Tinubu to Alaafin: foster peace, promote cultural identity, support governance

President Bola Tinubu on Saturday charged the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade to use his stool to foster peace, promote cultural identity, and support governance.

Noting that the Alaafin is more than a King but also a symbol of Yoruba resilience, wisdom and pride, Tinubu said he has always held the Alaafin stool in high esteem recognising the role of traditional rulers in nation-building.

He expressed confidence in the wisdom, leadership, and dedication of the new monarch to further strengthen the unity and progress of Oyo Kingdom and Nigeria at large.

Tinubu gave the charge while giving a remark at the coronation of Oba Owoade as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.

Speaking through the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, the President said the historic occasion is not just a celebration for the great people of Oyo but for the entire Yoruba race and Nigeria as a whole.

He added that the Alaafin stool is a symbol of cultural pride, unity, and the enduring legacy of one of Africa’s most powerful empires.

Tinubu said: “Kabiyesi, your ascension to this revered throne comes at a critical time in our nation’s history. Nigeria is navigating complex challenges, and traditional institutions like the Alaafin’s stool remain vital in fostering peace, promoting cultural identity, and supporting governance.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has always held the Alaafin in high esteem, recognizing the role of traditional rulers in nation-building. As you assume this sacred responsibility, we are confident that your wisdom, leadership, and dedication will further strengthen the unity and progress of Oyo Kingdom and Nigeria at large.

“On this auspicious occasion, I reaffirm President Tinubu’s commitment to preserving our cultural heritage by supporting initiatives that promote our rich traditions and ensure that Nigeria’s diverse cultures remain a source of strength.

“Also noteworthy is the fact that Oyo State remains a priority in our Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in areas of power supply, road networks, and agricultural development. Our administration is focused on youth empowerment and education in recognition of the need to develop and crystallize the potentials of our youth.

“We will continue to engage our youths positively by creating opportunities in technology, entrepreneurship, and vocational training. Most importantly, the government is committed to working with traditional rulers to ensure the safety of all citizens.

“To the great people of Oyo, I urge you to rally behind your new Alaafin, support his vision, and uphold the values of peace, tolerance, and development. Let us remember the words of the late Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III: “A kingdom thrives when its people are united in purpose.””

He urged the new Alaafin to take a cue from his predecessor whom he described as fierce custodian of Yoruba traditions and worked tirelessly to revive ancient festivals such as the Sango festival, Oranyan festival, Isese Day and the Ogun festival, thus reinforcing Yoruba identity.

“For the Alaafin, you are on the threshold of history as successor to Oba Adeyemi III who was one of the most influential and longest-reigning monarchs in Yoruba history. His reign was a period of cultural renaissance, political influence, and socio-economic development for Oyo Town, Oyo State, and the Yoruba nation at large.

“He was a fierce custodian of Yoruba traditions and worked tirelessly to revive ancient festivals such as the Sango festival, Oranyan Festival, Isese Day and the Ogun Festival, thus reinforcing Yoruba identity. He strengthened ties with the diaspora, particularly in Brazil and Cuba, where Yoruba culture remains strong.

“Oba Adeyemi III played a pivotal role in preserving Oyo’s cultural heritage, laying the groundwork for its UNESCO recognition. He championed the documentation of Oyo’s history, restored ancient sites like the Alaafin’s Palace and Oranyan Staff.

“His advocacy attracted scholars and policymakers, highlighting Oyo’s global significance. Collaborating with Nigerian authorities, he pushed for UNESCO’s acknowledgment of Oyo as a cultural heritage site, emphasizing its role in the Yoruba empire and trans-Atlantic history. Though formal recognition is still pending, his efforts cemented Oyo’s place in world heritage discourse.

“May your tenure also witness unprecedented development and peace in Oyo.

“As you mount the throne of your forebears, we recognize that the Alaafin of Oyo is not just a traditional ruler but also a key figure who expectedly should serves as a bridge between traditional institutions and modern governance.

“As you ascend the throne of your forefathers, I pray that the foundation laid by your predecessors will continue to guide the kingdom’s future.

“May your reign be long, prosperous, and filled with wisdom. May you lead Oyo to greater heights and continue to be a beacon of hope for our people. And may your tenure witness peace and unprecedented development in Oyo.

Alaafin: Palace clears air on 21-day curfew in Oyo

The Chief of Staff to the Alaafin of Oyo, Mr. Rotimi Osuntola, has addressed concerns regarding the curfew imposed on Oyo town following the commencement of the 21-day traditional rites, known as Oro Ipebi.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Osuntola explained that misinterpretations arose due to certain wording in an earlier announcement.

He emphasised that the curfew is not intended to undermine any religious group but is part of the customary rites for the ascendancy of Aláyélúwà Oba Abimbola Abdul-Akeem Òwóadé I to the throne.

“The Office of the Chief of Staff to His Imperial Majesty, the Aláàfin of Oyo, has noted the sentiments expressed by some residents regarding movement restrictions during certain hours. The ongoing Orò Ipębí rites are a traditional process in respect of the new king’s enthronement,” the statement read in part.

The clarification comes amid discussions on the curfew’s impact, ensuring that the community understands its cultural significance.

“While the employment of words such as “curfew”, “arrest” and “detention” were used in earlier release that emanated from this office, they were used in the loose traditional sense of anytime Orò rites are performed in Òyó Kingdom, and their interpretations should be seen as such, and not being coercive or meant to demean or profane the ongoing Ramadan and Lenten seasons, instead, they were just meant to encourage our people to be mindful of their movements during the traditional rites.

“Therefore, the earlier release concerning curfew, arrest and detention of violators should be discountenanced.

“His Imperial Majesty himself being a practicing Muslim and a man of Iman (faith) will never toy with human rights and freedoms enshrined and guaranteed by the constitution.

“His Imperial majesty Oba Abimbola Owoade has directed that the issue of curfew be discountenanced. The Oba being a peace-loving King does not want disunity and disharmony amongst the subjects as the initial release was aimed at protecting the lives of all and sundry in Oyo town during the period of the Oro rites.

“The indigenes are advised to be careful with their movement in the areas where the Oro rites are being performed. It is customary in Oyo to ask for the restriction of movement during the Oro rites, however the office of the Chief of Staff regrets the use of the words, curfew, arrests and detention and hereby accepts responsibility because the Oba had started the rites when the release was made.

“We enjoin the good people of Oyo to go about their normal duties without fear of arrest, detention and molestation”

The Nation reports that a Yoruba Muslims group under the aegis of Yoruba Muslims for Freedom (YMF) had at the weekend addressed a press conference where they called on the Directorate of the State Security (DSS) to immediately arrest and prosecute the Alaafin of Oyo for creating what they described as, ‘State inside a state’.

At the briefing which held in Oyo, the group’s spokesman, Lateef Akinwale had condemned in the strongest terms what he called the unlawful and autocratic declaration of a curfew as imposed by the Alàáfin of Oyo, Oba Owoade

Akinwale had said, “We the people of Oyo and the defenders of fundamental freedoms, condemns in the strongest possible terms the unlawful and autocratic declaration of a curfew imposed by the Alàáfin of Oyo, One Abimbola Akeem Owoade.

“This arbitrary curfew, declared by a non-state actor stands null and void. No part of the Nigerian Constitution empowered a monarch to declare curfew anywhere in the country. Curfew is within the power of a civil government, it is not within the power of any traditional ruler. Only the President or the governor can declare a curfew.

“The Alàáfin is not a sovereign ruler of the land; he is a traditional figure who holds no legal or constitutional authority to declare such sweeping restrictions over the people. By unilaterally attempting to impose a curfew, he is creating a state within a state, an authoritarian mini-empire that operates outside of the rule of law, ignoring the basic principles of democratic governance and individual freedoms.

“This is an affront to the sovereignty of the Nigerian state, and to the fundamental rights of every citizen who resides within Oyo Township”‘.

However, while reacting to the development, a member of Alaafin’s media team, Bode Durojaiye described the media briefing as “malicious, tendencious, unfounded and a calculated attempt to inflame tension capable of causing religious disharmony”.

Durojaiye said, if not for mischief making, the Musilm community group must not be oblivious about Oyo traditional monarchy system, hence the need to properly educate and inform the group to discontinue feeding the media with misinformation.

He said It is customary in Oyo traditional monarchy system that during the period of Oro Ipebi (mandatory traditional rites) restriction of movement must be enforced, hence the imposition of the curfew.

Durojaiye stated that the curfew which was initially imposed between the hours of 8pm and 6pm, was adjusted to hours of 10pm and 4:30am on the orders of the Alaafin.

“The curfew, according to the Alaafin, needed to be adjusted to accommodate Ramadan. This includes allowing for the early morning Fajr prayer and the evening Taraweeh prayer, which are important for Muslims during this fasting month.

“So, what is unconstitutional in the declaration of curfew and why is it a blatant attempt to suppress the freedoms of the people, and a direct violation of their rights to free movement, autonomy, and liberty, when customary laws are alien to the Nigerian constitution?

“Why are traditional institutions so important to government and why are the custodians of culture and traditions?

“The arrest and detention of those who defy the restriction order was aimed strictly adherence to the curfew imposition and neither a threat for chaos in the peaceful pacesetter State.

“In fact, the good people of the serene town have been adhering to the restriction order without affectionate or ill-will, as Christians, Muslims and traditional religious faithfuls obey the order without any coercion”.

Durojaiye went further, “Alaafin Owoade is of the conviction that peace, a fundamental human aspiration, is the cornerstone of individual, communal, and global well-being.

“To the monarch, the absence of peace can lead to devastating consequences, including conflict, displacement, and human suffering. In today’s interconnected world, the importance of peace cannot be overstated.

“Peace , the Monarch stressed, is not an idealistic dream; it is a pragmatic necessity. Its benefits are undeniable, and its absence has devastating consequences. As individuals, communities, and nations, we must strive for peace, addressing the challenges and working together towards a harmonious world.

“Peaceful coexistence, Alaafin insisted, foster’s social cohesion: shared values, mutual respect, while promoting conflict resolution: dialogue, mediation, encourage diversity, inclusion, and tolerance.”

Durojaiye asserted that calling for the arrest of the Alaafin by the Muslim group is not only laughable, an overstatement, but a blatant disregard to the Islamic injunction on respect to the authorities, especially traditional rulers.

Alaafin: Palace debunks alleged threat to coronation over whereabouts of Osun monarch

The Alaafin of Oyo Palace has debunked media reports that the coronation of the monarch may be jeopardised by the unknown whereabouts of an Osun monarch.

According to the report, it was said the traditional rites of the coronation will not be complete without the reigning Apetumodu of Ipetumodu in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State presenting a new Alaafin with a sword of authority before the ascension of the throne.

The Palace through one of the media aides, Bode Durojaiye, said the story was not only aimed at fanning embers of discord and pandemonium in the town but also a calculated attempt to scuttle the coronation ceremony.

He said the report is a distortion and misrepresentation of historical facts about Oyo traditional monarchy, adding there is no history traceable to the linkage of Ipetumodu monarch in the Alaafin’s ascension to the throne, let alone the presentation of a sword of authority from the reigning Ipetumodu monarch before the coronation.

He said: “The attention of the media team to the Alaafin elect, Oba Akeem Abimbola Akanni Owoade has been drawn to a malicious report in an online medium captioned, ‘Alaafin’s coronation in jeopardy over unknown whereabouts of Osun monarch’.

“In the fabricated story, it was reported that indigenes of Ipetumodu, Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State are worried by the prolonged absence of their monarch from the country.

“It stated that they fear that his absence since 2024 could mar the coronation of the new Alaafin of Oyo. The story went further, ‘tradition demands that a new Alaafin must receive a sword of authority from the reigning Ipetumodu monarch before he can ascend the throne’.

“The wicked, false and baseless story was not only aimed at fanning embers of discord, and pandemonium in the town, but calculated attempt to scuttle the coronation ceremony.

“It was also a distortion and misrepresentation of historical facts about Oyo traditional monarchy, as there is no history traceable to the linkage of Ipetumodu monarch in the Alaafin’s ascension to the throne, let alone the presentation of a sword of authority from the reigning Ipetumodu monarch before the coronation.”

Giving the process of the traditional rite Durojaiye said: “For record purposes, the facts of history are that processes of traditional rites preparatory to the Alaafin’s coronation begins with the monarch’s visitations to residences of Baba Iyaji (Head of Royal families), Ona Isokun (a royal chief ) Ona Onimole (Alaafin’s chief herbalist) and Ona Mogba Sango at Akesan market area where the Paramount Ruler will be spiritually fortified.

“Thereafter, the Royal Father proceeded to the Palace for the main rites ( Ipebi).

“After leaving Ipebi, the Alaafin elect will go to Koso where he will receive the ancient crowns.

“There is a particular house in Ajagba area from where the Alaafin elect will receive a sword of authority, after which the coronation ceremony shall take place.

He further said: “However, misinformation is spreading false and misleading information often with intentional deception go cause harm.

“In an age where information travels rapidly through social media, news outlets, and online platforms, misinformation can easily reach and influence a vast audience, shaping opinions, and behaviours.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to disregard the online report as there is no iota of truth in it.

“Now is the time for every indigene of Oyo town to be wary of subterranean moves by the fifth columnists whose solace is to ignite anger, mistrust in relationships and retard progress and development for egoistic desires.”
