FIFA World Cup Qualifier: Akwa Ibom Stadium will be ready for Algeria tie

A top official of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has revealed to SportingLife that the federation has got sufficient assurance from the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel that the turf of the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo would be ready before the Super Eagles’ home tie with Algeria on November 7.

Eagles’ boss, Gernot Rohr complained about the pitch of the stadium during the final 2017 AFCON qualifier against Tanzania which Nigeria won 1-0 but  Governor Emmanuel during the reception held for the senior national team and the Taifa Stars shortly after the tie exuded confidence that the pitch would be iready before then.

An official of the NFF told SportingLife that the federation would wait patiently for the governor to fulfill what he said but that they still have the Adokie Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt waiting as an alternative to host Eagles’ home matches.

The source disclosed that the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike still wants to host Eagles home matches and despite the fact he brokered the link between the NFF and Governor Emmanuel he won’t mind still taking up the responsibility if the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo won’t be ready for the tie with the Desert Foxes of Algeria on November 7.

The Eagles will open their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with an away tie against the Chipolopolo of Zambia at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, Ndola on October 9 before hosting the Algerians in November.

Nigeria will next face Cameroon on August 28, 2017 at home before the return leg in Cameroon on September 2, 2017. The Eagles will also battle Zambia at home and Algeria away on October 2, 2017 and November 6, 2017 respectively.

2016 National Youth Games: Akwa Ibom targets top spot finish

The Permanent Secretary of Akwa Ibom State’s Ministry of Sports, Joseph Edem has said the state is targeting a top place finish at the 2016 National Youth Games kicking off today in Ilorin.

Edem, who spoke to newsmen during  their arrival in the Kwara State capital on Friday, said the state contingents are aiming to surpass their previous second-place finish in their last outing at this year’s  edition.

The permanent secretary said the state government had created an enabling environment for the athletes to excel at the games.

He further urged the Federal Government to take the youth games seriously,  citing the event as a grassroots platform to unearth future stars . Edem urged that stiff sanctions should be meted out to states caught fielding overage athletes,  suggesting ban of such state from the age-grade fiesta.

He added that the state will compete in 14 sports featuring 76 athletes alongside 32 technical officials at the one-week sporting event.

  • One year of Akwa Ibom’s Dakkada

Precisely on September 23, 2015 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium Complex, Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State launched the famous Dakkada Philosophy. The initiative was meant to chart a new course of greatness for the state believed to be named after the Qua Iboe River.

The governor must have been convinced, and rightly so, that there is hardly any progress anyone could make in life without a strong belief in the self-concept. There is a consensus of opinion among experts that human beings are powerful and are likely to accomplish whatever they set their minds at achieving. Even among the religious, the Tower of Babel in the Bible is one of the examples often cited to prove that unity and determination are strong factors in helping humans to achieve their goals, even if it meant building a tower to reach heaven.

So, the whole essence of the Dakkada creed is a call to unity and determination, a clarion call to encourage indigenes of Akwa Ibom State to believe in themselves and take their destinies in their hands in order to realize their full potentials.

There couldn’t have been a better time to instil a sense of patriotism and self inputs in a people whose main economic activities are fishing, farming, trading, artisanship and white-collar services – although a large population of the people are also in other parts of the world either blazing the trails, or in search of the proverbial greener pastures.

Yes, the Dakkada creed is a creed of greatness, of motivation.  It is a creed to jettison mediocrity for excellence in every sense of the word.  It is a clarion call on all Akwa Ibom sons and daughters to ignite their love for their state and the nation. Going by the creed, the people should always believe that they could accomplish anything good as individuals. The creed believes in the potential of every Akwa Ibomite to unleash their potentials.

It may be difficult for anyone to fault the importance of focus as an essential ingredient in the desire for greatness either as an individual, state or a corporate entity.  So, it is not unusual that the governor’s initiative is being commended.

No doubt, it is good for governments to have policies that will be their driving forces. And it is commendable that a creed like the Dakkada is not being seen as a mere government policy but a philosophy that people could buy into, something that could be well formed in their sub-consciousness. Attitudinal change is pivotal to experiencing growth and development especially in an underdeveloped economy as Nigeria’s. Everyone should be involved in lifting the nation’s economy from the doldrums.

The government should constantly carry the people along for the Dakkada philosophy to work effectively. Thankfully, the governor is seizing the period of the celebration of the 29th anniversary of the state created on September 23, 1987, to mark the one year celebration of the Dakkaba creed. It should not end there. Government should use this anniversary to appraise its effectiveness in galvanizing the people of Akwa Ibom towards greatness.

The creed itself is seen by many as a stimulus for the actualisation of the governor’s five-point agenda of job creation, poverty alleviation, wealth creation, economic and political inclusion as well as infrastructural consolidation and expansion. It will be recalled that the first thing the governor did when he got to power in 2015 was to assemble a technical team of experts to drive his administration’s development plans.

Also, at his inaugural speech on May 29, 2015, the governor had asked every person from the state to “come with their hoes and shovels to bury the twin evils of ethnicity and tribalism,” which according to him, are capable of slowing the state down in the race of development. He had also advised the people to sow the seeds of brotherhood, love and unity to energise the people of the state to   maintain their current momentum and leadership position.  He had told the people to “remember that with the spirit of brotherhood, love and unity, no foe can defeat us, and no rival can overtake us.’’

But, the spirit of patriotism is not enough to build a state. It is laudable that the governor has put in place a think-tank of tested and qualified professionals with sound administrative acumen to assist in moving the state forward. The administration’s free and compulsory education policy; free health care services for pregnant women; children between age zero and five and the aged; in addition to other welfare packages for the people, are also commendable.

No doubt the administration has recorded some accomplishments across all sectors of the economy. With a budgetary allocation of N65.42bn in 2015 state appropriation and N91.8bn in 2016, infrastructural development and road construction, bridges and drainages have remained some of the priorities of the administration.

And  to mark the one year of the Dakkada creed, the governor has said he would be flagging off the construction of 19.3 kilometres Anua-Mbak-Ishiet Road; construction of Ikpe Ikot Nkon-Obotme-Arochukwu Road;  and construction of 17.4 km Odoro Ikpe Mbiabet Ikpe-Mbiabet Ikot Udo Road [Rice Mill Road] with 30m span bridge. All these, according to the governor are targeted at making the state self-sufficient.

Indeed, the step being taken towards the industrialization of the state via construction of major roads, infrastructural developments and agricultural schemes including the Cocoa production scheme are all steps that can accelerate the state’s journey towards its desired destination of greatness. If these steps are sustained, the journey to greatness of Akwa Ibom state may be nearer than what is being imagined.

It is very important for political office holders to know that mobilising people for greatness must go hand in hand with development schemes to achieve government’s goals and objectives.

The people should constantly be at the centre of every government policy. It is not enough to ask people to think great thoughts. The leadership must do its own part. The easiest way to get the cooperation of the citizens is by doing things that will make them happy.

Leaders should learn to fulfil their part of the bargain in order to commit the citizenry to do their part.  It is a two-way thing. A government that strives to meet the needs of its people will not struggle to earn their confidence and cooperation.

  • Roads in Akwa Ibom roar back to life as NDDC comes to the rescue

Roads in Akwa Ibom roar back to life as NDDC comes to the rescue

After years of neglect, nine roads in very bad shapes in Akwa Ibom State are gradually getting a new lease of life courtesy of emergency repairs by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Ukana Offot Street in the heart of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State is a major link road between two all important dualised roads, Aka Road and Abak Road. On the road are major commercial, residential buildings and two major federal government institutions, the National Examination Council (NECO), and the Federal Science and Technical College. The emergency management warehouse of the office of the deputy governor is also situated on the road.

For years, the connection of the major parts of the road has been a signpost for describing a bad road: abandoned; pot hole-filled; neglected; impassable; flooded; deplorable.

Thanks to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the road will soon be a signpost for every good thing a road should be: good, passable, asphalted, good drains.

Work is ongoing on the road as part of the commission’s emergency repairs and intervention of roads across the regions. Other roads across the state on the  list for repairs are Clement Isong Street, Uyo; School Road and environs, Uyo; Enwang-Ibaka Road, Mbo Local Government Area; Udoh Street, Uyo; Uko-Eshiet street and environs, Uyo, Ibiaku-Ishiet-Adiaha Road, Uruan and  Enen Ekpene Road, Eket and portions of the Calabar-Itu highway.

At Ukana Offot, Managing Director of GOP Ltd, contractors handling the repairs, Mr. Brownson Udoh, says the work is going on smoothly. He said “we have just finished creating drains with cache pits for a distance of over 500 metres. We have also dressed the shoulders, poured stone base and priming is going on.”

By next week, Mr. Brownson said the company will pour asphalt on about a distance of 750meters fromAka Road junction to Silas Udo junction.

Residents of the area are elated. Some of them who spoke to this reporter said they are grateful to the NDDC for the job done on the road. “For many years, we have been crying over this road.  Even when the last administration had what it called operation fill pot holes in the state, Ukana Offot was not considered. From little pot holes, it grew into a major problem.  We could not pass to Abak Road. We had to be trekking through adjourning street to get to Abak Road. We also suffered high transportation costs. No keke or taxi wanted to come here even from Aka Road which was also bad, we are grateful that we have been remembered”, Anietie Udofia, a resident of the street said.

Another resident, Imaobong Effiong who attends one ofthe major churches on the road, the Assemblies of God Church, said “at a point, going to church for evening programme was a problem. You will trek for a long distance to get to Abak Road end. At some times, hoodlumsstarted taking advantage of people by attacking them around the golden Palace Hotel end. We had to be trekking through other linking streets around there, we very very happy that NDDC is constructing the road”.

A NECO  Staff who spoke on the condition of anonymity  said  their joy knew no bounds when the road was being marked by  workers of  GOP Ltd. “We were surprised because roads were being constructed and repaired all over the state in the last ten years  but here, we passed through hell  going to work and back.  We had to trek through other streets like NEPA Line, Port Harcourt Street and others in this environment to get to work and back. We are very happy that NDDC has done this”.

On School Road, work is also ongoing and residents are as well excited.  Some students of the University of Uyo living in the environment gathered in a group when one of them was asked what he thought of the repair work. It became a cacophony of voices as they tried to outwit each other to make comment: “Tell NDDC they have done well”, “Please extend it to Urua Ekpa”. (Urua Ekpa is a major road that links Itu Road and Ikpa Road where the town campus of the University of Uyo is situated and is in a deplorable state). “We are happy”, “More roads please”,   “Now we can move out”.

The contractor on the site believesthe work will be finished on schedule. Same goes for Ibiaku-Eshiet-Adiadia Road which hosts a major sea food market in the state, the Adiadia market.  Market women who trade in fish and crayfish said the NDDC has done well by remembering the roads for repairs. “We suffered high transportation costs because of the bad nature of the road.   This always affected our own price when we sell the items in the open market.  Now, with this road, the cost of transportation will be down. So, we are happy that NDDC is doing well”, Mrs. Enobong Inyang, a trader said.

The Calabar-Itu Highway is the major road linking Cross River State to other South-South, South-Eastern and South-Western States in Nigeria.  A large portion of it is in Akwa Ibom State.  For many years also, the road has been in a deplorable condition.Recently though, it has moved from deplorable to impassable. Cars hardly arrived at their destination as they get stucked in the road. Trucks fall at will, at bad spots, blocking the roads and making transporters and commuters suffer huge losses.

For some months, nobody could enter Calabar through the road. Thanks to NDDC also, repair works has started on the road. This was after Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, Acting Managing Director of the NDDC, paid an on-the-spot visit to the road.  Shocked by the deplorable nature of the road, she ordered an immediate deployment of a contractor to carry out repairs in major portion of the road.  A visit to the road reveals that her directives have been adhered to. Base Engineering Ltd., one of the contractors has fully mobilized to site and is working on some failed portion of the road. One of the major failed portions worked on in the Akwa Ibom end is just before the Itu bridge head.

Commuters and drivers are happy. One of the drivers Efa Archibong, told this reporter that the intervention by NDDC, though long overdue, was welcomed. He commended the NDDC, saying “If other agencies can be like this, most of our roads would have been fixed”. A commuter, Iboro Udobia said though the emergency repairs were good, the road needs a complete re-construction.  “The emergency repair is good and Icommend the NDDC for this but what this particular road needs is a complete re-construction from Calabar to Aba. It should be 8-Lane and toll gates marked out on the road. We will pay. The road is too important for the socio-economic life of the old Eastern Region”,   he said.

Speaking to this reporter the Special Assistant to the Acting Managing Director of the NDDC, Mr. Bekee Anyalewechi, said “the intervention was in fulfillment of one of the core mandates of the NDDC – that of conception, planning and implementation of projects and programmes for sustainable development of the Niger Delta area in the field of transportation, including roads, jetties and waterways.”

He said the acting Managing Director, Mrs. Semenitari “has changed fully well the public perception of NDDC as non-performing and wasteful. She has committed resources to only areas that are beneficial to people of the region. These emergency repair projects all over the region are one of those areas. From the feedback we are getting, the people are happy and it gives the acting MD satisfaction that one of the mandates of the commission is being fulfilled.”

  • Honour for Akwa Ibom governor

    Honour for Akwa Ibom governor

It was a gathering of sons and daughters of Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio (MMI) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State to celebrate Mboho’s 29th anniversary and honour Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel.

The Executive Director, Human Resources, ExxonMobil, Mr. Udom Inoyo, who chaired the occasion, spoke against  the dwindling values and morals among Nigerians for money.

Quoting Henry Paulson, Inoyo said: “In just about every area of society, there’s nothing more important than ethics.”

Inoyo stressed the inestimable importance of integrity, good name and leaving behind legacies that will be exemplary to  future generations.

He stated that an interview with former Ghanaian PresidentJerry Rawlings reminded him of how “fantastically low we (Nigerians) now are on matters of morals even in spite of our enthusiastic and sometimes aggressive embrace of religion”.

He went on: “You can see churches in almost all nooks and crannies of the state and no function takes place without having on the agenda an opening and closing prayers, irrespective of how the event will end.  Yet, things are getting worse. I am a witness that it never used to be so, and while there are many postulations for the current decay, I’m sure there is also alignment that this country we so love will continue to struggle until we pay serious attention to our moral values.”

He cited examples of how palaces of some billionaire Nigerians, who were guarded by heavy security, were taken over by weeds, rodents and termites just few years after their death, which highlights the vanity of placing undue value on wealth.

He said: “Since it appears that as a people, we have lost our sense of purpose on earth, given our selfishness and relentless pursuit of wealth, at all cost, and at the expense of what should really matter in life, I am reminded to ask you today to reflect on the question: what do we really want in life?”

To Emmanuel, the ExxonMobil director said: “We know that awards in Nigeria, especially those accorded persons of power and influence, are sometimes unmerited and with the value significantly discounted once the recipient is no longer in a position of influence to grant favours.  But there are recipients whose values never diminish, whether in or out of public office. Bob Marley, the greatest reggae expositor that ever lived once said that ‘’the greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.

“I have known Governor Emmanuel for over two decades and in this period, he has demonstrated some admirable attributes – hard work and humility. His meteoric rise in his chosen career of banking remains a testimony to the virtue of hard work, dedicated service, honesty and trustworthiness. Unfortunately, these attributes are in short supply in our society today and it is my hope that we would be able to restore them knowing these attributes use to define what we stood for as a people. We must therefore reorient our young ones to emulate and tow this honourable path. We must arrest the shameless resort to easy handouts from political office holders which breeds a culture of praise-singing and has sadly become a widely accepted norm. Bongos Ikwue, the sonorous musician, told us many years ago that, nothing good comes easy.

“Almost everyone who has managed to get into the public space today talks about political structures and consolidation of power, I wish the same passion will go into building a culture of excellence in service. It is my hope that it is these and many more qualities that have made Udom deserving of this award by MMI. If this is so, and not just because he is holding the office of Governor today, then the best legacy of today’s event will be for Mboho to imbibe and propagate these values. That way, your award will occupy an enduring place in Udom’s heart even beyond 2019.”

Inoyo urged MMI to remain that “institution that advocates what is noble and right, speaking up for the voiceless, and uniting all Akwa Ibom people”.

He added: “ I know you have invested in education, awarded scholarships and even building a school. Please continue in this all-important cause, knowing that, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’.”

To the governor, he said: “This honor should spur and motivate you to do more. Don’t rest on your oars. Your concern about the welfare of our people, majority of whom continue to wallow in abject poverty, is well known and though handicapped by the significant decline in the revenue stream, you should remain committed to programmes that will energise the economy and put money in the hands of many and not just a few. Continue to ensure probity in governance, and do everything in your powers to utilise the services of our best and brightest to move the state forward.”

  • Akwa Ibom to host NAFEST 2016

Akwa Ibom to host NAFEST 2016

AKWA Ibom Deputy Governor Moses Ekpo has urged culture chiefs to fashion a blueprint for turning the nation’s culture into a major foreign exchange earner.

This, he said,  became necessary given the Federal Government’s re-investment drive in the culture and tourism.

Ekpo stated that Nigeria could become a global power in culture and a major exporter of culture with right mix of resources and tourism integration. He stressed the need for a massive cultural revival through strategic acculturation.

He spoke at the 45th meeting of the Chief Executives of Culture of the Federation (CEC) at the Governor’s Office Annex in Uyo.

The festival’s theme: Exploring the goldmine inherent in Nigeria’s creative industries, was adopted at the meeting. It will hold in Uyo between October 2 and 9.

National Council for Arts and Culture and Chairperson (CEC) Director-General, Mrs. Dayo Keshi, said the agenda for the meeting were the final adoption of the NAFEST syllabus, assessment the hosting state’s preparedness to host the fiesta and to elicit the input for a successful NAFEST.

Keshi charged the executives to find ways of improving on the presentation and marketing of festivals while inventing new ones.

Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Otuekong Emmanuel Ibiok, called on stakeholders in the industry to explore the option of partnering with corporate and private investors to organise a  viable and glamorous NAFEST 2016.

At the meting were representatives of chief executives of federal parastatals of culture (National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) and National Commission for Museums and Monument (NCMM), and 13 Directors of State Council for Arts and Culture/History and Culture Bureaux, including (Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Ogun, Rivers, Plateau).

  • Jonathan’s man, King, defects to APC in Akwa Ibom

Professor Richard King, a close ally of former President Goodluck Jonathan, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State.

Prof. King was a member of G-22, the group eyeing last year’s governorship seat in Akwa Ibom State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

But the group boycotted the primary, which produced Governor Udom Emmanuel, because of what it called the impunity of one man’s desire to control the state perpetually.

Speaking during his defection yesterday at the party’s office in Uyo, the state capital, Prof King said the PDP was crumbling because its cement of impunity could no longer hold the pieces together again.

The expert noted that the immobility of the party will not make the collective aspirations of Nigerians a reality in the face of the party’s internal conflicts and wrangling.

He said:  ”PDP can no longer yield our desired dreams. It is so disappointing to note that the party is no longer a worthy vehicle that can meaningfully and copiously avail a capacity to rue in and deliver the objectives of democracy to Nigerians and Akwa Ibom people.

“It is to this chagrin, and having been totally dissatisfied with administration and the running of affairs of the PDP in Akwa Ibom State that I and my party faithful this day declare for the APC. I urge you all to also embark on the massive cross-over from a sinking ship in turbulence to a party of focus, vision, objective and a strong commitment to meaningfully changing and redefining the future of our great country Nigeria.

  • More Akwa Ibom communities to benefit from electrification project

The Akwa Ibom State Government has given assurance that more rural communities will benefit from the electricity extension programmes in the state.

The Commissioner in the Ministry of Rural Development, Ekong Sampson gave the assurance while playing host to residents of Onyungo Aban community of Nung Oku Ibesikpo in Ibesikpo-Asutan Local Government Area, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office yesterday.

The rural development boss reiterated the commitment of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration to its 2-year electrification programme, which according to him, is ongoing. He also emphasized that no part of the State will be left out.

Sampson made it known that the State Government is appreciative of the Ibesikpo-Asutan people, considering the enormous contributions of some of their illustrious indigenes to the State Government’s success.

He said his ministry has overtime shown reasonable level of concern towards Ibesikpo-Asutan power supply, especially to control possible pressure that power shortage in the area might put on the capital city of Uyo. He said Ibesipko-Asutan LGA has received the highest number of transformers from the Ministry.

The leader of the delegation and chairman of the Onyungo Aban residents’ forum, Mr. Etim Iton, commended the Honourable Commissioner for his efforts in channeling Government’s attention to address the concerns of rural communities. He also expressed trust in the present administration, describing its agenda as revolutionary.

Iton, lamenting about the challenge of poor power supply, said that extremely low voltage, most times unusable electricity has been really frustrating; especially with the condition of outrageous billings.

According to him, the community has made several self-help efforts to fix their faulty transformer but has not been able to emerge from the plague.

His words: “We have heard how the government, through your Ministry, is saving such small communities like ours all over the State, so we have come with confidence that the goodwill of this government will be extended to us.”

Sampson explained that release of transformers by his Ministry has been based strictly on need. He therefore promised that his team of Engineers will carry out proper assessment, so as to boost power supply to the area.

The Commissioner also addressed concerns over poor power supply and outrageous billing by power distribution companies, noted that the power sector has been privatised.

He urged the group to encourage community members to pull together and explore the mechanism of consumer right advocacy to articulate their concerns. With such, he said, local communities will be able to constructively address some of their key concerns in the power sector.

  • Floods threaten communities in Akwa Ibom

Floods threaten communities in Akwa Ibom

The predictions by the Nigerian Metrological Agency, (NiMeT) and the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA) on the impending flood in some parts of the country especially in the South-South has taken its toll on some parts of Akwa Ibom as water levels have generally risen beyond the conventional, writes Kazeem Ibrahym

The Nigerian Metrological Agency, (NiMeT) had warned of impending flooding this year in 11 states of Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Kaduna, Kwara, Nasarawa, Yobe and Zamfara.

At Nto Edino, headquarters of Obot Akara Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, the tidal waves have led to the collapsed of the only bridge that links Akwa Ibom State with Abia State, thereby impacting negatively on business activities between the two states.

The situation has hampered the ongoing construction of 6.41km Nto Edino – Ekwere-Azu road project in the area, and made many commuters to find it difficult to cross either side for fear of being drowned.

When The Nation visited the affected area, the flood had also caused serious harm to some portion of the Nto Edino Road currently under construction by the State Government, as most of the earth works, between the two parallel rivers for which two bridges are under construction, have been washed away.

Infact the two parallel rivers which are more than 250m apart have been merged into one huge river. Even farmlands close to the river area have also been submerged.

The managing director of the construction company handling the road, Seyang Limited, Mr Samuel Inyang said although the job has been seriously affected by the development, his company was committed to executing the job to completion.

Inyang, an engineer, said that the disaster took everybody unawares, adding that he informed the State Government via both the supervising Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Environment on the development.

Some community leaders in the area told our reporter that though their farmlands have been washed away and movement hampered, they were happy that the flood has come at a time the road construction was taking place.

Chief Etim Udo from Nto Edino said they were sleeping with their eyes open because of the development, calling on the state and federal governments to come to their aid.

Udo, who is a retired engineer with the erstwhile Cross River Ministry of Works, said the two submerged bridges should be incorporated into the road construction work, if the flood disaster is to be contained.

He, however, thanked the Gov. Udom Emmanuel-led government for awarding the contract to an indigenous firm that has the “capacity and expertise to deliver.”

Only recently, the Akwa Ibom government directed the chairmen of 15 Local Government Areas prone to flooding to build camps for rescue of victims in view of anticipated flood.

The state deputy governor, Mr Moses Ekpo, represented by the state’s Flood Sensitisation Campaign Team led by the director of administration, Deputy Governor’s Office, Mrs Ekaette Ekanem, gave the directive at Itu centre of the campaign.

It is on record that the state government had already categorised the 15 flood prone local government areas into four groups for purpose of the sensitisation.

The Oron group comprised of Oron, Udung Uko, Mbo, Urue Offong/Oruko and Okobo LGAs while Ibeno group or centre was made up of Eket, Esit Eket, Onna and Ibeno Local Government Areas.

The local government areas in Ikot Abasi group or centre are Mkpat Enin, Eastern Obolo, Ikot Abasi while Itu centre comprised of  Uruan, Ibiono Ibom and Itu Local Government Areas.

Ekanem said that the state government was working towards providing relief materials to victims of flooding that would be identified by the local council authority during the emergency.

Her words:  ”The local government chairmen are instructed to prepare emergency camps for the people upland.

“The state government will assist with other relief materials should the anticipated flood occurs.”

She advised the people living in coastal communities to begin retrieving their valuables and relocate to upland now before the anticipated flood takes place.

Ekanem also provide emergency telephone lines to the people and pleaded with them to call for help during flood disaster and any emergency.

The sensitisation team is made up of personnel from the State Ministries of Environment, Information and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
