  • Aregbesola has brought unrivalled development to Osun – Monarch

    …As governor tours Ila constituency

The Orangun of Ila, Oba Wahab Kayode Oyedotun, has commended the governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, for bringing unrivalled growth and development to Osun. The frontline monarch ‎applauded Governor Aregbesola for providing quality educational infrastructure among his administration’s other interventions in the state.

“Aregbesola’s contribution to the growth and development of Osun is unrivalled and we thank God for the manner in which he steered the ship of this state especially in the area of schools and other infrastructural development,”the monarch stated.‎

The Orangun also admonished Governor Aregbesola and the All Progressive Congress (APC) to ensure that the party’s candidate for the September 22 Governorship election emerges from a credible primary that will be seen to be transparent by all party members. The selection of the flag bearer should not be only seen as being credible, but transparent enough to majority of members.‎

“I must state here that APC remains the party to beat in the coming gubernatorial elections, but the party must be careful in the choice of candidate to be presented for elections.

“As long as they avoid imposition in the choice of candidate there won’t be problem for the party in the election because Aregbesola has done remarkably well for the coast to be clear for victory in the polls,” Orangun declared.

Earlier, Governor Aregbesola charged party members not to allow aspirants in the party to divide them saying a lot of people will be coming out to aspire for the post of governor‎.

‎He noted that the visit to the federal constituency is a wakeup call to members of the APC in the constituency, saying as the September 22 date of the election approaches, all members of the party must rise to the challenge of making the party win the Governorship election.

Aregbesola pointed out that with all the achievements of his administration, the people of the town must ensure that the good work started by him must not be left to people who will drive the state back to the dark ages of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ‎ in Osun and Nigeria.

The governor held that the APC team visited the constituency as it has been doing to other federal constituencies, urging the monarch to use the opportunity of the visit to pray for the party in the state for progress.‎

According to the governor, “‎We are here to sensitize our party members to serious party work and stimulate the citizenry at large to the need to be sensitive to the machinations and intrigues of the opposition party which had the opportunity to rule the state but failed woefully.

“We are reminding our party loyalists of the fact that these same people have ruled Osun before our emergence but the record of our achievements is there to compare and contrast with their own.

“We are by far different and much more impactful on the lives of our people as our performance on ground is incomparable ‎with any government before our emergence.‎

“We have appealed to our people to work together in unison ‎to ensure that our party remains the political party to beat in any election,” Aregbesola added.

  • Ghosts behind Melaye’s recall – APC

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in Kogi, Alhaji Haddy Ametuo, says  “some ghosts “ initiated the  recall process against Sen. Dino Melaye.

Ametuo,  who stated this in a statement issued in Lokoja on Sunday on the botched recall process,  expressed delight that the efforts had come to a premature end through the collective will of the people of Kogi West Senatorial District.

“Melaye , the only senator our party has in Kogi State,  won with 94.66 per cent  leaving the remaining 5.34 per cent to the petitioners.

“The messages are very clear; that Sen. Melaye is the most popular senator ever produced by Kogi West,” the statement said.

According to the chairman, this is a sign of what to expect in the 2019 general elections.

“No amount of financial inducement and coercion will change the will of the people of Kogi State in future elections,” he said.

The APC Chairman commended the high level of neutrality and transparency displayed by the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) and other stakeholders throughout the exercise.

“It gives us high optimism that future elections will be very free and fair. INEC therefore deserves commendations for the job well done,” he said.

Ametuo called on the petitioners and Melaye as well as his followers  to embrace peace and heed the voice of God “ because the voice of the people is the voice of God.”

He insisted that the APC still remains the most viable alternative for good governance in the state.

“I call on all members of our party to conduct themselves in a manner  that will boost the image of our great party and not things that will further cause disrepute in our party,” he said.

  • 2019: APC cannot take over Delta – Sen. Amori

Sen. Ighoyota Amori, Political Adviser to National Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), has described All Progressives Congress’ ( APC ) target to take over power in Delta in 2019 as “unrealisable dream”.

Amori told our correspondent in Abuja that APC had no structure in Delta to win any election, adding, however, that it was entitled to such ambition, “but it will remain a dream”.

He said that there was no reason why people of Delta would vote out Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) for the APC, pointing out that PDP had continually delivered democracy dividends to people of the state.

“This is a tactical time where people can say all sort of things and have a lot of false expectations. So, APC is entitled to its own dream, but how to actualise that dream is another matter.

“I know that APC’s dream targeted at Delta is just impossible. PDP is well rooted in the state and it has been so since 1999.

“The good work started by the former governor of the state, James Ibori, is being continued by the incumbent, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa.

“So, I don’t see any reason why voters in Delta will abandon PDP that is so close them to a party yet to find its feet in the state, and even at the federal level.

“The structure of APC in Delta is so weak and we are not even thinking about them as people who have the capacity to wrest power from PDP in the state.

“So, it is a non-issue; it is a dream. You know you don’t have control over your dream, you just sleep and dream.

“Taking over Delta is impossible. APC can never take over Delta from PDP,’’ he said.

Amori described Gov. Okowa as a prudent manager, who was working well with limited resources available, to develop the state.

“The governor is doing well and Deltans know that. We do not expect him to perform magic beyond the resources available to him, but one good thing about him is that he is a very prudent governor.

“He has been able to manage the resources available to the state for the benefit of the people. There is nothing today in the state that is not working,’’ he said.

Amori said that development projects in all sectors in the state were hallmark of Okowa’s administration, adding that the governor had completed many projects, including those he inherited from previous administration.

The inherited projects which the governor has completed or are ongoing, according to him, include the massive drainage in Asaba, Stephen Keshi Stadium, Central Hospital, Asaba; Asaba Airport and dualisation of major roads across the state.

“Hospitals are functioning in the state. You cannot hear of doctors or nurses in the state being on strike. The hospitals that were facing challenges before now are being revived.

“The man recently went round the local government area for town hall meeting where he asked everybody if there is anything agitating their minds and the outcome has remained positive.’’

Amori added the governor did not concentrate on projects in one senatorial district or section of the state, explaining that they were spread across the state, down to the communities.

  • Minimum wage fireworks begins Thursday with public hearing

Fireworks between government, Labour and employers of Labour in the private sector will begin in Thursday a different centres across the country on a new national minimum wage for Nigerian workers both in the public and private sector.

For the first time since 1981 when the first national minimum wage act was enacted prescribing a wage of N125, Nigerian workers ad other stakeholders will be given the opportunity at a public hearing to make their own input.

Thus, a public hearing has been organised by the tripartite committee at eight different centres across the country. The Director in charge of media in the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Samuel Olowokoore said in a statement the public hearing is organised to ensure wilder consultation and ensure stakeholders participation in the review of the National Minimum wage.

The public hearing will take place in six zonal centres of Enugu, Port-Harcourt, Ibadan, Gombe, Kaduna, Lokoja as well as the cities of Abuja and Lagos which has been designated as special centres beginning from Thursday, 26th to 27th April 2018.

The statement ask Interested members of the public who wish to present memorandum to bring copies to the various venues of the public hearing.

The committee which has Ms Amal Pepple as the Chairman, and Sen. Chris Ngige, Hon. Minister of Labour and Employment as the Deputy Chairman comprises of members drawn from the Federal and State Government, the organized labour and Private sectors Employers Association.

In its memorandum to the committee, organised Labour is asking the government and employers of Labour to up the minimum wage pf the Nigerian worker to N66,500 for the least paid Nigerian worker. In the presentation jointly authored by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, cited international provisions guiding the civil duct of minimum wage to back their stand.

Conscious of argument by a section of Nigerians in losing the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) that minimum wage should not be centrally fixed, Labour claimed that discussing and fixing minimum wage centrally “will go a long way to satisfy the ILO provision on minimum wage which stipulates that minimum wage fixing should constitute element in a policy deserved to overcome poverty and to ensure the satisfaction of the needs of all workers and their families.”

According to them, “Article 3 of the ILO Minimum Wage convention 1970 (no 131) with specific reference to developing countries, the element to be taken into consideration in determining the level of minimum wage shall, so far as possible and appropriate in relation to national practice and conditions include (a) the need of workers and their families, taking into account the genera, level of wages in the country, the cost of living, social security benefits’ and the relative living standards of other social groups; (b) economic factors, including the requirements of desirability of attaining and maintaining a high level of employment.

“No 135 of the same convention says “minimum wage rates should be adjusted from time to time to take account of changes in the living and other economic conditions. To this end, a review might be carried out of minimum wage rates in relation to the cost of living and other economic conditions either at regular intervals or whenever such a review is considered appropriate in the light of variations in the cost of living index.”

It was gathered that organised Labour has directed all state councils of both the NLC and TUC to massively mobilize their members to participate in the public hearing, saying “Each state council and pensions union will be given opportunity to present the joint Labour prepared memorandum which will be sent to each state by the secretariat shortly. The host state councils are to mobilize at least 200 workers and Complimentry press coverage.”

The joint memorandum from organised Labour which The Nation cited tried to justify the slight increase in their demand from N56,000 to N66,500. It said “to determine the appropriate level of minimum wage in the country today, four approaches have been adopted. The first approach is based on a comparative analysis of Nigeria’s minimum wage with prevailing minimum wage in a number of other African countries.

The second approach is based on an estimate of the monthly cost of providing basic need to a family of six. The third measure is based on estimates of a living wage for Nigeria (Lagos state) produced by an independent study. The fourth approach is based on adjusting the minimum wage for the underlying increase in the cost of living over time.

“Irrespective of the current economic situation, the argument can be made that the Nigerian minimum wage should not fall below the average minimum wage in Africa. The argument is usually made that because different countries have differing costs of living, a straight comparison of wages is like comparing oranges and apples. To avoid this problem, the wages need to be adjusted for difference in the cost of living. The accepted practice is tsk use Purchasing Power Parity indices to adjust the wages.”

Labour argued that “the emerging best practices globally is to base the minimum wage on the concept of living wage, rather than basic need which most times leaves the worker in poverty”, adding that “it is instructive to note that Ghana has recently adopted the framework of the living age approach in computing her minimum wage”.

It argue that independent study of the wage indicator foundation of living wage levels in Nigeria came out with a range of N58,500 as N87,90 for a picas family, stressing that “taking the mi point of this range, e representative living wage should be N73,200 per month”

In a recent interview with The Nation, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Ayuba Wabba said organised Labour considered the current realities in the country, certain variables and current inflation in the country to make an upward review of its demand.

He said that the new submission from Labour was not different from the initial submission, saying “we made a demand almost two years ago and that demand was the beginning of the process. The demand of Labour was based on the agreement we had  on the five year circle which we believe was due and also considering the level off  inflation, we made a demand of N56,000.

At the tripartite level, after the committee was constituted by Mr. President, all state governors and employers of Labour, including the private sector and organised Labour were requested to resubmit their memorandum to the committee for discussion to commence.”

He disclosed that some “states have submitted their own memorandum, the federal government have submitted their own and NECA have submitted theirs. Jointly, Labour has resubmitted their own memo. But what we did was to look at the dynamics of the times because the discussion will be evidence based. So, we undertook a study and made a submission. This is the logic and not that we have submitted a new position.

It was the same memo that we submitted, but what what we did was to look at the indices because a lot have changed between 2015 and 2018. So that cannot be regarded as a change of position because the process of arriving at a minimum wage in line with convention 121 is evidence based. Everybody submitting memo or document will have to back it up with logic and not just quote figures from the air.

“If due to inflation, there has been minor changes, we thought that should be done because we felt that is what the opportunity is meant for. That document has been submitted and not a new document. It is just that we felt that there are new Variables which we felt should be strengthened.

Every variable that is supposed to be considered for a discussion on the new minimum wage has been considered. We looked at the current realities to present a very robust position especially inflation. They are variables that are outside our control which you mu use. Clearly, what I want to inform you about is that we are committed to what we have. Yes, we have changed the variables, but the principles and the logic has not changed. Every other Organisation will do same.

“Even at the tripartite level, every memo is presented by the Organisation which will be made public during the public hearing at different location across the country and each states is expected to make their presentation.

Some states have made their presentations to us which. We felt is reasonable. For now, NECA, Labour and states have made their presentation and they are already being considered.

The public hearing will begin on the 23rd of April across the six geopolitical zones and states within each zone will converge at the venue and organised Labour in the zones will also make presentations. We have give Lagos and Abuja an additional space. We have received notices to tidy up the process of public hearing.”

  • Why looters don’t want Buhari to be re-elected in 2019 – Rivers APC

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that looters do not want President Muhammadu Buhari to be re-elected in 2019, in order to protect their loot.

It also described the brouhaha generated by a cross-section of Nigerians on the resolve of President Buhari to seek a second term next year as unnecessary and unwarranted, stressing that the President is constitutionally empowered to seek re-election, if he so desires.

Rivers APC stated these Monday in Port Harcourt through the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media/Public Affairs Consultant to its state chairman, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze.

It noted that it was fully aware of the dangers inherent in the propaganda and wicked rumours being peddled by economic saboteurs and persons who looted with impunity, in order to ensure that the re-election of President Buhari became a bit difficult, but maintained that no matter their level of propaganda, the President had performed well to guarantee his re-election.

Rivers APC said: “The party will not be deterred by the antecedents of the enemies of Nigeria. We wish to reassure Nigerians that the people who ruined the country’s economy and are attempting to frustrate the re-election of the African icon of anti-corruption struggle (President Buhari) will surely not succeed.

“The looters are fully aware of what the re-election of President Buhari entails, as it will constitute a challenge to their keeping and securing their loot, but we will not allow them to come back to continue their looting spree from where they stopped in 2015, no matter the odds.

“APC-led Federal Government, under President Buhari, has proved within less than three years that the party has the best interest of Nigerians, especially Niger Deltans, through the various intervention projects and programmes being embarked upon. President Buhari will surely be supported for his second term bid.

“Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, a son of the Niger Delta region, in his six years as the President of Nigeria, acknowledged that he failed the people of Niger Delta by not embarking on any meaningful project in the region, besides imposing Nyesom Wike as the Governor of Rivers State, to promote insecurity in the state and other parts of the Niger Delta.”

The main opposition party in Rivers (APC) also urged the people of Niger Delta to massively vote for President Buhari in 2019 and not to repeat the blunder of the 2015, where they mostly mistakenly supported their son (Jonathan), whom APC said failed the region and Nigeria abysmally.
