  • ‘I ‘ll beat APC candidate in Ifako-Ijaye House of Reps poll’

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Lagos State, Fatima Mohammed, had joined the House of Representatives race in Ifako-Ijaye Constituency.

She boasted that she will get the ticket at the primary and beat the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate at the poll because she is popular.

Mohammed said she commanded respect among the PDP and APC members in the local government, adding that her philanthropist activities have made her a community woman.

The aspirant, who spoke with our correspondent in Ikeja, said the personalities of candidates, and not their parties, will determine the outcome of the federal legislative election in the constituency.

She described Ifako-Ijaye Constituency as a politically conscious area where constituents have sharpened their skills for electing candidates based on merit and competence.

Mohammed said when an unpopular candidate is fielded by parties, voters would respond with apathy by shunning the polling booths in protest.

The aspirant predicted success for herself at the PDP primary, adding that she will give the APC candidate a run for his/her money.

She said she had rejected the overtures to return to the progressive bloc in Lagos since she defected from the fold in 2007, following the failure of Mr. Jimi Agbaje to pick the Alliance for Democracy (AD) governorship ticket.

Mohammed hailed the womenfolk in Ifako/Ijaye, who she described as her permanent fans, adding that they would prefer her to other candidates in next year’s poll.

She said: “I am waiting for the race to commence. I am joining the race for the House of Representatives in  Ifako/Ijaye. Certain circumstances aborted my desire to represent the constituency in the past. But, for 2019, the foast is clear for me. People are waiting for me. I will get the PDP ticket and defeat the APC candidate. I have the support base. I have the people behind me. 2019 is my year of going to the House of Representatives.”

  • Assembly by-election: Ajimobi, others rally support for APC candidate

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has urged the electorate in Ibarapa to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in tomorrow’s House of Assembly by-election, Mr. Olukunle Adeyemo.

The governor described him as the best among the candidates.

The seat became vacant following the death of the former Speaker Michael Adeyemo on April 27.

Addressing a crowd of party supporters at a campaign rally at Eruwa, the governor urged the people to reciprocate the good gesture of his administration, as exemplified by the several completed and ongoing projects in the area.

Ajimobi led the campaign train of the APC leaders and supporters, including his wife, Florence, APC State Chairman Akin Oke, members of the House of Representatives, Assembly members, led by Speaker Olagunju Ojo, members of the State Executive Council (Exco) and Chief Adeniyi Akintola (SAN).

He said: “Ibarapa people are very close and dear to me. I can unequivocally say that Ibarapa has taken a front burner since I became the governor of this state. The access road to Ibarapa, which had long been abandoned, received the needed attention under my administration.

“Past administrations had merely patched the road. But when we came on board, we decided to reconstruct and dualise it. Similarly, Ibarapa Polytechnic used to be a satellite campus of the Polytechnic in Ibadan. But today, it has become an autonomous polytechnic, courtesy of our administration.

“Apart from these, we are also working on the provision of potable water for Ibarapa, which is located at Ayete. We have nearly completed the project, and it will certainly extend here. Ninety per cent of the work has been completed. It will serve several communities around here.

“But I am hearing certain things from the grapevine about Eruwa. Some people are complaining that we created more local council development areas (LCDAs) and reviewed the existing boundary delineation.

“Whatever the case may be, these are minor issues that should be resolved through dialogue. Let’s settle them amicably. When our father, the Alaafin of Oyo (Oba Lamidi Adeyemi), pointed out some of our oversights during a similar exercise in Oyo, we resolved the issues peacefully.

“This won’t be different. I’m a man of peace and I’m appealing to our people in Eruwa to embrace dialogue on the matter.”

The campaign train had visited the Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adegbola, to seek royal blessing for the APC candidate.

  • Ekiti 2018: ‘Fayose’s unpaid salaries will make our victory easier’

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Ekiti State, Mr.Makinde Araoye, has said failure of Governor Ayo Fayose’s government to pay salaries as and when due would make victory easy for the opposition in the July 14 governorship election.

Araoye expressed confidence that government workers would vote massively for the APC candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, having experienced hard biting poverty in the last three years due to alleged incompetence manifested in Fayose’s inability to pay workers’ salaries and pension.

He said it was wicked for a governor to be owing workers and pensioners eight month arrears in an environment that was heavily anchored on civil service monolithic economy, saying this had further lowered the standard of living of Ekiti populace.

Speaking with reporters on Ado Ekiti on Thursday, Araoye said time has come for workers to appropriate their votes in a more judicious and appropriate way, by voting for Fayemi based on his track records and belief in running worker-friendly policies.

The APC chieftain said it sounded unfathomable for Fayose to intentionally kill those legacy programmes initiated by Fayemi that could have shored up the Internally Generated Revenue, pointing out that the measure was largely responsible for the failure of governance
    in Ekiti.

Araoye said: “When the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi came on board in 2010, he appreciated the fact that there was an urgent need to establish those investments that could generate money for our dear state.

“That was why he took N20b from the capital market out of which he invested over N2 billion on Ikogosi Warm Spring, built  the State Pavilion located along Ado New Iyin Road, revived Ire Burnt Brick that was inaugurated by former Kano State Governor, Alhaji Rabiu Musa
Kwankwaso, set a solid foundation for youth engagement in Agriculture and many others.

“Before Dr. Fayemi’s exit, the Ikogosi Warm Spring was already generating over N45 million into the state coffers monthly. The Ire Burnt Brick had begun skeletal production and was attracting serious patronage within and outside Ekiti.

“But today, those programmes have been abandoned. They have returned to that moribund States they were before Dr. Fayemi came on board.

“One wonders why should those programmes be rendered impotent just because of politics by Governor Fayose, even when he makes noise everyday that the state is economically challenged.

“This is the major reason why our people must divorce themselves from unnecessary emotions and vote wisely on July 14.

“They should resist attempt by clever politicians to delude them into taking decisions that would land them in more sufferings and gnashing of teeth after all they have seen and made to pass through in the last few years.”

Araoye advised Fayose to stop turning Ekiti into a beggarly State in the name of stomach infrastructure, saying: “making our people to queue under a scorching sun for several hours because of a kongo of rice and N200 was not only debasing but ridiculing Ekiti’s collective
    integrity.

“The July 14 election is a reclamation war for all of us. It is a time we must seek our political freedom and this we must realize for those lost glory to return and for us to regain our pride as truly a set of Knowledge people.”

  • Buhari congratulates APC candidate

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, for winning the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the July 14, 2018 governorship election in Ekiti State.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, President Buhari commended all the participants in the keenly-contested primary. He urged them to keep upholding the values and philosophy of the party by supporting the APC candidate in the forthcoming election.

President Buhari believe that the track record of Fayemi, a former governor of the state, as a reformist with a penchant for building educational infrastructure and promoting the welfare of the ordinary people, will bolster his chances at the election.

The President noted that the successful primary, which featured more than 30 aspirants, further validates the credentials of the APC on internal democracy and its preparedness to take the country to another level of development.

  • Adams is APC candidate for Lagos by-election

Mr Naheem Adams is candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the September 30 Lagos House of Assembly by-election for Eti-Osa.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the election is to fill a seat in the Assembly, after the death of Mr Kazeem Alimi on July 18.

The party’s Assistant Publicity Secretary in the state, Mr Abiodun Salami, told NAN yesterday in Lagos Adams won the primary on Monday.

He said the candidate polled 294 votes to defeat five others.

According to Salami, the primary, whose outcome was accepted by all, was peaceful.

The APC official said 384 persons were accredited, while 370 votes were cast, with 14 votes voided.

He said: “At the end of the primary, Mr Naheem Adams polled 294 votes, beating six aspirants.

“The aspirants embraced one another and congratulated the winner.”

Salami urged Lagos residents to continue to support the party.

  • Survey places Obaseki in good position to win election

Survey places Obaseki in good position to win election

An independent survey conducted by Lakewhyte Communications Limited has said that governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Godwin Obaseki, is in a good position to win Wednesday election.

The survey said Obaseki has been rated higher based on his antecedents and based on the fact that Governor Adams Oshiomhole had performed well.

It said from the 10,000 prospective voters sampled in the survey, 64.32 percent promised to vote for Obaseki while 34.92 percent said they would vote for Ize-Iyamu.

According to the report, “On the question of Better Knowledge of Governance and capacity to deliver on promises, 6,217 of the respondents (62.17 percent) preffered Godwin Obaseki of APC, while only 3,701 (37.01 percent) opted for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of PDP. A total of 82 number of responses were invalid.

“They responded to the second question in almost the same manner. Asked who they would vote for, 6,432 (64.32 percent) pledged their votes would go for Obaseki, while 3,401 (34.01 percent) responded in favour of Ize-Iyamu of PDP.

“If this trend pans out, and all things being equal, it will mean that the APC candidate, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, will likely win the governorship election with a margin of about 30 percent over his rival.

This Survey also examines the two Candidates’ areas of Strengths and Weaknesses and tries to determine who would likey have an edge in the scheduled poll.

“Obaseki’s strengths are in five critical areas: (1) Being a member of the party in power at the federal level. This could be an advantage as people of the state would want to vote for APC to be able to enjoy benefits that may accrue from that level of government. (2) Unity of purpose by his party members in the state. Obaseki has the full support and backing of APC members in and outside the state.

“Even those who lost the party primaries have all joined forces to ensure the party’s victory at the poll.  This was the result of the reconciliatory efforts he and Governor Adams Oshiomhole made to appease aggrieved members. (3) APC’s clear and practicable manifesto. This is another attraction which his party commands and which will likely work in Obaseki’s favour on Wednesday.

“The Oshiomhole factor is unputdownable. He is an enigma in the Edo political equation. Although his achievements in the past eight years can easily speak for themselves, the Governor has used every opportunity available to recount them and market them to the people. He told the people that all they needed was a tested successor to continue in the same stead.

“Obaseki will likely enjoy tremendous geo-political advantage. Edo State seats on a tripod. Edo South senatorial district has 58 per cent of the voting population; Edo Central has 16 per cent, and Edo North has 26 per cent of voters in the state. Incidentally, the zone where PDP commands a seemingly huge popularity is the Central zone, where it has the likes of Chief Anthony Anenih, Chief Tom Ikimi, Mike Onolemenme, Senator Clifford Odia, Senator Odion Ugbesia and others with the exclusion of former governor and senator, Prof. Osunbor as well as the Igbinedions.

“The people of Edo North, with 26 per cent of voters, will likely cast almost 100 per cent for Obaseki because of the Oshiomhole factor and the area where his Deputy hails from. It would be recalled that recently, Traditional rulers of all the three zones pledged their support for Obaseki and his Deputy, Phillip Shaibu.

“They hinged their support on the fact that Oshiomhole had performed exceedingly well compared to others in the last 16 years of democracy and of the need to support Obaseki, who is also part of the Oshimhhole success story, rather than voting for someone who was part of what some have described as the dark days of development in the state.

“Added to this is the fact that Edo State has 18 local government areas with 24 seats in the House of Assembly. Of this number, PDP has only three constituency seats, while APC has 21 seats, a situation that will make it extremely difficult for the table to turn in favour of PDP, as members of the Edo State House of Assembly would also defend their turf electorally.

“Weakness: The only known weakness of Obaseki is the perception that he is a stooge of Governor Oshiomhole. Being an expert in economic management, some believe that he would likely  emphasise higher taxation in a bid to generate more income for the state it stated.

“While Ize-Iyamu’ Strengths lies on the fact that he is a formidable politician who also knows the party he is contesting against – APC – inside-out. His strength in the Wednesday election rests mainly on his political sagacity. Generally, his campaign messages seem not as credible as his opponent’s as they are centered mainly on tackling the APC’s perceived failures without proffering credible solutions.

“His Weakness: Many unresolved issues appear to be working against Ize-Iyamu’s chances in the forthcoming election. Three of them are notable: (1) Credibility question. He is widely perceived as a representation of the Igbinedion legacy of non-performance and corruption.

“He occupied at the time, two strategic positions, as Chief of Staff, and Secretary to the State Government. In addition, he was alleged to have been the one that signed most of the fictitious multi-billion naira contracts in that administration, which were never executed.

“The factionalisation of PDP at the national level, which has rubbed off on the party in the state. Although INEC has recognised him as the candidate of the party, others who contested with him in the primaries have largely deserted him including many notable PDP politicians from his zone and beyond. His supporters are mainly from Edo Central district that may not be able to win the election for him because of population disadvantage.

“As can be seen, even the above SWOT Analysis conducted favours the same trend of thought expressed by potential voters above. In other words, that the APC candidate has higher chances of clinching the Governorship seat than his PDP counterpart,” it stated.

  • Boroffice, Ariyomo hail APC candidate

    Boroffice, Ariyomo hail APC candidate

    •Aspirants urged to unite

THE senator representing Ondo North, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice and Tunji Light Ariyo have congratulated the Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN for his victory.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Kayode Fakuyi, the senator urged other aspirants to unite and work for the APC success at the governorship election.

It said: “Following the outcome of APC governorship primary election in Ondo State, I have congratulated my brother, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN during a phone conversation.

“Like I said before the primary election, we need to sink our differences and work together for the success of our party in the governorship election. The post-primary collaboration is essential to unify all members of our party.

“Cardinally, I salute my teeming supporters for the sacrifices and contributions towards the campaign while restating my irrevocable commitment to ensure our great party wins the governorship poll.”

Another aspirant, Ariyo, congratulated Akeredolu for his victory at the primary.

He hailed the committee headed by Jigawa State Governor Mohammed Abubakar for conducting a hitch-free primary.

The Akure-born politician urged all aspirants to work together with Akeredolu to facilitate victory for the party on November 26.

  • Who becomes Ondo APC candidate?

    Who becomes Ondo APC candidate?

No fewer than 34 chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have informed the party leadership of their intention to contest the governorship. The primary will hold between now and September. Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU writes on the factors that will shape the shadow poll.

posters of aspirants adorn and litter Akure, the capital of Ondo State. It appears that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is more prominent in the poster war. Governorship aspirants on the platform of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are still waiting for directives from Governor Olusegun Mimiko. The posters are of various sizes and shapes. They are complemented by banners and bill boards sponsored by contenders. They point to one thing: an impending epic struggle for the opposition ticket at the primary.

Eyes are on the Sunshine state as it warms up for the succession battle. No fewer than 52 APC chieftains have declared their aspirations on the pages of newspapers. Thirty four of them have formally informed the State Executive Committee (SEC) of the party headed by Hon. Isaacs Kekemeke, a politician from the minority Ijaw, South Senatorial District.

A source said about 10 aspirants are itching to succeed Mimiko. They include Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Gbenga Elegbeleye, Senator Remi Okunrinboye, prince Nekan Olateru-Olagbegi, Bamiduro Dada, Chief Sola Ebiseni, Dare Emiola, Adedayo Omolafe, Dayo Fadahunsi, Benson Amuwa, Dare Bada and Debo Ajimuda.

In the Social Democratic Party (SDP), former Defence Minister Dr. Olu Agunloye is the lone aspirant.

The aspirants are busy nurturing their structures. As they campaign, they are also targeting delegates. This has become necessary, following the assurance by Kekemeke and the Southwest APC leader, Chief Pius Akinyelure, that the party will organise a transparent primary. “Since there will be no imposition of candidates, the contenders are working hard and more determined as they prepare for the primary,” said a stalwart, Hon. Bola Ilori from Ondo Kingdom. “The expectation about a transparent and credible process has energised the contenders and given them much confidence,” he added.

But, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had to warn the gladiators last week that they may be running foul of the law because it has not blown the whistle for the commencement of the race. The warning followed reports that the campaigns were characterised by character assassination and intra-party violence.

Miffed by the turn of events, party elders have appealed to the aspirants to pull the break. A meeting of the aspirants was summoned by the party leadership at the APC Secretariat, Akure, where they reiterated their loyalty to the party and promised not to heat up the state. Not all the aspirants attended the meeting. A party chief, who accompanied one of the aspirants to the meeting, said the meeting demarcated between the contenders and pretenders. He added: “Only genuine aspirants turned up. It was like a census. From that day, it was evident that not all the 52 aspirants are serious contestants.”

A fierce battle is expected in the APC. It is a crowded race. In Owo/Ose axis, seven aspirants have thrown their hats into the ring. In Akoko, there are over 10 aspirant. The aspirants include Senator Ajayi Boroffice, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), Dr. Segun Abraham, Chief Jamiu Ekungba, Mrs. Jumoke Anifowose, Chief Olusola Oke, Adeniyi Adegbonmire, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, Light Ariyomoh, Senator Tayo Alasoadura, Dr. Paul Akintelure, Odunayo Akinrinsola, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, Dr. Odunayo Ayorinde, Hon. Victor Olabimtan and Niran Akinsuyi Sule. Others are Niran Oladunni, Akinwale Akingbade, Akin Awodeyi Apata, Boye Oyewumi, Olakunle Oyegoke, Olaoluwa adeyeye, Adejoro Adeogun, Prince Derin Adesida, Olakunle Jaliu, Foluso Adefemi, and Awosika (Zokas).

The high number of contestants is worrisome to party elders, who suspect a hidden agenda. Last month, there were reports that some aspirants are moles of the PDP. Tracking them may not be easy because many APC and PDP chieftains have long interaction when they were in the Alliance for Democracy (AD). There have been defections to and from the PDP and the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and vice versa.

However, observers have narrowed the contest to a three-horse race. They believe that Boroffice, Akeredolu and Oke are top contenders. Others disagree, saying that nobody can predict the nearest future. In their view, others, including Abraham, cannot be underrated. A chieftain, Olu Akinola, a lawyer, said: “There is no aspirant who can be ruled out. Many of them are assets to the party. Others in the race know their level too.”

The APC is not categorical about zoning, unlike its bold stand on the democratic primary. Although the constitution of the party does not encourage zoning, it appears the Ondo chapter is disposed to the “rotational principle.” But, the principle has been twisted and interpreted in a way that favours aspirants canvassing the option.

There are three districts in Ondo State. The North has produced the late Chief Adekunle Ajasin (Owo) and the late Chief Adebayo Adefarati (Akoko). Ose politicians are saying that they should be considered. Also, Akoko and Owo aspirants are saying that, since other districts have also enjoyed the slot, it is their turn.

The South produced the late Dr. Olusegun Agagu, who ruled between 2003 and 2008. He was succeeded by Mimiko from the Central, who will soon complete a two terms of eight years. Although Akure is part of the Central, it is making a separate case for power shift. Its argument is that, since 1999, no Akure indigene has served as governor. The last governor from the state capital was the late Commodore Bamidele Otiko. He was a soldier.

According to sources, the mood of the party leadership favours power shift to the North. That may have accounted for the highest number of aspirants from the district. Indeed, the competition is stiffer in Akoko/Owo/Ose axis. Making a case for Owo, Mrs. Anifowose, the daughter of Ajasin, said Akoko and Owo have an informal rotational agreement, adding that since the last governor, Adefarati came from Akoko, the slot should go to Owo. Even, in Akoko, there is division. Adefarati was from Akungba, Akoko South. Those from the other councils have argued that it is now their turn to produce the governor.

However, there is another bloc in the Ondo APC rooting for merit. To this group, competence, integrity and experience should not be displaced by ethnic sentiments. Thus, according to these chieftains, eligible aspirants should go to the race, adding that the primary will separate the wheat from the chaff.

The entire Southwest APC has a deep interest in the Ondo governorship, like the PDP. Akinyelure believes that the victory in Ondo should be a prelude to the 2018 battle in Ekiti. As the Kekemeke’s executive is set to release the guidelines for the primary, conscious efforts are being made to ensure a level playing ground for aspirants. This is necessary to prevent a post-primary crisis.

The two main rivals-Boroffice and Akeredolu-have not relented in their mobilisation across the 18 councils. They are sensitive to the unwritten zoning arrangement, which may knock Oke out of the race. Thus, the two of them are courting the lawyer-politician and former PDP candidate. At home, Boroffice has a major rival in Abraham, who has his fanatical supporters. In Owo, where aspirants have vowed not to step down for any consensus candidate, Akeredolu, who is considered as an Ibadan-based professional, may not get a collective endorsement.

Boroffice is a household name in Nigeria. He is not a prophet without honour at the home front. The eminent scholar is the Asiwaju of Akokoland. A professor of Human Genetics and ranking senator, he has won senatorial elections twice in the North. This attests to his popularity at the grassroots. Although he sought the ticket in 2012, he was persuaded to step down for Akeredolu. During the election, he and other Akoko chieftains delivered the area to the defunct APC.

Akeredolu, a successful lawyer, is the former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice under the military regime. He was the choice of the party elders who dictated the tune in 2012. These elders appealed to other spirants to step down for him. It is ironical that his supporters are now decrying an alleged plan by the elders to tilt the pendulum of support toward another aspirant. Akeredolu is a former President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA). He once aspired to become the National Legal Adviser of the party, but the slot went to Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN). It is doubtful that he is the toast of party elders who supported his bid four years ago. However, he has a solid structure.

Oke, a consummate grassroots politician, ran an impressive race in 2012, emerging second. The former PDP National Legal Adviser joined the APC, shortly after last year’s presidential election. Manay PDP chieftains defected along with him. He thus has a dual advantage. Oke is perceived as the Lion of the South, being the towering political figure from the area. Also, he has a formidable structure, which he has consistently nurtured from his PDP days. He is a popular politician; vocal and rich to run a successful state-wide campaign. Oke rose to fame in the aborted Third Republic when was elected into the House of Representatives. He was the Commissioner representing the state on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and later, he served as the Chairman of the Ondo State Oil-Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC).

However, the major obstacle to Oke’s ambition is said to be his PDP background, which the leadership of the APC, particularly those at the Southwest, may not be comfortable with. The suspicion is being fueled by the activities of former PDP chieftains who are now elected National Assembly members on the platform of the APC. Many Southwest APC leaders were taken aback when one of the senators, in defiance of the party’s directive, pitched his tent with the Senate leadership, an action that earned him public condemnation from the APC leadership.

Despite his popularity, Oke is perceived as a new comer, who was still firing salvos at the Southwest progressive bloc when the APC was being formed. A source said that he may not have influence over the APC delegates, who were elected during the party congress.

The major aspirants have some hurdles to cross. For Boroffice, the primary will not be a walk over, although he has a bright chance. In 2012, when Akeredolu was imposed, there was no protest. But, ahead of the primary, there is a propaganda against Boroffice, who seems to enjoy the backing of the pillars of the party in the region.

Also, Akeredolu may need to work on the perception that he is an alien in Ondo politics, who could not play the role of a party arrowhead effectively after losing the 2012 poll. Party chieftains have alleged that he temporarily left active politics after the election, only to return in the wake of last year’s presidential election.

What has happened between 2012 and now that has made the former NBA president not to get the endorsement of his previous backers? A source said that reality has dawned on those who projected him in the past that he has not learned the ropes. Besides, the lawyer may have been associating with  some estranged disciples of the National Leader, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola, who have turned around to destroy the ladder that took them to the top.

Borrofice and Senator Oluremi Tinubu belong to the APC Caucus In the National Assembly. The political association has been interpreted to mean Tinubu’s endorsement of his ambition. He has been described as the candidate of the regional power brokers. But, Boroffice, who denied the endorsement, explained that he had only secured the endorsement of the majority of the delegates, who will elect the candidate at the primary.

He told reporters that his contributions to the growth of the Ondo APC earned him the mass acceptance.

A chieftain of the party, who assessed the aspirants, said many delegates have confidence in the professor. He added: “He is a performing senator and a rallying point for the party since the last election. Boroffice believes in party supremacy and disciple. After he was asked to step down for Akeredolu, he did not sabotage the party. He  worked for the party by winning his native Akoko South West Local Council.

“During last year’s elections, the senator won his second term election. He also delivered the senatorial district for the APC during the presidential election. He also led the APC to victory in other National Assembly elections.”

Abraham is a cleric, businessman and philantrophist. He has served on the boards of giant companies. He has a thriving business. Many groups across the state have endorsed his ambition. A critic of the Mimiko government, he has promised to create jobs, reduce the cost of governance and fight corruption, if elected as governor.

Ekungba, a banker, hails from Owo. Like Abraham, Boroffice, and Anifowose, he was an aspirant in 2012. He is a member of the APC Board of Trustees (BoT).

Anifowose, a lawyer, is from a great family. She is a former Attorney-General Commissioner for Justice. She was the Chairman of the defunct ACN.

Alasoadura is from Iju/Itaogbolu axis. He served as Commissioner for Finance under Agagu. He was the Director-General of the ACN Governorship Campaign Organisation in 2012.

Sulre Akinsuyi is a former member of the House of Assembly and Commissioner for Special Duties.

  • I am still in the race, says APC candidate

I am still in the race, says APC candidate

The All Progressives Congress [APC] senatorial candidate for the Abia North Senatorial Zone, Abia State, Nnenna Lancaster-Okoro, has debunked rumors that she has withdrawn from the March 5, INEC rescheduled re-run election in the zone.

Speaking with newsmen in Ohafia, Lancaster- Okoro blamed her political detractors and opponents who are intimidated by her credibility and wide acceptance by the people of the zone as peddlers of the unfounded rumor.

Lancaster-Okoro wondered what would make her to step down for any of the other contestants saying she is in the race to win and not to step down.

The UK based legal practitioner said she was in England when the Court of Appeal at Owerri nullified the election of Abia North Senatorial Zone and called for a complete repeat of the exercise and that shortly after she arrived the country she started hearing the rumour that she has been paid money to step down for a particular candidate

She said, “When I heard it, I thought it was the handiwork of mischief makers but when somebody from the high quarters asked me about it, I felt it was time and proper to put the records clear.

She stated that “people came to me to say that the former governor of the state, Orji Uzor Kalu, asked me to collapse my structure to support him for the race and I told them to go and tell him that he should be the one that should instead collapse his structure to support me because I am more credible and academically and better in all ramifications to represent the people of the zone in the senate.

Lancaster- Okoro called on the people of the zone to vote for her as APC candidate who is capable of attracting federal presence that would impact positively on the lives of the people, assuring them of all round effective representation in the senate.

  • INEC: Bello is APC candidate

    INEC: Bello is APC candidate

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday said Alhaji Yahaya Bello is the APC governorship candidate for Saturday’s supplementary election.

He replaces the late Abubakar Audu, who died before the conclusion of the election process.

The INEC’s Deputy Director, Publicity, Mr Nick Dazang said: “They have sent the name of their replacement candidate, the runner-up in their primaries, that is Yahaya Bello, to the commission”.
