Akwa Utd: Wolves don’t scare us

AKWA Utd say they have all it takes to upset Warri Wolves in today’s Federation Cup semi-final game at the Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi.

The spokesperson of the Uyo team said: “We are ready to tame Wolves once again today in Bauchi as we have the edge over them. If you recall, we defeated them twice in the league in Uyo and Owerri.

“The morale here in Bauchi is good as we came with our full squad.

“We know its going to be a tough one but I can assure you that we won’t slack against them because playing the final in Lagos come September is our utmost target.”

He continued: “Also, looking at our form in the championship, many will agree with me that we have been impressive. Akwa Utd can even be tagged as the new ‘giant-killers’, having eliminated two Oriental teams; Rangers and Federations Cup defending champions Heartland from the knock-out tournament.

“So, we hope to maintain our winning streak against Wolves.

“The Warri team should also be mindful that the 1-1 draw with El-Kanemi last Sunday will spur our boys to be more determined as they want to win this trophy to make the people of Akwa Ibom proud.”

Akwa United seeks redemption against El-Kanemi

Akwa United defender Hamza Onwuemenyi says they have put Wednesday’s disappointing 1-4 loss away to Bayelsa United behind them and are focused on Sunday’s game against El-Kanemi Warriors.

United lost by a wide margin despite scoring first and thereby lost an opportunity to move closer to the top half of the premiership log.

Onwuemenyi has urged his colleagues to make up for the defeat by putting El-Kanemi to the sword in Uyo, as any other outcome may jeopardise their dreams of winning of a continental ticket through the league.

“We are not happy with our loss to Bayelsa United and have to redeem our image by defeating El-Kanemi,” he told supersport.com.

“We scored first in Yenagoa and later lost concentration and we have learned our lessons.

“We need to respond immediately by getting the maximum points against El-Kanemi, as we are still hopeful of qualifying for Africa through the league.

“El-Kanemi are doing very well and we will not underrate them. However, we need the points badly and will go all out for victory.”

Onwuemenyi told supersport.com that they have not neglected their objectives in the league to focus on their eagerly awaited Federation Cup semifinal against Warri Wolves.

“We want to do well in the league and Federation Cup because we have a talented squad that can cope with the rigours of playing in both competitions.

“We went for a win in Yenagoa, but unfortunately we lost, so the battle has shifted to Uyo and El-Kanemi must fall.

“As for the Federation Cup, we look forward to beating Warri Wolves again because we are better than them,” he said.

Akwa United are 13th in the premier league with 33 points, while El-Kanemi Warriors are in fourth place with 40 points. Both teams have played 25 matches.

    Bosso: Akwa had it coming

Bayelsa United coach Ladan Bosso believes Akwa United’s early goal in midweek only inspired his side to eventually demolish them.

Mfon Udoh opened the scoring for Akwa at the Samson Siasia Stadium, but that was soon all he wrote for the men from Uyo as they went down 1-4 to Bosso’s men.

Goals from Gindo Abdoulaye and Diri Otimoti, along with a brace from Buhari Jafar, saw to it that the former Nigerian champions were victorious and left them in second place on the Premier League standings.

“Akwa United brought the trouble upon themselves by scoring first which charged my wards to pounce on them with reckless abandon,” Bosso told SuperSport.

“Actually it was a difficult game, Akwa United were stronger and more physical only that we exploited the loopholes in the middle to score our goals. Akwa United gave a good account of themselves but the goals kept coming our way. I think it’s a well deserved victory for my side.”

Akwa Utd, Warri Wolves displeased with Appeal Committee’s verdict

    •But agree for a replay

Both Akwa United and Warri Wolves have kicked against the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) Appeal Committee order to replay their botched Week 16 Glo Premier League clash held at the Uyo Township Stadium.

The Appeal Committee had during its sitting on Friday nullified the decision of the NFF’s O&D which ruled that only the second half of the match be played while the result will still stand at 2-0 in favour of the host which led at halftime before the centre referee, Henry Ogunyamodi refused to continue the game citing security concerns and the fans’ assault.

The Appeal Committee instead ruled that the game be replayed at the Dan Anyiam Stadium,Owerri at a date to be fixed by the League Management Company(LMC) while the centre referee and the match commissioner for the match who were hitherto handed bans till the end of the season have now be referred to their committees in the NFF for appropriate sanctions.

Speaking after the verdict was given, a visibly shaken Akwa United media officer, Umem Ekoh disclosed that they were not happy at all with the outcome of the Appeals Committee’s verdict insisting that they were expecting the committee to either uphold the decision of the O&D or award the full points to the Uyo side.

He said the verdict was a miscarriage of justice and that the committee was neither fair nor just in its verdict despite their plea for fair hearing.

“Akwa United are not pleased with this outcome at all. This is not the type of judgement we were expecting. We were not the ones that stopped the match and we now find it displeasing that the Appeal Committee did not uphold the decision of the O&D and is calling for an outright full game on a neutral ground. This is not fair at all,” Ekoh told SportingLife.

While making his own view known to SportingLife, the media officer of Warri Wolves Moses Etu described the decision to order a replay as terrible and not in the interest of the club.

He stated that negative precedent had been set and that the football house is trying to bend the rules it had made on the issues relating to match abandonment.

His words:” the rules are very clear on this but somewhere along the way some people are trying to bend the rules now. A precedent is being laid. It is not in our favour and we are not happy with the decision because they have succeeded in bending the rules. Seasiders were not happy with the outcome of this decision at all. In a situation like this the rules are clear. The footage of everything that happened the LMC saw it. This is a terrible decision and it is not in our favour at all.

“But as a law abiding club, we are going to abide by the decision and we are going to go to Owerri to sort it out with them. What we are craving for is good officiating. All the LMC officials should be there to watch the match and the best referee in the land should be called to handle it. The rules are very clear and since they have succeeded in bending it like this, we are going to look at the next club to fall victim and see what they will do. A precedence has been laid. They have set aside the rules of LMC and what it says on match abandonment, and they have used another rule to decide this matter.”

Etu reasoned that the Appeals Committee has been able to bypass the LMC laid down rules and that it might be difficult for it to remain sacrosanct with a decision like this.

Enugu Rangers have stated their determination to pip Akwa United to the quarter final slot of the 2013 Federation Cup when both clubs square up at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, today in a round of 16 match.

The Flying Antelopes beat Samba of Kano 2-0 while Akwa United sent Makwada of Adamawa packing during the Round of 32 games played recently.

Speaking with SportingLife ahead of the clash, the director of media and publicity of Rangers, Foster Chime, stated that the Coal City side are not noted for boasting ahead of a match but instead wait to play their games one after the other.

He said Rangers were poised to get the ticket to the next round irrespective of the antics of their opponents.

“We are people of few words. We are coming to Owerri to play Akwa United like we have always been approaching our games and we are expecting a win because we are prepared for them,” Chime said.

The Team Manager of Akwa United Aniete Ukpa said the game would be tough but warned that the Uyo side were not ready to play second fiddle in Owerri to any club including Rangers.

He said because of the adequate preparation from the players and the coaches, he was expecting a win that would take the club to the quarter final.

“We shall conquer. We have prepared very well for this and I don’t think Rangers have the clout to stop us now. I know it will be tough but Akwa United will carry the day,” Ukpa told SportingLife.

•Uyo side prepare for Katsina Ala tie at Oron

Akwa United have disclosed that caution would be their watchword when they file out against a not too familiar foes, Makwanda United in the Federation Cup Round of 32 clash at the Emmanuel Akume Atongo Stadium, Katsina Ala on Wednesday.

Both teams progressed to this stage after overcoming their challengers last month.

Speaking with SportingLife in a brief chat, Akwa United Team Manager, Aniete Ukpa said that the peculiar nature of their tie with their non league side have made it imperative for them to prepare very hard for the game since they do not know what their opponents would be presenting on Wednesday.

He confirmed that Akwa United players and officials have left their Uyo base for Oron, another location in the State for them to have training sessions together devoid of distractions from family members and friends.

“We don’t know Makwanda at all. This has made us to prepare very well for the tie. We know there won’t be any second chance hence, we have resolved to storm this match with our best legs. We are not going to be complacent at all.

“Already the players and officials have been training at Oron since Wednesday and we shall be leaving from there to Katsina Ala on Monday. We have the players and the coaches but we shall be cautious in order to beat our opponents and scale through to the next round,” Ukpa said.

Akwa United head coach, Justin Tenger has said his side will not miss the semi-final passage of this year’s Federation Cup.

The Uyo-based side will strive to fence off the challenge of Yerima Light FC in the 2013 Federation Cup Round of 64 games at the Emmanuel Atongo Stadium, Katsina-Ala today.

Tenger said he knows the Federation Cup terrain excellently well and will surely guide the side to a respectable finish at the end of the tournament.

“I’ve always played in the Federation Cup in all the teams I’ve tutored and have taken them to the semi-final stage. I’ve won the title once and lost in the final, too. Akwa United case will not be different, I’ll surely take them to the semifinals and from there we could take every other chance available to us.

“The players are fit for the encounter against Yarma Light FC. Although I know the side but I don’t know their current form.

“Of course, nobody takes chance in the Federation Cup, we’re going all out for total victory in the encounter.

“We’re conversant with the shock and surprise element in the Federation Cup, we’ll never allow ourselves to fall prey to it.

“Already some big teams have fallen by the way side, our feeder team, Akwa Starlets have bundled out premier league side, Kwara United same applies to Wikki Tourists dispatched by the Nigeria National League (NNL) side, Plateau United. So we’re determined to learn from the mistakes of these sides when we confront Yarma Light FC on Sunday,” said the former Niger Tornadoes coach to supersport.com.
