    The former Promise Keepers winger Ubong Ekpai, currently plying his trade in the Czech First League with the Blue-whites, feels with the impressive results posted by Abdu Maikaba’s men they deserve to win the topflight diadem.

    “I love Akwa United so much and I am very happy that they are doing well,” Ekpai told Goal.

    “I monitor the progress of the club very well regardless of where I am. They didn’t start too well in the beginning but they have improved and I am sure that they will be champions this season.

    “They have a chairman, Paul Bassey who is a professional to the core, he understands the game in all ramifications and it will reflect on the team’s performance.

    “Apart from being a former player, Akwa United have what it takes to be champions this season and I am not in doubt that will make it happen. The people of Akwa Ibom State will be glad and the celebration will go a long way,” he said.

    Akwa United have turned to former AC Milan midfielder, Harmony Ikande and another player who played in the Ukrainian league, Okechukwu Gabriel and two others to help rekindle their quest to secure a continental berth at the end of the season.

    The head coach of the Promise Keepers, Abdu Maikaba told SportingLife that besides these two internationally acclaimed stars, shot-stopper, Ojo Olorunleke and Christopher Lolo are the other players along with those already in the team that they are relying upon to make more impact in the league during the second round.

    Ikande was signed by Milan in 2009 but he couldn’t break into the first team of the Rossoneri and was sent on series of loans before the end of his contract and last played for Cypriot side, Aris Limassol before his decision to return to the Nigerian league.

    Scoring goals for Akwa United has lifted Alhassan Ibrahim ‘Muazam’ to be made one of the highest earners at NPFL side Akwa United as he is now on N600,000  a month.

    ‘Muazam’ has fired nine goals thus far as Akwa United stage a spirited challenge for the NPFL championship.

    A source told SCORENigeria: “The player is now one of the top earners at Akwa United.

    “He was on N400,000 when he signed from Wikki Tourists, but after his goals he is now taking home N600,000  every month.

    “His goals have been promptly rewarded.”

    He scored thrice in the league during his half-season stint at Wikki Tourists.

    The former Nigeria U-17 and U-20 international is on a season-long loan from FC Hearts.

    Two goals hero in Akwa United’s 3-1 home win against Sunshine Stars yesterday, Ubong Friday, has expressed joy at his opening strikes of the season and has vowed to get more to help the Promise Keepers.

    Friday, who recently returned after a spell on the sideline due to injury, told SportingLife that he continued waiting patiently and was happy that his hard work has paid off handsomely.

    The striker pointed out that Sunshine made the game tight for them but that they stuck to their game plan and played for one another till the end of the game played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium Stadium, Uyo, yesterday.

    The victory lifted Akwa United to sixth on the league table with 19 points from 13 matches.

    Akwa Ibom’s state government has appointed Otuekong Essien as the new technical director of Akwa United.

    “It is a well deserved appointment. Even before his appointment he has been lending a lot of his helping hand in some technical issue most especially as regards to the recruitment of players,” Maikaba told Goal.

    “He has love for the team and we are happy to have him as our technical director. Now he will have the license to come and support the team in full because the government has now given him the opportunity to act as the technical director of the team.

    “He has been helpful, supportive to the team and, individually to the players and the technical crew and he is always with us in training, in matches. I wish him the best!”

    Essien, the deputy chief whip of the state’s House of Assembly was unveiled on Monday. And he is saddled with the task of coordinating the technical department of the Nigeria Professional Football League side.

  • Oladapo promises tough time for Akwa Utd

    Gombe United’s Austin Oladapo has promised Akwa United a tough time when the Promise Keepers travel to the Pantami Stadium ahead of the weekend’s NPFL Match Day 9 tie.

    The Desert Scorpions were trounced 3-0 by El Kanemi Warriors in their last league tie played in Maiduguri and as they prepare for their tie with Akwa United, Oladapo has predicted a difficult time for their visitors as they have fixed their sights on returning to winning ways.

    He said they had a bad day in Maiduguri but that they have started working hard to correct the mistakes they had against El Kanemi that resulted in the heavy loss and that Akwa United won’t find it easy coping with them from the beginning to the end of the contest.

    Gombe United are ninth on the log with 10 points from eight games while Akwa United are 14th on the log with nine points from eight matches too.

    This was the charge of His Excellency Governor Udom Emmanuel, Thursday at Uyo when he received an update on the preparedness of the team for the current professional league from the Hon Commissioner of youth and sports Sir Monday Uko and the club chairman Mr Paul Bassey.

    In his briefing, Mr Bassey told the governor how the team is ready to make the state proud by not only going back to Africa but ensuring that they stay there.

    “We have one of the best coaches in the land in the person of Abdu Maikaba and we have also signed some credible and tested players who can hold their own in the league.

    “We believe the league will be tough this year especially as regards the wear and tear on the road given the addition of two clubs from the far north and the number of mid week matches that have been introduced as the League Management Company is determined to end the league by July to align with the European Calendar yet we share the binding faith that with God all things are possible…..”

    The Sports loving Executive Governor in his response charged the team to be true ambassadors of the state by imbibing discipline and all other virtues expected of role models that they are

    “Akwa United is the sports flag ship of the state. It is a club that unites all of us cutting through all barriers including political and we must therefore ensure that we keep the flag flying anywhere we go to.”

    He promised to get a new bus for the team.

     “Since air travel which was such a credible option has become very unreliable,  we will do everything in our power to support you. Just go ahead and win your matches home and away.”

    Presented with the new Club jersey, the Governor promised to watch live more Akwa United matches this year.

    The state sports Commissioner Sir Monday Uko thanked the Governor for his love for sports and the emancipation of the youths in the state. He promised that everything will be done to justify the confidence and resources that have been expended to give the youths of the state a credible platform to excel up to international level. “Your Excellency we will justify the confidence that the Governor and indeed all good people of Akwa Ibom state have reposed in Akwa United and indeed all other football clubs and sports outfits in the state,” he said.

    Akwa United midfield ace, Yusuf Adio has sent a message to the fans of the Promise Keepers to forget the struggles of last season, as the team prepare to tackle the 2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) campaign.
    “We were out of sorts at some stage last season. The team was eliminated in the CAF Confederations Cup and the Federation Cup but I can tell you that we have learnt lessons from that,” Adio told Goal.
    “The team actually grew during those trying period, and that showed in the closing stages.
    “The positives gained from last season, plus the form we have showed in our preparation for the new campaign should tell everyone this is a different Akwa United. We plan to hit the ground running this time around.”
    The Uyo-based side failed to sparkle and finished in an unfashionable position at the end of the 2016 season.
    Akwa United are on the road in the week one of the 2017 NPFL season against ABS FC at the Kwara Stadium on 15 January 2017.

    Shittu Lawal has backed new club Akwa United to again win a major piece of silverware in the coming season.

    Last year, Akwa United clinched their first major honour when they won the Federation Cup.

    Leftback Lawal has now predicted the Uyo club are bound for more glory under new coach Abdu Maikaba.

    “The quality of our preparation for the new season has been convincing and seriously, we are leaving no stone unturned in pre-season,” said the exciting defender, who featured for Wikki Tourists last season as they finished third in the league.

    “We now wish to return to the summit of Nigeria football when the new season begins. We have been working daily so as to be crowned champions after the team failed to meet most expectations in the past season.

    “There are two major trophies to play for in the coming season, NPFL title and the Federation Cup, and hopefully Akwa United will compete for both because we wish to return to continental football.”

    Last season, ‘The Promise Keepers’ finished a disappointing 14th on the NPFL table.

    Ofem seals move to Akwa Utd

    Ofem Inah has completed a move to former Federation Cup winners, Akwa United, ahead of the new Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) scheduled to kick off in January.
    The right-back after negotiations with the Promise Keepers in the off-season agreed personal terms that will see him spend the new campaign on loan with the Uyo club, supersport.com has been informed.
    The agreement also comes with a further one-year option for the player to stay with Akwa United.
    Ofem played last season with Rivers United and helped the Pride of Rivers finish runners-up behind champions Enugu Rangers.
    However with the Rivers United head coach, Stanley Eguma, bringing in another right-back, Ifeanyi Nweke, from Nasarawa United for the new season in which they will compete in the CAF Champions League, the NPFL and the Federation Cup, Ofem did not get a new contract.
    The move is to return to a familiar terrain for Ofem as he played for Akwa United in his first season in the top-flight nine years ago.
    Ofem has also previously played for Abia Warriors, Sharks, Sunshine Stars and Enyimba.
