    Masari: It’s a national tragedy

    Former Katsina State governor, Aminu Bello Masari, has described Buhari’s death as a national tragedy and a moment for reflection, adding that the ex-president had served Nigeria with  dedication.

    Masari, who spoke to The Nation in Katsina shortly after the news of the death of the President broke, , said: ‘’Buhari was a gentle and just leader who, despite his roots in Katsina, governed with the entire nation in mind.’

    “He came from Katsina, but he served the nation. From his early days as a military officer, to Head of State, and finally as a democratically elected President, Buhari’s entire career was committed to Nigeria.

    ‘’I can say this without hesitation, Buhari never favoured Katsina over any other state. He was fair, firm, and deeply principled. He belonged to the whole country, not just one part of it,”

    The former governor also described Buhari’s death as a monumental loss for Katsina and Nigeria. ‘‘

    Recalling his legacy of integrity, discipline, and nation-first leadership, M,asari added: “President Buhari represented a rare breed of leaders, humble, just, and selfless. Nigeria has lost a true patriot.

    An erstwhile Katsina State  Governor and now Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), Rt Hon. Aminu Bello Masari, has restated the agency’s commitment to  more interventions to improve the tertiary education sector.

    Masari spoke on the  sidelines of the ThisDay Newspaper Award ceremony held in Lagos on Monday night.

    Masari, who was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award, noted that the agency would not let the country in the discharge of its responsibilities.

    “As the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, I am giving the assurance that the Fund will do more in its various intervention programmes. I thank President Bola Tinubu for the support given us and I also appreciate the management and workers of the Fund for living up to their responsibilities.

    “Despite the global economic challenges we are also confronted with as a nation and an agency, with the prudent management of the resources we have, and also applying them to critical areas necessary, we are surely going to achieve more and get great results,” he said.

    While acknowledging the fact that the scope of coverage of the Fund’s activities keeps increasing with more public tertiary institutions,  the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, expressed  confidence that adhering to rules and regulations on the part of all concerned would still yield great results.

    He said the policy is that if for instance a state has more than one university, special projects due to the state would be alternated among the universities.

    Speaking on the award and the owner of This Day Newspaper,  Prince Nduka Obaigbena, he praised the resilience of Prince Obaigbena.

    “I am honoured to be here. Nduka was my neighbour in Apo Village during the 1994 Constitutional Conference and he told me he wanted to set up a paper and I was among the first set of people to patronise them,” he said.

    Obaigbena also confirmed that he gave the first copies to the paper to Masari, the late General Shehu Musa Yar Adua and the late Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu at the Constitutional Conference.

  • Katsina bandits to end attacks for members’ release

    FOURTEEN groups of bandits in Faskari and Kankara Local Government Areas of Katsina State on Thursday offered to swap the victims in their custody in exchange for their members arrested by security operatives during attacks.

    A leader of one of the gangs, identified simply as Alhaji Mansuni, spoke on behalf of the others.

    Mansuni spoke with Governor Aminu Bello Masari on Thursday on the second day of their dialogue meeting at Angwa Tsamia Primary School, Birni Gogo in Faskari Local Government Area.

    The repentant bandit leader said the groups were pleased with the governor’s moves to ensure peaceful coexistence among residents of the state and others.

    He urged the government to free fellow bandits and their kinsmen who were in the custody of security operatives.

    Mansuni promised to release about 1,000 victims in the custody of the armed gangs and ensure other groups comply.

    The repentant bandit also told the governor that the fear of insecurity, deprivation, indiscriminate arrests and alleged killing of herdsmen by security agents led them to engage in banditry attacks.

    He said: “We are happy by your coming to visit us right in our hideouts. We Fulani have challenges which the government should look into. These include construction of roads, education facilities, provision of infrastructure and good living conditions.

    “Again, indiscriminate arrests by security agencies and extortion by members of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) as well the attitude of the Hausa in rural communities, who refused to coexist with the Fulani, requires that we all sit down and iron out our differences.”

    The Chief Imam of the Fulani, Alhaji Liman Majuna, assured Msari that the bandits were really willing to surrender their arms and embrace government’s amnesty.

    He said: “We have forgiven and forgotten what happened five years ago. We will confront whoever that does not want peace.”

    Governor Masari told the bandits, who turned out en masse, that it was better for them to abandon the bush and killing of their brothers and embrace peace and amnesty.

    He said: “If you gather all the cattle, get all the money in this world and shed innocent blood, there is no benefit in them.

    “You can never defeat government. If you kill 10 soldiers, government will bring 100 more and bring thousands of guns. We will look into your requests, build roads and schools and ensure better quality of lives.”

     

  • Bandits offer to swap victims with arrested members

    A day after they alleged that security operatives were fueling kidnapping in exchange for monetary gains, some bandits in Katsina State on Thursday offered to swap kidnapped victims with their arrested members.

    Fourteen different groups of bandits, operating in Faskari and Kankara local government areas of the state, promised to release the kidnapped victims in exchange for their members who were arrested by security operatives’ in some parts of the council.

    They made the offer to Governor Aminu Bello Masari on the second day of their dialogue with the governor and other critical stakeholders at Angwa Tsamia Primary School, Birni Gogo, Faskari Local Government Area.

    The leader of one of the gangs, Alhaji Mansuni, who spoke for others, said the bandits were pleased with the governor’s presence and his drive to ensure peaceful coexistence in the state and in the country.

    He pledged the bandits’ readiness to reciprocate Masari’s gesture of freeing their kinsmen and fellow bandits from the custody of the security operatives by releasing about 1,000 victims in his custody.

    Mansuni, who promised to prevail on other groups to release their captives, also told the governor that the fear of insecurity, deprivations, and indiscriminate arrest and killings of herdsmen by the security agencies led them to armed banditry.

    “Again, indiscriminate arrest by security agencies and extortion by members of SARS, as well the attitude of the Hausa in the rural communities who refused to coexist with the Fulani, requires we all sit down and iron out our differences.”

  • Masari to bandits in Katsina: enough is enough

    KATSINA State Governor Aminu Bello Masari on Thursday engaged representatives of bandits terrorizing the state’s eight frontline local government areas to find a permanent solution to the incessant attacks and kidnappings that has gripped the state for some time now.

    The meeting, which was held at the state secretariat, was also attended by heads of security agencies; the deputy governor, Alhaji Manir Yakubu; traditional rulers and districts heads, led by the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumin Kabir Usman.

    Others include Secretary to the State Government Alhaji Mustapha Inuwa, Transition Committee Chairmen of the affected frontline local government areas, representatives of Miyyeti Allah and the Fulani herdsmen

    The Nation gathered the attendance of the representatives of the bandits was made possible by the amnesty declared for them by the Northwest governors at a recent meeting.

    Masari, who spoke in Hausa, warned that the insecurity rocking the affected local government areas was becoming embarrassing to both the state government and President Muhammadu Buhari, who is also an indigene, warning: “Enough is enough”.

    He restated the commitment of his government to deploy whatever means in dealing decisively and ruthlessly with banditry and kidnapping.

    The meeting, according to the governor, is expected to be of great impact towards restoring peace to the affected local councils and the entire 34 local government areas.

    He added that the security of lives and properties of the Katsina residents lies in the hands of government, security personnel and everyone.

    He said: “We are ready to dialogue with the bandits and are ready to go anywhere they invited us, because we are not afraid to meet anybody to end this problem.

    “As a leader, I must find the solution to the problem so that if today I died, I know how to defend myself before God. I will not allow this to continue; enough is enough’’

    “I have directed the security operatives to take all necessary measures to change the narrative on insecurity in the state, by any means necessary.’’

    The Emir of Katsina observed that the fight against banditry and kidnapping, though challenging, required collective efforts.

    He appealed to the house Assembly to ensure speedy passage of the signed mandatory death sentences for cattle-rustling and kidnapping bill into law.

     

  • CAN to Buhari: reshuffle security architecture now

    THE local chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kano State has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to tinker with nation’s security architecture.

    Its chairman Rev Samuel Adeyemo, said it was high time the President reviewed the structure in the face of the numerous security challenges in the land.

    He spoke on a day the President renewed his vow to fight insecurity and other attendant challenges to a standstill.

    The CAN chairman urged the President to as a matter of urgency, review the country’s security structure.

    Adeyemo gave the advice in a remark at the “Pastors Solemn Assembly for the Peace and Security of the Church” in Kano held at the Believers Fellowship Baptist Church.

    Adeyemo cited insurgents’ attacks in the Northeast as well as the wave of banditry, kidnapping and armed robbery on the highways in other parts of the country as basis for the appeal and the prayers.

    The CAN chair specifically observed that God has been merciful to the city of Kano by shielding it from the growing wave of insecurity.

    The cleric said: “The wave of kidnapping, herdsmen killings, armed robbery attacks on our highways and the insecurity in nation prompted us to call for these prayers. The Muslims and Christians must rise up and pray.

    “Secondly, let the security apparatus of the nation, that is the Federal Government needs to reshuffle the security apparatus; let them review it because we have the expertise; we have the materials to restore the nation’s security.”

    He noted that coming together of all the pastors in the state for a solemn prayer on security was an acknowledgement of the protection of God and a prayer for the sustenance of the peace.

    The cleric, however, appreciated the efforts of Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and the various security agencies for their roles, urging them to rededicate their efforts.

    Speaking in Batsari, Katsina State, President Buhari assured that perpetrators of banditry and kidnapping attacks would be brought to justice.

    He was on a sympathy visit to 1,050 Internally Displaced persons (IDP), selected from the affected eight frontline local government areas bordering the Ruga Forest in the state, said those kidnapping, maiming lives and calling God are not true faithful because “it is either they don’t know God or disagree with Him.”

    He said: “What brought me here is to condole you over the recent bandit’s attacks affecting not only you but all of us. I have nothing to add on what the Emir had already spoken extensively about, but all what leaders should do right from home is ensure justice.

    “I assure you that we sleep and wake-up with the sad moment of banditry and kidnapping activities in the state and country. By the Grace of God we will use soldiers, police and other public servants to end banditry.

    “All those whose activities are to kill people and saying ‘Allahu Akbar!’ are lying, because God is not wicked. You can’t carry bomb or gun, sword or knife to go and kill innocent somebody and say ‘Allahu Akbar!’. This implies that you either don’t believe in God or you don’t know what you are saying.

    “There is popular Hausa adage says ‘it’s the rat in the house that tells the rat outside that there is fish in the house’, so within yourselves, your neighbors and even your relatives there are informants.

    “So in this case, both you and I don’t know them, it’s only God that knows them, we can’t do anything here rather intensity prayers for God’s intervention by exposing them.”

    He urged the people to remain patient with the government and to assuring that with their collaboration with the top to bottom authorities comprising ward, village and district heads, Emirs and the governors, normalcy will be restored in the shortest possible time

    The headquarters of Basari Local Government Area is regarded as the hotbed of banditry and kidnapping attacks amongst the eight front line local government areas of Katsina State.

    In his opening remarks, Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari said the amnesty and offer of dialogue granted by the Northwest governors with improved security collaboration, has helped in scaling down attacks in the state

    He acknowledged that the large expanse of RUGA forest offered the bandits an unfettered opportunity to unleash attacks on hapless citizens and assist them in changing locations easily whenever they are repelled by security forces.

    Emir of Katsina Abdulmumin Usman warned against reprisal attacks, and called for efficient information dissemination between the people, traditional rulers and the government on security matters.

  • Masari: Banditry attacks will soon be history in Katsina

    Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has declared that the current banditry attacks and insecurity in the state will soon become history, thanks to the concerted efforts of security agencies, the state government and other relevant stakeholders in addressing the scourge.

    The governor, who made the declaration at the Government House shortly after a -5-hour security meeting with heads of security agencies in the state, including the two first-class traditional rulers of Daura and Katsina and the Secretary to the State Government, said there are growing indications that the security situation in the state has greatly improved, particularly in the eight frontline local government areas.

    He said, “We have reviewed the situation and so far are satisfied with the progress made. We have not gotten there yet, but definitely we will be there. That is why we have taken over five hours discussing what has happened and planning how to go forward with the approaches to make sure that normalcy has completely been restored, particularly in the eight frontline local governments in Katsina State.”

    On the issue of providing additional security for the farmers, the governor said his priority is to restore normalcy first and then other concerns particularly security for the farmers will follow.

    He said, “I think there are so many issues, but first of all let us restore normalcy. The next step is to find out why it happened and how it happened…”

    “You cannot run away from economic issues that have affected the people negatively for a long time and I think we are restructuring the restoration agenda which we have started by constructing schools and clinic along the area and the next step is restoring needed infrastructure in the area.”

    On the issue of dialoguing with the bandits, the governor proffers a holistic approach where other bordering states in the northwest would be involved.

    He said, “What is going on in Zamfara affects Katsina State. Right now in Zamfara, we have what we call dialogue with the bandits, which we did  long ago in Katsina, but we realised that for it to be successful, it has to be done collectively alongside with the issue of amnesty in the entire northwest.”

    Masari called for a united and common approach on the issue of dialogue and amnesty with the bandits to ensure peace in the region.

     

  • Masari to corps members: work for development

    Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari on Thursday urged newly sworn in National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members deployed in the state to contribute their quota to the development of the state.

    He advised them to participate in community development service projects (CDSP) and augment the state’s manpower needs in the Education and Health sectors.

    The governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Hajia Halima Othman, spoke during the swearing in of this year’s Batch “B” Stream I corps members.

    He also urged them to live up to ensure the progress and development of the state and the nation in general.

    Masari said: “It is my firm belief that the orientation programme will strongly equip you for this great task. The programme should stimulate and facilitate your analysis of the wholesome aspirations and socio-economic demands of a greater country.

    “In the course of this orientation, you will be introduced to various issues bordering on good governance, national security, culture, tradition and some paramilitary exercise. They are designed to adequately prepare your body and mind for effective participation in the ongoing effort towards accelerating national development.”

    The governor promised to provide the corps members an atmosphere that will be conducive for their camping as well as ensure adequate materials and financial support for a successful camping and service.

    According to him, Katsina State has always remained home away from home to all visitors.

    The State NYSC Coordinator Ahidjo Yahaya said the orientation course, besides proving mental and physical training, would prepare the corps members for their national service.

  • Masari prays for victims of banditry, kidnapping in Katsina

    Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari yesterday prayed for the repose of the souls of victims of banditry in Batsari and other frontline local government areas.

    Masari led the prayer after he and his deputy, Manir Yakubu, were  sworn in at about 11.15a.m. for their second term in office by the Chief Judge, Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar.

    The event took place at the newly constructed “People’s Square” in front of the Government House in Katsina.

    The event, which was low keyed as a mark of respect for slain victims of banditry in Batsari and other frontline local government areas, also had in attendance the Emirs of Katsina, Abdulmuminu Kabir Usman and the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk Umar, as well as the heads of scurrility agencies and federal parastatals.

    Masari, while describing the security siege in the state as unacceptable, called for immediate action by concerned security agencies and prayers for the victims.

    He said: “Let me seize this opportunity to once again express my heartfelt condolences to victims of the recent terrorist attacks at Batsari and Kankara Local Government Areas, where over 39 people lost their lives with more than 200 injured.

    “This is an unacceptable tragedy for which I call for a special prayer here and now in memory and respect of our fallen citizens of Batsari, Kankara, Safana, Jibia, Dandume, Sabuwa, Faskari and Danmusa Local Government Areas.”

    Masari assured the citizens of the state that his second term tagged ‘’Restoration agenda 2’’,will be carried out with utmost  sincerity, fear of God and judicious utilisation of all available resources, human and material, to restore Katsina State to its lost glory .

  • Masari inaugurates 28 member committee for May 29

    The Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari on Saturday inaugurated a 28 member committee headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Mustapha Inuwa and charged with the task of ensuring a smooth transition to his administration’s second term in office

    Mustapha Inuwa while inaugurating the committee on behalf of the Governor, said members were drawn from divergent professional backgrounds and experiences to ensure timely and quality delivery of their terms of reference

    He said “The committee members were drawn mostly from party elders and individuals who played active role during the 2019 campaigns and the subsequent re-election of the Governor. The Director of Security is the secretary to the committee ’’

    “The members were given terms of references and were expected to establish six subcommittees broken down into publicity, venue logistics, protocol, entertainment and so on. The Committee is expected to submit its report on Tuesday May 14’’

    On the non-inclusion of members of the opposition into the committee in fulfillment of Governor Masari’s speech of running an inclusive government, Alhaji Inuwa said the opposition was deliberately left out because they were in court challenging the election.

    He said “Had it been they were not in court contesting our victory at the polls, we would have simply invited them to join the government and nominated their candidates for appointments’’

    “But they chose the other way rather than congratulating us .so we wait till after the court, then we see what happens’’

    The Nation recalled that the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, which came a distant second in the March 9 governorship election, had petitioned the electoral outcome at the State Election Petition Tribunal which began sitting on Monday May 6

    As the countdown to the inauguration of Governor Masari for a second term in office draws nearer, anxiety are mounting particularly on whether the current political office holders will be retained, or dissolved
