2019: Anxiety in APC over minister’s Buhari comment

There is anxiety in the All Progressives Congress (APC) over Minister of Women Affairs Hajia Aisha Alhassan’s comment on President Muhammadu Buhari’s yet undeclared plan to run in 2019.

The minister has been under fire for saying she will not back Buhari, if he wishes to run.

To some party leaders, the remark is “totally unexpected”.

Hajia Alhassan, who ran for governor in Taraba State in 2015, defended her position at the Presidential Villa yesterday.

She said “God gives and takes position” when asked whether she expected to be fired from her position, following her declaration of support for former Vice-President Abubakar Atiku.

Besides, the minister said President Buhari declared in 2015 that he would do one term. She spoke during a visit to the former vice-president and in an interview on BBC Hausa Service.

A party leader said last night. “The remarks rattled us. It is totally unexpected. But it is her view, not a collective opinion.”

Another said the party would meet on the development.

Senator Shehu Sani (APC Kaduna Central) advised the minister to resign.

Sani said: “The difference between that woman who made the statement as a minister and others is that she was open and others are still having it in their minds.

“If she is prepared to work for the former vice-president, she can easily excuse herself from this government and concentrate on what she believes in for 2019.”

A chieftain of the APC in Bayelsa State, Preye Aganaba, said: ”She has a right to her choice but I think she is not being fair. If she wants to make such public statement as a serving minister, she should resign her appointment.”

Aganaba, who expressed confidence in the Buhari administration, however, urged the President to bring into his cabinet “capable hands” who understand the ideal of the change mantra which the party stands for.

“So, I don’t think for now that the APC has any other choice than to re-elect President Buhari, though people are free to contest; nobody is stopping them. This is APC where we usually have free and fair primaries. The last presidential primaries in Lagos, President Buhari won more than half of the votes.

“During the last APC presidential primaries, the campaign slogan for Buhari was ’12 million assured votes’ and I don’t think one single vote has left that 12 million assured votes. In fact, more have even been added.

“I am not bothered about the economy because that will be fixed. For me, I’m looking at the politics of various zones because that will determine how much we win the election. To win, we will win, but by what margin? These are my issues and then if we can also do well at National Assembly elections.

“In government wise, I think we have done well. Yes, may be not where we are supposed to be because we also did not know about what we met when we came in 2015 but we have done well. A few days ago we heard that Nigeria exited the recession. The prices of food stuff are coming down, in Abuja here where I live I get minimum of 20 hours of electricity and some days light doesn’t go off for five days and so on.

“If President Buhari runs election today, he is going to win. I don’t think the President is terminally ill and, like every other human being, people fall sick but the problem is because he is the President, is in government you begin to hear stories, but he is back. I saw him yesterday; he was looking very fresh, atleast he rested very well in Daura.”

Asked by State House reporters why she made the statement, Mrs. Alhassan said: “No, I have no comment. What will I say now? I have said all in BBC Hausa. Get someone who speaks Hausa very well to translate it to you.”

On her relationship with Buhari, she said: “How will I know? I have not seen the President but I don’t think the President is a naive person.”

Asked if she is not afraid of losing her job, she said: “God gives and God takes. That is all and I have said it all in Hausa. You know that there is an end to everything.”

On Buhari supporters attacking her on social media, Mrs. Alhassan  said: “Let the will of God be.”

  • Nothing wrong with visit to Atiku – Aisha Alhassan

Nothing wrong with visit to Atiku – Aisha Alhassan

Sen. Aisha Alhassan, Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, declared on Wednesday that those criticising her Sallah visit to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Yola, were being “mischievous”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quotes commentators on social media as alleging that Alhassan’s visit, during which she made philosophical comments on the 2019 presidential contest, was a tacit support for Abubakar’s presidential ambition.

They also alleged that it signified disloyalty to her current boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, who may still be interested in seeking a fresh mandate.

But Alhassan, in a telephone interview with NAN, said that her Sallah homage to Abubakar did not amount to  disloyalty to Buhari.

She explained that Abubakar had remained her political mentor over the years and was still a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC), adding that her loyalty to Buhari and his administration, which she serves as a minister, was “unshakable”.

The minister accused her “political detractors” of “amplifying and misinterpreting” the visit so as to smear her image because  they were afraid of her growing political strength in Taraba.

“In a nation where politicians are quick to dump the people that assisted them to get to where they are, for political expediency, I have chosen to maintain a long standing family relationship with Abubakar, as well as Buhari, who I consider as a father.

“Besides, neither Buhari nor Abubakar has officially told anyone of an interest in seeking election in 2019,” she said.
Declaring that power comes from God, she said that if she loses her job because of her visit, she would consider it as the will of God.
She urged Nigerians to support the policies and programmes of the Buhari administration because it was time for governance and not yet time for politicking.

NAN recalls that criticisms has continued to trail the minister’s pronouncements over the 2019 presidential contest during a Sallah homage to Abubakar on Sept. 4, 2017, with many viewing it as a campaign for Abubakar.

Owerri shooting: Araraume offers to foot hospital bills of victims

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ifeanyi Araraume, has promised to pay hospital bills of all five persons who sustained bullet wounds in the fracas that attended the demolition of Eke Ukwu market in Owerri by the Imo State government.

The Senator also promised to provide further treatment overseas for any of the victims, if the need arises.

Araraume , who made the pledge when he made a surprise visit the Federal Medical Centre Owerri, where the victims are being treated, also promised a full scholarship up to university level to the sister of the boy that was allegedly shot dead during the fracas, Somtochukwu.

The senator, during the visit, found that two of the victims were still in the Intensive care Unit of the hospital.

Speaking to reporters, Araraume said he was moved to tears over the plight of the victims, adding that three of them have been moved from the intensive care unit to a ward where they are still being treated.

He commended doctors and nurses at the hospital for doing their best to assist the patients even without any assurance of the payment of their bills prior to his visit.

Araraume, it was learnt, also gave some undisclosed amount of money to families of the victims to facilitate their recovery.

A statement from his media office explained that; “Araraume urged the doctors and nurses to do all that they can to ensure that the victims get the best of medical care. He also promised to take any of them who need treatment overseas to any country where such care is available.”

On his visit to the family of slain boy, the statement said the former gubernatorial candidate condoled with the family of a slain boy and who promised justice for the 10-year-old

He also awarded a scholarship to the sister of the boy, who was shown in a picture crying over the body of her brother.

According to Araraume, the Araraume Destiny Foundation will take over the burden of her education up to university.

The girl is presently still in secondary school.

“She showed bravery. We saw her picture crying over her slain brother. That picture moved me to tears. Imagine such a little girl displaying such act of bravery. I was touched”, he said in the statement.

The senator also consoled traders who lost their shops and wares by pledging 1000 shops to enable them relocate and resettle.

According to Araraume, the traders needed to urgently resettle and return to business after the disruptions adding that leaving them without shops would negatively affect their lives and those of their families.

He also urged the traders to remain calm and avoid being used to disrupt the peace in the state.

It will be recalled that as at the time Sen. Araraume visited the victims, no official of the Imo state government, had done so; not even to parents of the slain boy.

Forum drums support for Anambra APC governorship candidate

Ndigbo Unity Forum (NUF), a socio-political group says Dr Tony Nwoye, All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, is the only candidate with the pedigree to transform Anambra to a model state.

The President of the forum, Mr Augustine Chukwudum, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Saturday that Nwoye had the needed charisma, dynamism and exposure to lead Anambra to the next level.

Chikwudum, therefore, called on Anambra people to vote en mass for Nwoye for the needed transformation on the Nov. 18 governorship poll.

He expressed optimism that an APC-led administration with the support of from the Federal Government would fix all existing infrastructure and developmental lapses in the state.

“Nwoye is the only person who can continue from where the former governor Chris Ngige stopped in terms of building an enduring developmental infrastructure because since Ngige left office, the state has remained stand still.

“No solid road; no water both in the urban and rural area; no free education; hospital has been overgrown with weeds and no new jobs creation,’’ he said.

Chukwudum said that other notable areas where the state had been doing well previously had continued to retard behind.

“While agriculture, tourism and industry, where the state had been faring well in the 80s, 90s and early 20s is nothing to write home about now.

“To correct all these ills is why Ndigbo Unity Forum endorse Nwoye because he is well equipped to lead Anambra to higher level of development,’’ he said.

“I therefore call on the good people of Anambra to vote Nwoye, APC governorship candidate come Nov. 18 election.

  • Misau: Another Accidental Senator

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria continues to exude the airs of a circus. A place meant to be a hallowed shrine of democracy has been reduced into an assembly where the most ludicrous farce plays out not once but on a continual basis.
No wonder, Nigerians upon whom the lawmakers continually play their crude jokes have learnt not to take the selected representatives seriously anymore. The place crawls with accidental senators who ordinarily should be pursuing careers on the dark side of human existence.
The latest of such scam artists that dominate the lawmaking arm of government is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Isah Hamman Misau (Bauchi Central), who has decided to point an accusing finger while forgetting that his other fingers point at him.
Apparently drawing from the opacity surrounding a Senator’s monthly earnings, which Nigerians have repeatedly heard is mind boggling, Senator Misau somehow became a mathematical wiz kid who arrived at a bizarre ballpark of N10 billion as what the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris makes on a monthly basis. That translates into N120 billion monthly or almost the equivalent of the annual budget of several states.
Misau must have, as a Deputy Superintended of Police (DSP), been extorting his subordinates to expect that his fraudulent ways run through the entire system and that the IG being higher up must be earning billions. This implies that the Senator must have been the brains behind some of those notorious extortion by policemen at illegal roadblocks and checkpoints so that they can meet the target he set for the “boys”.
In a country where it is generally acknowledged that the cost of running for election is too high, perhaps Misau wants to shed some light on how he was able to pay the N3.3 million for the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination form in the 2015 elections using his earnings as a DSP. This is not factoring the tens or even hundreds of millions needed for the campaign trail.
It is logical for Misau to claim that some benevolent sponsors foot the bill for actualizing his political goal only that this would be worse than committing robberies at checkpoints. Anyone that could sponsor a character like him to the Senate can only be from the crime world where they continually have a desire to have a stranglehold over the legislature, which ensures that no meaningful legislation that would stop criminality would ever be passed. Misau would have thus proving himself to be a proxy for criminals, an accident in the National Assembly, a mistake that must be corrected.
Talking of correcting past mistakes, one must blame the police for not alerting Nigerians early enough to the accidental senator in the Red Chamber of the National Assembly. The police should have raised the red flag even before Misau’s inauguration to inform Nigerians that a police deserter was in the upper house. The failure of police to do this promptly has enabled the senator to add the crime of forgery to his resume that reads like a charge sheet.
Whichever way the matter goes, the constituents of Bauchi Central Senatorial District must be the wiser now that Misau has exposed his true intent as someone fixated on attention seeking.
He could have focused on representation of lawmaking which would have placed him in good reckoning with his people. Instead, he wanted to grandstand by making baseless accusations against men who are giving their best to make the society secured.
If the police force or the position of IGP were as lucrative as Misau tried to make Nigerians believe, one wonders why he did not stay put to attain the rank of Inspector General of Police or even Assistant Inspector General of Police so that he too can cart billions home on a monthly basis. Also, if he is truly patriotic and concerned about corruption as he now claims to be, would it not have been preferable that he stayed in the force, rise to a leadership position and make a deference as opposed to playing to the gallery.
Assuming he even somehow managed to sneak a resignation letter into the archives of the Police Service Commission with accomplices doctoring an acknowledgement letter to the same effect, the very fact that he ran away at a time when he could have remained to fight the perceived rot in the system is enough proof that he has a penchant for deserting his responsibility.
Even the faceoff he got into with the police is evidence of a man who never sticks to what he signed up for. He got the mandate to represent his constituents in the Senate yet he has abandoned that very assignment to do the bidding of the highly place criminals that put him there, since his resources could not have paid for his political activities anyway.
One must charge the police to eschew the rigmarole of dealing with these pieces of information as bits for media excitement. That would be sending the wrong signal to young officers in the Police Force who will be corrupted to walk in Misau’s way and see deserting as something that would be rewarded with a seat in the National Assembly while fraudsters will think that forgery is cool since the Police did not prosecute one of their own who is guilty of the same offence.
The police must therefore dispense with this media brickbat and properly charge Misau before a competent court since there is evidence of his forgery.
On his part, Senator Misau should do the Senate a service as an institution that Nigerians are constantly reminded of as being distinguished. Instead of replying to the media, who are not his accusers, he should dare step forward to the nearest police station to appropriately make his statement and hand himself in.
By so doing he would get his day in court when he is charged as a deserter who engaged in forgery. He would get the chance to either clear himself if found not guilty and acquitted or pay for his transgressions in prison if convicted.

    Uba debunks PDP defection

Sen. Andy Uba says he has not defected from  the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the outcome of the Anambra governorship primaries.

Uba, who is from Anambra South made this known to newsmen at his country home, on Tuesday.

He debunked  reports making the rounds that he planned to dump the APC for a new party.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Mr Joseph Itazi, the senator said that he was still a supporter of the APC, irrespective of the outcome of the party’s primaries.

“Let us put the record straight, I have no intention of leaving our great party -APC – for another party.

“I have always supported the party, so please people should stop spreading false news that I am planning to defect to another party.

“I am still a member of the APC,’’ he  said.

Uba  emerged second with 931 votes at the just-concluded APC primary election, losing to Mr Tony Nwoye.

Uba and Nwoye were members of the PDP before defecting to APC.

Economy: Buhari meets CBN Governor, Finance, Budget ministers

For about two hours Monday, President Muhammadu Buhari met with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, Finance Minister Mrs. Kemi Adeosun and her Budget & National Planning counterpart, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma.

Their discussion centered on the state of the economy, including the implementation of this year’s Appropriation Act and preparation for next year’s estimates, among others.

Buhari, who returned penultimate week from the United Kingdom (UK) after a 103-day medical vacation, expressed delight over the improving economy.

The CBN chief and the ministers took turns to brief the President, according to statement by Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media & Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina.

The statement reads: “For almost two hours, President Muhammadu Buhari, Monday, received briefing from the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, and Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, after which a delighted President declared that he was pleased with the progress being made on different fronts.”

According to the statement, the ministers and the CBN governor updated the President on the improving state of the economy, the implementation of the 2017 Budget, the preparation for the 2018 Budget, revenue strategies, combined cost reduction and debt management.

They also discussed monetary policy strategies and their economic impact.

Reminding managers of the economy that reviving the economy was one of the major planks that his All Progressives Congress (APC) party based its campaign, the President expressed gladness that things were looking up after two years in the saddle.

Buhari urged them not to rest on their oars, renewing his administration commitment to bring sucour to Nigerians across all walks of life.

  • APC backs establishment of special courts for hate speech

APC backs establishment of special courts for hate speech

The National Youth Caucus of All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday in Abuja expressed support for the establishment of special court for hate speech in the country.

The National Chairman of the group, Mr Mark Nsimbehe, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the group’s news briefing that the courts would help to guard against divisive speeches in the country.

Nsimbehe said that the group was in support of every effort targeted at unifying all ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.

“We are for peace, we are for progress and we are one Nigeria; so, we urge the Federal Government to step up and arrest those disgruntled elements and their sponsors accordingly.’’ he said.

The youth chairman urged those clamouring for restructuring to do so with caution, and advised them to channel their reasons for the call to the appropriate quarters.

He pointed out that political structures evolved over time and that Nigeria had been restructured at various times yet the agitations had not stopped.

“Let us therefore restructure our hearts and minds so that the real restructuring of the country can be meaningful.

“We also want to see a blueprint of the restructuring as it is being clamoured for us to know the essence of it, if it means creating more states or reducing the states’ revenue formula.

“We also want to know if it is about a change from the presidential to other forms of government; let them detail their position and submit same to the National Assembly.’’

Nsimbehe said that the group was in support of the government’s anti-graft war, adding that the courage and the political will the government was using to recover loots was also commendable.

He said that the group shared in the pains of Nigerians as it concerned high cost of food items.

He said that food became scarce partly due to the insurgency in the North-East as farmers abandoned their farms for fear of being attacked.

Nsimbehe, however, said that the government had done well in returning the farmers to their various locations and expressed optimism that in few months, the food problem would abate.

He reiterated the group’s loyalty and support to APC and its programmes, especially those targeted at improving the lives of the youths like N-Power and conditional cash transfer.

He also expressed support for all the issues raised by President Muhammadu Buhari in his broadcast on Monday.

The youth chairman pledged the group’s readiness to mobilise and consolidate the more than 75 million youths in the country to key into the party’s course of winning the 2019 general elections.

He decried the harassment and intimidation of APC members in Abia and Bayelsa and urged the Inspector-General of Police and other security agents to put a stop to it.

  • I’m a stickler for probity and accountability in public service – Segun Oni

I’m a stickler for probity and accountability in public service – Segun Oni

Mr Segun Oni, a former governor of Ekiti State and an All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in 2018’s governorship election, says he has always been a stickler for probity and accountability in public service.

Oni, also the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the APC, said this in a statement signed by Mr Steve Alabi, the Director, Media and Publicity, Segun Oni Campaign Organisation, (SOCO).

SOCO was reacting to critics that described Oni as being “tight-fisted’’.

Oni said, “If it is my money; I can spend it the way I like, but if it is government’s money or public fund, I cannot do that.

“I was able to achieve much because I cut down on waste and conserved money for the state during my tenure. I’m not uncharitable, no. Government in a state like Ekiti does not have the latitude to spend money recklessly.

“I believe whatever we spend must add value to the society and the people themselves. That does not mean that I have super-glue in my hand,’’ he said.

He said that as the state governor of Ekiti between 2007 and 2010, he eliminated waste from public spending.

He said that his style of governance had helped the state to record monumental infrastructure and social developments that were glaring to the people.

Oni listed them as: massive road construction, rehabilitation and upgrading of public buildings and utilities,

Others are:  massive construction of classroom blocks for public primary and secondary schools and provision of social amenities as the dividends of his fiscal policy.

The governorship aspirant assured the people of the state  that he would continue to adhere to the principles of probity and accountability  for the greater good of the state if elected  again.

“I am a firm believer in the empowerment of the generality of the people, rather than handouts to a few “, Oni said.

  • APC’s battle to restore meritocracy in Edo

APC’s battle to restore meritocracy in Edo

The logic and reason behind the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) criticism of the policies of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State are often disturbingly shallow and many times, absolutely ridiculous.

This is especially so because this same political party ruled over this country and indeed Edo State for nearly two decades and literarily left the nation and all the states where they held sway in ruins.

You only need to look at the pages of the newspapers on any day, and you are certain to see revelations of the mindless looting which was supervised by the now degenerating political entity.

Under the guidance of the PDP, an estimated N400 billion, or the equivalent of $4.6 billion in purchasing power parity (PPP), representing 39 per cent of the combined federal and state education budgets in 2016, was paid out as bribes to public officials in Nigeria annually. As shown in a new report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), revealed last week.

The National Corruption Report, which covered the period between June 2015 and May 2016 also showed that almost a third of Nigerian adults (32.3 percent) who had contact with public officials between June 2015 and May 2016 had to pay, or were requested to pay a bribe to such public officials.

This was the sort of culture which the PDP promoted both in Edo State and in other parts of the country, invariably resulting in a failed system where people had to resort to corruption to get ahead.

So terrible was the situation that adults in the public and private sectors; young people and children in Universities, Secondary and Primary Schools, were introduced to a new ‘normal’ where success, wealth and victory did not come to you based on your competence but based on how much bribe you are willing and able to pay or how many people you knew on the corridors of power.

Essentially, meritocracy was sacrificed on the altar of malpractices and corruption, leading civil servants, teachers, businessmen, students, pupils among others to abandon their quest for knowledge and capacity enhancement for the simple reason that promotion or increase was no longer secured on the basis of how good you were or how much you knew.

Such was the state of Edo when the APC wrestled it from the PDP. Unfortunately, as they say, old habits die hard, and so the new ruling party in the state has been riding tirelessly against the tide of the culture of corruption enthroned by the PDP, trying to get the people to see that merit as the only currency for success and promotion has been restored.

This same problem surfaced recently when Governor Godwin Obaseki introduced capacity enhancement testing for civil servants to identify the areas where government workers have skills gap to be able to fashion out appropriate training programmes for them.

The same PDP leaders who damaged the system which the APC is now making efforts to fix began to scream and misinform government workers that the testing being done by the current government was designed to select workers for victimization and sack.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Governor Obaseki has since dismissed the fear looming in some quarters that the ongoing assessment of senior civil servants in the state was designed to fish out incompetent workers for sack, assuring that such fears are baseless.

Obaseki who was at Imaguero College, Benin City, venue of the assessment, last Wednesday, said that the exercise was in good faith and not a competency test as being rumoured.

He explained that Edo civil servants are competent and do not require any further competency test. “Before they were employed, their competency was tested, and that is why they are working in the Civil Service. But before promotions are made in the Civil Service, senior civil servants go through assessments to fill vacant positions in the directorate cadre,”

He added that the exercise was part of the strategy to strengthen the Civil Service for effective service delivery and assured that no employee writing the examination would be sacked.

The governor disclosed that the recent examination conducted for staff members on levels 16 and 17 in the state was an eye opener as some civil servants were discovered to be very good and were appointed Permanent Secretaries.

“We are not sacking anybody, but want to strengthen the service so that it can deliver quality services to the state. The assessment is not compulsory but necessary for promotion as those who need to be promoted would have to be assessed. If you refuse, then there may be no basis for your promotion,” Obaseki said.

For teachers who kicked against the assessment, the governor said it was unfortunate as his administration did not intend to exclude teachers from the resulting promotion exercise and added that the two teachers that performed very well in the last exercise were appointed Permanent Secretaries.

“We want to give everyone the opportunity to participate, but if teachers say they don’t want to be part of the process, no one will force them, we would, however, have no basis to promote their senior colleagues,” he added.

This explanation of the issue by the governor has been completely sidestepped by mischief makers who are bent on constantly stirring a storm in a teacup, with the intention of smearing the good reputation of Governor Obaseki.

Suffice to say however that this propaganda is an effort in futility.

The Edo people who chose Obaseki as their governor did so with deep discernment and this ability to assess peoples’ character very much resides with them. They know without doubt that Obaseki in all his actions is fighting for their best interest.

Osagie is the Special Adviser to Governor Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy
