Mo Abudu’s War; Akeredolu & Amotekun – film, cartoon, heroes?

Please watch Netflix’s Mo Abudu’s ‘War’ for an accurate reflection of the bad happenings in one part of Nigeria today and also including the sad massacre of over 200 normal Fellow Nigerian for the land sitting on minerals now soaked in their God-given blood. It reminds us of Plateau and Kaduna states’ recent terrible history. With a simple change in dialogue, this film can be applied as a template right across every single state and Federal Capital Territory (FCT)  – all facing some serious ‘INTERNALLY GENERATED MAYHEM’, caused usually by ‘greed’ orchestrated to be masqueraded as carefully targeted and funded political, civil service, private sector, ethnic and religious instigations.

We witness the sad passing, while in office, of the fiery Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, at 67 who magnificently played the leading role in what led to the foundation of the current security architecture instrument in the defence of the Southwest, Amotekun, against the type of state invasion so accurately portrayed in Mo Abudu’s War.

It should be only a matter of time before screen writers, if they have not already done so, tackle the research, recording and projection of the complex causes and results of personal, spousal, family, social, political and financial implications for themselves and society of the incumbent national and state politicians dying, denying dying, actually dying, dying but being incapacitated, dead but being on life-support, dead-not-alive, alive-not-dead.

Nigerians, already experienced in coping with the moral and other aspects of governor and presidential ‘rumour of death’ and ‘actual death’, are taking front-row seats in the already unfolding, real-life drama in Ondo as the new governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who was the immediate former and sometimes embattled deputy governor, has rightfully and legally, taken over and asks questions vis-à-vis the more recent executive activities attributed to the late governor.

Nigerians are also hoping that the new Ondo State governor will not follow the disgraceful, unproductive and financially ruinous bad example of so many Nigerian governors and even presidents. That bad example is to stop, without any good reason except ‘I-have-the-power’, good ‘people projects’ initiated by Governor Akeredolu. Such actions suspend the lives of the citizens and waste funds.

Of course, he may metamorphose into a formidable fighter for Ondo State so in need of stability of their ship of state, which was so savagely, so lethally, rocked by illness.

We pray that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa will be ‘legacy wise’ enough to continue the good work of further empowering Amotekun as one firm foundation for the curtailment of Southwest terrorism. Amotekun must be entrenched and above any political change, unless that political change is to further empower it. Amotekun must be above politicisation. It must serve the citizens. It will not pay the Ondo State government to disregard, diminish, destroy or denigrate late Governor Akeredolu’s role in the Ondo State Amotekun Legacy. Even dead heroes deserve their space.

The Ondo State  Amotekun Legacy is a really bright life-saving red beacon of light in the Nigerian forests of murderous local and international terrorists. It is a powerful historic legacy requiring to be immediately included in the curriculum of our schools. Our children need role models like Amotekun even as they are daily bombarded by FBI, CSI and personal, news and social media accounts of death and destruction from terrorist attacks.

By now the exploits of Amotekun and the armed forces and the police against the terrorists should be in comics and even on the screen in many movies and not just the one or two we find them in. Note that the federal government, the National Orientation Agency and state information agencies have collectively failed to observe one glaring fact in winning the war of motivating hearts and minds. Almost every film nowadays, even African, has the support of several host government, international agency or film foundations except in Nigeria where politics consumes every kobo but can spend billions on campaign mega-billboards!

It is obvious that Ondo State, with its scenery, amazing history and being almost the birthplace of Amotekun should have no hesitation in allocating funds in the 2024 budget for investment in writers, film makers and funding of Amotekun-based blockbuster films, comics, cartoons and such to motivate citizenry and recruit the right personnel and elevate Amotekun. Nigeria is still in search of non-political heroes. Nigerians wear the names of other people’s heroes, foreign flags and cities. Even Nollywood actors prefer foreign T-shirts. But fame comes from publicity. It was a huge repetitive churning out of historical programming that brought American heroes to a hero-hungry world. Nigeria must promote Nigerian heroes. TINAPA was touted as  a giant step forward. But the subsequent governor did not share the vision and shut it down costing the citizens millions in stagnant wasted funds. Look at Nollywood great success even without TINAPA. Congrats of Funke Akindele and A Tribe Called Judah grossing N1billion+. Imagine if Nollywood had had TINAPA all along?

Schools in enlightened states must seize the right to educate their students about how to negotiate the new threats and traumas the youth and their parents face. Beyond the rush at entrepreneurship, youth deserve to be much more ‘security empowered’ for survival. The danger is no longer just bullying!

“The ‘ember’ patrol is still ongoing. In the last one week, we were able to arrest 29 suspects that were involved in forms of security breaches ranging from kidnapping to armed robbery, house breaking, shop breaking, stealing of Okada. There is a particular suspect that left the correctional centre less than a week and went into the crime again, burglary.

“In the same way, those that were involved in illegal possession of firearms on our watch list in the last five months; we were able to apprehend some of them with locally made guns and pistols.”

Speaking on the reported attack in some communities in the state by bandits, Adeleye said there were no major cases of security breaches that his men did not rise up to curtail.

He said the state remained the safest.

Adeleye said the fake news was a cheap blackmail orchestrated by enemies of progress of the state with a view to discrediting the corps.

“We will continue to serve our people and provide quality security services we are reputed for. It was what all we know that the 18 local governments in Ondo State are safe from these criminal activities. We refuse to be distracted by the mischiefs makers, who are determined to undermine the integrity of Amotekun.”

He said reports that bandits invaded an Ondo community was a ruse, false , unbalanced and targeted at causing chaos in the state.

He noted: “It is so obvious that the said writer of the story did so,  for selfish gain from a quarter which the main intention was to dowse the morale of the corps in the state over such mischievous write up.

“We advice the general public to ignore such fake News and go about their legitimate businesses as the Akoko area of the state is safe for movement as the joint security agencies are fully on ground to ensure safety of lives and properties.”

Amotekun arraigns septuagenarian for kidnapping boss

A 75-year-old man, Basiru Mohammadu, has been arraigned before an Akure Magistrate’s Court for the kidnapping of his boss, Nelson Adeyemi, and Olaoye Olaniyi.

Basiru was arrested by men of the Ondo Amotekun Corps after the phone number the kidnappers were using to negotiate for ransom was found on his phone.

He was among 14 suspects arraigned before an Akure Magistrate’s Court, for various offences ranging from kidnapping, rape, armed robbery, and murder.

Amotekun nabs notorious kidnappers who razed buildings in Ondo

Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network codenamed Amotekun Corps have arrested a notorious kidnapper, Usman Garuba, whose gang razed down a village.

Garuba, aged 54, was arrested during a raid of his hideout at Ala Dada/Ago Oyinbo axis of Akure, the state capital.

He had been convicted twice and served jailed terms.

Ondo Commander of Amotekun Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, said Garuba successfully kidnapped nine persons and collected ransom from their families for their release.

He said villagers in one of the communities along the axis of Garuba’s operation challenged him but Garuba returned at midnight with his gang and set all the buildings in the camp ablaze.

Adeleye said Garuba was arrested alongside five members of his gang and items found on them included single barrel guns, bullets, amulets, money received as ransom, food items including half bag of beans, rice, some loaves of bread, rolls of cigarette and other consumable items.

The Amotekun boss spoke when he paraded 62 suspects arrested for kidnapping, rustling, and stealing among other crimes.

He said Abubakar was found to be in contact with kidnappers.

The Amotekun boss stated that the ember month patrol was strategic to guarantee the safety of lives and properties in the State and for those passing through the highways.

He said: “We have another group that breaks into people’s houses during church service when they know that they would have gone out and we have those that steal goats. The vehicle over there was arrested yesterday fully loaded with goats and we went round Idanre and Ondo West local government where they like ‘Asun’. So, it will be easy for them to sell the goat but they were caught in the act.

“What we are saying in effect is that there is no hiding place for criminals in Ondo State because they will be caught. Therefore, they should leave the state.”

  • Amotekun battles surging crimes in Southwest

Amotekun battles surging crimes in Southwest

Southwest states’ security outfit, Amotekun, is combating rising insecurity, particularly kidnapping, which has surged in the region.

Amotekun, which was established in 2020, and commenced operation in 2021 in the six states, has recorded successes in tackling kidnapping and armed robbery.

But, rising crimes are giving residents concern over its ability to sustain its feats.

Kidnapping, cult clashes and armed robbery have recently increased in Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and Ogun states, and unleashed panic.

Between July and September, kidnappers were on the prowl, abducting commuters on some roads.

    Ekiti:

On July 2, gunmen abducted four persons along the Oke-Ako-Irele Road in Ikole Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred at about 7:30pm, involved the  occupants of two vehicles – a commercial car and a truck conveying charcoal.

Five days after the Oke Ako incident, the All Progressives Congress (APC) state chairman, Paul Omotoso, a lawyer, was abducted alongside two persons on Agbado-Imesi Road. Rransom was believed to have been paid before their release four days after.

On September 4, arms-wielding attackers invaded Itapaji-Ekiti in Ikole Council, killing one person and abducting two people, who were held hostage for five days before they were released on September 3.

But, the activities of the kidnappers and other criminal elements are currently on downward trend as a result of the proactive measures taken by Amotekun in the six states.

The Special Adviser to Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji on security, Brig-Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana, said Ekiti is safe and peaceful as a result of the collaborative efforts of the security agencies.

He said: “Before now, the Oke Ako – Irele – Ayedun Road was a no-go area. But now, it isn’t so. Security agencies have worked round the clock to ensure that people in that area can go about their daily activities because that area is an investment hub. We don’t want to discourage our investors. So, we had to invest everything we could, to ensure the place became safe.”

    Ondo:

In Ondo State, kidnapping and other criminal activities appear to be on the rise in recent times, despite the fact that Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) has been in the forefront of the Amotekun initiative.

Last month, 19 members of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), who were on a journey to a wake-keep were kidnapped at Ifon, Ose Local Government Area. Eight of the victims managed to escape due to pressure from security operatives, but others spent seven days in the kidnappers’ den before they were released after ransom payment.

In October, a driver and his eight passengers were ambushed by armed robbers in Ondo town, along Ayeyemi area. The  robbers,  who were armed with dangerous weapons, robbed their victims and made away with several items, including the sum of N16m.

Last week, one Onifade Kazeem was abducted at Ago Oyinbo/Ago Dada Community via Ala. He paid N1m ransom before he was released.

Recently, an alert by a commercial driver prevented the abduction of a 13-year old boy identified as Abraham Stephen, who lives in Odo Ijimo Iyere Owo, Owo Local Government Area. The victim was being abducted to Ibadan when he was rescued.

Ondo State Amotekun Commandant, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, said the trend was in line with rising criminal activities in ‘ember months’ every year.

He said the release of the kidnapped CAC members was due to pressure from security operatives.

He stated that the security outfit has arrested over 7,000 criminals across the state within the last three years of its operation.

    Ogun:

In Ogun State, Amotekun is battling cultists and other criminals.

The deputy commander of the corps in the Gateway State,  Cdr. Aina Oluwakayode, said there was a relative drop in crime rate, following the emergence of Amotekun, which is supporting and complementing other security agencies.

He added: “Generally, crime rates have been on the decline in Ogun State and Amotekun Corps has been performing its functions to complement the efforts of other security agencies to make the state safer for residents, investors and businesses.”

Oluwakayode said even when the corps had just come out of bereavement with the demise of its commandant, the late David Akinremi, a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), who passed on in June this year, its efforts at combating crimes have been successful.

Oluwakayode said the operatives have foiled many crimes and arrested crime suspects in recent times, including a 34-year-old Adebiyi Samuel, who fled Lekki Phase II, Lagos and hid himself in Ijebu-Igbo area of Ogun State after he had allegedly murdered his 27-year old wife, Serah Ogungbe.

Security situation is only a bit better in Osun State.

In the past few months, kidnapping has been on the increase in Osogbo, the state capital.

The Commandant of Amotekun, Brig-Gen. Bashir Adewinmbi (rtd), identified two major challenges facing the outfit, which he said Governor Ademola Adeleke has tackled

The challenges are inadequate personnel and inability of the corps to bear arms.

But the commandant disclosed that Adeleke has already given approval for recruitment of 700 personnel for the corps.

    Oyo:

In Oyo State, the level of kidnapping and farmers-herders clashes in Oke-Ogun and Ibarapa area has dropped.

Prior to the establishment of Amotekun, Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road, Ibadan-Lagos Road, and Oyo-Ogbomoso Road were invaded by kidnappers. But the efforts of security operatives, particularly Amotekun, have  yielded positive results in preventing criminal activities.

Now, farmers are able to farm without fear while every part of the state is peaceful.

Oyo Amotekun, with over 1,500 personnel spread across different parts of the state, has in recent times incorporated community intelligence gathering strategy into its operations, which has made the corps to reinvent itself in a bid to serve the people better.

A source said there are obvious challenges confronting the state command. According to the source, the refusal of the Federal Government to allow Amotekun personnel to bear sophisticated arms, particularly AK47, makes the operatives vulnerable to criminals who are carrying heavy arms.

He said: “ Inability to carry appropriate weapons, particularly AK47, has been a major drawback for the Amotekun corps. The criminals that are increasingly confronting them, both within and in city outskirts, are usually well armed, hence, in certain instances, Amotekun must wait for the arrival of the police before they can chase after them.

“But it must be said that in spite of this, the bravery displayed on several occasions has been simply amazing.”
