    AMVCAs: Over N9 billion spent in 10 years to organise award ceremony

    A total of nine billion Naira have been spent in organising, training, and logistics for the past editions of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, AMVCAs.

    The revelation was made known by Dr. Busola Tejumola, the Executive Head of Content & Channels, West Africa at MultiChoice.

    Speaking on the impact of the AMVCA, Dr. Tejumola said, “since inception in 2013, the AMVCAs have injected over N623 billion into the film and television economy, N9 billion in awards events, training, and logistics, creating over 27000 long and short-term jobs through the development of critical skills and honouring the industry stars.”

    Preparations are already in motion for the 10th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, AMVCAs, scheduled to be held between May 1o and May 11, 2024.

    According to the organisers, MultiChoice in collaboration with Africa Magic, the 10th edition of the AMVCA awards will showcase 27 categories, including 16 non-voting and 9 audience-voting categories.

    A panel of industry experts, once again led by Femi Odugbemi, will assess the submissions. The judging process will be audited by Deloitte to ensure transparency and credibility.

    Some of the leading brands that have thrown their weight behind the 10th AMVCAs include MTN Nigeria, and Amstel Malta.

    MultiChoice and Africa Magic, the organisers of Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards have announced that the 10th edition of the AMVCAs is scheduled to take place from May 10 to May 11.

    The event, according to the organisers, will span two days, showcasing talents in film production, culture, fashion, music, and various aspects of African entertainment as well as the creative industry.

    In the same vein, veteran film director, producer and writer, Femi Odugbemi was announced as the Head Judge for the 10th AMVCA.

    The schedule for the 2024 edition of the film and TV awards was recently announced at a media gathering.

    “We are on the verge of revival, revival in the African film and TV industry, a revival that would see the emergence of even greater talents and production. The submissions of this year are a testament to this revival. Over the past 10 years, the AMVCA has become a beacon of excellence recognizing and honouring outstanding talent, creativity and dedication within the African yellow and film television landscape” Dr Tejumola, Multi Choice’s executive head of content and channels said.

    The nominee announcement will be on March 24 at 8pm,  across all Africa Magic channels, after which the voting portal will open.

    Femi Odugbemi, Head judge of the 10th AMVCA said the AMVCA has created recognition and celebration as well as providing a platform for celebrating the achievement of talented actors, filmmakers, directors and industry professionals across Africa.

    “The nominations of the AMVCAs are determined by a specific criteria and processes and established by the jury in conjunction with Deloitte. Some key criteria for nomination would include the eligibility period; films that entered within the eligibility period and for this award, it spans from December 2022 to December 2023” Femi added.

    Organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) have confirmed May 10 and 11, 2024 as the slated dates for the 10th edition of the award.

    The event which will be hold in Lagos is an annual award ceremony that celebrates the artistic and technical merits in the movie industry around the African continent.

    Organisers announced this at a media launch/press conference held at  MultiChoice office, Ilupeju, Lagos.

    Day one of the AMVCA starts on May 10th with the MTF & Digital Day, followed by Opening Night, celebrating film production talents, culture, fashion, music, and other elements of African entertainment, while day two, May 11th, is the big day, the live AMVCA Awards event.

    The nominees list for this year’s edition will be announced on Sunday, March 24th, 2024, at 8P.M WAT.

    Speaking about the impact of the event in the movie industry, Busola Tejumola, Executive Head, Content & Channels, West Africa at MultiChoice said the impact the AMVCAs have had on the movie industry across the continent is undeniable.

    “Let me give you some numbers – since inception in 2013, the AMVCAs have injected over N623 billion into the film and television economy, N9 billion in awards events, training, and logistics, creating over 27 000 long & short-term jobs through the development of critical skills and honoring the industry stars,” she stated.

    Speaking on the nominations for each category, one of the organisers and head judge, Femi Odugbemi said it is subjective to “specific criterias and processes” by the jury.

    “The nominations of the AMVCA are determined by specific criterias and processes determined by the jury in conjunction with Delloite. Some of the key criterias taken into consideration for nominations include the eligibility period, categories, the submissions process and voting process”.

    The organisers had earlier revealed that some changes had been made to this year’s edition of the award ceremony.

    One of such major changes is that the award categories have been reduced from 33 to 27, adding that the development was in order “to meet global trends and standards”.

    The 10th edition of AMVCA will now see winners in 25 categories including 2 special recognition awards.

    MultiChoice, in partnership with Africa Magic, organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), has announced that the 10th edition of its prestigious awards will hold on May 10 and 11.

    The organisers also unveiled ace filmmaker, director, producer, and pioneer Academy Director of the MultiChoice Talent Factory, Femi Odugbemi, as head judge of the awards.

    MultiChoice’s Executive Head of Content and Channels for West Africa, Dr. Busola Tejumola, described the 10th AMVCA as a celebration to mark a decade of brilliance, innovation, and the sheer magic of African storytelling on screen.

    The AMVCA has established itself as the benchmark for excellence in the African film industry.

    This year’s edition, MultiChoice said, would be the celebration of excellence in filmmaking and a heritage of an award that has improved careers and boosted talent development on the continent.

    Dr. Tejumola said the pool of quality entries received for the awards had tasked the jury and head judge to ensure quality review.

    “For this edition, we received entries from films and talent across Africa. Shortlisting has begun and we will now move to the judging phases.

    “For this special edition, we are making changes to the award categories. The Best Actor and Best Actress, as well as the Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories will now be determined by the jury. We are also delighted to announce ace filmmaker, director and producer, Femi Odugbemi, as the Head Judge for the 10th AMVCA.

    “In partnership with our sponsors, Amstel, Pepsi, Promasidor, and Martell, we call on Africa to join in this celebration as we begin with the announcement of final nominees in each category, live across all Africa Magic channels, on March 24, at 8 p.m. The voting portal will open immediately after the announcement,” Tejumola said. 

    The 10th AMVCA’s two-day celebration will begin on May 10 with the Young Filmmakers and Content Creators event in the morning, followed by the Cultural Day and Opening Night celebration in the evening, while the Main Awards ceremony will hold the night of May 11, the organisers said.

    Commenting on the task before the award jury, Odugbemi said: “This prestigious award is celebrated for its unwavering dedication to excellence. The jury remains steadfast in ensuring that only the most outstanding works earn a spot on the nomination list.

    “Having served as the head judge in previous editions, I can unequivocally state that evaluating the remarkable submissions by talent across Africa is an extremely challenging task I assure everyone that the final selection will truly represent the best in the field.”

    AMVCAs: Organisers make changes as 10th edition draws nearer

    Africa Magic and Multichoice, owners of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards have announced new changes to the continental awards ceremony in line with global trends and benchmarks.

    This was recently announced by the Head of Content and Channels West Africa, MultiChoice, Dr. Busola Tejumola.

     “Over the past decade, Africa Magic has steadfastly upheld its commitment to spotlighting authentic African stories, especially those that mirror our diverse and rich cultures. As we mark the 10th anniversary of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, we embark on a bold initiative to reevaluate our award categories to further align with global trends and benchmarks. It would involve retiring specific categories, streamlining others, and revisiting the voting and non-voting classifications”.

    According to the organisers, the 10th edition of AMVCAs will award winners in 25 categories, 16 non-voting & 9 audience voting categories, and two recognition awards, Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer Awards.

    In the same vein, the performance awards, which were formerly determined by the viewers and public, have undergone streamlining and will fall under the categories of Best Actor or Best Actress in a Leading or Supporting Role, with winners determined by the jury.

    The non-voting categories include Best Lead Actor and Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Director, Art Direction, Cinematography, and Costume Design. More categories include Best Writing in a Movie and TV Series, Best Movie and TV Series, Best Short Film, Best Documentary, and Best Sound Design, Editing, and Makeup.

    As done previously, the jury, consisting of experienced filmmakers from across the continent and led by a head juror, will determine the winners in the 16 non-voting categories, whilst the public will determine the winners in the remaining eight audience voting categories. As always, Deloitte will audit the judging process and verify the voting results.

    The power of the public votes will now determine winners in categories like Best Scripted and Unscripted Africa Magic Original, Best Digital Content Creator, Best Indigenous Language (West, East, and Southern Africa), Best Multichoice Talent Factory Film, and Best Indigenous Africa Magic Original.

    As date for the much anticipated sixth edition of Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) gets closer, organisers have urged fans to continue to vote voting their favourite actors and actresses in a movie or TV series.

    The seven categories open to public voting at this year’s edition include: Best Actor in a Comedy (Movie/TV Series), Best Actor in a Drama (Movie/TV Series), Best Supporting Actor in a Drama (Movie/Series), Best Actress in a Comedy (Movie/TV Series), Best Actress in a Drama (Movie/TV Series), Best Supporting Actress in a Drama (Movie/Series) and Best Short Film or Online Video.

    Participants are urged to visit the Africa Magic website at www.africamagic.dstv.com and click on the AMVCA 2018 tab to vote their favourite nominees before the closing date of Sunday, August 24, 2018.

  • ‘Nominees for AMVCA Award Out June 30’

    Nominees for the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) will be announced via a televised broadcast on all Africa Magic channels on DStv and GOtv on Saturday, 30 June at 7pm WAT.

    The nominees for each category will be revealed by popular Ghanaian actress and TV host, Joselyn Dumas and Nigerian comedian and actor, Bovi. The 2018 AMVCAs is brought to viewers across the continent by Africa Magic in association with MultiChoice and the sponsors, Airtel and Konga.

    Speaking on the milestone telecast, Channel Director, Africa Magic, Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu, revealed that close to 3000 entries were received across the continent.

    She also said that the judging panel spearheaded by veteran filmmaker, Debbie Odutayo, painstakingly reviewed each of the entries to arrive at the final shortlist of nominees.

    Launched in March 2013, the AMVCAs continue to celebrate the contributions of African filmmakers, actors and technicians to the success of the continent’s film and television industry.

    For the 2018 edition, a number of awards will be presented in 27 categories, with seven categories open to public voting and 20 being categories to be decided by the AMVCA panel of judges.

  • Debbie Odutayo to head 2018 AMVCA jury

    Ahead of the sixth edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), organisers of the reward system, Africa Magic, have announced the appointment of veteran film and television professional, Deborah “Debbie” Odutayo as Head Judge.

    Speaking on Mrs. Odutayo’s appointment, Director of M-Net West Africa, Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu, said: “Debbie Odutayo is a respected and seasoned television professional who brings extensive experience and renown to the AMVCA judging process. Her appointment as Head Judge is in tandem with the AMVCAs being the biggest celebration of film and television talent in Africa, with its impact seen in the improvement of the quality of entries, year after year. Debbie’s appointment reiterates yet again our commitment to excellence and professionalism, even as the AMVCAs mark another milestone by entering the sixth successive year.”

    Odutayo boasts of over 30 years’ experience spanning television production, content creation and administration, and is famous for being one half of the brains behind Nigeria’s leading content creation and production company, Royal Roots Communication Network, which birthed Royal Roots Television (R2TV) and Royal Roots FM (R2 92.9FM) in Ibadan, Oyo State.

    She is the immediate past President of the Electronic Media Content Owners Association of Nigeria (EMCOAN), the umbrella body for Corporate TV Content Producers in Nigeria, serving as the first woman President of the association. She is a Member of the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), and was also the very first Nigerian female judge for the first AMVCAs whilst serving as a judge on other editions.

    “Besides being renowned and respected in the African film and TV space, Debbie also boasts experience with the AMVCA judging process, having worked on all previous editions. We are thrilled to have her with us as Head Judge, and we ask that our viewers stay tuned as preparations for the show enter the final stages,” Mba-Uzoukwu added.

    The 2018 AMVCAs will be broadcast live on all Africa Magic channels September 1, 2018.
