  • Why Wike is at war with his conscience, says Senator Uchendu

The lawmaker representing Rivers East Senatorial District, Senator Andrew Uchendu, has stated that Governor Nyesom Wike is at war with his conscience, because he (Wike) betrayed his benefactor, Rotimi Amaechi, a former Rivers governor and current Minister of Transportation.

Uchendu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, through his Special Assistant on Media, Solomon Okocha, described as shocking, the decision of Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to work against Amaechi who facilitated his re-election as chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government council, made him chief of staff, Government House, Port Harcourt in 2007 and recommended him to the then President Goodluck Jonathan for ministerial appointment in 2011.

Wike, through Rivers Commissioner for Information and Communications, Chief Emma Okah, a lawyer, earlier alleged that Uchendu, a three-term former member of the House of Representatives, was at war with his conscience over the sack of Senator George Sekibo of PDP by the Court of Appeal.

Uchendu said: “I am not at war with my conscience over my electoral victory, because the same judiciary that ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to withdraw the certificate of return from George Sekibo of the PDP, and immediately gave it to me, having won majority of the lawful votes cast during the December 10, 2016 rerun, was the same institution that declared Wike governor of Rivers, even after the Supreme Court described the 2015 governorship election in the state as a theatre of war.

“If there is anybody who is fighting with his conscience, then it should be Wike, who after so many years of eating from the same plate with his former master, Amaechi, turned around and betrayed him like the Biblical Judas Iscariot, simply because of inordinate political ambition. After treating the former Rivers governor in such a manner, Wike has no moral right to talk about who has conscience or not.

“Wike’s conscience is also troubling him, because the six police officers, who he used to invade the Rivers East collation centre, to make sure that I was not declared the winner of the re-run election, have all been dismissed from service. The sack of the 23 INEC officials, who confessed to have received N360 million from Wike to rig the polls must be a terrible burden on Rivers governor’s conscience.

“It is unfortunate that Wike, who did not contest any election with me, has continued to wail on behalf of my opponent. This is simply a case of one crying more than the bereaved. If Wike is not satisfied with the judgment of the appellate court, he should get ready to meet me in the field, if I eventually get the ticket of my party to run in 2019.”

The Rivers governor, while also speaking, condemned the decision of Uchendu not to accept his gift of a brand new, 2017 model of Toyota Land Cruiser Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), which other members of the National Assembly from Rivers state recently accepted, to facilitate their jobs and positively project the image of the Niger Delta state.

The representative of Rivers East senatorial district stated that he had not been officially informed of the allocation of SUV by Wike’s administration.

He said: “As at today, no official of the Rivers State government has informed me of any vehicle allocated to me by Wike’s government. My written request to the Rivers governor over four months ago for a courtesy visit and a reminder a month ago were met with cold silence. So, saying that I refused to accept the SUV from Wike is an attempt to blackmail me.

“I wish to advise Wike to stop fighting me, because I believe that the time is ripe to make peace for the greater good of Rivers State. Wike knows that I have the capacity to make peace happen. Fortunately, Rt. Hon. Amaechi has consented to my proposal for reconciliation, peace and development in Rivers State. Wike should take a cue from the Transportation Minister, by first responding positively to my request for a courtesy visit.”

Uchendu also described as a huge success, last Saturday’s thanksgiving service in Port Harcourt, which was organised by his family to honour God for his electoral victory and quick recovery from serious sickness, making him to be flown overseas for medical attention, but expressed surprise that Wike, out of hatred for him, declared a “special” sanitation exercise for the first time this year, to frustrate the programme, insisting that God, however, took control.

  • Cross River APC chieftain backs Oshiomole for National Chairman

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State, Utum Eteng, has thrown his support behind Adams Oshiomole as the next national chairman of the party.

Eteng, a lawyer and also the General Coordinator of Companions for Buhari, a support group made up of professionals for the President’s reelection, said Oshimole has the capacity to match propaganda of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a statement made available to The Nation in Calabar on Wednesday, he said, “I hereby affirm my support to the good news that our dear President Mohammadu Buhari has thrown his support behind His Excellency Adams Oshimole still from Edo state as Oyegun as the possible replacement for the exalted office of APC National Chairmanship.

“Let me boldly and openly commend the President as the leader of the APC for his foresight, wisdom and well-thought out choice of Oshimole to replace Chief Oyegun whose tenure from an unbiased and objective assessment has been uneventful, unprofitable for the peaceful existence and cohesion of the ruling APC nationwide.

“I wish to commend the leadership of the South South Zonal APC Ntufam Hilard Eta for having the courage to convene an enlarged Zonal meeting of the APC in Benin City where the candidature of Oshimole was confirmed with some State Chapter in attendance and also adopting Adams as the man of the moment.

“Thirdly, the leaderships of Edo and Delta State APC are similarly commended for leading the vanguard for the overwhelming adoption of Oshimole.  The public adoption from all intents and purposes amounts to passing a technical vote of no confidence on Chief Oyegun, the reason why every right thinking APC members nationwide should support this adoption with immediate effect and align with the choice of Oshimole by the President.

“The APC, after having gone through four years of inactivity, docility, and inept leadership, needs a man as firm, brash and rugged as Adam Oshimole whose experience as the former National leader of the Labour Congress would matter a lot and count in his determination to reposition the ruling APC.

“Oshimole without mincing words has the capacity to match words for words and action for action against the recent noise making and propaganda of the PDP that took advantage of the docility of the Oyegun Led NWC and resorted to vilifying the APC.  The choice of Oshimole is a perfect choice.  His doggedness, ruggedness, brashness and capacity to speak out boldly will in no small measure compliment the calm disposition and nature of the President.

“APC members cannot continue to pretend that all is internally well with the party in the many State Chapters, and within the leadership of the National Assembly.  Chief Oyegun did not handle these conflicts well at all.  He may not like to hear this, but this is the whole truth.

“At this moment, the APC needed to be promptly redeemed from the stress of hanging as a worn-out skeleton onto the frame of the President and Jagaban Tinubu due to the ineptitude of the Oyegun led National NWC and NEC exposed the party to.   APC members are urged on to identify with the choice of the President if the ultimate is to move the party as a ruling party forward.”

  • Nigerian worker, most dedicated, resilient in the World – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the Nigerian worker remain the key drivers of the nation’s multi-faceted development and a major partner in the Nigerian project.

In a message to Nigerian workers on the occasion of the workers day celebration, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi describe them as the most dedicated, resilient and hardworking set of workers in the world.

The statement reads: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) extends good wishes and greetings to all Nigerian workers as they join their counterparts across the world in celebrating the 2018 International Workers Day.

“Unarguably, the Nigerian worker remains one of the most dedicated, resilient and hardworking in the world. They remain a key driver of the country’s multi-facet development.

“Despite challenges particularly on the economy, we celebrate Nigerian workers for staying positive and being a partner in nation-building as well as contributing towards efforts to take the country to its deserved heights.

“While we felicitate with the various workers unions in the country on the occasion of the International Workers Day celebration, we call on labour and trade unions in the country to continue ongoing dialogue with the government aimed at improving workers’ salaries and general welfare.”

  • Publish your audited account, financial statement: APC tells PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has challenged the main opposition part, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to publish its audited accounts and financial statement if it had any rather than cast aspersions at the party and making baseless allegations.

The party said in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said its National Convention committee was yet to submit a budget for the convention expected to take place in a yet to be announced date in June.

Reacting to the PDP’s claim of mismanagement of public funds against the APC by alleging it asked governors to contribute about N6 billions fund the national convention, Abdullahi said the budget for the convention was properly captured in its 2018 budget which was approved by its National Executive Committee.

The statement reads: “In reacting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) allegations on the management of the All Progressives Congress (APC) finances and the funding for the Party’s upcoming 2018 National Convention among other unsubstantiated allegations contained in a statement by a spokesman for the PDP, we refer the PDP to the APC’s 2016 published independent audit report and accompanying financial statements.

“In respect of the funding for our upcoming national convention, we also refer the PDP to our earlier issued statement (http://officialapcng.com/re-despite-owing-salaries-apc-governors-to-contribute-n6billion-for-upcoming-congresses-convention/) and also invite PDP to note that the APC convention committee has not submitted a budget for the convention.

“Besides, the expenses for the National Convention to elect national officers and the presidential convention are duly captured in our 2018 budget. Therefore, the issue of N6billion convention expenses is neither here nor there.

“While we assure Nigerians that the APC has not adopted the PDP’s practice of dipping their hands into the public till to fund its political activities as brazenly displayed during the 2015 elections, we equally call on the PDP to emulate the APC’s best practice of financial probity and openness by making public their audited reports and financial statements, if they have any.”

  • APC may wade in Buhari, NASS feud

    Shifts National Convention

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is to wade into the feud between the Executive arm of government and its members in the National Assembly in the interest of the nation’s nascent democracy and in the interest of the party and the nation.

Although the party said it does not have any position yet in the motion moved on Thursday by Senator  Mathew A. Urhoghide to impeach the President, National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi said that it will continue to play its role to ensure that whatever needed to be done to ensure stability of the system is done.

He said “The party has no position at this time because it is a party thing. So, the party does not have a position on that. Don’t forget that the National Assembly is not, are up of APC alone.

“Our role is that we will have to continue to ensure that whatever we need to do to maintain stability in the system will have to be done.

“That is the role we have continued to play and in the context of this development as well, we will immediately begin to make initiatives to lease between our own caucus in the National Assembly and the Executive to ensure that whatever is the issue between the two arms of government and our party members are concern are immediately resolved in the interest of stability, in the interest of the country and in the interest of the party as well as in the interest of our democracy.”

Meanwhile, the part has shifted its elective national convention which is supposed to

Produce a new leadership for the party to a yet to be announced date, but which the party says will be in July.

The convention was earlier scheduled to hold in Abuja on 14th May and the shift in date may not be unconnected with the observations made by the governors of the part that the timetable for the party congresses and national convention was too tight.

Also affected in the shift in date is the party congress from the ward to the state level.

Abdullahi said in a short statement made available to newsmen in Abuja that ward congresses will not hold on the 5th of May, while local government and state congresses will now hold on the 12th and 19th May respectively.

  • Oshiomhole’s endorsement: Buhari is entitled to his choice – APC

May shift national convention for Ramadan fast

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said on Wednesday that President Muhammadu Buhari was entitled to his choice of candidate for the National Chairmanship position of the party ahead of the elective national convention slated for May 14 in Abuja, but said the President’s choice may not be binding on the party as he has not foreclosed the possibility of others contesting the position.

The party also said there was the possibility that the timetable for congresses and national convention may be adjusted in view of observations made by some of the governors that the timetable was too tight and made no room for errors.

He said the President merely expressed his opinion to about four or five governors who went to seek his opinion on his choice of candidate for the National Chairmanship position, pointing out that if those governors the President confided in decided to make it public, the president should not be held responsible for that.

Abdullahi said: “What we were told at the meeting was that the President had a meeting with some governors and they asked to know who he wanted to support and I think that he told them his preference. But that has nothing to do with the meeting we had today.”

On whether the NWC will stand with the president, he said: “I don’t think that is a fair question to ask me because you will be asking me for my personal opinion and I am not here to give you my personal opinion. What I can tell you is that Chief Oyegun will make his position known within the next couple of days whether he is going to contest the chairmanship or not.

“The President is a party member and has the right to have his preferences and I don’t get the feeling that he told anyone this is the person you must support. He met with some of the governors who went to ask him and they were actually four governors. I don’t think that the governors that met him on Wednesday to say he told them this were up to five or six.

“So, maybe they probably asked him and because of the relationship he has with them, he told them what his preferences are  and they felt that it was important for them to make this available to the public. I don’t get the feeling that President Buhari called the governors and told them that this is the way you must go.

“Don’t forget that it was this same office that we came to the NEC meeting on the 27th of March and the president said NEC has taken this decision regarding the tenure of party executives across the country and that he has been advised that the position was not consistent with the position of the law and asked the party to take a second look at it. He did not say he has taken a position, so there should be no more conversation.

“The opportunity he gave the party has made us better because that is how we arrived at the position we are discussing now. The consultation he had with these governors was a private conversation. He did not address a press conference to say this is person I want.

“So, if those individuals he confided in felt it was necessary for them to make the position public, I don’t think it is fair for us to hold the president responsible for this. I don’t think he has foreclosed anything or that he has said this is the way everyone must go.”

The APC spokesman who insisted that the issue of who will, contest the party positions was not discussed with the governors said in view of observations made by some of the governors on the timetable prepared by the party for congresses and the national convention, there was the possibility of a review of the dates.

He disclosed that in fixing the timetable for congresses and the National convention, the party was conscious of the forthcoming ramadan fast and did not want any political activity to take place within the month

He said: “the meeting was called to emphasize to the state governors the need to ensure that congresses were held in a very transparent manner and that there are free and fair. We are aware that some governors have been making statements which we believe are giving the impression that we don’t intend to hold congresses in particular states.

“So the meeting was to emphasis to go the governors that we want congresses in a very transparent manner and ensure that the processes are free and fair. One of the major concern of the party at the beginning was that we should do everything possible to avoid rancor that could be generated as a result of the congresses. It was agreed that one of the major ways of avoiding that rancour is to ensure that the congresses are transparent to the majority of the people.

“As you know, the governors are interested in the committee’s that will come to their states to conduct the congresses and we made it clear to them that this is a constitutional matter and the constitution of the APC impose the composition of the committees on the NWC only and that by Friday this week, the list of the congress committee members will be ready.

“There was also observation on the side of the governors about the timetable for the congresses and convention and the observation was that the timetable was too closely packed and that it does not leave much room for errors. The observation was that the timetable as currently constituted was determined because of the Ramadan and we want to be sensitive to the feelings of Muslims who will be fasting during ramadan and we wanted to, as much as possible avoid conducting any political activity during the period of Ramadan.

“There were other observations and so, there is the possibility that the timetable may be reviewed. That is not decided yet, but it was agreed that the NWC will take a second look of the timetable and see the possibility for adjustment because there are other issues.

“If you review the timetable, there is the possibility that all the items on the timetable will be affected. But that is not a decision that has been taken. The only decision that has been taken is that the NWC should take another look at the timetable. It may come back to recommend that the timetable be retained as it is or that the dates be shifted. We don’t think that anyone is making calls for the amendment of the timetable for ulterior motives other than the logistics of it.

Collaborating the party position, Kano state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said apart from from the issue of the timetable for convention and congresses, the meeting agreed that the zoning will be maintained for the party officers “but the only clause is that they should go and discuss with those governors in charge of the zones where the officers should come from.

“For example, the chairman of the party will have to come from the South south, the secretary from the northeast and all other positions like that. We have resolved all issues amicably. The NWC will have to get back to us in a week’s time.”

Reacting to a statement from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that Buhari was imposing former Edo state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as chairman of the party, Ganduje’s said “There is no imposition at all. Everybody is free to contest just as everybody is free to hold an opinion on who should lead the party. I don’t think that there is any case of imposition because it is not a guideline and not part of the constitution.

“Just like every other person, Mr President has the right to air his opinion but that does jog mean he should stop any person who will like to contest from contesting. Mr President’s opinion is not constitutional and it is not a non-constitutional opinion as well.

“He just voiced out his thought which will serve as a guideline to some and otherwise to some. The issue of being undemocratic does not even arise. There is what we call guided democracy and we regard what Mr President said as such. If that is what will make the party stable and avoid the fallout after the election like we saw in the PDP, it will be better for us.”

Unlike the usual tradition of making opening remarks, the meeting which started about 2.30 pm and presided over by the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie Oyegun began without any opening remark.

Governors Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), Abdullahi Umar Gabduje (Kano), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Raul Aregbesola (Osun), Sani Bello (Niger), Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Badaru Abubakar (Jigawa), Ibrahim Gaidam (Yobe), Tanko Almakura (Nasarawa), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) and Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara). The governors of Kwara and Katsina were represented by their deputies.

Governors of Lagos, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Sokoto and Kebbi were absent at the meeting and were not represented.

  • We’ll sue Fayemi if cleared to contest – Group

An interest group in Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) has threatened to go to court to challenge the eligibility of the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, if cleared to contest at the May 5 primary.

The group, Concerned APC Patriots, said Fayemi’s indictment by a Judicial Panel of Inquiry set up by Ekiti State government has rendered him ineligible to vie for the party’s ticket.

But Special Adviser (Media) to Fayemi, Mr. Yinka Oyebode, described the Concerned APC Patriots as a “faceless group unknown to the party working for a paymaster.”

He said the minister is not bothered by the opposition to his nomination and would not be disturbed by the ranting of a tainted ant.”

Addressing a briefing in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, the group’s Coordinator, Dr. Ifeolu Olubusuyi, also urged the party to listen to the voice of its members who are concerned over Fayemi’s eligibility to stand as a candidate.

Olubusuyi also urged the party’s national leaders to embrace the zone the governorship ticket to Ekiti South senatorial district which had never produced governor since the state was created in 1996.

He said: “We are concerned and advise that the APC headquarters must adhere strictly to its own rules and disqualify whoever has not met the minimum conditions for governorship as indicated by the constitution and guidelines”.

“We are patriotic Nigerians and APC members, who believe in constitutionality. We won’t tolerate subversion of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under any guise.

“So, our party must comply with the provisions of the laws. The laws must not be applied based on convenience.

“If you check the nomination form of our party, there is a column where the aspirant was asked whether he has been indicted before or not. This is not an issue that can be suppressed else, our party will have no candidate in this election.

“And should our party decided to gloss over this and go ahead to screen former Governor Fayemi, we will have no choice than to challenge his eligibility in court, because our party is very dear to our heart and we don’t want to miss the opportunity to reclaim Ekiti in this election .

“We have consulted our legal team and they are fine-tuning arrangements on all necessary steps to take as regards this”, he said.

Oyebode said: “There is machinery in place. We are not a lawless society and APC is not a lawless party. Everything is being done according to the dictates of a laid down procedure.

“They are faceless group not known to the party, having collected money from their paymaster, they want to disrupt what the party is doing. Let them go ahead.

“This is a faceless group and we believe they have a paymaster. However, they can go ahead, we are not bothered about all that, it all amounts to ranting of a tainted ant.”

  • Oshiomhole’s endorsement childish – Oyegun

The National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on Tuesday hit back at South south zonal leadership and Stakeholders who met in Benin on Monday.

The meeting reportedly endorsed former Edo state Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, as their preferred candidate for the chairmanship position of the party.

Oyegun told newsmen in his office at the party national secretariat that voting for the leadership of the party is not done at the state or zonal level, but at the national convention.

However, he added that they have the right to do whatever they want to do.

The APC national chairman, whose candidacy was also rejected by his state chapter chapter of party, said he was not surprised, saying “they have reason for doing what they have done.”

“Don’t forget one of those who want my job is from there and is the immediate last governor. He was instrumental to installing the present governor in the state.”

Oyegun, who would not state categorically whether or not he will be seeking reelection as National Chairman of the party, said consultation on the issue of whether he will be contesting or not has been concluded, adding that whatever choice he makes will be made known once the Convention committee comes out with its guidelines.

His brief interaction with newsmen goes thus:

We heard that you are seeking re-election as the National Chairman

Well, I’m going to know when the convention committee announces their programmes. Then when I’m going to buy a form. That is if I will re-contest, I will let you know.

Do we take it to mean that you are still consulting?

The consultation I think is concluded .

What is your reaction to the endorsement of Oshiomhole by the south south leaders?

Childish, absolutely childish. The voting is done at the convention and not in state houses, not in government houses.

What do you make out of what transpired in the Edo state chapter of the party?

They have their reasons for what they did and you have to respect their own reasons, however wrong it is. Don’t bother about this teaser, I will give a comprehensive interview to speak with you people when the time comes.

Does the level of opposition from your state bother you?

No, it doesn’t because one of those who want my job is from Edo and he was the immediate past governor and he was very instrumental in installing the present governor. I think it is a case of rub my back, I rub your back that is playing out.

  • Ondo APC’s reaction to Boroffice’s statement

The Ondo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized the statement credited to the lawmaker representing Ondo Central District, Senator Ajayi Boroffice that elective congresses will be jettisoned for mere filling of the vacancies created  in the Ward, Local Government, State and National Executive Committee(NEC).

The statement alleged that some party officials in the state have perfected plans to hoard nomination forms from legitimate party members

But, in a statement by its Director of Media & Publicity, Steve Otaloro said members of the APC know that nomination forms are not yet out and those who are coming to conduct the election have not arrived the state yet, wondering why  Boroffice is cooking up this falsehood.

He said “This electoral body would be responsible for the conduct of the election. They would call for stakeholders meeting where they would reel out the modalities of the election. We currently don’t know who are members of this electoral committee which would be sent down by the National secretariat in Abuja.

“So, it is not the State Secretariat that would select and conduct the election. We are aware that Boroffice had compiled list of aspirants from his camp in his clandestine meetings, promising them nomination forms last week.

“But to save his face from looming embarrassment, he’s now alleging the party leadership of hoarding the nomination forms even when they are not yet out.

“No doubt, Boroffice has lost touch with our party as well as the people and it is obvious he would lose out in the coming congress.

“This is another lie least expected of a distinguished personality like Senator Borofice Ajayi. It’s a sheer figment of his imagination. Nomination form is not yet out, so how could this be hoarded.

“This falsehood revealed how distant Senator Boroffice is to our party and confirmed his scheming to defect from the party.  We know from good source that he has been holding series of clandestine meetings with some people in his bid to defect to another party to execute his obnoxious ambition.

“How would a sitting senator be unaware of the happenings in his acclaimed party. Rather than contacting his party secretariat, he went to the media to cook up stories against our party leadership.

“What would the party gain in disenfranchising its members or hoard nomination forms? The party stands to gain more with more aspirants accessing the nomination forms and participating in the election.

“Senator Boroffice should know that APC Ondo State chapter has resolved to abide by the dictates of our party constitution. Boroffice is not in a position to tell us what our party constitution says about conduct of Congress because he’s double dealing.

“No one knows where he belongs. He is far away from our party that’s why he doesn’t know what is going on in the party.

“He should be asked when last he visited the party secretariat either in his local government or the state headquarters.

“Boroffice is only trying to create crisis in our party by cooking up these allegations because he’s jittery having lost out in all his unholy scheming.  Although we are not surprised because this is his stock in trade, causing crisis and fighting constituted authorities right from when he was in Labour Party (LP)”.
