Soyinka declined many requests to host his 80th birthday, says Amaechi

rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has said many people applied to host the Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on his 80th birthday but he refused.

The governor hailed the literary icon for accepting to be hosted by the state government.

He described Soyinka as a global achiever, who has been consistent in the literary world.

Amaechi said the Nobel laureate has also brought honour to Nigeria, despite the nation’s political travails.

The governor added that Soyinka’s achievements in and contributions to literature are globally acknowledged.

Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), spoke on Wednesday night in Port Harcourt, the state capital, at a dinner in honour of Soyinka on his 80th birthday.

The dinner was attended by Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, friends and associates of the Nobel laureate, as well as many eminent persons.

Amaechi said: “I was quite elated when you accepted to allow us to host you to an 80th birthday dinner. I know how many persons applied to host you. I know how many people you also refused.

“I need to thank you for accepting the invitation by the Rivers State Government to host you to a dinner. The reason for this is basically the achievements that you have made globally, not just in Nigeria.

“You have, in the midst of our so many bad news, brought a good name to Nigeria. I will give you an example, like those days when Nigerians were very good in football. Wherever we went, we would say: ‘I’m from Nigeria. I’m related to Okocha or to Kanu’. That’s because the only good news then was just the football we played. But as things are, the football has joined so many negative things too, because we are not doing too well as we used to do. But you have remained consistent in the literary world.

“The good thing about your achievement is that it has to do with hard work. If you do not read, you won’t be a good writer. Nobody can tell you that once you wake up, you become a good writer. Reading begets writing and you must understand what you are writing about.”

Fayemi hailed Soyinka for standing out among distinguished writers in the world.

The governor described him as one of the world’s literary amazons.

He recalled that the Nobel laureate fought hard for the liberation of Nigeria from the Sani Abacha junta. Soyinka was once incarcerated for his activism against a “hostile” government.

Fayemi said Soyinka’s sense of justice, fair play, dignity for the human person and faith in good governance are among the attributes that distinguish him, besides his writing prowess, across the world.

The governor noted that those attributes endeared the Nobel laureate to Nigerians, who would always recall his active role in setting up Radio Kudirat to fight the Abacha junta.

He said Nigeria needs the experience and wealth of knowledge of the literary giant to get out of its troubled waters.

Fayemi also hailed Amaechi for organising the birthday dinner for Soyinka.

The Nobel laureate thanked Amaechi for the honour.

He told the distinguished guests that his health was energised by a good eating habit, including eating pepper and grape.

Amaechi urged them to continually pray for the nation’s stability.

  • APC: impeachment plot against Amaechi will fail

APC: impeachment plot against Amaechi will fail

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has said any impeachment plot against Governor Rotimi Amaechi will fail.

It said God who has been protecting him all these years, will “surely” see him to the end of his tenure on May 29, next year.

The party lauded the governor’s commitment to serve the people.

The APC, through its state Chairman, Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, said the defection of 24 members of the House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC was a step in the right direction.

The Felix Obuah-led Rivers PDP, on April 29 last year, suspended all the pro-Amaechi lawmakers from the party.

The party said:”We are confident that God will not allow the evil machinations of the PDP to materialise. One thing going for Amaechi is that having spent eight years as Speaker of the House of Assembly and four years as the Leader of the Speakers’ Forum in Nigeria, he is in a better position to understand legislative power games.

“We should also appreciate the fact that apart from politics, most of the lawmakers are his colleagues and political associates, who are too principled to sell out at this crucial time.

“ Amaechi and the lawmakers have come a long way. These lawmakers and the governor share the same political fate. They were all members of the PDP and were all suspended from the party.

“The lawmakers are all victims of PDP’s brutality and high-handedness. Governor Amaechi and the G-25 lawmakers detest evil, greed and politics without principle.

“We make bold to say that Rivers APC lawmakers are not only progressives and God-fearing democrats, but most importantly, true sons of Rivers State, who will not join our enemies to cause any confusion in the state.

“These enemies of democracy have demonstrated their hatred for our governor and Rivers State. It is our duty to ensure that they do not come here to scuttle everything that Amaechi has achieved for the state and its people.

“We are pleased to congratulate the 24 lawmakers, who declared for the APC. By so doing, they have demonstrated that they are true progressives, who are resolutely committed to an egalitarian, virile and vibrant Rivers State.”

  • Amaechi: I remain committed to the people

Amaechi: I remain committed to the people

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the living standard of people in the rural areas.

The governor said his administration is determined to finish strong.

Amaechi spoke at his “Meet-the-People tour” of seven communities in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

The communities visited were Igwuruta, Ipo, Omademe, Ozuaha, Omuanwa, Ubima and Omerelu.

The tour, according to him, is in furtherance of the administration’s open-government policy.

He said: “As we enter the last lap of our administration, it is imperative that we go round to see what governance gaps remain in our quest to guarantee the lives of present and future generations.

“This is a non-partisan and non-political tour. We want all parties, persons and interests to please join us in this critical interaction, as we make our final push to complete our mandate and deliver on our promises to the Rivers people.”

The governor condemned the attack on his supporters and their property at Igwuruta by thugs sponsored by the leaders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The thugs destroyed vehicles owned by Amaechi’s supporters, before men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SAS) chased them away.

The car of one of the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chidi Wihioka, was damaged by the “frustrated” attackers.

At Igwuruta, the governor said the visit was to bring government closer to the people and discuss ways to ensure more development impact on rural dwellers.

He announced the building of two more model primary schools in the area and unveiled plans for empowerment programmes.

Amaechi urged the people to participate in the voter registration and vote for the APC.

“Permanent voter registration will soon commence. I urge you to register and wait for next February, when you will vote to elect credible leaders of your choice. If politicians know that your votes count, they will give you anything you need from them. That power of governance is in the hands of the electorate. Don’t sell your votes,” Amaechi advised.

At Ipo, the governor promised to ensure the building of the Airport-Ipo-Omademe road and to give scholarship awards.

Also, at Omademe, Ozuoha and Omuanwa communities, the governor pledged to facilitate the completion of on-going internal roads, construction of a model Health Centre at Omuanwa and empowerment of the people to reduce poverty in the area.

Governors Forum to draw up retirement benefits

The Amaechi-led Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) plans to make objective recommendation for governors’ retirement benefits.

This is part of the resolutions adopted at the fourth Retreat of the Forum in Port Harcourt on Friday.

Amaechi,  who read the communiqué at the end of the retreat which had health and youth unemployment and transition – life after office prospects and challenges as its major focus, said the governors would henceforth pay attention to good governance and service delivery in the remaining period of their tenure. They said:”We restate our perception of our positions as time-limited public service and our determination to leave behind legacy projects, which we and our states can be justifiably proud.

“We will use our position in the National Economic Council (NEC) to press for low interest rates and enforcement of import policies and collection of customs’ duties. We will also adopt investment for poverty-reducing employment strategies, especially by emphasising policies that would generate employment at the local level.”

On youth unemployment, the governors said provision would be made for and support all the infrastructure necessary for speedy Internet connections, including broadband, for the youths in particular and other Nigerians to participate massively in the wealth to be made from the knowledge-based economy.

The retreat was attended by   Governors  Amaechi, Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Umaru Al-Makura (Nasarawa), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) and Kassim Shettima of Borno State, who was represented by his deputy, Zanna Umaru Mustapha.

Impeachment: Court strikes out Amaechi’s suit

A state High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Monday struck out suit filed by the state governor, Rotimi Amaechi, seeking to stop members of the state House of Assembly from removing him from office.

The court said the suit was baseless and incompetent.

Crisis erupted in state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party in April last year and later extended to national level leading to Amaechi’s suspension from the party a month later.

Following his suspension, five lawmakers in the state Assembly who are not loyal to him initiated moves to remove him, by first attempting to impeach the speaker of the House, Otelemaba Dan-Amachree.

The lawmakers are –  Evans Bipi (Ogu/Bolo),  Kelechi Nwogu (Omuma), Martin Amaewhule(Obio/Akpor 1),  Victor Ihunwo (Port Harcourt 3), and Micheal Chinda  (Obio/Akpor 2).

Amaechi approached the court to restrain all the 32 members, including the Speaker from removing him from office without following due process.

The five lawmakers filed an application expressing their desire to join in the suit on a separate capacity, saying they have different opinion from that of their colleagues in the suit; and should be given fair hearing.

However, Justice George Omereji on Monday struck out the suit, citing non reasonable cause of action.

The judge said the governor’s fears were unfounded, adding that he laid allegations on persons that were not joined in the suit.

Amaechi swears-in new revenue board chairman, others

RIVERS State Governor and Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has said that his administration would need more funds from the state Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to complete ongoing projects in the state. He noted that it is the responsibility of the state Board of Internal Revenue to ensure that more funds accrue to the state from taxes and levies to assist the government in its expenditure. Amaechi spoke shortly after simultaneously swearing in the chairman of the State Board of Internal Revenue, Onene Osila Obele-Oshoko and three members of the State Judicial Service Commission (JSC). The three JSC members are Mr Tom Jackson Orage, Mr Tonye Lolomari and High Chief Ambrose Igbokwe Nwuzi. After the brief swearing-in and oath-taking ceremony, which held at the Executive Council Chambers of Government House, Port Harcourt on Friday, Governor Amaechi congratulated all the appointees and urged them to rededicate themselves to their responsibilities and service to the state. He recalled that the state revenue base jumped up shortly after he became governor of Rivers State and urged Onene Oshoko to plug all loopholes in tax payments to sustain the increase in IGR. “When we took over government, it was N2.5 billion in a month. We have gotten to N6 billion, and I hear we are doing an average of N8 billion now. It’s still not enough. Our recurrent expenditure has gone up to N8.9 billion, so we need to be able to make between N10 and N11 billion for the IGR to be able to at least handle our recurrent expenditure.

Amaechi: more jobs ‘ll aid fight against insurgency

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has said insurgency, kidnapping and other social vices are the fallouts of poverty and unemployment in the land.

The governor spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt when the Senate Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation visited him at the Government House.

The committee was on a facility tour of Federal Government-owned corporations and agencies in the state.

Amaechi said his administration started creating jobs when he assumed office in 2007 by building over 140 primary health centres and over 300 model primary schools.

He said: “The current problem we are having in Nigeria is tied to poverty and unemployment. I believe that one solution to this insurgency is education and unemployment. The easiest employment is farming. This is because a large number of them are not educated and are unskilled.

“I applied it here in Rivers State and it worked. Most of them who were given guns by the former militants, when we asked them, they told us that their parents could not train them. That is why we introduced free education and free health care programmes. And it occurred to us that to address this problem, we needed social policing. While you are doing physical policing, you must also do social and economic policing.

“To do that, we started creating employment opportunities by building over 140 primary health care centres and over 300 model primary schools. If you visit these projects, there is no way you will not see at least 50 workers in each of the schools.”

The governor added: “We created the banana farms, which has created jobs for over 2,000 persons. We revived the Rison Palm. It was dead when we came, and it has employed over 5,000 workers.

“Also, the Songhai Farm has employed over 2,000 workers, while five fish farms in strategic locations have been completed. We have done all that to create jobs for our people.

“I am very sure that the establishment of farms will go a long way to reduce the recruitment of Boko Haram members. The Federal Government must take education, employment and reduction of poverty as priority. We do appreciate the challenges the Federal Government is facing now.”

  • Amaechi: Labour leaders junketing with politicians

Amaechi: Labour leaders junketing with politicians

The Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has accused Labour leaders of frolicking about with politicians instead of protecting the interest of the suffering workers.

The governor also said most Nigerians were becoming helpless because the Federal Government was not effectively handling security matters.

Amaechi spoke yesterday at the Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt during the May Day celebration.

The governor urged Nigerians to rise against impunity.

He said: “The leaders of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Nigeria labour Congress (NLC) know the problems; they know the solutions. But they do not want to go for the solutions. I do not know why and I do not know if they have compromised.

“There has never been any successful democracy in Nigeria without the contributions of the NLC and the TUC. Few Nigerians just sit and cart away our money and you think that we will not die of hunger! And because there is hunger in the land, there is bound to be violence. The fact that a few people are stealing the money in itself is social, economic and political violence.

“Today, all of us who are Labour leaders are junketing and enjoying with politicians. So, the poor masses are suffering because they have nobody to speak for them. They are voiceless and there is no leader to lead the voiceless. They are hungry and there is nobody to address their hunger.”

The governor  advised that Labour leaders be at the forefront of the struggle to ensure a better society, rather than being afraid of confronting those at the helm of affairs.

He said: “You, as Labour leaders, have not asked what we need to do to get this democracy working? Why is there impunity? Why are policemen being used against Nigerians? Why should Nigeria lose over 200 children and nobody is talking? It could be your turn.”

  • PDP leaders are begging me to return, but I’m finished with party —Amaechi

PDP leaders are begging me to return, but I’m finished with party —Amaechi

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State said yesterday that he is through with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), irrespective of whether the Federal Government returns the state’s oil wells in Kalabari and Etche, ceded to neighbouring Bayelsa, Abia and Imo states, or not.

The governor, who spoke to reporters on the sideline of the inauguration of Port Harcourt as the World Book Capital 2014, vowed that he would not succumb to pressure from some PDP leaders to return to the “dead” party.

He did not name the PDP leaders.

The arrowhead of the opposition to the governor and the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, had claimed recently that Amaechi and his allies were pleading to return to the PDP.

However, the Rivers governor said that Wike does not know what it means to be a minister.

Amaechi said yesterday: “I am not returning to the PDP. That man (Wike), they should check him whether he is okay. I have finished with the PDP. I have told them. I made a promise that if they return the Kalabari oil wells, we will see how it goes, but until that happens.

“Beyond the oil wells, I have told them, they have approached me. If they want, I will call the names of those that approached me, but that is not an issue. There are issues that are fundamentally different. If I am a progressive, it must be seen in the type of life I live, in what I do, how I relate with people and the type of governance.

“I said people should ignore him (Wike). Are you sure that if I tell the PDP that I am coming back in 10 days, they will not send a dance party here? One problem with leadership in Nigeria is that when you are a president, a governor or a minister, what you say must be factual. You cannot be part of gossip.

“So, that young man (Wike), who claims to be Minister of State for Education, who does not know what it means to be a minister, is saying I am begging to come back to the PDP. What is the PDP? I beg you, please, do not ever ask me question about that young man (Wike), because I will not answer you.”

Amaechi also stated that his administration’s initiative had moved from the Garden City Literary Festival to the Port Harcourt Book Festival and also moved on to contemplate establishing a book centre, worth N3.5 billion, not owned by the Rivers State government, but by a non-governmental organisation, the Garden City Literary Association

The NGF chairman stressed that his administration’s efforts in the education sector might be responsible for the nomination of Port Harcourt as the World Book Capital 2014.

The Rivers governor said: “The second transformation is, somewhere along line, she (Mrs. Koko Kalango, the Project Director of the Port Harcourt World Book Capital 2014) brought the idea of competing for the World Book Capital and I said, that will not be a bad idea.

“So, we funded her to compete and we won the nomination. It was wonderful that she did that. When she came to me and said we won, I now asked her what the World Book Capital is all about and she explained that it is like the Kane Festival by film makers and that is what it is to book readers.

“We budgeted nearly N4 billion for the World Book Capital. We are building libraries, but I call them reading rooms, in the city. They are about seven and we are having 23 in all the local government areas. We will equip and furnish the libraries.
