DAWN Commission calls for policing reform, celebrates Amotekun’s fifth anniversary

The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission has called for comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s security framework, advocating for the decentralization of policing across the country.

In a statement marking the fifth anniversary of the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, the Commission lauded its achievements as a transformative milestone in Nigeria’s security landscape.

The Director-General of DAWN, Dr. Seye Oyeleye, praised Amotekun as a trailblazer in community policing, noting its remarkable success in enhancing regional security and integration in the Southwest.

“Amotekun has not only silenced critics but also exceeded expectations, proving wrong those who feared it might be misused for political or ethnic purposes,” Oyeleye said.

He commended the security outfit for maintaining professionalism and earning the trust of communities by protecting all residents, regardless of ethnicity or political affiliation.

The DAWN Commission reiterated its call for a decentralized policing system to replicate Amotekun’s success nationwide, ensuring improved security and better community engagement across Nigeria.

Oyeleye said: “The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission today commemorates the fifth anniversary of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, marking a transformative milestone in Nigeria’s security landscape.

“Launched in Ibadan on January 9, 2020, Amotekun has emerged as a beacon of innovative community policing, demonstrating remarkable success in fostering regional security and integration across Nigeria’s southwest region.

“This first-of-its-kind security network, midwifed by the DAWN Commission with the backing of the Southwest Governors Forum (SWGF), has proven to be a game-changer in addressing local security challenges.

“Five years on, Amotekun has definitively silenced critics and exceeded expectations. The agency has shown that state-level security agencies can operate professionally and effectively while maintaining the trust of local communities.

“Amotekun’s track record has challenged initial concerns about potential misuse for political purposes or ethnic agendas. Instead, it has established itself as a model of professionalism, earning widespread community trust through its commitment to protecting all residents, regardless of ethnicity or political affiliation.”

“The success of Amotekun demonstrates the viability of state-led security initiatives in Nigeria’s federal structure and provides a template for other regions considering similar security frameworks.

“The DAWN Commission particularly commends the dedication of Amotekun Commanders and operatives, some of whom have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. Their bravery and commitment, despite a challenging environment, continue to ensure the safety and security of the Southwest region.

“Our special commendation also goes to the Governors of Southwest States for their unwavering support and funding for this critical agency,” he added.

With the highest investment in personnel and equipment, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has succeeded in making the state security agency code-named Amotekun a model in Southwest.

The Nation’s research shows the agency boasts of 2,500 operatives, a figure higher than those of other states combined. This makes Oyo Amotekun have visible presence and success stories in the 33 local governments of the state.

The agency also has 182 well-serviced patrol vans and cars, as well as 450 motorcycles used to penetrate rural communities and other hard-to-reach areas across the state.

In addition to the above personnel and equipment, Governor Makinde also gives moral support to motivate the agency, always pointing out that the state as a federating unit enjoys the freedom to operate such agency in its fundamental duty to protect residents, property and investments.

The operatives also enjoy health and life insurance to cater for medical bills and compensation in case of death.

Given its many success stories, Oyo Amotekun has justified its establishment, strengthening the need to practise true federalism.

Hailing the agency in a recent interview on radio, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Mr Ayodele Shonubi, said: “Amotekun has been a vitally useful agency in securing Oyo State. Nobody sees them as competitor. They are playing their complimentary roles these days; and effectively too. We don’t have enough manpower. The synergy is working well. A good example was when there was an explosion in Ibadan. Amotekun did well in securing the site against looting by hoodlums throughout the period of clearing the rubble. Other security agencies also did well. That synergy was good and we have kept it since then.”

The choice of Amotekun (Leopard) as the nomenclature for the Southwest Security Network Agency was borne out of the versatility of the big cat in hunting, which reflects in its speed, strong teeth and claws, ability to operate on ground, on trees and in water, as well as its impressive skills in hunting, with emphasis on its precision in pouncing on preys.

The establishment of Amotekun came on the heels of rising cases of kidnapping and other criminalities, which reached a crescendo mid-2019 when Governor Makinde took over in Oyo State. Joining his brother governors in Southwest, Makinde took a leading role in ensuring the agency was able to operate in spite of opposition from the then Federal Government.

PDP vows to resist alleged ploy to draft Amotekun for Ondo polls

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has vowed to resist any attempt to drag the Amotekun Corps into next month’s governorship election.

It alleged the reappointment of Akogun Adetunji Adeleye was a ploy to make the Amotekun Corps play roguish roles like hooliganism and thuggery activities ahead of the elections.

Special Adviser, Media and Publicity of the PDP campaign council, Ayo Fadaka, in a press statement issued in Akure, described the plan as an abuse of power and privileges that would be counter-productive with very deep consequences.

Fadaka said a chieftain of the party,  Folarin Oyenusi, was shot at while travelling with his family at Ile-Oluji community.

He alleged that “barracks” have been opened for thugs across the state and promised to furnish security agencies  addresses of hotels and facilities being used for the purposes.

Fadaka stated that the APC planned to  cause security scare in many local government areas with a view to arrest  chieftains of the PDP.

“We once again call upon the security agencies to take their briefs seriously and nip all sinister and criminal plots of the APC in the bud in the interest of peace in the State.”

But Ondo APC Director of Media, Steve Otaloro, said there were no Security Committee in the Aiyedatiwa Campaign Council and no plan to involve Amotekun Corps

Otaloro stated that the Amotekun Corps remained a professional body dedicated to protecting the people and not engaging in politics.

“‘The PDP’s allegations of violence, thuggery, and plans to cause security scares are also baseless. In fact, it’s the PDP that’s been crying wolf, trying to distract from their own lack of preparation for the election. We urge the security agencies to investigate these claims and bring perpetrators to justice.

“Our campaign is focused on issues, not misinformation. We’re committed to working for the people, not spreading false allegations. The PDP should join us in promoting a peaceful and issue-based campaign.”
