Alaafin’s coronation in jeopardy over unknown whereabouts of Osun monarch

Indigenes of Ipetumodu, Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State are worried by the prolonged absence of their monarch from the country. They fear that his absence since 2024 could mar the coronation of the new Alaafin of Oyo.

Tradition demands that a new Alaafin must receive a sword of authority from the reigning Ipetumodu monarch before he can ascend the throne. But the monarch of the ancient town, Oba Joseph Olugbenga Oloyede, is said to have been away from the community since January last year with no one certain about his whereabouts.

The situation has given rise to anxiety in both Oyo and Ipetumodu with calls on the authorities to investigate Oba Oloyede’s whereabouts.

Where is our king? Why has he not returned from his overseas trip? These are the questions on the lips of the indigenes of Ipetumodu.

Oba Oloyede, the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu in Ife North Local Government Area, Osun State and Associate Professor in a US university was said to have left the shores of Nigeria for the United States of America (USA) in January 2024 but has not returned home since then; a situation the people perceive as strange and worrisome, particularly because of his important role in the installation of the new Alaafin of Oyo and a traditional festival that requires his presence to perform some special rites.

Ipetumodu residents who spoke with our correspondent said they were disenchanted with the prolonged absence of their Oba and the unpalatable stories surrounding his whereabouts because of their socio-cultural implications for the town.

The residents urged the state government to investigate the whereabouts of Oba Oloyede with a view to compelling him to return home and carry out his traditional duties.

An indigene, Akanni Adewale, said the people of the town find it difficult to believe the stories making the rounds about an individual who bears the same name as the monarch and is said to be facing charges for complicity in a multimillion dollar fraud in the US.

He said the continued absence of Oba Oloyede has left the people of the community in a quandary as to what to believe as reasons for his absence.

He added that the installation rites of the new Alaafin of Oyo cannot be complete without the participation of Apetumodu, who, as tradition demands, is mandated to hand over a sword of authority to the new Alaafin.

Recalling the history behind the sword a new Alaafin must receive from the Oba of Ipetumodu. Akanni said: “History has it that Ipetumodu is the place of purification rites for a new Alaafin.

“It is mandatory that at the end of the purification rites, the new Alaafin will wait at Ipetumodu to receive a sword of authority normally sent from Ile Ife, marking the end of his coronation rites.

‘’It was said that this tradition had been in practice since the days of Oranmiyan, the founder of Oyo and younger sibling of Ipetumodu’s progenitor.

“’We believe that he is not the one facing the law in US for complicity in a multi-million fraud as reported in some news media.

“It might just be a coincidence that one of the accused persons in the case shares the same name as our monarch.

“However, the continuous absence of our monarch is quite disturbing, because since Oba Oloyede left Nigeria on January 14, 2024, he has not returned, and we know that unlike this time around, he doesn’t stay long outside the country.

“Mind you, no new Alaafin can be enthroned without receiving an ancient sword of authority from our monarch, the Apetumodu, who is the only Yoruba monarch traditionally mandated to pray for the new Alaafin of Oyo. Hence, Oba Oloyede’s absence could mar the completion of the succession rites for the new Alaafin of Oyo.

“We want the Osun State Government to find out his whereabouts and compel him to return home immediately in view of the consequences of his prolonged absence from the throne.

“We do not want his stay outside the country to rob Ipetumodu of its age-long relevance in the socio-cultural events in Yorubaland.’’

A community leader who pleaded anonymity explained that Oba Oloyede could not participate in the local festivals held recently in the town.

“Oba Oloyede plays pivotal role in the traditional festivals like Edi. The festival is usually held in October, and as tradition requires, our monarch must wear an ancient crown and supplicate to the gods on behalf of the people.

“No matter how important his overseas trip, he must return home to participate in the festival. Same with the Egungun festival held in July and Ipetu Day held in November 2024 where the monarch’s absence marred the festivals, albeit some persons claimed they had conversations with the monarch on the telephone.”

He added: “Now, our greatest fear is that his absence could affect the final rites of installation of the new Alaafin of Oyo since tradition requires that any new Alaafin must collect a sword of authority and prayers from the Apetumodu before his rites of installation can be complete.

“This traditional exercise is an obligation captured in our panegyrics as “omo a gbeda fun Alaafin (the one who is required to give Alaafin of Oyo a traditional sword of authority).

“The ancient palace in the town was recently pulled down at the instance of the monarch. Traditional chiefs in the cabinet of the monarch now hold meetings in a small meeting space.

“I want to urge the state government to as a matter of urgency set up a panel to investigate the whereabouts of our monarch and demand his immediate return to Nigeria to face his responsibilities as a traditional ruler.

“His return will not only douse tension but also ensure that he participates in the coronation of the new Alaafin of Oyo when he completes his seclusion rites anytime from now.

“There are two ruling houses in Ipetumodu: Fagbemokun and Aribile where Oba Oloyede belongs.”

In his remarks, a community leader, Prince Ayoola, said indigenes of the town are praying for the return of Oba Oloyede.

He said: “It is true that Oba Oloyede has not returned from his trip to the US. But he speaks regularly with some people.

“I have also heard about the viral story in social media which suggested that someone with similar name is being held by the US authorities over allegations bordering on a case of fraud.

“Members of Aribile ruling house have been praying for the safe return of our monarch.

“Both Muslim and Christian members are fervently praying that his return before too long would shame our detractors, especially those who contested against him for the throne.

“I believed this is the right time for Oba Oloyede’s return to his throne as Apetumodu, since he is the one required by the Yoruba tradition to hand over the sword of authority to the new Alaafin of Oyo during his installation.

“In fact, according to panegyrics, Apetumodu is described as ‘Ọmọ a ji gbeda fun Alaafin (one who hands over the sword to the Alaafin)’.

“Hence, we are praying fervently for his safe return before the completion of Alaafin’s coronation rites.

He said the installation committee had been broken down into sub committees for effective coordination and planning towards a smooth coronation.

Alaafin didn’t abandon traditional rites – Media team

    …describes report as misleading

The media team of the Alaafin has refuted a recent report alleging that the new monarch abandoned traditional rites midway.

Reacting to the report, a member of the team, Bode Durojaiye, described it as not only misleading but also grossly mischievous.

He noted that the headline was deliberately skewed to contradict the content of the story, which he termed unfair to the revered Alaafin throne.

Clarifying the issue, Durojaiye stated that the Alaafin, Oba Abimbola Owoade, could not have halted traditional rites that had not yet commenced—a fact that was even acknowledged in the body of the report.

He emphasized that Oba Owoade has not begun the customary rites leading to his coronation scheduled for April 4, 2025, and therefore, the claim that he abandoned them to travel to Canada is unfounded.

Durojaiye further assured that the Oyo State government is well-informed about the monarch’s movements and has been fully carried along in all related matters.

He noted that traditional rites can not be suspended or put on hold once the process commences.

Explaining the imperative of the trip, Durojaiye said the monarch’s trip is within the timeframe allowed by his coronation on April 4, 2025.

He said Oba Owoade only returned to his Canada base to officially put things in proper order in his workplaces and other engagements in abroad.

Durojaiye said “The attention of the media team to the Alaafin designate, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has been drawn to a report with the headline, “Alaafin: Owoade puts traditional rites on hold, returns to Canada.”

“This is not only misleading, but also grossly mischievous. The headline is intentionally slanted to be at variance with the body of the story, which is unfair to the Alaafin Throne.

“Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade couldn’t have put on hold the traditional rites he has not started. The Punch even confirmed this in its report: ‘Ten days after receiving the staff of office and certificate of appointment from Governor Seyi Makinde, the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has yet to begin the month-long traditional rites to pave the way for his coronation.’

“I wish to state categorically and emphatically that Oba Owoade has not started the traditional rites that will lead to his coronation on April 4, 2025. So he couldn’t have abandoned it midway for Canada.

“More so, the Oyo state government is sufficiently aware of the movement and whereabouts of the Alaafin. The state government is being adequately carried along and in agreement on this issue and others.

“Let it be known that traditional rites can’t be suspended or put on hold once the process commences. Tradition does not permit that. It MUST be completed. It cannot be shifted or broken.

“Kabiyesi’s trip is within the timeframe allowed by his coronation on April 4, 2025.

“Oba Owoade only returned to his Canada base to officially put things in proper order in his workplaces and other engagements in Canada.”

He assured the people of the ancient town among others that the monarch’s absence is not in sync with the reality on ground, urging media practitioners to apply caution while reporting matters concerning culture and tradition, especially Obaship.

“The people of ancient Oyo town, the state, Yorubaland and Nigeria should be assured that there in no disquiet about the Alaafin’s brief absence as the report would want them to believe

“Kudos must he given to the law-abiding people of the town for going about their legitimate businesses peacefully.

“We need to deliberately accord great respect to our rich culture and tradition. These are the values that standout our society distinctly from others. We should cherish these values instead of running them down in the media.

“Media practitioners are therefore advised to apply caution while reporting matters concerning our cherished culture and tradition, especially Obaship.

“All sons and daughters of Oyo, home and abroad to join hands with Oba Owoade in the Herculean task ahead. Your cooperation and contributions are needed and highly appreciated”, he added.

Refrain from defaming us on Alaafin throne Oyomesi tells Makinde

Kingmakers in Oyo have challenged Governor Seyi Makinde to present any evidence he has against them in court and refrain from defaming them

Makinde, disregarded recommendation of the Oyomesi’s nomination of Prince Lukman Gbadegesin, appointed a new Alaafin of Oyo.

In his speech at the presentation of staff of office to the new Alaafin, the Governor made claims that the Kingmakers have now described as unacceptable.

They expressed displeasure in a letter to the Governor by their legal representative, Adekunle Sobaloju SAN.

The Kingmakers include High Chief Yusuf Akínade, Bashorun of Oyo; High Chief Wakeel Akindele, Lagunna of Oyo; High Chief Hamzat Yusuf, Akinniku of Oyo; Chíef Wahab Oyetunji, warrant chief stand-in for Asipa of Oyo, and Chief Gbadebo Mufutau, warrant chief stand-in for Alapinní of Oyo.

“We recognise Your Excellency’s right to defend your actions in court, given the ongoing legal challenge to your recent decision. However, we respectfully remind Your Excellency that the court is the appropriate forum for presenting evidence and arguments.

“The Oyomesi, in their respect for the high office of the Governor of Oyo State, have refrained from joining issues with you in the public arena. It is, therefore, disheartening that Your Excellency continues to make public statements that cast aspersions on their integrity.

“We urge Your Excellency to refrain from resorting to a trial by media or the court of public opinion in a bid to confer legitimacy on recent unlawful acts of the state, under your command. If there is any evidence to support these allegations, we respectfully advise that it should be brought before the court, where it can be properly examined and addressed.

Adamant Oyo royal families counter Makinde on Owoade’s choice as Alaafin

Nine royal families from Oyo town, otherwise called ‘Atiba 9’, have declared that they would not accept Prince Akeem Owoade as the Alaafin-designate.

They faulted Governor Seyi Makinde for presenting staff of office to Owoade, following a claim by United States-based Awise Agbaye, Prof. Wande Abimbola, that Owoade was picked by Ifa as the next Alaafin of Oyo.

Prince Sina Afolabi of Adeitan Royal Family said this yesterday in a statement on behalf of the royal families, who are also laying claim to the throne

The other eight princes from Atiba royal families include Prince Remi Azeez (Tella Okitipapa), Prince Lamola Olanite (Olanite), Prince Agboin Adelabu (Adelabu), Prince Raji Adeniran (Adeniran), Prince Nureni Taiwo (Tella Agbojulogun), Prince Muftau Adejare Adesokan (Adesokan Baba Idode), Prince Adesiyan (Adesiyan) and Prince Bello Rasheed (Abidekun).

The statement alleged that the appointment of Owoade as Alaafin-designate was contrary to the custom, culture and tradition of Oyo, adding that the process was also against the rule of law.

The royal families noted that they were not against the persons of Owoade and Prince Lukman Gbadegesin, another contestant earlier selected by the Oyomesi, as they had the legitimacy to aspire for the throne, but insisted that the process that produced Owoade was not in tandem with the tradition of the ancient Oyo town.

The ‘Atiba 9’ said they were still pursuing the case they filed against the process that produced Owoade and Gbadegesin, as the two contestants to the throne, before the emergence of the former as the Alaafin-designate.

Prince Afolabi said the process that produced Owoade was against the custom and tradition of Oyo royal houses as regards the making and installation of Alaafin.

He said Governor Makinde, who had been an advocate of due process, erred, noting that what the governor did was against the highly revered Alaafin stool and his action had reduced the throne to an object of ridicule.

“It was expected of Governor Makinde, an apostle of due process, to have followed a just line of action and avoid reducing Alaafin stool or Alaafin to an Oba ‘Gbandu’ or Oba ‘Yebuyebu’ (an ordinary Oba without honour).

We don’t want him to be referred to as an Oba that was anointed in Ibadan, precisely at the Office of the Governor. We don’t want people to refer to him as an Alaafin that did not enter ‘Ipebi’.

“Alaafin of Oyo is a prominent and first-class traditional ruler in the entire Yoruba land. We, the ‘Atiba 9’, are against the process embarked on by the state government to make Omooba Owoade the Alaafin. It should be stopped and the right thing must be done in appointing a new Alaafin.

“We don’t have anything against Omooba Owoade, who was appointed as the Alaafin on Monday. He too made efforts to become the Oba. We don’t have any personal issue with Omooba Lukman Gbadegesin too.

“However, our grouse is against the process through which Owoade and Gbadegesin emerged as candidates to the Alaafin stool. What Governor Makinde has done by making Omooba Owoade the Alaafin is an attempt to ridicule the throne. We, the ‘Atiba 9’, don’t want it!

“We respect Prof Abimbola, who consulted Ifa, but if he wants to be fair to all, he should come and consult Ifa at Ojude Ogun here in Oyo,” Afolabi said.

The ‘Atiba 9’ urged the Oyomesi, under the leadership of Basorun, High Chief Yusuf Akinade, to resolve whatever disagreement they had among themselves, saying they were the only ones that could initiate the process of selecting a new Alaafin.

Alaafin: Oyo royal families reject Prince Owoade as new monarch

    …counter Makinde over Owoade’s appointment

Nine royal families from Oyo, collectively known as “The Atiba 9,” have rejected the appointment of Prince Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.

The families criticised Governor Seyi Makinde for presenting the staff of office to Owoade, following claims by U.S.-based Awise Agbaye, Prof. Wande Abimbola, that Ifa had chosen Owoade for the throne.

In a statement released on Tuesday by Prince Sina Afolabi of the Adeitan royal family, the group, which includes eight other princes from the Atiba royal lineage, argued that the selection process violated Oyo’s customs, traditions, and the rule of law.

The other signatories to the statement are Prince Remi Azeez (Tella Okitipapa), Prince Lamola Olanite (Olanite), Prince Agboin Adelabu (Adelabu), Prince Raji Adeniran (Adeniran), Prince Nureni Taiwo (Tella Agbojulogun), Prince Muftau Adejare Adesokan (Adesokan Baba Idode), Prince Adesiyan (Adesiyan), and Prince Bello Rasheed (Abidekun).

While acknowledging the legitimacy of both Owoade and Prince Lukman Gbadegesin, another contender initially chosen by the Oyomesi, to aspire to the throne, the families maintained that the process that led to Owoade’s emergence did not align with the traditions of Oyo.

The Atiba 9 further disclosed that they are pursuing a legal case challenging the process that produced both Owoade and Gbadegesin as candidates for the throne, emphasizing that their rejection of Owoade is rooted in procedural irregularities.

According to Afolabi, the process that produced Owoade was against the custom and tradition of the Oyo Royal Houses as regards the making and installation of the Alaafin.

He explained that Makinde, who had been an advocate of due process, erred, saying what the governor did was totally against the highly revered Alaafin stool and his action has reduced the throne to an object of ridicule.

“It was expected of Governor Makinde, an apostle of due process, to have followed a just line of action and avoid reducing the Alaafin stool or the Alaafin to an Oba Gbandu or Oba Yebuyebu (an ordinary oba without honour).

“When the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, was to be made the oba, he entered Ipebi and everything was done in accordance with the custom and tradition of Ife before he was proclaimed as the Oonirisa.

We don’t want him to be referred to as an oba that was anointed in Ibadan, precisely at the Office of the Governor. We don’t want people to refer to him as an Alaafin that did not enter Ipebi.

“The Alaafin of Oyo is a prominent and first-class traditional ruler in the entire Yoruba land. We, the Atiba 9, are against the process embarked upon by the state government to make Omooba Owoade the Alaafin. It should be stopped and the right thing must be done in appointing a new Alaafin.

“We don’t have anything personal against Omooba Owoade who was appointed as the Alaafin on Monday. He too made efforts to become the oba. We don’t have any personal issue with Omooba Lukman Gbadegesin too.

“However, our grouse is against the process through which Owoade and Gbadegesin emerged as candidates to the Alaafin stool. And what Governor Makinde had done by making Omooba Owoade the Alaafin is an attempt to ridicule the throne. We, the Atiba 9, don’t want it!

“We respect Professor Wande Abimbola who consulted Ifa, but if he wants to be fair to all, he should come and consult Ifa at Ojude Ogun here in Oyo,” Afolabi stated.

The Atiba 9 also charged the Oyomesi, under the leadership of Basorun, High Chief Yusuf Akinade, to amicably resolve whatever disagreement they have among themselves, noting that they are the only ones that can initiate the process of selecting a new Alaafin.

“Whatever is the grouse or disagreement between the Basorun and other members of the Oyo Mesi should be resolved. They should call themselves together and settle their crisis amicably before any process of installing a new Alaafin can be embarked upon,” the statement added.

Afolabi noted that with the current arrangement, any occupant of the Alaafin stool will lose respect from other Yoruba obas, especially those who were supposed to be taking instructions from him.

“If we should look at it critically as things stand now, some obas who are supposed to be taking instructions from the Alaafin will not be doing that; they will not respect him as they will see him as not being properly appointed. The Alaafin should not be reduced to an ordinary oba.

“These are our grouses. We are not against whoever is appointed as the Alaafin, but the process must be in accordance with our established custom, culture, tradition and the rule of law. Whoever that emerged through such a process will be acceptable to us.”

A new chapter opened in Oyo yesterday.

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, was presented with instruments of office by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

The ceremony was held at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, the state capital.

Makinde said the Alaafin’s stool is not just important to Oyo town but also to the Yoruba race.

He said he decided not to meddle in the appointment of the Alaafin because of his administration’s belief in openness and transparency.

Makinde warned those who are still bent on destabilising the traditional institution in Oyo to desist.

The governor said he will prosecute chiefs who allegedly collected money during  the selection  process, adding however, that he will only forgive them if they seek the forgiveness of the monarch.

Makinde said: “The Alaafin stool is important not just to Oyo town or Oyo State but the Yoruba race. So, under my watch, I made it clear that the stool would not be for sale. It is not a stool for us to toil with.

“I met Prince Owoade for the first time in my life yesterday. I never spoke to him until yesterday. I did not know his profile or the profile of any of the princes vying for the stool and it was deliberate, because I did not want my opinion to influence the process.

“Let me say this; when we came in 2019, we had challenges with the traditional institution in Ibadanland and it has been resolved to everybody’s satisfaction.

“When it was time for us to approve selection of Okere, some people came to me and said: ‘This is our friend’. They said one person is APC and I said it does not mean anything to me whether you are PDP or APC. Why should my decision be based on political consideration? So, I approved the selection of the Saki kingmakers.

“I always tell people not to kill themselves over politicians, because we see ourselves in the night. We go to each other’s houses. Politics, electioneering is a game. It’s only when you have been elected, then governance becomes a serious business because you will take decisions that will affect people. So, we will not play politics with governance.

“The Alaafin stool became vacant in 2022. We were moving towards election and people said, you have to approve the appointment of Alaafin, otherwise, Oyo people would not vote for you. I said the people should not vote for me but that I would do what was right and Oyo voted for me massively. Oyo will continue to support me.

“Let me also say briefly that those that are still bent on destabilising the traditional institution in Oyo, the government is not letting down. We will prosecute them. For the money they collected, they will still be prosecuted, except they go to Kabiyesi. If he forgives them, I will also forgive them.”

Hailing the monarch, Makinde prayed that his reign would bring peace and progress to Oyo town, Oyo State and the Yoruba race.

“The coronation would be in four weeks. From today, we have an Alaafin. I congratulate the Alaafin of Oyoland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade. I pray that your reign shall bring unity to Yoruba race wherever they may be around the world.

“I pray it would also bring progress and development to Oyoland, Oyo State as well as Yoruba race,” Makinde added.

Owoade promised to work for progress of Oyo town, Oyo State and Nigeria as well as development of the people.

He thanked the governor, the Oyomesi and everyone that worked for his selection and assumption of office.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters,  Demola Ojo, lauded the governor for his determination to ensure the right processes were followed.

He thanked those involved in the selection process.

At the event, among others were Deputy Governor,  Bayo Lawal; former Speaker, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu; member representing Oyo East/Oyo West, Rahman Olorunpoto; Awise Awo Agbaye, Prof Wande Abimbola and his wife, Iyanifa Ajisebo; some members of Oyomesi as well as traditional rulers in Oyo.

Top government functionaries  included the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi; Head of Service, Mrs Olubunmi Oni  and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Joel Ajagbe.
