  • Why APC must get it right in Anambra

Why APC must get it right in Anambra

    • By Umunnakwe Onoh

As the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares for the decisive April 5 primary in Anambra State, one truth stands clear: the stakes have never been higher.

For the party and Anambra, this election is not just another contest — it is an opportunity to rewrite the political narrative of the Southeast, consolidate the progressive ideals heralded by President Bola Tinubu, and prove that the APC is ready to govern with credibility and competence in regions where it once struggled.

The Anambra governorship election in November 2025 is not an ordinary poll. It is the last off-cycle gubernatorial election before the 2027 general election.

It is the litmus test of APC’s growth in the Southeast and a referendum on the party’s ability to present viable, unifying leadership beyond its traditional base.

This is why the APC must field its strongest, most acceptable, and most strategic candidate. That candidate is Valentine Ozigbo.

It’s true that all the aspirants have the best interests of Anambra state but in my consideration of what is the best interest of my party, the APC, Val Ozigbo meets my admiration.

Speculations have been rife that Ozigbo is a mole for Mr. Obi of the Labour Party, but I disagree with the allegation. It’s more like suggesting If there are moles for Mr. Obi, they are better found in the states that Mr. Obi won during the 2023 election.

Ozigbo’s anticipated victory in the November Anambra governorship election cannot guarantee significant votes for Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.

As much as I hold H.E. Gov. C.C. Soludo in very high regard, sadly, he is not a member of my political party, the APC, and in politics, loyalty to the party comes first.

Now that all eyes are on the APC gubernatorial ticket for the Anambra state election, Val Ozigbo has had memberships of the PDP, LP, and now he is in the APC.

He knows the terrain, ran for the elections, and I cannot say much for the rest of his rivals in the APC.

For those unfamiliar with Ozigbo’s remarkable journey, he is a man who rose from humble beginnings in Amesi, Aguata Local Government Area, to become a distinguished corporate leader, a philanthropist, and a unifier.

From excelling as the best-graduating student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to leading one of Nigeria’s most iconic corporations, Transcorp Plc, Ozigbo’s story is one of brilliance, tenacity, and integrity.

As Managing Director of Transcorp Hilton Abuja, he oversaw a $100 million renovation that transformed the hotel into Africa’s leading business destination.

As President and Group CEO of Transcorp Plc, he led a conglomerate with interests in hospitality, power, and energy, championing innovation and corporate excellence.

But more importantly, he has consistently translated personal success into public service through philanthropy, mentorship, and community development.

Ozigbo’s foray into politics in 2020 was no accident. It was a deliberate decision to leave the corporate boardroom and step into the public square—to answer a higher call of service.

In 2021, running under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ozigbo emerged as a formidable contender, coming a close second despite running against the combined might of the federal and state governments, entrenched political structures, and financial odds. Since then, he has remained at the centre of Anambra’s political discourse.

He played a crucial leadership role in the Obidient Movement of 2023, galvanising the youth and the middle-class electorate across the southeast.

His recent decision to join the APC has opened a new chapter—bringing with him not only his formidable political structure but also the credibility and goodwill he commands across political divides.

In a state where zoning, religious alignment, and public acceptability are decisive factors, Ozigbo scores highest among all APC aspirants.

According to a confidential evaluation document by the APC, he ranks first, scoring 74 per cent in key metrics including zoning, religious support, and public popularity—outperforming the incumbent governor, Charles Soludo, in recent grassroots polls.

Ozigbo is not a transactional politician. He is a bridge-builder. His campaign is not about party supremacy—it is about people-centred leadership.

He has built relationships across the PDP, Labour Party, APGA, and civil society. His defection to APC has created a rallying point that could unify previously fragmented political interests in Anambra. If APC is serious about delivering a historic victory in the South East, it must embrace this unifier.

Beyond numbers and strategy, Ozigbo is a leader of ideas. His vision for Anambra is well-documented—a clear economic plan anchored on the digital economy, youth empowerment, security, and infrastructure.

His investments in young people speak volumes: through the VCO Foundation, he has committed N400 million in partnership with Decagon Institute to sponsor 100 Anambra youths in software engineering, providing a pathway out of unemployment and poverty.

Critically, Ozigbo possesses something his rivals lack—an expansive grassroots movement and the ability to transcend party lines.

In the 2021 election, he outperformed APC’s own candidate. Today, he has brought to the APC not only his capacity but also the goodwill of thousands who believe in his brand of leadership.

His campaign is self-funded, removing the burden of financial dependency from the party. His cosmopolitan corporate background, vast diaspora network, and clean political record set him apart in a field often riddled with godfatherism and mediocrity.

As APC looks towards November, the party must decide whether it wants a candidate who can win the primary—or a candidate who can win the election. The difference matters.

The people of Anambra are yearning for a new kind of leadership—one that transcends slogans and symbols and delivers results.

Valentine Ozigbo embodies that aspiration. For APC, he is not only the safest bet; he is the smartest one.

Mr. President, Aswaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu believes in the harvest of talents, not about lobbying or money. Therefore, now is the time for our party to help the President harvest one of the talents so that the APC can avert the crisis as it is being experienced in the PDP presently.

The road to Anambra’s redemption begins with the right choice on April 5. The APC has a rare chance to make history. That chance is Valentine Ozigbo.

  • Anambra South Senatorial rerun: Between Azuka Okwuosa and others

Anambra South Senatorial rerun: Between Azuka Okwuosa and others

In our nation’s legislative politics, where representation has more often than not fallen short of expectations, with legislators earning notoriety for collecting unbelievable wages and other shenanigans than for mastery of the legislative rules, oratory and the exhibition of sheer intellect as witnessed within the First, Second and  part of the Fourth Republics, particularly when Dr. Chuba Okadigbo was Senate President.

My home state of Anambra has had it’s fair share of such representatives and the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah did leave a vacuum in the Senate. His larger than life image in the Senate and the politics of Anambra somewhat towers above a number of pretenders who are presently  angling to fill such big shoes Ebubechukwuzo left behind. However,  one name within the litany of aspirants readily stands out, a name that has consistently emerged as a beacon of hope and proven leadership, that name is Azuka Okwuosa, one time Local Government Chairman Nnewi Local Government, ( When it had Nnewi North, South and Ekwusigo in one entity), one time former Commissioner in Anambra and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress,  who has remained loyal to the party and contributed innumerably to it.

As the race for Anambra South senatorial district intensifies, a critical examination of the candidates reveals that Okwuosa stands head and shoulders above the competition, offering a unique blend of administrative experience, party loyalty, and genuine grassroots connection that positions him as the ideal representative for the people of Anambra South.

Azuka Okwuosa’s journey in public service began with his exemplary tenure as a Local Government Chairman. During this period, he demonstrated exceptional administrative acumen, transforming local governance from a mere bureaucratic exercise into a vehicle for community development. His administration was marked by several landmark achievements that continue to resonate with the people even to today.

Under Okwuosa’s leadership, the local government witnessed unprecedented infrastructure development. Roads that had been neglected for decades were rehabilitated, providing essential connectivity between communities and markets. Water projects that brought clean, potable water to previously underserved areas were implemented. Schools were renovated and equipped with modern learning tools, creating conducive environments for education.

Perhaps most significantly, Okwuosa introduced a participatory governance model that involved community members in decision-making processes. This approach ensured that development initiatives were aligned with the actual needs of the people rather than imposed from above. The result was a remarkable improvement in the quality of life for residents and a renewed faith in governance.

His financial management style was equally impressive. In a system often plagued by misappropriation, Okwuosa instituted transparent financial practices that maximized the impact of available resources. Every naira was accounted for, and the benefits were evident in the quality of projects delivered. This fiscal responsibility earned him widespread respect and established him as a leader who could be trusted with public resources.

Okwuosa’s appointment as a commissioner further expanded his administrative portfolio and provided him with invaluable experience in state-level governance. In this capacity, he demonstrated exceptional policy formulation and implementation skills that directly impacted the lives of Anambra citizens.

As commissioner, Okwuosa championed innovative approaches to persistent challenges. As Commissioner for Works and Transport, Azuka attempted to meet the challenges of Anambra’s decrepit infrastructure but the politics then prevailed over common sense and by 2001, he resigned from office rather than remain in power for power sake. Such action was to absolve him in the future as being amongst those who contributed by either acts of commission or omission to the floundering of Anambra then.

Even with the dismal performance of the Mbadinuju administration, Okwuosa’s performance in that administration was characterized by meticulous attention to detail, strategic thinking, and a results-oriented approach. He consistently exceeded targets and established new standards of excellence in public service. The networks and relationships he built during this period continue to serve as valuable assets in his political journey, providing him with access to key stakeholders across various sectors.

His tenure as commissioner also gave him a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of governance, including the legislative processes that are critical for effective senatorial representation. This experience has equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of national politics and deliver tangible benefits to his constituents.

In Nigerian politics, where party-hopping has become commonplace, Azuka Okwuosa stands out for his unwavering loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This steadfastness is not merely a matter of political convenience but a reflection of his alignment with the party’s progressive ideals and vision for national development.

Okwuosa has been a consistent advocate for the APC’s policies and programs, even during challenging periods when such advocacy was politically costly. His commitment has earned him the respect of party leadership at both state and national levels, positioning him as a trusted representative of the party’s interests and values.

This loyalty translates to practical advantages for the people of Anambra South. As a senator representing the ruling party, Okwuosa would have direct access to federal resources and influence that could be leveraged for the benefit of his constituents. His established relationships within the party would facilitate smoother collaboration with federal agencies and ministries, ensuring that Anambra South receives its fair share of national development initiatives.

Furthermore, his consistent party membership reflects a stability of character and conviction that is essential for effective representation. Unlike political opportunists who switch allegiances based on convenience, Okwuosa offers a predictable and principled approach to governance that voters can rely on.

Perhaps Okwuosa’s most significant advantage in the senatorial race is his authentic connection with the grassroots. Unlike politicians who only appear in communities during election seasons, Okwuosa has maintained a consistent presence among the people, understanding their challenges, celebrating their successes, and advocating for their interests.

This connection is evident in the extensive network of supporters he has cultivated across Anambra South. From traditional leaders to market women, youth groups to professional associations, Okwuosa enjoys widespread support that cuts across demographic and social lines. This following is not based on monetary inducements or empty promises but on a track record of genuine service and empathy.

His approach to community engagement has always been inclusive and respectful. He listens to the concerns of constituents, values their input, and incorporates their perspectives into his vision for development. This participatory approach has created a sense of ownership among his supporters, transforming them from passive voters into active stakeholders in his political journey.

The breadth and depth of his grassroots support give him a significant electoral advantage over potential opponents. While others might rely on financial muscle or external influence, Okwuosa’s campaign is powered by the authentic voices of the people he seeks to represent – a force that has repeatedly proven more powerful than money or connections in Nigerian politics.

Okwuosa’s aspiration is not merely about securing political office; it represents a comprehensive vision for transforming Anambra South into a model of development and prosperity. His agenda focuses on addressing the core challenges facing the region while leveraging its unique strengths and opportunities.

His legislative priorities include attracting federal infrastructure projects to improve connectivity and stimulate economic growth, advocating for policies that support small and medium enterprises which form the backbone of the local economy, and securing investments in education and healthcare to enhance human capital development.

He also plans to champion environmental protection initiatives, particularly addressing erosion which has devastated many communities in Anambra South, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices to ensure food security and create rural employment opportunities.

As the electorate of Anambra South evaluates their options for senatorial representation, Azuka Okwuosa emerges as the candidate who offers the most comprehensive package of experience, integrity, connection, and vision. His trajectory from Local Government Chairman to commissioner has equipped him with the administrative knowledge essential for effective representation. His loyalty to the APC provides strategic advantages for accessing federal resources and influence. His grassroots connection ensures that he truly understands and represents the interests of his constituents.

In a political environment often characterized by unfulfilled promises and disappointing representation, Okwuosa offers a refreshing alternative – a candidate with a proven track record of performance, a demonstrated commitment to service, and an authentic connection with the people. For Anambra South, the choice is clear: Azuka Okwuosa represents the best path to effective representation and transformative development.

“The increasing use of mobile phones by students during school hours has become a serious distraction to their studies.

“I am authorising principals and teachers to seize phones from students who come to school with them, so that we can ensure that students concentrate on their academic work without interference of phones.

A viral video circulating on social media on Saturday captured the Governor confronting an unidentified roadside preacher at a market, instructing him to stop disrupting traders with his preaching.

Ahead of the April 5, 2025, primary election for its Anambra State governorship candidate, the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday commenced the screening of seven aspirants vying for the party’s ticket.

The exercise followed the inauguration of the screening committee by APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The committee is led by former Katsina State Governor, Ibrahim Shema.

The two-day screening, taking place at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, will conclude today (Saturday).

The seven aspirants who obtained nomination forms are Hon. Chukuma Michael Umeoji, Prof. Obiora Francis Okonkwo, Nicholas Chukwujeku Ukachukwu, Sir Paul Chukwuma, Johnbosco Obinna Onunkwo, Valentine Ozigbo, and Edozie Madu.

Ganduje urged the Shema-led committee to ensure a fair process to prevent post-primary litigations.

Tasking the committee, Ganduje said, “We have confidence in you to do justice in what you are assigned to do. Ensure that you don’t leave some gaps to make us face some litigations either within the party or outside the party.”

Emerging from the screening exercise, one of the aspirants and former APC National Auditor, Sir Paul Chukwuma told newsmen that he remain the best candidate to fly the flag of the party.

Applauding the screening process, Chukwuma said the exercise is a routine to ensure that only qualified aspirants were selected to fly the party’s flag in the election.

“I came prepared for the screening and I am happy it went well. I am ready for the primary and also hopeful to be elected. I’m also convinced that the APC will Anambra election”.

Reacting to some aspirants who recently defected to APC and are in the race, Chukwuma said; “I feel great that the APC has a commendable practice of people from other parties joining us. The outcome of people coming in is a product of what we started when I was a member of the National Working Committee (NWC).

“I’m happy that my brothers from other parties are identifying with the APC. We should allow anybody who feels he is qualified to contest to do so. I want them to join us to clean Anambra and return the state to the people.

Chukwuma equally said he was happy with the decision of the party to adopt the indirect primaries option.

“I am very comfortable with either the direct or indirect primaries, or any other option for that matter. I have worked very hard to develop the party and I am happy our people are ready to support me.

  • Soludo urges increased investment in Anambra, presents scorecard

Soludo urges increased investment in Anambra, presents scorecard

Anambra state governor, Professor Charles Soludo, has called for increased investments from indigenes of the state living in Lagos.

Soludo, who spoke over the weekend while launching the ‘Homeland Consciousness’ initiative, said his government has done so much and is still counting on creating a conducive environment for investments in the state.

The governor, who noted that indigenes of Anambra in Lagos have not done well in comparison with those in other sprawling states, said the time had come for Anambrians in Lagos to come together and join his government to make the state an investment haven for both local and foreign investors.

The event put together by the Anambra Lagos Liaison Office attracted a large turnout of the state’s indigents.

The governor said, “We need to channel our resources and investments back to our homeland to replicate some of our business ideas elsewhere.”

According to him, this will not only give them a sense of pride but also make the state a much sought-after investment destination by non-indigenes and foreigners.

He urged well-meaning indigenes of Anambra in Lagos to come together to shape the future for a greater Anambra state, adding, “We need to build business hubs and create boomtowns in our homeland, and possibly, stimulate the influx of foreign capital.”

The Anambra Homeland Consciousness initiative is designed to strengthen the bond between the indigenes of the state, harness their collective resources, and create pathways for sustainable development in Anambra State.

He allayed fears that the campaign was aimed at attracting people’s investments back to their home state, saying that the Homeland Consciousness initiative “is a message to our people saying whatever you are doing, think home. We are not saying take everything you have in Lagos or elsewhere home. No!”

Reeling out his scorecard for the last three years of his administration, Soludo said his administration has enhanced the state through the delivery of several infrastructure projects.

The project, he said, is the award and flag off of 700 kilometres of roads in 21 local government areas of the state, with 400 kilometres set for commissioning by the third anniversary just as another 400 kilometres of roads have been rehabilitated through the zero pothole initiative.

Also, large-scale erosion control projects are addressing major challenges at critical locations like Ebenator, Nnobi, Ezi-Oko, Awka (behind  Ekwueme Square), Onitsha-Owerri Road in the Oba axis, near Rojenny Hotel, while  Onitsha-Owerri Road (Ozubulu axis ) is currently in progress.

Soludo added that flyover bridge construction at the Ekwuloba inter-section of two Federal Highways is underway, showcasing commitment to improved connectivity, while the dual carriage ways at the Ekwuloba-Agulu-Uga and Agulu-Nnobi-Nnewi are seriously under construction to give fast connectivity to different parts of the state.

Others include the completion of abandoned projects, renovation of existing public buildings, new urban development initiatives, renewable energy solutions, expansion of electricity infrastructure, and water sector transformation.

The governor said there are plans to build an industrial park, a new Onitsha, Silicon Valley, Marriott Hotel, Awka 2.0.

On security, Soludo said his government was on top of the game and has been able to check insecurity throughout the state.

According to him, the efforts of the exploits of Agunechemba have been paying off, and he pledged to do more by deploying technology to rid the state of bad boys, assuring that every other utility to encourage investment in the state is being put in place.

He said the Homeland Security Law 2025, which he signed into law recently, provides a framework for community/citizens’ ownership and participation in sustainable security and social re-engineering.

He added that Operation Udo Ga-Achi is a special intervention force that complements regular policing and is designed to upscale intelligence gathering, reward whistleblowers, enhance rapid response, and urgently root out criminals from every camp in Anambra State.

The governor noted that the security challenges facing the state are complex and hydra-headed, requiring a comprehensive and sustainable response, emphasising that the state government is determined to fight criminality and ensure that Anambra State becomes the safest state in Nigeria.

He said that the homeland security law, which has aided the arrest of native doctors preparing charms for suspected kidnappers, was not targeted at traditional religious practitioners.

According to him, traditional religion is an essential component of Igbo traditional religion and culture.

The new law was designed to combat crime and criminality committed by quacks and evil native doctors, particularly those who pervert and alter the core values of the Igbo society, those who promote and teach the acquisition of wealth without work, and those who deceive the younger generation and unwary members of society.

He condemned native doctors in the state who misled the youth on wealth without work.

He said his government has built four new general hospitals, renovated several others, and employed more medical personnel.

On education, he said the state was leading many states, as his administration had employed more teachers, ending the era of schools without teachers.

“Our homeland is not just a place – it is our heritage, our pride and pride and the foundation upon which we must build a prosperous future.”

“We need to build business hubs and create boom towns in our homeland, and possibly, stimulate the influx of foreign capitals.”
