    Anambra PPA advocates Option A4

Leader of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) in Anambra State Mr. Godwin Ezeemo, has advocated the use of Option A4 to stop electoral fraud.

He praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting a credible election, as rigging was not as open and massive as in previous ones.

Ezeemo, however, called on INEC to consider the Option A4 because of its many benefits.

He said Option A4 would reduce fraud and bring sanity into the electoral system, adding that it would encourage men with proven integrity to venture into politics.

The former governorship candidate described as awful, the trend that political adult players were leaving behind for the coming generation.

“Elections should not be a must-win or do-or-die affair. When you desire to serve your people, all you need do is to showcase yourself and ideology, and if accepted, so be it,” Ezeemo said.

  • Observers demand immediate set up of tribunals in Anambra

Following the alleged manipulations and irregularities that characterised the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Anambra State, the coalition of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) accredited observers is demanding immediate set up of election petition tribunals in the state to correct the anomalies.

Briefing reporters yesterday at the Marble Arch Hotels in Awka, Anambra State, the INEC observers, led by Chris Azor, said the results of the elections were mutilated with falsification of figures in favour of one party.

According to the observers, “we must consciously discourage the practice of installing the wrong person on elective office because of the obvious negative implication on good governance, accountability and peaceful co-existence”

Furthermore, the group observed with dismay, the discrepancy between results declared at the polling units and the collation centres, adding that such highlights the weakness of the collation process.

Ballot Snatching: Obiano vows to pursue hoodlums to den

Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has vowed to pursue hoodlums who snatched materials meant for Saturday’s state assembly election in the state to their den to rescue the materials.

Speaking with newsmen after his accreditation at Aguleri, Obiano, who was accredited manually after the card reader failed to identify his fingers, said he would do everything to rescue the materials.

He said he received security reports that the hoodlums snatched the materials meant for some polling units in Ekwusigo local government.

The governor also said that he had gotten the assurances of the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mr. Edwin Nwatarali, to send more polling officials to the area to support those on ground.

The governor’s tenure is still running, so the election in Anambra is only for the state assembly.

  • Honour for philanthropist in Anambra

    Honour for philanthropist in Anambra

Good work pays. In the case of philanthropist Godwin  Ezeemo, the reward came in the form of recognition and an award.

Mr Ezeemo is appreciated by many for his humanitarian outreach. He has lifted many homes and groups in the society and has brought change in the education sector in the state with his Back to School programme to reduce the drop in male enrolment in schools.

Ezeemo, who hails from Umuchu community in Aguata Local Government Area, Anambra State, has left his footprints in many areas, ranging from education and agriculture to rural development.

That was why the organisation, Leaders and Award Model Foundation of Nigeria, selected him for award based on his exemplary leadership in the state.

The foundation is led by Alhaji Ahmadu Yakubu, who was represented at the award presentation by Mr. Uche Aguoru.

It was held at the office of the Orient Daily newspaper behind Anambra State Government House in Awka.

The award recipient has changed the lives of widows, the needy and other less-privileged persons, youths in many communities in Anambra state.

He singlehandedly built state secretariat for the Nigeria union of Journalists (NUJ) in Anambra state, which the state government and other individuals could not do for many years.

At Umuchu community, he rehabilitated state roads, established agricultural industry that employed over 100 unemployed youths, built a huge Anglican church among others.

Already, he has over 700 workers in his employ in some of his industries, all established in his community.

The leader of the foundation in Anambra State, Mr. Uche Aguoru, told TheNation that Ezeemo has become a role model to many of the youths of today.

He described Ezeemo, 61, as a man of many parts, adding that what shocked the foundation when it came to see the man nominated for the award, was the level of development he had brought to his area without being in government.

“When somebody nominated him at Abuja and we were detailed to go to Anambra to see with our eyes… when we got to Umuchu community, we were shocked that such men still existed in the society.”

“The recommendation we got from people in this state and what we have seen made us to select him for the award and not for any pecuniary attachment”

Aguoru, however called on other individuals and organisations in the country to emulate Ezeemo in helping others to live.

“He has exhibited so much kindness to the less privileged in the society and he should not relent, he should keep it up irrespective of any distraction from enemies of progress”

Also, Comrade Matthias Emeke, who told The Nation that he is the state chairman of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA), described Ezeemo as a dynamic person for being a form of saviour to the less privileged and the needy.

Beaming with smiles and looking fulfilled, Mr. Godwin Chukwunenye Ezeemo, told The Nation that his major aim is to see a society far better than what exists today.

He said, what he is doing is not to earn praises, but for the poor, the widows, the less privileged to be happy in the world where people are abandoned and neglected.

The philanthropist said there were many honest and sincere persons in the society today despite the situation, adding that such people should be fished out for such form of awards.

According to him, “I did not know how the foundation came up with my name for the award, but this day will ever remain memorable in my mind”.

“This is an event that will go down in the annals of Anambra history, the medal and plaque given to me by the leadership and role model  foundation will not be in vain as long as we live” Ezeemo said.

According to the observers, “we must consciously discourage the practice of installing the wrong person on elective office because of the obvious negative implication on good governance, accountability and peaceful co-existence”.

The group insisted that the experience of late commencement of polling would not re-occur, adding that INEC should not stretch the patience of the Nigerian voter beyond tolerable level in future elections.

The group therefore, called on INEC to make clear what guidelines would govern the accreditation process during the April 11th, 2015 elections.

“We urge the commission to make a clear and definitive statement on these elections taken into account needs to correct its own deficiencies and inform the Nigerian public as what to expect on Saturday,” it said.

Furthermore, the group observed with dismay, the discrepancy between results declared at the polling units and the collation centers, adding that such highlights the weakness of the collation process.

The observers therefore, recommended that votes cast in polling units, be cross checked to tally with results posted at the collation centres.

Strike: NBA wades into JUSUN in Anambra

The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) in Anambra state has waded into the crisis rocking Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) and Anambra state government which has led to four month industrial strike by the body.

NBA has demanded from the state government of Chief Willie Obiano to as a matter of urgency, release the capital and overhead costs for the first ended quarter of the year to JUSUN.

Other decisions taken by the state branches of NBA in the state led by Chukwudi Obieze, included that an implementation committee be set up to see the implementation of the rest of the agreements reached.

Briefing reporters Wednesday in Onitsha after the meeting, Obieze said the committee should be headed by the NBA with representatives of the state government, JUSUN officials as members.

Also, other points agreed upon at the meeting were that the state government should release the monies to the judiciary and all its other arms would reflect the drop in the state consolidated revenue.

“That the state will commence release of the capital and overhead costs, while the actual salary cost will be released until the judiciary sets up an E-payment platform.

“The judiciary to notify the state, when E-Payment platform will be ready and that all sums in the judiciary sub-head already commenced, to remain with the state.”

Based on the agreed terms, NBA therefore called on the JUSUN to call off its strike with immediate effect, while the state government had also been called upon not to renege on the agreed terms.

But failure by the state government to stick to the terms, NBA said it would take drastic measures in the state which the chairman of chairmen failed to disclose.

NBA said it was concerned with the lingering crisis that had crippled all the courts in the state, which had lasted for about four months in Anambra.

  • Bloody elections in Anambra

    Bloody elections in Anambra

Although renowned for electoral brigandage, Anambra State has never in its history witnessed the level of election violence and bloodletting as perpetrated during the last presidential election. Nwanosike Onu, reports.

Anambra State witnessed unprecedented election violence last week as there was free flow of blood in some of the local government areas. This was aside the brigandage that has come to be the norm in the state elections.

More pronounced was the situation at Ihiala Local Government Area, where two political moneybags, Ifeanyi Ubah and Ernest Obiejesi engaged each other in a brawl that claimed the lives of two police men.

Although, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Uche Ezeh, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said he was not aware of the situation, the affected officers whose identities could not be verified were posted to the chieftains from Abuja.

The Nation gathered that the matter has seen been taken over by the force Criminal and Investigation’s Department (CID).

Guns boomed during the battle between the two oil moguls, who ironically worked for President Goodluck Jonathan during the election which could best be described as a charade in the state.

The trouble however began after both men had successfully delivered the state for the president, and Obiejesi wanted his APGA candidate declared winner for House of Representatives seat for Ihiala.  Ubah was however adamant, insisting that his own PDP candidate must be declared.

Security operatives led by the Anambra State Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bashiru Makama stormed Ihiala headquarters to make the peace. But two police officers, from Mopol and Special Patrol Unit (SPU) attached to the two politicians had already been shot.

They were rushed to a hospital, where they unfortunately gave up the ghosts.

It will be recalled that in 1983, when a policeman attached to the former political bulldozer in old the Imo State, Late. Dr. Kenneth Ozumba Mbadiwe was killed; the great Arondiuzogu politician was prosecuted. The people of Anambra State have therefore started calling for the prosecution of the two oil magnates, for their complicity in the tragedy.

    Nnewi too

The mayhem was not limited to Ihiala, as the same scenario almost repeated itself in Ukpor in Nnewi South Council Area.

Here, chairman of Vintage Communications Limited, Mr. Emeka Moneme almost lost his life, as he was victim of a vicious attack by thugs, as he made to carry out his duty at the INEC collation centre.

According to Moneme, who was interviewed on his sick bed and in pains, he was trying to rescue INEC official who was being manhandled by the suspected thugs, when they swooped on him. “At about 4.00am in the early hours of Sunday, I went to Ukpor Nnewi South on a media work to find out why the result of the election held on Saturday had not been released. On getting to the headquarters, I ran into Mr. Ikenna Mbazulike Amaechi in company of others molesting an INEC official. It was horrific.

“They removed his cap and were hitting him from right, left and centre, demanding for the result he came with and dragging his bag with him. This was in the full glare of so many people.”

“Seeing that Ikenna, whom I know was one of the molesters, I said this man cannot be such a rascal and I approached them. At this point, the INEC man ran to me for protection and I obliged him by shielding him from further attacks.

But rather than abate, they became more aggressive, with Ikenna asking me: “What is your own?”

“I said you don’t need to beat this man, if you have objection to what he is doing, you need to channel your objection to the appropriate authorities; but he replied ‘How dare you?”

“Before I knew it, he landed a blow on my left eye and told his colleagues to descend on me. Before I knew it, I was bloodied.”

“I managed to escape from the hall and across the gate where I managed to inform the police and made a report. So far, some of the culprits have been arrested. It is pathetic. This was a man who knows me very well, and has even been to this office. He knows I was there on official duties, but said he had to do what he did because I was trying to rescue an enemy.”

Anambra State Police Public Relation’s Officer, Uche Ezeh, confirmed that some political thugs actually invaded Nnewi South INEC office to disorganise the day’s proceeding, but were repelled by the police. He could however not confirm that anybody was beaten up by the thugs, adding that some of the thugs had been picked up by the police command.

Ezeh also said that perpetrators of electoral violence would not go unpunished.

    Horrific days for widows

But the most painful of all the attacks were carried out against widows in all the polling units in the state for supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC), presidential candidate, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari on the day.

According to the state coordinator of the widows, Hon. (Mrs.) Hope Nwandu, who was in pains for the lashing the widows received in the hands of security operatives led by PDP chieftains all over the state, the experience was horrifying.

Speaking with The Nation on Sunday, Nwandu said their sin was supporting Buhari and APC and wearing branded clothes of the presidential candidate before the election.

On the election day proper, the PDP bullies and their security operatives laid siege for the widows at the polling units and made sure they did not vote.

“We have over 100,000 widows in the state, we came out to vote on the day, but because of non-availability of materials and card-reader failure, the women in their different areas started making calls. When they noticed the widows, they descended heavily on us everywhere.”

“They tore dresses of some of us, others sustained injuries; but we are today invoking the spirits of our husbands to descend on those who perpetrated that cowardly act on us. We can bear the pains now because APC won.”

    Another dead

As at the time of filing this report, unconfirmed report had it that one of those who sustained injuries during the mayhem at Ihiala and a son to an Adhoc staff of INEC, had died in an unknown hospital at Ihiala.

This time, Obiadi gave out yards of cloth to widows, saying that the gesture was his little way of helping out the needy women.

He laos presented them with cash, urging them to go out and vote.

“This gesture did not start today,” he said.

“I have been doing it but I used this opportunity to mobilise for APGA and our flagbearers including Chief Victor Umeh for Senate, Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo for Federal House of Representatives and Charles Azubuike Okoye for House of Assembly.

“I pleaded with them too to continue to support our governor, Chief Willie Obiano and his wife Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano in the good works that they are doing.

“We are mobilising for election and we utilised this opportunity to educate our widows and others more on how to vote and who to vote.”

The member representing Anaocha Constituency 1 in the state House of Assembly, Hon. Ebele Leonard Ejiofor lauded the initiative of  Obiadi who he said continued his programme with widows despite not yet contesting any position.

Ejiofor described Obiadi as being consistent and disciplined in politics and party loyalty.

“It is a good development specifically because he is not contesting anything and for him to utilise the opportunity to mobilise APGA and the community for his political party shows he has character. It is a good development.”

A guest at the event and APGA candidate for Anaocha House of Assembly constituency 1, Charles Azubuike Okoye, said it was amazing that somebody not contesting will be spending money to campaign for his party this way and buying wrappers for widows.

“We are supporting his gesture with N100,000 and would be glad to do more if need be because he has supported us by campaigning for us and all other contestants in APGA despite the fact that his aspiration was not met. He did this as his way of supporting the government of Governor Willie Obiano’s administration and supporting APGA as a party to enable its candidate win the 2015 polls and you heard him mention that. I appeal to them to pray for Obiadi and the party for God to enable us win the election having worked hard’’.
