Ambode: 2018 ‘ll be successful year for APC

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday said 2018 will be another successful political year for All Progressives Congress (APC) in fulfilling its promises of developing the state.

The governor spoke in Lagos at the One Lagos Fiesta, which started on December 24 and ended yesterday at Eko Atlantic on Victoria Island.

He said: “Congratulations, Lagosians, as I welcome you into 2018.

“We have every reason to believe that this will be a remarkable and special year for every Lagosian and for our dear state.

“Without a doubt, 2018 will be a unique year in our political trajectory. The Lagos State government shall not relent in fulfilling its promises to you.

“I urge you to expect the very best this New Year, a year that holds such a great promise for all of us.”

Ambode wished every citizen, every family and every community a remarkable and prosperous year ahead.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that over 300 music artistes and comedians participated at the talent hunt competition where three people won prizes.

Ambode gave cash awards of N500,000, N1,000,000 and N1,500,000 to the third, second and first winners.

Some of the musicians at the competition included DJ Jimmy Jat, DJ Spinner, Adewale Ayuba, Humble Smith, Olamide, Wizkid, Adekunle Gold, Ice Prince Zamane and Simi, to mention a few.

David Adeleke, popularly known as ‘Davido’, during his performance told the technical department to focus the lighting on the revelers to illuminate the crowd as he wished them a happy New Year.

Mrs Angela Obey, one of the vendors, thanked Nigeria Breweries Plc for providing the venue, ice blocks and other stuffs that aided the sale of the company’s brands of drinks.

She said: “Some of my colleagues paid N75,000 for a space to do business here, but those of us selling NB products were offered spaces for free.

“NB has already taken care of all financial commitment and it just provided the enabling environment for us the retailers to take advantage of.”

NAN reports that the security at the venue was tight, while exotic fireworks illuminated the skyline as Lagosians were ushered into 2018.

  • Ambode: When performance speaks

Quite interesting, but instructive  – In the thick of the 2017 rains, a well-known blogger had taken to his Facebook page to draw the attention of the Lagos State government to the bad state of the Oba Akran stretch of the Ogba-Ikeja road. The response from Habib Aruna, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s spokesman, was quick and immediate: “Something is being done about it” .

True to those words, “something” started happening the next day, as workmen moved in with their equipment for extensive repair works on the road. Today, it may not be as smooth as every user would desire, but you no longer practically have your eyes in your hands to drive through it.

What’s the import of this narrative? First, it means that there people monitoring and not only seized of the right information, but are ready and able to supply them at all times to the public. Second, it also means that there is a government, which is not sleeping on the job, but alert to its responsibility to the people.

But that is not the end of the story. In fact, it is a tip of the iceberg in the light of what is currently going on in Lagos under the present government. To say that the entire state, has suddenly become a huge construction site, is to put it mildly.

No doubt, it is a situation that has brought with it a bitter-sweet experience, however. I’ll explain. First, the bitter side. On Wednesday, December 13, 2017, I had set out with a well-laid out plan meant to consummate the day to the fullest. Why my daughter’s school chose that particular day to vacate for Christmas, beats me. That was actually my undoing for a day I had planned to pay myself back for working so hard during the year, with substantial enjoyment. It was supposed to be the biggest party of the year to end the season. How would I know that I was entering the road on a wrong day? But I did.  Destination – Ojo – mission, to pick up the little lass from school.

I began to notice something unusual on the approach to Oshodi, through the Agege Motor Road. I was eventually confronted with the reality of the closure of the intersection leading directly into the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, due to the massive construction going on. By the time I eventually made the connection, not being too good with my geography along that axis, I had lost more than hour already.

Again, on eventually hitting the road, I realised I had to make a detour at Second Rainbow, towards FESTAC, the only saving grace on that expressway, since tankers and trucks have completely blocked the remaining portion from there through Mile 2 to Apapa. Unfortunately, it was the same day that a fuel tanker exploded into fire on that axis, which forced motorists back on the other side of the road. That was how the drive which usually took less than 20minutes ended up taking three hours. Of course, the major culprit was the huge construction going on Mile 2-Badagry road.

To cut the long story short, I eventually arrived the party at the time the tables were being cleared. The heaps of bones being emptied into the waste bags, apparently for dog owners and the empty bottles, literally told the rest of the story. Not that I didn’t try to make it by all means. Knowing that returning through Oshodi would have been suicidal, I had tried the Iyana-Iba-Igando-Iyana Ipaja axis. But again, Ambode’s huge construction from Amuwo Odofin down to Volkswagen and more along that stretch, took care of that.

Like many on that road that day and many more before and after, I did not harbour any sadness or make any untoward utterance, even amid massive frustration, owing to the energy-sapping and grueling experience, because I knew the implication. What is a day’s loss of enjoyment, compared to the long term benefits of what is in the offing?

In the main, the complete story is that in the last two years or so, whilst many of his contemporaries are either offering one excuse or the other for their horse and buggy pace performance or engaging in needless political undertakings in preference to real governance, Ambode, has continued to move with a jet-like speed, in his determination to create mega city that he promised the people as his dream Lagos.

The result is that each way you look, wherever you go, the bulldozers are eating up the earth to set up the monumental structures that can compare, perhaps only to the First Republic, when men of vision and mission were in charge of Nigeria.

Now, emerging solutions are confronting hitherto intractable problems. Who would have thought that the people on the Lekki-Epe express could have such new lease of life in so short a time or their counterparts on the Iyana-Ipaja-Abule Egba stretch? But before their very eyes, in their own lifetimes, practical solutions are already coming. Gradually, Lagos is taking shape in grand style.

Visit Epe through Lekki. Be there at Tafawa Belewa Square or Tinubu Square or Broad Street and see the transformation. Go to Abule Egba. Visit Berger bus terminal on the Lagos-Ibadan stretch. Visit the network of roads and Link Bridge within the Aboru and Abesan communities in Alimosho council area and confirm for yourself the boldness of Ambode’s ideas.

Yet, there are many that are not yet eye-marked. You perhaps need to be sick to witness the monumental transformation in the health system of the state or be a journalist to notice the monumental work at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre at the Government House, Alausa or require one service or the other to experience the new ease of doing business in the Lagos civil service.  Of course, for the naysayers, who are wont to point out that Lagos is the richest state in Nigeria, and therefore could afford the projects he is embarking upon, they should also advert their minds to the other uses Ambode and those in his shoes could have put the huge resources.

What stops the Lagos governor from using the money to expand his political frontiers? Why would he not be interested in who becomes the next governor of Akwa-Ibom State or Kaduna or Ebonyi, so that by the time he is through, he would have built a formidable political empire that would catapult him to Nigerian presidency in a jiffy? Have other governors, some with half or less the resources of Lagos, not pursued such a phantom project in the past?

That is the difference. Instead of following that course that has led many to damnation, he chose differently. The fact that very little is heard of him in terms of politics, bespeaks of a single-minded determination for public good rather than pursuit of ephemeral fantasies. That’s the difference.

Interestingly, again, whilst many of Ambode’s counterparts would have mounted the rooftops to celebrate what he has done during this period if they as much as managed to achieve that record in the eight years. Yet, he sees them as “modest achievements,” as he depicted during the 2017 Christmas party message to Lagosians.

Hear him: “I want to use this opportunity to once again, express this administration’s profound gratitude to you all for your support which is the cornerstone of the modest achievements we have recorded in the outgoing year. I want to assure you that our Lagos project is on course and we are gradually and steadily moving towards actualizing the dream of building a State that works for all.”

How could anybody have described the monumental transformation Lagos has gone through in the past two years as a modest achievement? Of course, the answer is yet, in what many Nigerians lack – humility.

That Ambode is not only the poster-boy of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is no longer in doubt. What remains to be seen is whether he and what he is making of Lagos would be the only thing left of the party to campaign with in 2019, given the picture elsewhere in the country.

Ambode’s wife welcomes first babies of the year

The Lagos State Governor’s wife, Mrs Bolanle Ambode has welcomed the first babies of the year-a set of twins.

The twins, a male and female were delivered at Ikorodu General Hospital, Lagos.

The female was delivered at 12.23am, while the male was delivered at 3:29am to Mr and Mrs Adeoye Kehinde.

This is the first time the programme will be held in Ikorodu.

Mrs Ambode who is a mother of twins, expressed delight at the safe arrival and encouraged all mothers across the state to ensure their babies are given the routine immunization so their babies and children across the state can be healthy and disease free, especially of all the childhood diseases.

The second baby of the year, baby Ibhadon was delivered at Gbagada Hospital through normal delivery.

The baby, a male was normal delivery weighing 3.36kg at 12.05.

Speaking while presenting gifts to first babies of the year at three General Hospitals in the State, Mrs Ambode said just like the new year, the birth of a new baby brings hope, and such was why adequate care must be accorded newborns.

According to her, “The arrival of a new born generally symbolizes passing the baton to the next generation. In our culture as in many others, a new baby is a messenger of hope, indicating good fortune for the family and society.

“From the depths of my heart, I congratulate and rejoice with the happy parents. As I do so however, I wish to emphasize that post-natal care of the baby is just as important as the ante-natal.

“Therefore, mothers must take all necessary steps to ensure the well-being and good health of their babies. These include strict obedience of instructions of the medical personnel, as well as good care and attention to themselves,” she said.

The wife of the Governor specifically urged nursing mothers to take advantage of the primary healthcare centres provided by the State Government to ensure full complement of routine immunization for their children, and as well make good use of family planning.

Mrs Ambode said she was aware of the fact that the present administration in the State placed high premium on health issues especially maternal and infant health, saying that as part of contribution to health sector, the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), a group which she chaired, provided high dependency units, neonatal care units, and other medical equipment and resources to enhance the quality of maternal and child care services, assuring that more would be done in 2018.

She also commended the health family in the State for the progressive improvement in health service delivery to the people, just as she appreciated corporate donors, philanthropists and Non-Governmental Organizations for their support.

“We also commend the unitring commitment of this administration to continous infrastructure upgrade, provision of modern equipment and human resource development in the health sector,” Mrs Ambode said.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris said the event was symbolic being the first activity of government in the year and also exemplifying the priority given to healthcare delivery in the State.

He assured that with the exemplary leadership of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, the State Government would continue to stimulate the required quality of health service delivery that is poised to address existing health gaps as well as challenges that might emerge in future.

Besides, Idris urged the people to embrace healthy lifestyle, refrain from excessive alcohol, smoking and ensure their environment is clean.

Also, Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Health, Hon Segun Olulada called for strengthening of the referral system to reduce pressure on General Hospitals, saying people should imbibe the culture of first visiting Primary Healthcare centres which have been repositioned in the State.

He expressed optimism that the State Health Insurance Scheme billed to start this year will expand access to healthcare.

2018 holds great promises for lagosians – Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Sunday expressed optimism that 2018 holds great promises for Lagos and Lagosians, assuring that the State will record landmark achievements in major sectors of the economy in the New Year.

…Says Critical Projects’ll Be Delivered Next Year

Governor Ambode, in his New Year message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, said that while the outgoing year witnessed a massive leap in terms of infrastructural development in the State, some of the reforms in key sectors of the economy will take full flight from the beginning of 2018.

‘We have good reason to be very optimistic about what 2018 holds in stock for our State and every Lagosian. The commencement and realisation of some of our reform programmes especially in the Public Transport, Environment, Tourism and Health sectors will transform the landscape of the State and improve the quality of lives of all Lagosians,” he said.

Governor Ambode said his administration will not rest on its oars, but will continue to up the ante on infrastructural renewal, noting that the 2018 budget of N1.046trillion which is currently at the House of Assembly for approval will be dedicated majorly to completing some critical projects currently ongoing as well as commence some new ones.

Some of the key projects, the Governor listed includes the Oshodi Transport Interchange, reconstruction of the Oshodi International Airport Road, Pen Cinema Flyover, 181 Local Government Roads and other network of roads.

“Given the fact that 2018 will be last full fiscal year of this administration’s four year tenure, our major focus will be the completion of most of the ongoing projects. We will also pursue the objective of strengthening the financial base of our State through various measures aimed at boosting the States Internally Generated Revenue. We believe very strongly that this is achievable without necessarily increasing taxes but by widening the tax base and ensuring that all revenues due to the State are collected through technologically driven tax collection and management system,” the Governor said.

Ambode urged residents to continue to support his administration’s quest to transform the nook and crannies of the State for good by voluntarily paying their taxes as and when due.

“The dream of a new Lagos which we all desire is unfolding and we all have a role to play in this project. Our government is open to new ideas and partnerships, and we will welcome suggestions for better ways to do things and improve on service delivery to the people. We will continue to provide responsible and responsive leadership which is the hallmark of sustainable development in modern, functional and liveable cosmopolitan city like Lagos,” the Governor said.

  • Lagos fiesta: Ambode, sponsors promise spectacular grand finale

The Lagos State Government yesterday promised Lagosians and visitors a world-class, spectacular finale for the ongoing One Lagos Fiesta holding simultaneously across the five divisions of the state. An array of A-list artistes, a new set of talented youths that emerged from the Lagos Grows Talent (LGT) competition and a spectacular display of fireworks are some of the “special effects” lined up for the countdown concert, which will usher in the new year and draw the star-studded fiesta to a close at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island, Agege Stadium, Ikorodu Town Hall, Badagry Grammar School and Epe Marina waterfront.

In a press statement signed by the State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the 8-Day, 5-Centre fiesta has again highlighted Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s passionate commitment to the promotion of art and culture, development of entertainment and tourism and using the creative sector to engage and empower the teeming youths in the state.

An estimated 300,000 people have thronged the five locations of the fiesta on a daily basis in a multi-dimensional arrangement that has made it Africa’s biggest end-of-the-year artistic event. “It is a fiesta that has provided direct, indirect and induced jobs to more than 6,000 people like musicians, dancers, technicians, stall owners, brand ambassadors, food and beverage sellers as well as security guards and transport services owners,” Ayorinde said.

He added that the Victoria Island zone for tomorrow’s grand finale will hold inside the sprawling Eko Atlantic City as against the Bar Beach end where the first seven days fiesta held since December 24. According to the Commissioner, the fiesta train is needed to move from Bar Beach to Eko Atlantic City in order to better appreciate the spectacular display of fireworks that will herald the New Year at exactly 12 midnight today.

He assured that adequate parking provision has been made for those coming in their cars while shuttle buses would be available at the Bar Beach end from 6pm to take guests into the Eko Atlantic venue where some of Nigeria’s biggest artistes like King Sunny Ade, Wizkid, Davido, Olamide, Falz the Bad Guy, Adekunle Gold, Simi, Humble Smith and Osupa Saheed, among others, will stage a world-class performance that will be broadcast live on various national and international television and online stations.

Ayorinde added that the same high standard that will be experienced at Eko Atlantic will be seen at the other four venues to give Lagosians a memorable countdown/crossover night experience, in tandem with Governor Ambode’s electoral promise that every part of the state would be carried along in all of government activities. “The governor is impressed and happy that citizens’ participation in the fiesta has been exemplary across the five zones and that in spite of the unprecedented turn-out, crowd control has been effective; people have conducted themselves responsibly and no untoward incident has happened,” he said.

The statement conveyed the governor’s best wishes to Lagosians and urged them to continue in this orderly and peaceful manner till the end of the fiesta tomorrow.

The governor also expressed gratitude to NB Plc, South Energy X, Eko Atlantic, GTBank, Access Bank Plc, Eko Hotels Ltd, Pepsi, Dangote Group and JMG, among other sponsors and partners whose support has not only made the OLF 2017 incomparable, but has also further developed the creative economy of the state.

Ambode solicits support for vulnerable children

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has called on the stakeholders and private sector to partner with the government to harness potential embedded in vulnerable children.

Their God given talents, he said will contribute immensely to state and national development.

Ambode was represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf at the year Christmas Carol/Concert in Alausa. He said supporting vulnerable children will help them attain their dreams and goals in life.

Society, he said, owes the children right of moulding them into independent and responsible adults through provision of basic needs, building God-trust, and encouraging them irrespective of their status.

“Let’s all encourage these children and give them assurance that they can think creatively and critically. Through these they will become problem solver which will translate into development of our nation,” he said.

“We are committed to improving lives of citizenry. We will continue ensuring Lagos is an accessible society for all, where children are independent,” he added.

Ambode stated his administration will continue working towards zero tolerance for insecurity of the residents especially children, who are the future of the nation.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Hakeem Muri-Okunola said the event was to help the children showcasing their talents.

He said vulnerable children’s welfare which includes education, shelter and other basic needs catered by the government are to ensure children grow in a beautiful environment.

  • Community pledges support for Ambode on project

Residents of Igbogbo community in Igbogbo-Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State have pledged their support for the ongoing construction of Igbogbo-Bola Ahmed Tinubu/Igbe Road in Ikorodu.

They thanked Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for bringing the project to the town.

The residents, during a stakeholders’ meeting at the palace of Adeboruwa of Igbogbo, admitted that it was painful to see some structures paved way for the road construction.

Their support for the road project, they said, was based on the need to join hand with the government to open the town up for development.

They said anyone or group that opposed the road project was acting alone, adding that they would support the government till the project is completed.

The meeting was organised against the backdrop of opposition mounted against the project by some groups.

The Adeboruwa of Igbogbo, Oba Semiudeen Orimadegun Kasali, said the meeting was to engage residents on the need to adopt a resolution in support of the project. He warned antagonists against misinforming the residents about the construction.

Asiwaju of Igbogbo Kingdom and former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Olorunfunmi Basorun, wondered why some residents opposed the project initiated by the governor. Noting that the gains the projects would bring to the town would be more than the pain, Basorun, a member of Governor’s Advisory Council, said the seven kilometres road project was initiated as part of the government’s plan to decongest the major highway.

Basorun warned the people he called “fifth columnists” not to jeopardise the ongoing construction.

Special Adviser to Lagos Governor on Housing, Mrs Adebimpe Akinsola, appealed to aggrieved groups to support the project, saying: “rejecting the project would not be in the interest of the people that have been craving for development.”

She assured the Igbogbo residents of Ambode’s readiness to compensate all residents whose properties were demolished for the road project.

Akinsola said: “Every family affected by the construction will be compensated. The four-man committee set up by the town to liaise with the government has been briefed about compensation.”

The community after the meeting thanked the governor for approving construction of the road that will pass through Igbogbo, Igbe and Ijede.

“We stand by the government in the current phase of demolition of structures to pave way for the project. We believe the completion of the project will bring gains. We have emphasised that the government would not delay payment of compensation of those affected by the demolition. We passionately appeal that the government should give this a priority.

“We shall not shirk in our responsibilities to keep peace in Igbogbo,” they said.

Others at the meeting included All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Chief Adenrele Olowu, member representing Ikorodu II in the Lagos House of Assembly, Nurudeen Solaja-Saka, Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA Chairman Olusesan Daini, councillors, traditional chiefs, traders, among others.

  • Ambode, Wike preach love, friendship, peace

Ambode, Wike preach love, friendship, peace

Governors Akinwumi Ambode (Lagos) and Nyesom Ezenwo Wike (Rivers) have urged  Nigerians to use this year’s Christmas to promote love, friendship, peace and reconciliation.

Ambode, in his Christmas message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Habib Aruna, said the season symbolises love, care and compassion for persons, especially the weak, vulnerable and less-privileged.

According to him, his message to everyone at this period is to put a smile on the face of persons who may not necessarily be able to pay them back.

“Christmas is a season that explains the depth of God’s love for mankind and exemplary sacrifice that we should emulate in our relationship with our neighbours irrespective of status and creed.

“This season is another opportunity to increase our acts of kindness and touch the less privileged in our society.

“Therefore, this Christmas means so much more than just mere merriment. It is a veritable avenue to extend love to the less-privileged who are disadvantaged in several ways.

“In this special season therefore, I urge you all to spread love and be our brother’s keeper. Let us reach out to those who struggle to provide for their families. Let us put smiles on the faces of the weak and vulnerable. This is the real essence of Christmas,” Ambode said.

He said the last 12 months brought about different challenging situations which combined to make both residents and the state stronger, just as he expressed optimism that Lagos would get even better in the New Year.

“Our hope is based on our unshaken faith in the grace of God, the solid foundation which we have laid in terms of infrastructure development and renewal.

“It is also based on the policies and programmes which we have put in place to positively impact on the social and economic well being of our people,” he said.

Ambode commended residents for the peaceful atmosphere the state had enjoyed over the years and urged them to emulate Jesus Christ and embrace peace and continue to pray for continued peace in the state.

“We shall continue to pray for continued peace in Lagos; we shall continue to pray for increased prosperity of our people.

“We shall not relent in our prayers for Lagos to continue in its path of accelerated and unprecedented growth and we shall look forward to more of your prayers, now, in the New Year and beyond.

“Our government appreciates the spirit of tolerance and cooperation which has provided the enabling environment for growth and development in Lagos State.

In a Christmas Message, Wike said the season exemplifies love, advising that Nigerians should always  love one another.

He urged Rivers people to use this year’s Christmas to erect  platforms  of love, peace  and reconciliation for the greater development of the state.

The governor advised Rivers people to pray for the state to enjoy greater peace for the state government  to consolidate on her developmental programmes  that have made the state first amongst equals.

He assured the people of the state that he would remain  focused in his delivery of pro-people projects and programmes to improve their standard of living. .
