Oyegun: APC to study outcome of Anambra poll

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Chief John Odigie Oyegun has said that the party’s performance at the just concluded Anambra governorship election was a clear indication that the party was making a major inroad into the southeastern part of the country.

Speaking when he formally received Emeka Ojukwu Jnr, son of late Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu into the party, Oyegun said the party intends to set up a committee to study the outcome of the outcome of the Anambra election with a view to finding out what went wrong and how to improve on subsequent elections.

He described Ojukwu jnr as a major asset in the APC’s ongoing drive to mainstream the South East in the national governance and political decision-making process in the APC.

He said: “I thank you for choosing the APC, a family that is practical in its political orientation. It is significant that you chose the platform of the final rally at Akwa to make your very significant statement.

“I noted particularly the interpretation of your illustrious father’s interpretation of joining the NPN and the significance of being part of the Party’s decision making process such that for anybody who seeks to represent a large group, nationality of that nature, it is critical that he seeks to be where decisions that may affect his people are made.

“I hope the lesson went home, it is a lesson we will continue to propagate, particularly in the south-east because we hold the region very dear.

“I have no doubt that your appearance there (Akwa) also contributed significantly to the progress we have made in Anambra state and we are looking forward to being able to propagate that to the other South East states as we start approaching the next set of elections.

“I consider that we have made a lot of gains in spite of not winning the Anambra state. But it is clear if people interpret properly that the APC given the base from which we were starting, given the kind of intense propaganda that goes out there that the South East is against the APC – whether it is religion, ethnic or even historical – we have made some progress.

“But we are not resting on that. We are immediately setting up a team to study the elections, to look at whatever significant issues it has thrown up, to find ways in which we can improve our performance as we spread into the rest of the South East, basically to tell us what we did not do right in Anambra State which we need to correct as the electoral processes begin in the rest of the South East.

“We hope it will throw up valuable lessons that will help us perform much better in subsequent elections in the South East. There is no question at all that your name is an asset, what you stand for is an asset and we hope that in the next few months, you will be much more closely integrated within the party structure at the national level and of course in the South East.

“For people to join us at this time is a clear indication that they understand what is going on and are ready to put their names, reputation, energies, and resources behind our effort to rebuild the country and be part of this process of change. This is a struggle that we must win. The nation cannot afford to lose, because greatness beckons and unless we get our act right, we are not going to get there”.

Speaking earlier, Emeka Ojukwu jnr, said his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) was driven by his belief that the South East must occupy its rightful place in the national governance and the political decision-making process of the country.

Ojukwu jnr: “I decided to lead by example. I have been talking about this for a while and I decided it was time to take the step forward. It is a challenge, there are some people that will not be happy about that, but you have to be bold, take a step and let people understand where you are coming from and why you are doing what you are doing.

“APC have been seen in our part of the country as the ‘other’ and I believe we are now showing that the APC is a Party that can contend equally with any other Party in the South East and do just as well.

“We now know that Igbo people are part of the APC, the APC are part of Igbo and Igbo are valued part of the Nigerian nation. We hit around the 25 percent mark in terms of votes in the Anambra election which is not bad given where we are coming from. I think in the future, we are going to do a lot better.

“Let me say this about my father, we shouldn’t take our history and our past to be shackles that hold us in one place. Rather they should be stepping stones and building blocks to get us moving towards the future. When my father came back from exile, he had the option to join an ethnic-based party, but he chose to move to the centre and there was a reason for that.

“You need to be at the table where decisions are being made. If you are not there, you will always get the short end of the stick and you will be marginalised. That is the message I want to help to propagate. This is a much bigger party than the one I came from, so I put myself in your service to help us achieve our dreams. For me, anyway that I can help to push this message forward, I am ready.”

  • ‘Igbo next to produce president’

Former governor of Abia State and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, has said the Igbo can be sure of producing a president in 2023 if they support the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Kalu who urged the Igbo to wake up and learn from their past political experience, stated that the future of the Igbo in Nigerian politics is brighter now  with the APC than it was in the past.

Kalu who spoke in Umuahia, the state capital,  maintained that producing an Igbo president is a task every true Igbo indigene must identify with and the APC is the best platform to achieve the dream.

He said, “The future of Ndigbo is brighter today in APC. Once Buhari finishes his second tenure, I’m assuring you that either I or any other Igbo man stands a better chance of becoming the president of Nigeria. The right thing to do is to work for the presidency.

“We don’t need any other thing but the office of the president. If you see what I have done in our villages as governor you will know what will happen if somebody like me becomes the president, you know that the entire Nigeria will be developed.

“The future is very bright and Ndi Igbo will enjoy being in APC. That is why we are working very hard to win the Anambra State election and will win the state.

“It is possible to have Orji Kalu in Aso rock, if am alive and in good health. I’m very capable to be president because I understand macro and micro economics of Nigeria, I don’t even see any Nigerian more capable than I’m to run for the office and work for the people’’.

He disclosed that the APC led government is already reconstructing the Uzuakoli/ Bende Ohafia road in the State through his intervention.

“When I was governor I was busy maintaining that road, it is a State Government road. But when I left office it was over looked and the road became deplorable.

“So I appealed to the federal government for an intervention on that road and they are doing rehabilitation work now.

“The rehabilitation is not being done by any member of the nation al assembly; it was by my request.  I told the federal authorities that I can’t go to my village anymore and I’m a member of the ruling party, because I had once spent over five hours on the road because of its deplorable state.

“I showed Mr. President the pictures and he ordered for immediate rehabilitation of the road.

“We are doing the road to help the people, so that our people can be happy and stop working on their vehicles all the time. That’s what good governance is all about,” Kalu said.

The ex- governor added he tarred almost all the lanes in Umuahia, some roads in Aba to make life easier for people, saying  “it is just that people have refused to acknowledge what is right and good and unless Abians come up to speak the truth we might not see a better day, because they cannot hide the truth.

“When I was here as governor I gave free education, I gave free medical services, I built roads, and paid workers. Paying salaries was a sacrifice I made to help our people.

“It looked like it was an easy thing, but people have realised that it was not an easy job; it takes a man with a high level of discipline to be able to do it.

“It take a good manager and administrator to achieve that and it is really open today and people can see the difference.”

  • Real reasons Gov Okorocha ERECTED Zuma’s statue – Imo Chief of Staff

Real reasons Gov Okorocha ERECTED Zuma’s statue – Imo Chief of Staff

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and Chief of Staff, Imo State Government House, Uche Nwosu, has given reasons the majority of his party members want President Muhammadu Buhari to run again in 2019. According to him, Buhari has done so well that Nigerians still need him to sustain the gains achieved in the last two years, as well as for him to do more. He believes the President has overcome his health challenge which could have been the only encumbrance. In this interview with INNOCENT DURU, he also speaks about the controversial statue erected for South African President Jacob Zuma in Owerri, saying that Governor Rochas Okorocha would soon unveil more statues in the state. Excerpts:

RECENTLY, many APC governors who your boss, Governor Rochas Okorocha is their chairman, gave President Muhammadu Buhari the nod to run again in 2019. But while some of the governors think that Buhari deserves an automatic ticket, the opposition think that he is not fit enough to continue in 2019. What is your take on this?

I support the governors that President Buhari should run in 2019 because I see him as a man who has come to lay a solid foundation upon which other presidents coming after him can build. I said so because it takes somebody like President Buhari to drag the country out of recession. It takes somebody like him to stand firm on the issue of corruption. It takes somebody like him to battle the issue of insecurity in the country. So, I am happy with the idea that he should run in 2019.

Whether he is given an automatic ticket or not, I think what the APC governors, particularly their chairman, wanted to show to the world was that the APC has and respects internal democracy. And they want to demonstrate that Buhari can still win without people thinking that if he runs in the APC primary he will lose. They want to prove that if Buhari runs in our primary he will still win. So, it was meant to demonstrate to the world that APC has internal democracy, unlike some of these other parties where someone is given an automatic ticket. It is only when you are not popular that you will look for automatic ticket. Buhari is very popular. So, we believe that if the APC primary is conducted 100 times, Buhari will win.

Why should the APC clamour for President Buhari to continue in 2019? Does it mean that the party has no alternative?

I don’t really understand what you mean by President Buhari not fit. I wonder if the people saying this have come close to the President to ascertain his fitness. Anybody can fall sick. There is nobody above sickness. The matter is that when you are sick, you go to the hospital to receive treatment and thereafter continue with your work. So, President Buhari was sick and he went to the hospital to receive treatment and he is now fit and has since returned to his job, running like every one of us.

Can you in all sincerity say that President Buhari has delivered enough dividends of democracy to justify his coming back in 2019?

Yes, President Buhari has delivered the dividends of democracy very well. Remember that when we came into power in 2015, the country was going down. Remember what was happening in the North East—most of the local governments had been taken over by Boko Haram. Are we talking about the billions of naira and dollars stolen from the country? Are we talking about corruption which nobody cared what would happen? People thought that corruption was part of the system. Things were going wrong and nobody cared. Now, we should be proud to say that Nigeria has moved from what it used to be to a country that we can call our own. Nigeria’s reputation abroad now is something all of us can be happy with. Before now, when you got to any embassy, you would be ashamed of the green passport. And when you were on the queue, you would see Ghanaians and Cameroonians move pass the immigration in the US, but when it comes to the turn of a Nigerian, they would keep you and ask you so many questions. These are some of the things Buhari has corrected and we are happy about them.

On the issue of recession, some countries go into recession and in two years they are not out of it. Today, Nigeria has come out of recession. This happened so soon because President Buhari has been able to manage the affairs of this country very well. Look at the internally generated revenue from the Federal Inland Revenue, it has gone up to trillions. But before now, all the money went into individuals’ accounts. Or is it the issue of agriculture? Nobody is talking again about foreign rice. If you go to Ebonyi,  Kebbi and even Lagos State and many other parts of the country, they are producing rice, and now the quantity of rice imported into Nigeria has gone down because most families now prefer to eat the local rice.

So if you ask me, President Buhari has done very well. All we need to do as Nigerians is to support him. These are things that had gone bad for many years under the PDP. So we need to support Buhari fully so that the country can regain its lost glory completely. Now, people know that you cannot just dip your hand into the government coffer and think that nothing will happen. Buhari therefore is the only one who can strengthen the gains achieved and do more.

How much of these dividends of democracy have come to the Igbo? Because the people of the South East still believe they have not got their due under the Buhari administration.

When it comes to the issue of infrastructure and dividends of democracy to the South East, let me start from Agriculture. I know that Buhari, through the Central Bank of Nigeria, has intervened in rice production in Ebonyi State. Ebonyi is one of the states in the South East that is very good in rice production. The Federal Government has rendered some assistance to Ebonyi in rice production. So now, most of the people, including myself, eat Abakaliki rice. Nobody cares about foreign rice any more.

On the issue of roads and other infrastructural facilities, just a few weeks ago, the Vice President told us that the Federal Government had released the sum of N2 billion for the Second Niger Bridge. Remember that this is the same bridge that we have had promises in the years past and nobody was able to do it until Buhari came in. On the issue of roads, if you go through the 2017 budget, you will see that most of the roads in the South East are captured in the budget. Let me give you examples from the one that cuts through my state, the Port Harcourt-Owerri Road, which was started by the Niger Delta Ministry, the Federal Government has promised to bring the contractor back to site to complete the road. Then there is the Aba-Owerri Road; work has commenced on that road. And the Enugu-Onitsha, Enugu-Aba roads are receiving attention from the Federal Government.

When a budget is made, it does not mean that within two or three days, work will commence. It has to go through due process before work will commence. But the assurance the South East should have is that President Buhari will not forget the zone. The President Buhari I know will treat every political zone as one single entity and one country. So, I don’t believe that the South East has not got the dividends of democracy under Buhari.

Even here in Imo State, we never knew that Imo as a state in the South East could have an international cargo airport. If you come to Imo today, the airport is almost 90 per cent completed. It was President Buhari who gave us Imo Cargo Airport. We never had any Airforce Command, but Buhari gave us one. The same with the Army Command School and so many other laudable projects. And it is the same thing in the other states of the South East. So, our people should support President Buhari to be part of the moving train.

APC has been ruling Imo State in the last six years, but it appears the Imo people are not happy. Do you think that the governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has done well in the state?

When you say that people are not happy, I wonder the people who are not happy. Are we talking of many families whose children are enjoying free education from primary to the university level and in the polytechnics and colleges of education? Are we talking about the roads? Are we talking about the hospitals, other infrastructural developments and other things that have come to Imo through Owelle Rochas Okorocha?

I think when a few individuals and those who deep their hands into government coffers, who feed fat on government, who do not have any other job apart from politics make noise because they have access to the press, you yourself can go to the streets of Imo and tell the ordinary people, like Keke riders or market women, that Owelle Rochas Okorocha is not working, and they will tell you that you are a new comer to Imo State. People are happy. Everybody who lives in Imo State is happy with Owelle Rochas Okorocha except those Abuja or Lagos-based politicians or those who are based abroad who never find time to come back home.

Today, Imo State is one of the fastest growing states in Nigeria. Owelle Rochas Okorocha has done very well. Is it the free education, the eight-lane roads, the hospitals, the markets or the new taxi scheme? If you count the projects the governor has done in Imo State, they are more than 1,000. He has achieved what the PDP government could not achieve in 15 years.

So, why is it that controversies are always surrounding Imo, from demolition of structures to building roads to the demolition of the controversial Eke Ukwu Owerri and the erection of the statue of the South African President, Jacob Zuma?

To make an omelet, you have to break an egg. And for you to get the yoke, you must break an egg. No leader in any part of this world would allow himself to fail. And to succeed as a leader, you must take the bull by the horn. If you are a leader and you depend on sentiments or what people would say, you will never achieve anything. Owelle Rochas Okorocha is the man who has taken the bull by the horn.

Let me start with the issue of road dualisation. Today, people are happy that we have eight-lane roads in Imo State. It can only take a governor with a vision, a governor with a strong mind to clear the shanties on the roads and make Imo roads eight lanes. Before now, Imo State capital was like a mini-local government where the only roads you could pass through were either Douglas Road, Wethdral Road or Bank Road. But today, we have the First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Inland roads connecting the new and old Owerri. We also have the Akachi Road. It takes a man of courage to achieve that.

And let me correct an erroneous impression; the structures demolished were only illegal structures. There was no building built on the right place that was demolished except that person had encroached on the road or government lane. So, the demolition was carried out in the right direction, and those demolitions were mainly on shanties which gave way to the eight-lane roads.

On the issue of President Zuma, I think people misunderstood the coming of President Zuma, the statue and the rest of it. Owelle Rochas Okorocha did not bring President Zuma to Imo State for a jamboree. What Okorocha brought was South African economy. Some people do not know the importance of a sitting president visiting a state, not a country. By the coming of the South African President, Imo businessmen can now travel to South Africa and do business there based on our relationship with President Zuma. The President Zuma Foundation is working hand in hand with the Rochas Foundation College. Most of our children from Imo State who want to study in the universities in South Africa from the Rochas Foundation College can now go to South Africa easily to study. The South African cargo plane will land in Imo State very soon because the South African Airline has now signed an agreement with the Imo State Government so that they can be part of this Imo Cargo Airport when it becomes functional.

But some people don’t see all these. What they see is the visit of President Zuma. And when you talk of having the statue of President Zuma, it take a wise man who knows how to get something to act fast. There is this saying that when you want to catch a butterfly, you also fly and dance like a butterfly. For Christ sake, South Africa is not a small country. For you to get something from South Africa, you need to lure them into the state. So what Governor Okorocha did was to simply bring South Africa into Imo State, so that when Imo people go to South Africa they are warmly received there. So I believe that by that singular act, Okorocha has taken Imo State to the next level of business opportunities.

Remember that the President of Ghana also visited Imo State and stayed for two days. The Prime Minister of Zambezi came to Imo State and stayed for two days too. I have not seen in the history of the Federal Republic of Nigeria where a president will move straight to a state on a private visit. I think I give it to him; he is a man with good vision and heart. It will take only my governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, to do this.

But most Imo people believe that it was not wise to use a whopping N520 million to erect the statue of a foreign president. The money, they say, could be used to pay teachers and pensioners in the state. How do you react to that?

I laugh at the people who say this. So, looking at a shrewd administrator and businessman like Owelle Rochas Okorocha, you think he can spend N500 million on a statue? This is laughable because I know my governor very well. This is a governor who, for him to bring out N100,000 for a project, he must first go to the place to see it. We are talking about Rochas, not about somebody who is used to swinging money around. Rochas is very prudent with money. Rochas would rather say let me go and stand there so that you can give me the N500 million and I use the money to build more roads and schools. By merely looking at the statue, you can guess how much it is worth. You can get an artist and ask him how much it takes to erect that kind of statue.

There are other statues standing next to that of Zuma. When is the governor going to unveil them?

I think on the day they will come for their merit awards. In Imo State, we are giving the highest awards to some of those people. Like Dr Alex Ekwueme got his own and his statue is there. The President of Ghana received his own, so his own statue is there. Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe’s statue is there. His is a posthumous award which we are going to give to his family.

What we want to do is to create a space in Imo State where the entire country or world can come to read history about these people. Not only that, we also have the hall of fame for them. When you enter the hall of fame, you can read everything about Dr Alex Ekwueme, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, the present president of Ghana, President Zuma and others. So, it is not just about erecting a statue but what we are achieving with it; the end result. So, there is wisdom in what His Excellency is doing.

Governor Okorocha is servicing out his tenure in 2019, but rumour has it that he is preparing you to take over from him. How true is this?

People will always say that he is preparing one person or the other. As far as I am concerned, Owelle Rochas Okorocha is the governor of Imo State until His Excellency makes known who he wants to support. And as you know, he is a man that is full of wisdom, so he is not going to handpick somebody by saying you come and be governor. It is going to be a democratic process where his own people will say, ‘Your Excellency, this is the person we want to replace you.’

So, many people don’t know him very well. They think that he is that kind of person that will just handpick somebody and impose him on the people. That is not the Owelle. My governor will first of all seek the opinion of the people, especially the party members and Imolites to know who they want to be their next governor. When this is done, we will now know whether it is me or any other person. For now, I don’t think the governor has made his mind known to anybody on this. We are still working for Governor Rochas Okorocha and Imo State.

  • ‘Igbo next to produce president’

  • Stop politicising arrest of corrupt politicians – APC tells PDP

Stop politicising arrest of corrupt politicians – APC tells PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday told those who care to listen that the party’s major concern was how to win elections and now the arrest of corrupt politicians, asking those who have issues with invitation and arrest of former political office holders to go deal with such issues rather than politicizing such arrest.

The party also dismiss rumors making the round that it was deploying soldiers to rig the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra state, saying the party was planning to win the election fair and square.

Addressing newsmen at the party national Secretariat, National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi said those claiming that the APC was planning to hoard 50 members of the main opposition party, the PDP into jail should finish Nigerians with the names of such people who have been pencilled down for such treatment.

He said a couple of former governors were invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for questioning on their financial conduct during their tenure in office, adding that one way to preempt such investigation was to come up with a claim that there is a threat to muscle the opposition.

According to him, “I have said that as political parties, we don’t arrest and if anybody has issues with the power to arrest, the person should go and deal with it instead of politicizing it. We are concerned with the art of winning elections as a party not arresting anybody.”

Speaking on the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra state, Abdullahi said “whenever we go into primaries as in the case of Anambra where we have 12 aspirants, there will always be one level of acrimony or the other no matter the effort you make. But what we have done was to get everybody to rally round the candidate.

“Yes, there will be residual issues, but I can tell you that all of us are working together and have all lined up behind our candidate Dr Tony Nwoye to ensure that we win the election in Anambra.

“The issue of people not working together does not arise including the Minister of Labour who is the leader of the party in the state. All of us are working together and we have the National Campaign chairman in the person of Bauchi state governor. Up until yesterday, we were still meeting to strategize and of course, you know that the President will be visiting the grand finale of the campaign.

“So, all of us are working to ensure victory because Anambra is very important to the party and we understand the significance of the Anambra election. So, we are pulling everything together and everybody is working together to ensure success in Anambra.”

While dismissing the rumoured deployment of soldiers to rig the elections, he said “We believe strongly that the speculation of APC deploring soldiers to rig Anambra election is just a mere rumour because there is no evidence to that and if anybody tells you that the party is planning to deploy Civil Defence, police, soldiers or whatever to do anything in Anambra, tell the person to provide the evidence.

“We are planning to win the election fair and square and if you are following the campaign going on, you will know the impact that our candidate is making. The incumbent will naturally be jittery and when a candidate is jittery the first thing he will do is to turn around and accuse the ruling party of planning to rig or whatever.

“We are not going to rig the election. We have won elections since we came to power as a national party and as a ruling party. We have equally lost elections. We lost the election in Osun and if we have soldiers and police and whatever to mobilize why didn’t we do it. We have lost a couple of House of Representatives elections and couple of Senate elections.

“So, the speculation that we are planning to rig the election does not hold waters. Unless they have credible evidence that this is what we are planning to do. But to make this kind of allegation is not what we should dwell on too much.”

On the 2018 budget presented to the National Assembly, Abdullahi said “We are delighted that the budget was presented and as we can see there is a renewed commitment to invest in economically productive sectors in the coming year. I have read a couple of analysis of the budget and noticed that yes, there are different options. But we as a party are happy with the budget presented and the promises by the National Assembly to give the budget speedy assessment.

“We are very happy also that they have promised a speedy review of the budget and the passage as soon as possible. What excites us most was that the kind of rancour and acrimony that attended the previous budget given the relationship between the legislature and the executive is not going to happen again.

“The relationship has been mended. We are now confident as a party that the two arms of government will work smoothly and closely going forward. We are happy that we are going to start the new year in a more harmonious and coordinated manner.”

  • Keeping APC united

Prior to the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) last Tuesday, it was difficult for many political watchers to predict how the party will stand at the end of the meeting.

With the scenario that played out before the meeting,  many had feared that the party may come out of the meeting more divided with the centre unable to hold the various units together.

One of the scenarios was the series of protest marches at the party’s national secretariat, demanding the sack of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party headed by its National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

The members of the Save APC and Democracy Youth Vanguard, who stormed the Secretariat with various placards, had caused a gridlock disrupting free flow of vehicular and human movements.

The angry youths had demanded the audit of the party’s books and the cancellation of the non-elective convention.

They also wanted changes in the party to boost its full support for the anti-corruption fight of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Peter Oyewole, who was the leader of the group, had said: “Since 2015, the budget of APC has not been made public. Since 2015, the ruling party has not held a single meeting.

“These are enough to remove the National Chairman. We demand the removal of Oyegun now. We are also saying enough is enough to imposition of candidates at all levels by Oyegun-led NWC.

“Because in any party where there is imposition, there cannot be fairness. Any party where there is imposition, there cannot be equity. The imposition in APC today is just rubbishing the anti-corruption war of President Buhari.

“If Odigie-Oyegun is not removed within the next one month, the APC youths will picket this national secretariat and make it a no-go area to everybody. The staff, the officials and even the security staff will be chased out of the Secretariat and none of them will be allowed to come in here.”

“The man (Oyegun) cannot manage success. Since 2015 that the APC won the presidential election, tell me a single NEC meeting that has been held? This man cannot galvanise support for the President.

“What we are saying is that if Oyegun continues like this we are going to have imposition at all levels in APC come 2019. This is a democracy whereby many wings can grow up to push for the interest of many.” he added

Another youth’s group within the party, named APC Youths Solidarity Forum said the party should find ways of improving its finances and should address the anxieties being felt by various party stalwarts.

According to a letter to the President, signed by the forum’s convener,  Danesi Momoh Prince, he called for strengthening of the APC, noting that  it remains the only legitimate platform to obtain political power in the country.

He said: “The President needs to take more than a passing interest in the activities of the party and ensure that the party is supreme. There have been alleged schemes to remove the party’s national chairman from office because of his perceived loyalty to Mr. President.

“The alleged plot is aimed at achieving sinister political ends in the lead up to the 2019 general elections. If the plan succeeds, it will allow the sponsors install their stooges and hijack the party in the lead up to the election. This is a red flag that the President must take seriously and thwart.”

On appointments, he said: “Many Federal Government boards, agencies and parastatals appointees who were put in office by the immediate-past administration are still in office. They are not loyal to the APC which they feel had no hand in their emergence.

“There is need to quickly review these appointments and replace them with qualified APC members. Vacant positions should thereafter be quickly filled with APC members who feel frustrated because they seem not to have benefited from the victory of their party.” he stated

But the intervention of President Buhari and founding fathers of the party was able to calm down the tension in the party.

The National Leader of the APC and former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu had met behind closed door at the Presidential Villa, Abuja with the President last week Monday evening.

Tinubu in the night of the same day along with Chief Bisi Akande also attended the APC caucus meeting with the President at the Aso Rock.

Tinubu told journalists after the closed door meeting “In the journey of democracy you are going to have twists and turns, you are going to have conflicts.

“Conflicts resolution mechanisms is inbuilt on how you handle your party and the governance and the party are joined by the hips.” he said

On whether the APC was still on course, Tinubu said “Can you go back to the history of 16  years of the PDP? APC government is on course and will remain on course and we will remain focused to those necessary things about development, welfare and progress of our people.

“Its not easy to face the challenges and the well that was dug, sinkhole that we inherited. But we are sorting that one out gradually so few steps we will find happiness and development in the future of our country,” he stated

Earlier in the afternoon, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, Nigerian Governors Forum Chairman and Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari and Odigie-Oyegun had also met behind closed doors with the President in Aso Rock.

The APC caucus on that Monday night passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of the party.

Yari said, “This meeting shows our unity in the party, shows our strength and our commitment to the party and to Nigerians.”

On his part, Senator Bukar Abba-Ibrahim, said that the outcome of the meeting, dismissed the speculation that it was convened to remove the leadership of the APC.

He said: “You remember, you saw it in some of the newspapers. That our crises had deepened, APC is going to break, there is a plan to kick out our national chairman – none of these things happened.

“It is a big family reunion and we are all happy and this party is going to dominate the Nigerian political space for a very long time to come. I don’t want to predict any number of years.’” he said  ’

All the series of meetings leading to the caucus meeting resulted in no small measure to the smooth NEC meeting recorded on Tuesday.

Not only was it hitch-free, most governors and other party chieftains backed President Muhammadu Buhari candidature in the 2019 presidential election even as the NEC ruled out automatic ticket for any candidate.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi had said that the only motion taken was to pass a vote of confidence on the President.

On aggrieved members, Dogara had said: “I don’t think that you can find any family that is as large as the APC family without some squabbles. No such family exists in the whole world and if there are disagreements, they are okay because without disagreements, you cannot even move forward.”

The President at the NEC meeting had said “If we keep united and rise above petty or personal quarrels we will surely achieve the desired CHANGE in the country.”

The Senate President Bukola Saraki after the President’s dinner for National Assembly leadership last Tuesday night also pledged the cooperation of the National Assembly for the executive towards better administration of the country.

He said “The meeting was to welcome him to show our gratitude that he has come back healthy and continue to assure him that we will continue to cooperate with the executive and also to acknowledge the role we played while he was away that brought stability.

“We thank all the members for the patriotic approach they handled the administration’s affairs in his absence,’’ he said.

It is hoped that the new harmony in the ruling party will stand the test of time and go beyond the 2019 general elections.

Also, cooperation between the executive arm of government and the National Assembly will go a long way in meeting the yearnings of the people and achieving sustainable development in the country.

  • We have witnessed real change – Buhari

We have witnessed real change – Buhari

Contrary to public outcry, President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said that the country has witnessed real change between 2015 and now.

The President made this known after the National Executive Council meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in Abuja.

Buhari said the country has seen a regular supply of petroleum products, a successful Presidential Fertilizer Initiative; & TSA Implementation. “This change is real.

“The APC is proud of our achievements in the last 2 years: the fight against Boko Haram, Agric Revolution, Improved Power, Peace in the Delta.

“Internationally, Nigeria’s prestige and credit-worthiness have gone up. We have regained our respect on the International stage.

“Today, the World Bank released its latest Business Rankings report. We moved up 24 places & are one of the world’s 10 most improved countries,” he said.

President Buhari further noted that it is sometimes easier to manage failure than to manage success—especially the kind of big success the APC achieved in 2015.

“I said last year that we would shortly reconstitute the Boards of Parastatals. I regret the fact that we’ve not done so, for many reasons.

“Nevertheless, we will not rest on these achievements. There are still quite a number of challenges before us, and we are well aware of these.

“I know that our supporters are also very eager for these Board appointments to be announced. By God’s grace, they will be announced soon.

“Regarding concerns about the representation of our supporters in the Federal Government, rest assured that this is also being looked into.

“We will expand the Federal Executive Council to bring in more people and fresh ideas, for the ultimate benefit of the people of Nigeria.

“Our Change, the Change that the APC represents, is here to stay. We will stay united as a Party & continue to work for the good of Nigeria.

“I have a long list of people I would like to thank: our Party leadership, the leadership of the National Assembly, our State Governors.

“I must, therefore, thank all stakeholders, as well as a number of non-APC members who have consistently risen above petty partisan interests,” he summed.

  • 2018: Ekiti indigenes strategise to take over Government House

2018: Ekiti indigenes strategise to take over Government House

Indigenes of Ekiti South Senatorial District of Ekiti State, South West Nigeria are making serious arrangements to ensure that one of their own takes charge at the Government house come 2018.

Speaking on the plans, a governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, Dr. Makanjuola Akindele Owolabi stated that in the 21 years of Ekiti State’s existence, it has never had any son or daughter of Ekiti South Senatorial Zone as governor, despite having more local governments than any of the other zones.

Dr. Owolabi from Aisegba, Gboyin Local Government while addressing journalists at the weekend at the Lagos Airport said Ekiti South Senatorial Zone has six local governments while the others comprising of Ekiti North and Central zones have five each, noting that the Central part of the state has ruled the State on four different occasions while Ekiti North has also ruled on three different occasions.

Owolabi lamented that Ekiti South has never been in the saddle of power till date whereas non-indigenes from other States have administered Ekiti State for three years and four months in total.

“Ekiti South Senatorial Zone is not an outcast. We are not helpless. We do not have to wait for power to be transferred to us. We have all it takes to rule Ekiti State through constitutional, electoral, judicious, justifiable, legal and fair means. We are being made to believe that power can only be bequeathed to us. Are we incompetent or incapable? Are we created to be perpetual spare tyres?” the APC chieftain stated.

According to Owolabi, under natural justice, the Southern part of the state should have been competing for its third or fourth chance in power by now, stressing that as at 2015 INEC voters’ register, the State has a total of 815,406 spread across the senatorial zones while Ekiti South has the highest number of Senatorial Zones with the second highest number of registered voters of 277,757 which constitutes 34.05%.

He said that from the total of 416 delegates from all the Local Governments 26 executives from each Local Government, Ekiti Senatorial Zone has 156 delegates representing 37.5%.

He said: “We have 29 State Excos and 1 national delegate. These delegates cannot take away the superiority of delegates from Ekiti South since the 29 State Excos will have a proportionate number from South too. Ekiti South Senatorial Zone is, therefore, the ‘queen damsel’ of the state politics most especially in deciding who clinches the governorship ticket to become the flag bearer of any political party at the primaries”.

According to Owolabi, Ekiti South Senatorial Zone with all its politically intimidating statistics and electoral strength both in determining a candidate and a winner has not been fairly and justifiably carried along in the power play of Ekiti State in the past 21 years.

“We, therefore, pleaded, in the spirit of fairness, equity, justice and democratic principle of power rotation ,amongst confederating entities, that it is only fair and just for the sons and daughters of Ekiti South Senatorial zone to be maximally supported for the governorship of the State for the first time in 21 years.

“We have been brothers in progress. We have been supportive of our brothers in the North and Central Zones all these years. We are of the same origin. We are all descendants of Oduduwa who is well known for fairness and justice. What we have in abundance for our brothers from the other Senatorial Zones are love and trust. We look forward to the support of our brothers from North and Central just as we have always been doing to them this past twenty-one (21) years”, Dr Owolabi said.
