  • ‘Buhari will win Southeast’

Anambra South Senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Andy Ubah is confident of President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in Saturday’s election.

He urged Igbo to vote for Buhari as voting against him would not stop his victory.

Ubah, who addressed party faithful yesterday at a rally in Nnewi, urged them to resist the mistakes of 2015 when the party did not get enough votes in the Southeast.

He said: “It is obvious that President Muhammadu Buhari will be re-elected on Saturday. Whether you vote for him or not, he will win.

“It is unfortunate that in 2015, only 10 million votes were recorded for Buhari in the Southeast. But this time, I want Anambra South alone to give him not less than 1 million votes.”

  • APC chieftain takes Buhari’s message to Tompolo’s turf

The people of Gbaramatu Kingdom, one of the largest Ijaw kingdoms in Delta state, have been charged to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday to reap the full benefits the federal government has to offer.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta state and coordinator of the Delta South Canvassers for Buhari, Chief Michael Johnny, who gave the charge to the people of Gbaramatu in Warri on Wednesday, said it is time for the people of the state to move away from playing opposition.

Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West council area of Delta state is the home base of former warlord and leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Chief Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo.

Speaking to his people during the meeting in Warri, Jonny, who is also a member of Buhari Presidential Campaign Council, said a vote for Buhari will bring more development to the kingdom, which was neglected by past PDP governments.

“Being a member of Presidential Campaign Council of Buhari Support Groups Committee, I know that President Muhammdau Buhari will win the presidential election, I respect the fact that Gbaramatu indigenes are in different political parties but my concern is that in the next democratic dispensation come May 29, the Gbaramatu people cannot afford to be in opposition,” he said.

He however assured that there will be peace in Gbaramatu kingdom before, during and after the elections, urging the residents to vote for Buhari and APC on Saturday, noting that Buhari is a friend of Gbaramatu kingdom.

  • Kidnappers demand N200m ransom for Edo APC chieftain

Kidnappers of the Director General of the All Progressives Congress campaign in Ovia Federal Constituency, Mr. Monday Aighobahi, are demanding for a ransom of N200m to release him.

Aighobahi was kidnapped on Tuesday along the Benin/Lagos highway while returning from the APC campaign rally at Ofosu, Ovia South West Local Government Area.

His son was abducted in 2008 when he was Chairman of Ovia South West local government but later released after huge ransom was paid.

Candidate of the APC for Ovia Federal Constituency, Mr. Dennis Idahosa, who disclosed to newsmen in Benin City, said the kidnapping was politically motivated.

Idahosa disclosed that the kidnappers contacted him directly two hours after the abduction.

“Yes, they called around 9pm last night and again called early this morning by insisting on the said amount, N200m, before they will release Aighobhahi.

“I am quite aware of the sinister motive of the people behind this, but they have failed, the determination to liberate Ovia is not all about Idahosa, it is the resolve of the people and they cannot kill the will of the people,” he stated.

Aighobhahi was adopted alongside one Mike Ogiamen, the APC ward leader of Ogbogui, a political stronghold of Aighobhahi.

  • Polls: Igbo community backs APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Senatorial candidate representing Lagos West Solomon Adeola (Yayi)  got the support of the Igbo community in the Ejigbo Local Government Area of  Lagos State at the weekend. Adeola is seeking a second term at the National Assembly.

Lagos West Senatorial District comprises ten local government areas. It stretches from Ikeja through Oshodi, Mushin, Alimosho, Ajegunle, Festac Town, Ojo and right up to Badagry.

Traditional rulers (Ndiezes), titled men and women, women leaders, party faithful, the youths, community leaders and all APC supporters in the area trooped out in their numbers for the candidate. The forum also witnessed the Chieftaincy title conferment on Adeola.

Hon. Jude Idimogu, Lagos State House of Assembly member representing Oshodi/Isolo described the senator as an administrator.

Idimogu said the reception and chieftaincy title conferred on Adeola was a demonstration of love for him by the community. Adeola was conferred with ‘Dike Di Oranma 1 of Ndigbo’, Lagos State.

‘Dike di ora nma, Idimogu explained, was a brave man/warrior who is good to his people.

He said: “When you sit in your office and they come knocking, don’t close your door against them because you are the warrior they know,” he added.

“Ndigbo are telling you that they would support you for your second term bid, to tell you that they actually accepted you as their own, and by extension they are going to work for you and by the grace of God you are going to emerge victorious in the forthcoming election”. He however urged the Igbo community to vote massively for the All Progressives Congress in the coming general elections.

“Lagos is home for the Igbo, Idimogu noted. I don’t think any Igbo man living here should say Lagos does not favour him/her, we cannot complain about Lagos; I am a living example, when I came to Lagos, I came with virtually nothing it accepted me, and we are reaping the benefits in Lagos State.”

The Chairman, Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Monsuru Bello-Obe, said the senator had done well. According to him, they had reviewed what he has done and they have found him worthy of a second term.

“For us, it’s already a mandate, a mandate for him to go and win,” he said.

According to the Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State and Chairman Igbo Council of Ndieze Lagos State, Christian Uchechukwu Nwachukwu,  the Igbo community endorsed the senator because he has fulfilled all his promises to the people.

‘We endorse him for the second term to represent us, and we have given him the authority. All the Ezes in Lagos state have endorsed the senator as their candidate. We are going to work together to secure victory for you in the coming election.

“All the ezes and chiefs are here today, it’s on their own that they are here, that shows that you are their choice. What we are saying is that you cannot leave us and we cannot leave you, you know what’s good do it.

“We thank you very much for being with us here. The importance of this gathering today is that we will be with you because we are sure you will not let us down.”

Adeola said the gathering had confirmed the  Igbo in Lagos and Lagos West have supported him hundred percent.

“And I am saying that I am not going to take this support for granted, today is a day that the lord has made and it’s a day I will live to remember for good.”

“I am saying this because I least expected this honour you have given to me, and for you to look inwards and to accommodate me to this extent, I can never take this day like any other day, it’s a special day in my life.

“I have never seen it before but today I am seeing it live and direct, all the Ezes, all the Igbo communities, the Igbo youths, and all the elders and leaders of Igbo in Lagos, all the Igbo women and their leaders are here, what else do I want.

“I want to thank you because what you have done here today, you have shown to me that it’s not being an Igbo man or Yoruba man or Hausa, you have just demonstrated that you love me, and you love Lagos.

“You love all of us and what you have simply done is to say that you have done this for me and you have challenged me because another four years is around the corner that I would still need to come back to you and if I must have the opportunity to return to you in any form or in any format,  I must have a very good record to show that we have done this to you and what have I done in return. And I can assure you I will not disappoint you, I will not let you down.”

  • Imo: Uzodinma, Araraume boycott Peace Parley

    …as Nwosu, others sign pact

The governorship candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Hope Uzodinma and that of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Ifeanyi Araraume, Tuesday boycotted the signing of a Peace pact by candidates participating in the general election in Imo State.

Also absent at the event organised by the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) was a former governor of the State and candidate of the Accord party, Ikedi Ohakim.

Meanwhile the governorship candidates of the Action Alliance (AA), Uche Nwosu and that of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Emeka Ihedioha, signed the Agreement alongside other candidates including Ikenna Emmanuel of the Change Advocacy Party (CAP), Linus Okorie of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), among others.

Addressing the candidates shortly before the signing of the Agreement which was witnessed by Security Chiefs, Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), religious leaders and journalists, the State Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi, urged the politicians to play by the rules and jettison all forms of violence.

According to him, the State has witnessed relative peace when compared to other states in the Federation, as a result of the “cooperation and support of the people of the state”.

He said, “You will agree with me that this hard earned peace and tranquility we enjoy and experience in Imo State should be guarded jealously, thus, we have no other option than to ensure this endures before, during and after the elections”.

In his brief speech, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Pro. Francis Ezeonu assured that INEC is prepared to conduct credible election that will meet the aspirations of all the parties

He restated his commitment to provide level playing ground for all the political parties participating in the election, while pleading with the candidates to abide by rules and regulations guiding the election.

  • Vote APC candidates for continuity, progress – Obaseki

Less than a week to the 2019 general elections, Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has charged voters in Oredo Local Government Area to come out en masse to vote for candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) seeking to represent the people in the State and National Assemblies.

Obaseki gave the charge at the APC rally in Oredo LGA, where he described the 2019 elections as important events that would determine the future of Nigeria, urging residents of the area to ensure they vote for continuity and progress.

“The issue is very simple. Do you want to go back or go forward? My message today is simple: I just started to work in the state and if you want me to do more, you must vote for APC candidates to support me at the Senate and House of Representatives. I have gotten approval to do the Benin River Port, so I need strong people to represent us in Abuja,” he said.

While urging voters to support the APC candidate for Oredo Federal Constituency, Hon. Osaigbovo Iyoha, Obaseki said Iyoha has assisted him in actualising the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EDOBEST) programme while serving as member of the Edo State House of Assembly.

APC Senatorial candidate for Edo South, Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon, according to the governor, is also a trusted ally and a public servant who is ready to attract development to the state.

Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, said voting for APC candidates in the forthcoming elections translates to voting for better things to come, noting, “President Muhammadu Buhari has done a lot in the last four years; we are no longer importing fertilizer and now import only 10 per cent of rice. The president wants to spend Nigeria’s money on Nigerians, so let us vote for him.”

Other APC candidates seeking seats in the Edo State House of Assembly to represent Oredo LGA include Oredo East Constituency candidate, Osaro Obazee, and Oredo West Constituency candidate, Christopher Okaeben.

Chairman, Edo State Chapter of the APC, Barr. Anselm Ojezua, assured that the party is fully prepared to participate in the 2019 elections, adding, “We want to retain power and the only way to show that the governor is working is to vote for all APC candidates that will support the governor to achieve greater success.”

The chairman also received decampees from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and other political parties who pledged to ensure victory for the APC at the polls.

Chairman, Oredo LGA, Hon. Evbareke Jenkins Osunde, who welcomed the governor to the APC rally, said the residents in the council are happy to have benefitted from programmes initiated by the Obaseki-led administration.

  • Kwara APC hails Appeal Court judgment

All Progressives Congress ( APC ) Field Operations Directorate (FOD) of the Presidential Campaign Council in Kwara state has hailed the Appeal Court judgement recognising the Hon Bashir Bolarinwa executives.

By that judgement, the court also validated the authenticity of the nomination of Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq as the Kwara state APC governorship candidate.

In a statement Deputy Coordinator, Field Operations of the directorate, Kayode Oyin-Zubair said, “the procured judgement couldn’t have stood further judicial tests. We knew from the onset that the whole process was orchestrated to weaken our support base and cause confusion amongst our supporters.

“The authenticity of Bashir Bolarinwa executive was today affirmed by the appellate court. Earlier today an end was put to the shenanigans of Saraki and his cohorts here and there.

“We have always held that they can only run, there is no hiding place for them. The judiciary has shown that it couldn’t be bought, though a lower court judge allowed himself to be manipulated for a price.

“This is another serious low for Bukola Saraki in quick succession after he was shown a red card by the people of Kwara State during the presidential campaign in Ilorin.

“We congratulate our party leaders, members and teeming supporters across the state for standing with us since the struggle started,” the statement stated.

Oyin-Zubair therefore, enjoined all members of APC and its supporters in the state to come out enmass this Saturday to vote President Muhammadu Buhari and all APC candidates.

  • Appeal Court upholds Abdulrazaq governorship candidature

. Sets aside State High judgment

The Court of Appeals sitting in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital on Tuesday upheld the nomination of the state All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq.

The court set aside an earlier ruling by the state High Court.

A Kwara state High Court had last year ruled that the dissolved Ishola Balogun-Fulani executive is the authentic exco, thus nullifying any candidate produced by the Bashir Bolarinwa executives.

The court also held that state high court lack powers to entertain any suit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a unanimous judgement on the interlocutory appeals filed by the APC, Justice Hamma Akawu Barka, who read the ruling, said the originating summons by the Balogun-Fulani’s faction was not sealed by the registry and that robs the court of jurisdiction.

He upheld all the four grounds of appeal filed by the APC and set aside the ruling of the Kwara State High Court which was given on Oct 24th, last year.

It added that the case of the Ishola Balogun-Fulani was defective in all ramifications.

The court said the nomination of AbdulRazaq by the APC National Working Committee was in order.

It said a state executive committee of a party is just a branch of its national headquarters and so has no power or right to conduct any primaries to the offices of the president, governor, National Assembly or State Assembly positions.

By the ruling, the dissolution of the Ishola Balogun-led APC Executive in Kwara State by the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole led National Executive Committee now stands.

  • APC to U.S. envoy: Buhari will win without rigging

Party’s Campaign Council kicks against ‘threats’  Polls tip President for victory

United States Ambassador to Nigeria Stuart Symington got yesterday a piece of advice — watch your tongue.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council accused Mr. W. Stuart Symington of creating an impression that President Muhammadu Buhari cannot win a free and fair election.

His comments are implicit attacks against the government of Nigeria, the Council said.

The Campaign noted that the continous warning by the American Ambassador about “flawed elections” is capable of casting an unwarranted cloud over the process, adding that instead of encouraging our country toward credible elections, such statements undermine public confidence.

President Buhari will win the election fair and square, the Council said. Some reputable research organisations have tipped the President to win the race.

Its spokesman Festus Keyamo, in a statement issued in Abuja, said it was concerned about the Ambassador’s statement in which he threatened to “hold to account” anyone whose speech, no matter the motivation of that speech, engendered hatred during the elections.

Keyamo said these statements by the envoy imply that the Federal Government was inclined to rigging the election in favour of President Muhammadu Buhari. This is unfair and unacceptable as President Buhari has never been accused of electoral malpractice all his life, Keyamo said.

The statement reads: “We are deeply concerned about many of the expressions of the United States’ Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador W. Stuart Symington and other Western diplomats which have been directed towards Nigeria’s upcoming elections. Whilst we laud and whole-heartedly welcome their interests in the elections, many of these expressions have been notably off- key.

“The continued warnings about ‘flawed elections’ are capable of casting an unwarranted cloud over the process. Instead of encouraging our country toward credible elections, such statements undermine public confidence. It would appear that these envoys seem to have discredited the election before it has even taken place.

“We truly hope some of the statements attributed to these diplomats are inaccurate. For instance, the Premium News reported that Ambassador W. Stuart Symington threatened to ‘hold to account’ anyone whose speech, no matter the motivation of that speech, engendered hatred. We all agree that any speech willfully intended to trigger violence is condemnable.

“However, in condemning other forms of political speech, the American envoy overstepped his ambassadorial brief. For instance, the American Ambassador was reported to have condemned a situation where a candidate says that his opponent’s political and economic policies are abhorrent and dangerous to the greater welfare of the people and calls on the citizens to hate and reject such policies.

“In our view, this is a correct statement because it is the duty of the candidate to tell the people these truths to protect the nation from subsequent calamity. But Ambassador Symington says his country would punish such necessary political speeches.

“For us, it is significant to note that such strong political speeches are not unlawful in the United States, but Ambassador Symington is seeking to penalise such speeches by Nigerians. He seeks to shrink our ambit of free speech so that we may behave in accordance with their vision of well-behaved Africans, rather than in consonance with our vision of our own democracy, no matter how tumultuous and dramatic we may be.

“It would appear that his position seeks to prohibit forms of expression integral to our political discourse. These forms of expression have time and time again been adjudged to be constitutionally-protected speeches by the United States Supreme Court.

“However, Ambassador Symington intentionally issued his threats to place a chilling effect on speeches in Nigeria that, if uttered in America, would be constitutionally protected. Unfounded allegations and threats to penalise people for constitutionally-protected free speech is improper interference in our internal affairs. Sadly, what Ambassador Symington and some other western diplomats are doing border on the improper.

“We take the view that the constant statements by Ambassador Symington and the other diplomats are implicit attacks against the government of Nigeria. These statements imply the Nigerian government is inclined to rig the election in favour of President Muhammadu Buhari. This is unfair and unacceptable to us. President Muhammadu Buhari has never been accused of electoral malpractice all his life.

“However, in contrast, former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar publicly boasted a few months ago that he rigged the 2003 election in the Southwest states. Here, we have an open confession of blatant electoral malfeasance by the PDP candidate. But in all of these, there seems to be no concern by Ambassador Symington and other diplomats about this well-acknowledged proclivity of the main opposition.

“We expected that such open confession to rigging in the past would have drawn condemnation from the United States. Rather what we witnessed recently was the ignoble act of giving such a self-confessed rigger with a decade-old indictment in America for corruption hanging over his head a special status to enter the U.S for a few days. Such is the double standard that America now displays for the whole world to see.

“It is unfortunate that most of these countries that sermonise about free and fair elections have ugly histories of denial of voting right to people because of their colour and are still facing many challenges with their electoral systems till date.

“The continued reference and praise of the 2015 election by Ambassador Symington clearly shows he needs further briefing about the Nigerian situation. For his information, the 2015 presidential election, at the end of the day, produced the correct outcome, but with flawed figures in many areas.

“Though they lost, the figures attributed to the PDP were inflated in many places, especially in the South South, to save the face of the past President and to reduce the margin of his defeat. President Buhari is determined to improve on the 2015 elections and so it cannot even be our benchmark.”

The statement pointed out the responsibility of an American ambassador stressing that his comments should reflect deep thoughts.

He went on: “An American ambassador has a great responsibility in representing the strongest economic and military power in the world. His comments carry weight because of the status of his nation. This means his comments should reflect a deep knowledge of the subject.

“Sadly, Ambassador Symington has not shown the deep knowledge of Nigerian situation. The impression he creates by constantly harping on suspected government interference with the electoral process is that President Buhari cannot win without tipping the results. He seems to be saying that only a PDP victory will be evidence of a fair election.

“Again, he is in great error. From all of the information at our disposal, President Buhari can and should win a free and fair election. However, it appears to us that Ambassador Symington is substituting his subjective conclusions for the sovereign will of the Nigerian people.  In doing so, he has abandoned the impartiality of a true envoy and has trespassed into interfering in our electoral process.

“Instead of encouraging free and fair elections, these judgmental statements and threats only cast an unnecessary pall over the elections and the nation. This is an international disservice and not international diplomacy. The days of unquestioned condescension to Western powers are long gone and we are not prepared at this time in Nigeria to recede to that era.

“Nigerians will define Nigeria’s democracy. We shall hold fair and just elections, not because of scolding by diplomats, but because we have sufficient intelligence and morality to do what is right for ourselves.

“If Ambassador  Symington has familiarised himself with Nigeria’s history from 1999 till date, he would have realised that those in the main opposition are being haunted by their past: they think President Buhari would behave exactly like they did all these years when they consistently rigged elections and denied Nigerians the right to choose their leaders.

“If Ambassador Symington truly intends to be impartial, his statements should acknowledge that both Government and Opposition (particularly in states where the opposition have governors in place) must respect the process and refrain from rigging.

“We expect him to counsel both governing party and the Opposition from any form of electoral malpractice. After all, it is not only Governments at the centre that rig elections. Elections can also be rigged in opposition-controlled areas.

“It is not too late for Ambassador Symington to repair the damage of his uninformed statements. He needs to speak as an impartial envoy instead of a person who appears to have prejudged the quality of the process and the outcome. Until he attains that level of informed impartiality, whatever good he seeks is better achieved by his silence than by tendentious utterances.”

  • Buhari ‘ll win, say polls

President Muhammadu Buhari will win Saturday’s election, according to opinion polls conducted by two research organisations, NOI Poll and British Business Group.

Their findings confirm that President Buhari of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are clearly in a two-horse race, adding that other presidential candidates are not in serious contention.

Also, the findings did not contradict the report of New York-based global research firm, Eurasia Group, which predicted that the President will win by 60 percent.

The NOI Poll, which was commissioned by the Anap Foundation, led by Atedo Peterside, analysed respondents’ support for President Buhari, based on six factors – continuity, fight against corruption, integrity, improving security, helping the poor and preferred choice.

Also, participants’ preference for Atiku were analysed, based on the criteria of “better economy, better governance, preferred choice, past political records, and restructuring”.

However, the findings suggested voter apathy, particularly in the Southeast and Southwest, unlike the Northwest, Northeast and Northcentral zones.

The organisation noted that the apathy was not surprising, stressing that the choice of two elderly Muslim candidates for the presidential election may have alienated quite a few in the South.

“That President Muhammadu Buhari actually had an overall lead in our polls is cold comfort for his supporters because further analysis confirms that only approximately one-third of the electorate nationwide claimed to be backing his candidacy. Atiku is lagging behind President Muhammadu Buhari.”

It added: “The strongest argument against Atiku were also those that were brandied around by some of his new friends, who were his erstwhile political enemies. All of a sudden, they would have us forget everything bad that they told us about Atiku….So, PMB is in the lead, but Atiku has momentum.”

It stressed: “Buhari will secure a win…Buhari maintains support in the North and Southwest, the same regions with the largest share of registered voters.”

The British Business Group said President Buhari’s support base in the North and Southwest zones cannot be penetrated by the opposition.

The group said: “Buhari maintains support in the North and Southwest, the same regions with the largest share of registered voters. Institutional bias towards the ruling party will also favour an APC victory. PDP will struggle to mobilise support outside its traditional strongholds, but will face difficulties in funding its campaigns and internal divisions among ambitious governors.”

According to the Eurasia Group, the former vice president faces certain odds, even as he enjoys a divided support from key elements in the opposition party.

It noted that while these elements were working to retain their seats in their various constituencies, they were not dissipating the same energies and resources on the presidential contest.

The research firm also ruled out the possibility of protests and violence, if President Buhari is re-elected.
