Goals from Kufre Ebong and Nnamso Edo were enough to give Akwa United a 2-1 home win against 10-man Dolphins.

Patrick Udoh’s men were looking to kick on back to winning ways at the Uyo Township Stadium, having played a draw against Abia Warriors in their last home match. But their trip to Taraba on Thursday seemed to have caught up with them, as after 22 minutes Emem Eduok poked home a Victor Alegbe pass.

Slowly though, the home side started to get back in the game, and eventually equalised late on in the first half. Ebong rifled in an effort from 12 yards out after Dolphins failed to clear their lines.

After the break though, Udoh’s side fought hard and took the lead through Nnamso Edo’s well kick spot kick which went past the goalkeeper after Chizoba Amaefule was sent-off for a second bookable offence in the penalty area.

Dolphins fought hard to get a share of the points late on, but their efforts were in vein as the Promise Keepers won in front of the passionate Uyo fans.

The Better Tomorrow Academy left full-back was an integral member of the coach Manu Garba-led side that became the most successful team in FIFA U-17 World Cup history after a 3-0 win over holders Mexico at the Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Rumours making the rounds in the Akwa Ibom State capital, Uyo suggest the 17-year-old, who is being courted by some foreign clubs, is set to pitch his tent with United while waiting for an overseas deal to materialise, but the player’s manager Akpaidem Frederick Effiong in a chat with futaa.com dismissed the rumour, labelling it as false.

“Okon is only training with Akwa United and nothing more. Any story of his signing for Akwa is false as we have not received any offer from the club.

“He is there to keep fit and most especially train with a more experienced side and players as he gears up for the challenges ahead of him.”

Akpaidem also disclosed that there have been offers for the youngster from foreign clubs which he will reveal when the time is right.

“There is interest both within and outside Nigeria but we are taking our time to decide what is best for the player as he is still in his developing stage.

“Once we have something concrete, the world will know. For now he is focused on staying fit and gaining more experience which explains his routines with the Akwa squad.”

    Tenger quits Akwa Utd

Akwa United head coach,Justin Tenger on Saturday tendered his resignation letter to the management of the side ending his one-season stint at the Uyo-based side.

The former Niger Tornadoes gaffer fought hard to secure the side top flight league football in the 2012/13 Glo Premier League ending the season campaign on the 16th position on 51 points.

The formal resignation has laid to rest days of denial and counter-denial between the management and coach whether or not the coach had been sacked.

Tenger said his one season contract with the Uyo-based side ended on Sunday, October 20 after their last game at Kwara United in Lokoja though with a clause for renewal. But he opted to end the stint with the side.

“I’ve completely disengaged myself today (Saturday) from Akwa United, the season is over for both parties and it’s done peacefully.

“I signed one season contract with the side which officially ended with our last season game at Kwara United in Lokoja though with a clause for renewal or termination and I opted to quit.

  • Wolves/Akwa Utd not a grudge game

Wolves/Akwa Utd not a grudge game

AKWA United has said their week 36 game against Warri Wolves at the Warri City Stadium is not going to be a grudge game rather a battle between two clubs with the desire to claim the maximum 3points.

Recall that the first leg meeting between both clubs in Uyo ended in mild trouble that saw Akwa United banned to the Rojeny Stadium following allegations that their fans assaulted the match officials at half time despite going 2-0 up.

According to the club’s spokesperson, Uwem Ekoh: “I hope the game does not get any unnecessary hype as we don’t have a problem with Warri Wolves.

We are brothers, so I do not anticipate any crisis when we lock horns at their ground.

“Nonetheless, its one hurdle that will be hard to cross but I am sure that with coach Justin Tenger back into the team having gone off duty to attend to pressing matters, coupled with the drills the players underwent during the week, I can beat my chest that the Promise Keepers can shock the 2013 Federation Cup runners-up in front of their fans.”

However, Ekoh says he’s confident that the team can beat the drop.

“I am very sure at the end of the season we wont be relegated. We are going to Warri to pick the three maximum points this weekend which will signal our intention of beating the drop. ” I don’t believe in impossibilities despite our position on the league, I am sure the team will pick 9points from the three games left.”

In the same vain, attacking midfielder, Nura Nakargo said there was no cause for alarm as the Promise Keepers will not be relegated to the second tier of Nigeria Football at the end of the current campaign. “Our focus is to remain in the top flight by winning the three games left to play starting from this weekend game against Warri Wolves at the Warri township Stadium. ” We have vowed to skip relegation and we shall keep our words by proving it on the pitch,” Nakargo concluded.

Akwa United are placed 19th with 44 points.
