PDP, APC supporters, join Obasanjo’s movement in Ondo

A ‘third force’ group floated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo under the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) held its inaugural meeting Friday in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

Members who were mainly People’s Democratic Party (PDP) supporters with few aggrieved All Progressives Congress (APC) Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Alliance for Democracy (AD) members came from across the 18 local government areas of the state.

Among them were its Coordinator, Hon.Demola Ijabiyi, Protem Secretary, Oluwarotimi Akintoye (Zadok) Former Deputy Speaker, Dare Emiola, Former PDP State Chairmen, Ebenezer Alabi and Biyi Poroye, Dr Dare Bada, Former Mimiko’s aide, Sunday Menukuro, and Kehinde Alabi.

It also included APC chieftains, Jimi Adekanle (JAF) and Mrs Kehinde Adeniran (kk) and others.

Addressing the gatherings, Ijabiyi said the forum was not a political party yet, but a mass movement to determine how Nigerians would be salvaged from the bondage of the discredited politicians in the APC and PDP.

He explained that the platform made up of various groups and tendencies would constitute a new policy order, urging every Nigerian to embrace the Coalition.

According to Ijabiyi “APC and PDP are vessels of darkness, we are bringing people to light, as nobody will like to remain in darkness, there is the need to liberate ourselves  from the bondage of these exploiters, who have no solution to the problems of the country.

The Coordinator who is an ally of Chief Obasanjo said “For now, we are not a political party, but after collating the movement as a formidable mass movement of people in all sectors of life, the decisions of leaders of the Coalition will metamorphose into a political party”.

He noted that already there were several movements coming up that would align with this coalition to achieve the desired goals.

Ijabiyi said the youths would form the largest component of those to lead the movement and determine their leaders at various levels, stressing that there is no way the present precarious situation in the country will be allowed to remain persistent without seeking best alternative.

    AD chieftain lauds President Buhari

Mr Josiah Ogungbemi, a chieftain of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), has commended President Mohammadu Buhari over the sack of Abdulrasheed Maina, the former chairman, Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms.

Ogungbemi gave the commendation in an interview  in Ibadan on Tuesday.

According to him, the order for immediate disengagement of Maina would strengthen the confidence Nigerians had on Buhari’s ability to fight corruption.

He, however, urged the president to ensure that all accomplices in the Maina’s reinstatement were sanctioned.

”Every patriotic Nigerian will be happy about the directive for the sack of Maina because it further proves that President Buhari means the ongoing anti-corruption crusade.

”The reinstatement of the former pension boss who had been declared wanted by the EFCC since 2015, clearly shows that some unpatriotic Nigerians are behind the scene,’’ he said

Ogungbemi called on EFCC to do the needful on Maina’s case for other corrupt-minded public servants to turn a new leaf.

Buhari, on Monday, ordered the immediate disengagement of Maina from the federal service.

The president also demanded a full report of the circumstances of Maina’s reinstatement and posting to the Ministry of Interior.

Maina, who was  appointed by the former president Goodluck Jonathan in 2010, was alleged to have connived with others to misappropriate N100 billion in 2012.

He was subsequently arraigned in 2015 by the EFCC, after declaring him wanted.

Anambra guber poll: AD did not submit candidates names before deadline – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) has said that the Alliance for Democracy ( AD ) did not submit necessary forms and details of its candidates for Anambra governorship election before the deadline for submission.

INEC Director of Publicity and Voter Education, Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi disclosed this in an interview on Monday in Abuja.

The AD had on Wednesday, in a letter written to INEC by its factional National Chairman, Alhaji Ismail Ayodele, said that the names of its candidates were omitted from the list of contestants in the Anambra governorship poll.

INEC had on Wednesday published list of 37 political parties and their candidates for the Nov. 18 governorship election.

Osaze-Uzzi added that from the commission’s record the National Chairman of AD was Chief Joseph Avazi, and not Ayodele.

“The party did not make a submission of the necessary forms and list of their candidates before the close of work on the last day for submission.

“From our records, Ismaila Ayodele is the National Treasurer of the party, not its National chairman.

“National Chairman is Chief Joseph Avazi,” Osaze-Uzzi said.

The party according to the letter listed Nze Valentine Favour Onwuka and his running mate Chijioke Onyekaonwu, as the names of its candidates submitted to INEC for the election.

The party according to Ayodele complied with Sections 85 and 87 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) in notifying INEC of its primary election held on Aug. 22 in Awka, Anambra State.

Ayodele said that the primary was monitored by INEC while the party also collected and submitted forms F001 and F002 to the commission.

“We are therefore surprised that the names of our Governorship and Deputy Governorship candidates did not appear in your published list of candidates for the Election.

“We urge you to use your good offices to rectify this and ensure that the names of our candidates are included in the list of those contesting the election.

“We reaffirm our confidence in the Commission and believe that all eligible candidates for the Governorship Election are given the opportunity to participate in it.

“This is the only way we will deepen our emerging democracy.

“We look forward to the inclusion of our Party’s Candidates names in your list,” the statement reads.

  • Advocates of restructuring are true patriots, says Dickson

Advocates of restructuring are true patriots, says Dickson

The Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, has described persons and groups calling for restructuring as the true patriots of Nigeria.

The governor warned that without changing the current structure, agitations against injustices and imbalances were capable of driving the country to the point of implosion.

The governor insisted that without sitting down to re-examine the existing structure, the country would continue to deal with eruptions of agitations from different ethnic nationalities.

Dickson spoke at the weekend shortly after a special prayer and thanksgiving to mark the 57 independence anniversary of Nigeria and 21st birthday of Bayelsa at the King of Glory Chapel, Government House, Yenagoa.

He said restructuring was part of the issues that informed his brand of politics and drove him to join pressure groups and associations such as the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and the Alliance for Democracy (AD).

He insisted that the aim of persons calling for restructuring was to promote a more stable and more prosperous country.

Maintaining that the existing structure was not sustainable, the governor, who was accompanied to the special prayer session by members of his cabinet including his Deputy, Rear Admiral John Jonah (retd), said restructuring was different from secession.

He said: “There is an urgent national imperative for us to review; maybe people have problems with the word restructuring. But we have to re-examine our nation’s foundation and see how we can make necessary adjustments that will promote a more stable and a more prosperous Nigeria.

“The structure of the country as it is not sustainable. Very often, a number of our leaders misconstrue the call for restructuring to mean secession. No. Those calling for restructuring are the patriots of Nigeria because we want to lay the foundation for a Nigeria that will last for the next 50, 100, 200 years to come.

“Most people forget that in the next 10 or 20 years this country will be one the most populous nations on the face of the earth. You can’t have that kind of high density of human population arguing every day and every time about injustices and imbalances. There will be an implosion.

“So, it is best for us now to have a consensus. If there is any argument at all, it is how do we go about it, not whether we should attempt a restructuring or not. That to me is taken for granted”.

Dickson praised President Muhammadu Buhari’s stance on restructuring saying the President had said he was not opposed to changing the structure to maintain the unity of the country.

He said Bayelsa as a state, the Ijaw nation and the Niger Delta were in support of restructuring adding that issues affecting different parts of the country should be tabled for discussion.

He said:  “I am happy that the President said he is not opposed to restructuring. Our view in this state, our view that I have canvassed all my politics, our view as a state, as Ijaw nation and in the Niger Delta is that we support the call for restructuring so that we can all sit down and agree on how we can readjust our country.

“We are Nigerians. Nobody is more Nigerian than us. Nobody is more Nigerian than a Bayelsan or a Niger Delta man. We are the people that have been sustaining this country for over 60 years.

“Nobody has the right to question our Nigerianess. All we are saying is that we need to all sit down together, work out the issues we can agree on and address them amicably instead of having to deal with agitations every year.

“It is giving this country a bad name and it is stopping Nigeria from realising our God-given potential as the greatest black nation on the face of the earth”.

The Alliance for Democracy ( AD ) said on Sunday that it was stepping up preparations for the Sept. 30 Lagos State House of Assembly bye-election for the Eti-Osa State Constituency.

Mr Kola Ajayi, the State AD Chairman, told NAN in Lagos that following the emergence of Mr Sofe Samson as the party’s candidate for the poll in a recent primary, the party would soon begin its campaign for an “impressive showing” in the bye-election.

AD, formed in 1998 by the late Sen. Abraham Adesanya, ex-Lagos State Gov. Bola Tinubu, now National Leader of the ruling APC and others, was until 2003, a vibrant opposition party in Nigeria under the President Olusegun Obasanjo-led government.

Following a leadership tussle between Sen. Mojisola Akinfenwa and Chief Bisi Akande, erstwhile Osun governor, the Akande faction merged with other opposition parties to form the Action Congress of Nigeria and subsequently, the All Progressives Congress ( APC ).

Ajayi said:“We have conducted our primary during which Mr Sofe Samson emerged by consensus.

“His name has been submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as our flag bearer.

“We have perfected plans for the election and campaign will soon begin and we are sure of doing well.”

According to Ajayi, AD is a popular party in the state with a carefully designed programmes to meet the yearnings of the people.

On calls for the country’s restructuring, the party chairman said: “It is time for the Federal Government to act.”

He said the current structure of the country needed to be tinkered with to “fortify the country and help it meet its aspirations.”

According to Olatunde, the training, facilitated by the International Foundation for Electoral System (IFES), was to equip ad-hoc staff engaged for the July 22 elections.

The organization operates in more than 100 countries and is supported by USAID.

Lagos council poll : Aggrieved PDP members are welcome – AD

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) in Lagos on Monday said it would warmly receive aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) wishing to contest the July 22 council poll on its platform.

The state chairman of the party, Mr Kola Ajayi made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He was reacting to a recent directive by the Moshood-Salvador faction of the PDP telling its aspirants to contest the July 22 council poll on platforms of their choice.

The Publicity Secretary of the faction, Mr Taofik Gani had said the decision was a temporary arrangement to ensure that its aspirants were not denied participation in the poll.

Gani said that the arrangement had become inevitable as reconciliation with the Segun Adewale-led group for the party to unite for the polls was not yielding results.

Ajayi said the door of the party was open to aggrieved members of the PDP, but they would be allowed to contest on the party’s platform as long as they met the conditions.

“Disagreements are normal in politics, so are movements of politicians from parties to parties for certain reasons.

“So, if some of the aggrieved members of the PDP have decided to join us to contest the elections under our party, why not?

“Our doors are open. We will warmly receive them and they will surely be allowed to contest so far they agree to certain terms and conditions.

“One of the conditions will be that they will not come and use our platform and dump us afterwards. No,we don’t want ‘use and dump”, he said.

Ajayi, who is also the state chairman of the Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC) in the state said the AD was perfecting preparations for the elections.

He added that IPAC was also taking steps to strengthen harmony among the political parties and ensure that the forthcoming polls were peaceful.

He said the party and IPAC were relying on the promise of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission that it would ensure the election was free and fair.

Assessing the performance of the Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration in the last two years, Ajayi said it had done well.

He said the achievement of the governor in the area of road construction was commendable, noting that gridlock had been significantly tackled.

“I commend Gov. Ambode. He has done well. He is visible in the area of infrastructural development.

“However, he can still do better. He can do better to make more impact on the lives of Lagosians,” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that only 268, 942 of the 340, 634 registered voters in Ifako/Ijaiye Federal Constituency in Lagos can vote in Saturday’s bye election in the constituency.

Oha said: “Only 268, 942 eligible voters have in their possession PVCs to exercise their voting right on Saturday election.

“We are no longer distributing PVCs; only these people will be allowed to vote. We want to beg people who have no business with the exercise to steer clear.”
He noted that some voters who had PVCs might have relocated from the constituency while some might have died.

  • Oke concedes defeat, congratulates Akeredolu

    Oke concedes defeat, congratulates Akeredolu

The Gubernatorial Candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in Ondo State, Chief Olusola Oke Monday congratulated Mr Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) of the All Peoples Congress (APC) who won last Saturday’s election.

However,he decried the ‘heavy monetization’ of the election process which produced him.

Oke who addressed reporters in his Ijapo Estate, Akure residence commended both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agents deployed to the State for being fair in the handling of their duties but regretted that the open and free use of money to purchase votes during the election by the ruling parties remains a sad commentary on the nation’s electoral process.

This development, according to him, required the urgent intervention by government if the much publicized anti-corruption agenda of the Federal Government must have meaning to Nigerians.

His words: “in the last seven years, the policy direction of the government of the day (in Ondo State) has resulted in the growth and circulation of poverty to our people.

“The resultant effect is the debilitating poverty that had made the people so vulnerable. Therefore, trading away dignity in the face of excruciating hunger during electioneering process requires little or no considerations for morals and values that defined us as a people.

“The open and free use of money to purchase votes, during the election by the ruling parties remains a sad commentary on our electoral process. This requires urgent intervention by government if the much publicized anti-corruption agenda of the Federal Government must have meaning to Nigerians.

“Offer of money for votes is worse than looting the government treasury. Apart from compromising the dignity of the people, it provides a fertile training ground for future looters of government treasury. The consequence of it is to render the anti-corruption fight a farce.

“There may be no economic matter more urgent, difficult to unravel and more sensitive to the pursuit of the average person in Ondo State than the current indignity foisted on the people by poverty orchestrated by maladministration and priority misplacement by the current administration. We hope the incoming administration will address the problem of poverty so that the integrity of our electoral process will be restored.”

While noting that from the observation of the people of Ondo State, they appear confused and unsure of what would follow the immediate satisfaction from the naira handout received in consideration of the votes cast.

“They appear wondering whether the votes they delivered Saturday would restore light, revive dead industries, complete the uncompleted ones, give hundreds of thousands of unemployed graduates employment, pay arrears of salary to workers and guarantee regular payment of salary; whether their votes will make water to flow again in their unused and rusted water pipes, reduce dust on our roads, revive our education and health sectors and so on,” he stated.

Oke, who recalled the event leading to his and his followers’ movement to the AD, said the movement was necessitated by the need for “us as democrats and conscience of the people to shun the in-built perfidy and organized deception in APC as revealed during its primary election.

“We moved to AD less than six weeks before the gubernatorial election. We knew it was a big challenge and the greatest challenge was time. But we were determined in the pursuit of our dream.

“We know how bad the situation is and we are aware that the art of governance is difficult and complex, especially during trying times. The steep reduction in global oil prices from over 120 dollars per barrel to roughly 30 dollars and the huge debt profile of Ondo State present a hard challenge that requires a prepared mind and experienced hands in the saddle. We are convinced that we can no longer afford past practices.

That was the compelling re-occurring issue that defined our struggle. We thank the people of Ondo State who believed in the struggle of Alliance for Democracy and its candidate, Chief Olusola Oke.

“Ondo State requires economic re-engineering, creative reform, materially changing the substance of its economic policy as well as the objectives of that policy in a way that the economic well-being of the people will be restored again. Therein lies the essence of progressive democratic governance and that is what our party, the Alliance for Democracy stands for.

“ The incoming government therefore must urgently address the issue of ravaging poverty in the state through: Industrialization; Job/Wealth Creation; Rural Integration; Infrastructural Development; Security,”

He, therefore, assured that as members of the opposition, the AD shall continue to contribute to the process of governance and would not hesitate to point, in a civilized manner, the attention of the incoming government to any area where the masses seem not to have been considered in the policy framework of governance.

“We shall voice our opinion whenever we believe any member of the incoming government strayed from the progressive calling required of the administration,” he posited.

Oke congratulated the governor-elect, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN and wish him success and praying to God to guide him “as he directs the affairs of our dear state.”
