    Erosion nightmare in Anambra

The threat of erosion in the Southeast, unattended to for decades, gets worse in Anambra State, reports NWANOSIKE ONU

Life, property and virtually everything the people cherish are in danger in a community in Anambra State. Roads are threatened as much as bridges, farmlands and homes. The people of Ezira in Orumba South Local Government Area hardly sleep as a result of erosion.

Many communities in the Southeast and Southsouth have been sacked by this monster, while governments at different levels have done pretty little to salvage the situation.

Anambra was some years ago declared the worst erosion-hit state by the World Bank with over 1,000 gullies.

Some of the affected communities are Agulu, Nnewi, Nanka, Ekwulobia, Onitsha North, Awka North and South, Oko, Ozubulu, Isuofia and Igboukwu, among others.

Now, Ezira, an agrarian community made up of three villages namely, Ubaha, Obotu and Umuohia-Oki has joined the fray.

The community produces yam, cassava, beans, plantains, okra and vegetables in large quantities but lacks access roads to evacuate them to major cities because of the erosion challenge.

One of the community roads, a 7km stretch spanning Eke-Ezira Market, Uga and Ekwulobia through Onne, Agbudu, Umuchu and Achina communities, has been cut off.

The two major bridges of Aghomili and Omumu that link those areas have equally collapsed.

The residents of this sleepy community are in agony, saying they have been abandoned by  government.

Some help has come. A philanthropist in the state, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo gave out N500,000 to the Ezira people, a gesture he described as his own widow’s mite.

The chairman of Ubaha Ezira, Mr. Jude Umunna told The Nation that the community had sent save our soul (SOS) calls to the state government without any response so far.

He commended Ezeemo for the cash donation to the community, adding that the community had already started some palliative work on one of their roads with their meager resources to make it passable.

Umunna said, “It’s now the rainy season and tropical rains will continue to dump on the road till September or October, digging more ditches and causing more harm to the community.”

“Our greatest regret is that our governor flagged off the road in March last year during the House of Assembly election.

“He brought in caterpillars and bulldozers which motivated our people to vote massively for his party, APGA, but surprisingly, he removed those machines two days after the election till today.

“Now, look at the problem we are facing to evacuate our farm produce and Ezira is one of the food baskets of the state.

“We are therefore calling on the government at all levels to assist us as Ezeemo, an individual, cannot do it alone; let government come to our aid.”

Another community leader, Ichie Christopher Mbah regretted that the bad condition of the area has stopped people in the cities and other communities from coming to Ezira to buy farm produce.

“Hunger is really dealing with us,” he said. “We cannot sell our produce to buy others that we do not produce; if not for the intervention of Ezeemo, I do not know what our fate would have been.”

Also, Mrs. Nwano Rosaline and Susan Okeke, while commending Ezeemo, said access road and palliative measures in controlling the gully erosion are the basic needs of the community.

On the importance of the road, Mr. Linus Okeke, reminded Governor Willie Obiano of his agricultural programme for the state, which he said topped his four pillars of development.

He wondered how it would be realized with the condition of such roads in most of the rural communities said to be the food baskets of the state.

According to him, “There is no incident of crime and criminality in Ezira and its environs because we are all farmers and our youths are serious with agriculture but lack of access roads to evacuate these products may make them lazy and so may resort to crime and that is why we are calling on the governor to come and help us”

Speaking with the reporter, Ezeemo said he was motivated to make the donation because that road led to his primary school when he was growing up, and also to the local market where his late mother went to buy food items.

He said, “So when I asked after the market, I was told that erosion had eaten off the road. I want to bring back the old memories of the area and again, I equally have a farmland that is about 2,900 plots in Ezira and Umuomaku communities.”

    Anambra senator dumps PDP

The senator representing Anambra North, Emmanuel Obiajulu Anosike, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Anosike, who announced his defection in a letter, dated April 11 to PDP Chairman Ali Modu Sheriff, claimed that the events in the party showed that the philosophy of its founding fathers had been jettisoned for personal aggrandisement of a few people.

The letter reads: “The eventual emergence of the party’s flag bearer, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, in spite discernible underhand, was condoned in the belief that whatever imperfections being meted shall find further amelioration and tinkering in the course of the drive to acquire and relish national rebirth  and rejuvenation. Most of us green horns held on to this philosophy, envisioning the greater tomorrow.

“But we soon discovered to our utter amazement that the intrigues, horse-trading, trade-offs, betrayals, exploitations and extortions gradually arrived to become the beacons and landmarks of our great expectations. In time, these bourgeoning lapses, shortcomings, intrigues and aberrations became repetitive in pattern and frequently, turning into the life and character of the party and ultimately its destiny.”

Anosike added: “It must be conceded that the party’s apparatchik at the national level had come to view party politics and intrigues as vintage harvest points of sort in terms of loyalty trading, finances and prerequisites of office.

“These contours of aberration took bold imprints as the honey pot ascriptions in matters that relate to Anambra State particularly and closely knit camaraderie prevail, with it a solid mechanism of oiled party administration, dynamics, and maturation.

“The question then begs: How have we fared? It serves no purpose now refreshing your memories of the ugly wrestling and castrations that stymied the Chinwoke Mbadinuju administration. In all intent and purposes, it was the first open display of undermining general over-riding interests with scornful disdain.

“We went through the half-life of Dr. Chris Ngige’s administration on a ride with the utmost heinous and devious political machinery hinged on suffocation and apparent brigandage invented or contrived by man. A governor was kidnapped, kept incommunicado, forced to pen a resignation with the active participation of a serving Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG).

The state commandant of the agency, Mr. Godwin Omoreigie, made this known Tuesday in Awka, while speaking with reporters.

He said that the arrest followed series of complaints by officials of the Federal Ministry of Solid Development, Abuja and a licensed company, Konaza Oil and Gas limited about the illegal mining.

According to him, “The activities of illegal miners was becoming rampant in the state”

“We received complaints from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development that a staff was beaten up by some illegal miners along the riverside in Onitsha when he enquired into their activity.

“The arrest is to deter other unlicensed miners from excavating sands, the organization has launched a special operation to arrest defaulters across the state,” Omoreigie said.

However, he refused to give out the names of the suspects, while explaining that investigations were still ongoing to arrest more culprits.

He noted that the offence of illegal mining and encroachment attracts 20 million naira fine or eight years jail term if found culpable by the courts.

He also said that the organization achieved a feat with the seizure of badge loaded with 100 barrels of crude oil along the Onitsha Riverine area in September, 2015.

Anambra Judge orders DSS to appear in court

A judge in an Anambra State High Court, Justice R.O Onunkwo, has ordered the Department of State Service (DSS) to appear before him or be sentenced in absence.

The DSS was arraigned before Justice Onunkwo for allegedly attacking the Anambra coordinator of the Muhammadu Buhari Presidential campaign in 2007, Chief Ifeanyichukwu Nwokoye.

The court said after the period granted to the DSS to appear before it expired, it was left with no other option than to enter judgment in default against the security outfit.

The dates ordered for the hearing notice were March 15, April 5 and 20, May 17, 19, 24 and 26.

The judge said on March 15, the DSS would be allowed to cross examine the witnesses who yesterday gave their evidence.

The Court, on March 7, summoned the DSS to appear before it on March 10 which the security outfit did not honour.

When the matter came up on March 7, counsel to the DSS, Mr. S.T Oneh, announced his discontinuance with matter. “I used to appear for the respondents (DSS) in this matter but the respondents have disengaged my service. I, hereby, notify the court that I no longer represent them.”

But in a resumed hearing yesterday, the DSS did not put up appearance, a situation that caused the Judge to give a leave of the court to the applicant’s lawyer, Prof Ilochi Okafor (SAN) to proceed with his motion to continue with the case in the absence of DSS.

IPMAN threatens to shut down operations in Enugu, Anambra

The Enugu Zone of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association (IPMAN) has threatened to shut down operations in Anambra and Enugu over alleged harassment by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR).

Its Chairman, Chief Ikechukwu Nwankwo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka that the planned showdown was to protest the incessant harassment of the members by the officials of the DPR.

The chairman accused NNPC officials of sabotage, saying they were in the habit of preventing marketers from procuring products at the approved depot prices.

He called on the Federal Government to “probe, expose and punish the unpatriotic elements in the organisation.

“We have been meeting on this issue of selling at the approved price; DPR officials have been going to our members with security agencies to harass them, charging them for one offence or the other.

“Anambra and Enugu are the worst hit and we shutdown our stations for them this week so that they can service the people as they wish.

“NNPC does not supply us products, so why will they send DPR to come and be chasing us around?

“Let them sell to us at the normal N77 cost price, then they will not need to enforce anything,” he said.

Nwankwo called on Anambra and Enugu state governments to liaise with the NNPC and ensure that the right quotas to the states were supplied as the residents were suffering.

He also opined that if the depot in Enugu, which had broken down for more than 11 years, was repaired, it would reduce the pressure of supply to the zone.

Efforts to reach Ms Ngozi Okoye, the Special Adviser to Governor Willie Obiano on Oil and Gas, were not successful as she was out of the office and calls to her phone were not picked.

In his reaction, the Operations Manager at the Enugu office of the DPR, Mr Ahmed Gwaran, said the agency was aware of the threat.

Gwaran said the DPR and the petroleum products distribution stakeholders in the zone comprising Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu states had met to forestall the action which would have serious economic consequences on the lives of the people.

He said, however, that the enforcement was a policy issue which would not be compromised, adding that the government price was sacrosanct and that the meeting would help to smoothen rough edges.

The marketers have always sold above the current approved N86.50 pump price in Anambra as the product sells for between N120 and N130 per litre.

Anambra PDP warns INEC against recognising candidates other than those from Oguebego exco

The Ejike Oguebego-led state Executive of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against recognising candidates contained in the list of nominated candidates sent to it by interests other than his executive.

The Supreme Court recently affirmed the authenticity of the Ejike Oguebego leadership of the PDP in Anambra and ordered the director INEC to deal with it in all cases.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had also in the case marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/854/2015 restrained INEC from accepting list of nominated candidates from other source except from the Oguebego-led executive.

Bothered that INEC was yet to give effect, Ejike Oguebego (Chairman) and Chuks Okoye (legal adviser), acting for themselves and members of the Executive of the PDP in Anambra State have issued Form 48 against INEC before the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Form 48 is a” notice of consequences of disobedience to court orders,” issued on a party who is reluctant or unwilling to obey a subsisting order of a court.

A party who issues Form 48 on a perceived erring party will proceed to issue Form 49 (request for order of committal against an erring party), commencing contempt proceedings against the erring party.

The Form 48 issued on February 18 at the Federal High Court, Abuja by Oguebego and Okoye have been served on INEC Chairman, Mahmud Yakubu, Secretary, Mrs. Augusta Ogakwu and and Director, Legal Department, Ibrahim Bawa (SAN).

It states: “Take notice that unless you obey the directions contained in the orders of this honourable court, attached to this form (in particular the 5th order) restraining you from acting on the list of nominated candidates, except those that emanate from the plaintiffs, you will be guilty of contempt of court and you will be liable to be committed to prison.”

Should INEC fail to comply with the order, the plaintiffs – Oguebego and Okoye – are at liberty to initiate contempt proceedings against the electoral body and its principal officials, by filing Form 49.
