  • No insurgency suspect sent to Anambra, says Ogene

A former member of the House of Representatives, Victor Afam Ogene, has urged Anambra State residents, especially traders, to discountenance the rumours of the transfer of Boko Haram convicts to the state.

The former lawmaker urged them to reopen their markets and businesses, which were shut at the weekend, following the apprehensions the rumour caused among the residents.

Ogene, who represented Ogbaru Federal Constituency of the state, was the House spokesperson.

He noted that although the prisons were under the Federal Government, it was inconceivable that persons awaiting trial for insurgency would be transferred to states outside the jurisdiction where they are being tried.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, Ogene said: “So far, I don’t think there are more than five convictions for Boko Haram offences in Nigeria. Indeed, the bulk of those in custody for insurgency are awaiting trial inmates, who are routinely brought to court near their places of remand – certainly not anywhere near the Southeast.”

The former lawmaker recalled that, following last Saturday’s protest, he contacted some officials at the Presidency and was assured that nothing of the sort was being contemplated.

He said there was a political motive behind the rumours.

Ogene wondered why the Anambra State Government was silent for over 24 hours, when the state’s economy and life in its commercial cities were grounded.

He queried: “Could there be a correlation between Governor Obiano’s recent boast that he would not allow the All Progressives Congress (APC) to gain a foothold in Anambra State and the recent protests to malign the APC-led Federal Government?”

Ogene reminded Obiano that electioneering was over, adding that the governor should not covertly or overtly pitch the people of Anambra State and the Southeast against the APC administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, state Chairman of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Mrs. Vivian Udedike praised Umeadi for the vehicles. She thanked the governor for granting financial autonomy to the judiciary and for his open-door policy which she said made it easy for him to be consulted on matters concerning the judiciary.

“We thank the chief judge for his interest in staff welfare and in the transformation of the judiciary,” she said.

  • Two ‘gay men’ remanded in Anambra

Two gay suspects were yesterday remanded in Anambra State. They were remanded for nine additional days by Chief Magistrate Nkemdilim Ike in Onitsha.

This, according to the magistrate, was to give time to consider applications on the matter.

The suspects, Ebuka Anyasi (23) and Michael Ikegbunam (19) were detained in Onitsha prison on June 15 for allegedly having carnal knowledge of two minors.

The unnatural act allegedly lasted for seven days with the victims locked up.

The two accused pleaded not guilty to the three count charge.

The Prosecutor, Clem Nwancho, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) submitted a three-page motion application and an affidavit opposing the plea for bail.

Lead counsel to the plaintiff Godwin Mmadubuko objected to the bail, insisting that they should be remanded in prison  pending determination of the case.

The lead defence counsel, John Chukwuma, submitted a nine-paragraph motion and an affidavit praying the court to grant the accused bail since the offence was bailable.

Ike adjourned the matter to July 1. “The Court hereby adjourns this case to Wednesday, July 1, so that I can study the various written applications for and against the bail of the two accused,” she said.

Obi of Onitsha, monarchs seek end to road carnages in Anambra

The residents of the commercial city of Onitsha woke up on the May 31, 2015 to witness the recent calamity befallen the community of the former president of Nigeria, the late Nnamdi Azikiwe, when a tanker filled with fuel got burnt, killing 70 persons and injuring many in the process.

Since then, such a thing had happened in other cities in the country including Lagos.

It was not the first time such a road carnage happened in Anambra State, as over 60 person equally died at Umunya in Oyi local government area of the state in 2009, while over 20 vehicles were equally burnt.

Following the incessant road carnages along major roads in Anambra, the traditional ruler of Onitsha, Obi Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, who also, doubles as the state chairman, Traditional Rulers council, is worried over the situation.

Obi Achebe is seeking for ways with other traditional rulers, of finding a solution to such carnages.

He said last weekend that he would meet with the state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano to find ways to minimise the road carnages in the state.

Achebe made the pronouncement when the leader of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA) and one time Governorship candidate in the state, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo paid him a courtesy visit at his palace.

According to Achebe, “we have planned to visit Governor Obiano to give workable suggestions to reduce accidents and carnages on our roads, as well as thank him for his swift responses on that day after the incident.

However, he warned that any criticism from politicians against any government had to be constructive, adding that criticisms made every government from state to federal rise up to their responsibilities.

The philanthropist (Ezeemo) who equally, visited the scene of the tanker fire incident and the hospital where the victims were kept (Toronto) went to Achebe’s palace with PPA chairman in the state, Mathias Ameke among others.

According to the monarch, “you should not relent, do not oppose with bitterness but be fair and support the leaders in noble and people oriented programmes”, he advised.

While speaking with the monarch, Ezeemo, urged the monarch to use his position to prevail on the government to look for better locations for motor parks along high ways in the state.

Ezeemo said, “I am here to condole the monarch on the loss of lives and property which happened on that fateful Sunday, I feel bad about it like wise many people within and outside this state because lives were involved”

“I want you to use your position to appeal to the Anambra State government to relocate the parks, especially, those at Upper–Iweka to more appropriate designations to avoid such a thing again”

However, Ezeemo said that his political party stood for politics of development and provision of basic needs for the citizenry.

“We have always used well timed and constructive criticism on government issues as well as applaud ruling party when it is doing the right things”

Furthermore, Ezeemo said that politics should not be seen as a do or die battle like some people take it to be.

Speaking further with The Nation, Ezeemo and Ameke said that they were in the palace of Obi Achebe because it happened in his domain, adding that the visit was given honour to whom it is due.

During the incident that occurred in the commercial city, after ramming into a building at Upper-Iweka on the day, over 14 L300 buses were burnt.

The Nation discovered that the orphanage home which was established over 10 years ago, has over 12 children and situated along Nise – Agulu road.
