By-election: APC knocks Edo PDP for demanding sack of REC

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has said Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is calling for the removal of Edo Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) because of defeat awaiting the party in the August 16 by-election.

It said Governor Monday Okpebholo’s achievements in the past eight months had made many PDP chieftains to defect to the APC.

Edo APC urged Edo PDP Chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi and other members to brace up to accept the pain of defeat.

Edo State Chairman of APC, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, said the reality ahead of the by-election and the 2027 general election was that the people had made up their minds to vote massively for APC.

He said: “As of today, no other political party exists in the state, except the APC. Governor Okpebholo’s achievements since his assumption have attracted many PDP members with good conscience to join us in our drive to give the state all round development.

“The APC administrations at the federal and state levels have initiated lifesaving projects, and still doing more to improve the standard of living. The long abandoned roads, schools, hospitals as well as other infrastructures are receiving attention. There is also a marked improvement in security in our dear Edo State as a result of Governor Okpebholo’s re-engineering of the security architecture.

“This administration has also embarked on massive recruitment of teachers to train pupils and students in our public schools. On August 16, Edo people will troop out en masse to vote for our candidates—Joe Ikpea and Omosede Igbinedion, who we have presented for the vacant Senate and House of Representatives seats.

“On August 16, APC is determined to prove to our leader—President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCON that the 2.5million votes Edo State people promised him is possible.”

North Central youths lobby Akpabio with 100-man delegation for Sani Musa’s emergence as APC chairman

A coalition of youth groups from over 1,000 All Progressives Congress (APC) support organisations in Nigeria’s North Central zone has resolved to send a 100-man delegation to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, urging him to support Senator Mohammed Sani Musa for the position of APC National Chairman.

The decision was announced on Thursday at an emergency meeting held in Lafia, Nasarawa State, where the youth leaders discussed the political future of the North Central region and strategies to strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, Comrade Dan Okwa, Convener of the North Central APC Youth Vanguard, reaffirmed the group’s loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and said the president’s re-election bid requires the backing of a pragmatic and visionary party leadership.

“We believe that North Central must not just be represented but must be strategically positioned at the table of power,” the communiqué read. “As we look toward 2027, we need to reorganise our internal structure and support one of our most credible leaders to steer the APC forward.”

The coalition described Senator Sani Musa, who represents Niger East and chairs the Senate Committee on Finance, as a loyal party man with deep grassroots support, political foresight, and a clear grasp of the APC’s mission.

“He is a bridge between generations and has remained steadfast in his support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Okwa noted. “That’s why we’re mobilising a 100-man team to visit the Senate President this week to seek his backing.”

While acknowledging other aspirants from the region, including former Nasarawa governor Senator Tanko Al-Makura, the youth leaders argued that Sani Musa stands out as a younger, unifying figure capable of energising the party’s base and mobilising youth participation.

“Senator Al-Makura is a respected elder and party stalwart, but we believe this moment calls for a dynamic leader with fresh energy and a strategic outlook,” they stated.

The coalition also urged political elders and stakeholders in the region to persuade Sani Musa to formally declare his interest and lead the charge to consolidate the North Central’s influence within the APC and on the national stage.

According to Okwa, the delegation to Akpabio will present a detailed petition containing resolutions from the youth summit and a breakdown of the strategic role the North Central zone has played in sustaining the APC since its inception.

“From massive voter mobilisation to defending the party during difficult times, the North Central has always stood by the APC. We believe now is the time for the party to reward loyalty and capacity,” he said.

The youth coalition also vowed to intensify mobilisation across the North Central states and the FCT ahead of the APC National Convention, while reiterating that their campaign is not just about regional inclusion, but about strengthening party discipline, rebuilding trust, and preparing the APC for future victories.

“We will engage key leaders across the zones, not just in the North Central. This is about the future of the APC, and we believe Senator Sani Musa is the man to lead us into that future,” Okwa concluded.

The delegation is expected to meet with Senate President Akpabio later this week in Abuja.

Breach of palace protocols: How council chairman engaged Lagos prince in physical combat

A private visit to the palace of a Lagos monarch, the Olu of Agboyi kingdom in Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) by the delegation of the chairmanship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by the council chairman, Hon. Dele Oshinowo, ended in chaos as the council chairman and the younger brother to the monarch engaged in physical combat, reports KUNLE AKINRINADE.

The guests were waiting. The Baales (traditional rulers) were seated. The royal abode was to play host to the chairmanship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the just concluded council elections, Mrs. Tola Oyedele-Abubakar and her running mate, Yomi Ganiyu. But an unexpected drama punctured the mood at the palace of the Olu of Agboyi, Oba Monsru Abimbola Oladega (Akinmasa 1) shortly after the arrival of the APC candidate accompanied by the chairman of the Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Dele Oshinowo.

As the story goes, members of the entourage stayed at the waiting room on arrival, expecting the monarch to invite them over to his chamber upstairs as protocol demands, since it was a private visit. But moments later, the council chairman led the large entourage to see the monarch. But as they approached the staircase, he was told by the monarch’s younger brother, Prince Ibrahim Kehinde Oladega, to reduce the number of people on the entourage as the palace protocols demand for such a visit.

Oladega’s intervention led to an altercation between him and the chairman, and the situation soon degenerated into exchange of slaps and physical combat, bringing the visit to an abrupt end.

Tension was said to have risen as other members of the entourage threatened to further assault Oladega despite the monarch’s appeal for peace to reign.

Oshinowo subsequently reported the incident to the Police Area Command, Ogudu, where Oladega was invited and asked to write a statement before he was later released on bail.

A statement issued by the office of the council chairman, titled ‘setting the record straight’, described the incident as a provoked confrontation orchestrated by Prince Oladega, adding that it was not an indiscretion on his (Oshinowo’s) part.

The statement also described the visit to the palace as a formal political courtesy visit, being part of the pre-election engagements with critical stakeholders meant to introduce council candidates of the APC to traditional rulers, with Oshinowo as the head of the delegation.

The statement described the confrontation as a blatant power play by Oladega, which undermined party structure and democratic principles. It further alleged that Oladega tried to deny key members of the delegation entry to the monarch’s chamber, during which Oshinowo, who attempted to intervene, was allegedly assaulted by Oladega.

The statement reads in part: “This was not an act of bravado but an attempt to maintain decorum during an official visit.

“Kehinde Ladega has no official role, yet he continues to parade himself as a gatekeeper of the palace, harassing public officials with impunity.”

The statement explained further that the incident was not the first encounter between Oshinowo and Oladega, noting that a similar incident involving the duo had occurred during the inspection of the Agboyi Bridge, where the duo had a confrontation.

The statement also accused the palace of enabling a pattern of harassment by its failure to reprimand Ladega over his conduct.

“Ladega is a man hiding behind his brother’s throne. The public should see beyond media manipulation and personal vendetta and focus on governance outcomes.

“Mayor Oshinowo’s administration has delivered more development to Agboyi-Ketu LCDA than any previous government.”

An official statement released by the palace of the monarch however blamed Oshinowo for breaching palace protocols and for unruly behaviour during the visit.

The statement signed by the Akogun of Agboyi Kingdom, Chief E.B.O Ogunseye, described Oshinowo’s account of the incident as misleading narratives, adding that the monarch’s composure while the incident lasted was misconstrued as silence.

The palace explained that the council chairman was listed among the chairmanship candidate’s delegation to the monarch and that the demand of five member delegation to the private quarters of the monarch was breached by Oshinowo, leading to the altercation with Prince Oladega who drew the chairman’s attention to the breach in the palace traditional protocol.

The statement reads: ”The Palace of Olu Agboyi Kingdom has noted with concern the recent remarks by Prince Ibrahim Oladega and the  Executive Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Mayor Dele Oshinowo, regarding an incident at the palace.

“While we typically avoid public exchanges, the dissemination of inaccuracies compels us to present the facts for the sake of truth and communal harmony.

“It should be noted that the visit of Mrs. Tolani Abubakar Oyedele was intended to be a private one, with no more than five guests expected, and was spearheaded by Prince Oladega Ibrahim Kehinde, a task personally given to him by the chairmanship candidate of the APC.

“The incumbent chairman (Oshinowo) was not listed among the expected attendees, neither does anyone have the right to barge into the private quarters of the king except if invited by the palace guard.

“However, the palace would have made arrangements to receive the executive chairman as is customary.

“His Royal Majesty, the Olu of Agboyi Kingdom embodies wisdom and neutrality. His deliberate restraint during the altercation was a strategic effort to de-escalate tension and ensure due process, not indifference.

“Misrepresenting this dignified composure undermines the reverence owed the throne.

“In the absence of the Olu of Agboyi’s aides, Prince Ladega, as a senior royal family member and a worthy prince of the kingdom acted within his authority to uphold decorum when unannounced guests breached protocol, particularly by encroaching on the Olu’s Iyewu (private quarters).

“While the duty to safeguard the sanctity of the palace remains undisputed, His Majesty and the Chiefs unequivocally condemned the retaliation against the Executive Chairman (Oshinowo).

“The initial attack on the Prince was shameful and entirely unbefitting of a public office holder. We also denounced the subsequent exchange of slaps involving the Prince (Oladega), as it is a grave taboo to strike royalty within the palace grounds.”

The palace further condemned Oshinowo for acting out of order, saying: “We must state plainly that the Executive Chairman (Oshinowo) acted with unacceptable rudeness and conduct unbecoming of his position.

“Such actions undermine the dignity of both the palace and public office.”

The statement disclosed the existence of a footage recorded by the security camera installed in the palace, which captured the incident in its entirety, and called for a thorough investigation of the incident.

“The palace’s CCTV footage is unaltered and irrefutable. We welcome impartial scrutiny by investigative bodies and urge stakeholders to seek facts through official channels rather than resorting to speculative narratives.

“The claim of a “pattern of harassment” is baseless and insults the integrity of the Olu of Agboyi’s stool.

“Past issues involving some youths and not Prince Ibrahim Kehinde Oladega were resolved internally, and the palace remains committed to justice.

“Such allegations appear politically motivated to tarnish the institution’s reputation.”

The palace noted that while it recognized and respected the mutually beneficial relationship between it and the council chief, the traditional protocol should not be sacrificed on the altar of the relationship.

“The Palace of Olu Agboyi Kingdom acknowledges and appreciates the symbiotic relationship between the local government and the traditional institution.

“We have always supported progress and collaboration with the local government for the betterment of our dear LCDA.

“However, progress must not come at the expense of tradition. Mutual respect for cultural norms (Omo Yoruba ni wa) is non-negotiable.”

The statement added: “The Olu of Agboyi Kingdom prioritises peace and unity. We urge all parties to eschew misinformation and engage in constructive dialogue through appropriate avenues.

“The palace, as the custodian of heritage, will not entertain politicised distortions but remains open to reconciliation anchored in truth and respect.

“We state clearly that the video speaks on this matter, both in what is said and what is left unsaid. Respect is reciprocal.”

The footage of the incident obtained by our correspondent showed the moment the delegation arrived at the palace where members of the entourage initially waited at the reception.

Moments later, the delegation led by Oshinowo was seen approaching the staircase to the private quarters of the monarch.

Oladega, who was standing on the stair case, was seen talking to the chairman apparently about the large entourage, and he was meted with slaps.

In return, Oladega slapped the council chairman and the situation degenerated into physical combat and chaos.

The Chairman of Bariga Local Council and Chairman of the Conference of 57 Chairmen in Lagos State, Kolade Alabi, has hailed Lagosians and the people of Bariga for turning out massively to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on the outcome of the local government elections, Alabi said the voters’ overwhelming support for his party was a reflection of the party’s strong grassroots presence.

He said: “We’re not surprised that people came out in large numbers to support the APC.  But we must continue to intensify our sensitization efforts so that more people understand the importance of performing their civic responsibility.”

He stressed that voting remains the most powerful tool citizens have in holding governments accountable.

“The best way we can speak as a people is through our votes. If a government is not performing, vote it out. We are performing, and that’s why the people are supporting us,” he said.

Alabi, however, raised concerns about the conduct of some residents who chose to play football in the streets instead of participating in the electoral process.

“I saw it myself while monitoring the area — some people were playing football instead of voting. That’s not good enough. Government must do more to change that mindset, and moving forward, we’ll ensure such incidents don’t happen again,” he said.

The former ALGON President expressed confidence in the ability of his successor, Bukola Adedeji, to deliver even greater performance when she assumes office.

Adedeji served as Secretary to the Local Government under Alabi’s administration.

Alabi said: “She will hit the ground running from her very first day in office. She is part of us, she has the blueprint of our manifesto, and she has been fully involved in the day-to-day running of the council. This is not new to her. I am confident she will take things even further and perform better than we have.”

    •PDP takes councilor’s slot

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a sweeping victory in the just-concluded Lagos State local government elections, winning all 57 chairmanship positions across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), as well as 375 out of the 376 councillorship seats contested. The sole exception was a single councillorship seat in Yaba LCDA, won by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, stated this yesterday during a briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Yaba.

The briefing was attended by the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, Deputy Director Operations, Department of State Security (DSS), Dr. Shehu Shehu, and LASIEC commissioners.

Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile described the Saturday elections as peaceful, credible, and largely free of disruptions.

She hailed Lagosians for their maturity and peaceful conduct during the election.

“Your engagement reinforces our shared belief in the importance of local government in service delivery and grassroots development,” she said.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile also commended the role of security agencies, noting their professionalism and vigilance throughout the election period.

“No major cases of electoral violence, ballot snatching, voter intimidation, or breakdown of law and order were recorded,” she stated.

While acknowledging the overall orderliness of the election, LASIEC admitted that some polling units experienced logistical delays, such as the late arrival of personnel and voting materials. However, the commission said prompt intervention by officials and security agencies minimised the impact.

She noted that the collation of councillorship results was conducted at the ward level, while chairmanship results were collated at the Local Government centres, in accordance with the LASIEC Law 2008 (as amended).

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile stated that certificates of return would soon be presented to the newly elected officials at the commission’s headquarters.

She expressed appreciation to civil society groups, observers, traditional leaders, market associations, youths and women’s organisations, and persons living with disabilities for their active involvement.

LASIEC reaffirmed its resolve to strengthen voter’s education and stakeholders’ engagement in future elections to address voter’s apathy.

While congratulating the winners, she urged them to see their victory not merely as a cause for celebration, but as a solemn call to serve humanity at the grassroots. She also encouraged candidates who did not win to remain committed to democratic ideals and to seek redress through lawful and peaceful channels.

She said: “To the winners of this election, I congratulate you. But let me quickly remind you that this is not a call for celebration alone, but a call to service for humanity.

“To those who did not succeed at this time, I encourage you not to lose faith in the democratic process. Democracy thrives through continuous participation, continuous dialogue and perseverance. We watch all political parties, candidates and their supporters to embrace their call and channel their concerns or grievances through the appropriate legal platform.”

The ruling party noted: “Against the backdrop of his record of military service, the departed former President was an unlikely democrat but is one of the most influential contributors to the strengthening and consolidation of our democracy.
