  • Ambode: Inclusion as solution

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode made history when he delivered the Convocation Lecture of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on May 8.  His words: “True, I stand before you as the first UNILAG graduate to become Governor of Lagos. I am humbled by this distinction and elated to be the first to walk this path.”  The title of his lecture was “Inclusion: Path to a new nation.”

He told the 2017 graduands:  ”In 1984, I attended a convocation much like today’s. On that day, I sat where you, now sit. I was an eager yet apprehensive young man set to graduate at 21. Although ready to tackle the world and make my mark, I was also a bit uncertain about what that world and life would bring.”

How Ambode rose to his current position illustrates the power of performance. Between 1988 and 1991, he was assistant treasurer, Badagry Local Government, Lagos State.  Ten years later, he became auditor general for Local Government in Lagos State. In 2005, Ambode was appointed permanent secretary of the Ministry of Finance.

As accountant general for Lagos State from 2006 – 2012, Ambode was “in charge of all the financial activities of the state and directly responsible for over 1400 accountants in the state service.” It is to his credit that “under his watch, the State Treasury Office (STO) revolutionised the way Lagos State finances were raised, budgeted, managed and planned.” Also to his credit:  ”In his six years as the Lagos State accountant general, the state’s financial performance improved visibly with the budget performing at a remarkable average of 85% annually.”

These features of Ambode’s profile demonstrate that he is probably the most experienced individual in terms of familiarity with the state civil service operations to attain the position of governor since Lagos State was created in 1967.  After a 27-year civil service career, Ambode voluntarily retired in 2012 and started a consulting career. Then politics came up.  It is interesting that he was governor when Lagos celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017.

In three years as the governor of Nigeria’s most developed state, Ambode has shown that the pursuit of development requires politics of development. Through his concept of “One Lagos,” Ambode has promoted inclusive governance as key to inclusive growth.  It is commendable that his administration’s inclusive governance and inclusive development efforts continue to drive development at the grassroots.

A winning governor will attract endorsements that are justifiable.   So, it is logical and predictable that Ambode is enjoying an abundance of justifiable endorsements.  He is qualified to seek reelection and his endorsers are backing him for a second term in office. The beauty of the endorsements is that they are based on what he has to show for his time in office so far. In other words, he has attracted powerful endorsements through the power of his performance.

The point is that Ambode represents forward-looking governance, which Lagos needs to develop.  Listed 12th among the world’s largest 35 cities in 2015 when Ambode became governor, the former federal capital is work in progress, and the development-related results of Ambode’s progressive efforts are unmistakable and applaudable.

The range of Ambode’s vision leaves no room for underdevelopment in any area, whether it is lighting up the city, keeping the city clean, building homes, rebuilding roads, providing security, tackling transportation, building theatres and so on.

It is noteworthy that Ambode, in his lecture, modestly acknowledged the work of specific previous governors. “First, the administration of Asiwaju Tinubu and then that of Babatunde Raji Fashola, moved the master plan from concept to concrete reality,” he noted, adding,  “My administration is both a beneficiary of their work as well as a continuance of that work. We strive to go further because we have the opportunity to build upon what they have done.” Now the state has developed to the point where the Ambode administration is talking about turning Lagos into a Smart City.

It was appropriate that he mentioned some of his achievements as governor. He observed: “In every way, our infrastructure is improved.  Our roads are better, our mass transportation has expanded, hospitals give better care to the sick and afflicted, education is improving and more affordable housing is being constructed before our very eyes.”

Remarkably, Ambode focused on the subject of inclusion in his convocation lecture.  He said: “Here, I offer Lagos State as an example of what is possible for all Nigeria and Nigerians when we practice the governance of inclusion instead of the old, malign ways of exclusion… You see, the inclusion I talk about is more than a pretty word to say; so that I sound like some type of enlightened politician.” He added:  ”Inclusion is a principle by which we put to constructive use the full industry and skills of the people; Rich and Poor, Old and Young, Men and Women, Boys and Girls. This results in greater individual and collective productivity…Inclusion is not only the moral thing to do, it is the smart thing as well.”

It is testimony to Ambode’s quality governance that the country’s other states cannot resist applauding his governance model. He has shown that well-rounded governance is an expression of well-rounded thinking, and has demonstrated the possibilities of political governance in a country that needs models of creative thinking in high political office.

Ambode’s convocation lecture also focused on the connection between inclusion and federalism. He argued:  ”It is my unyielding belief that the principle of inclusion which has served Lagos so well can be employed in other states with similar effect…However, for states to give optimal service to their citizens the principle of inclusion first needs to be applied to the division of power between the Federal and State governments.”

His solution is based on his concept of inclusion: “There is widespread consensus that too much power sits in the centre. We can correct this imbalance by reallocating power and responsibilities between the States and Federal government by amending the list of exclusive and concurrent powers and duties of these governments to reflect current realities in the nation.” Hopefully, more political players will pay more attention to inclusion.

  • Adebule: expect more from Ambode

Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule has hailed Lagosians for their support for the Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration.

Adebule assured them that more dividends of democracy are on the way.

She attributed the success of Saturday’s All Progressives Congress (APC) congress in the state to the maturity displayed by the party’s leaders.

She noted that their insistence on equality of all members as well as free and credible congress helped the party to achieve success in the exercise.

Adebule also praised the Congress Committee for ensuring peaceful, free and credible congress.

She urged the newly elected party officials at various council areas to carry their members along and mobilise their people at the grassroots to ensure the success of the party in future elections.

Accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Aramide Giwanson, the deputy governor, who arrived at YMD Gardens, venue of the Ward ‘A’ Congress in Ojo Local Government, hailed delegates for their peaceful conducts.

Adebule proceeded to LA Primary School, Iba, venue of the Iba council Congress after monitoring the situation at Ojo Local Government Area.

She urged the people to always embrace peace and ensure that they vote only party that catered for their welfare into power.

Adebule urged Lagosians to ensure that they collect their Permanent Voters’ Card (PVC).

This, she said, will be their license to determining who should govern them in the future

  • Ambode: massive investment on health, education sectors underway

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday reiterated his administration’s commitment to massively invest in the health and education sectors of the state, saying that 2018 budget would be accounted for by projects executed in the sectors.

Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Mr Samuel Ojo at the 5th Summit of the Association of the Lagos State Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries, Governor Ambode said that the sectors have remained the key areas of his administration’s development plan.

Describing the theme of the summit entitled: “Lagos State Vision on Education and Health in Relations to the sustainable Goals”, as apt, Governor Ambode said that the sectors determine the human capital development index of any nation.

“An educated and healthy population is a great asset that can contribute effectively to wealth creation.  Great nations are not made by the quality of natural resources they are endowed with but by the quality of their human capital. In the last three years, our administration has invested heavily in the education sector to ensure that no child is left behind irrespective of their parent’s and economic status.”

The Governor assured that as a measure of premium placed on the two sectors and in line with his administration’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, he said he would ensure that plans for the two sectors are implemented.

On her par, the state’s the Head of Service, Mrs Folasade Adesoye,  said that it was crucial that education and health policies are simultaneously addressed and better coordinated to maximise gains of both sectors.

She added that the state has continued to be foremost state in the federation in term of growth and development, describing the forum as one of the key strengths.

  • Miyetti Allah to Ambode: don’t demolish abattoir

    •Abattoir an eyesore, says commissioner

The Chairman of Miyetti Allah of Nigeria, Lagos State branch, Alhaji Abdullahi Liliga, has urged the Lagos State government to rescind its decision to demolish parts of Oko-Oba in Agege.

Liliga, who spoke at the weekend at Oko-Oba abattoir, said the government should not demolish sections of the abattoir because doing so would affect operations at the place.

He said: “We have met the Commissioner for Agriculture Mr Toyin Suarau, on this matter. We are appealing to the government not to demolish parts of the abattoir.

“If it carries out this action, it will be the fifth time sections of the market will be demolished. We have been operating here since 1997. We appeal to the government to have a rethink. There is no way the government can keep cows, cattle and other domestic animals here without their owners being around. We are law-abiding citizens. We pay taxes and dues regularly. We are peaceful.”

The General-Secretary, Alhaji Mekudi Usman, said it was unfortunate that the government wanted to demolish sections of the abattoir barely a year after it carried out a similar action. The government demolished parts of the abattoir on May 14 last year. Now it wants to repeat the action. This is unfair. We beg our hardworking Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to rescind the decision.

“The government gave us this place. Why does it want to demolish it? However, if the government insists on demolishing the place, we will move our cows and other domestic animals to Lagos-Ibadan Expressway area, for easy access.”

Suarau told The Nation that Oko-Oba abattoir needed to be transformed because it was an eyesore.

He said: “Oko-Oba abattoir is an eyesore compared with Ikorodu and Mushin abattoirs. We are not driving members of Miyetti Allah of Nigeria away from Oko-Oba abattoir. The Governor only wants to modernise the place, after which the people will be allowed to return.

“In the interim, they can operate at Ikorodu and Mushin abattoirs. We are not driving them out of business. The Ambode government is for everybody, irrespective of ethnic group or religion.”

  • Lagos: Ambode commends party members

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has commended the peaceful process members of the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) conducted its ward congresses across the state.

The governor, who participated in the exercise at his Ward A6 in Epe Local Government Area, said the party had displayed high level of maturity in the conduct of party activities.

He added that members of the party, who turned out in large numbers to exercise their civil responsibility, had shown that the APC is a cohesive party.

He said: “All our great party members in Ward A6, you have done well for turning out in this number to be part of the APC ward congresses. I want to use this medium to thank you all for the orderliness and peaceful way you conducted yourself.

“We are members of the same family and that is why we are doing it in line with our constitution.

The party agreed that it is either we do election or we vote by way of consensus. And that is what we have done peacefully today.

“I want to use this opportunity to say a big thank you to all our members across the state that performed this electoral process across the 337wards in the state.

We know that the APC can get stronger if there is always peace and consensus among all our members. Like in Epe division, elections have been conducted peacefully in all other divisions. This is the most beautiful ward in Lagos State presently.

I commend all our newly elected officials. We are very lucky to have observers from INEC who have just witnessed the process of the ward congress here.

Chief Lanre Razak, speaking on the ward congress, said APC was a disciplined party, where rules are followed.

“Some people expect that we would have crisis-riddled congress but you can see for yourself that the whole process is peaceful.

‘The APC has showed that it is the party to emulate. Again there is no party that is devoid of crisis. We have a good crisis management mechanism in place.

“Our National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has been given an assignment to reconcile the party. I have every confidence that he will achieve the task given to him by President Muhammadu Buhari,” he said.

  • Promote peace, Ambode tells Methodist Bishops

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has tasked religious leaders to promote peace through their sermons.

He spoke while declaring open the 36th council of Methodist Bishops last week in Lagos.

The council with the theme strive for holiness and peace had in attendance Bishops from Dioceses of the church across the nation. It ends today.

Ambode, who was represented by His Special Adviser on Religious Matters Rev Kolawole Verralls, challenged the Bishops to use their pulpits to promote peace in the face of mindless killings across the nation.

According to him: “I request that our religious leaders should use their God-given positions and the pulpit to teach sound doctrine that would promote peace and good conduct among members of their congregations and their community.

“Given the enormous role religion plays in our lives and the influence wielded by religious leaders, you have very important roles to play in admonishing Nigerians on the need to show high level of patriotism and eschew all tendencies that may result in chaos.”

He also charged them to lend their voices to the call for greater participation in political process so as to enthrone the right people in leadership positions.
