Police to arraign five over killing of APC chieftain

Five suspected murderers arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police in connection with the assassination of former speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Okon Uwah, are to appear in court Wednesday.

Until his death, the late Uwah was the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly candidate for Ukanafun State Constituency.

He was murdered last Wednesday bysuspected Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) thugs at Ikot Akpan Nkek in Ukanafun Local Government Area while on a political campaign meeting.

Speaking Tuesday during an exclusive interview with The Nation, the State’s Commissioner of Police, Gabriel Achong, said aside from the four persons arrested in relation with the killing of the former deputy speaker, his men were able to pick one more suspect on Monday.

Achong said: “Aside from the four people arrested when I addressed press conference on Saturday, we were able to pick up more one person yesterday (Monday). By tomorrow, if you care, go to court, you will see that the people will be charged to court. Justice will take its own path. The police have actually done their own path.

“I thank the people of Akwa Ibom for being patience with the police and assisting the police to get the number of suspects we have gotten so far. I still encourage them to assist the police so that we get remaining suspect so that everybody will be charged to court.

“Whoever commits any offence he is not committing the offence for any political party he is committing the offence for himself and he will be charged to court for himself and he will be handled for himself.

“I am not charging PDP to court. I am not charging APC to court. I am charging the culprits to court. Whoever commits any offence will be charged to court with his name not any political party.”

When asked how prepared the command is for Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly polls, the CP said his men are in high spirit and they are fully ready to protect both the materials of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and human beings that are going to cast their votes.

The CP, who kept the number of his men that would be deployed for polls to his chest, said: “That is purely operational. I cannot tell you the number of men I am going to deploy but I am assuring you that I have sufficient men to cover all the polling units in the state.

“We urge the citizenry to come out to cast their votes to the candidates of their choice without fear and intimidation from anybody.”

  • Group protests broadcast violations in Akwa Ibom

A group, Concerned Citizens of Akwa Ibom State (CCAIS), has protested the various broadcast violations by the state-funded broadcast media and has consequently written a strong-worded petition to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), a federal agency saddled with the responsibility of regulating broadcasting in Nigeria.

A statement issued by Austin Akan, the group, among other things, is accusing the state-funded radio and television stations of not only giving ample airtime to the government of the day, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its agents but completely blank out other political parties and individuals who are not sympathetic to the government or the PDP and its agents.

In a protest letter titled: “Protest over Broadcast Violations in Akwa Ibom State”, the petition signed by Austin Akan and Emmanuel Ukpong, Chairman and Secretary respectively, the group draws the attention of the NBC to the flagrant abuse of the broadcast codes in the operations of the state radio and television stations. They specifically mentioned that the two stations have been very unprofessional, bias, discriminating, unfair and unethical in the coverage of events and programmes in the state.

The group accused the state broadcast stations of pandering to the whims and caprices of the state government, The PDP and its agents in doing its statutory work, to the utter exclusion of other political parties and their sympathisers. They specifically mentioned that these station, funded by the tax payers, not only deliberately stopped any opposing advertisements from other political parties but totally exclude other them or their agents from their news coverage or appearing in their programmes. ‘Balancing of news items is really strange to these stations,’ the protest letter noted.

They, therefore, rely on the National Broadcasting Commission Decree No. 38 of 1992, as amended by the Act of National Assembly 2002, to draw attention to the functions of the NBC, which is authorised to “receive, authorise and investigate complaints from individuals and bodies corporate regarding the conduct of Broadcast Stations in Nigeria

The group also cited sections 9(1a), (1e) and 10(b) of the codes which expressly stated that, in being issued licences, these stations should undertake to “use the stations to promote national interest, unity and cohesion, and shall not be used to offend religious sensibilities, or promote ethnicity, sectionalism, hatred and disaffection among the people.”

The CCAIS also draws the attention of the NBC to the Third Schedule (Section 7) of the Broadcast Code which confers on the Commission an oversight function to inspect broadcast materials and programme logs, and therefore implore it to commence an immediate inspection of these stations with view to applying sanctions as stipulated in Section 8 of the Broadcast code. The section recommends withdrawal of licences, fines and caution, depending on the weight of the offence.

It could be recalled that Rt Hon Ita Enang, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Business and Rules and the Senator representing Akwa Ibom North East constituency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria had earlier voiced his displeasure in the conduct of the Akwa Ibom state radio and television stations.

  • Akwa Ibom, Cross River indigenes back APC

Group, the Confederation of Akwa Ibom and Cross River Indigenes in Lagos, has endorsed all the All Progressives Congress Party (APC) candidates in Lagos State.

The convener of the group, Mrs. Lizzy Eyo, said: “We the indigenes of Akwa Ibom and Cross River states in Lagos, see ourselves as Lagosians as many of us in my generation were born and raised  here in Lagos, not to talk of the many others who daily migrate to live in Lagos in search of  better opportunities. We understand the indigenous culture and can even speak the language fluently as well and invariably we make up a sizeable population which cannot be ignored by any serious political party. Lagos is the centre of excellence where opportunities are provided for every Nigerian to thrive,as such we will support the continuity of progress so far made in Lagos State, by fully supporting the All Progressives Congress Party (APC) all the way”.

A town hall meeting organised by the group at the Mende Town Hall in Kosofe Local Government Area had in attendance, big wigs of the party, such as likes of Chief S.A. Sunmola, Hon. Bayo Osinowo, Kosofe constituency 1 House of Assembly Candidate, House of Representatives candidate for Kosofe Federal Constituency, Hon Rotimi Agunsoye, Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Hon Bosun Jeje and other party stalwarts.

  • Cleric to Jonathan: beware of Akwa Ibom officials

Cleric to Jonathan: beware of Akwa Ibom officials

Akwa Ibom State Accord Party’s governorship candidate, Bishop Samuel Akpan, has cautioned President Goodluck Jonathan to be wary of associating with some officials of the Akwa Ibom State government.

The cleric said such officials were getting too close to the President whereas they did not mean well for him.

He described such people as too diabolical, adding that Jonathan might regret this association with them, if he did not take caution.

Akpan said: “Jonathan is a good man, a child of God and a competent leader. But he should stay off these people before he regrets the evil association.”

The Accord Party’s candidate, who was a chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) until last December 8, spoke at the weekend at a dinner in his honour by the Jonathan Mandate Group (JOMAG).

Akpan is the Southsouth coordinator of the group, which is seeking support for Jonathan’s re-election bid.

The bishop warned Akwa Ibom State government officials to avoid destructice actions.

He said anyone attempting to destroy the state would incur the wrath of God.

Akpan said he had been quiet after several attacks on him, adding that he was forced to speak out on the President’s relationship with some government officials.

According to him, those involved should desist before the wrath of God befell them.

Akpan said: “I am using this opportunity to warn those who have been invoking my spirit and that of any other Akwa Ibom person that any more attempt, the Holy Spirit will react. They spend so much Akwa Ibom money to do wickedness in the state. God sent me to confound the wicked; I came with the support of the Holy Spirit to free the people from this fraternity. Our state is named after God and must not be associated with fraternities. We shall name names when the time comes.”

The cleric decried the “importation” of Indian, spiritualists and those he called cultists with the state’s funds to deal with people with contrary opinions to those in government.

He thanked his friends, party faithful and Akwa Ibom residents, who gathered at the K-Line, Ewet Housing Estate in Uyo, to finance his governorship campaigns.

Addressing a crowd in Uyo, Akpan said: “Never again will we allow a group of contractors to take our state backward. This new platform is the most determined political party in Akwa Ibom State. We have travelled to the 31 local government areas and our level of acceptability is overwhelming.”

  • Akwa Ibom abandons Ikono general hospital

The Akwa Ibom State Government has listed the Ikono General Hospital as one of the standard health institutions providing health care for the people.

But an inspection of the facility, last Friday, showed that it did not qualify for a hospital.

Many people, it was learnt, would not allow their dead to be taken to the hospital’s morgue.

The hospital has been taken over by bush.

The expansive hospital premises have decayed, following its abandonment by the state government.

When the State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) visited the hospital at Ibiaku Ntok Okpo, the once beautifully equipped and functional hospital had become decrepit. There were cobwebs everywhere.

A hospital built to care for hundreds of patients was found to have only one patient. It was learnt that the patient was still on admission because she had no money for the bills she would pay at Ikot Ekpene General Hospital.

Although some of the workers declined to speak with reporters because they were not so authorised, our correspondent learnt that several letters on the sorry state of the hospital had been written to the government through the State Health Management Board. The management was said to have received no response from the government.

The decay has affected the seven departments in the hospital.

    Almost all equipment are affected.

A senior worker, who spoke in confidence, said: “There is no power supply here; there are no toilets, no water, no workers. Doctors don’t live here. The place is now snake-infested. The quarters are not good. So, we cannot handle patients most of the times. We need total renovation here. Government officials came here sometime ago, talked with us, took pictures of the extent of decay and left.

“Ever since, nothing has been heard from them.”

It was learnt that whenever it rains, the water comes in from the theatre and other wards in the upper floors of the building. The roof of the hospital had broken down.

“We always pray that it does not rain because the whole place leaks,” a senior official told our correspondent.

The equipment in the theatre, laboratory, X-ray and every other department has been abandoned. The buildings have been covered by bushes.

A visit to the workers’ quarters, including the home of the resident doctor, was also abandoned.

Nobody was occupying the buildings because they had broken down and were in bushes. The few nurses and other workers appeared helpless.

The workers said they used torch lights in the night because of snakes.

Our correspondent saw a small Mantrac generator on the premises. It was said to have been donated by a public-spirited individual.

But the generator could only carry an infinitesimal percentage of the hospital. Its fuelling was another major issue.

It was learnt that drugs were often supplied but the nurse said they could not guarantee their efficacy because they were exposed to abnormal temperatures.

A nurse said the hospital was grossly understaffed, adding that there was just one security officer, who would retire soon.

There were two casual workers and two cleaners who ensured the hygiene of the expansive facility.

On revenue generation and the state of the hospital, a worker said the hospital was making about N100,000 a month.

During the correspondents’ visit to his palace, the paramount ruler of Ikono, Edidem Nyong Obop, said: “We are not happy about the situation. The hospital is dilapidated. I won’t criticise the government because it has done so much for Ikono residents, including the dilapidated hospital. The best thing to do is to go there and see things for yourselves.”

  • Akpabio to Akwa Ibom youths: don’t sacrifice for APC

Akpabio to Akwa Ibom youths: don’t sacrifice for APC

Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio yesterday warned the youth not to sacrifice their lives for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor said the lives of the youth were too precious to be wasted by the opposition.

He noted that if youths give their lives for APC’s course, they would be misguided.

Akpabio spoke in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally for the party’s governorship candidate, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

The governor noted that in the face of the political season, selfish politicians would want to use their positions to deceive youths into sacrificing their lives.

  • Why Akwa Ibom won’t vote for Jonathan, by Buhari’s men

A group, Grassroots Mobilisers for Buhari (GMB), has given 15 reasons why Akwa Ibom State should not and will not vote for President Goodluck Jonathan in the March 28 presidential elections.

The group, in a statement yesterday signed by its Akwa Ibom State Coordinator, Amb. Aniefiok Brownson and its Secretary, Ukpong Emem, said no single federal project was established in Akwa Ibom in the six years that President Jonathan presided over affairs of the country.

They also explained that all federal roads linking Akwa Ibom with neighbouring states, such as Cross River, Abia and Rivers states had broken down while President Jonathan and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) paid no attention to the plight of Akwa Ibom people.

The group also slammed President Jonathan for ignoring and neglecting the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, despite being the first and the only federal-owned maritime school in Nigeria, and instead did a ground-breaking for a maritime university in Delta State.

They said: “Nothing exemplifies the disrespect Goodluck Jonathan has for Akwa Ibom people more than the ill-treatment he gave to the aggrieved PDP governorship aspirants, popularly known as G22 in Akwa Ibom State.

“President Jonathan sent a powerful PDP delegation led by Vice President Namadi Sambo to Lagos State to placate a failed PDP governorship aspirant Musiliu Obanikoro, who refused to accept the outcome of the PDP primaries in Lagos State.

“The same Goodluck Jonathan and the national leadership of PDP deliberately refused to meet with our own G22 just because they are from Akwa Ibom State which in Jonathan’s estimation does not deserve any respect.

‘’Today, just to please Obanikoro, President Jonathan has nominated him for a ministerial appointment. But in the case of Akwa Ibom State, the G22 didn’t even get a mention, a mere mention, from Jonathan when the President came to campign in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.”

The group also lamented that President Jonathan’s politics of exclusion had greatly reduced the respect and influence of great Akwa Ibom politicians like Chief Don Etiebet and Obong Victor Attah within PDP and unfortunately denied our state a voice at the national politics.

  • Akpan: APC has come to stay in Akwa Ibom

Akpan: APC has come to stay in Akwa Ibom

Imo Akpan is the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives candidate for Ikono/Ini Constituency. In this interview with Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI, the lawyer agues that the ruling party created a fertile ground for the APC to thrive in Akwa Ibom State.

Why did you abandon your law practice for politics?

Like every contest, the primary impetus is personal. The second reason is that I want to serve my people. There are obvious lapses that have been created in my constituency, in terms of providing the basic necessities to improve the lot of the people and the dearth of infrastructure generally. For me, the main reason why attention has not been focused on those areas is because sufficient ‘noise’ has not been made to highlight the plight of the people. Where such attention has been drawn, there is no sufficient political will on the part of those in positions of authority to address these issues. Given my background and training, I believe I have sufficient passion to drive through the process of attracting the necessary infrastructure, to uplift the standard of our people. In fact, fundamentally, the two local government areas that make Ikoni/Ini federal constituency are regarded historically as the cradle of the Ibibio nation. In the ethnic make-up of Nigeria, the Ibibio race is number four; after the three major ethnic groups. But, ironically, all you hear from the Ibibio nation is the cries of marginalization, lack of development and backwardness. I don’t believe that we have taken our place in the comity of ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.

How do you intend to attract development, since you would not have executive powers?

I am aware of the duties of a legislator and I know that in attracting development to a particular constituency, a lot of lobbying would be required. Lobbying is the essential tool a legislator has to employ. Given my background, not just as a lawyer, but also as someone who has lived in almost all parts of the country, I would not have problems interacting with legislators from other areas, to get them to see the need to bring development to our area. Inter-personal relationship also comes into play. Healthcare is one of the critical issues. The basic infrastructure for healthcare is non-existent in the two local government areas that make-up the constituency. Though the two local government areas can boast of two general hospitals, but they are nothing to write home about. The one in Ini Local Government Area is a beautiful edifice put in place by the last administration of Obong Victor Attah, but it is not equipped at all. The one in Ikono Local Government Area has been there for at least 30 years, but it is also not equipped.  In fact, it has no source of power, no water and its roof has caved in. So, we must make sure that we impress it on the executive to attend to the yearnings of our people in the healthcare sector. The other area is education. The infrastructure to guarantee qualitative education in my federal constituency is non-existent. Fundamentally you need the manpower; the right quality of teachers who can impact knowledge. The stories you hear about free education in Akwa Ibom State is about renovating buildings and having red roofs put over them.

The PDP has been in power in Akwa Ibom since 1999. W hat are your chances?

Our chances are very bright. The state has been badly run by the PDP administration. Right now we have stronger presence of the opposition in Akwa Ibom State because a fertile ground has been laid by the government in power. The ranks of the opposition are swelling by the day because of the discontent among the people. If you look at the calibre of people we have as candidates in the APC, from the governorship down to the House of Representatives, then you will realize that our chances are indeed very bright. A lot of things we hear about the PDP and the uncommonness of its transformation are a media creation, especially your colleagues in the electronic media.

  • APC, PDP in make or mar contest in Akwa Ibom

APC, PDP in make or mar contest in Akwa Ibom

The general elections in Akwa Ibom State will be a stiff competition between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is waxing stronger by the day. Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI examines the contest for relevance between the two parties.

There is a crack within the ranks of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State that has seriously whittled down the influence of the party. The party has governed the state since the return to civilian rule in 1999 and was hitherto considered to be entrenched in the state. But, seeds of distrust had been sowed in the party over time because of the leadership style of Governor Godswill Akpabio, who has governed the state like his personal estate. Many of the founding fathers of the party had borne the whole thing with equanimity, believing that everything would be over soon with the expiration of Akpabio’s second term in May.

But, things began to fall apart as the December 8, 2014 governorship primary approached, when stakeholders realized that Akpabio was not ready to allow the contest to take place under a free and fair atmosphere. He turned deaf ear to entreaties by senior citizens from the state such as former Governor Victor Attah and Donald Etiebet, asking him to make the race open to all. Stakeholders in the state regard the candidature of Udom Emmanuel, the PDP governorship flag bearer, as a third term agenda on the part of the governor. As a result, things have moved from bad to worse since his emergence after the primary.

Twenty-two of the 23 governorship aspirants under the auspices of the ‘Forum of Akwa Ibom State PDP Gubernatorial Aspirants’ otherwise known as the G-22, alleged gross irregularities in the conduct of the primary. The aspirants registered their grievances in a petition signed by all of them and appealed for fair play and justice from the national leadership of the party. The major grievance is that no primary took place, as everything was skewed towards returning the governor’s anointed candidate, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, as the party’s flag bearer.

For instance, the aspirants said there was no accreditation of any delegate at the venue of the state congress. They insist that accreditation was done at the Government House, Uyo and that unqualified persons were smuggled into the venue with accreditation cards which was contrary to paragraph 19 (e) (f) and (g) of electoral guidelines, which stipulates that names of accredited delegates shall be announced to the hearing of all persons present. Though members of the G-22 have doggedly refused to leave the PDP, they are believed to be working underground to thwart Akpabio’s ‘third term agenda’.

What really went wrong in Akwa Ibom? Observers say the problem could be traced President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid for a second term. PDP governors are believed to have entered into an arrangement to return Jonathan for a second term in exchange for a free hand to choose their successors. This explains why the party is having internal crisis in most of the states it controls. “Our people are fed-up with the insults, arrogance and provocative insensitivity of President Jonathan and the PDP to the wishes of the people and they will show to the world that there is no gain or pride in slavery and imposition,” a source who wants to remain anonymous said.

Observers say in spite of the support President Jonathan enjoys from the state that there is no federal presence in terms of empowerment and projects and that Akwa Ibomites are totally disenchanted with the conspiratorial silence on and the obvious acquiescence of Mr. Jonathan with Akpabio’s dictatorial tendencies, especially the imposition of the party’s governorship flag bearer.

Akpabio has been accused of treating the people of Akwa Ibom with contempt and disrespect. In spite of the amount of money that accrues to the state on a monthly basis, the Akpabio’s administration has been squandering it without planning for the future of the state. On average, Akwa Ibom’s share of federally allocated revenue is five times that of the average state and the state is acknowledged as the richest state in Nigeria. Today, there is a veneer of tranquility when one drives through the streets of Uyo, the state capital. But, beneath the glitter and tranquility on the surface lies a deep rancour. Critics say there is no long term planning and that the government is squandering the states resources on white elephant projects.

Former Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly Uwem Udoma said healthcare is in shambles, agriculture remains at subsistence level and that government is paying lip service to education, but the environment is not conducive for learning and government has not provided facilities in the schools, especially in the hinterland. School pupils in the rural areas do not have access to laboratory equipment and a good number of them study in dilapidated structures. Udoma, who is now a chieftain of the APC said there is no functional hospital in the state, except the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, which is owned by the Federal Government.

Akpabio has no doubt constructed roads and put up some other physical infrastructures in the state. But, critics say what he has achieved is nothing, when compared with the amount of resources that accrues to the state. Indeed, some of the structures he has put in place is nothing but white elephant projects and critics say he has pocketed the “kickbacks” and the inflated costs from them, even though they are not yet operational. There are those who have been bought over by “Akpabiosm” and the “uncommon transformation” of the governor. To such persons, the PDP still remains the party of choice for the people of Akwa Ibom.

But, there are a growing number of persons who are insisting that the party has run short of ideas and that the electorates should try the alternative provided by the APC. The second school of thought believes that Akpabio wants to extend his tenure through Emmanuel. Constitutionally, the governor would be concluding his second term as governor in May, but if he succeeds in imposing his candidate, the incumbent governor would continue to hold on to the reins of power through his protégé.

Take the stadium for instance; he has refused to state the exact sum expended in putting up the structure. Yet, the stadium project has not been completed. The only unit that has been completed is the football arena. The swimming pool, the gymnasium and other components of the project are yet to be put in place. In spite of this, Akpabio went ahead to organise a extravagant opening ceremony believed to have gulped over N500 million.

There is also a lot of hype about the number of flyovers in Uyo. But, as far as many Akwa Ibomites are concerned, there is no need for such flyovers at the moment. In December last year, Akpabio also organized a profligate Christmas carol believed to have gulped over a N1 billion. Well known personalities, including Reverend Jesse Jackson, were brought from different parts of the globe to Uyo for the carol.

Yet, civil servants have not received their salaries since September last year. Workers in the local governments have been on strike since December and have vowed to remain on strike until all their demands are met. Chairmen of local governments owing salaries claim money released to them by Governor Akpabio could not cover their salary bills. Former chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Akwa Ibom State chapter, Felix Udo, said apart from unpaid salaries and allowances of workers, retired NULGE members had not been paid gratuities since 2009. The former NULGE boss said another reason for the strike was the irregular computation of salaries and allowances of local government workers.

Primary school teachers are also on indefinite strike over non-payment of salaries since last December. The schools are now ghost towns. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Akwa Ibom State chapter, said its members would not go back to classes until the state government fulfilled the agreement it reached with the teachers in concrete terms.

The union’s secretary, Mike Ike-Ene, said its members proceeded on the strike following the breach of agreement earlier reached between the government and the union. Unpaid salaries aside, teachers in the state have not been paid promotion arrears since 2009. Ditto their leave grants since 2012. Besides, there is also a huge backlog of pensions and gratuities due to Akwa Ibom primary school teachers.

For the first time since the return to civil rule in 1999, the opposition appears to have taken root in Akwa State politics. Umana’s defection to the APC has breathed life into the hitherto comatose opposition party. It has turned it into a viable alternative for the people, particularly for politicians who have crashed out of favour with the ruling PDP. With thousands of politicians who were hitherto the foot soldiers of the PDP in their respective political domains now in the APC, there are fears that the PDP has lost its steam in the state.

Apart from the likelihood that the PDP may lose the governorship election, there are fears that President Jonathan may not receive the kind of overwhelming support he got there in 2011. Most of those who have decamped to the APC have vowed to ensure that the President does not win in Uyo Senatorial District and the state as a whole. But, Akpabio is not impressed by Umana’s threat to sweep the polls. He described the threat as “laughable and impossible.” According to the governor, Umana has never been a politician and as such does not have the political clout to win the governorship.

Aside from the governorship election, the other contest generating interest in Akwa Ibom is the David versus Goliath senatorial election in Ikot Ekpene District, otherwise known as the Northwest Senatorial District. In the contest, Obong Inibehe Okori is challenging Governor Akpabio’s bid for the seat. Abak division, which is one of the two major components of the district, has turned against Akpabio and the PDP. After governing the state for eight years, Akpabio is bidding to retire to the Senate, against the subsisting agreement that the next senator from the district should come from the Abak division. As a result, there has been a frosty relationship between people from the area and Governor Akpabio. Okori, who is contesting on the APC platform, is one of the arrowheads of those protesting against the perceived injustice. Akpabio has tried to placate the people by choosing the running mate to Emmanuel from the area, but the people are saying it is not acceptable.

Indications are that the election is going to be keenly contested. But, Akpabio is widely expected to use his huge financial war chest to try to influence the outcome of the contest.  However, Okori is of the view that the Lord will give him victory, in spite of Akpabio’s huge war chest. His words: “What type of money does Akpabio have? Is it not the peoples’ money that has been entrusted in his hands? Is it justifiable for him to use this money to oppress the people? The God I worship would not allow that. As I speak to you, I want you to look at me once again; I am that David that fought Goliath; I am that Moses that confronted Pharaoh on behalf of the people of Israel. It shall come to pass.”

For the first time, ethnicity is going to be a major factor in the forthcoming election in the state. The state is made up of three major ethnic nationalities: Ibibio, Anang and Oron. In the governorship election, the Uyo Senatorial District, which is predominantly an Ibibio enclave, is expected to back Umana, who is an Ibibio person from that district. Umana defected to the APC along with a large chunk of PDP faithful and notable chieftains, who are opposed to the decision of Governor Akpabio and the PDP to exclusively zone the governorship slot to Eket and the governor’s insistence ticket, against the logic of zoning.

The entire Oron ethnic nationality (in Eket District) has resolved to back the APC. A group known as Oro Think Tank, an umbrella group of Oron stakeholders, made the above declaration last Thursday. It says that with the way are, an Oron person may not be able to govern the state in the next 24 years. The position of the group was articulated by its chairman, Comrade Okon Osung and secretary, Prof. Eminue. So, from all indications, the five local government areas that make up the Oron nation is likely to vote APC. Naturally, the three Ibibio local governments in Eket District, where Emmanuel comes from, may back the PDP flag bearer.

The Ibibios in the two local governments in Ikot Ekpene district are also likely to vote APC. Ikot Ekpene district has 10 local governments. Three of the local governments are from the axis where Akpabio comes from, while five belong to the Abak division where Okori hails from. Based on this calculation, Okori is very confident of victory in the senatorial race. He said: “To be honest with you, I am not aware of any prominent citizen of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial district that is supporting Akpabio’s ambition. The people that are adopting Akpabio are his commissioners, his special advisers, in short, his aides. Those are not political leaders. Besides, his performance in the state has no bearing on the legislative matter.” For the first time in 16 years of civil rule, the opposition held a rally in Ikot Ekpene last week Monday, which attracted a mammoth crowd.

  • Okori: APC ’ll liberate Akwa Ibom from tyranny

Okori: APC ’ll liberate Akwa Ibom from tyranny

All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate in Akwa Ibom Northwest District Chief Inibehe Okori is contesting against Governor Godswill Akpabio of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In this interview with Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI, he explains why people are defecting to the APC and how he intends to floor the governor at the poll.

Why are you running for the Senate?

The duty of a Senator is to make laws for the good governance of the country. I’m offering to go to the Senate to be able to cater for my people in line with constitutional requirements of the duties of a Senator. Secondly, it would enable me to impact on the lives and wellbeing of the people of Nigeria. It would also enable me to attract democracy dividends, which may come in different ways, such as constituency projects and what I would call government largesse.

What motivated you to go into politics?

I’ve been a professional in politics for quite some time. What motivated me is the desire to serve; to utilize the opportunity to attract the benefits of holding political office in Nigeria for my people.

Why are you running on the platform of the APC?

The quest for justice, equity and fairness brought me into the APC. The party has provided a platform for my people to be liberated. In real terms, the APC is here to right the wrongs committed by the ruling PDP. For instance, in my senatorial district the agreement is that the Senate seat should go to three local governments that make up Abak federal constituency, which is where I come from. Since 1963, when Nigeria became a republic that federal constituency has been represented in the Senate. In the senatorial district, we have four federal constituencies and the other three have had representatives at the Senate at least twice. So, I’m in the APC because the party is insisting that for the sake of justice, equity and fairness, the senatorial slot must be given to my constituency. Governor Godswill Akpabio, who is contesting on the PDP platform, comes from the Ikot Ekpene federal constituency, which has enjoyed the slot three times.

Akwa Ibom is believed to be a PDP state. You are also running against the governor. How do you intend to overcome the double challenge?

People often talk about incumbency, but it doesn’t really matter. Akpabio has been a governor, not a senator. So, you cannot say Akpabio as a senator did this or did that. Rather, I think I’m well positioned, considering my exposure in the country, particularly my relationship across geo-political zones. The Senate is a chamber made up of 109 members. It is a place you must synergise and work in tandem with your colleagues. It is not a place where you sit down and dish out directives to commissioners and other aides. You must be able to relate well with others in the course of your work, by extracting cooperation and exchanges with them. I have that gait, competence and capacity to synergise with colleagues and bring dividends of democracy closer to my people.

Incumbency has never been a factor in the election of a senator. Let me take you back into history. In 2007, two incumbent governors were defeated in the senatorial race. One of them is today the National Chairman of the PDP (Adamu Muazu); he was then the outgoing governor of Bauchi State. You see, democracy is a government of the people, by the people and for the people; it is a government of individuals like Akpabio and the like. So, for me, incumbency in this regard is not a big deal because democracy entails a social contract and politicians are expected to stick to the principles of the agreement. So, whether you are an incumbent or not is immaterial; once the agreement is breached, you must face the consequences.

Given the amount of money at Akpabio’s disposal, do you think you can match him, in terms of campaign spending?

Well, to God be the glory that people who have money don’t talk about it. The Bible says that when you bring yourself down, the Lord will lift you up and when you lift yourself up, He will bring you down. What type of money does Akpabio have? Is it the peoples’ money that is entrusted in his hands? Is it justifiable for him to use this money to oppress the people? The God I worship would not allow that. As I speak to you, I want you to look at me once again; I am that David that fought Goliath; I am that Moses that confronted Pharaoh on behalf of the people of Israel. It shall come to pass.

What is the major problem of your constituency?

Basically, it is poverty. People are really impoverished; most of them are living below $1 per day. So far, I have covered all the polling units within my constituency and I must confess to you that I am really sad about what I met on the ground. I am full of tears for my people. The infrastructure that you need to grow the economy is non-existent, particularly in this era when small and medium-scaled enterprises are encouraged to develop within clusters. All over the world, government has a support system for such SMEs, as a way of creating employment opportunities. There is also absence of medical care and educational facilities, particularly in this age when emphasis is on information and communication technologies (ICT).
