    AMVCA: Organisers call for entries for 12th edition

    Africa Magic, organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), has officially opened the call for entries for the 12th edition of the continental film awards.

    Entry submission for the awards ceremony was opened on Sunday, January 11 and will be closed on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

    Filmmakers and content creators across the continent have been urged to submit their work for consideration.

    The AMVCA remains MultiChoice’s flagship initiative dedicated to recognising, celebrating, and rewarding exceptional African storytelling across film and television.

    The 12th edition will once again spotlight the growth, creativity, and global potential of Africa’s entertainment industry, while reinforcing the AMVCA’s position as the continent’s most prestigious awards platform.

    Building on a legacy of recognising both established and emerging talent, the 12th AMVCA introduces key enhancements that deepen its pan-African reach. The edition expands its Indigenous Language categories with the introduction of: Best Indigenous Language – North Africa, and Best Indigenous Language – Central Africa.

    The 12th AMVCAs will feature 32 award categories, including 18 jury-decided categories and 11 audience-voted categories, alongside two special recognition awards for Lifetime Achievement and one Trailblazer award.

    The awards ceremony will take place in Lagos, Nigeria, in May 2026.

    After multiple consecutive years of enjoying the spotlight as the headline sponsor for the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, AMVCA, Amstel Malta has bowed out of the spot for a new brand.

    In a recent development, MultiChoice, a Canal Plus company, in partnership with Diageo, announced Don Julio as the headline sponsor of the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) scheduled for 2026.

    According to the brands, the partnership marks the beginning of a strategic upgrade of the continent’s most prestigious celebration of film and television excellence.

    The partnership between MultiChoice and Don Julio is ushering in a bold new chapter in celebrating Africa’s brightest talents. It was further highlighted that the collaboration sets the stage for a reimagined awards experience. The 12th AMVCAs will mark the debut of the Don Julio AMVCAs – a fresh era defined by premium storytelling and unforgettable cultural moments.

    Speaking on the partnership, Atinuke Babatunde, Executive Head Content and Channels MultiChoice, said: “The AMVCAs has always celebrated the best of African film and television. As we step into this new era, Don Julio brings a spirit of global excellence that perfectly mirrors the artistry of our filmmakers, actors, and storytellers.     With the upgrade from Nigeria Breweries Amstel Malta to Diageo’s Don Julio as headline sponsor, the 2026 edition of AMVCA, according to the organisers, promises to be the most premium and culturally resonant yet.

    Chinenye ‘Chichi’ Nworah has picked up her second AMVCA gong. The award was for her creation, ‘My FairyTale wedding,’ which features Ini Edo and Ramsey Nouah.

    In another recognition of her ingenious contributions to African films, the Nollywood powerhouse clinched the Best Scripted M-Net Original award at the 11th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).

    The latest triumph follows Nworah’s previous AMVCA successes.

    In 2023, her gritty Netflix series Shanty Town garnered ten nominations and global acclaim, ranking as Netflix’s most-streamed African Original in Nigeria in the first half of 2023.

    In 2024, Slum King won Best Scripted M-Net Original, lauded for its raw portrayal of resilience in Lagos’ underbelly.

    Taking to her social media, Nworah celebrated the My Fairytale Wedding win, posting: “My Fairytale Wedding – Best M-Net Original (Scripted series) AMVCA 11 #amvca11. Congratulations to Team My Fairytale Wedding!”

    She also teased fans with suspense, adding, “Excited about What’s Next @giantcreativestudios. Coming soon.”

    Actor and producer Ibrahim Chatta has clarified that his absence from the 2025 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) nominations wasn’t due to snubbing by organisers but because he didn’t submit any film for consideration.

    According to him on “Curiosity Made Me Ask” with Isbaeu, Chatta said he isn’t interested in the award, explaining that whenever he’s interested in participating, he’ll produce a film and submit it for evaluation.

    “I am not interested in the AMVCA. Why should I be praying for something that I am not interested in? Whenever I am interested to go for the AMVCA, I will make a film and submit the film so that I can be rated and check if I was worthy of the award,” Chatta stated firmly.

    The celebrated actor, known for his gripping performances in Yoruba-language films, also attributed his low profile to being introverted, speculating that organisers might assume he wouldn’t attend events even if recognised.

    “I ask myself why I have not been invited. You know, I am not a very social person, so maybe they think if they give me [an award], I won’t show up. Maybe that was why I wasn’t invited,” he added.

    Chatta went on to highlight the numerous awards he has already received over the course of his career, downplaying the importance of one particular award ceremony.

    “Do you know how many awards I have? Nelson Mandela award, Pink Award from Wole Soyinka, I have one from Odunlade Adekola and many others,” he noted.
