Ambode signs N25bn ETF bill into law

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Tuesday signed into law the N25 billion Employment Trust Fund (ETF) bill, aimed at tackling the high rate of unemployment in the state.

Ambode said at the Lagos House, Ikeja, that the signing was a milestone of his administration to tackle the challenges of unemployment through granting of soft loans to individuals for the purpose of making them self-employed, to create wealth.

He said one of the promises he made to residents during his campaign was to set up an ETF scheme to address the challenges of unemployment in the state.

“Each year, the state government will inject N6.25 billion into the fund for a period of four years, making it N25 billion cumulatively,” he said

According to him, a board of trustees will be announced in due course to manage the fund.

He said that members of the board would be outside the purview of government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ambode, in November 2015, sent the ETF bill to the State House of Assembly for approval.

The fund is aimed at transforming employment creation in the state over the next four years.

It will be administered as soft loans to bona fide residents of the state who desire facilities between N100, 000 and N1 million or more.

The fund will be administered through an independent Trust backed by an efficient structure that will disburse the funds.

The Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, created in June by the governor, will oversee the affairs of the scheme, while the funds will be channeled through the state’s micro-finance institutions.

About one per cent interest rate will be charged on the loan to take care of administrative expenses.

•Governor signs N662.588b Appropriation Bill into law
•’No plan to introduce new taxes’

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said the 2016 budget is his administration’s pact with Lagosians as it is in line with delivering on his promises.

The governor spoke yesterday when he signed the N662.588 billion Appropriation Bill into law.

Ambode promised that the budget would be judiciously implemented – in line with his administration’s determination to make Lagos work for all.

The Appropriation Bill, presented to the House of Assembly on December 17, was unanimously passed into law by the House on December 31.

Speaking at the ceremony at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Ikeja, the governor said: “This budget  will enable our government focus on the present challenges of security, traffic gridlock resolution, physical and social infrastructural development, which have thrown up new challenges quite different from our past experience.”

He thanked the House for the speedy passage of the bill, considering the long hours spent and meticulous scrutiny provided by the Committee on Appropriation.

Ambode said the budget would be driven by Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

He, however, appealed to tax payers to promptly pay their taxes.

The governor assured that his administration would deliver value for every kobo spent.

“In conclusion, I will commend this budget to all Lagosians and enjoin them to continue collaborating with us in building the Lagos of our dreams,” the governor said.

Giving a breakdown of “The Peoples Budget”, Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget Akinyemi Ashade said it would go a long way to promote massive investments in security, transport/traffic management, physical and social infrastructural development, in addition to enhancing job creation/opportunities.

He said the budget ,with an estimated total revenue of N542.873billion and the balance of N119.714 billion, is expected to be funded through a combination of internal and external loans, including the World Bank DPO 3 loan, which could not be accessed last year.

The State Internal Revenue Service is expected to generate N300billion or 78 per cent of the total IGR.

The commissioner added that while the government does not intend to introduce new taxes, efforts will be made to bring more citizens into the tax regime.

Giving a breakdown of the expenditure plan, Ashade said N89billion will be spent on construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of roads and public buildings; and N48.9billion will be expended on various transportation initiatives, including the completion of the Blue Rail Line and expansion of BRT Corridors (Mile 12-Ojota).

The commissioner added that N86billion will be spent on education, which, according to him, will cover the government’s flagship programmes, including A-Meal-a-Day initiative to be partly sponsored by the Federal Government, Ibile tablets for secondary schools as well as the development of the e-curriculum initiative.

Ambode: Lagos will grow despite bleak outlook

Lagosians were assured yesterday by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode that the state will grow in leaps and bounds despite  the bleak economic outlook.

“Despite the bleak economic outlook predicted in many quarters for this year, Lagos State will grow in leaps and bounds.

“We are determined and, God willing, we shall achieve all-inclusive progress and prosperity,” he said.

Ambode spoke at the 2016 annual thanksgiving service organised by the state government at the Lagos House in Alausa.

The annual thanksgiving, usually held on the first Sunday of January, was initiated by the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration. It was held throughout administration of his successor Babatunde Fashola.

Like in previous instances, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, presided and delivered the sermon.

Top clerics, including Bishop Mike Okonkwo, His Eminence, the Most Rev. Chukwuemaka Kalu Uche; Pastor Wole Oladiyun, Pastor Wale Adefarasin, Archbishop Adewale Martins, the Most Rev. E.A Ademowo, among others, also prayed for the state.

Some former governors, including Second Republic Governor Alhaji Lateef Jakande, attended the service. So did top government officials including Deputy Governor Idiat Adebule.

Bible passages were read by Ambode’s wife, Bolanle; Head of Service Mrs. Olabowale Ademola; Chief Judge Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade; Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Lola. Akande, and Chairman of the Conference of Executive Secretaries of Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas, Mr. Alabi Kolade David.

Ambode said: “Our youths will become gainfully employed. Our young girls and women will be protected and encouraged to give their best.

“Our entrepreneurs will experience a boom and our state will work for everyone. We are determined and, God willing, we shall achieve all-inclusive progress and prosperity.”

Giving the essence of the thanksgiving service, Ambode said: “We are gathered this evening in thanksgiving to the Almighty for the grace to witness the beginning of 2016. This annual thanksgiving has become a tradition where we come together to sing the praise of God for the continuous peace and prosperity of our dear state.

“This service is an acknowledgment of the overriding power of God in the affairs of men and the need for us to trust in His grace and benevolence as a government and a people.”

He went on: “The fact that we are gathered here is enough proof that we are covered under the banner of the Lord’s grace and that He surely answers prayers when He is called upon. It is with this abiding faith that we call on Him as we commence another journey in 2016.”

The governor acknowledged the religious and spiritual leaders in the state for their ceaseless prayers and intercessions for the people and government.

He specially appreciated Pastor Adeboye and his wife for their commitment to the service of the Lord through persistent exhortations and prayers.

Pastor Adeboye said despite the predictions for 2016 in the wake of the dwindling oil prices likely to result in loss of jobs, those connected to God can surmount the challenges.

He said those who seek to prosper in the New Year must take a stand to be closer to God.

  • Ambode and the sanctity of promise

The chief executive of CPA Australia , Alex Malley, once observed that what is needed from strategic leaders with an accounting qualification is a confidence that their ability and relevance is nearly impossible to compete with, not only in business, but in politics as well. It is Malley’s conviction that accountants could make a big impact in providing creative and purposeful political leadership. Yet, seldom do accountants step out to be the public voice, to seize the mantle of ultimate decision making responsibility, all of which perpetuates the common misconception that accountants merely balance the books.

Presently, in Lagos State, a chartered accountant, Akinwumi Ambode, has stepped out into the public space to accede to Malley’s clarion call for accountants to move over into the political sphere. Six months after his assumption in office as the Governor of the State, a lot has happened to authenticate Malley’s perspective that accountants have much to offer in the political arena. Various leaders make lasting impression on their admirers through diverse means. Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Martin Luther King etch themselves in the minds of their followers through their oratory prowess. Other leaders earn public respect through the strength and depth of their principles and convictions.

In his first six months in office, one item that has become quite steady in Ambode’s governing style is his penchant for keeping his word. In this clime, good number of political leaders makes promises they cannot keep. During electioneering season, the typical Nigerian politician would make a thousand and one pledges to the electorates. Upon assumption of office, the story changes dramatically. Several years of vague and empty promises have, thus, made Nigerians not to actually expect much from their leaders.

It is, however, in keeping faith with his electoral promises that Ambode has become quite different from most contemporary Nigerian politicians. To Ambode, a leader’s word should remain his bound. In his inaugural speech, he pledged his total commitment to run a government that will leave no one behind; a government that will implement programmes that make life simpler, easier and happier for the people. In fulfillment of that promise, the governor has ensured even allocation of infrastructure development in the State. Till date, in a bid to ensure effective human and vehicular movement, the Ambode administration has rehabilitated over 240 roads across the State. It is, however, imperative to emphasize that the exercise covers and favours every Division, Senatorial district as well as Local Government Council Area in the State. This is essential because it underscores Ambode’s pledge to run an all inclusive government.

In the area of youth empowerment, Ambode promised to create a favourable atmosphere for the empowerment of the youth. Presently, his administration has put in place a fund which youths with creative ideas and talents could access to make possible the realisation of their dreams. Similarly, in fulfillment of his promise to make Lagos a sure and first destination of choice for investors in Africa, Ambode made the establishment of the Office of Overseas Affairs and Investment, famously known as Lagos Global, one of his earliest tasks. The Office, which was set up by the governor on his inauguration day, is to help achieve the vision of Lagos State as Africa’s Model Megacity and Global Economic and Financial Hub that is safe, secure, functional and productive.

Ambode is equally making good his promise of ensuring prompt payment of the salary of public servants in the State. Since he assumed office, workers in the state’s public service receive their salary by the 23rd of every month. To the civil servants, it is a welcome development. But to the governor, it is a way of fulfilling one his campaign promises of creating a conducive atmosphere for workers in the employment of the State government to thrive in the discharge of their statutory responsibilities. In our climes, there is, indeed, no better way to motivate workers than ensuring their wages are paid as at when due since it makes them avoid distractions that emanate from financial worries. Ambode’s gesture, which is the basic practice in most multinational firms, originates from his firm belief that the workers are the ones that determine the pace of development in the State and as such must not be denied their wages which is, indeed, one of their core entitlements.

It is, however, not only serving public servants that are benefitting from Ambode’s promise of improving workers’ welfare, the retired ones are also not being left out. For instance, in order to reduce the economic and emotional burdens of State pensioners, the sum of N11bn has been released to pay off pension liabilities owed the mainstream retirees and the retirees in Local Government Areas since 2010. The development is part of Ambode’s promise to find a holistic solution to the issue of payment of pension entitlements to retirees under the pay-as-you-go pension scheme which was discontinued in April 2007, as well as outstanding accrued pension rights due to retirees under the contributory pension scheme.  Without a doubt, this intervention will go a long way in ameliorating the sufferings of retirees in the state.

Aside keeping faith with his electoral pledges, since he assumed office, Ambode has in the course of his public outings made several promises that he has demonstrated unflinching commitment to fulfilling.  The first few weeks of his administration saw the governor embarked on a tour of several areas of the state. Some of the areas he toured include Ipaja, Mosan-Okunola, Oshodi- Isolo, Ikotun-Ejigbo and Somolu areas. Significantly, the Ejigbo-Ikotun road which used to be nightmarish for motorists is currently under rehabilitation as the governor, during his visit on July 14, announced that work will commence on the road within seven days. Few days after, rehabilitation work began in earnest on the road.

One other very clear instance is the two petrol tanker fire accidents that occurred at Iyana-Ipaja and Idimu within the governor’s first one month in office. While sympathizing with victims of the occurrence, Ambode publicly made a pledge to assist them with some amount of money in order to mitigate their losses. To some of the victims, this might just be another empty promise. But, being a man of his word, soccour came the way of the victims two weeks after the governor made the pledge to assist them.

Similarly, in the story of Mrs. Ruth Uche and her twins, who were abandoned by her husband, Mr. Benjamin Uche, after giving birth to another set of twins, Ambode carried out his promise of providing respite to the hurting woman and her children. In furtherance of his electoral promise of reaching out to every member of the society irrespective of religion, ethnic and social divides, Ambode fulfilled his promise of rehabilitating Mrs. Uche. Mrs. Uche and her triple twins were not only hosted by the State government, they were equally provided with financial assistance that would help her to start a business. She was equally helped by the state government to get a decent accommodation.

In contrast to Napoleon Bonaparte, who once said that “the best way to keep one’s word is not to give it”, in his first six months in office, Ambode has not only given his word, but he has kept same. Without a doubt, Lagos is in safe hands!

Eschew violence, Lagos gov’s wife, commissioner, others urge youths

Wife of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has urged youths to eschew violence and become agents of change in the society.

Mrs Ambode gave the advice at the maiden youth interactive session organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development with the theme, ”Peace in the World:The Role of Lagos State Youth.”

The event was held on Tuesday at the Onikan Youth Centre, Lagos.

Ambode’s wife, who was represented by the wife of the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Mrs Seye Oladejo said:” One important role which the youths can play in peace and conflict resolution is for them to be the change. They can do this by changing their attitude towards people, traditions, religion and beliefs. They should learn to combine their enthusiasm with patience, realizing the importance of living together and should be responsible to defend the frontiers of peace and non-violence.__

T___he Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Princess Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf  called for the support of stakeholders towards effective platform for the development of youths in the state.

Akinbile-Yussuf said: “Sustainable development, peace and security are inextricably linked and young people are essential to the establishment of lasting security. Youths stand a chance of being used as elements for violence, hooliganism and conflict making as we have seen such cases in countries where terrorism is the order of the day. _But the vast majority of them_ can lead as champions of peace; they are only vulnerable to violence because they don’t have the right education.

Popular actor and a member of the Lagos House of Assembly, Hon. Desmond Olusola Elliot, urged youths not to embrace despondency but deploy their energy towards meaningful endeavours.

Vice_ President of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS),Chief Yomi Otubela also urged youths to shun violence saying: ”The National Youth Council of Nigeria(NYCN) and youths to see themselves as serving humanity other than avenue for material acquisition. Youths must be agent of peace and not violence, hence, Lagos youths must redefine their objectives. They must redefine their character and conduct in the society and must be peace ambassadors in the society.

The interactive session was witnessed by entertainers including popular actress Doris Simon, music group, Artquake; Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs Lola Akande, her Wealth Creation counterpart, Mr Tunde Durosinmi-Etti, Ojora of Lagos, Oba Fatai Aremu Aromire among others.

  • 2016 holds great promise for Lagosians, says Ambode

2016 holds great promise for Lagosians, says Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday assured residents that his administration will go all out to ensure that the state witness a quantum leap in the areas of infrastructural development, job creation and improved security.

The Governor, who gave the assurance in his first New Year broadcast to Lagosians, said he was optimistic that 2016 will be a ground breaking year for the good people of the state.

He said:“The last seven months have been challenging, but with your patience, support and positive criticism, we have begun to display a positive outlook on innovation and inclusion we promised during our campaign”.

“Lagos has always been a cosmopolitan potpourri of vibrant people that have driven the greatest growing economy in Africa. We however need the continued support of our citizens through regular payment of their taxes and strict adherence to their civic responsibilities.

“Under my administration, the year 2016 holds great promise for all Lagosians through improved security, creation of job opportunities and greater attention to positive infrastructure development”, he said.

He thanked the people for their support and love that his administration has received so far, just as he assured that it would spur him to redouble his efforts to deliver a more prosperous Lagos for all, despite the national economic downturn.

“I am aware that 2016 will also bring economic challenges due to pressures of dwindling revenue from the centre, but Lagos has always been resilient and must consolidate on its self-reliance to ensure it survives any inclement economic weather”, he said.

Meanwhile, Governor Ambode has assured that his administration will pursue greater channels to engage the youths in the State in 2016, just as he urged Lagosians to work with him to make Lagos clean, safe and secured for all.

The Governor, who spoke at the Bar Beach while addressing thousands of fun seekers at the grand finale of the One Lagos Fiesta, a countdown event to usher in the New Year, said the N25billion Employment Trust Fund, an initiative of his administration, would take off this year, expressing optimism that it would help the youths to set up their businesses.

“Our pledge is to make Lagos clean, safe and secured. We will witness a remarkable boost this year. We commit to work as hard as possible to create more jobs for our youths. The Employment Trust Fund is designed to help our youths to set up their businesses and it will commence this year”.

“Our massive investment in education, health, entertainment, sport and tourism to effectively develop and engage our youths will start in this year 2016”.

“We will pursue greater channels to better engage our youths just as we have developed many programs toward the welfare and better involvement of our senior citizens,” Governor Ambode said.

He said: “With your support, we have demonstrated that good governance is what you will get. We promised to take government back to you the people; we pledged to bring government back to the community; in the last seven months, we have earnestly pursued this goal. Nothing better demonstrate this commitment than the One Lagos Fiesta, the grand finale of which we are all witnessing now.”

“For the very first time in the history of Lagos State, Lagosians can now celebrate the crossover night and the New Year day wherever they live in the State. Whether you are in Victoria Island, Ikorodu, Epe, in Agege or Badagry, you now have the opportunity to celebrate the countdown in your localities simultaneously.”

“We encourage you all to work with your government; please bring your ideas to us, we want to hear from you. This is your government and we as your servants always want to know your views about our performance.”

“This is an open government. As we all commence the New Year, we pray for greater successes and good health. We pray for abundant resources individually and collectively and for God to protect Lagos and all Lagosians. Let us make Lagos great,” Governor Ambode said.

  • Ambode and Lagos’ roads to prosperity

It is no longer news that Lagos is the fastest growing mega city in the world. It is currently expanding at about five percent a year and is projected to achieve meta-city status by the year 2020. A recent study reveals that over 25,000 people, from across the world, move into Lagos on a daily basis. This is what makes Lagos a melting pot. The presence of people from diverse walks of life is partly responsible for the prosperity of Lagos. It is ironic however, that this has also brought a huge pressure on the state as its sheer human population puts serious pressure on its infrastructure and resources.

Without a doubt, Lagos roads suffer significantly as a result of the city’s recent phenomenal growth in population. The sheer number of vehicles, of various categories, that ply Lagos roads on a daily basis is second to none in the whole of Africa. The pressure that that these vehicles daily exert on roads across the state makes them easily susceptible to wearing out before long. This is why successive governments in the state spend quite a fortune on roads rehabilitation and maintenance.

It is, however, not only the sheer size of Lagos that affects its infrastructure, the topography equally poses a major challenge to sustainable infrastructure in the state, especially roads. Many road projects are subject of massive soil replacements after series of seismological tests that has enormous cost implications for the projects. Other challenges of road maintenance in the state includes the lack of ownership of infrastructure that is, vandalization of road furniture and public utilities by indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roads and drainages, activities of roadside mechanics and carwash operators and axle overload on inner-city roads.

In our society, there is arguably no achievement that boosts good assessment of a government than construction and rehabilitation of roads. It is in the light of this reality that the Ambode administration has, in the last six months embarked on massive road rehabilitation and maintenance across the state. For the administration, which actually came on board in the thick of the rainy season, road rehabilitation is a necessity. In Lagos, the rainy season often has serious implications for human and vehicular movement.  Since significant portions of the roads have been largely damaged by the rains, the Ambode administration came up with “Operation fix all potholes”, which is geared towards ridding all roads of potholes to enhance a hitch free vehicular movement. By defying the prolonged rainy season in its road rehabilitation’s quest, the administration has disregarded a universally held belief that road maintenance work is seldom done during the rains.

Through this process, over 300 roads have been improved across the state. These include Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Mongoro-Cement-Dopemu under bridge axis, Ijaye road, Moses Adedayo Street, Ojodu, Oba Akran Avenue, Ogba, Charity/Olayiwola/Olaniyi road network, Abule Egba, Ipakodo-Ijede road, Isaro road, Ikorodu, Ikotun-Ijegun road, Okekoto axis, Agege, Epe-Ijebu -Ode road, Odumola-Poka/College road junction axis, Ado road, Ajah, Obalende bridge descent inward NIPOST,  Lekki-Epe expressway, Elemoro-Abijo axis,   Billings way, Oregun,  Ashabi Cole street, Alausa, Abdul Ouadri Adebiyi street, Magodo Ph II among others. This is aside major rehabilitation works that had been done on the recently commissioned Ejigbo-Ikotun road, Moshalasi-Ayobo road, ACME road among others.

Meanwhile, it is imperative to emphasize that the exercise covers and favours every division, senatorial district as well as Local Government Council Areas in the state. This is in furtherance of the vision of Governor Ambode to operate an all-inclusive government. Ambode’s idea of an all inclusive government is one in which “no one or segment of the society, irrespective of colour, race, faith, status, ability or disability is left behind”. It is, however, important to stress that the palliative works being carried out on some strategic roads across the state are not meant to provide permanent solution but temporary relief for Lagos residents pending the setting in of dry season, when real asphalt works will be applied to the depressed surface. Considering the level of work done so far on the roads, in addition to several on-going commitments such as the newly commissioned Mile 12-Ikorodu BRT lane and busses, it is expected that significant improvement will soon begin to take place in road transportation across the state.

Of late, the rate at which roads are being rehabilitated in the state has been impressive.  Expectedly, this has attracted widespread commendations from far and near and has convinced the citizenry that with Ambode, Lagos is, indeed, in safe hands. One positive impact of on-going road repair across the state is employment generation. For instance, it has been estimated that over 815 jobs for both skilled and unskilled labour have been generated by the on-going road rehabilitation exercise in the state. In the same vein, some of these road projects have also increased the capacity of Lagos residents to create wealth. For instance, it has been observed that, among others, business enterprise and other socio-economic activities have significantly picked along the newly commissioned Ikotun-Egbe road as well as the new improved Ayobo-Ipaja road. This is against the backdrop of the massive infrastructural renewal that has taken along the axis.

A major driving force of the Ambode administration is poverty eradication and sustainable economic growth through infrastructure renewal and development. To sustain current gains, the state government has continued to maintain and actively create an enabling environment for both the people and corporate entities to thrive. This is why the infrastructure development programme being promoted by the administration is very vital. Benefits, strategic to the state economy, which the government will get from on-going road projects, for instance, include a strategic response that addresses the infrastructure gap occasioned by the 34-year surge in population; government’s plan for tourism; open access to the 250 million strong market on the West African sub-region; potential to create job, and improvement in property value.

Despite the relative success that have been achieved thus far in the area of road construction and rehabilitation in the state, government is not resting on its oars. New projects are being envisaged as captured in the 2016 budget. Therefore, considering the level of work done so far on our roads, in addition to several on-going commitments, it is expected that significant improvement will take place in road transportation across the state in the New Year. The implication of this is that the New Year would usher in greater prosperity for Lagos residents because it is a well acknowledged reality that improved infrastructure invariably improves the quality of life of the people.

Ambode frees artisan from Air Force cadets’ car trunk

BUT for the intervention of Lagos State Govenor Akinwunmi Ambode, an artisan, Dahiru Lawal, would have paid dearly for breaking the car windscreen of an Air Force cadet.

The governor got him out of the trunk of the Chrysler Stratus car marked KRD 267DV where he was kept for the breaking the windscreen.

Cadets Peters Solomon and his colleague, Abdullahi Fahad, who claimed to be attached to the Air Force Base in Ikeja, Lagos had forced Lawal into the car trunk at Mile 12, after dragging him on the ground.

Ambode, who was returning from Agbowa, swiftly intervened, wondering what Lawal did to warrant such treatment.

The cadets told reporters that they put Lawal in the car trunk for trying to escape after breaking the windscreen.

Lawal, they claimed, ran into the nearby market where they chased and caught him.

Solomon said: “What happened is that the boy broke the windscreen in front of my car. When I stopped, I asked him to come, the boy ran away. We have to drag him back and put him in the boot.

“I kind of threatened his boss that he is working with and when his boss came and looked at what he did to me, that was when I put him inside the boot. Not that I locked the boot, I only put him inside the boot, but I did not lock the boot.”

Fahad said he and Peters were along Mile 12 after visiting a friend when they heard a knack on their windscreen and they saw Lawal attempting to escape.

“We now ran inside the market and dragged him (Lawal) down. I was even asking who he is working with because I want to see his Oga since I know he cannot repair my damaged windscreen. I want to see the man he is working with so that we can settle everything with him. I now told my colleague that we should hand him over to Air Force police at the Air Force Base,” Fahad said.

Reliving his ordeal, Lawal who hails from Kaduna State, said he mistakenly broke the windscreen with the load he carried, adding that he took to his heels because he was afraid of what the Air Force men might do to him.

He said: “I ran into the market and they pursued me and caught me inside the market. They started beating me and dragged me to their car.

“The pleas of my boss and people around fell on their deaf ears. The police also came to plead with them to open the boot but they insisted on taking me away and it was at that point that the convoy of the governor arrived to rescue me from the boot of the car where they kept me,” Lawal said.

The artisan said he lost his cell phone and N5, 000 cash, which he had on him while being dragged on the floor.

The governor has ordered that the suspects be handed over to the police.

    •Launches ‘One Lagos Fiesta’

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has reiterated his commitment to run an all-inclusive and participatory government.

Governor Ambode spoke at the launch of the ‘One Lagos Fiesta’ at the Agege Stadium, Agege.

He said the programme was in fulfilment of his campaign promise.

The ‘One Lagos Fiesta’, tailored towards ushering in the New Year, will hold between December 27 and January 1, simultaneously in five locations-Epe, Badagry, Ikorodu, Agege and Lagos Island.

Ambode said: “The last time I came to this stadium was during the campaign and I came with President Muhammadu Buhari. The President has been so magnanimous, he has sent us the minister of Information and Culture to come back here and say a big thank you to you.

“We promised you that we are going to bring governance to the communities; we promised you that we are going to have a government of inclusion where you will be included in everything that we will be doing in Lagos State.

“That is why we are here to say that One Lagos Fiesta is about  you and it is about the rest of Lagos. We want every youth and every parent to enjoy what others have been enjoying.

“That is why we have decided to have a five-day programme that will be done in Badagry, Agege, Epe, Ikorodu and Lagos Island. This is the first place I’m visiting and that means you mean a lot to me.”

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, hailed Lagos State for the innovative annual countdown event, describing it as the biggest in sub-Saharan Africa.

Mohammed congratulated the government for re-jigging the event into what is now known as the ‘One Lagos Fiesta,’ designed to hold simultaneously in five locations across the state.

“This will ensure that all the state’s five administrative divisions have a taste of the crossover celebrations. In addition to bringing the annual event closer to the people by staging it in Agege, Badagry, Epe, Ikorodu and the Bar Beach, the ‘One Lagos Fiesta’ will also showcase the multi-cultural endowment and arts of the various communities in the five administrative divisions,” the minister said.

2016: Ambode hopeful despite gloomy predictions

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has expressed confidence that in spite of the gloomy economic predictions, the state will record progress in 2016.

He spoke at the Christmas Eve Dance organised by Island Club, Lagos, on Thursday night, saying the implementation of the N662. 58 billion budget for 2016 would engender progress.
