  • Anambra, Enugu, Kogi in peace meeting over oil wells

Since the discovery of crude oil deposits in the boundary areas of Anambra, Enugu and Kogi states, the affected communities have not known peace. Members of these communities in the areas have taken up arms against one another as the states lay claim and counter-claim over which state the oil wells belong to.

The building of a private refinery, the Orient Petroleum Resources Plc owned by Anambra State-born business men at the area did not assuage the people. Rather, it escalated the crisis as Anambra and Kogi states engage each other in fierce clashes.

The three oil-producing states met recently and have resolved to take steps aimed at addressing the continuous oil-related crisis existing among their communities.

Rising from a stakeholders’ meeting in Enugu recently which was tagged “Inaugural Meeting of Peace, Truth and Reconciliation” and which featured various stakeholders from the communities, they affirmed that their various communities would make good use of the oil in the area.

In his opening remark, the immediate past Special Adviser to the ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Petroleum Resources, Dr. Emmanuel Egbogah, regretted that the communities across the states have under-utilised the “blessings

from God” in the form of oil in their lands.

According to him, it was unfortunate that there is no peace existing among the oil-producing states, adding that the various stakeholders should put their differences aside and work for the good of one another.

His words: “We are given a blessing by the presence of oil in our communities and we are trying to throw away, to scatter this blessing. It is not proper. So, we are gathered here today to bring ourselves back to that blessing. To work in unity, tranquillity and understanding so that we can actually feed from that blessing.

“If we understand the meaning and benefits the host communities have individually and collectively, then we wouldn’t have been having one form of misunderstanding or another.”

In a related speech, the President of Host Communities of Nigeria (a body uniting communities with oil and gas deposits in Nigeria); Prince Mike Emuh emphasised that without peace, nothing meaningful can be achieved from these communities of Anambra, Enugu and Kogi states. He assured that his group will ensure that lasting peace will be realised shortly.

Prince Emuh further urged the government(s) of the affected states to put more efforts so as to guarantee the safety of lives and properties in these communities.

Also speaking, a representative of Orient Petroleum Resources Plc, Mr. Marcel Ifejiofor, expressed the commitment of the companies to better the lives of members of the host communities.

While pointing out that the oil companies cannot operate successfully without the help of the host communities, he called on the various communities to play their part to bring about peaceful co-existence.

“We need encouragement and support from local communities for a safe and secure environment; and encouragement for enough investments through which these communities could be developed.

“So, we strongly believe that our company will bring heavy investment to these

    communities,” he said.

Pointing out that the usual factors responsible for persistent problems between oil companies and host communities is lack of understanding and communication breakdown, he said the company will do all within its powers to live up to expectations.

“We believe that we are going to empower the communities with scholarships and various other rural projects to aid mutual co-existence,” he said.

Speaking to newsmen in an interview, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Anambra State Governor, Hon. Ngozi Okoyo revealed that the government of Chief Willy Obiano has been doing all within its powers to enthrone peaceful co-existence within these communities. She noted that Governor Obiano’s administration has committed resources and time, all geared towards achieving peace among the communities.

Furthermore, another delegate representing Enugu State, Mr. Mike Nwakife advocated for an alternate means of conflict resolution for peace to reign. He frowned at the attempt of some people to hurt others or even take others’ lives over the misunderstanding among the communities as, according to him, the Igbo culture and tradition forbid such.

He further regretted that Enugu State is being taken for granted even though the state hosts a large amount of oil in the region, especially in Iga community. According to him, none of the professionals from the state are featured in the employment schedule of the oil companies, adding that such act is totally uncalled for.

While cautioning that the state wouldn’t resolve to any violent means for it to gain recognition, he said for peace to reign among the three states there was need for fair treatment and equity.

In his submission, a representative from Anambra State, Sir Kingsley Nnabuenyi, said there had been series of unresolved issues among some of the feuding communities outside of oil. He said that there had been communal problems existing in the past before the issue of oil came up.

“Oil became an escalating factor. So, we have to look at the root of the problem and resolve these things historically first,” he added.

At the end of the meeting, a committee was set up to devise a means of putting an end to the oil-related crisis. Members of the committee were drawn from the three affected states and the executive of the Host Communities of Nigeria. The committee was given two months to conclude its assignments.

Pro-Biafra protest paralyzes activities in Onitsha

No fewer than 20,000 members and sympathizers of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Tuesday blocked all the major roads in the commercial city of Onitsha and its environs, protesting continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu.

Shops were closed with other offices which paralyzed activities in the city of Obosi and Nkpor respectively.

Vehicular movements were as usual grounded by the intimidating number of the IPOB members and their sympathizers who marched from the Niger Bridge Head to the former Ogbunike Toll Gate to register their anger against Kanu’s detention.

The attempts by the military to disperse them failed because of their intimidating number and their resort to non violence.

However, the Military showed professionalism that had never been witnessed in Onitsha, under similar situation as they, carefully implored them to free the road for other users.

Onitsha – Owerri road was not free from the disruption of vehicular movements by the protesting IPOB members who also marched to the area.

The crowd was so intimidating that some street markets and markets located along the road including Bridge Head Market, Onitsha Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers Market, Ochanja Market all in Onitsha, New Auto Spare Parts Market and New Tyre Market Nkpor, Building Material Market Ogidi and bakery Market also in Ogidi were all locked.

When The Nation sort to know why they closed their shops, some said they did it in solidarity while others said they were afraid of being invaded by the protesters.

One of their leaders and spokesman of IPOB Comrade Emma Powerful told reporters that they decided to avoid coming close to markets, especially Onitsha Main Market, because of the false allegation by some leaders of the traders, who according him, had been paid to destroy their image, with allegations of looting and destroying the trader’s goods.

According to him, “We are not protesting against our brothers and sisters who are doing their genuine businesses of trading and other businesses, so there is no reason to attack anybody, or invade their shops.

“Neither are we begging anybody to come and join in the protest, people whose lives and businesses have been destroyed by government policies join us without invitation.”

The National Coordinator of IPOB Mr. Chidiebere Onwudiwe who was flanked by Comrade Powerful and other leaders said that the protest was a result of the detention of Mr. Kanu and continued marginalization of South East, adding that the protest would continue Wednesday.

  • Anambra women set for silver jubilee

Anambra State Women Association Lagos (ASWAL), the umbrella body of the state’s women town unions in Lagos State, will on November 21 celebrate its silver jubilee at the Teslim Balogun Stadium Surulere, Lagos.

The celebration will be memorable, said the president of the association, Dr Nkiruka Ifekwem, a lecturer, public analyst and gender activist.

She said, “It is going to be a day like never before as we have put in place activities that would keep the people asking for more. All Anambra women town unions in Lagos, numbering 177 with membership strength of over 7,000 women, are expected to bring their various cultural dances to perform at the event. There will be a cooking competition where Igbo traditional delicacies will be exhibited. Motivational talks will be delivered to empower women. Many corporate bodies are sponsoring this and they are coming with presents for the women.”

In its 25 years of existence, she said the association has “worked assiduously towards achieving a better life for Anambra women in Lagos. It  has been empowering Anambra women in Lagos economically through seminars, workshops, and provision of seed capital to boost their businesses. Our economic empowerment programmes go a long way in alleviating poverty among our members.

“Besides, there has been mentoring programmes for  the women and we have had trainings on parenting, health issues and even on political sensitisation. We have also trained Anambra women on how to create a balance between their work and home as most of them are either career or business women. Last December we collaborated with Anambra State women in the United States of America to have a cancer walk in Awka to sensitise the women on the ravaging disease. During the last election period we trained the women to be politically sensitized, vote any candidate of their choice wisely without being compromised.”

With the benefit of hindsight, she said: “The association came into existence at a time when the present-day Enugu State and part of today’s Ebonyi State were still in Anambra State. But even after Enugu was carved out of Anambra State, the association has continued to grow from strength to strength, recording great successes in women empowerment.

It is in the spirit of these noble achievements that the association plans to celebrate its silver jubilee in a grand style.”

She advised women to try to maximise their potentials, adding: “They should be focused and deviate from all those stereotypes attached to women. Women should note that no one can make you feel inferior without your permission. And to men, I say, ‘women are not seeking equality but equity, please allow women to maximise their potentials.”

The grand occasion is expected to be graced by the first lady of Anambra State, Ebelechukwu Obiano, who will be the chief host. Other key personalities expected at the event include the senators representing the three senatorial zones of Anambra State, two of whom, incidentally, are women, Senator Uche Ekwunife and Senator Stella Odua and Senator Andy Uba.

  • Coalition against decadence in Anambra

    Coalition against decadence in Anambra

The Army, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and a non-governmental organisation, among others, lead a campaign to scale back the slide in values, reports NWANOSIKE ONU

Everyone appears to hate moral decadence but in Anambra State, aversion to declining values is not enough. The Army, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and a non-governmental organisation, Chaplain Corps Policing Explorers (CHAPOL) are fighting the monster which is threatening everything from the home to schools, offices and governance.

The onslaught looked formidable at the Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre in Awka, the state capital, where CHAPOL and the Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC) organised a forum to tackle loss of values.

The turn-up was huge, with five pupils representing each of the 256 secondary schools in the state. Teachers listened attentively as the various speakers made their presentations.

It was the third annual conference on moral values for students from government secondary schools in the state organised by CHAPOL and PPSSC. The aim is to tackle moral decadence and help rebuild what seems to be a broken society where merit and integrity have taken the back seat and cult groups threaten to shut down schools.

The exercise was first organised on July 27, 2012 with 12 pilot schools spread across the six education zones in the state, namely; Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Aguata, Ogidi and Otuocha.

The state commandant of CHAPOL, Joseph Ekwunife told The Nation that the reason for such initiative was to reduce moral decadence that had eaten deep in schools in the state.

The state commissioner for Education, Prof Kate Omenugha, Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to Governor Willie Obiano on secondary school education, Dr. Paul Ifeanyi attended the conference.

Others who attended included members of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the military and state commandants of CHAPOL from Imo, Rivers, Cross River, Awka-Ibom, Delta states.

Wife of Anambra State governor, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano was represented by Lady Ify Atuogu, Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Southeast, Prof David Ebelechukwu.

In his lecture entitled ‘How Do I Overcome Moral Decadence’, Capt. Saheed Shittu, officer in-charge of 302 Military Cantonment, Onitsha, said the only way moral decadence could be checked is desisting from promoting bad life in the society.

He said it is unfortunate that secondary schools where the children are supposed to learn good behaviours, have become a breeding ground for all sorts of vices including cultism.

Shittu noted that there are 46 secret cult groups in the country’s schools, adding that another way of curbing moral decadence in schools is for government to equip schools adequately.

However, he equally advocated that a dress code should be introduced in higher institutions in the country to curtail some of the excesses of students.

He added that negative movies, indiscriminate copying of European cultures by the students have not helped matters either.

Governor Obiano’s Senior Special Adviser on Secondary Schools, Dr. Paul Ifeanyi said a state of emergency should be declared on moral decadence in the country.

“The society is bedeviled with social, political and religious crimes because of moral decadence, corruption has become the order of the day, children are now walking naked along the streets in the name of fashion.”

Ifeanyi also had some strong words for some parents especially some mothers who, according to him, have failed to lead by example.

He added that that some of these parents use such loose words as ‘sexy’ to describe the skimpy dresses their daughters wear.

He said that the major thing to curb the menace in schools is for re-orientation to take place.

The chairman of the occasion, Bishop Emma Obiorah of Life of Faith Gospel Assembly, called for the parents to take full responsibility of their children’s moral development by talking to them about the evil consequences of immorality.

“Our teachers, please let’s go beyond academic exercise and salary, let our teachers be fully concerned about the behaviour and character of the students because the work of a teacher is to develop his or her students academically and in character.”

“For our government and agencies, let us devise a more practical means and system that will have direct influence on the moral vanity and values of our children in schools.”

“Let the governments know that the future of our society is in danger if our young people are bedeviled by moral bankruptcy and this is also where the religious leaders and churches come in to save the society.

“The issue of moral depravity in schools calls for the concern of parents, teachers, governments and whoever can be referred to as stakeholder in the education sector.”

“It is not only the standard of education that has fallen but also, the moral values in schools.”

“We have heard cases of cultism in schools, this is no longer restricted to the universities and other tertiary institutions, it has spread to secondary and primary schools in the country.”

Speaking with The Nation, the state commandant of (CHAPOL), Joseph Ekwunife, commended Obiano and the state commissioner for education, Prof Kate Omenugha for the various innovations they had brought in the education system in the state.

He said CHAPOL went a step further by paying the school fees of some indigent students in these zones, but lamented lack of funds for the hindrance in carrying out some of its programmes.

Also, Ekwunife told The Nation that the group will pay school fees of eight best students from these zones for one full year, who excelled during the just concluded Junior Secondary Schools WAEC examinations.

He said, “Our aim is to encourage reading habit among the students, as no one passes his or her exams without proper study, this will also discourage those students who scramble for private centres during such examinations,” the commander said.

The state Education Commissioner, Prof Kate Omenugha, said that it was because of the moral decadence that the Obiano administration had introduced many policies in the education sector.

She said until all these things were got right that the state government would not rest on its oars, adding that before the end of Obiano’s tenure, that the state would be the first in all academic activities in the country.

Omenugha, therefore, commended CHAPOL and PPSSC for coming up with such wonderful idea, adding that the Obiano administration would always support  good innovations.

Beauty queen fights malaria in Anambra schools

The reckoned that it was not enough to be a queen and have everybody dote on her. That informed the decision by Miss Goodluck 2015, Southeast Zone Jennifer Okorie to take her anti-malaria campaign to schools in Anambra State.

The institutions she visited were Demonstration Nursery and Primary School, Ifite Awka and Be Good Academy, Agu-Awka.

Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Reforms Programme (WSSSRP), the beauty queen’s initiative, was represented by Mrs. Chioma Samuel who talked on the importance of hand-washing.

•Miss Goodluck 2015, Southeast Zone Jennifer Okorie with pupils during her campaign against malaria in Anambra State
•Miss Goodluck 2015, Southeast Zone Jennifer Okorie with pupils during her campaign against malaria in Anambra State

Okorie told the pupils what malaria is all about, how it spreads, signs and symptoms and the prevention.

Some of the symptoms, according to the beauty queen, included profuse sweating, malaise, constant headache, confusion, loss of appetite, diarrhea, cough, anemia among others.

She said, “The parasite is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected female Anopheles species mosquitoes. The parasites multiply in the liver and the bloodstream of the infected person.”

“The parasite may be taken up by another mosquito when it bites an infected person. The mosquito is then infected for the duration of its life and can infect other humans when it bites them”

“Occasionally malaria is transmitted by blood transfusion”

“For this reason, people who have travelled to countries where malaria occurs may be deferred from giving blood for a short period. Malaria can also be transmitted from a mother to her foetus,” she said.

Mrs. Chioma said, “Kids don’t always listen when parents tell them to wash their hands before eating, after using the bathroom, or when they come inside from playing. But it’s a message worth repeating— hand washing is by far the best way to prevent germs from spreading and to keep kids from getting sick. Germs can spread in many ways, including: touching dirty hands, changing dirty diapers, through contaminated water and food, through droplets in the air released during a cough or sneeze, on contaminated surfaces, through contact with a sick person’s body fluids”

“When kids come into contact with germs, they can unknowingly become infected simply by touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. And once they’re infected, it’s usually just a matter of time before the whole family comes down with the same illness”

“Good hand-washing is the first line of defence against the spread of many illnesses, from the common cold to more serious infections, such as meningitis, bronchiolitis, the flu, hepatitis A, and most types of infectious diarrhoea.

“Although people around the world clean their hands with water, very few use soap to wash their hands because soap and water for hand-washing might be less accessible in developing countries. Even when soap is available, it might be reserved primarily for laundry and bathing instead of for hand-washing. Washing hands with ‘soap removes germs much more effectively.

“Millions of children under the age of 5 years die from diarrheal diseases and pneumonia, the top two killers of young children around the world. Hand-washing is not only simple and inexpensive, but remarkably, hand-washing with soap can dramatically cut the number of young children who get sick. Hand-washing with soap could prevent about 1 out of every 3 episodes of diarrheal illnesses and almost 1 out of 6 episodes of respiratory infection like pneumonia.”

The principal of Be Good Academy, Mrs. Philo Enemuoh appreciated the queen and her crew on their efforts in reaching out to the children on what she described as killing disease.

One of the students Kenechukwu Okafor, told The Nation that some of the things they did not know about malaria were taught them by the people.

She said they were grateful to the beauty queen for the lecture and closeness she had with them, adding that some of them had learnt a lot during the exercise.

  • Another dark hour in Anambra

    Another dark hour in Anambra

Less than four months ago, a petrol tanker fire killed 69 persons in Onitsha. Now a lorry accident has claimed 25 lives in another community in the state, NWANOSIKE ONU reports

On May 31 some 69 persons died in a petrol tanker fire; 15 vehicles were burnt. Now 25 souls have died in a lorry crash. Sorrow has been so painfully defined in Anambra State lately.

Since last week, the people of Umuchu community have been counting their losses after a lorry crashed in the community. Apart from the dead, many others were injured.

It was during the closing ceremony of the New Yam festival in the community, being celebrated in each village after the general one by the entire community.

Five masqueraders were said to be among the dead.

It was said that 11 of those who died in the accident hailed from Umuchu, while others were from other communities like Umunze in Orumba South council. Two others died in the hospital, it was said.

From the 13 in Umuchu who lost their lives, eight were from one village named Ibughugu.

The accident shocked the community, forcing Governor Willie Obiano to shelve his official duties to rush to the community early the following morning.

The governor visited some of the injured at the Divine Mercy Hospital, where he told the traditional ruler of the community Igwe Goddy Ezechukwu and some of the leaders of the area that he would pay the bills of all the victims.

The Umuchu community has been meeting to organise an interdenominational service for the deceased tomorrow (Saturday) at the Umuchu Town Hall.

Speaking with The Nation on the arrangement, the chairman of the memorial service committee, Hon Ezeafulukwe Chukwuma said the community had sent letters to Governor Obiano, the state House of Assembly, members of the National Assembly, among others, adding that it was to accord them full respect.

Chukwuma commended Obiano for his quick intervention on the incident, as well as for picking up the hospital bills of the victims.

On Monday, the committee met with all the families of the victims to discuss modalities of the memorial service.

He said, “It is not going to be mass burial for them by the community but a memorial service and after that, each family now goes to bury their own.”

Apart from Obinao’s visit, one of the prominent sons of the community, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo, who accompanied the governor to the scene of the incident and hospital, lamented that what befell his community was calamity.

Ezeemo who contested the governorship election in 2010 on the platform of Progressives People’s Alliance (PPA), is the leader of the party in the state.

He said commercial drivers need comprehensive driving tutorials as a way of checkmating incessant auto crashes.

Ezeemo said, “Though every motorist needs proper driving lessons but those on commercial driving need it more because their mindset once on steering appears to be something else, as most of the auto crashes could be avoided if the drivers are well trained.”

He expressed concern over the frequent multiple accidents in the state, referring to the last that claimed almost a whole family at Agu-Awka axis of the state.

He also called on the members of the federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in the state to take their jobs seriously by ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy.

He said that the crash involving a haulage truck, two Sedan cars and an 18-seater bus at Afor Ibughubu village in Umuchu was heartbreaking as it could have been avoided if proper road signs were marked.

Also he advised that people and masquerades should contend themselves in the village square during traditional festivity that displays masquerade as rural areas were getting fast development that exposes such celebrations to modern dangers.

He commended the people of Umuchu Alanso for not taking laws into their hands when the auto crash occurred in spite of their grief, according to him, they handed the driver of the lorry to the police in place of lynching him.

The monarch of the community, Igwe Goddy Ezechukwu told The Nation that he lacked words to describe what happened on the day.

He said the community is going through pains and agony.

He asked, “Do you know what it means losing such a number of people in one day in a community?”

  • Women fete Anambra Speaker

    Women fete Anambra Speaker

Women in Anambra State have held an event in honour of the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Rita Maduagwu. Why? Maduagwu is the third woman to hold that position in the state, and the women felt it called for celebration.

Two of the organisers of the event, Mrs. Helen Obi and Chief Mrs. Rose Nwankwo said, “Before now, two other women, Eucharia Asodo and Chinwe Nwaebili, had held this position of Speaker in the state and Maduagwu`s turn has made it three”.

“So, we have every right to thank God and celebrate the new Speaker because the women have come of age in Anambra State and it has shown that the affirmative action in Beijing, China is working in the state.

“We do not want to be the head, but to be by  the side; before now, women were not meant to be seen or heard, but today, they are everywhere not only in this state but throughout the country with juicy positions.

“We are proud of our lawmakers in this state for finding the women worthy of leading their male colleagues and who are in turn happy with the leadership qualities of the ladies, we appreciate the support of our men folk in this state” the ladies told the Nation”.

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano and his wife, Ebelechukwu, were not around because of official engagements outside the country, but their representatives, Chief Law Chinwuba and Dr. Mrs. Uju Nwogu, commissioners for Works and Information, and Culture and Tourism, respectively.

The women were led by Lady Helen Obi, a lawyer, and Chief Mrs. Rose Nwankwo, a lecturer and one time chairman of State Primary Education Board (SPEB).

Virtually, all the state lawmakers were in attendance with numerous state government functionaries, academics, businessmen, contractors among others in the all-night event.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Hayford Oseke seized the opportunity to douse tension on the alleged plans to impeach Governor Obiano.

Oseke said, “We do not know the word impeachment, we must support Willie Obiano to succeed and take the state to a higher level, and the state Assembly is the most peaceful in the country”.

“Whoever thinks about impeachment is out of his or her mind and it’s the figment of the person’s imagination. Willie is working and that is why the legislature is giving him all the full support.”

Maduagwu told The Nation that the rumour of impeachment was from the opposition, adding that no amount of speculation could lead the lawmakers to work against the administration of Obiano. She described the relationship between the two arms of government as very, very cordial.

The speaker further described the gesture of Anambra women as an embarrassment of love to her, adding that she lacked words to thank them.

Obiano’s representative, Law Chinwuba described the Speaker as an embodiment of excellence, a worthy mother and epitome of beauty and brains.
