He said the victory was a sign that the people of Ekiti State still have confidence in the former minister’s ability to provide good governance and render efficient service to the state and its people.

Ambode: victory is sign that APC electoral value has not waned

Ambode, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, hailed President Muhammadu Buhari, APC leadership, members and its supporters for the hard-fought victory.

He added that it was a testament to the fact that the electoral value of the party has not waned.

The governor praised and congratulated the governor-elect for his hard fought victory and wished him well as he prepares to take the mantle of leadership for a second time.

He also urged Fayemi to use his second coming to build on its previous achievements and forge ahead with the quest to unite the Yoruba nation, especially through regional integration and economic transformation of the Southwest geo-political zone and justify the confidence the Ekiti electorate have reposed on him.

    Victory well deserved,

    says Sani-Bello

Okorocha added that “with the election of the APC candidate, the Southwest has reminded those who might have forgotten that they were progressives to remain.

He congratulated the APC leaders in the Southwest, including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former APC interim National Chairman Bisi Akande, Chief Segun Oni and the APC governors in the geo-political zone for closing ranks to ensure victory for APC and Fayemi.

The Imo State governor lauded APC National Chairman Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for the victory, stating that there was no doubt that “with Oshiomhole, all the lost grounds by APC will be regained”.

It’s a pointer to what 2019 ‘ll bring, says Bello

Bello said Fayemi’s victory was a victory for democracy and a sign that the people of Ekiti State were ready to join the fold of the progressives.

The governor noted that under Buhari, elections continue to be free and fair, “a pointer to what 2019 will bring”.

“In a democracy, the wishes and desires of majority trump over those of the minority  and only a true democrat like President Buhari would respect that time and time again,” he said.

Congratulating the Ekiti people for making the right choice, he praised them for their peaceful conduct during the elections.

    Why APC candidate

    won, by Akeredolu

Acknowledging the enormity of the task ahead of the new helmsman, Akeredolu is optimistic that Fayemi’s rich experience,  far-reaching contacts, resourcefulness and robust intellectual capacity  would undoubtedly help his iron cast resolve to restore hope in Ekiti State”.

Akeredolu also extended courtesies to Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, whose party’s candidate,  Prof. Kolapo Olusola Eleka, was defeated in the Saturday July 14 governorship election.

  • Macron’s visit: Ambode hosts kid artist, parents

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday hosted the kid hyperrealist artist, Waris Olamilekan Kareem, who drew the portrait of French President Emmanuel Macron in two hours during his visit to the country. He drew Macron’s portrait at the Afrika Shirine in Ikeja, Lagos, on July 4.

The 11-year-old artist came with his parents, teachers and instructor. The governor promised to give him educational support and also help to make him a great artist.

Ambode also promised to support Kareem’s instructor, Adeniyi Adewole Wasiu, who has an Arts Academy, Ayowole Academy of Arts.

Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture Steve Ayorinde said the governor’s gesture was to encourage the kid.

Ayorinde said: “You would recall that Kareem was one of the star attractions during President Macron’s visit to Afrika Shrine. Before painting the President and presenting the portrait to him, Kareem had become a household name thanks to the special story done by a media house.

“So, the governor has invited him and his parents to come and meet him and because the governor is interested in his education and if you like the welfare of his parents, His Excellency has promised to assist just like he did to the Footprint of David boys who had a special performance at the State House during the Children’s Day.

“So, the governor is interested in his school. We are happy that Kareem is a product of a public school and you could see that the Principal of his school is here and she is happy. The governor has also acknowledged the contribution of Kareem’s mentor, Adewole who is here and because he also has an Arts Academy that inspired and produced Kareem, the governor thinks that, that Arts Academy should flourish and he is going to also support him, his career and what he is doing.”

The commissioner said the government would ensure Kareem got good education and training.

“The Ministry of education has been involved from day one since the story was reported but our Ministry (Tourism, Arts and Culture) would also be monitoring Kareem. He is already in JSS1; he is talented as an artist but then that is not the only subject that he would be taking.

“We want him to be a successful well-rounded student first and foremost and of course as an artist. It is a long haul thing but first good education and let him continue as a good artist,” Ayorinde said.

Kareem said the development was a life-changing moment for him, adding that he was thrilled to meet with President Macron and Governor Ambode.

“I am very happy and excited. I thank Governor Ambode for this opportunity. Now, I want to study my arts very well; I want to be a good artist, great artist in the world,” Kareem said.

His father, Mutiu Kareem, said his son’s feat was a turning point in their lives.

He said: “I thank God for this. What has happened in my life through my son is something I never thought would happen to me but this is a miracle. I am so happy. I want to thank Governor Ambode for all he has done for us and also my son’s instructor who trained him, as well as his teachers and mother.”

  • Ambode to new permanent secretaries: work for modern Lagos

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday swore in six new permanent secretaries.

He urged them to contribute to his administration’s efforts at building a modern smart-city for the residents and visitors.

The new permanent secretaries and their portfolios are: Mrs Bamidele Fadipe, Office of Civic Engagement; Mr Bashir Braimah, Public Service Office; Mrs Raji Ganiyat, Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment; Mrs Omotola Akinsanya, Local Government Establishment, Training and Pension; Mrs Olufunmilayo Okeowo, Tutor General/Permanent Secretary, Education District Four and Mrs Adeleye Olatokunbo, Teachers Establishment and Pensions Office.

Ambode said the vision to transform the state could only be actualised when abilities were matched with responsibilities.

He added: “We believe strongly that our state’s public service deserves nothing but the best. Our vision to build a Modern Smart City-State can only be driven and actualised by matching ability with responsibility. This is a key philosophy which has guided all our actions since we assumed office.

“I have no doubt in your capability to add value to governance and contribute to the realisation of this administration’s short, medium and long term plans.”

Congratulating the new permanent secretaries, Ambode said the decision to elevate them was not only informed by the need to fill the vacancies created by the exit of their predecessors after attaining the retirement age, but because they possess qualities which stand them out among others.

The governor urged the appointees to align their actions with the overall policy objectives of his administration.

These, he said, include selfless service, inclusive governance, fair and just distribution of resources among the people as well as deployment of best global practices in service delivery.

Ambode said: “I look forward to seeing your positive impact in the state public service, especially in the area of improved efficiency and effectiveness with which government business is handled, keeping in mind that we can only be adjudged to have done the right thing when our people are happy and satisfied.”

Thanking the governor for the appointment, Braimah, who spoke on behalf of the appointees, expressed appreciation to him for counting them worthy to serve the state in the highest capacity in the public service.

He assured him that they would contribute to the development of the state.

Braimah said: “As your foot soldiers, we have hit the ground running with competence, commitment and concern for a better Lagos. For the confidence reposed in us, we are eternally grateful and we shall add our plough to the various deliverables to which Lagosians are accustomed.”

  • Ambode gets award of excellence

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday received a Distinguished Award of Excellence from the Nigerian Institute of Training and Development (NITAD), at Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre, Abuja.

The governor, represented by Establishment, Training and Pension Commissioner Dr. Akintola Benson Oke, expressed delight and appreciated the award.

He said his administration was committed to the transformation of the public service to a leading civil service in Africa, adding that the Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions had organised training aimed at improving the performances of civil servants.

“It is, therefore, gratifying that third parties have taken notice of the government’s commitment in this regard, as NITAD has decided to confer an award of excellence on the Lagos State government, in recognition of its commitment to capacity development, “ Ambode said.

He said NITAD played an important role in human resources development and management, noting that the institute’s mission to improve human resources practice in the public and private sectors was commendable.

The governor said NITAD’s commitment to enhance effectiveness, efficiency and productivity, as well as promote high professional standard in human resource development, utilisation and evaluation attracted the admiration of many.

“NITAD has facilitated the exchange of knowledge, skills and experience by those engaged in training and development. The innovative means by which the institute has sought to promote the achievement of a better utilisation of human ability and potential in business, industry and government are commendable.

“The institute’s promotion of interaction and members’ exposure through a strong affiliation and co-operation with the International Federation of Training and Development Organisations (IFTDO), based in Geneva, Switzerland, are worthy of attention,” he said.

Ambode hailed NITAD’s penchant for stimulating discourse on topical issues in human resources, which, according to him, is a worthy endeavour.

  • Ambode assures investors

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has reiterated his administration’s commitment to the safety of life and property of Lagosians, including investors.

He said their security would not be compromised.

The governor, represented by Special Adviser on Communities and Communications Hakeem Omoyele Sulaimon, spoke yesterday at the inauguration of Orimedu Police Post in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government.

He said: “In realisation that no meaningful development can be achieved in an atmosphere of unrest, fear and uncertainty, the present administration is determined and committed towards ensuring a secure and safer Lagos. This, among others, has made our administration to enjoy the goodwill and partnership of well-meaning individuals and the organised private sector, who have made substantial contributions to the Lagos State Trust Fund. The government has used the donations to raise the capacity of security agencies, with the provision of modern crime fighting equipment.”

Ambode solicited more cooperation and support from residents for security agencies through timely information sharing, saying: “We must work together to create a crime-free state conducive to investment and pleasure.”

Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal, represented by Area J Commander Felix Oben, thanked Medview Airline for donating the building. He promised that the command would ensure security in the area and Lagos State.

Edgal praised the governor for his provision for the command.

Ibeju Lekki Local Government Chairman Dr. Olorunkemi Surakat hailed the government for the provision of the police post and other infrastructure.

He assured that the structure built and donated by the airline as part of its corporate social responsibility, would be put to proper use.

  • ‘Assaulted’ lawyer petitions Ambode, IG

A lawyer, Olalekan Karimu, has petitioned Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, for allegedly being assaulted by two policemen.

The lawyer was seen in a video which went viral last Wednesday being slapped and threatened with guns by the officers from the Lion Building Police Command, in Lagos.

Karimu, a former employee in the law firm of Olawore & Co of 28/30 McCarthy Street, Lagos Island, claimed in the July 5 petition, that the police were invited by his former employer.

According to Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, the firm’s senior partner is Mr Oluyomi Olawore.

In a statement on July 5, Edgal queried the Lion Building Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and ordered the trial of the officers.

He warned that Karimu and his principal may face trial, if found culpable.

Edgal added: “Barrister Oluyomi Olawore sent a distress call to the police through one of his junior partners, requesting that he be rescued from another junior partner by name Barrister Olakunle Kareem whom he alleged was about to use unlawful force on him having disconnected the firms’ CCTV cameras and locked up all doors leading into the firm and by so doing, held Barrister Olawore hostage inside his office.

“It was based on the complaint that the DPO in charge of Lion Building dispatched policemen to the troubled chamber to bring the feuding lawyers over for interrogation.”

But Karimu’s petition alleged that an attempt was made to “cover up this case.”

The cousin to a former Minister of Communications Gen. Tajudeen Olarewaju, alleged that he was assaulted, harassed and threatened.

Karimu said: “On June 29, men of the Nigerian Police Station at Lion Building Police Command, Lagos, on the instructions and supervision of my employer in his office, in Onikan, Lagos assaulted me.

“Being employed as a consultant in the law office, the employment agreement given to me says that I am to receive my receipts of withholding tax deducted and payment of my salary in lieu of termination of notice.

“I was, however, summoned on the 31st of May, 2018 that my services would be terminated on June 29th, 2018 without handing over tax receipts or salary but instead, issued a postdated cheque which was subsequently rejected by the bank over irregularity, upon presentation.”

Karimu said he tried to explain what happened and get another cheque, but his employer declined to re-issue or sign the returned cheque. Rather he invited the police.

In a statement on July 6, Olawore refuted claims that he procured policemen to assault Karimu.

Olawore said: “I have watched the viral video of Mr. Kunle Karimu (my former colleague in chambers) being assaulted by policemen and I state without equivocation that I did not give any instruction to that effect and find his treatment reprehensible. The assault of any person (whether by a private citizen or law-enforcement officer) is unacceptable and should be deprecated.

  • Ambode, US group offer 15 free heart surgeries

One after the other the patients expressed gratitude to the Lagos  State Governor  Akinwunmi Ambode  government for helping them to obtain free surgries for their cardiothoracic challenges.

Though they were still in plasters and bandages, this did not stop them from expressing their gratitude.

These were some of the 15 indigent patients with congenital heart diseases, who received corrective surgeries at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja,  held between May and last month, courtesy of Ambode.

Giving an insight into the Health Mission, LASUTH’s Chief Medical Director, Prof Wale Oke said the cost of a surgery for heart-related diseases was over N1 million per patient, and that it was notable that the governor and the foreign partners embarked on the mission to assist the beneficiaries.

Oke said a cardiothoracic surgery is a super specialty that involves operation of organs in the chest, which include the heart, lungs, and great blood vessels. “It is used for remedy conditions like hole in the heart, tumors in the heart and lungs, disease of the heart valves and various lung conditions. The aim of this planned successive mission is to bring succour to the people with congenital heart disease, and also reduce the cost of medical tourism in addition to building capacity of specialists in the hospital.”

He added that Cardiostart International, a  non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in the United States, held the free open heart surgeries, with support from surgeons and health care professionals of the LASUTH’s Cardiothoracic Surgery unit.

“The Cardiostart International team came to LASUTH with various equipment, supplies and consumables worth hundreds of thousands of dollars for the benefit of the indigent patients,” he added.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Lagos Health, Dr Sola Pitan confirmed that the mission  was free, adding that it demonstrates  Ambode’s magnanimity and vision to place the state in the forefront of health care in Africa.

Pitan said this was not the first  free surgery programme in the state. He said the state will continue to do more for its citizens and the country at large. He praised the team for making the programme a success.

Cardiostart Foundation team director, Emily Farkas  urged the hospital to keep the programme alive. She said the NGO brought the experts   because of its passion to help.

Farkas urged Nigerians to keep supporting the government to move the programme forward.

A surgical technologist, Fran Younger said LASUTH was prepared to give the centre of excellence its best, adding that the workers would continue to support patients.

Jumoke Akindele, 43, an Ogun State indigene trader, who had a heart problem for five years, said she had not engaged in anything productive since the problem started.

“I would have died if not for Governor Ambode. I thank the Lagos State government for the free surgery and also thank the staff of LASUTH for taking care of me and pray that God in His infinite mercy will continue to work with them,”Akindele said.

Fatima, 53, from the north, said: “I have been having problems in treating this condition due to lack of funds knowing how expensive it is to treat a heart ailment. I thank the Lagos State government for doing this great thing in my life. I wasn’t expecting this to come my way being a Northerner, but I am not discriminated against here in Lagos”.

Head of LASUTH Cardiothoracic Unit Dr  Bode Falese said surgery required some things. “It requires personnel, training, resources, infrastructure, equipment, and all these are available at LASUTH. What are lacking right now are two things- a dedicated centre for cardiac surgery, and financial assistant to do this on a regular basis.

“And to offset the cost, I will further urged the government,  non- governmental organisations (NGOs), charity groups, and well-meaning Nigerians to come to the aid of people with congenital heart diseases based on the fact that many people need financial assistant,”Falase said.

  • Ambode: Lekki Zone export flow’ll hit over $6b

•Governor urges Buhari to sign ACFTA

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday said the export inflow at the Lekki Free Zone (LFZ), is projected to hit over $6billion (about N2.159trillion) by 2020.

He said it was time for Nigeria to develop sustainable roadmap to rev up export with particular focus on multi-sector products far beyond oil.

The governor spoke at the second National Committee Meeting on Export Promotion of the National Economic Council (NEC) in Lagos.

He said beyond oil, it was now important for the country to put in place infrastructure and other initiatives to support other sectors with a view to preparing them for export.

Ambode urged President Muhammadu Buhari to  ratify the agreement on African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA) which had already been signed by 49 out of 55 countries. “Nigeria must show leadership because the whole of Africa is waiting for us to show leadership and we must drive the economy of the continent,” he said.

According to him, the state government has already keyed into several export-oriented initiatives such as One-State One-Product Initiative, adding that it was gratifying to note that tremendous progress had been made in that area.

“Our efforts in this area include the development of Lekki Free Zone as a one-stop export processing zone and we are happy to report that we have made tremendous progress in this particular export zone and I hope participants would have the time to see what it is that is actually going on in that place.

“Just to give you a clearer picture of what we are saying. At the end of 2020, when the investment of the Dangote Industries and other Deep Seaport that we are putting in that place will fully come on stream, the export inflows that we are projecting for that place will be over $6billion and that is just the way to go,”  Ambode said.

He said through the export initiatives being spearheaded and monitored by the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Lagos has identified and commenced the process of developing three key commodities in which the state has comparative and competitive advantage. These are coconut, fish and vegetables.

“We plan to facilitate the development of these commodities into exportable products. Our export promotion initiatives also include export aggregators designed to boost production capacities of our indigenous micro small and medium industries. The objective is to create locally made products and services that not only satisfy local market but meet competitive export demand.

“We have also developed enterprise zone, small scale industrial estate and light industrial parks in different parts of this state to provide business accommodation and also factory spaces, support made-in-Lagos campaign and to also enhance market access for our MSMEs,” the governor said.

He said the initiatives were some of the programmes of the state government to support the Zero Oil plan of the Federal Government, just as he urged participants at the meeting to come up with a viable and sustainable agenda that would at the end of the day, help in achieving Nigeria’s economic rebirth without reliance on oil.

  • Ambode trains civil servants in decision making

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday trained senior civil servants in high impact decision making.

He said this was to make them effective in making decisions that were rational, informed and useful in the change mantra embarked on by his administration.

Speaking at a two-day training in Ikeja, the governor said leaders were tasked with making decisions everyday, adding that “as the state grows, decision making becomes more frequent and complicated, hence the need for this training that will boost high impactful decision making.”

Ambode, represented by the Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Benson Oke, stressed that the government, in recognition of the importance of the decision making duties of directors in the public service, approved a proposal to organise a workshop for director-level officers, to impact on other civil servants.

He said: “Since the inauguration of this administration, almost every officer in the public service has been enrolled for at least one impactful and skill enhancing training. I am hopeful that the benefits derived at the end of this workshop will be transferred to the public service for the benefit of Lagosians.”

The governor added that the ability to make effective decisions that were rational, informed and collaborative could reduce opportunity cost, while building a strong, organisational focus.

He said to be effective in decision making, senior civil servants should follow these two rules: They should concentrate on the problem at hand and entertain all ideas and at the same time refrain from allowing civil servants to evaluate others.

“All over the world, the most important task of executives and managers is to make decisions, hence the need for the Ambode administration to organise this training.”

The Permanent Secretary in the Office of Establishment, Training and Pensions, Mrs Rhoda Ayinde,  congratulated the participants for being lucky to be selected.

She urged them to justify the huge amount spent on them by participating efficiently and effectively,  adding that they should confirm the confidence reposed in them by impacting the training on other civil servants and the entire Lagosians.
