Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has urged newlyweds to build marriages rooted in love, unity, and shared purposes, stressing that strong families are vital to national development.

He made the call in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Saturday at the wedding of Israel Aduragbemi Lawal and Oluwatobiloba Chidinma Achudume, daughter of the Lead Pastor of Victory Life Bible Church International, Apostle Lawrence Achudume.

Governor Abiodun, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, and the Chief of Staff, Dr. Oluwatoyin Taiwo, commended the families of the couple, and expressed optimism that their union would flourish.

He urged them to embrace the counsel offered during the ceremony to build a lasting home.

The colourful event drew prominent political and religious figures from across the country. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was represented by his wife, Mrs. Bola Obasanjo; former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Dr. Udom Emmanuel, also attended, as did former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, who sent a representative. Others included Ambassador Folake Marcus-Bello; Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs Hon. Adijat Adeleye, and a representative of the Plateau State Governor, Hon. Caleb.

In his sermon, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun, Presiding Bishop of Victory International, Ibadan, Oyo State, charged couples to make joint prayer the anchor of their marriage.

“When two hearts pray together, they align with each other and with God. This builds a home that can withstand life’s storms and contribute to nation building,” he said.

He encouraged couples to cultivate habits of doing things together—eating, sleeping, playing, serving God, communicating, and raising their children—warning that many homes suffer when partners begin to live in silos.

Apostle Achudume, father of the bride, expressed joy and confidence in his daughter’s readiness for marriage.

“I have watched her grow in the faith, and I am convinced that the foundation laid in Christ will guide her as a wife and mother,” he said.

Speaking about his new son-in-law, he added, “Before Israel came, God had already confirmed it to us. He is jovial and free-spirited—just like me.”

The groom, Israel Lawal, recounted their journey from friendship to marriage.

“I didn’t see this coming, but today she is my wife. She is intelligent, accommodating, beautiful, and spiritual—a true Proverbs 31 woman. I am blessed,” he said.

A host of distinguished clergy graced the ceremony, including Bishops Oludaisi Adekunle, Reuben Oke, Tom Samson, Felix Adejumo, Olubunmi Banwo, and Rt. Rev. Dr. F. I. Omobude, who was represented by his wife.

    Amosun, Utomi clash over policies

    • He’s like Zhongfu, says ex-governor

A former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun is at loggerheads with development economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, over the ex-governor’s alleged contract violation.

Amosun was Ogun State governor between 2011 and 2019.

Utomi accused Amosun of violating a contract he entered with his government.

The popular economist was reacting to the former governor’s admission that he cancelled a deal with a Chinese firm, Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Company Limited.

Amosun said the firm allegedly presented false documents, describing its officials as “impostors”.

A court in France later ruled in favour of the company and ordered the seizure of three Nigerian presidential jets.

In a tweet yesterday on his X handle, Utomi claimed that, like the Chinese company, he also faced a similar ordeal under Amosun’s administration.

“So, it was Governor Amosun’s violation of contract terms signed by his predecessor that brought the shame of seizure of jets from the Presidential fleet. I hope he is happy at his achievement. The whole matter is karma at work.

“The Chinese were not the only victims. One prominent Ogun indigene allegedly committed suicide with a similar Amosun action. I too was a victim. I had leased OPIC land in Lagos in a BOT agreement under (former) Governor (Gbenga) Daniel. Amosun stopped all such on being sworn in. I called him.

“He said he did not see my name on the list. I went to Abeokuta and he called in Yewande Amusan who said mine was a straightforward deal they did not include it. He asked that all be included but mine be quickly sorted. That began a rigmarole that went on for years.

“I made another trip to Abeokuta. He drove me back to Lagos at the wheels with my driver trailing along with the escorts and sirens.

“He had earlier asked that I make a request for a refund of what I paid even though my South African partners and I had invested (N)200 million in addition to the lease amount at the time. With just two of us in the car, he advised I make a claim for (N)100 million and write for additional payments the day after I cash the cheque. It was surreal, but if I got nothing more, it would be better than being in court until we both retire. I took the case to APC leader, BAT (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) and Baba (Bisi) Akande. No result; I took it to Dapo Abiodun when he took over. Nothing came of it.

“If this happened to Frieda, I wondered what enemies were going through. I lost my weary SA partners who owned a successful regional chain across Southern Africa and Asia. I licked my wounds and slaved to pay off the loans. The Chinese had better leverage. They took it and all are shamed.”

Reacting to Utomi’s statement last night, Amosun said: “Before I came into office, the Ogun State House of Assembly had passed a persona non grata on Utomi and put its resolution in the state’s black book.

“So, I was curious when I became governor and called Utomi to ask what the issue was. This was entirely at my discretion and not because he reached out to me. But I reckoned that as one with some degree of name-recognition, that should not be, and I wanted to know what happened.

“He, however, told me, amongst other things, that there was an ongoing construction in an Ogun State property that had become controversial.

“I immediately raised a team for verification and to know what to do. The team I sent said the land was inappropriate because the said construction was being done in the car park of the Ogun property on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Road (Way) in Lagos State. My team then suggested somewhere else.

“But he didn’t want another place because, according to him, the place in question gave more visibility. After our in-house assessment, my team concluded he could not have spent more than N35 million or at most N50 million on the construction, as of then. At that point, I decided to visit myself.

“In addition, it was discovered that the so-called work done was hurriedly executed in the wake of the realisation that another political party had won the governorship election and would take over the reins of leadership in the state.

“It was also obvious that what was being attempted was a move at ambushing the state government under my watch and presenting us with a Fait Accompli, a situation that would have generated a controversy about demolition of an on-going project.

“Just so that his investment in the state would not go to waste, I committed to making a refund of N100 million as against his claim of N200 million. He pressured me ceaselessly to pay him N200 million, but I did not yield.

“As part of his determination to sway me, he deployed his Centre for Value in Leadership (CVL), through the instrumentality of an award. At first, it all looked curious that I’d just been in office for about two years and here I was being given an award. So, I rejected it.

“But he insisted that I honour his CVL Solution Conference Series with my presence, which I did, and I was given a plague for participating. But I did not change my position on the refund of N100 million as against his N200 million claim.

“A few years later, he complained to some people with the sole intent to malign me. When I heard, I called to tell him off because his problem was purely one of entitlement mentality. He even boasted, asking me: ‘Do you know who I am?’ Imagine! But I ignored him because I immediately saw through his true colour. In my book, it’s one law for everyone, no matter who you are.

“I challenge everyone, including journalists, to let us meet at the construction site and see the N200 million investment he claimed to have made there. Let them also ask what benefit the project would have been to Ogun State…”

    Severance gratuity: Amosun’s ex-aides seek Tinubu’s intervention

former aides to  former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun have called on President Bola Tinubu to persuade Governor Dapo Abiodun to pay their severance gratuity denied them since 2019.

They lamented that despite the humongous amount accruing to the state, and the president’s charge that governors cushion the economic hardship through payments of outstanding debts to their people, Governor Abiodun was yet to fulfil his pledge to offset the severance allowance.

But the special Adviser totheGovernor on media and strategy, Kayode Akinrinade, faulted the aides and accused them of playing to the gallery.

He said that Amosun paid all his political appointees their severance allowances before leaving office but left out his assistants.

The special assistants served between 2015 and 2019. Their representatives – Fakorede Adesanya, Okoya Babatunde and Musiliu Oladeinde – said Governor Abiodun met them ahead of the 2023 elections and promised to pay the severance allowance.

A statement by the former officials reads: “This is an acknowledgement that we are entitled to and deserve the allowance. The governor has denied us the legitimate entitlement for five years. This has caused us psychological trauma. In the course of time, the value of the gratuity has depreciated considerably. Many of our colleagues who resigned their jobs to serve Ogun State could not return to the jobs. Many of them and their families are in financial straits, hence our appeal for President Tinubu’s intervention.”

    • He was exceptional administrator – Ondo govt

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, his Ondo State counterpart, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, former Governor Ibikunle Amosun and other eminent personalities paid last respect to late Major General Ekundayo Opaleye as his remains were laid to rest on Friday in Abeokuta, the state capital.

General Opaleye passed away in November 2023 as a result of a heart attack. He was at the helm of affairs in Ondo state between 1986 and 1987 as military governor.

Abiodun, Aiyedatiwa, and Amosun separately eulogized the late Opaleye as an exemplary soldier, leader, and administrators who served his Nigeria, Ondo, and Ogun states with dedication.

Aiyedatiwa, who was represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, described the deceased as an exceptional administrator and exemplary leader whose contributions to the development of old Ondo State can never be forgotten.

Aiyedatiwa, also said that the late military administrator of Ondo State was a dutiful soldier who served the country meritoriously.

He said:, “Listening attentively to the tributes given by all the various groups here present, I cannot but conclude that Major General Opaleye was a total man who excelled in all spheres of life. He was a responsible and committed father, highly revered elder statesman, and an illustrious son of Ogun state.”

“In Ondo state, we know him as a very thorough and articulate administrator who has left an indelible mark on the sands of time. I recall he was the one who introduced the ‘due process’ in the operations of government in the then old Ondo state – a feat that will be remembered by generations yet unborn,” the Governor said.

He further described the late General as a steadfast Christian who demonstrated his faith in God at all times and a complete gentleman soldier who had high regard for the Yoruba tradition and the entire black race.

“As testified by one of his close friends here, General Opaleye was, no doubt, a devout Christian who until he took his last breath, still proclaimed Jesus Christ as his Lord and personal saviour. He also held the traditional institution in high esteem during his tenure as military administrator of Ondo state.

“Though his demise is painful we are consoled by the fact that he lived a life of purpose. On behalf of the government and people of Ondo state, I wish to commiserate with the Ogun state government for this irreplaceable loss, not only to the state but the country at large.”

Present at the event were dignitaries from all walks of life including the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was represented by his deputy, former governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, serving and retired military personnel.

  • Amosun, Oshiomhole exchange salvos over APC tussle

Amosun, Oshiomhole exchange salvos over APC tussle

Former National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Adams Oshiomhole and ex-Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday exchanged salvos over the circumstances that led to Oshiomhole’s removal from the top party office in 2020.

Amosun, a two-term governor of the Gateway State, said the two-term Edo State governor was the architect of his own misfortune.

He said Oshiomhole was fond making reckless allegations against people.

Amosun was reacting to Oshiomhole’s comments at the presentation of a book on Tuesday in Abuja that APC governors, including him, plotted his removal as party chairman.

The book  was written by former APC National Vice Chairman (Northwest) Salihu Lukman.

The book presentation was well attended by top party leaders, including National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, former governors, ex-party leaders and former public officials.

Oshimhole explained that the governors constituted themselves as Generals, who the party should defer to, during the moment of critical decision making.

He accused Amosun of disloyalty, saying that he abandoned his leader, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, in the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and defected to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

Oshiomhole also accused the former Ogun governor of saying that he would have left the APC if Buhari had not deterred him.

Following the protracted conflicts between Oshiomhole and the governors, three of them-Amosu, Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo) and Rochas Okorocha (Imo) were suspended from the ruling party.

Later, the heat was turned on Oshiomhole,  who was unceremoniously during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party in June, 2020 to pave the way for a national caretaker committee headed by Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State.

Rejecting Oshiomhole’s allegations, Amosun said Oshiomhole was responsible for his exit as chairman.

Amosun, in a statement titled: “Amuse Yourself, Not the Public,” accused the former chairman of conducting “one of the worst primaries in the history of Nigeria’s contemporary politics and ended up shopping his enemies, leading to his eventual removal as Chairman of our party.”

He reminded the former labour leader of his invitation by the Department of State Services  “to clarify certain grave allegations.”

Amosun advised Oshiohmole to soberly take stock of his past to serve as a guide for him in his future public utterances rather than dragging the names of innocent people into a needless controversy.

The statement reads: “It’s been a struggle since yesterday (Tuesday)  on what to make of the ‘tales by moonlight’ that Senator Adams Oshiomhole treated the audience of Dr Salihu Lukman to at his book launch, “APC and Transition Politics”, in Abuja.

“This apparent struggle was not for lack of a proportional response to his deliberate drivel, but because not only was his story fraught with lies but also because he did not boast the requisite integrity to say the truth.

“Besides, it is not in my character to join issues with people I consider qualified enough to be referred to as both leaders of our party, the APC, and of this great country, Nigeria, to which I believe Senator Oshiomhole belongs.

“However, given his antecedents and penchant for careless and, most times, baseless and unverified public statements, and also considering my duty to the country and the public in particular, it will be uncharitable if I fail to put the records straight.

“What Senator Oshiomhole was alleged to have said, apart from being far from the truth, is a calculated attempt to present water while drinking wine.

The Yoruba adage says, “If you let a madman bury his mom the way it pleases him, he could roast her for a meal.” At that point, the community is to blame for his choice.

“Indeed, listening to him yesterday, his utterances represent some inherent inadequacy, which he vented not just at inauspicious times but without basis and predicated only on lies to hoodwink the unsuspecting.

“It is not in doubt that I have participated fully in the formation and sustenance of our party, the APC, and I can boldly say that the party under

“Nigerians should not be in a hurry to forget the allegations that preceded the conduct of those primaries and his eventual invitation by the Department of State Service, DSS, to clarify certain grave allegations.

“If anyone was in doubt that Senator Oshiomhole posed the biggest and most destructive threat to the existence of the APC at that time, and the party’s best bet was to dispose of the canon folder that he was and unfortunately still is, his utterances and grandstanding yesterday at an occasion to find solutions to our democratic and party challenges would have cleared such a mindset.

“If he wanted to insult our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, he could have come out boldly to do so. But his subtle attempt to pass snide remarks at him failed the simple test of loyalty because the former president also his party to merge with other like-minded people to form the APC.

“Also, if he is seeking favour from the presidency, why not come out and do so? But to tell barefaced lies like, “You are working for your paymaster in Lagos, your paymaster in Bourdillon,” is cheap but typical of an individual who suddenly found himself where he never dreamt of, despite his obvious limitations—education and exposure.

“If the public will remember, soon after Senator Oshiomhole was sworn in as a Senator, he allegedly said members of the 9th Senate had vandalised their offices before leaving, only for him to eat the humble pie and made to apologise later when it was obvious that the allegations were baseless.

“My honest advice to him is to carefully and soberly sit down to take stock of his past so that it will continue to serve as a guide for him in his future public utterances rather than dragging the names of innocent people into a needless controversy because in Africa, age and leadership are associated with wisdom.

“This is also why I have consistently brushed aside and intentionally scoffed at his tongue-in-cheek apology, which he had extended to me several times. I am now convinced it was not genuine. In the final analysis, background matters.”

    Amosun is down, says Oshiomhole

Oshiomhole yesterday reacted to Amosun’s statement.

The former labour leader said the former governor is a pathological liar.

He recalled that Amosun supported a governorship candidate on the platform of an opposition party when he was Ogun APC leader.

However, he denied disrespecting former President Buhari, saying that he supported him as party chairman.

In a statement in Abuja, Oshiomhole who took exception to Amosun’s remark that he found himself in too public positions, saying: “I don’t think I need to comment on that because you can’t fight with pigs in the mud water.”

The statement reads: “The first thing is that I did not in any way say anything that was meant or that can be interpreted to mean an attack on the person of (former) President Muhammadu Buhari. Not at all. On the contrary, he is one of those who made it possible for me to be National chairman of APC.

“He contributed a lot for me to be chairman, so I have no reason to say anything against him.

“For over a period of a year, they were planning the removal but they were not able to get it and not once or twice did the President (Buhari) warn them that those who want to take any decision, that was the way he put it, who want to remove anybody, they should follow the constitution.

“The President said so on record and net. So I have no grievance whatsoever for my removal. However, the problem is, people like Amosun  who believed personal relationship keeps boasting. People like Amosun were the ones who dropped  the name of the president as cover for them not to follow the party’s constitution and there is no secret about it.

“Number one, that he defied the rules of the party and floated another party and encouraged his loyalist to contest governorship election on another party platform called the APM.

“We queried him and subsequently we suspended him as a member of the party. Again, this is not a secret.

“Why he hypocritically sponsored people on APM’s platform is because he knew he didn’t have the political weight and he contested his own Senatorial election on APC’s platform. So, what is not true about this?

“Number two, that he contested governorship on the ANPP platform and lost. On the primary election we conducted in Ogun State, he went to the Federal High Court and the court of appeal and his objection was dismissed because it is on record that he disobeyed the rules of the party. He did not participate in a lawful primary and therefore he had no Locus Standi to question what happened in those primaries.

“He relied heavily on his closeness to power to disobey the rules of the party and God gave me the courage and we suspended him.

“He also knew he told me that but for the president, he will not conduct primary. He said had no right to ask to supervise his primary.

“He did not behave like Senator Tejuoso also from Ogun State who contested for senatorial election like Amosun and lost but he did not leave the ANPP to join us in ACN like Amosun and it is on record.

“He also lobbied Tinubu to give him ACN’s ticket. By then I was a governor. So I was part of this process and we supported him financially and logistically for him to win the election. So I was also his pay master.

“We keep records including any other presidential election. But the whole story is both that because he had an ambition which like other ambitions died in his womb,  to contest for presidential election which form he obtained. This is not a secret.

“I am grateful to ex-President Buhari because he stood by me, it is just that at the point when he was about to work, he allowed the governors, not all the governors, to have their way.  Majority of the governors were on my side.

“The result was that those of them who were against me, who were holding meetings, plotting and calculating tried to use the judiciary.

“If they had the power, they didn’t need to use the court. They should have used the democratic means. That is ridiculous. But the fact is that I have no bitterness whatsoever, but we must record history.

“We need to document history and not  allow people to get away from certain behaviour. It is important that whatever we do is recorded for or against us.

“That was the only thing I mentioned. It makes no difference. In any case, if they claim that my people didn’t like me, I have since won a senatorial election.

“Well, I don’t think I need to comment on that because you can’t fight with pigs in the mud water.

“Whatever he says, today I am a sitting Senator. I led the entire workforce of Nigeria as NLC President. So he has nothing about his credentials, powers or position that he can compare himself to me.

“So, he is entitled to his opinion. But I didn’t get any of those positions through godfatherism. I fought my way to where I am.

“So,  I think the conclusion is don’t forget how he vowed that I would not leave the stadium alive when we went to campaign there.

“He arranged boys who went to the rally who were throwing stones and sticks at us. It was also on national television, it was covered live.

“They were throwing water and stones at us at the podium and they nearly stoned the President who had to jump to prevent one of the missiles from hitting the president.

“Again, this was on national television. And like I told him the day he called me with the president from the villa, he is just a pathological liar. And I’m happy that he has or I hope that he has learnt his lesson. All these things I have said, I can say them on oath.”

    Amosun’s loyalists join Abiodun’s camp

Some loyalists of former Governor Ibikunle Amosun from the 20 local government areas of Ogun State have joined the Governor Dapo Abiodun camp of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abiodun received the returnees led by the factional Chairman of the Amosun-led party executive, Chief Derin Adebiyi, at the Presidential Lodge, Abeokuta, on Friday.

Commending the returnees, the governor said: “I want to congratulate your sense of loyalty to the leadership which I will say is not only commendable. It is enviable,” he said.

“This is a culture that we must promote and entrench. It is a culture that is fast eroding; it is a culture that we are fast losing. Loyalty is 100 per cent.

“For some others, they move once things are not working well, but for you, you stay put. This sense of loyalty is worthy of emulation. We must appreciate the fact that there can only be one leader in a party at a time.

“Even when we have ambitions and desires, we must subordinate ourselves 100% to leadership and believe that it is in that subordination that will allow us to flourish and achieve our objectives, our dreams, our desires, and aspirations, not by forming factions or by breaking away.

“Because by so doing, it only weakens the fabric of that collective union that we call our party. You must appreciate that there can be only one leader of the party at a time in the state, and that leader is the governor.

“As the leader of the party, I appreciate the task bestowed on me and it is my duty to work towards individual and collective welfare of our members,” the governor noted.

He urged all members to put the past behind them and work towards repositioning the party to achieve its aims and work for the socio-economic development of the state.

“Let us the past behind us. Let us promote what unites us as a family. I welcome you back. The future of Ogun State is in your hands and it is for us for the taking. The same joy the father of the prodigal son received his lost son back home, the same way I receive you today,” he said.

“To those who did not leave, please let us receive our brothers and sisters back. To those who are joining us, please let us display a sense of loyalty. I can assure you, that you will be fully integrated.”

In his remarks, the Chairman of the state chapter of APC, Yemi Sanusi said no human relationship is completely free from disagreement.

He however noted that there is room for peaceful resolution of conflict, and urged the returnees to fully integrate themselves with other party members.

Responding, Adebiyi said the return of members of his faction was informed by the need to contribute to the development of the party and the state in general.

  • Amosun’s curious armoury

The information that seeped into the public domain that the former Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, had an arms and ammunition depot in the government house, needs further investigation by the security agencies. Without doubt, the effort by the former governor to pass off the hand-over of the arms and ammunition on the eve of his departure to the state commissioner of police as an official function of state, does not seem to add up.

The discrepancy in the number of guns and ammunition the governor claimed he handed over, from what he actually handed over according to the commissioner of police, leaves a gaping hole, which the security agencies need to investigate.

Furthermore, the claim that the arms and ammunition were bought and are owned by the Ogun State government heightens the incongruity in the whole story. An out-going governor should have handed over the private assets of the state to the in-coming administration, and not to the commissioner of police, as claimed by Amosun in his story.

Even more intriguing is the claim by the commissioner of police that the arms were handed over in 2012, and that he did not see any arms during the so-called disarming process. The gaps and incongruities in the information released by the concerned parties make the story a nervy one for a nation roiling in armed conflicts, some of which were orchestrated by disgruntled politicians. There are a few examples to buttress this state of affairs.

For instance, it is common knowledge that the crisis which engulfed Borno State and later metamorphosed as Boko Haram started with a state-sponsored militia. It is alleged the former state governor of the state, Ali Modu Sheriff, used state resources to buy arms and ammunition and created a private militia, supposedly in the interest of the state he governed. Also, in the Niger Delta, there is the report that some politicians support some of the militias to attack their opponents, for political reasons. In many other instances, politicians arm thugs who fight for their personal interests, during elections.

So, if eyebrows are raised about the propriety of former Governor Amosun using state resources to buy arms and ammunition, keeping them in his custody and storing them in the government house, such worries are well founded. We recognize that many states have invested hugely in equipping the police in their states, and they have to take steps to protect those assets from being deployed to other states, since the police are controlled by the Federal Government. But that will not entitle the governor to become an armoury keeper, without the needed checks and balances to avoid abuse.

It is also important to find out from the former governor where he kept the missing ammunition, which runs into thousands. According to media report, while Amosun claimed he handed over 4,000,000 ammunition, the state commissioner of police said only “1,400,000 and some fractions” were handed over to him. So where is the rest of the ammunition? Again, Amosun needs to explain why he chose to hand over state assets to the commissioner of police instead of his successor, or were those guns and ammunition private assets of the governor, which he could deal with as he pleased?

We ask, could the last outing of the supporters of Amosun during the visit of the president to campaign in Ogun State, be a pointer to their potential to breed trouble in the state? We recall that the president and his party men were  heckled allegedly by Amosun’s goons. So, a thorough investigation is necessary to get to the bottom of this curious armoury.
