‘Uncommon transformation ‘ll continue in Akwa Ibom’

The Akwa Ibom Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has promised to continue with the uncommon transformation agenda of Governor Godswill Akpabio.

Emmanuel, who spoke at Ikot Ekpene Stadium, Ikot-Ekpene, also promised to provide jobs for youths to enable them earn a living.

He promised to empower women and widows, if elected as the governor.

Akpabio, who urged the people to support Emmanuel, said: “As a PDP state, we won’t allow propaganda to come into our state through opposition parties.  Marginalisation has been ruled out from Akwa Ibom State. Indeed, the PDP has brought transformation to our state and our country through industrialization. So,  PDP is owned by all of you and not by an individual”.

The governor said he was impressed by the massive turn out at the rally, urging them to sustain the tempo.

He urged the people to supprt President Goodluck Jonathan for second term, assuring that he will protect their interest.

Earlier, Akpabio had paid homage to the paramount ruler of Ikot Ekpene, Edidem Okuku Augustus Assiak at his residence and presented  Emmanuel to him as the candidate.

The PDP Chairman, Mr. Paul Ekpo, who presented flags to the parliamentary candidates, assured that Ikot Ekpene would vote for the PDP at the polls.

In their goodwill messages, stakeholders in Ikot Ekpene reaffirmed their support for President Jonathan’s bid for a second term.

They also promised to elect Akpabio as a senator, saying that he has performed as the governor.

  • Uncommon choices in Akwa Ibom

Our national atmosphere is saturated with politics. Ordinarily as in other climes these should be exciting and interesting times. In our dear country though, politics is far from ordinary and in the true sense of the word the strain of politics played in Nigeria is an uncommon variety. It is a strain of politics that rather than produce wholesome excitement produces a mix of confusion, unpredictability, intrigue, fatigue and condensates into a palpable atmosphere of loathing, worry and fear. It is a strain of politics which leaves keen stakeholders in a state of breathlessness, not because of physical exhaustion but because of the sheer effort the brain needs to make to keep up with and make sense of the dynamics that are in constant evolution, the summersaults that are unending due to uncommon mechanical propulsion and the intrigues that are on an industrial scale.

Akwa Ibom is not only the richest state in Nigeria in terms of financial muscle, it is also the richest in terms of political drama and intrigue and the impending elections promises to also make it the most unpredictable state in Nigeria. Senator Ita Enang is an intriguing personality in his own right but also represents the contribution of Akwa Ibom politicians to Nigeria’s political drama. On the defection of the new PDP senators to APC and the refusal or inability of the Senate President to read a common letter, Senator Ita Enang a trained lawyer thundered that their  senate seats were automatically and immediately vacated on account of their defection to another party. Last week, Senator Enang announced his defection from PDP to APC! In accordance with his own interpretation and application, he will vacate his senate seat but not before May 29!

    As a proud citizen of Akwa Ibom State, I have made up my mind on which of the competing tendencies will have my support in the upcoming elections and my mind has been formed as follows;

On the gubernatorial platform are two gladiators – Udom Emmanuel (Udom) and Umana Okon Umana (Umana). Udom a banker of repute and choice of outgoing Governor Akpabio is the candidate of the PDP (as of time of writing). His public service record consists of 18 months stint as Secretary to the State Government as preparation for promotion to governor.

Umana a seasoned ‘politocrat’ has held both civil service and political appointments. These include Director of Budget, Commissioner for Finance and as Udom’s shunted predecessor as Secretary to the State Government.

Up until the end of last year and even remotely, the thought of supporting Umana never crossed my mind. I am convinced and have posited in different public and private fora that Governor Akpabio’s regime has engaged in squandermania and hence mismanagement of the state’s resources resulting in the absence of meaningful sustainable development commensurate with available resources. Umana has nursed the ambition to be governor of Akwa Ibom for sometime now and this irritated me to no end. In fact anytime I saw him together with Akpabio (who was then supporting him) my irritation increased at the audacity of the two of them thinking they could engage in a baton exchange. A baton that does not belong to them! To be honest even after he was sacked by the governor and evicted from office by Akwa Ibom’s amiable but dutiful first lady, I said good riddance!

Riddance? Not in Nigeria’s politics! The APC (where my sympathies lie) ends up producing Umana as its governorship candidate. To me Umana is like the mosquito that survived all the insecticide and my hand claps and remains in my net. What are my options?

Udom is the candidate foisted on the PDP by Governor Akpabio. Several friends who know Udom closely have sought to assure me that he is a sound professional, God fearing and that he will govern the state with prudence and decorum. I do not doubt them and in truth, Udom’s magnificence is not the issue for me. The issue for me is the democratic growth and well-being of Akwa Ibom in particular and Nigeria in general. It is trite that power resides with the people. It is when this residency is established, demonstrated and practiced that the people enjoy the dividends of democracy or good governance. This is so because if the people sleep on their right to choose who governs them and allow their sovereignty to be hijacked by any individual or cabal, the beneficiary of that process is answerable not to the people but to the individual or cabal. To put it in simpler terms, if Governor Akpabio succeeds in ‘making’ Udom the governor, it will set a precedent that access to the states resources can be utilized to rob the people of their sovereignty. This will set us as a people back a very long way and may indeed become accepted as ‘the way it is’. That is not the panacea for development or indeed societal well being. So for me it is more important to make the point that power resides with the people. Thwarting the governor’s machinations is the best way to set the state on the path of democratic governance and progress.

The question that arises from the above will be ‘so what if the people go out and vote overwhelmingly for Udom?’ My answer will be consistent with my position because if Udom wins in a free and fair election, he will be the peoples’ choice and this realization will make him answerable to the people. However the process that threw him up as the PDP candidate has already and fatally flawed his hopes or claim to any legitimacy. Democracy is a building block process and everybody knows what happens to anything with a flawed foundation! In any event that process is suggestive of the fact that his backers will use similar means to ‘make’ him governor. This strongman syndrome is another manifest problem with our democracy which must be defeated. Talking to Akwa Ibomites, there is that air of resignation that their votes have not counted in the past and may not count this time. If only for the sake of our peoples psyche, I will support the tendency that will deal a fatal blow on the strongman syndrome and consign it to the dustbin of history for our peoples good!

Many things have been said about Umana especially the fact of his complicity in the mismanagement of our resources, a complicity which cannot be wished away by his supporters. The defence of Akwa Ibom having been run as a ‘one man show’ is neither here nor there. After all the option of principled resignation exists. What is important for me is the knowledge and consistent with my postulations that the process is a determinant factor in the attitude to governance. There is a difference between the Umana that Governor Akpabio would have ‘made’ governor and the Umana that emerges as governor in spite of Governor Akpabio. Obviously Umana would have happily like Udom, benefited from that process, but that is not the point. The point is that if Umana is destined to be governor as earlier ordained by Akpabio on God’s instructions then in God’s miraculous ways, the circumstances may have been redesigned to give Akwa Ibom fresh air even from such an unlikely source!

My senatorial district is another interesting race. It is between the Almighty Governor Akpabio on the PDP platform and Inibehe Okori on the APC platform. Going by the understanding amongst the component sections and in the spirit of rotation, the senate seat, I understand is zoned to the Abak sector. Inibehe is from Abak, Governor Akpabio is not. Going by his own professed adherence to zoning philosophy and his stated reason for dumping Umana, Akpabio ought not to be in that race. But this is our uncommon politics and who cares about the gander if the goose is happy. However and happily Inibehe Okori is not running on the basis of ethnicity. A suave and highly successful businessman with impressive local and international connections, it will be a contest in the real sense of it. Again and in keeping with my earlier postulations, a defeat of the strongman syndrome in a democratic process will be beneficial to the deepening of our democracy. This attitude of the ‘big boys’ seeing the senate as their VIP relaxation home must change. Our dear Governor Akpabio will be on some serious pension come June, that should be enough without adding the senate seat to it! We need vibrancy and a new style and a new face for Akwa Ibom which Inibehe represents. Akpabio is better placed running the Akpabiosm Institute which given his deep faith and impressive knowledge of the Bible should be rechristened ‘AKPABIOSM INSTITUTE OF BIBLE AND GOVERNMENT STUDIES

Akwa Ibom ‘ll become economic hub, says PDP candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel, has promise to turn the state into an economic hub through aggressive industrialisation and agricultural revolution, if elected into office.

Addressing a large crowd at the Uyo Township Stadium, he promised to consolidate on the achievements of Governor Godswill Akpabio.

Udom identified the airport and seaport as major gateways to economic boom, pledging to facilitate the immediate completion of the Ibaka Deep Seaport project and the second phase of the Ibom International Airport.

While paying glowing tribute to Governor Akpabio for the tranformation of Akwa Ibom State, Udom said, with the deep seaport in place, there will be economic developement.

He promised to ensure job creation through a vibrant industrial atmosphere that will boost entrepreneurship and human capital development. He added that his administration will also focus on the well-being of the common man.

Emmanuel pledged to build on from the foundation laid by Akpabio, stressing that the brand new international stadium will  expand into other aspects of sports development to enable young Akwa Ibom people to create wealth through sports and entertainment.

  • 54 die awaiting pension in Akwa Ibom

No fewer than 54 retired members of staff of local government areas in Akwa Ibom State have died while waiting for their benefits to be paid, it was learnt yesterday.

The Chairman, Board of Trustees, Association for the Welfare of Retired Local Government Staff, Emmanuel Usoro,  at a news conference in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, said the pension arrears of members of staff retired in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 have not been paid due to the inadequate allocation to the Pension Board.

Since 2010, Usoro said, the Akwa Ibom State government has not remitted to the Pension Board its share of 2.5 per cent counterpart fund amounting to N1.44 billion.

He added that the failure of the government to pay its own share of 2.5 per cent aggravated the problems facing the retirees.

He said: “More that 54 of our members have died while waiting for their benefits and many more are suffering and expecting to die if immediate help does not come to them.

“The poor funding of the Local Government Pension Board has resulted in the ability of the Board to pay backlog of the arrear for 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.”

Usoro, who explained that Local Government Pension Board was receiving a monthly allocation of N60.5million representing less than 15 per cent of the gross personnel emolument of staff of the Local Government, said with the yearly increase of retirees the amount has became insufficient to cater for their needs.

  • Akwa Ibom 22’ll announce our next move shortly, says Ekpotu

Akwa Ibom 22’ll announce our next move shortly, says Ekpotu

Former Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor Patrick Ekpotu is one of the 22 governorship aspirants who are against the emergence of Udom Emmanuel as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate. In this interview with OLUKOREDE YISHAU, Ekpotu says the group’s next move will be announced shortly

The Akwa Ibom crisis remains unresolved few weeks to election. Why is it so?

It may be that to our party, which is supposed to call it off, has yet not gone full cycle; unaware perhaps that when it does, it may be too late to be resolved. Full cycle is in the realisation by all stakeholders that the story at the end of which only the party’s electoral failure in the state is assured, should be made somehow shorter. It is in the realisation that Akpabio has nothing to lose in the end but the party’s victory in the Akwa Ibom State. It is in the realisation that one cannot logically by greater than 22. And it is in the realisation that there is special danger inherent in any capacity, on either side of the party and G22, for ignoring reason. Psychology and perceptions play essential role in convincing the adversary that any impunity or indifference by him will only lead to his inevitable defeat, and so urges the maintaining of the stability that leads to success. The G22 has, for 33 days tried to compel the necessity for this success while our party, the PDP chooses to sleep and urges us by its acts of indifference to travel further. I want to say that in a rare sense of unanimity,we all in the group have found the time to answer to the Party’s call. And we are prepared for that journey. We will do it together. My prayer is that God will keep us worthy.

Many people are of the view that the G22 has lost the struggle after the party’s flag was handed to Emmanuel Udom, what is your take on this?

We may be deemed to have lost the struggle but we have not yet lost our mission – the mission to free the State from hegemonic rule that has seen it worst ever. The struggle may be tied to our Party as it is, but its realisation transcends any particular platform as a vehicle. Just as the creed may seem time honoured, the means to achieve it is itself timeless. Presentation of Party flag to Udom is not an activity prescribed by the Electoral Act or INEC Rules. It therefore does not stop him from being substituted. The alternative it is to continue with impunity that I thought was associated only with the rulership in Akwa Ibom State and perhaps lose the chance of having a candidate in the elections. We will stop at nothing in ensuring that our rights are respected.

We cannot be asked to buy Nomination Forms to participate in a process under expressly defined rules only to have the rules changed somewhere in the middle of the game. And no one thinks we have a right to complain. Not in 21st century Nigeria.

What has been the motivating factor behind the G22 ?

The motivating factor is the common robbery that brought us together, The tragic fate that befalls the State. The increasing voices of cynics out there who tell our people that they can’t win it for themselves and again ask them to go for one that will keep them on that same course and let the chips fall where they may. These have motivated us to rest on the one sentence that sums the spirit of man – No! We can’t. And so even though we are all from different political background, our mission has been one. Though we speak from different perspectives to issues, our vision has been unified. This is the moment and this is the time: to reclaim our dignity as a people and reaffirm the truth that we are one people, indivisible, corporate, bonded together and collaborative. All these are presently lost and anyone who suggests that we keep it up simply wants these challenges of yesteryears to continue to challenge and hunt our future generations and is therefore cannot have our support.

What is the mood like in your group at the moment?

We are in the highest of spirit because we know what we are doing and we know where we are headed. Remember I said that even if the struggle is lost, the mission remains un-lost. So we are in high spirit and consciously pray that our dateline cruises in so that we move to the next level. We feel bedeviled by time.

Now that the ultimatum given by your group has expired, what is your next line of action?

We have many options on the table and the time for fainthearted excuses are over. I urge you to await the actions as will be announced by the group shortly. We know how we make electoral victory for PDP even before fate had Akpabio as the governor and after it. And since he has chosen to act as an emperor and God and deliberately severed that link somewhere nearer to the apex of that network, everyone will see that each person controls the link of that network from the point of severance right to the different units. It is only possible to use it to the advantage of the platform he chooses. There will the notion of a mortal being playing God.  That journey as compelled by our party would have begun.

Akwa Ibom PDP chair: Emmanuel has united us

The presentation of the governorship flag to Akwa Ibom State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Mr Udom Emmanuel, by the party’s leadership in Lagos has been described as the unifying factor for the party.

Akwa Ibom PDP Chairman Obong Paul Ekpo spoke at the weekend in Uyo, the state capital, when he addressed party supporters at the Akwa Ibom International Airport to welcome Emmanuel and his entourage from Lagos.

Ekpo said: “The presentation of the governorship flag to Emmanuel has finally laid to rest the speculations and misinformation that had pervaded the political sphere. I am impressed with this turnout of our people to welcome us. This is a demonstration of the fact that Emmanuel is the best for Akwa Ibom. He is the face of the new Akwa Ibom…”

Akwa Ibom choir breaks Guinness World record

A Nigerian choral group in Akwa Ibom State has broken the world record for being the largest Christmas carol singers in the world.

The record, which has been officially certified by the Guinness World Records and pasted on its website, www.guinessworldrecords.com, was broken by the Godswill Akpabio Unity Choir comprising a 25,272 man-choral group.

At a concert in the Uyo Township Stadium on December 13, last year, the choral group broke the record with representatives of the Guinness World Records in attendance.

The record consigned to the history books the former record of 15,674 carol singers, which was achieved a year earlier (on December 15, 2013) by a group called CENTI in Bogota, Columbia.

The Godswill Akpabio Unity Choir sang a medley of: The First Noel, Joy to the World, O Christmas Tree, Hark the Herald the Angels Sing, Once in Royal David’s City and O Come All Ye Faithful, in an electrifying rendition for over 20 minutes.

Guinness World Records adjudicator, Liz Smith, who announced the Akwa Ibom choir’s feat at the Guinness World Record headquarters in London, United Kingdom, congratulated the choir.

She said: “It is now time to reveal the report of the official attempt to break the Guinness World Record of the largest group of carol singers. Our team of highly trained record specialists have reached a decision. The record to beat was 15,674. I can now confirm that your attempt to break the record has been successful. Congratulations on receiving a new Guinness World Records title. The title of the largest group of carol singers has been achieved by Godswill Akpabio Unity Choir. You are officially amazing.”

Breaking the news to Akwa Ibom residents, Governor Godswill Akpabio said: “This month, we broke the Guinness Book of World Records, for the largest number of carol singers ever in the world. This momentous feat was achieved when Akwa Ibom people drawn from all the nooks and crannies of the state, who came together in the spirit of love and brotherhood. I believe that if we imbibe the virtue of love and stand together in brotherhood in the New Year, we will keep setting records and the walls of division, which have been erected by some selfish politicians, would tumble down.”

  • As Akwa Ibom PDP aspirants return to court today

As Akwa Ibom PDP aspirants return to court today

Next week, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will close the window for the replacement of candidates. The 22 aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirants in Akwa Ibom State are hopeful that, as they return to the court today, victory will come their way, writes OLUKOREDE YISHAU

Udom Emmanuel, former  Secretary to Akwa Ibom State Government (SSG), passes through the fire again today. The case instituted against his emergence as the Akwa Ibom Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate by one of the 22 aggrieved governorship aspirants, Ime Effiong Ekanem, comes up today before Justice Y. Halilu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The suit has the support of all the aggrieved aspirants.

Justice Halilu mid-last month ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to recognise Emmanuel as the PDP governorship candidate for Akwa Ibom State. The former SSG thereafter got a vacation judge to lift the order.

Since the case was instituted, Governor Godswill Akpabio has tried to rein in the aggrieved, but they say his efforts are not sincere. The G-22, as the aggrieved aspirants are known, include two men who were Akpabio’s deputy, Patrick Ekpotu and Nsima Ekere. They were invited for a meeting in Uyo yesterday. But, last Friday they made it clear they would not be party to such a meeting. The aspirants noted that it was wrong for them to appear before an amorphous reconciliation committee while their complaints were still pending before a duly recognised appeal panel of PDP.

The reconciliation committee, headed by Senator Effiong Bob, in a one-page advertorial, published on Friday invited the 22 aspirants to a peace meeting in Uyo on Sunday.

The first paragraph of the invitation letter read:” The above Committee was constituted by the state Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday December 28, 2014 with the aim of meeting with all the Governorship Aspirants who were not successful in the last Governorship Primary Election held on December 8, 2014 with a view to harmoniously reconciling issues arising from the election.”

The reconciliatory meeting failed to achieve its aim as members of the group, individually and collectively refused to meet with Bob and his committee, giving various reasons among which was that Bob was a biased umpire. They also feel the wordings of the invitation letter gave the impression that the committee had already taken a position by referring to the 22 aspirants as those who were “not successful in the last governorship primary election”.

According to a member of the group, who would not want to be named, “Senator Effiong Bob is part of the problem, so, it would be inappropriate for him to chair a committee that would address the discord. He was in Rt. Hon. Okpolupm Etteh’s camp, and then jumped to Ime Albert’s camp before he finally joined forces with both the governor and his anointed.”

The aspirant added: “In fact, after the contentious primary, Senator Bob addressed several media interviews where he defended the exercise as credible free and fair. With such mindset what kind of resolution do you expect from such an individual? He goes about with the governor and Udom. He actually accompanied both of them to the meeting we had with the governor were they pleaded that we accept the outcome of the controversial and vexatious primary. Sincerely, we wouldn’t have been part of such a cosmetic meeting with a possible predetermined objective, so we individually turned him down when he called to invite us. See, we don’t have parochial agenda; our struggle for justice is solely for the overall interest and success of our dear party, PDP. And everybody who truly loves PDP should stand by us to see that the will of the people is not subverted.”

The G-22, in a statement, spelt out their case against the Bob committee.

The statement reads: “We take great exception to the contemptuous display of continuous impunity in the issue of PDP governorship primary election of December 8, 2014 in Akwa Ibom State. Our arraignment before the purported Central Reconciliation Committee negates the provisions of PDP constitution and guidelines, concerning the governorship primary election.

“It is instructive to inform all that on December 9, 2014, in accordance with paragraph 20(g and I) of the PDP Electoral Guidelines for Primary Election, we have individually filed our complaints against the flawed electoral processes of December 8, 2014 with the stipulated appeal panel, the Gubernatorial Electoral Appeal Panel, consisting of all members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and headed by the National Chairman. This we clearly did within 24 hours demanded of us by paragraph 20(h) of the guidelines.

“In the above circumstances, it is very preposterous to be summoned to appear before a panel of our traducers. It is on record that the members of the so called Central Reconciliation Committee were active participants and accessories before, during and after the illegalities surrounding the flawed primary election we have complained about. We can therefore not make ourselves available to be used to regularise a flawed process and achieve a conclusion we already know.”

Before the attempt by the Bob committee, there was another meeting in the G-22’s secretariat in Abuja which lasted till the wee hours of Saturday, December 20. The meeting, a source said, was almost deadlocked from the beginning. A shouting match, said a source at the meeting, ensued between one of the aspirants, Chief Assam Assam (SAN) and the governor. There was palpable apprehension at the meeting, according to one the aspirants who would not want to be named, as a result of the fracas between Akpabio and Assam, who was Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.

The governor pleaded with them to accept Emmanuel as the governorship candidate of the PDP, a position that was outrightly rejected by the group on the basis that “the process that threw him up was faulty, not transparent and toxic. The December 8 exercise was everything but democratic and this has resulted in several litigations which ought not to be had the process passed credibility test”. They insisted that President Goodluck Jonathan must be involved in any effort to resolve the impasse.

As a result of the impasse, uncertainty has enveloped the polity. The topic of discourse at many public places centered on the coming elections, especially the governorship election in the state. Many openly expressed their displeasure over what they regard as the “arrogance and impunity” of some highly-placed political office holders in the state, who they accused of being behind the unhealthy political climate in Akwa Ibom State few weeks to next month’s election.

The concern by many is that unless the ruling PDP puts its house in order, it would most likely be throwing away the chances to retain the governorship seat it has held for 16 years. The PDP’s prospect of losing its hold in the state becomes more worrisome to its supporters, according to followers of political developments in the state due to the obvious ground it is losing, especially after a series of events that took place shortly before, and also after the party’s primary election.

First, it was one of the front role governorship aspirants and former Secretary to the State Government, Umana Umana, who left the party to join forces with the rival All Progressive Congress (APC), where he is now a governorship candidate, in a straight contest with his former party, PDP, come February. And many believe that should PDP not resolve the discord that arose from the December 8, 2014 primary, the tide might flow in favour of the APC as not a few PDP faithful have vowed to vote against their party.

Few days ago, the media was awash with a report that the group had agreed to meet with the presidential candidate of the APC, General Muhammadu Buhari , with a view to defecting, the group however, swiftly denied the allegation, describing the insinuation as a blackmail. Though they denied planning such a meeting, they said it was an option “that would not be thrown away in a hurry”.

In a jointly signed statement released on Tuesday, December 23, last year, in Abuja, the 22 aspirants reiterated that their only request from the PDP leadership was for the party to redeem its credibility by nullifying the outcome of the December 8 exercise in the state, which they described as “ fraudulent, not transparent and a violation of the party’s rule on accreditation of delegates”.

The aspirants vowed not to be “blackmailed or intimidated into jettisoning our legitimate quest for fair play, equity and justice in a democratic setting that ought to be rooted in fundamental human rights to fair hearing.”

They went further to state “that while having meetings with any individual or interest group is within our legitimate rights, and something that would not be thrown away in a hurry, we as faithful members of the PDP remain hopeful that the party will show leadership and responsibility in ensuring that grievances of its members are always expeditiously addressed and policy of inclusiveness pursued in the overall interest of the party, essentially in an election period like this”.

To Akpabio, the process which produced Udom was transparent. He congratulated the Chairman of the Electoral Panel of PDP, Mr. Bola Ayebowale, and members of the PDP for a successful conduct of the primaries, adding that Emmanuel’s victory was assured.

The governor said more than 99 per cent of PDP faithful came out to vote, stressing that the state would do the same by giving Jonathan their full support in 2015. Akpabio added that the transparency of the election was an indication that peace thrives in the state.

Speaking after the primary, Emmanuel said the people have ushered him into the next level, thanking Akpabio and the people for coming out en-mass to support him. He lauded the PDP for the peaceful conduct of the primary.

Oyebowale also said the process was transparent, explaining that PDP believes in a level-playing ground for all aspirants.

To the aspirants, Oyebowale, Akpabio and Emmanuel can tell that to the marines. Feelers from party indicate the President and some individuals in the top echelon of the PDP leadership are showing interest in finding a way around the crisis, because whatever affects the party in the states will obviously underline the prospect of the president.

But, as the January 16 window for substitution of candidates submitted to the INEC draws to a close, it is yet to be known if the PDP will explore it. It is also not clear what the court will decide. For now, it is Emmanuel in Akwa Ibom.

Oil spill: Akwa Ibom monarch demands $100m compensation from ExxonMobil

Worried by environmental degradation occasioned by frequent oil spillages, the people of Ibeno Local Government Area, one of the major oil-bearing communities in Akwa Ibom State, have lamented over what they described as environmental hazards caused by oil exploration activities by ExxonMobil.

Ibeno, host community to the American oil-giant for decades, has been groaning over constant oil spills into their rivers, leading to destruction of aquatic lives, farmlands and fishing business.

Speaking to reporters on the matter in his domain in Ibeno, the paramount ruler, Owong Effiong Achianga, lamented that oil exploration activities of Mobil has brought untold hardship on his people and urged management of the company to live up to their expectations by cushioning the effects of oil exploration activities in the area.

The royal father, who disclosed that Mobil had been defaulting in paying correct compensations accruable to the area over oil spills and environmental degradation, explained that  “Mobil should be paying at least $100million yearly” to tackle the problem efficiently.

Besides, Achianga urged the company to boost its social responsibility profile by creating jobs and other income generating opportunities to the local residents of Ibeno, noting that such gesture would go a long way towards making them have a sense of belonging in the company.

On the activities of sea pirates and other forms of maritime criminals operating on the shores of Ibeno and its environs, the anxious monarch lamented the ordeals faced by his people, adding that their means of livelihood including fishing and marine transports were under serious threat.

He, therefore, appealed to the state and federal governments to step into the matter with a view to making the sea safe for maritime workers and oil exploration activities.

  • Akwa Ibom G22 guber aspirants reject PDP peace panel

Following the controversial outcome of the governorship primary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State, the aggrieved governorship aspirants of the party have rejected an invitation to appear before a reconciliation committee set up by the state chapter of the party.

In a statement issued on Friday, the aspirants under the aegis of Akwa Ibom State PDP Governorship Aspirants otherwise known as G-22 said the composition and constitution of the committee was illegal.

“We take great exception to the contemptuous display of continuous impunity in the issue of PDP governorship primary election of December 8, 2014 in Akwa Ibom State.

This we clearly did within 24 hours demanded of us by paragraph 20(h) of the guidelines.”

The aspirants noted that it was wrong for them to appear before an amorphous reconciliation committee while their complaints were still pending before a duly recognized appeal panel of PDP.

“In the above circumstances, it is very preposterous to be summoned to appear before a panel of our traducers. It is on record that the members of the so called Central Reconciliation Committee were active participants and accessories before, during and after the illegalities surrounding the flawed primary election we have complained about. We can therefore not make ourselves available to be used to regularize a flawed process and achieve a conclusion we already know.”
