritual issue, but a natural occurrence that can be accurately predicted by science.

Besides, the statement cautioned that that nobody should observe eclipse with naked eyes since it can lead to permanent damage to the eyes.

The space agency appealed to the public not to panic or attach any mystical interpretation to the  event.

The last time Nigeria experienced an eclipse was in 2013.

  • Group makes case for Owo/Ose constituency

A group, Owo/Ose Egaliterian Group (OEG) has said that it is its turn to
produce the next governor of Ondo state under the plaform of any political
    party.

It emphasised that it was illogical for Akoko Division in the same Ondo
North to have the governorship and senatorial seats simultaneously.

A statement by its Coordinator, Akin Famadenuyi said the group was concerned about the capability of whoever should aspire to lead Ondo state now in the face of the dwindly revenue and zero industrial base.

It said the present prevailing situation demands for intergrity of a visionary leadership with unflinching loyality to the cause of the progressives party.

OEG recalled that it was a concensus in the state that the office of the governor should be rotated round the three senatorial Districts begining with late Chief Adebayo Adefarati (North) Dr Olusegun Agagu (South) and the
    incumbent Olusegun Mimiko (Central).

The statement reads: “It is most reasonable to continue in that direction
unless the North which is next in turn find it difficult to produce an acceptable candidate.

“Akoko has been the most beneficiary of political offices holding either elective or on appointments since the advent of the present democratic dispensation, they have produced Governor, two deputies, speaker, House of Assembly, Chief of Staff (CoS) to the President, Ministers and others including the incument Senator, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice.

“The concensus is that when the governor comes from Akoko, the Senator
should come from Owo/Ose axis and vice versa, but now Akoko has an array of
aspirants in the race which is morally wrong.”

OEG urged the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) and other political parties to zone the governorship
slot to Owo/Ose Federal Constituency particularly Ose local government in
the interest of justice and fairplay.

  • Group pleads for transparent primaries in Ondo

A group, Asiwaju Change Movement (ACM) worldwide has urged the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to listen to the yearnings of the party supporters and many people in Ondo State for transparent and credible primaries on August 27.

The group in a statement in Akure, the state capital through its founder and national coordinator, Simisola Jegede-Ayoade said the mistake of the 2012 election should not repeat itself in the state.

It pleaded with the national leaders of the party to give all the aspirants a level-playing ground to facilitate the emergence of the best and most popular among them to guarantee victory for the opposition party.

The National Coordinator, reminded the party about the outcome of the 2012 gubernatorial election  in the state when a particular aspirant was favoured at the expense of others.

According to the statement”We are tired of losing elections in this state as a political party. Ondo State is a sensitive state with her own peculiarities. It is more or less a Republican State that prefers choosing its representatives without external or undue influence.

”Any element of zoning, imposition, endorsement, and adoption would only qualify the party for an automatic and irrecoverable defeat in November 26“.

ACM is a socio- political group established over a year ago to promote and propagate the political ideology of former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu with membership in 23 States in Nigeria and eight overseas countries.

The group maintained that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should not be allowed to continue its retrogressive governance in the state, stressing that the only way to bring desired changes to the state was for the APC to win the November governorship polls.

  • ‘Why Akure should produce next Ondo governor’

‘Why Akure should produce next Ondo governor’

Former Ondo State House of Assembly member Prince Ademola Adegoroye, in this interview with reporters in Lagos, explains why he is eyeing the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and why Akure should produce the next governor. Excerpts:

Why do you want to govern Ondo State?

I am sure you are aware that this is not my first time of running for the office of governor in Ondo State. I have done so twice.  I contested for the first time in 2003 and the second was in 2007 when I became the governorship candidate of the Action Congress in the state. I have always known that I was born to lead; born to put smiles on the faces of my people.  And since leadership is a responsibility, all my life, I have never had any doubt on my mind about my capacity to lead. So, I set out since then to know what politics is and to practice it the way it should be done in order to make life better for the common man.

I have been a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly and contested on two occasions- first in 1997 and second in 1999. I started this governorship ambition of mine in 2003, though people thought that I was too young for the position. But because I have a vision, that I was born to do this and I have this burning desire in me to make a difference and leave my footprint on the sands of time. So my vision has never changed, my focus has never changed. I want to be governor of my state because I know I have the capacity to make a difference.

What are the changes he intends to effect in governance?

My stance in politics is to always be circumspect about analysing other people. Dr. Olusegun Mimiko came into office in 2009, and I suppose he has done his own best. But to the best of my mind, Dr, Mimiko, no matter how well-intentioned he is, could not do it all. It could be his style or anything, but today; my people in the state want a change in the style of governance. There are so many areas where Mimiko has done well. First is in the area of health where he put up one of the best trauma centres in the country in Ondo town. I did not want to go there but sometime ago, I had a good reason to go there. I have been to many hospitals in Nigeria and abroad, but I can sincerely attest to the fact that it is a world class hospital. But I still believe that we should have such hospital in every senatorial district in the state. Today, if people have to come from Ikare Akoko to Ondo for treatment, that is not good enough. We need standard hospitals, world class, at least, three of such in Ondo State. Akure as we speak, does not have a standard hospital. I intend to address this by bringing such to the people and ensure they are well-managed, well run hospital in each zone. Right now, the General hospital in Akure is nowhere. If you go there, you will be amazed. A lot of attention has been given to Ondo, which should not be so.

In the state, civil servants are owed upwards of five months salaries. What do you intend to do in the area of welfare?

By the grace of God, I will ensure that the welfare of my people is given priority attention. Right now, I think the state government is owing about six to seven months’ salaries. And you know what that means, particularly in a civil service state. Government is the major spender, the biggest spender because when the civil servants get paid, everybody benefits from it. I am not a civil servant but I feel it, because my wife is one. Naturally, she contributes to the running of the house. There are sometimes when I am not at home, she buys diesel and a couple of things, but now she cannot do that because she has not been paid.  Other parents suffer in similar manners because they cannot pay their children’s school fees, cannot pay for other services. So it permeates the whole system and that has crumbled the whole economy in Ondo State. That should not be so.

I am sure that if Dr. Mimiko has prioritised his spending, alongside federal allocation and internally generated revenue, Ondo State would not have been like this. Take for instance, Ondo State is the only oil producing state in the whole of the South-West. So, we earn higher federal allocation than states like Ogun, Osun, Oyo and Ekiti states. So, we should not be in the class of states that cannot pay salaries for upwards of six months. So, we are going to look into that. Already, I have set up a team to look at the issue of IGR and they are already working. We know that the decline in the price of all has led to reduction in the revenue that accrues to Ondo State, so we are looking at how to soar up our IGR so as to be able to do well in that area like Lagos State, which is doing marvelously well. Many people have property in Ondo State, for instance, and nobody is asking them about tenement rates. This will be addressed. I also know that if the current developments in the international oil market are anything to go by, oil price will go up. We have no reason not to pay civil servants in Ondo State and by the grace of God, I will ensure that these civil servants get paid as at when due. I am a welfarist and by the 30th of every month, if my driver and security men are not paid, I get worried. Hence, I will be more worried if civil servants are not paid.

How strong and united is the Ondo APC?

Dr. Mimiko was in the Labour Party and he joined the Peoples Democratic Party later.  I have no doubt in my mind that APC has the structure, a dynamic chairman, leadership and scores of other people are defecting to the party.  I am also aware that even people who were no members before are joining. But one fact that cannot be ruled out is that having lots of party members does not translate the party into an election-winning party. We need to make APC an election-winning platform in the state. Let me give you an example, we had a popular candidate in person of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and I thank our party leaders like Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who did the magic for us. But you would recall that just a week after that election, during the House of Assembly election, there was a drastic turn-around such that our party lost woefully.

    What was the cause?

I think it had to do with the quality of candidates.  I am not saying that most of those candidates were not quality people, because APC will not field candidates of low quality.  But they were not politically experienced, not politically exposed. They did not know much about mobilisation and strategising. Now, we were aware that a lot of money was rolled into it, but Ondo people are very progressive people, people whom money cannot buy. Now, I know there is high level of poverty in the land, but I know that people of Ondo and Ekiti are principled people. When they make up their mind, they stand by it. What I am saying is that at this stage, APC needs a politician as candidate, a politician who knows his onions; whose name is already a household name in the state- it does not matter where he comes from.  We need somebody who has seen the good and the bad sides of politics; a man who knows how to mibilise people; a man who has contested elections over and over again whether he has won or lost, and I tell you that is where I come in. And for these reasons, some leaders and members of the party in the state, even some civil servants have urged me to join the race. And of course, more importantly, I happen to come from an area which has the preponderance of the voting population in the state, which of course, will translate to victory. I am not going to tell you that Ademola Adegoroye is popular, but how many politicians are more popular than me in the state?

    Which area is that?

I come from Ondo Central- Akure in particular- a place that has never produced a governor in the history of the state.  But mark you, I am not predicating my ambition on the Akure Agenda. Of course, I believe in the Akure Agenda, I believe there must be justice and equity. I believe that Akure is the only division in the state that has not produced the governor. Ondo has done, just like Ikale has. Owo and Akoko have done. So Akure North, Akure South or Ifedore should produce the next governor. That is now left for us. If we want it, we must fight for it. However, I am only saying that is an additional advantage that I have. Besides, my political experience,  I know how many politician in Ondo State, who has the kind of experience I have in politics – I am sorry if I sound immodest, but I know how to strategise for election, how to mobilise people, how to make people to work for that election. By the grace of God, with me taking the ticket of APC, the party can go to bed rest assured of victory.

  • Ondo: APC aspirant warns electorate on Mimiko political antics

Ondo: APC aspirant warns electorate on Mimiko political antics

An All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Ondo State, Mr. Niyi Adegbonmire SAN on Thursday warned the people of the state not to fall for the political antics of the state governor Olusegun Mimiko ahead of the November 26, gubernatorial poll.
Adegbonmire alleged that the governor had embarked on campaign of calumny by blaming the current hardship in the state on President Muhammdu Buhari, whereas Mimiko mismanagement’s attitude had been the bane for this.
The aspirant spoke with reporters, at his party secretariat in Akure, the state capital, shortly after submitting his letter of intent and also paid his N2million developmental levy ahead of the party primary.
The lawyer faulted Mimiko on his recent programme tagged “Eto Igbe Ayo” where bags of rice and beans are distributed to the people in Ikare Akoko in Akoko North East local government on the ground of reducing hunger in the state.
He noted that despite that it is not a bad idea for people who are more blessed by God to assist the less privileged, he believes the plot by Mimiko to be distributing rice for the people at this critical political stage was to lure the electorate to vote for his party.
Adegbonmire, who was the son of the former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), late Wumi Adegbonmire further said: “the people should have asked the governor where he got that money from to buy the rice and beans at a time he is battling to pay his workers five months salaries, workers at the two tertiary institutions are on strike, and no infrastructural projects are going on?”
The aspirants urged the people to learn from their neigbouring state where the political antics of their governor is to be distributing food stuffs, claiming there was no money to pay the workers but later discovered that he was allegedly keeping some huge amount of money in his accounts.
On his ambition, Adegbonmire said he was in the race to give to the State the best needed change that the people of Ondo State had been yearning for in terms of good governance.
He commended the Party leaders across the 18 local governments for their tolerance and continued efforts at building a virile Party in the State in spite of economics hardship imposed upon the people by the present administration of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko led government.
He urged the leaders to provide a level playing ground for all the contestants through which a popular candidate could emerge.
He said his administration, if given the mandate would focus on good governance by putting in place a mechanism, in line with the Party manifesto and constitution to give succours to the people at grassroots and also ensuring equal allocation and distribution of wealth

Ondo: Police arrest timber seller over alleged assault

The Ondo State Police Command Friday arrested a popular Akure timber Seller, Adeleye Fayehun (aka Ade-basket) for allegedly assaulting a pregnant woman.

The victim, Mrs. Adenike Adeolu,44 years was alleged to have been brutalized following disagreement over timber business.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO),Femi Joseph who confirmed the arrest said the suspect, Fayehun, has been detained and placed under custody for interrogation.

Joseph added that the confessional statement of the suspect had been taken by the police.

He said “The case has been reported and we have already begun investigation into the matter”

It was learnt that the husband of the victim, Olusanya Adeolu, accompanied by sympathizers reported the case to the police at the Akure Area Command shortly after the incident.

Adeolu said the suspect’ Ade-basket’ joined by some hoodlums believed to be his boys battered her wife to a state of comma

He also condemned the maltreatment and assault done on his wife by some of the whiskers who are currently cooling their heels in police net.

Adeolu alleged that the culprit had been terrorising residents of Akure and had been threatening to deal with his wife over timber business which according to him he wanted to monopolized.

He said”the issue got to this level when the suspect (Fayehun) collected a sum of N800,000 from some forest agents which was illegal.

“It was this collection that warranted the timber’s union meeting summoned at an hotel along Ondo road and my wife decided to join them during the session being a member of the union.

Speaking on her sick bed, the Mrs. Adeolu narrated how Fayehun stood up during the meeting after raising issues concerning the collection and slapped her.

According to her,two other men who are his accomplices also joined him to maltreat her to a point that she became unconscious.

Symphatisers condemned the act, stressing that the development could ignite public uproar.

They accused Fayehun and his cohorts of usually causing public disturbances in Akure with impunity, stressing that it is time to be tamed by security agencies since nobody is above the law of the land.

  • Mimiko’s foreign trip: PDP critises APC

Mimiko’s foreign trip: PDP critises APC

The Ondo state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state over its comments on the recent working visit to the United Kingdom (UK) in spite of the ongoing industrial action by workers in the state.

A statement by its Director of Media and Publicity, Ayo Fadaka said even though the workers strike is unfortunate, but such action is not restricted to Ondo State as the spate of industrial action is ignited by the poor understanding of economic management of the APC led Federal Government.

PDP said: “It is widespread development across the nation as the factors responsible for it, here is a common development across the nation. It is instructive to declare that the insinuation concerning the Governor’s trip abroad in spite of the workers strike demonstrates clearly the poor understanding of the APC operatives on the workings of government.

“The fact that the Governor embarked on a working visit does not in any manner indicate that the apparatus of governance equally took a walk.

It explained that  while the Governor was away, the Commissioner for Finance was in Abuja in respect of the N14billion staggered loan the State is accessing to settle Workers salaries, the Deputy Governor equally attended a NEC meeting with the Vice President and the House of Assembly also sat to give approval to the Executive’s quest to get the aforementioned loan.

The statement said”It is also germane that we emphatically declare for the umpteenth time that Governor’s trip to the United Kingdom was sponsored by the authorities of the Chattam House who also took care of his stay and feeding while he was their guest.

“It was a working visit for the Governor who used the opportunity to enunciate the many achievements that have been recorded in our health sector, a factor that is responsible for his invitation in the first instance, and the need for the Governor to share this experience on a world platform.

“It is germane to mention that the Ondo model in health care will be of help in many developing nations since it has been made public in a cathedral of policy formulations that the Chattam House represents”.

PDP said the APC operatives in the State should learn a lesson in playing opposition, saying” It is our sincere opinion that it should constructively criticize developments in our State without being outlandish and pedestrian.

“The claim that the Governor lives in opulence in the Government House is the kind of cheap talk that reigns in a drinking joint, they should learn how to logically proffer the other view without being petty and it is only when they do this that they will attract the attention of the people.”

It maintained that the APC current stance of peddling abuses on the person of Governor Mimiko confirms their limitations, manners, quality of upbringing and ability to efficaciously play an opposition’s role.

  • Tension in Akure as Ogboni leader dies

There was palpable fear in Akure, the Ondo State capital, at the weekend following the death and burial of the President of the Reformed Ogboni Fraternity (ROF) in Nigeria, Chief Araba Ajemoju.

Ajemoju, who until his deathwas the head of ROF, died on Saturday and was buried according to traditional rites at his home, Araromi Street in Akure, the state capital.

Akure, his home town, was enveloped in fear as rumours prevailed that many people would be killed for rituals for the funeral of the late traditionalist.

Traditionalists from the six states of the Southwest region

converged in Akure for the burial and it was widely speculated that travellers would be used as sacrifice by the spiritualists.

The news, which went viral on the social media, prevented many people from travelling out of Akure.

Many businesses in the town were affected by the development as shops and other commercial places in the town were locked.

Police spokesman Femi Joseph said the culture and tradition of the people should be respected, stressing the need for people to co-operate with the

    traditionalists.

He added that the security of the people in Akure would be guaranteed.
