Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday suspended the Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government, Mr. Patrick Ogunde, the vice-chairman and councillors.

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, gave no reason for their suspension.

The government said it was in line with Sections 39 and 43 of the Ogun State Local Government Law, which approve the suspension of the Executive and Legislative arms of the councils for 90 days by the governor.

The government has constituted a Panel of Enquiry to look into issues that led to the suspension. It will submit its report within 14 days.

The panel members are Chief Wole Adesiji (Chairman), Mrs. Ayoola Afolabi, Mr. Bayo Adeyemi and Mr. James Omotosho of the Ministry of Justice (Secretary).

The Head of the Local Government Administration (HOLGA) has been directed to manage the council’s affairs.

  • Amosun presents N112.86b Budget

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday presented the proposed N211.86 billion Budget for next year to the House of Assembly.

The proposal, which represents a 5.6 per cent increase compared with the 2012 figure of N200.55 billion, was tagged: “Budget for sustainable growth’’.

Amosun said that the budget was geared towards the actualisation of his administration’s mission to rebuild the state.

A breakdown of the budget shows that the education sector has the lion share of N43.44 billion, representing 20.50 per cent of the budget.

This is closely followed by rural and infrastructure development/employment generation with N39.92 billion which represents 18.70 per cent.

The governor said affordable housing and urban renewal in the budget would gulp N29.62 billion, while N14.72 billion would be expended on efficient health care delivery, representing 6.95 per cent.

Agricultural production/industrialisation has a share of N10.69 billion representing 5.05 per cent while N73.48 billion goes to sundry matters.

Gov. Amosun: Sango-Ojodu road is waiting

SIR: The plan of Ogun state government to reconstruct the road from Sango under Bridge through Ijoko to Ojodu is no longer news. On this plan, the people along this long stretch of road who are daily suffering the pitiable conditions of the road are more than anxious to see the project start in earnest.

May I use this opportunity to call on Governor Ibikunle Amosun (Eyi o wu a wi, toluwa ti se) to ensure that nothing stops the full commencement of the road as soon as possible, because what we heard initially was that the project will start in November, now the month of November is already fading away without any sight or sound of action on the road.

The people along the route have wasted and still wasting productive man-hours, financial resources on vehicles maintenance, high cost of transportation being charged by drivers that ply the road as they have to break even in their business among others. The daily suffering and inconveniences of the road cannot be quantified.

Former Governor Segun Osoba will forever be remembered for opening up the road during his time, and thus brought development and people to the area, former Governor Gbenga Daniel will also be remembered for neglecting the road for the eight years he spent, and thus diminished the steady development of the area, so Governor Amosun should endeavour to have his name on record as the one that uplifted the road to a high standard for the benefit of all and mankind. Definitely, history has different chapters for all actors of life on which posterity will judge every individual and government.

Sango-Ojodu road is waiting, so, Gov. Amosun, roll out the Tractors now.

  • Amosun and the changing face of Rock City

Amosun and the changing face of Rock City

SIR: Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, has been a screaming metaphor of governmental failure since the return of civil rule in 1999. The state capital has been on the wrong side of the developmental chart ever since.

A good number of those who held sway as governor and public office-holders in the state during the locust era of the military, and under civil rule did not do more than pay lip service to the gnawing problem of development and the rot in the city. The result is that the city is languishing under the heavy yoke of bad roads and the twin problem of flood and erosion.

What would have passed as an average effort by the administration of Otunba Gbenga Daniel to address this sore in the heart of one of Nigeria’s foremost cities ended in a fiasco, as people who were said to have been mobilized for major contracts in the city simply took a walk after collecting full payment for the jobs.

Officials had always explained the failure of the government to address the plight of the city on the premise that Abeokuta is an ancient town whose plan is lacking in adequate implementation.

However, the story is changing. At the inception of his administration last May 2011, Governor Ibikunle Amosun promised the people of Ogun that his administration would give attention to the challenges of wresting Abeokuta from infrastructural decay, flooding and erosion identified as the loudest sources of misery to the inhabitants of the city.

He restated his resolve to ensure a holistic implementation of the Abeokuta masterplan, reputed to be one of the most badly mauled plans in the country. He was shocked that the residents of the city, who complained about the menace of flooding and erosion had constructed structures, kiosks and containers to block the natural drains constructed by the founders of the city. During one of the visits, the governor promised that all illegal structures blocking the drains would be pulled down.

Although few people believed the governor then, he has commenced a process in earnest to remove the shameful scar of rot from the city. He has also taken some practical steps to fulfill his promise to recreate the exploits of Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State in Ogun. He seems to be drawing his inspiration from transforming effect of creative governance in Lagos as shown by the conversion of Oshodi from a centre of filth and crime to a welcoming centre.

In the past 10 months, Abeokuta residents have witnessed the noticeable impacts of governmental presence.

For the first time in Abeokuta, several people who had exploited the weakness of previous administrations to encroach on the right of way including the commercial Bank in the city, got the message and decided to embark on the expected corrective step of vacating the area and relocated. Those illegal structures built without government approval were sealed off by the State special Task Force on Bureau of Urban and Physical Planning (BUPP) under the programmes “Build Right.”

Across the city, landlords of such structures deemed illegal by the government have taken the initiative to embark on the demolition themselves. Those who have certificate of occupancy got their compensation from the state government for the demolitions. Even as the exercise continues a good number of roads, especially the major ones and streets would be stripped off in due course for roads reconstructions and expansions.

With the first phase of demolition and the additional space added to the major roads like, Sokori/Ita-Eko/Totoro road and others, Abeokuta is like a bride waiting to be decked in colors of gold when the contractors complete the work at the site at the end of the rainy season.

    Amosun praised over land commission

The Commissioner, Federal Public Complaints Commission in Ogun State, Mr Wale Ogunbanjo has praised the State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun for establishing the Judicial Commission of Enquiry on Land Matters.

Giving the commendation in Abeokuta when he paid a courtesy call on the governor, Ogunbanjo said the recommendations of the land commission would right the wrongs of the past and ensure that the rights of land owners are restored to them.

He said the initiative was a bold step towards ensuring that no citizen of the State was cheated or oppressed unjustly, maintaining that his Commission was also set up to help indigent citizens seek redress and ensure that their rights were not trampled upon unjustly.

He therefore enjoined the State Government to make available to the people, its white paper on the recommendations of the panel, so that those that were affected directly can know what steps to take.

The Complaints Commissioner also acknowledged the State government’s intervention and cooperation with his agency, noting the financial assistance rendered to one Miss Omowunmi Akinola, a student of Abeokuta Grammar School, who was injured during a rain storm and the re-absorption of a staff of the State Signage and Advertising Agency, whose appointment was wrongfully terminated as instances.

Responding, the governor, represented by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Wemimo Ogunde (SAN) pledged that his administration will not relent in ensuring that the rights of all citizens of the state were protected and where trampled upon, necessary redress would be sought.

Amosun noted that the commission had been performing creditably in the protection of rights of Nigerians, promising that on its part, his administration would continue to render necessary assistance and support to the Commission
On the issue of Tolu Village, which the commissioner alleged was acquired for the Mobile Police Headquarters without due compensation to the original owners, Governor Amosun pledged that the issue would be looked into by the appropriate agency of government.

  • Amosun and Ogun Labour House

    Amosun and Ogun Labour House

SIR: I watched the news of the commissioning of the first ultra-modern secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ogun State chapter, on the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) network news on October 1, by the governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

Upon further enquiries, I realised that the governor played a major role in the construction of that very first edifice of the labour movement in Ogun State.

As an ex-labour leader, I felt particularly elated by the kind gesture of the governor. For me that was the only public event that made the National Day celebration worth its while.

Not many actually understand that both Labour and government are partners in progress and that any investment by the latter on the former will only foster better employer-employees relationship, increase productivity of workers, all in the overall interest of the entire citizenry.

Senator Amosun had reportedly said during the electioneering campaign in 2011 that he would help NLC with a new secretariat if its members gave their support to him in the election.

The fulfilment of this promise is an eloquent testimony to the credibility of Governor Amosun.

How often do many of our politicians renege on their promises after getting to power!

I commend Amosun not just for supporting Labour with this very first modern edifice in Ogun State but his commitment to payment of salaries of workers as and when due since his inauguration in May, 2011.

Finally, I appeal to the governor to clear the arrears of salaries, pensions and gratuities owed workers by the immediate past administration.

I know he inherited a lot of debt and has cleared some of the backlogs of salaries owed workers by Otunba Gbenga Daniel, but he should do more.

    Amosun seeks investments

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday urged well-placed indigenes to use their positions to attract investments to the state.

Amosun said a number of indigenes, like Dr. Mike Adenuga and Dr. Adesegun Akin-Olugbade, have followed the footsteps of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the late Dr. Tai Solarin, the late Mrs. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and Prof. Wole Soyinka, among others.

He said a lot was required of indigenes in developing the state.

Amosun spoke yesterday at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, during the nation’s 52nd Independence Anniversary.

He said Adenuga and Akin-Olugbade, who are recipients of this year’s national awards, have made the state proud.

The governor said: “As sons and daughters of Ogun State, we expect you all to contribute to the development of our dear state. Your contributions to the fulfilment of our five-cardinal programmes, as encapsulated in our ‘Mission to Rebuild’ our state, will promote its development.”
