Let’s restructure before 2019 elections, says Dickson

The Bayelsa State Governor, Henry Seriake Dickson has called on the Federal Government and other stakeholders to ensure that the country is restructured before the 2019 general elections.

Dickson said restructuring and other recommendations contained in the report released during the week by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) should be treated as a matter of urgent national importance.

The governor charged the ruling party to convince the Nigerian people of its sincerity fast tracking work on the report and ensuring that implementation takes off before the general elections.

He however, called for a multi-party committee to be set up for the purpose of studying the report, with the view to engendering popular participation and fine tuning it to reflect a broader view. This, he said, must be done before a final submission to the National Assembly.

Commending the leadership of the APC for coming up with the report, the governor said the recommendations contained in the document had further strengthened the agitations for true federalism and resource control in the Niger Delta.

Urging the Federal Government to be sincere in the implementation of the recommendations, Dickson also enjoined other stakeholders to shed primordial considerations for the overriding interests of the country.

He expressed optimism that restructuring Nigeria would go a long way in calming frayed nerves and violent agitations and would also strengthen the unity of the country.

Among others, the APC committee report had recommended state ownership of onshore mineral resources including oil and state control of the police, prisons etc.

According to Dickson said had emanated from “unexpected quarters”, having been produced by a committee headed by Governor Nasir el Rufai of Kaduna State. El Rufai had been one of the strident voices opposed to restructuring of the country.

The Governor said the committee’s report addressed some fundamental issues that have been bothering the minds of patriotic Nigerians.

Dickson said, “This development came from an unexpected quarters in a matter that is dear to us; the subject matter of restructuring to address the inequalities in our country.

Yesterday, Governor El Rufai, who chaired the APC committee submitted the report; While it is true that we are dealing with a proposal, this is coming from an unexpected quarters, and in the light of the opposition to structuring from some leaders, I thought that what the APC did was unexpected.

“Let me start by commending the committee and the leadership of that party for making what I will call the most fundamental proposal dealing with the issue of restructuring.

“This is very refreshing, and for me, when I see what is right, I commend it; when I see what is in the best interest of our country, I commend it because my politics is driven by conviction and not by convenience.

“With the kind of recommendations that they have made, I thought I should appreciate their patriotism and commitment to building an equitable and prosperous Nigeria”.

He advised the the job of mobilising national consensus on the report should start in earnest, with active involvement of the National Assembly.

“All of us need to mobilise national consensus to engage the National Assembly. So that we can drive all these issues before the next election. That is the test of sincerity”.

On his part, the Governor said he would intensify consultations across party lines to work towards the actualisation of the desired implementation of the report.

On the possibility or otherwise of meeting up with the 2019 general elections, Dickson insisted that it would not be too late to implement the report before the polls.

According to him, this is possible because the APC controls majority in the National and state assemblies and that given genuine commitment on the part of everyone, there is hope for timely implementation.

  • PDP will save Nigeria from collapse, says Secondus

PDP will save Nigeria from collapse, says Secondus

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) will save the nation from collapse under the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC ), the national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus has said.

He therefore called on members and stakeholders in the party to brace up and work together, stressing that they should go back to their various constituencies to rev the party at the grassroots.

Secondus spoke in Abuja on Thursday during a meeting he held with the league of former ministers that served under the various PDP administrations since 1999.

Addressing the ex ministers, Secondus said, “Our nation is in a situation where PDP must save this nation from total collapse. The government of APC has become lame duck after the former President Olusegun Obasanjo has released a political tsunami and verdict on the government.

“We shall be engaging most of you even at emergency level. As we move, it will be so dynamic in nature. Feel free, this party belongs to all of us.

“We have opened the party up, no one single person owns this party. No one single individual can direct, it must be collective leadership. That is what is going to give us victory.

“Very soon, we shall roll out our programme; we are going to embark on online membership drive and it is going to be aggressive.

“We also want to assure you that members of the NWC are not ready to seat at Wadata, in the confines of air-conditioner.

“We want to role out our suites and move to the states and the local government and we will get to the wards and, if possible the units, to seek for membership. So you will join us in your states”.

The party chair described the former ministers as‎ men and women of integrity who have worked for the nation, assuring them that the party’s new National Working Committee (NWC) was ready to work closely with them.

Continuing, Secondus said, “We want to assure you to have confidence in the leadership of the party and we are ready to interact at any level.

“And those of you who are interested in vying for one office or the other, we want to assure you that our doors are very open.

“The best way to go from where we find ourselves today is to make sure that we conduct very transparent elections, be it the congresses or the primaries.

“I want to assure you that the old system of imposition or any other thing that will go contrary to our constitution will be far off from the NWC members. We will not go that way again”.

The party chairman said the recent letter by former President Olusegun Obasanjo indicting the Buhari administration has confirmed that the APC is indeed running a lame duck government.

Responding, the chairman of the ex Ministers Forum, Kabiru Turaki, assured the party leadership of the continued support from the ex ministers, saying they would do everything possible to ensure the victory of the PDP at the 2019 general elections.

In a related development, the chairman of the Reconciliation Committee of the PDP, Governor Seriake Dicson of Bayelsa State, met with aggrieved aspirants in the party’s December 9 national convention.

Dickson at a prolonged meeting with the aspirants, Dickson called for understanding and willingness on the aggrieved aspirants and party members as well to allow the committee resolve their grievances in an amicable manner.

“Beyond the complaints, we want to listen to solutions; we need to move forward”, Dickson said, adding that the aggrieved members should resist the temptation of defecting to other parties.

Re: The Way Out: A Clarion Call For Coalition For Nigeria Movement, By Former President Olusegun Obasanjo

The All Progressives Congress (APC) notes the statement credited to former President Olusegun Obasanjo which has been widely-reported in the media and titled: “The Way out: a clarion call for coalition for Nigeria movement”.

While we do not agree with everything the former president said, especially on his assessment of the government and our party, we note the sundry issues raised by the former president, and we assume these were made in good faith.

As a father of the nation, we understand that the former president would feel obliged to intervene if certain things are not being done or are not being done in a particular way.

However, we believe that such interventions should be for the sole purpose of improving the system and encouraging the relevant institutions to work harder in improving certain situations.

It is for this reason that we disagree with the former president in what appears like a wholesale dismissal of the entire political system in the country.

We acknowledge our challenges as a new political party, even as we believe that APC remains the best option at this time for all Nigerians who are genuinely committed to the progress and development of the country.

We also note that there are about 72 other registered political parties in the country and the people reserve the right to support any of these.

Our democracy itself is young and hence all the parties face sundry challenges, but we have made progress since 1999, with President Obasanjo himself being a major contributor to our progress as a multi-party democracy.

It is for this reason that we believe the respected former president should not give the impression that none of the political parties in the country is good enough for Nigerians and the only solution to the current challenges that we face is a completely new arrangement.

The task of building a political party is not done overnight. Even the oldest of our political parties is still very young in comparison with advanced democracies.

Our democracy therefore stands a better chance of becoming really strong if we allow the parties to find their identities, even if in the process they make mistakes and appear to be “wobbling”.

No political party arrives fully formed. APC call on all our supporters across the country to remain strong and steadfast. These are challenging times.

But we cannot afford to react to public criticism with any form of emotionalism. We are the ruling party. We must take responsibility. Take valuable lessons on board and continue to improve.

Regardless of the current challenges, we are confident that brighter future is assured for our party and our country.

APC says it remains best option for Nigerians in spite of OBJ´s criticism

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that it remains the best option for Nigerians who are genuinely committed to the country’´s progress and development.

Mallam Bolaji Abudullahi, the party´’s National Publicity Secretary made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

The statement was in reaction to a letter credited to former President Olusegun Obasonjo titled: ´´ The Way out: a clarion call for coalition for Nigeria movement´´.

The former president had in the letter, alleged that the APC-led federal government had failed to live up to the expectations of Nigerians and had advised President Muhammadu Buhari not to re-contest the presidency in 2019.

´´”We acknowledge our challenges as a new political party, even as we believe that APC remains the best option at this time for all Nigerians who are genuinely committed to the country´’s progress and development.

´´”While we do not agree with everything the former president said, especially on his assessment of the government and our party we note the sundry issues raised by the former President, and we assume these were made in good faith,´´the APC spokesman said.

He added that as a father of the nation, the APC understood that the former president would feel obliged to intervene if certain things were not being done or are not being done in a particular way.

Abudullahi, however, said that the APC believed that such interventions should be for the sole purpose of improving the system.

He added that such interventions should also be for encouraging the relevant institutions to work harder in improving certain situations in the interest of all.

Abudullahi stressed that it was for this reason that the party disagreed with the former president “in what appears like a wholesale dismissal of the entire political system in the country´´”.

He noted that there were about 72 other registered political parties in the country and the people reserve the right to support any of them.

´´”Our democracy itself is young hence all the parties face sundry challenges, but we have made progress since 1999, with President Obasanjo himself being a major contributor to our progress as a multi-party democracy.

´´”It is for this reason that we believe the respected former president should not give the impression that none of the political parties in the country is good enough for Nigerians,´´” he said.

The APC spokesman frowned at the suggestion by the former president that the only solution to the country´s current challenges was a completely new arrangement.

He maintained that the task of building a political party was not done overnight, adding that even the oldest political parties in Nigeria, were still very young in comparison with those in advanced democracies.

He stressed that Nigeria´’s democracy, therefore, had a better chance of becoming really strong if political parties were allowed to find their identities.

This, he said, should be allowed even if in the process they made mistakes and appear to be “wobbling”, adding that no political party arrives fully formed.

He called on APC supporters across the country to remain strong and steadfast, saying that these were challenging times.

´´”We cannot afford to react to public criticism with any form of emotionalism, we are the ruling party, we must take responsibility.

´´”Take valuable lessons on board and continue to improve regardless of the current challenges, we are confident that brighter future is assured for our party and our country,´´” he stressed. (NAN)

  • We did not procure S/Court judgment, PDP replies Obasanjo

We did not procure S/Court judgment, PDP replies Obasanjo

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) has denied procuring judgment of the Supreme Court in the string of litigations that trailed the victory of many of its governors in the 2015 elections.

In a statement on Wednesday by PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said it represents the true coalition of Nigerians from across the country.

It added that its experience in governance and successful rebound from challenges has provided it an edge over every other existing or intended political platforms in the country.

In his recent letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, former President Olusegun Obasanjo had accused a certain PDP governor in the South-South of seeking to take control of the opposition party, simply because he procured the judgment of the apex court in respect of the cases involving a number of PDP governors.

“The PDP did not procure judgment from the Supreme Court contrary to the unsubstantiated claims made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his letter advising President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re-election in 2019.

“Obasanjo’s claim on procurement of judgement amounts to an ill-intended attempt to impugn on the integrity of the Supreme Court, particularly when such a claim is false and not predicated on any empirical proof.

“The party said that the ruling of the Supreme Court, which ended the protracted internal feud within its fold, rather than detract, reinforced the confidence of Nigerians in the PDP as the platform that truly embodies the resilience of a genuine democratic process in the face of daunting challenges.

“Even the worst critics of PDP concede that the judgment of the Supreme Court, was unprejudiced, uninfluenced and determined completely on merit, for which it was applauded in Nigeria and across the world.

“Also, the conduct of our December 2017 elective national convention in a transparent, free and fair manner and where nobody was ‘kingmaker,’ denotes the democratic credential of the repositioned PDP to deliver credible primaries that would yield a presidential candidate Nigerians desire”.

The PDP said there is an extensive dissimilarity between it and the All Progressives Congress ( APC ). The party said while it remains nationally populist and development-driven, “the APC by orientation and composure is arrogant, inept and anti-people, hence the nationwide detestation against it”, the statement said.

The opposition party said it’s not like the APC, where a very few individuals from within a circle control the instrument of power and governance.

It claimed to be an egalitarian platform where Nigerians are free to express themselves, politically engage and freely aspire to any office without regard to divisive considerations.

  • Osun LG polls: Come out to vote en mass, APC to electorate

Osun LG polls: Come out to vote en mass, APC to electorate

The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in Osun State of has charged the people of the state to come out en masse on Saturday to vote for its candidates in the local government election.

The party advised the people, particularly the APC supporters to ensure those they prefer to elect to be in charge of their local governments have their votes because “it is a responsibility they should not take lightly.”

According to the statement by its spokesperson, Kunle Oyatomi “Participation in local government election is as important as any other election in the country, and for locals, it should perhaps be more important for residents of the locality because it is their closest interaction with governance through which they can be heard.

“Since it is official from the state electoral commission that the election is holding on Saturday, and since no other agency is authorised by law to do so, it is imperative that voters turn up for the election.
‘Nobody should allow himself/herself  to be deceived that there will be no voting on that day. Anyone who says so will be attempting to fool you; so you have to come out and vote for your choice of candidate

“Any party that is not participating in the election may be doing so either out of ignorance or fear of possible disgraceful failure at the polls or both. However, the APC already has 280 of its candidates returned unopposed out of the 389 wards; but that’s not a reason to take victory for granted in the remaining 109 wards up for grabs. Go out on Saturday and register a decisive victory by voting for the APC from the rest of the contest.

“The local government election will give a vivid indication of what the governorship contest of September will be. The APC expects no less than a resounding victory.
‘As you read this, ‘the party continued, the PDP, which is the most vitriolic opposition party we have in Osun, is so disorganised that its centre cannot hold.

“Besides, all efforts to patch the factions together have repeatedly failed; which is an indication that the party is incapable of governing. They are falling apart even before the people of Osun show them the red card for the fourth time. The first time the PDP got the red card was in 2003, (but it took the court’s intervention in 2010 to stop PDP from stealing victory).

“The second time was just under a year that Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola came to power in 2011. That was when Sen. Iyiola Omisore and others were removed from the National Assembly. The third humiliation of Omisore and the PDP was in 2014 when in spite of the massive deployment of Federal might in the ex-Senator’s favour, he lost the governorship election woefully.

“The fourth time will be a double on Saturday and in September 2018 that crushing defeats in both the council and governorship elections will nail the coffins of the PDP once and for all. That will be the crowning glory for a brilliant patriot of Osun origin who has so robustly fought a monstrosity called PDP from stopping progress in Osun. God bless Ogbeni.”

  • PDP: Obasanjo’s letter vindicates our position on Buhari, APC

PDP: Obasanjo’s letter vindicates our position on Buhari, APC

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) has said that the scathing open letter by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, detailing the poor performance of President Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed its poor rating of the President and the ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC ).

Obasanjo had, in the letter, advised Buhari to perish the thought about seeking re-election in 2019 even as he described the administration as incompetent and nepotistic in its pattern of key federal appointments.

A statement on Tuesday by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said Obasanjo’s intervention was courageous, timeous and patriotic, adding that such has vindicated its position on President Buhari and the APC.

The opposition party however rejected the call by Chief Obasanjo for a third force, saying that such would amount to repeating the same blunder that brought in the “ideologically vacuous APC and the Buhari Presidency” which it said has wrecked havoc on the nation in its almost three years of governance.

The PDP further sated that it’s obvious that President Buhari and the APC have irredeemably failed the nation, adding that Nigerians have already taken an irrevocable position against them ahead of the 2019 elections.

According to the PDP, Chief Obasanjo’s counsel has rekindled the fate of the people in the democratic process, stressing however that the solution does not lie in creating another political quicksand in a third force but consolidating on a rescue mission with the repositioned PDP which it said Nigerians have already embraced.

The party recalled that in the heat of the 2015 elections, many citizens who claimed to have become tired of the PDP and its government, opted for a coalition of strange bedfellows that had little or no experience in governance as a vehicle for electoral victory.

“Expectedly, in their confusion, they have plunged us into this regrettable situation that has brought our nation to its knees”, the statement added.

Continuing, the PDP said, “Repeating the old mistake of congregating political strangers cannot help our nation at this time, more so, when the few concerns raised by the former President about the PDP no longer obtain under the refocused and rebranded PDP.

“The PDP is now standing on a truly democratic ground that perfectly represents and reflects the hopes and aspirations of all Nigerians irrespective of their class, creed or tribe.

“That is why our great party has now, more than ever before, become a centre of the new patriotic and broad-based engagements by well-meaning Nigerians and coalitions across board, including past leaders, in rekindling our democratic process that places priority on returning power to the people.

“The fact is that Nigerians overrated President Buhari in 2015, but they have now seen that he never possessed the capacity and the required aptitude to effectively govern our great nation and pilot a healthy economy.

“This accounts for the reason former President Obasanjo, just like most Nigerians today, are concerned about the quality of presidential candidates to be presented by various parties for the 2019 election.

“The fact is that while the APC is already caught up with President Buhari, the PDP is open for a new engagement that will throw up the President, which our nation truly deserves at this crucial moment”

The party called on Nigerians, including leaders across board, to come together to rebuild the nation on PDP’s consolidated base rather than traversing on another learning curve”.

  • Life harder under APC – Gov Emmanuel

Life harder under APC – Gov Emmanuel

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state has lamented the worsening economic condition of Nigerians under the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking yesterday in Uyo at the New Year Get-together ceremony of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), the Governor said  Nigerians fared better under the PDP than the APC government.

In fact, Emmanuel slammed those blaming the PDP for the country’s current predicament, adding that the high cost of food items, petrol, automobiles and the soaring exchange rate of the Naira to the Dollar are indicators that all is not well with Nigerians under the APC government.

“Everywhere you go people keep saying the PDP spoiled the country. When PDP governed Nigeria how much was a bag of rice? When PDP was in power how much was Toyota Corrolla? When PDP handed over power how much was a litre of petrol? When PDP handed over government how much was the exchange rate? Was it not between 186 to 188?

“I am standing here firm and sure that Nigerians now know the difference and they are eagerly waiting for PDP in 2019.

“Nigerians did not know or value what they had until they lost it ( PDP ). Nigerians now appreciate us much now. We can zero in on that and make a lot of impact. We shouldn’t play the defeatist approach”, Governor Emmanuel said.

He said that one of the ways to dislodge the APC in 2019 both at the state and federal levels was for party members to obtain the permanent voters card.

To this end, he directed party stakeholders occupying government positions to sensitize and mobilize party members in their wards to register and obtain their PVCs which which they can remove the APC government.

The Governor also hinted that political and traditional positions in the state would strictly be determined by the principle of zoning, adding that zoning makes election cheaper and eases tension.

“My intention is to make election cheap for us through zoning. I am happy that all of us have adhered to the principle of zoning.

“These days I get calls from communities when they want to select their village heads and they tell me they are adopting zoning. It makes life very easy”, he argued.

2019: Rivers accuses APC of plan to undermine 2019 elections

The Rivers state Government (RSG),  yesterday accused the All Progressives congress ( APC ), led Federal Government (FG),  of concluded plan to grant amnesty and pardon to the 32 cultisted who were declared wanted by the state security council last week.
The State commissioner for Information,  Emma Okah,  a Lawyer made the allegation a news statement in Port Harcourt,  the state capital yesterday.
Okah quoted security intelligent report at their disposal as saying that the essence of the amnesty was to woo the people into the APC party with the view of using them to format trouble at 2019 general elections.
Okah said, “The Rivers state government had earlier accuses All Progressives Congress ( APC ), in the state of has approached the 32 cultists who were declared wanted by the state security command for the purpose of ensuring their membership and in return grant them protection and liberty.
“The Rivers state government today in receipt of credible intelligence to the effect that the the Federal Government has concludes plans to grant amnesty to these 32 cultists who were declared wanted by the security in council of Rivers state.
“Details of this intelligence which we gathered indicates that the Fedetal Giveenmentbis granting the said cultists amnesty for the purpose of undue electoral advantage in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.”
He accused the FG of continuous efforts to undermining the efforts of the state government in exterminating violent crimes in the state but maintained that the plots would not deter the government in restoring peace into the state.
“In our view,  this action is not a surprise to us,  because we have repeatedly said it that some of these excesses of the Federal government are frustrating the fight against violent crime and criminality in our state.” he said.
“In particular, We have accused the Federal Special Anti robbery squad (F-SARS),  of not just being involved directly in perpetrating violent crimes in Rivers state but also are aiding and abating such crimes in the state.
“The activities of SARS in this regard have not ceased. This share development coming at the time they stated is winning the war against culrism and kidnapping therefore become a major set back and a ploy to undermine security in Rivers state, and bring to not,  the enormous financial resources we have committed to the issue of security in the State.
“Sadly, each time we recorded success in the promotion of security in the state,  the Federal Government and her agent take deliberate steps to sabortage the security of the state at the instigation of some unpatriotic sons of Rivers state who are serving at the centre.”
He called on various bodies and groups to save the soul of the state from the antics of APC, insisting that the 32 persons will not be delayed from the crimson list until they have answered to their crimes.
“We therefore call on the international community,  civil society organizations and well meaning Nigerians to ….act to compromise the security of Rivers state for ungodly political gain by the APC -led Federal Government.
“For the avoidance of doubt,  the Rivers state government will continue to work closely with the security agencies in the state”
In the swift reactions,  the state Publicity Secretary of APC, Chris Finebone said, “The simple truth is that since federal security forces killed Don Waney, Gov. Wike’s personal security architecture has suffered irredeemable damage.
“He is making very desperate attempts at changing the well known narrative that Don Waney and the PDP worked for the other. Those of you in the media know better. Gov. Wike and his officials are making desperate attempts at misleading ongoing investigations concerning those who sponsored, funded and protected Don Waney all these years.
“They know those the investigations will lead to, hence the desperate attempt to divert attention, but it is too late. Calling APC or the Federal Government simply confirms that the Rivers State governor and his men are at their wit’s end.
“We have said it over and over that Gov. Nyesom Wike cares little about giving good governance to the people of Rivers State and that is why he is perpetually in election mode.
“Instead of condemning Governor Wike, we empathise with him, because we believe that he needs help desperately. Gov. Wike is a victim of a flawed political leadership recruitment system, but unfortunately, Rivers people are the losers for it. It is sad.”he concluded.
