LASIEC clears 12 parties for July 22 council polls

Ahead of the July 22 council polls, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) says it has cleared 12 political parties out of the 23 registered for the elections.

Mr Dapo Olatunde, LASIEC’s Director of Publicity, said in a statement that the cleared parties had met the commission’s requirements for the polls and also presented candidates for validation.

Olatunde listed the parties as the All Progressives Congress (APC), Action Alliance (AA), Alliance for Democracy (AD), Labour Party (LP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Accord Party.

Others are Kowa Party, National Action Council (NAC) , People’s Democratic Movements (PDM) ,United Democratic Party (UDP)

He said the names of the validated candidates had been displayed at the commission’s headquarters for observation by party members and members of the public.

Meanwhile, the commission has begun a three-day “Train -the-Trainer”course for its electoral officers across the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas.

According to Olatunde, the training, facilitated by the International Foundation for Electoral System (IFES), was to equip ad-hoc staff engaged for the July 22 elections.

IFES is a United States-based organisation committed to the deepening of democracy and international best standards in election management.

The organization operates in more than 100 countries and is supported by USAID.

  • Group condemn Kanu’s call to boycott Anambra guber election

Group condemn Kanu’s call to boycott Anambra guber election

More condemnation have continued to trail call by the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Mr Nnamdi Kanu on the people of Anambra to boycott the Nov. 18 governorship election in the state.

The stakeholders in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) described the call as an attempt by Kanu to derail democracy in the state and expose it to anarchy.

Chief Sam Oraegbunam, the Chairman, Hope Democratic Party (HDP), Anambra chapter said though his call for the restructuring of Nigeria was genuine, he mustn’t use it to cause confusion in the state.

Oraegbunam said there was the need for economic restructuring, and empowerment of the states and regions to ensure even development of the country.

He said time had come for us to look beyond oil that, which was causing confusion in the country.

“Nnamdi Kanu has done enough to draw the attention of Nigeria and the world to the type of equity in the country and the plight of the Igbos.
“But in terms of boycott of elections and issuing datelines for referendum, I think it is an overstatement on his part.

“If Anambra does not hold election in Nigeria in November, it means that there will be a vacuum and what happens to the state in terms of administration.

According to him, Kanu is from a state and there is an elected governor there, so he should allow us have our election because we are still a component of Nigeria.

“My advice is that Kanu should consult, listen more and talk less, there are others who share his point of view, he should not derail democracy in Anambra,”he said.

Also speaking, Chief Jude Emecheta, the National Chairman of Willie Obiano Support Group (WOSG) said Kanu’s call for boycott of the election was uncalled for.

Emecheta said such call was why the South East poorly participated in the 2006 population census and the “result is what we are suffering today’’.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) chieftain said Kanu’s call to boycott Anambra election was capable of plunging the state into political crisis.

“This call is not needed, it is undemocratic and it is a show of youthful exuberance. That is why sometimes I get worried about issue of empowering the youth.

“We have a supreme council of IPOB elders who should speak for the group; Kanu is head of publicity by virtue of being the head of Radio Biafra.

“We are just talking about restructuring, we have not articulated our demand in that restructure and there is need for the Igbo man to be fully in the Nigerian project.’’

He said that the statement did not come from the hierarchy of the party; “we know those we can take seriously on Anambra elections’’.

APGA condoles Gov. Obiano over mother’s death

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has expressed sympathy with Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra over the death of his mother, Mrs Christiana Obiano.

A statement by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, signed by APGA National Publicity Secretary, Mr Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, urged Obiano to bear the irreparable loss and find solace in God.

The statement described the governor’s late mother as a good woman and devout Christian.

“The National Chairman, Dr Victor Ike Oye and members of NWC of APGA express our condolence to His Excellency, Governor Willie Obiano and members of his family, over the death of his mother.

“May the good Lord give you and the entire family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

“Mama in her lifetime was a devout and committed christian and a very active member of the Catholic Women Organisation.

“May her gentle soul find eternal peace in the bosom of our Lord,” it said.

NAN reports that the death of Obiano’s mother was announced on Saturday by Mr Tony Nnacheta, Commissioner for Information and Communication Strategy in Anambra.

He said that Christiana Obiano died on June 2.

  • Kanu: APGA commends FG

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has expressed satisfaction over the release of Mr Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Dr Victor Oye, National Chairman of the party told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Monday that the party was happy that the rule of law had been observed on the matter.

He described the freedom of Kanu as long expected, observing that although the bail conditions were tough, they were fully met.

“APGA is happy with the bail granted Mr Nnamdi Kanu and his eventual release from prison, this development we must say is long overdue.

“It is also good that at last rule of law is being observed and it is a step in the right direction.

“However, we are not comfortable with the bail conditions which the party views as stringent and punitive,’’ he said.

The APGA chairman decried the rising agitation and tension on the country, insisting that the situation could not be controlled by force but through strict adherence to principles of true federalism.

He said such agitations might persist in as much as the crucial national questions that gave rise to them remain unaddressed.

“All we need is justice, equitable distribution of national wealth, implementation of the Federal Character provisions in the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“Once these things are in place, then ethnocentric interests and agitation will be drastically reduced,’’ he said.

Kanu was arrested in October 2015 over his activities as the anchor of Radio Biafra and had been in prison since then until he regained freedom on April 28 after the conditions of bail granted him were met.

  • We don’t have leadership crisis -APGA

We don’t have leadership crisis -APGA

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has condemned the attempts by people it called detractors to create leadership crisis in the party when there was none.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Awka that there was no crisis in the party.

Obi-Okoye, who reacted to the report of purported delegates meeting of the party in Owerri, Imo, said it was untrue.

He said APGA got a hint that some expelled members of the party wanted to meet with a former Imo gubernatorial candidate of the party, Chief Martin Agbaso, but were stopped following a security report.

“There is a report making the rounds that some people purporting to be members of APGA met in Owerri to woo a former member of APGA to be their leader; this is not true.

“We got wind of the meeting about two weeks ago and after reporting to the Directorate of State Security (DSS), they invited Agbaso who disowned them.

“Agbaso told the DSS he did not have knowledge of their meeting and as such, said the meeting did not hold,’’ Obi-Okoye told NAN.

“We condemn this move to create problem for our party which is the most peaceful, united, coherent and stable political party at the moment under the leadership of Dr Victor Oye.

“For the purpose of emphasis, Chief Martin Agbaso is a PDP member because there is no record available from the national down to the ward levels that he has returned to APGA.’’

Obi-Okoye warned those causing confusion in the party to desist as APGA would use every legal means to stop them from issuing reports that were misleading.

Reacting, Agbaso told NAN that there had been overtures on him from several quarters to work for APGA again.

The former candidate of APGA in Imo said that he represented the dejected, the disenfranchised, the marginalised which the party stood for and could not have abandoned the party.

He confirmed that he joined the PDP at a time because of the prevailing circumstances then but did not leave APGA.

Agbaso said that he had not told anybody that he was accepting to serve the party in any capacity but would make a public statement soon.

“The truth is that people felt bad when I left APGA to join PDP and told them that I did not leave in anger but something came up at that time and I wanted to win for APGA.

“I represent those who are concerned about disenfranchised people, who do not have access to good life, educated unemployed youths and unempowered women and people who yearn for good governance and that is what APGA is all about.

“If you a member of APGA today, you are APGA for life until all those issues APGA stands for are addressed.

“There has been consistent call from all strata of APGA and across the country on me to come and work for the party and I told them I will participate in the activities at the appropriate time.

“I have not told anybody that I am accepting any responsibility but I will respond to all that in a public statement, I have always said that I will do so at the appropriate time,’’ he said.

  • UPP, HDP flay appointment of LG transition committees in Anambra

Two political parties have condemned the appointment of caretaker committees into the 21 local government councils and 326 electoral wards in Anambra by Gov. Willie Obiano.

The parties, United Progressives Party (UPP) and Hope Democratic Party (HDP), gave their condemnation of the appointments in interviews with the News Agency Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Awka.

NAN reports that Obiano appointed the transition committees and councillors on March 29, to take over the affairs at the councils which has been run by the Head of Services at the various councils for a while now.

The Chairman of UPP in Anambra, Dr Evans Igwilo, told NAN that the appointments were not in the spirit of the constitution of Nigeria.

Igwilo said he did not know what could have informed the appointment of caretaker committees just when the Anambra governorship election was around the corner.

He wondered why Obiano who is a product of democratic election would not allow elections to be conducted in the councils.

“Gov. Obiano has not done the right thing in this matter; I do not know what he is afraid of or wants to gain by appointing caretaker chairmen for the councils.

“Unfortunately, these are some of the negative indices that will work against him because the people of Anambra have been yearning for this election.

“The UPP condemns these appointments and call for elections, this is a product of bad advisers, if the Federal Government decides to appoint caretaker committees in the state, Obiano could not have been a governor,” he said.

Also, Sam Oragbunam, Chairman of Hope Democratic Party (HDP), described the appointments of the caretaker committee’s members by Obiano as sign of desperation for second term.

Oragbunam said the refusal of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) led government in Anambra conduct polls at the council was because of the allocation accruing to them.

“I see these appointments as desperation for second term but it will actually work against them.

“The appointment and swearing in was done in the night; so, it shows that APGA believes that the appointments will be necessary to deliver the governor for a second term in office.

“It is all to the detriment of democracy and the people, the party in power in Anambra has abused the trust and confidence bestowed on them, successively they have not showed willingness to conduct elections.

“Although Obiano sent a list of nominees for the Anambra State Election Commission board, the election itself was not provided for in the budget, so they are not just ready for it because of the money accruing to the councils,” he said.

But defending the appointments, Chief Jude Emecheta, an APGA chieftain, hailed Obiano for ensuring that quality people were at the councils to pilot their affairs pending when elections were conducted.

Emecheta who is the National Chairman of Obiano Support Group (OSG), dismissed the notion of the opposition that the governor was not keen in conducting elections at the councils.

He noted that part of the evidence was the list of ANSIEC board members he sent to the House of Assembly for confirmation, assuring that the elections would still hold.

He, however, decried the litigations that have trailed the membership list, urging the litigants to withdraw their suits to enable the House screen and approve the board members.

“I must commend Obiano for appointing the caretaker committees; the councils must be run and it is not true that APGA or the governor does not want or are afraid of election.

“The list of ANSIEC board members before the House is a matter in the courts and this not healthy, let those people withdraw the suit and allow the process to go on because they are credible nominees.”

The Acting Chairman of Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in the state, Mrs. Oby Okafor, said she was not in the state when the appointments were made.

Okafor, who is also the chairman of Advanced Congress for Democrats (ACD), said IPAC would not make a statement on the matter until they meet to discuss it.

She said the appointment could be because there was no budget for elections in the 2017 appropriation bill and expressed the hope that the council elections could still hold before the governorship.

According to her, the local governments will not be devoid of leadership, some people must be there while waiting for election.

“Local government election is good, we want it, but the election is not in the budget, if it was contained in the budget and the government did not do it, we would have started agitating,” she said.

Contacted, the Chairman of APGA in Anambra, Chief Norbert Obi, declined comment, saying he was at a burial ceremony.

NAN reports that Anambra has been without elected council officials since January 2016.

  • APGA appoints new officers, endorses Obiano for second term

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has appointed five new national officers to replace those expelled in Dec. 2016.

The party made this known in a communiqué issued at the end of its National Working Committee (NWC) meeting, in Awka on Friday.

An APGA NEC meeting had, in December, expelled seven members including Mr Campbell Nzekwe, Chief Ozo Nwabueze (late), Mr Jerry Obasi, Mrs Ezinne Agbagwu, Mr Chucks Nwoga, Mr Terry Godfrey and Okey Okoloagwu.

Mr Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, National Publicity Secretary of APGA who read the communiqué, said that the five new officers were appointed in acting capacity pending their ratification by the National Executive Committee.

“Since nature abhors vacuum, the former members of the NWC that were expelled by the NEC meeting of Dec. 21, 2016 should be replaced.

“To this effect, five NWC members are appointed in acting capacity pending their ratification by the NEC.

“Those appointed are Mr Stephen Nwoga (Lagos), Deputy Organising Secretary, Mrs Elizabeth Nwokocha (Imo), Deputy Financial Secretary and Ms Ada Nwanyanwu (Imo) National Woman Leader.

“Others are Mr Chinedu Nebeife (Enugu) National Youth Leader and Mr Uche Nwegbo National Vice Chairman South East,” he said.

Obi-Okoye said that the appointment was with immediate effect, while two remaining vacant national offices would be filled at a later date.

The APGA NWC also passed a vote of confidence on Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra, saying he had recorded landmark achievements in several areas.

The NWC said that the achievements of Obiano include prompt and regular payment of workers’ salaries and pension.

According to the committee, the governor has also made the state one of the most secured in the country and the agricultural hub of West Africa.

They also commended Obiano for his efforts in road construction, rural electrification and for giving N20 million to each community in the state to execute projects of their choice.

“The NWC reaffirms and reiterates its unequivocal commitment to the re-election of Obiano, who has won several outstanding awards, for a second term in office in the Nov. 18 election in the state,” he said.

Meanwhile, the NWC also set up three committees as part of the party’s preparation for the Nov. 18 gubernatorial election in Anambra.

The committees are: Election Strategy Committee, headed by Chief Mike Kwentoh; APGA Electoral Guidelines for Primary Election Committee, headed by Mr Ifeanyi Mbaeri and Party Membership Review Committee headed by Mr Ibrahim Carefor.

The NWC also dispatched a delegation led by the National Chairman, Dr Victor Oye to Abia and another delegation led by Mr Samson Olalere to Lagos to resolve the party’s leadership crisis in both states.

  • Biafra: Release Nnamdi Kanu now – Utomi, Soludo

Biafra: Release Nnamdi Kanu now – Utomi, Soludo

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, and President of the Lagos Business School, Professor Pat Utomi, on Tuesday, demanded the immediate release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The Professors made this known at a media briefing in Abuja under the aegis of the Nzuko Umunna, a group of Igbo professionals.

Similarly, they condemned the alleged killing of IPOB members in the south-east and urged states where the alleged killings took place to set up a panel of inquiry in their various states.

Recall that the pro-Biafra leader was arrested on October 14, 2015, in Lagos and has been held in prison since then, despite various court orders that ruled for his release.

The call for his release followed a series of protests, including that of members of the IPOB in Southeast Nigeria during the inauguration of the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump.

However, in January 2016 ruling, Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court in Abuja had declined to release the detainee on bail.

The court also denied bail to two other pro-Biafra agitators, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, who are facing trial with Kanu.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) had also called for his release, based on the court rulings which granted him bail on three occasions.

The National Chairman of APGA, Mr Victor Oye, asked the government to obey the rule of law in the prosecution of the case.

  • Ebonyi APGA Chairman Suspended

    Ebonyi APGA Chairman Suspended

The gale of suspensions in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) have reached Ebonyi State chapter as the State Working Committee Wednesday suspended the state Chairman, Ricky Okoruka, the Vice Chairman South Ajah Ogbonna and Deputy Chairman, Dr. Emmanuel Edegiri for alleged gross violation of APGA constitution, gross misconduct and anti-party activities.

The suspension was contained in a communique at the end of an emergency meeting of the party in Abakaliki.

In the communique signed by Nweke Harrison, Vice Chairman Central, Omoke Celestine, Assistant Organizing Secretary, Uchenna Mathew, Ex-officio, Onwe Jacinta Women Leader, Ezeobi Peter Treasurer, Olughu Obinna Assistant Financial Secretary and 13 others, the party said Okoruka and the two suspended others continuously supplanted the state secretary and other ecxo members using one Mr. Ajah Ogbonna as Acting state Secretary without recourse to APGA
    constitution.

It therefore set up 7-man committee to look into the allegations leveled against the suspended exco members.

APGA National Deputy Secretary, Chief Jerry Obasi in a telephone interview NAtional Working Committee of the party have unofficially received the report of the suspension.

Mr Obasi, who is Okoruka’s predecessor, said the NWV was awaiting official communication from the state chapter of the party before it will take action on the matter.

It will be recalled that the Anambra state chairman of the party, Nobert Obi was last month suspended by the party.

Chief Obi was suspended by 17 out of the 28 member State working Committee of the party following the recommendations of a disciplinary committee which indicted him of various offences.

Also the State Working committee of Abia state chapter, Rev Austin Ehiemere for gross misconduct and violation of the party rules.

In October, the National Working Committee had suspended the National Chairman of the party, Victor Our for alleged gross misconduct.

The NWC also appointed one Mr Ozo Nwabueze Okafor Acting National Chairman.

The suspensions have led to speculations of gang up and power play against Governor Willie Piano of Anambra State who will be having re-election in 2018.

  • APGA suspends South-East chairman

    APGA suspends South-East chairman

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has suspended its National Vice Chairman (South-East), Mr Ozo Okafor, over alleged anti-party activities.

In a communiqué released in Awka on Thursday, after an emergency meeting of its South-East Working Committee, the party said that Okafor’s activities were considered and found to be against its interest.

    It said that the anti-party activities contravened Articles 21(1) (g) (k) (i) (n) and 22(1) (C) (d) (e) (h) and (h) of APGA’s Constitution as amended.

“Sequel to the self-induced crisis currently instigated by some members of NWC of APGA and spearheaded by National Vice Chairman South-East, Ozo Okafor, we resolve as follows:

“That Ozo Okafor is suspended as a result of glaring anti-party activities, which he has been engaged in and in total breach of Articles 21(1)(g)(k)(i) (n) and 22(1)(C)(d)(e)(h) and (h) of APGA Constitution as amended.

“That we the South-East Working Committee appoint Chief Smart Iheoma as the Acting National Vice Chairman, in addition to his position as Assistant National Publicity Secretary, pending outcome of report of our disciplinary committee,” the communiqué stated.

The party expressed confidence in Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra as the leader of the party and Dr Victor Oye as its National Chairman for their commitment to the advancement of the party.

The communiqué was signed by eight members out of the nine members of the NWC in the zone.

The signatories are Mrs Ocheze Ubani, Woman Leader; Mr Eugene Obi, Financial Secretary; Mr John Iwuala, Organising Secretary and Mr Henry Uzom, Youth Leader.

Others are Mr Alex Ani, Treasurer; Ms Francisca Ogadi, Ex-Officio; Mr Jones Salem, Ex-Officio and Chief Smart Iheoma.

Reacting to his suspension, Okafor told the NAN that the decision was void and not binding on him, saying that he was not aware of the meeting.

He said the Zonal Working Committee lacked the power to suspend him and that he remained a member of the National Working Committee of the party.

“I am not disturbed because they do not have power to sack me.

“I belong to the National Working Committee of APGA; so, it has no bearing on me,’’ he said.
