    ‘I’ve good relationship with Amosun’

    The senator representing Lagos West, Solomon Adeola, yesterday said although he and Governor Ibikunle Amosun might have differences as politician, ‘’our relationship is cordial”.

    Adeola who called Amosun “my governor” and “our governor,” added that as far as moving Ogun State forward and taking it to a greater height are concerned, they both are “on the same page”.

    The senator spoke on a programme on RockCity FM, monitored by The Nation.

    Adeola, who hails from Ogun West, an area yet to produce a governor since the state’s creation 40 years ago, said he had not formally informed the governor of his ambition.

    He hailed President Muhammadu Buhari, the military and other security agencies for the conquest of Sambisa forest, saying the capture showed Buhari was committed to his word.

    Amosun pays severance allowances to ex-public officials

    Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday presented severance allowance cheques to political office holders, who served in the administration of former Governor Gbenga Daniel between 2007 and 2011 as well as those in his first term (2011-2015).

    Addressing beneficiaries at the Arcade Ground, Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the governor said: “It does not matter which political party or administration you have served; what matters is that you have served the state diligently.”

    He said to accommodate all ex-appointees, including those at the council level, his administration added N2.4 billion to the N10.6 billion from its share of the Paris Club loan refund.

    The government has used the fund to pay arrears of gratuities from November 2012 to February 2014, six months cooperative deductions and severance allowance of political office holders between 2007 and 2015.

    In all, the government paid N13 billion as opposed to the N10.6 billion it received.

    The governor said the N13 billion would directly benefit the economy and positively affect  traders and taxi drivers.

    Amosun assured the people he will leave the state better than he met it.

    He said 2017 would witness more development, including the proposed light rail project.

  • Amosun lauds NYSC scheme

    Governor Ibikunle Amosun has hailed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme as a “veritable means of harnessing the productive energies” of the nation’s youth as “development agents.”

    He said many Nigerians who passed through the scheme are today occupying commanding positions in the political, social and economic sphere of the society nay the country.

    Amosun, who made this known at the International Stadium, Sagamu, Ogun State, during the closing ceremony of the 2016 Batch ‘B’ stream 1 orientation programme, urged all hands to be on the deck for the sustenance of the lofty scheme.

    Amosun, who was represented at the occasion by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Afolabi Afuape, urged the corps members to see the one year assignment as a challenge and contribute their quota to the socio-economic development of Ogun State and Nigeria.

    He recalled that the NYSC programme was specifically designed to bring Nigerian youths together with the “objective of instilling in them, dedication, perseverance, patriotism and national consciousness needed for the growth of the country.”

    A total of 2,642 Corps members concluded their three week course at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Sagamu, which involved two drills, lectures to appreciate national values and productivity as well as security tips and martial arts for self defence, according the state Coordinator, Mr Afoloyan James.

  • Christmas:Amosun calls for love

    OGUN State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has called on Christians and indeed all Nigerians to embrace peace and love in all their dealings.

    The governor stated this, yesterday, in a Christmas message by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Adejuwon Soyinka.

    “As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, it is time for us as a nation to reflect on the need to love our neighbours as ourselves and live a life of selfless service to our communities and nation as a whole,” Governor Amosun said.

  • Amosun and Ogun workers

    Wednesday, December 21 was another red letter day in Ogun State. In one iconic gesture, the Ibikunle Amosun-led administration devoted a whopping sum of N12.5 billion to clear the arrears of gratuities and cooperative deductions of the workforce. A fragment of the amount goes to offset the severance package of the political office holders under the Otunba Gbenga Daniel-led administration and last dispensation. This is aside the payment of December 2016 salaries and bonus to the workers.

    This is big news for many reasons. Nigeria is in economic recession, exacerbated by the unprecedented plunge in the price of crude oil in the international market. We all know the crisis going on across the states of Nigeria in terms of salaries. While Ogun is not immune to the realities of the recession, the state government has never defaulted in the payment of monthly salaries to its workforce.

    Not many compatriots actually know that the Amosun government began payment of gratuities to retired workers from 2008. That is three clear years before he was elected in 2011. Some N24 billion was expended on this, including inherited deductions.

    I recall the argument then. “Mr Governor, please concentrate on your own tenure. You were not the one that owed those workers. That amount is enough to settle all gratuities during your own term!” But Amosun demurred, “These people are Ogun indigenes. They have served the state meritoriously. Yes, I did not owe them. But they have to be paid. They deserve to be paid!”

    No one, in its wildest imagination, had dreamt of the current recession. But the Amosun government was proactive. It introduced immediately Single Treasury Account and e-payment. This shot up the revenue of the state geometrically. In the Ministry of Commerce alone, the income generated suddenly rose from the average of N45 million per annum under the previous government to N550 million per  annum (representing 1,122% increase) within a space of one year  – all simply by blocking the loopholes in the old system and introducing a cashless policy! That percentage increase in one ministry alone is staggering! The new government considerably reduced the salaries of political office holders in addition to being among the few states having the lowest number of such office holders.

    Thus the Internally Generated Revenue of Ogun State rose from N750 million monthly under the former administration to N5 billion within a short space of time.

    The World Bank Doing Business Report of 2014, which rated Ogun among the five states that made the biggest strides in terms of ease of doing business in Nigeria, is enough testimony to the economic transformation brought about by the current administration. Today, Ogun has become the industrial hub of Nigeria due to the enabling environment provided for business by the Amosun government. Over 110 multi-billion naira companies have berthed in Ogun in the last five years. The latest is the Palms Shopping Malls, whose first plaza in Ogun State (Shoprite), the biggest in the country.

    Therefore, if Ogun has been able to stay afloat during the current financial difficulties in Nigeria, and has enjoyed industrial harmony, let the reader understand the road it had marched economically in the last five years. Ogun is also affected by the current storms but never overwhelmed!

    All the 36 states of the federation must appreciate the government of President Muhammadu Buhari for its magnanimity, transparency and commitment to due process. Unlike the previous practice, where money was paid to only PDP states, all the 36 states of the federation are benefiting from funds released by the Federal Government to cushion the effects of the current recession. And one must immediately add that things began to fall apart economically in Nigeria since 2013. Everything was blamed on oil theft by the then government. Nigerians now know the truth – how billions of naira meant for development were squandered. Had they been well invested, such investments would have stood the country in good stead during the current drastic fall in global oil prices. As I once observed, we sowed the wind under the previous governments and we are now reaping the whirlwind.

    As the Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Barr Taiwo Adeoluwa, opined at a press conference on Wednesday, the Amosun government will continue to abide by the Memorandum of Understanding it signed with the labour unions. It has even now surpassed the expectations of the MoU.

    Another point that may not been known to the public is that the current government, in 2011, increased the salaries of workers. The rise almost doubled the wage bill of the state. And not just the state workers but local council’s as well. The argument of the governor has remained the same: “ Ogun workers are the best in the country, and there must be a commensurate reward for that.” Hence, Ogun, despite being number 25 out of 36 states in terms of the size of income from the Federation Account, pays the highest salaries to workers! This did not start today. It did not start yesterday, but since 2011. One is, therefore, shocked to the marrow that the present gesture to workers could be denigrated by some opposition elements in order to score a political point. But they are adept at hitting below the belt and scoring an offside goal. And we know the result of an offside goal – it comes to nought! While these detractors join the “Internet millipedes” to corrupt the public space with their half-truths and outright lies, Amosun is busy at his desk thinking and deploying strategies to further develop the state. As Ambassador Chris Cooter, Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria observed in April 2013, “The governor has been emphasizing that his administration is very particular about hard work. Here we are on a Sunday, I look at the construction going on, definitely, I am impressed. It is going to transform the state, no doubt. Whether it is canal, the road network, health or education, clearly, I can see a demonstration of the ‘can do’ attitude…”

    And while these “cold and timid souls” are asleep, snoring, Amosun is awake reading the feedback from the masses, who constantly send him messages about their views – and he reads them all and acts accordingly. Little wonder the bond that exists between him and the people.

    In the immortal words of Theodore Roosevelt in April, 1910, “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly… who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

    Militants now regrouping in Ogun, says Amosun

    Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday raised the alarm that militants are returning to the state.
    Amosun said the militants were not only “regrouping” in boundary communities within the state but also approaching Ijebu-Ode and Ogere – both in Ogun East Senatorial District.
    The governor spoke when the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 81 Division, Maj-Gen Babtunde Oyefolu, visited his Oke-Mosan office in Abeokuta, the state capital.
    He noted that before the militants were routed, following military’s air and land assaults on their dens in riverine parts of the state, they had sacked various communities, destroyed properties and displaced people.
    Amosun hailed the military for its efforts at degrading Boko Haram in the Northeast.
    “Everybody would agree that we are winning the war, people are returning home, areas that were under the control of Boko Haram are now free and people are going back home. So, huge commendation for the military.
    “When we bring it home here, not too long ago, we had these issues with these criminals. I don’t call them militants, they are just criminals, who took over all our riverine areas, we ran to Mr President and they were sent away.
    “What we are hearing is that they are now regrouping, they have moved from where they were sent away from, they are now moving very close to Ijebu Ode towards Ogere.
    “Before now, they were in Arepo, Sagamu, Ikorodu but what they are now doing is regrouping and taking hostages around boundary areas.
    “It is a very good avenue for me to inform you but we would be ready for them and it is good that I am putting you on notice,” Amosun said.
    General Oyefolu lauded the government for supporting the Army, adding that security should be the business of everyone.
    He appealed to the governor to extend his empowerment programmes to officers in the state.

  • Let’s conserve our forests, Amosun pleads

    Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has said that there is need for collaboration between the public and private sectors in reviving the depleted forest reserves across the state. He therefore called for public-private participation (PPP) to enable the state to achieve the purpose.

    The governor made the appeal during the launch of tree planting project at Olokemeji in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State by Tree Restoration and Planting Company (TRECO).

    Represented by the Commissioner for Forestry, Chief Kolawole Lawal, he said the protection of the environment through planting of trees and taking care of existing ones should not be left to government alone, saying individuals and corporate organisations should join hands with government to achieve the set goal.

    “We all need to ensure a drastic reduction of the rate at which our forest resources are depleted through indiscriminate exploitation without a proper regeneration programme,” he said.

    The governor said despite high population growth which had resulted in an increase in demand for wood, among other forest products, required participation among stakeholders geared towards ensuring that policies that would help bridge the gap between forest products demand and supply.

    In her remarks, the Minister for Environment, Aminat Muhammed who was represented by the Federal Director of Forestry, Mr Philip Bankole said the rate of deforestation in Nigerian forest reserves was alarming, urging that all hands must be on deck to revive the forest reserves across the country.

    Amosun to revive Gateway Hotel

    Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday reiterated his commitment to revive Gateway Hotel in Ota.
    Amosun said this at the opening of the First Shoprite Plaza at the Toll-Gate in Ota.
    According to him, the resuscitation of the Gateway Hotel would complement the new Shoprite Plaza in bringing development to Sango-Ota, as well as the state.
    “l’m delighted that Ogun State has finally joined the states that have shopping malls, just like any other, in the world.
    “This development goes further to confirm our status as a mega-city, with things like this.
    “Congratulations to Shoprite, congratulations to the Palms, the Chairman of the mall and so many others that will come to do business here,’’ Amosun said.
    He appealed to the chairman of the mall, to build more Shoprite plazas at Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, Ilaro, Sagamu and other major towns.

    Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun,  has also congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his 74th birthday.

    In a statement he issued through his Senior Special Assistant (Media), Mr. Adejuwon Soyinka, the Ogun State Governor joined family, friends, political associates and well wishers to celebrate the president on the occasion of his birthday, yesterday.

    “On this occasion of your birthday, we celebrate you and your commitment to the socio-economic and political development of our dear nation, Nigeria,” the governor said.

    Amosun added that, “at 74, the president’s work ethics, commitment to the Nigerian nation and style of leadership is indeed a great lesson to the younger generation.”

    The governor prays that “Allah continues to grant the president good health, sound mind and fulfillment in his efforts to steer the ship of the Nigerian state in the right direction.”

    Buhari South-East Youths Movement (BUSEYM) is one of the groups that also congratulated Buhari on his birthday anniversary yesterday. In a birthday message to the Nigerian leader, titled “So Far, So Strong At 74,” signed by its Director-General and National Publicity Secretary, Engineer Nwabueze Onwuneme and Comrade Igwe Samuel Obinna, respectively, BUSEYM described the president as “an iconoclastic leader and role model whose philosophy and impact on Nigeria will continue to be studied for years to come.”

    The group urged Nigerians to “celebrate Buhari for his resiliency, consistency, and dogged determination to make the country a better place for all.

    “As you celebrate your 74 birthday today, rest assured that your place in the hall of fame is assured. Your lifestyle, quality of leadership, dedication to a better Nigeria and philosophical thrust mark you out as a leader who will always occupy a prime space in our minds,” the group said.

    The group, which thanked him “for giving the youths and women of the south-east zone a place and voice in the emerging new Nigeria,” called on Nigerians to pray for long life, good health and God’s continued guidance for President Buhari,” stressing that unless the people invest faith in their leader, their aspirations may never be realised.

  • Forgive Ambali, others, NUT boss begs Amosun

    NATIONAL Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Olukoya Alogba, yesterday, hailed Governor Ibikunle Amosun for recalling 12 of the 16 sacked teachers.

    He said it was a “Christmas gift” to them.

    Thirty five workers, mainly teachers, were sanctioned on October 31, after a panel indicted them for their alleged infractions of public service rules at the October 5 World Teachers’ Day in Abeokuta.

    Sixteen were dismissed and 19  suspended

    On Tuesday, 12 were recalled, with the suspension of the 19 lifted.

    Olukoya said Amosun’s decision did not only end weeks of “nightmare” for them but it was a relief to them and their families at this time of “economic hardship”.

    The NUT national chairman appealed to the governor to forgive the four dismissed colleagues.

    The sacked quartet are state Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Akeem Ambali; State NUT Chairman Dare Ilekoya; Branch Chairman Eniola Atiku and Nola Balogun.
