  • Ambode: stress-free workplace ‘ll boost efficiency

Weak or ineffective management can leave employees feeling undervalued and affect their self-esteem and efficiency, Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has said.

Besides, failure to keep employees informed about significant changes to the organisation causes them stress and uncertainty about their future.

Ambode, who spoke at the Training facilitated by Human Capital Management and Solution Limited in Lagos and tagged: “Time and Stress Management Workshop”, said a stress free workplace will boost workers efficiency.

Governor Ambode, who was represented by Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Akintola Benson said senior officers of the Lagos State Civil Service are being trained on how to make the civil service as less stressful as possible for civil servants.

He listed other common causes of stress in the workplace to include multiple reporting lines for employees, with each manager asking for their work to be prioritised, poor physical working environment, excessively high workloads with insufficient workloads, lack of control over work activities, difficulty settling into a new promotion, both in terms of meeting the new role’s requirements and adapting to possible changes in relationships with colleagues.

He said concerns about job security, lack of career opportunities or level of pay, bullying or harassment, among others can also cause stress for employees.

“The state has since discovered that effectiveness in its Civil Service goes far beyond the acquisition of knowledge and job-related skills. The training is aimed at increasing knowledge and on-the-job skills for civil servants and enable them to live well-rounded lives and cope with a number of factors that are often over-looked in the quest for organisational efficiency.

“Two of such factors are time management and stress management. In today’s 24-hour, round-the-clock work engagement culture, there is a critical need to help officers of the state Civil Service learn the mechanisms for coping with the demands on time management and the consequential stress.

“It is important to recognise the common causes of stress at work so that you can take steps to reduce stress levels where possible. Workplace stress can be caused by a number of factors from heavy workloads and over-promotion to bullying and blame culture,”he added.

  • Lagos NULGE applauds Ambode for recruiting 2,300

    …Endorsement for governor

The Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has applauded Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for recruiting 2,300 local government workers.

Lagos NULGE President Afolabi Semako Ajosehaddressed his colleagues at its first quarter of local government workers’ forum held at Oriade Local Council Development Area.

He said: “We want to use this opportunity to thank our dear Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for recruiting about 2300 workers into NULGE. Initially, the governor directed 800 LAWMA (Lagos State Waste Management Authorithy) staff to be integrated as local government employees, and recruit additional 1500 which included the physically challenged. This is laudable in a society where physically challenged individuals are not too often considered for employment.

“At present, the workforce in Lagos NULGE is about 20,000; by the time we add the latest employees, the figure now stands at 22, 3000. This seems impossible considering the current economic realities. This is in sharp contrast to what is happening in other states where some governors could not pay workers’ salaries and as a result, are considering laying off staff.  Therefore, if our governor has been so magnanimous to direct that NULGE should have more employees, then we should reciprocate this gesture by contributing our various quota towards ensuring the Lagos IGR is increased.

“This is the only way by which we will not make the governor to regret his action. We therefore need to pay him back. It’s time to buckle up and redouble our efforts.  To whom much is given, much is also expected.”

He congratulated members on the forthcoming celebration of the union’s 40th anniversary.

Some of the issues deliberated upon include stagnation of health attendants and drivers; training and retraining of staff, improved attitude towards work, as well as workers due for conversion, among others.

The chairman of Oriade LCDA, Akinlola Ramotalai Olanrewaju, and All Progressives Party (APC) chairman of the council, Alhaji Aluko Abdul, endorsed Ambode for a second term, hinging their stance on the governor’s Midas touch.

“We do not need anybody to tell us what our governor is doing. When you come to Lagos, you see that Governor Ambode is doing wonderfully well in terms of infrastructural development which is visible throughout the state,” said Olanrewaju.

Residents of Ikosi Ketu also passed a vote of confidence on Ambode for a second term.

The residents, who gathered at the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat, Ketu were excited by the performance of the governor, which they described as superlative.

Addressing the gathering, the chairman of Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr. Abdulfatai Oyesanya, said Ambode’s programme had touched many lives irrespective of class.

He said the governor came on board when Nigeria was facing severe economic hardship, stressing that he was able to put Lagos economy on the world stage to assist the country.

He said: “Good governance is primarily about sound policies. About three years ago when elected, Ambode hit the ground running by tackling headlong the security challenges in Lagos.

“The impact was felt adequately and he began to overhaul the traffic management system along basic roads infrastructure that can produce significant impact for all in the transportation sector.”

Oyesanya noted that it was not easy addressing the challenges facing the metropolis, stressing that with over two million vehicles plying Lagos roads only sound economic policy could prevent infrastructural decay.

“Lagosians are true witness of the level of intervention in the area of infrastructure, economic transformation and other deliverables of his administration.

“The light up, inner/major roads construction, employment trust fund, wealth creation, civic engagement, welfare support, health provision, development of the coastal lines for tourism, and business revenue are ample evidence of where Ambode has touched.”

The council chairman said governance is about the people, noting that Ambode puts the people above other priorities.

He added the administration had transformed Lagos beyond the imagination of all, stressing that the state now compete favourably with countries doing well in the world.

“Everyone needs to feel government accordingly. Ambode is building a Lagos for all. He is building a Lagos where everyone can access opportunities for growth and development.

“Lagos today is a city of hope, a place of honour, a land of opportunity and society with class. But this is just the beginning and we as third tier of government that is close to the people can authoritatively say the synergy between the state and council is achieving excellent performance.”

He called on the people to ensure that they participate in the voters’ registration and obtain their Permanent Voters Card (PVC), to make victory for the governor easy in 2019.
