2015: Let’s vote Jonathan out, Amaechi advises youths

Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State has advised Rivers youths not to allow Rivers State to crash by ensuring that they use their votes to stop President Goodluck Jonathan from wining the Presidential election in 2015.

He said it has become necessary for Rivers people to prepare to vote against President Jonathan because of the hatred he has for them.

Governor Amaechi spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt during the 30th /32nd convocation ceremony of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education held at the Rumuolumeni main campus of the university.

Amaechi said the President had made things difficult for the state, which has resulted in decline in the revenue base of the state.

He said the students would not get jobs after graduating if they didn’t act fast to resist President Jonathan and his agents in the state.

He noted that the President gave Soku oil well to Bayelsa State and Etche oil well to Abia State, adding that no federal project had been executed in Rivers State since Jonathan became the President of Nigeria.

“As fresh graduates, what you need now is job. The President is not creating an enabling environment that would aid your employment. You must get ready to have your voter cards as the only weapon to vote the President out in 2015.

“We must not allow him to win. If he does, the state will crash. You can imagine that as a South–South President, all the roads linking the South-South are not passable. That is evidence that his government is corrupt.

“Believe me, you will not get a governor that will be like me; I mean a governor that will look at the President in the face and tell him his mind. I have walked out in the meeting with the President twice and no governor will have the mind to do that. We must be ready to vote him out.”

Poor funding by FG won’t stop me from developing Rivers –Amaechi

Rivers State governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has said he is determined to complete most of the projects started by his administration, despite poor funding to states by the Federal Government.

Governor Amaechi expressed the confidence that the reserve fund in the state coffers, amounting to N19billion, would be used judiciously used to complete ongoing projects before the end of his tenure.

Amaechi stated this during an inspection tour of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium ahead of the APC mega rally in Port Harcourt, billed to hold tomorrow.

According to him, “it is so alarming that we cannot pay salaries and even complete our projects. But, we will shame those people who think we cannot complete our projects. We promised to work on Oyigbo roads, complete Elioparanwo road, and also work on Rumuagholu road and several others.

“We will also furnish our primary schools, carry out renovation of our secondary schools. But, we are starved of funds by the federal government, so, how do we complete our projects? That is why I said, we will work until May 29, 2015 before leaving office.

“While saving the one billion naira monthly, I knew that there could be a time when the economy of the country or state will be challenging. So, I started saving the money in our reserve fund. But, the problem of money is not only in Rivers State. The Lagos State governor has complained bitterly, including other APC governors. The approval of the N19 billion by the Rivers State House of Assembly from the reserve fund will help us to complete our projects,” Amaechi explained.

Worried by the high level of alleged stealing in the Jonathan’s administration, Amaechi said the Federal Government has derailed from its vision of creating wealth for the Nigerian people to sabotage the economy of the nation and deliberately impose unnecessary suffering on innocent Nigerians.

“Stealing is increasing by the day. But, President Jonathan said there is no corruption in the country. Corruption in Nigeria is uncontrollable. People are stealing our money every day and the police is helpless because they are part of the system. The Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said Nigeria is not broke and if she is saying that there is money in the country, let her pay us our debts and our money.

“She said, the shortfall in revenue does not mean that Nigeria is broke. When Commissioners of Finance converged in Enugu, almost everybody left without money. How then can we define being broke. She is an expert economics, let her tell Nigerians how our money is spent and where our money is, because the matter is getting serious,” Amaechi said.

    BON 2014: Amaechi lauds Nollywood

•As Iyabo Ojo, Desmond Elliot, Ivie Okujaye, Tope Tedela shine

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has praised the Nigerian motion picture industry for what he described as its pivotal role in the nation’s economy.

Amaechi, who spoke at the Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards, which held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, last Thursday, noted that not only did Nollywood start as a protest literature by addressing social issues, but it also provided employment for several people in the movie production chain.

But a report purportedly saying that the governor insulted Nollywood practitioners who trained in other professional areas has now gone viral in the social media.

The governor, who arrived Port Harcourt for the awards ceremony that evening from his trip to Abuja, where General Muhammadu Buhari had declared interest as APC 2015 presidential aspirant the previous day, had just presented Recognition Awards to veteran artistes such as Liz Benson-Ameye, Nobert Young, Kasimu Yero and Adebayo Salami, when he was asked to give his speech on the occasion.

“Let me say, first and foremost, that this organisation is entirely that of BON Awards…” As if the governor knew that his speech might be misrepresented, he said: “If you were not my friends, we probably wouldn’t have had this hall for use, as some government officials had fixed a dinner or cocktail here this evening before I arrived. But I told them to move it to the other side.” This statement was greeted with thunderous applause.

Amaechi went further to state how Nollywood had rescued the Nigerian economy, by employing hundreds of thousands of Nigerian youths who, despite their qualifications, may have remained jobless because of the unemployment challenge in Nigeria. Speaking interactively, the governor had asked the audience at each point, if they agreed with his analysis.

Corroborating his remarks, popular entertainer, Okey Bakassi, confessed he is an Agricultural Engineering graduate of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology. This threw the hall into another round of laughter.

The governor then recalled a recent conversation between actress Kate Henshaw and her colleague, Basorge Tariah Jnr., on how they both used to trek the streets in search of jobs and how Nollywood became the saving grace.

He then delved into a similar challenge in the banking sector, where a good number of female staff are employed for marketing, noting that such system had been promoting prostitution indirectly.

He said: “If you look at the Nollywood industry, it first started as a protest literature, an expression by the people that we are tired of the current leadership in Nigeria. We need change. Then, funding of the industry became a problem. The Onitsha traders who began to fund these films now determined what kind of contents that were made. At that point, it was no longer about protest literature… So, they began to explore stories about witchcraft. I stopped watching at that time. But here now, I watched The Meeting (movie produced by Rita Dominic), which again was another protest work of art… In the film, we saw a Minister who was abusing his office; you saw the professor waiting and you saw the whole community of people who tried to see him. But to be able to do so, they have to corrupt the secretary… Our films must continue to explore social issues.”

He, therefore, urged practitioners to look into producing more movies that will address social messages rather than allowing political interest to becloud their works, saying they owe the country that duty as her heroes.

“Nollywood is important to me, as it is important to the Nigerian economy. From Kenneth Okonkwo, who has joined politics, to the producers of The Meeting, there is an underlying message, which is the inability of Nigerian elite to lead Nigeria out of the comatose that we found ourselves,” he said. He added that even where jobs are available, the civil service, for example, sometimes does not employ people based on merit.

The governor then said he had contracted veteran actress Joke Silva to produce into a movie the popular Chinue Achebe’s book, Man of The People, which he said is another socially relevant classic.

The main categories of the awards gave accolades to the like of Iyabo Ojo whose movie, Silence, clinched the Movie of The Year diadem, while Ivie Okujaye and Tope Tedela won the Best Actress and Best Actor respectively.

While Desmond Elliot won the Amaka Igwe Director of The Year for the movie, Apaye, Femi Jacobs and Rita Dominic clinched Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively

Others include Yinka Quadri, who won the Best Actor in the Leading Role (Yoruba) award while Ayo Adesanya picked the Best Supporting Actress (Yoruba) honour. Abdulateef Adedeji and Ijeoma Agu won the Most Promising Actor and Actress; Daniel K Daniel and Linda Ejifor picked Revelation of The Year Male and Female; Olamide Davids’ performance in Black Silhouette fetched him the Best Child Actor, even as Priscilla Ojo, Iyabo Ojo’s daughter won the Best Child Actress laurel.

Also rewarded are Best Kiss In A Movie-Majid Michel and Beverly Naya (Forgetting June); Movie with the Best Social Message (Our Difference); Movie with the Best Special Effect (A Mile From Home); Best Use of Make Up (Cobra); Best Use of Food (Being Mrs Elliot), Best Sound (Render To Ceaser), Best Production Design (Osunfunke) and Best Short Film (Brave).

Others are Best Comedy Movie of the Year (30 Days In Atlanta); Best Cinematography (Apaye); Best Screenplay (Render To Ceaser); Best Documentary (Fatai Rolling Dollar); Best Edited Movie (A Mile From Home); and Best TV Series (Lekki Wives).

Other notable guests at the event are Kenneth Okonkwo, Shola Sobowale, Moses Inwang, Bob-Manuel Udokwu, Patience Ozokwor, Ayo Makun (AY) and Emem Isong.

  • Amaechi: my travails’ve made me stronger

Amaechi: my travails’ve made me stronger

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has said the administration’s persecutions, travails and betrayals have made his resolve stronger.

He advised politicians and their supporters to avoid maiming, killing, violence and thuggery, as the nation moves towards the 2015 elections.

Amaechi, in the text of his Independence Day speech, noted that with the end of his tenure approaching, his resolve to build a virile state remained as fervent as it was seven years ago.

He said:”Like athletes in a race, we are running to win. We must continue to run to breast the tape and reach the finish line strong.

“Our persecutions, our travails and betrayals make our resolve stronger.

“By May 29, next year, I shall have finished my course as governor, but shall always put Rivers in my prayers.

“As we prepare for the 2015 general elections, may our politicians and their followers know that a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand.

“If we maim and kill the people we aspire to lead, who would we then govern? Let us run our campaigns in the best manner and pursue our electioneering with respect for one another.”

The governor said the nation’s 54th Independence anniversary called for sober reflection.

He said when he assumed office on October 26, 2007, he committed himself to building a “Rivers State of Possibilities,” where none would be discriminated against.

He said: “We set for ourselves a target and a goal to leave our state better than we found it. It was, indeed, a big challenge, but seven years after, we can present a commendable score sheet to the glory of God.

“When we took the oath of office in 2007, insecurity was at its peak. Military and police checkpoints dotted every street and lane. We were forced to raise our hands on our way home, at the end of a hard day’s job. Our humanity was debased, as much as our pride was assaulted.

“So, we chose to confront the criminals, who had stolen our peace. Not because we were strong, but because we loved our people.

“We chased them, not with arms and ammunition, but with bravery and the boldness of our fathers. We soon made our streets safe again, life returned to our biggest city, Port Harcourt, and our communities. Our economy again began to blossom and those investors chased away, began to return to our state. Today, our state thrives as Nigeria’s second biggest economy.

“Seven years later, we have changed all that. We employed 13, 210 teachers. With our free education programme, we have rekindled the hope of the people.”

The  governor also stated that his administration contained the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

He praised the efforts of the Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, who he said showed immense commitment.

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has been honoured by the people of Emohua Kingdom with the title of “Ugwugwu of Emohua”(the Pride of Emohua).

In a statement by Ozaze Obillor and signed by the monarch, Eze Oha V. B. Okor, the eight communities of Emohua said: “The people of Emohua adore you and appreciate your administration for the landmark achievements brought to Rivers State. The many model schools, the modern road networks, the hospitals, the Greater Port Harcourt Project shall all speak your name long after you would have left the scene.

“In all these projects, you remembered Emohua, we celebrate you, we also appreciate you, we pledge our support and loyalty to your government, Emohua is with you, Emohua is for you”.

Amaechi elevated Eze Vincent Benson Okor from a third- class to first-class monarch.

He said: “In my struggle to become relevant in life and in politics, I have always served my people. If you check in Emohua Local Government, there is only one village that is yet to have a road.

“The only road that we have not done because we owe the contractor is Rumuodogo Road. The one that is a promise is the three-km road, I made that promise and I will redeem it before the  elections. I will drive on that road before election time because I will come back here to ask for your votes.

“In the history of Ikwerre, this is about the first time we are important in national politics, we will not sell it for the position of the governor.

“This is the time when we will be here in Port Harcourt they will call us on the phone to attend meetings in Abuja. We will not sell it because of one young boy who, for reasons of greed, can even sell his parents. We cannot sell the right of the Ikwerre people.”

    Amaechi promises RIVPOLY more facilities

RIVERS State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, has said despite reduction in the internally generated revenue of the state, his government would increase the infrastructure in the state polytechnic.

He made the promise in Port Harcourt, the state capital, during the 18th and the 20th convocations of the Rivers State Polytechnic (RIVPOLY) where he was the special guest of honour.

He said the institution deserves government’s assistance, adding that his administration’s investment in education was yielding positive result.

He said stealing and corruption in government have reduced the state’s income making it difficult for the government to pay salaries, fund projects and take care of the schools.

He said what the state receives  monthly could not execute numerous projects initiated by his administration, adding that lack of fund has become a setback to education.

He noted that his administration had been faithful in the management of resources, which has led to landmark achievements, especially, in the area of education.

He assured the school’s management of more interventions from the state through improved infrastructure.

“The stealing and corruption going on in our government and in the federation have reduced the state’s income from N25 billion to N12 billion, so how do we pay salaries, fund projects and take care of the schools? he asked, adding: “It is the responsibility of the government to fund schools.

He continued: “I have spoken with the Rector of this institution on how to bring the school to standard, but the income coming to us is not allowing government to meet the needs of the people as expected.

“I am delighted to say that our efforts are bearing fruits. We have made numerous achievements, such as the recognition of Port Harcourt as the UNESCO World Book Capital, among others.”

The Rector of the institution, Prof. Obianko Nwolu-Elechi, thanked the governor for honouring the invitation,

He said: “The challenge of the institution is funding, but despite that we are doing our best to ensure that we are among the best polytechnics in Nigeria, including areas of research and planning.”

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has called for improved funding for education.

Amaechi spoke at the 18th – 20th convocation of the Rivers State Polytechnic Bori, for the award of diplomas, HND certificates and prizes held at the convocation arena.

He said: “Nigeria must have the capacity to create the human capital needed for economic development.

“There are serious concerns that our higher institutions are producing graduates not fit for purpose.

“In other words, our children are leaving school without the knowledge to sustain them or contribute to the development of the national economy.”

“Early, in the life of this administration, we declared a state of emergency in the education sector to make Rivers the hub of education, not only in Nigeria, but also in sub-Sahara Africa.

“Our commitment is to improve services and the quality of education and make it more relevant to productive activities, including value re-orientation, employment and wealth creation.

“We shall continue to pursue that dream vigorously and also confront the challenges bedeviling the education sector.

“Even as we strive to revitalise the sector, I am delighted to say that our efforts are bearing fruitful results.

“The naming of Port Harcourt as the World Book Capital 2014 and other achievements gave eloquent testimony of the recognition.

“It is an unprecedented achievement as we put Rivers State and Nigeria on the global map.

“We have made tremendous efforts to replace the guns that were in the hands of our misguided youths, thus, providing them with windows of opportunities and endless possibilities.”

The toll gate on the road will generate revenue for the state,” Amaechi said.

At the Pan-African Health Foundation, the state-owned syringe manufacturing company, Amaechi said his administration has so far disbursed N29 billion for the completion of four new factories under construction. Amaechi: killer-driver must be prosecuted

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Rotimi Amaechi, has said that the driver, who knocked down and killed the Vice-Chairman of The Sun Publishing Ltd, Pastor Dimgba Igwe, must be arrested and prosecuted by the police, to act as a deterrent to others.

Amaechi, who is also the Rivers State governor, spoke yesterday in a condolence letter to the management of the Sun, addressed to Mr. Femi Adesina, the Managing Director of Sun Publishing Ltd.

Igwe was jogging near his Okota, Lagos home on Saturday morning, when he was hit by a car. The driver sped off, abandoning him.

The NGF chairman said: “I received with shock, the news of the sudden passage of one of the leading lights of journalism, Pastor Dimgba Igwe. He was passionate and painstaking. He was a thoroughbred professional and one of Nigeria’s brightest and best.

“His demise at this time, when our nation is in dire need of men of honour and courage and when his younger colleagues need his steadying hands to guide their practice is most painful. We in Rivers State feel a deep sense of personal loss, because of our close relationship with him.

“We enjoin the police to ensure that the driver is brought to book. It is unfortunate that this great man was cut down in his prime, as life only begins at 40.

“While we wait for justice to be done, we assure the deceased’s family and his friends and colleagues that we share in this grief.”

Amaechi also expressed the sympathies of the government and people of Rivers State over the great loss and assured the Igwe family, his relatives and friends of the prayers and support of the Rivers people.
