  • Ambode: Endgame drama

It is interesting that Governor of Lagos State Akinwunmi Ambode’s defeat in the October 2, 2018 All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary is still controversial. He lost the primary after his party’s leadership had said his administration was a one-man show.  Ambode’s loss continues to produce drama after drama.

The January 8  Lagos APC campaign launch at the Skypower Ground,  Ikeja, which was  attended by Ambode and the APC governorship candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, ended in chaos. At least one person was reported killed and three journalists were injured in the confusion that followed gunshots at the venue.

A report said: “Lagos State Police Command thereafter declared the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Lagos State Auditor Mustapha Adekunle aka Sego wanted for “attempting to disrupt the rally.” Adekunle described the action as a “frame-up.”

NURTW members accused Commissioner of Police Imohimi Edgal of bias.  The Organising Secretary, Berger Unit in Oshodi, Semiu Omosansan, was quoted as saying: “In a situation like this, we expect that the Commissioner of Police will carry out thorough and unbiased investigations in dealing with the case… We implore the CP to get his facts right.”

About a week later, there was news of Edgal’s redeployment. He was to be replaced by Kayode Egbetokun, reports said. Those interested in cause and effect connected the development with alleged poor performance by the police when violence erupted at the APC rally.  But power didn’t change hands.  Edgal told reporters:  “Well, there is a directive that the status quo should remain till further notice… we were about concluding the handing over and taking over procedure when we were instructed by our bosses from Abuja to suspend action for now. So, there is no change of guard for now.”

The reversal of Edgal’s redeployment, following the appointment of Acting Inspector General Mohammed Adamu, was an eye-opener.  The Nation columnist, Segun Ayobolu, said in his January 19 column: “Unfortunately, all kinds of conspiracy theories are being read into his perceived lukewarm attitude to providing maximum security at the Sky Power Ground, venue of the APC flag off campaign rally. For instance, one theory has it that as a school mate and close friend of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Edgal was piqued at the governor’s loss in his party’s primaries and was thus part of a plot to cause mayhem at the rally in order to create the impression of the APC as a fractious and badly divided party going into the elections.”

Ayobolu argued: “Of course, there is no way to prove this kind of allegation but such insinuations and speculations are bound to arise when such a grave security lapse occurs on the watch of a CP who is otherwise highly experienced and competent.”

If “this kind of allegation” can’t be proved, why does Ayobolu seem to believe it anyway?  Ayobolu stopped short of saying Edgal had plotted the disruption with the disrupters.  In Ayobolu’s view, this singular disruption is sufficient to prompt a call for Edgal’s removal: “Can critical and substantial sections of the political class trust Imohimi Edgal to be a dispassionate professional in Lagos in the forthcoming election? I doubt it. Just as under his watch gun totting hoodlums and rival NURTW factions could have easy access into the venue of a political rally to kill, maim and cause mayhem, can Imohimi Edgal be trusted to maintain law and order and enforce the peace on election day? I doubt it. Edgal’s professionalism, objectivity and emotional detachment are badly tainted. He has become a liability rather an asset to the NPF in Lagos.”

Another kind of drama was on stage when a member of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the APC in Lagos State, Chief Lanre Razaq, appealed to party members and people in Epe to stop destroying and defacing Sanwo-Olu’s campaign posters. Razaq said at a January 23 stakeholders’ meeting at Jubilee Chalets in Epe: “The party has chosen the person it wants to fly the governorship flag in the election as Ambode’s tenure expires by May this year. The party says he cannot have a second term and has chosen Sanwo-Olu. There is nothing we can do about it because the party has the final say. Even if we are angry and we fight, there is nothing we can do. The anger is much because our son was dropped. Yes, we are all angry, but there is nothing we can do about it. The party has decided; all we can do is to support the party’s position.”

Razaq added: “Let us not bring any suffering upon ourselves. We have a lot of work to do. If we don’t support the party, all the uncompleted projects in Epe will stop and we shall suffer for it. There is nothing anybody can do at this point. Let us rethink about our anger and act more reasonably and support the party. If we remain angry and say no, others will take advantage of it and we shall be the losers. The party expects 92,000 votes from Epe; let us give them 120,000 votes instead.”

A January 21 report captured yet another drama: “The much- awaited presentation of Lagos State 2019 budget… at the House of Assembly by Governor    Akinwunmi Ambode failed to hold. Although the governor’s advance team arrived at the Assembly around 3pm raising hope Ambode was on his way for the presentation, the team left the Assembly premises around 4pm before plenary even commenced with the lawmakers said to be in a parliamentary session.”

The report continued: “Sources at the Assembly hinted that the governor was not there to present the budget but to hold a meeting with the lawmakers, which was why the governor’s press crew and advance team were directed back to their beats. When the lawmakers  eventually held plenary, nothing about the budget or the governor’s visit came up for discussion.”

As Ambode’s May exit date approaches, the endgame drama further highlights his failure in the primary election. For the outgoing governor, it is a dim       ending to a bright beginning.  The lesson: In party        politics, “inclusion” isn’t just a slogan.

  • Ambode advises armed forces, security agencies on abuses

Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode yesterday advised members of the Armed Forces and security agencies to respect human rights and improve their understanding of the tenets and principles of the rule of law.

This, he said, would guarantee cordial civil/armed forces relationship.

The governor spoke when declaring open a two-day National Workshop on: “Citizen in Uniform; Implementing rule of Law and Human Rights in the Armed Forces”.

It was organised by the Ministry of Defence at Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Ikeja, Lagos.

Represented by his deputy, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule, Ambode said the workshop was apt because there was need to strengthen the capacity of the armed forces and other security agencies to understand the rule of law and observe the tenets of human rights in dealing with their personnel and the civilians.

“By fulfilling their national security functions, security agencies play a key role in enabling an environment in which the rule of law is maintained. The fundamental role of any government is to guarantee the welfare and security of citizens. To this extent, security agencies represent an institution and an instrument through which this overriding responsibility of government is achieved,” he said.

The governor hailed members of the armed forces and security agencies for giving their best to ensure peace.

He urged them to always remember that they are bound by the rules of law and constitution while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

Ambode cautioned them to act professionally with great care for the rule of law and rights of the citizenry while performing their duties.

He enjoined the public to support and pray for the success of the armed forces and other security agencies in their efforts at restoring peace and bringing stability to the country, noting:  ”A threat to life and safety of the armed forces must be seen as a threat to the stability of the society as a whole”

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, had said the workshop was aimed at strengthening the capacity of the participants at the strategic level to contribute to the ongoing professional understanding and application of human rights and the rule of law in administering justice to security personnel.

He added that the workshop would provide intellectual impetus that would boost and sustain mutual trust and understanding between security forces and the civilian populace to safeguard the internal security, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

In order to avoid abuses and unfriendly civil/military relations at all times, the Chief of Defence Staff noted that there was the need to prudently interrogate the contradictions inherent in the campaign of violence by the adversary forces.

  • Ambode fails to present Lagos 2019 budget

The much- awaited presentation of Lagos State 2019 budget on Monday at the state House of Assembly by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode failed to hold.

Although the governor’s advance team arrived at the Assembly around few minutes to 3pm raising hope Ambode was on his way for the presentation, the team left the Assembly premises around 4pm before plenary even commenced with the lawmaker said to be in a parliamentary session.

Sources at the Assembly hinted the governor was not there to present budget but hold have a meeting with the lawmakers, which was why the governor’s press crew and advance team were directed back to their beats.

When the lawmakers eventually held plenary, nothing about the budget or the governor’s visit came up for discussion.

Information had gone round at the weekend that Ambode would present the 2019 budget on Monday after the governor could not present it in December 2018 because the lawmakers were on recess.

Journalists covering the State Governor and the House of Assembly had been on standby since 8.00 am for plenary to commence and Ambode to appear for the presentation.

At around 2:30pm, the governor’s press corps was hurriedly conveyed to the Assembly following information Ambode was on the way to the Assembly to present the 2019 appropriation bill.

The advanced team of the governor was already on ground while the anti-bomb vehicle was stationed at the Assembly’s car park, while policemen could be seen around the premises, raising expectation that Ambode would present the budget unfailingly.

At the Assembly’s lobby, journalists covering the governor’s office after waiting for about 30 minutes were told by a police officer, who claimed to be the ‘OC’ of the House, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa informed they should leave the premises as the House would not take the governor’s budget presentation as earlier expected.

He said the Speaker was having a private meeting with other lawmakers and would not want to be disturbed.

He insisted the speaker said the budget presentation would not be taken and ordered the pressmen to leave.

Another aide to the speaker, who craved anonymity, confirmed the Assembly would not take the governor’s budget.

However, sources close to the governor said Ambode informed the lawmakers since Friday that he would be coming to present the budget on Monday following successful resolution of the differences between the two arms, which hampered the presentation last year.

The source said the lawmakers were engrossed in a meeting to iron out some differences among themselves.

  • 2019: Buhari remains best choice for Nigeria – Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has reiterated his position that President Muhammadu Buhari, who is flag-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 16 Presidential election, remains the best choice for Nigeria to move forward to the next level.

Cornered by journalists at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, venue of a Presidential rally, Governor Ambode said President Buhari in the last three and half years has set the nation on a trajectory of reviving its glorious days, adding it was expedient for him to consolidate on the achievements with another term of four years.

“The choice before Nigerians is simple; to go back to the days of corruption, infrastructural decay and insecurity or continue with the trajectory of infrastructural development, steady anti-corruption war and the constant fight against territorial threats. This is what the Buhari and Osinbajo ticket represents.

They have initiated social inclusion policies and constructed critical infrastructure across the federation which is gradually bringing back the nation’s economy in the right path and giving Nigerians a real sense of belonging. This is the way we want to go and Nigerians have shown that this is where they are going to go,” the Governor said.

He said the unprecedented crowd that thronged out to witness the APC Presidential rally in Kaduna was a testament to the fact that Nigerians are fully in support of President Buhari’s government and are going to go all out to renew his mandate come February 16, 2019.

“What we saw in Kaduna was unprecedented, just look at the crowd and the way they came out in droves.

The passion, the trust and support that the Nigerian people have for Buhari is unrivalled and iconic. People just love Buhari; they trust him because he has performed well in the last three and half years, together with the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, they have delivered on their electoral promises and what is in the APC manifesto,” Governor Ambode said.

He urged supporters of the party to remain focused and not be distracted by the campaign of calumny the opposition parties have decided to harp on rather than focus on issues affecting Nigeria, saying that President Buhari has remained focus to deliver a new Nigeria that would take its rightful place among the comity of nations.

“We are not deterred by all the false narratives the opposition are spreading; we would rather focus on the issues and these issues are basically on how to make the life of Nigerians better,” he added.

  • Pray for soldiers in theatres of war — Ambode

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwummi Ambode, on Tuesday urged Nigerians to continue to pray for soldiers currently in theatres of war.

Ambode, who made the call during the annual Nigerian Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, also assured families of fallen heroes of the state’s continued support.

The governor was represented by his deputy, Mrs Oluranti Adebule.

“We still remember the sad memories of the civil war where lives were lost and properties were destroyed across the land.

“I call on every Nigerian to rise and support our men and women engaged in theatres of war with prayers to achieve resounding victory over those who threaten peace and national sovereignty.

“We also use the opportunity to reassure the families left behind that we remain committed to their welfare and well-being,’’ he said.

Ambode used the medium to commend the officers and men of the armed forces currently engaged in different military exercises and congratulated the legionnaires for this year’s Remembrance Day.

“I commend the officers and men of the armed forces who are engaged in one military exercise or the other combating insurgency and other threats to our territorial integrity.

“We remain grateful to you for your bravery and patriotism to put your lives on the line for our country.

“May the souls of the departed continue to rest in peace. We will not forget, we shall not forget your contributions,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the governor’s representative laid the official wreath and released the pigeons which are usually the highlights of the ceremony.

Service commanders of military and para-military formations in the state, among other notable Nigerians , also laid wreaths at the event.

  • K1 did not abuse Ambode, says Publicist

The Publicist of Fuji maestro Wasiu Ayinde, Kunle Raheed, has denied the musician abused Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode during the rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Skypower Grounds, Ikeja Government Reservation Area (GRA) last Tuesday.

Rasheed said the track people were referring to has nothing to do with Ambode.

“If you check the new album he made for (Babajide) Sanwo-Owu, that track is there. He even sang the track long before the crisis started. The track is all about APC and the party’s governorship candidate,” he said.

On why K1 continued singing while Ambode was making his speech, Rasheed described it as normal practice.

“If you are at the APC Convention in Abuja, the instruction was that as soon as someone is introduced, K1 will sing.

“Same thing happened at the Skypower Grounds. K1 started singing when Governor Ambode handed the party’s flag to Sanwo-Olu and that has nothing to do with the crisis,” he said.

According to him, the crisis was purely union matter between Azeez Lawal (a.k.a Kunle Poly) and Adekunle Mustapha (Sego).

He said: “Both of them had issues on K1’s stage and K1 waded into the matter. At a point, Mustapha left the stage. Not quite long. MC Oluomo (Musiliu Akinsanya, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) State Treasurer) came on stage and exchanged greetings with K1, NURTW State Chairman, Tajudeen Agbede.

“As at that time, the boys of Sego and Kunle Poly had started fighting on the ground. So, it was not safe for MC Oluomo to leave the stage until one of Kunle Poly’s boys came on stage and threatened to kill MC Oluomo with a dagger.

“Agbede slapped him three times and chased him away. K1 also joined him to chase away from the stage.

“He later returned to the stage and stabbed MC Oluomo and one Abija. That was how it happened.”

According to him, if not for K1, the crisis would have been bigger as he was repeatedly talking to both warring parties to douse the tension.

“I was on the stage with them. I was there all through. K1 tried his best to resolve the crisis between the NURTW leaders over the State Chairmanship tussle even before that rally.

“People should stop accusing K1 of not doing enough to resolve their crisis. Also, he didn’t abuse or insulted Governor Ambode as some are peddling,” he said.

  • Ambode preaches peace at Remembrance Day service

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday enjoined the people to work together and pray for peace and development.

Speaking at the Armed Forces Remembrance Day service held at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Ikeja, he said the event was another reminder of the sacrifices made by the ex-service men and gallant fallen heroes for the country’s unity.

Represented by Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations Mr. Oluseye Oladejo, Ambode urged Nigerians to tolerate one another, “as the consequences of war are always devastating.”

Praying for the safe return of those on the battlefields, the governor besought God to give succour to injured soldiers, bless the souls of the departed and comfort the bereaved families.

Ministry of Home Affairs Permanant Secretary Mrs. Toyin Awoseyi said Ambode “has always been supportive in promoting the welfare of the legionnaires and families of fallen uniform men.”

“For instance, in 2017, he gave N5 million and in 2018, he gave N25 million along with a trailer load of bags of rice, among others, to them. The governor’s other interventions to improve the condition of ex-service men and that of families of fallen heroes were medical assistance, empowerment and employment opportunities,” she said.

The State Legionaries Chairman, Col. Samuel Akande (retd), prayed for his late colleagues and their families.

The chief officiating minister, Revd Olu Oladokun, prayed for peace in Lagos and Nigeria.

  • Video: Osinbajo, Ambode, Sanwo-Olu canvass support for Buhari

Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo has urged the people of Alimosho Local Government to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari, for continuity of good governance.

Osinbajo, along with Governor Akinwumi Ambode and the governorship candidate of  All Progressives Congress( APC) in Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu appealed to the people to vote the party’s candidates in the forthcoming elections.

Speaking to the crowd at Greenland Stadium in Abesan Estate, Ipaja,  Osinbajo urged party members to work tirelessly for President Buhari and other candidates’ victory during the polls.

He said: ‘’Alimosho is very crucial to APC as the largest local government with votes in Lagos State. There are votes in Alimosho. We should all go out and vote on February 16 for Buhari. We are expecting large votes from Alimosho, which has the largest voting population,” he said.

In his address, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said: “Alimosho votes are very crucial to APC’s victory. We should all go out and vote enmasse for President Buhari and other APC candidates in February 16 elections. We should also vote for Sanwo-Olu and other APC candidates on March 2.

“You can see all of us coming together to campaign. It is a complete house and we are all united to work for APC’s victory in Lagos State.”

Also speaking, Lagos APC governorship candidate, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu urged the residents of Alimosho to vote for all APC candidates.

“The Vice President is here to visit us in our neighborhood. We are here to campaign for President Buhari. We should come out enmasse and vote for Buhari in February 16 and vote for all APC candidates in the February 16 and March 2 elections,” he said.

The senator representing Lagos West Senatorial District, Solomon Adeola said Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration had performed creditably and should be reelected.

His words: “We are all here to solicit your votes for President Buhari and other APC candidates in February 16 and March 2 elections.

“We are all aware of APC programmes and laudable achievements since 2015 till date. We have performed better than what previous administration did in 16 years.”

  • Ambode: 820 buses for scheme take off in March

The bus reform project, initiated to redefine public transportation and make Lagos State globally competitive, will take off in March, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said. It will begin with 820 high and medium capacity buses.

Speaking during inspection of some projects, said under the project, 5,000 buses would be injected and modern terminals built to facilitate movement and boost the economy, among others.

At the assemby plant at Awoyaya in Ibeju Lekki, where 500 of the 820 buses are being kept, he hoped that the buses would be rolled out after the elections.

The buses are equipped with cameras, USB point, Internet, television and special spaces for the physically-challenged, expectant mothers and the aged, among others.

“This is an assemby plant. The dream is that beyond the procurement of 820 buses by the government, the next set of buses should be assembled in Lagos in this assemby plant and another one in Epe.

“That is the dream. The whole project is scalable and in this scale right now, we would run with the 820. You have seen the maintenance workshops and all that, and then the next scale, which is the next phase, is for Nigerians to be able to assemble the buses in Lagos and then we create employment opportunities and also allow the gross domestic product (GDP) of Lagos to grow.

“The buses are ready and we think with everything we have done, we should be able to roll out these buses maybe immediately after the elections,” the governor said in a issued statement yesterday.

He said the private sector would be involved in the project in order to get more buses as the proposed 5000 were not enough.

“What has happened is that the government has gone ahead to procure these buses, using its funds. The buses are being owned by a government company called Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL). So, the LBSL will lease these buses to operators, who will use the three depots at Oshodi, Anthony and Yaba to ensure that the buses are sustained and maintained properly so that they don’t get wasted before their lifespan expires.

“By the time you put these buses on the road, it will create jobs for drivers, engineers, technicians, and so on, thereby growing the economy. So, the idea is to create jobs, grow the economy, make the city to be globally competitive and make life comfortable for the people.”

Other projects inspected are Oshodi Transport Interchange, which is 85 per cent completed; bus depots in Oshodi, Yaba and Oyingbo to be ready in March; International Airport Road to be ready early May and Oshodi-Abule Egba Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor to be delivered in April.

The bus depots are equipped with  offices dormitories, 30,000 litres underground tank, 30, 000 litres overhead tank, automated and elevated car wash, toilets, fuel dump, utility buildings and central workshop for spare parts and operational offices, and maintance equipment.

Ambode, who harped on continuity, said the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, would adopt the projects.
