    ANA intensifies literary campaigns

It is getting sweeter and more interesting by the day. As if it is a timed moment, all state chapters of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) are in the quest to promote literature and other literary matters in their states. Since the year began, the literary scene has been awash with ANA members doing their best in their states. The leaders of ANA in the states along with other committed members have put in place many mouth-watering literary programmes that have so far astounded the public. Even the Abuja chapter which hosts the national headquarters of the authors’ body is also up and doing, organizing stimulating programmes now and then.

There have readings and the literary razzmatazz in these places to celebrate creativity. The readings which bring both the old and the young writers together hinge essentially on topics and themes that take care of issues that befit the people. Writers have used the opportunity of these readings to network. Issues revolving around the promotion of literature of a society, a society at crossroads, have come to dominate discussions. At some point however, some prominent Nigerian politicians and leaders of thought who are interested in the affairs of literature and authors have been invited to lend their voices.

From Delta, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, and others, the monthly readings have of course ignited the minds of the writers. Now with different themes and different artist in place, the Yusuf Ali (SAN) yearly monetary donation has also be of immense help. As artists gather every month to brainstorm on issues that trouble Nigeria, the basic things occupying their attention is how to find ways to allow literature prosper and yield the necessary fruits. The Yusuf Ali largesse, no doubt has been of immense assistance to literature in Nigeria and beyond.

For now, more writers are praying for more Nigerians to show interest in promoting literature. A lot of young writers need to be encouraged. More primary and secondary schools have to be reached by the older writers, teaching and encouraging on what to do to become authors. The idea of the literary campaigns by the state chapters and the national headquarters of ANA are geared to keep the creative scene stronger, fresher and more active.

It has been noted over the years that ANA officials have attracted more new writers into the fold vial this means. What it shows is that when the literary campaigns is consisted and intensify, it usually creates more ample room for many young writers to grow and hone their skills. At the moment, ANA president Dr. Dipo Akanbi is wired to give his best to this campaign. He has been consistently transparent about it, ensuring that state chapters do not relent. Although the monies for the campaigns appear little, the idea is to use it to do the much that can be done. And as he now prepares for this year’s annual convention in Abuja, Akanbi is not deterred by pockets of financial constraints here and there. He also believes that ANA can do better if more Nigerians and sponsors channel their resource towards the promotion of literature and other creative matters and exigencies.

So as the states try to make do with the little they have, it is hoped that the benefit will be felt everywhere and across the nook and cranny of the localities. And when this happens it will be an added advantage to the pool of knowledge in the society. Already some schools in some local government area of the states have begun to commend ANA and even asking for more accelerated presence through vial book donations and so on.

  • Why I give grant to ANA yearly – Yusuf Ali

Why I give grant to ANA yearly – Yusuf Ali

Yusuf Ali (SAN) is one of the greatest supporters and financiers of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). During the recent visit to his office in Ilorin, by members of ANA, he used the opportunity to reveal why and how he decided to be giving monetary grants to the association since ten years ago. Edozie Udeze reports.

Part of what dominated the gathering of state chairmen and secretaries of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) along with the officials of the national body in Ilorin, Kwara State, last week was an official visit to Yusuf Ali (SAN). Each time this sort of gathering takes place in Ilorin, there must be a scheduled visit to Ali at his hallowed law chambers in town. Basically, Yusuf Ali is one of the foremost financiers and supporters of ANA. At every moment, authors look forward to this visit because it affords each and every one of them the rare opportunity to meet with this revered legal luminary, one of the best Senior Advocates of Nigeria that Nigeria has ever produced.

This year’s visit was topical, topical in the sense that it came with lots of exchanges of banters and laughter and pleasantries. As usual, the president of ANA, Dr. Dipo Akanbi was in his best mood. A doctorate degree holder in Agricultural Economics and a teacher at the University of Ilorin, Akanbi exhibited the same mannerisms for which his late father, Justice Mustapha Akanbi was known. Mustapha was the pioneer chairman of ICPC, a position he handled with unbridled impeccability and transparency.

While introducing members of his team, Dr. Akanbi noted that every one of them is a professional in one field of endeavour or the other. This filled Ali’s heart with joy for he quickly realized that Nigerian writers and authors are committed professionals who still find time to produce books. For them all, writing is a passion; it is like a hobby, a hobby that is infused with profusion and zeal. While paying obeisance to Yusuf Ali, Akanbi noted thus: “For ten years now you have been giving ANA the sum of three million naira yearly to help in the promotion of literacy in Nigeria, particularly in the states. You have been consistent with this gesture, even when it appears the times are hard. This year, you did not hesitate to do the same. It is a thing of joy that we have a lover of literature in you and you have never let us down.

“Even when the insecurity in Nigeria is intense and frightening and most families find it near impossible to survive; we have our members who braved it from their different states to be here in Ilorin. As a leader, you Ali have been showing this zealous intervention unabridged since time. No organization or so has been able to do so for us. It shows how selfless a Nigerian you have become in the affairs of this society. Even as things have become so difficult, you are still the same person, doing all you can to fulfill your promises. For all these and more, we thank you. We as members of ANA are eternally grateful”, Akanbi concluded.

An elated Ali was full of smiles and adulation. He took time to trace his relationship with ANA. He revealed how and why and when and where he began to show interest openly in the affairs that concern ANA. As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who has handled many legal cases for his clients, Ali has had opportunities to meet many important Nigerians across creed, tribe and geographical divide. In one of those experiences, he had met Dr. Wale Okediran. Okediran was then a member of the Federal House of Representatives. Okediran was not only the president of ANA that time he had contested to be a senator. Incidentally he lost in the election. The case went to court. And Yusuf Ali was the counsel to his opponent at the tribunal.

Even though Okediran lost the court case, Ali met him on a different issue entirely; the issue of the affairs of the Association of Nigerian Authors. In the process of a discussion that ensued between the two, Ali volunteered to be giving some amount of money to ANA yearly. The intention basically is to use the money as a grant to create literacy awareness across Nigeria. So far, the gesture has been tremendous; it has helped to inspire states to push literacy and literary matters to the nooks and cranny of the states.

Ali described the early beginning of this relationship as an odyssey. He said, “It is my pleasure to host you all today. For me, the process of learning is ever continuous. But by the way, my odyssey with ANA was accidental. I started helping ANA due to my connection with Dr. Wale Okediran… whatever field we find ourselves, nonetheless, we need not fight over issues. This was why the idea of this grant came up. There is no state in Nigeria I have not had one or two legal cases to handle. This has afforded me ample time to know Nigeria lots better. But in all this, we know that writing is a passion. We have been encouraged the way you have been handling the small money i give to you… reading culture in Nigeria is dying”, he said with seriousness.

He equally revealed that he was once a playwright. Beyond that, the play was at a time staged in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. So from the word go, Yusuf Ali’s interest in literary matters had been uppermost. However, he has since moved on to write bigger and fatter books on law and legal matters. He said, “Don’t give up writing. With time, people will come round to your works to read and appreciate what you have written. I promise that one day I will find time to attend your programmes either here in Ilorin or elsewhere. Now, also, do everything in moderation. Whatever you do, do not stress yourself too much about what you cannot have. You need only a little to live on. Live life in moderation. When you acquire too much where will it lead you? Be satisfied with yourself. Every society has its own dregs… so my grouse with our leaders is that they grab and corner so much wealth that they do not need…”

Ali was pressed to reveal the secret of his youthful looks. At nearly 70, Ali appears ever gregarious and energetic, athletic and young. “Let me just tell you the secret. I exercise a lot. I do road walks most times. Just a few days ago, I and my team did eleven kilometer trek. So you can do so if you will”, he admonished as authors heralded and applauded him.

Ernest Onuoha is an author, administrator and politician. In this encounter with Edozie Udeze, he talks about why he was conferred with the fellow of the Association of Nigerian Authors. He was one of those that received it during the last convention in Abuja.

You were one of those inducted into the fellow of the Association of Nigerian Authors during the 2023 convention. What does this mean to you as an Author and to the body of Writers generally?

The “Fellow” distinction is bestowed by professional organizations upon individuals who are recognized as leaders in their field, and the Association of Nigerian Authors, a body of Writers deemed it fit to induct me into the revered College of Fellows of the Association.  As a Writer, a novelist, a Poet and Essayist, with four major publications in two genres of literature; Challenges of Existence(1999); Biafra: the Victims(2012); Tomorrow in our Hands(2013) and Beauty in the Rubble(2018) and contributions into various anthologies, journals and newspapers with over thirty five participations in various Colloquiums, workshops, conventions and seminars, I feel fulfilled.

I have previously served the Association of Nigerian Authors at the State level, as State Chairman; I have also served the National body for four years as a Member of the National Executive Council and Chairman, Finance and general purpose Committee. With this elevation I am dedicated to serve even more the Association and make more contributions to its development and literary creativity.

Abia State chapter of ANA seems to be in a lull now in terms of activities. What is the correct situation?

The Association of Nigeria Authors, Abia State Chapter is not in any lull. We elected new executive members and led by Mr Uzoma Chukwudifu, a Senior lecturer with Abia State Polytechnic. We are having our monthly readings; some of our old members are giving more attention to the Association. The new Executive have mapped out 2024 to publish volume two of ANA Abia Journal, which will be a collection of poems, short stories, drama and essays.

As an Author, administrator and politician, how do you combine the three?

Good time management helps a lot in planning ones activities to optimize the best possible outcome. There was a time I participated actively in politics, became a law maker, and thereafter joined the corporate world. Yes I have once in a while interrogated the actions of those in government; sometimes too I have given suggestions on good governance to those in government. I have also criticized them through radio talk programs and newspaper interviews. I teach in Sunday school on Sundays. I work with passion and  drive as God Almighty allows me. You know the demanding nature of the corporate world, it is target driven and I ensure that my numerous engagements are properly timed. Writers are “Righters”they are Patriots and are weighed heavily by the burdens of society, we are the Griots, the Town Criers and we cannot keep still.

What to you is the future of ANA national given the misgivings here and there?

The Association of Nigerian Authors is stronger than ever. We have the best Writers Village in Africa.

Our members are dedicated, every year, they are producing quality literature despite the difficulties in publications and patronage. We are united in our talents, we are Writers first before any offices. During election year as it was this year, there will be Writers who may have other preferences in leadership; that is part of human nature. They are not wrong, but when new leaders emerge, we give them our support and hope that they will produce quality leadership for the common good of all. Where they failed, we vote them out.

Tell us, is there any concrete programme to nurse and nurture young Writers in the Association?

At the 2023 National convention held from 1st November 2023 to 4th November 2023, the first batch of graduates from ANA institute of Creative Writing and Film passed out and they were mainly young Writers. There are two Writers residences funded by Dr Wale Okediran, PAWA, General Secretary and past President of the Association and current ANA President, Dr Dipo Akanbi to help young Writers. The Mbari series made more vibrant by the immediate past President of ANA, Mr Camillus Ukah is also there for young and old Writers to dialogue and hear from those who are masters of the craft. ANA has donated thousands of literary works to many of our secondary schools to catch them young and through Teen Authorship programme started by Mallam Denja Abdullahi(Past President) and the immediate Past President.

Time has come for the Government both Federal and States to partner with the Association of Nigeria Authors to create endowment fund to support literary creativity in Nigeria.

  • ‘My experience with ANA politics’

    ‘My experience with ANA politics’

Hajia Farida Mohammed has always been one of the foremost pillars of the Niger State chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). It was from there she contested and won as the National Vice president of ANA for two terms. She also contested for the post of president during the November 2023 convention in Abuja. In this chat with Edozie Udeze she shares her sentiments, reservations and experiences during that election and its aftermath and what it portends for the future of the association.

You are the immediate past Vice President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). What are some of the experiences that have reshaped your worldview as an author?

It might interest you to know that as the immediate past Vice President of ANA some of the experiences that have reshaped my world view as an author are numerous, convergent and divergent.

I must say that my romance with ANA has really reshaped my world view, because through ANA I have met and made friends with a lot of different people from different socio-cultural backgrounds and intellectual experiences. I met Emeritus Professor Ernest Emenyonu, Professor Femi Osofisan, Professor Olu Obafemi, Professor Akachi Ezeigbo, Professor Idris Amali and his beautiful wife  Professor Halima Amali, Professor Albishak, Professor Remi Raji, Dr  Wale Okediran, Late Dr Salihu Bappa, Hajiya Hafsat Abdulwaheed, Mallam Denja Abdullahi, Professor Vicky Sylvester Mnguember,  Professor Razinat Mohammed, Professor Tanure Ojaide,  Professor Mabel Ovwierhoma, , Professor May Nwoye, Associate Professor Greg Mbajiorgu, Mr Abiola Teslim Layonu , Paul Ugah, Nkwetatang Sampson Nguekie, Terseer  Sam Baki, Omolola Balagbogbo, Sulay Nsubong, Dr Stanley Nduagu Chinedu, Hashimu Musa, Wole Adedoyin, Taiwo  Mathew, Bentex Torlafia, Umar Yogiza, Antony Ebika, Nina Anighoro, Mrs Bukola Ladoja, Freeman Okosun and a host of other fine minds.

These afore-mentioned people have reshaped my mind to see the world differently. Bappa had taught me how to forgive others like the flower that gives fragrance even to the hand that crushes it. Emenyonu taught me the meaning of integrity and Akachi and Layonu exemplify what humility is to me. Through Denja Abdullahi I see the qualities of astute and humble leadership. The men and women on my team during and after the election taught me what camaraderie is. Everyone mentioned above has given me something to take home.

My campaign tour across Nigeria has made me realize how good some of us Nigerians are, and I am truly grateful for the hospitality shown to me.

No university professor could have taught me this much, and I am grateful to my Creator for making me pass through this university of experiences. These take home have reshaped my worldview considerably, and have made me a better and stronger person. Mark you, the botched Enugu election was not as a result of leadership failure of the then president as some quarters hold but as a result of the sybaritic, self-gratification of the opposition to foist their unwanted determination to go against   ANA Constitution and convention by whisking in first timers and associate members to vote. This is a clear contradistinction with the present problem we are habouring as a fall out from failure of Mr Camillus Ukah’s leadership, his undermining the office of the Vice President and other EXCO members, failure to make accounts and, above all, a near abomination of inviting security forces into the hall of election to manhandle members. He even turned my office into a store where he kept onions, soft drinks, water and other sundry stuffs. These kinds of misfits, amounting to social malaise of a deranged society of Area Boys, had never in history been committed by a President of ANA. This tyranny from the helms of affairs also helped me to see the world in a different light that not all that glitters is gold, and that oppression and dictatorial attributes can emerge from people or places you think have finesse.

For the past years ANA has been involved in knotty issues that keep making some members feel aggrieved. In a nutshell, what are some of those issues?

Certainly, Ukah had scores to settle with his EXCO, because of their demand for him to give account of expenditures. He has written an MOU, constituted Board of Trustees for ANA Hotels and Creative Writing Institute without the knowledge of his EXCO, and had made the running of the association a one-man show. To these allegations, the Chairman Board of Trustees had mandated the immediate past President to respond to the charges or allegation, or what have you.

By the mere reason that Professor Ernest Emenyonu, trustee of ANA, requested Ukah to respond to the various allegations levelled against him, he woke up in a start and struck his name off the list of trustees, claiming he was not a resident in Nigeria. Though when Professor Emenyonu was appointed a trustee, he was residing abroad and up to this moment he often shuttles in and out of the country. He made it look as if it was the congress who agreed to remove Professor Emenyonu’s name from the list of trustees, but we all know that that was an arranged move, as he refused to give the microphone to others during the AGM except his used and unsuspecting supporters.

According to him, it is against the laws of the land for a trustee to live abroad and still be a trustee. We have confirmed this not be true as stated by Camillus Ukah.  It is on record that Professor Chinua Achebe founded ANA from abroad and was a trustee of ANA while living abroad till his death in 2013. It is also on record that Professor Kole Omotoso was a trustee living in South Africa from 2015 till his death recently. The question is does the president have such powers to remove the Chairman of BOT? The answer is a capital no, because trusteeship is for life, and they are the owners of the association.  So Mr Camillus Ukah should be informed that he cannot remove our beloved trustees Mrs Mabel Segun and Emenyonu, Chairman of BOT, for they remain the Chairman and member of BOT for life, and there is nothing Ukah and his followers can do about it. And we will make sure that he and his misguided followers do not embarrass a Professor and a gentle man like Professor Ernest Emenyonu and our Mama Mabel Segun.

The last general election in Abuja in November was said to be fraught with irregularities. Briefly, what actually took place?

I started feeling all was not well when I espied the massive deployment of police and DSS personnel armed to the hilt not without teargas. Ordinarily, though ANA elections might have a hitch or wrangling here and there, they tended to be violent-free and would not underscore total militarization of ANA polity.

There was no doubt whatsoever that I had a clear lead, for my popularity ran wild through the rank and file of ANA, from our venerated professors, elders, and the entire members. It is said Ukah claimed I had no capacity when asked why he was not supporting me. But I have proved him wrong, because my campaign team and itinerary were assessed to have won the campaign activities for the elections.  Like the former Nigerian President Jonathan’s meteoric rise from assistant lecturer to deputy governor to governor of Bayelsa State, to Vice President to President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I humbly started as ANA Niger Vice Chairman unopposed, to chairman, National Treasurer, and then Vice President.

In the ANA 2023 election President barred some members in my contingent from Niger and other states from voting, claiming he did not see their images on the database, after they had remitted requisite charges. In the instant of Yobe State, he had claimed that the biography and autobiography were not “creative”. In the instant of Ondo State, there was total disenfranchisement as not a single author was allowed into the hall. In other instances, he held works published on the net were not enough to make one a writer in spite of an argument to the contrary that ANA had launched a website for writers and what would become of it. The President went as far as voiding the former Chairman from Abia State Dr Nduagu Stanley Chinedu whom he knew was my staunch supporter and a candidate for the post of National PRO South. But my relationship with some of the writers in Abia spans close to two decades and goes beyond ANA connections. That was what he did not know. Initially the current chairman of Oyo, Enugu and Nassarawa chapters were not allowed in. It is conventional for foreign writers to come visiting, as observers and learning from us. In the ANA elections 2023, Ukah at the gate personally barred foreign writers from entering the venue. In fact, a Cameroonian writer, Nkwetatang Sampson Nguekie, who had been a regular attendee of ANA conventions without a single break since 2019 was refused entry and courtesy of our armed Department of State Security (DSS) men. Does this tell well of our image? This same person was even accommodated alongside other special guests at the 2020 convention in Ilorin!

Some minutes to the commencement of the election, more policemen were drafted to the venue. He even warned a baffled congress of writers that they would not find it interesting if he invited the armed policemen into the hall. In fact, he went on to invite armed personnel from the Department of State Security (DSS) into the hall. It is clear naiveté to contemplate all the line up from President to Ex-officio on Ukah’s side emerged victorious and not a single failed. Yet it is on record that Ukah had said publicly (in the face of his EXCO and others) that not a single person from his EXCO whom he felt antagonistic would succeed him and he would do all within his powers, to ensure that none of the members of his EXCO made it back.

So a day to the election, he constituted a committee. This committee is constitutive of two state chapters serving chairmen, a candidate from the opposition, a professor and a few.

To cut matters short, the Accredited No of Voters was 209. For the office of President, after the voting exercise, the total number of votes cast was 225:There were cases of multiple ballot papers doled out to voters, and they unwillingly issued such to some of our voters who honestly returned them to sham electoral officials who was handpicked. But the so-called handpicked electoral committee chairman dismissed it as human.

It is also appalling to note that the so-called electoral committee deliberately did not supervise the voting process which gave room to over voting on the part of the opponent camp who had been deliberately given excess ballot papers. It was the working of Providence that such excess ballot papers fell into the hands of a few others, hence our awareness of it.

Mark you, during the staged AGM, there was actually no Treasurer’s Report, no Auditor’s Report, and handover Report by the President, and no dissolution of the EXCO. It was a total failure of leadership, a fiasco.

You were one of those who contested for the presidency of ANA to succeed the outgone president. Tell us how you feel about your loss and the conduct of the election itself?

I must correct that perception: I did not lose; I was massively rigged out.In spite of all odds, we are thankful to our Creator that we did not follow Ukah’s secret scripts. My co-aspirant in my camp and my supporters are mature and were able to suppress their emotions but I am not sure they will be able to suppress angst of the pen. Grapevine has it that it was his greatest wish to provoke my own camp to cause unrest so that he could continue with power. His greatest regret—- I am sure— is that that did not materialise. In spite of the stolen mandate I am happy that someone else is there and not him.

You helped to nurture the Niger State chapter of ANA. What is the level of the development of the association in the state now?

Well, my brother, you are a journalist and you are well-informed. There was a peaceful election which marks a transition from a caretaker status. The extant chairman Sulay is a person very close to me, a lawyer besides being a writer. He is an able hand and I guess that’s why he was disenfranchised and not allowed into the hall. He will carry everybody along, this I am sure.

In a way of summary, what do you think is usually wrong with the way ANA runs its elections? Is there going to be another splinter of ANA based on the rancour of the last convention? Are we likely going to have the Enugu scenario replicated?

No, no, no, there is no rancour whatsoever. What we are now talking about here is a crass failure of leadership (that has never happened before in ANA) of the outgoing president, who undermined due process of an election.

  • ANA condemns killings in Taraba, Zamfara, others

The writer’s group, Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), has  condemned the killings in Benue, Taraba, Zamfara, Kaduna states, the Northcentral and the Southsouth geopolitical zones.

Describing the nefarious acts as “callous” and crimes against the state, ANA said the  victims were mainly women and children, the elderly and the weak.

The group called on the government to investigate these killings, and ensure that the perpetrators faced the law, saying this would not only serve as a deterrent to others.

“ANA enjoins the security agencies to be up to date with the task and responsibilities associated with the protection of lives and properties in an increasingly challenging human environment. The association condemns and cautions against any unnecessary politicisation and ethnicisation of the country and enjoins political players at all levels to approach their activities (in view of the build-up to the 2019 elections) with utmost respect to the interest of the country and especially the sanctity of human life above all else,” it stated.

The group made the call during its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Grange Hill Hotel in Mpape, Federal Capital Territory.

In the wake of brutal killings across the country, the group urged writers to use their writings to promote peace, harmony and mutual coexistence.

Writers were urged to “continue to employ the instrumentality of their writings and creative endowments to promote peace, harmony and mutual coexistence in the country in line with our founding philosophy of supporting Nigeria’s emergence as an egalitarian society, safe for all and vibrantly accommodating of others opinions and noble pursuits”.

At the NEC meetings, the group’s leadership restated its commitment to “purposeful administration”, pursuit and protection of the interest of all creative writers in the country in a continuing effort towards upholding the objectives, vision and mission of the association as outlined in its Constitution”.

The Denja Abdullahi-led executive also reiterated its commitment to the development of the ANA Land at Mpape into a modern Writers Village and creative hub, which it said was witnessing progress in the form of the building; and completion of a mini-national secretariat and construction on various outlined facilities earmarked for the Mamman Vatsa Writers’ Village shall be sustained.

The meeting also focused on the 37th International Annual Convention of the association, which has been scheduled for October 25 to 28. It would have as  theme: Literature: Megacities and mega-narratives.

After exhaustive deliberations, it came up with a communique  signed by ANA president, Mallam Abdullahi, and ANA General Secretary, Dr. Ofonime Inyang, which also states, among other issues, that creative writing and literary production should begin to receive more attention from both the public and private sectors of the economy. In it, the group notes that the present exclusion of the literary sector from the government’s discourse and support projections for the creative industry, while calling for urgent redress on this to enable a wholesome development of the creative industry.

“We are working seriously with these organisations to checkmate piracy alongside with other stakeholders,’’ the ANA president said.

Denja said that the NCC already had a draft bill before the National Assembly waiting to be passed.

“Nigeria Copyright Commission already has a draft bill which is sealed and good, and we are collaborating on it.

“They have just amended the copyright bill and we contributed to the amendment.

“It will soon be passed by the National Assembly and when that it is signed into law, the issue of piracy will also be addressed completely,’’ he said.

The ANA president said that the association would focus on carrying out contemporary criticism of new literature in circulation in 2018.

“We discover that there is a dearth of criticism of new writings that are coming up, so we want to divert attention to new literature that are springing up here and there.

“This will form major parts of our focus in 2018,’’ Denja said.

They were received at the ANA state secretariat at 34, former Alhaji Dash Building, Ankpa Road, Makurdi by members of the Local Organising Committee convention’s LOC.

Chairman of the LOC, Prof Idris Amali and his vice,Prof Jerry Agada along with the Secretary,Dr.Raymond Anumve,Otse Otokpa, Dr.Tartule Tijah, Abo Abgochenu, the state chairman of ANA, Mr.Charles Iornumbe and Mrs. Dorcas Otalu, among others were present at the secretariat.

The delegation came few days after the LOC met with Bebbbbbnue State Governor Samuel Ortom who approved funds for the event.

Receiving Abdullahi and his team Amali, said the visit would help  strengthen the commitment of members towards planning for a successful convention.

Amali said the LOC had secured venues for activities, hotels and printed some pre-convention materials, among others.

Amal`i, of the Federal University Lafia, and Agada thanked Ortom for approving funds for the hosting of the convention.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and ICT,Mr.Tahav Agerzua reaffirmed his boss’ commitment to ANA, urging members to continue to develop the knowledge base of the state as the world could always survive through ideas.

The national officials met with the LOC members to consider arrangements for the event.

They also toured facilities and hotels. The team also visited the JS Tarka Foundation where the arrival cocktail and  convention play are expected to hold.

The team equally visited the auditorium of the College of Health Science, Benue State University, Makurdi to assess the venue for the convention  grand opening ceremony.

The tour was rounded off with a visit to the Royal Choice Inn,the proposed venue for registration of delegates where the 1000 capacity hall proposed for the dinner and award night was also assessed.

Addressing members of the LOC at the Presidential Wing of the inn, Abdullahi expressed satisfaction with the facilities proposed for the convention.

He stated that in view of the difficult times,it would be better to plan the convention within the means of available resources in order not incur over bloated expenses.

He advised ANA members against late registration, pointing out that those in the habit of attending conventions and registering on the spot would be doing so this year at their own peril.

“This year is an election year, those coming for the convention must get registered on time as adequate preparations would be made for them, and those in the habit of coming for conventions to gatecrash, would suffer the consequences of their action”Mallam Denja noted.

He thanked the Benue State Government for approving funds to support the Association to host a successful convention and expressed hope that the funds would be released early to enable the LOC put everything in place before the event.

“It is one thing to approve funds,it is another to ensure their earlier release,we have had situations whereby funds are released a day to our convention which adversely affected planning. But with the commitment shown by your State Governor,we are optimistic that he will release the funds on time so that the best convention ever would take place in Benue”Denja maintained.

He advised members of the LOC to be in constant touch with the national secretariat with the view to strengthening planning until the event is over, stressing that the committee on its part, deserved commendation for doing a wonderful job, urging members to keep the tempo.

Earlier while receiving the national officials, Amali assured them of a unique convention in Benue next month, stating that the committee under him cannot afford to fail in that regard.
