Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Alimosho axis of Lagos State on Saturday lauded Governor Akinwunmi Ambode over the completion of a total of 21 roads and three bridges connecting the state to Ogun State. The leaders, in a joint statement, said the development was another eloquent testimony of the commitment of the state government to make every part of the state economically viable and livable.

They are Senator representing Lagos West senatorial district, Solomon Adeola Olamilekan; member, House of Representatives representing Alimosho, Olufemi Adebanjo; his counterpart representing Ifako-Ijaiye, Nurudeen Akinwunmi; Lagos State Commissioner for Employment and Wealth Creation, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf; Special Adviser to Governor Ambode on Housing, Kehinde Joseph; member, Lagos State House of Assembly, Bisi Yusuf; and Lagos State APC Organising Secretary, Alhaji Abdullahi Enilolobo.

“The launch of a network of 21 roads, totalling 27km with bridges from Command, Ipaja to the boundary of Ogun State, marks the final implementation of a vision started by our leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, with the construction of LASU-Iba Road, to Egbe, Igando and Egbeda (when Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola was Commissioner for Works). Governor Raji Fashola continued the dualisation to Ipaja.

“You (Governor Ambode) continued the improvement from Ipaja to Command School, Ayobo, and now to the boundary of Ogun State. Apart from creating an alternative route away from the Abeokuta Expressway, we can now travel to Ota boundary from Ogun State through AIT to Ipaja and Abesan to LASU-Iba Road- Ojo-Badagry without going through Agege-Abeokuta Expressway,” the leaders said.

The Lagos-Ogun boundary roads which have been completed and ready for inauguration are Ikola Road with Odo Obasanjo Bridge – 6.4km (from Ipaja/Command to Ilo River); Ogunseye Road – 1.75km (from Ajasa/Command to Ikola Road);Oko Filling Road – 1.5km (from AIT to Ilo River); Osenatu Ilo road – 620m (from Ibari Road to Ilo River); Amikanle road – 3.1km (from AIT to Ogunseye Road); Aina Aladi road – 1.9km (from AIT to Ilo River) and Aiyetoro Road with a bridge– 1.4km (from New Market/Ishefun Road intersection to Ilo River).

  • Polls sequence crisis: APC leaders, senators reach truce

The All Progressive Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC) and the party’s Senate Caucus ended a three-hour meeting yesterday saying they were close to a truce on the controversial election sequence crisis.

Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan told reporters after the meeting that many issues tearing the party apart including the controversy over election sequence, were discussed.

He said the party would soon constitute a caucus, comprising members of the executive, the legislature, governors and the party leadership, to resolve issues affecting the party.

He said: “When you have everybody on the same page, you would have reduced misunderstanding to its barest level or eliminated it completely. There may be times when there will be disagreements. Such disagreements must not be allowed to become a clog in the wheel of progress.

“The idea of bringing everybody to the table is to ensure that we are able to resolve any issues; issues at party, National Assembly and at the executive levels and with some of our governors. Should there be any issue, we should be able to discuss and dispense with it as quickly as possible.

“The discussions centered around so many things, including the issue of election sequence. We are coming to a situation where that can be resolved. We are hoping that as soon as that caucus is constituted, this kind of issue will easily be addressed and resolved.

“This is our government. This is our administration. We should not be fighting dirty in the public. If we have misunderstanding, we should be able to deal with it inside our house. It is not as if a political party will not have problems, what makes the difference is for the political party to manage such challenges that will arise from time to time. We are on top of the situation. We are going to resolve all our problems.”

Lawan, who described the visit of the APC NWC to the Senate “as a father visiting his family, said the NWC requested for an interaction with the party’s Senate caucus to review events in the party and the country.

He continued: “Senators took the opportunity to express problems bedeviling the party. The party will soon constitute a team that will comprise the Executive, Legislature, governors and the party itself. The meeting was worthwhile and the party was happy to be here this afternoon. It was a frank discussion.”

National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, who led other members of the NWC, said they were in the Senate to discuss issues that bound them together.

Oyegun said they were in the Senate “to listen”. “It is good to discuss issues that have arisen in the polity. There is election in less than one year. There is an interest that binds us together. We are here to listen and to strategise ahead of the elections coming up in February, next year.”

Alimosho APC leaders denounce alleged division

Leaders of  All Progressives Congress (APC) in Alimosho Federal Constituency in Lagos State came out yesterday in large numbers  to denounce rumour of division in their fold.

Amid singing and dancing at a news conference at the Lagos West Senatorial Office of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, also known as Yayi, in Ikeja,, the leaders said the reports of division were figments of imagination of a section of the social media.

The party leaders affirmed their loyalty to Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State  and  Governor Rauf Aregbesola  of Osun State and others.

They used  the opportunity  to endorse Ambode  for a second term in office.

  • Ogun 2019: APC leaders laud Speaker’s ambition

Ogun 2019: APC leaders laud Speaker’s ambition

AHEAD of the 2019 general elections, some chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, particularly in Ogun West senatorial district, have described the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Suraj Adekunbi, as a gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of the ruling party with all the wherewithal to succeed incumbent Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

The APC chieftains, including a former Minister of State for Education, Senator Iyabo Anisulowo, Bolaji  Aretola and Mrs. Funmilayo Adeniran, noted that in order for the party to have a smooth sail in the next year’s election, the APC must present a governorship candidate who had contested election for political office before now and has had experience in governance.

The leaders said Adekunbi, who hails from the Ogun West senatorial district, fits the bill of the kind of governor the state needs after Governor Amosun’s tenure. The party leaders stated these recently in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government area of the state, when Adekunbi met with women groups from the Ogun West Senatorial District as part of his consultations for the 2019 governorship.

In her own speech, Anisulowo said the APC leaders in the senatorial district will work with Governor Amosun to select the best aspirant with the capacity to win the next governorship election and also continue the laudable programmes of the incumbent administration. She added that such an aspirant must be a politician, be accessible and also competent.

On his part, Aretola, a former local government chairman, said the Speaker, considering his political experience and unflinching loyalty to the ruling party, remains the most formidable aspirant from Yewaland among those seeking to succeed Amosun. “If we have somebody that is number three citizen in the state and the governor would want us to prop up somebody from this senatorial district to become governor for the very first time, I think such a person is our best choice,” he said.

THE leaders of the Southsouth Zonal Caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have adopted President Muhammadu Buhari as their candidate of choice for the 2019 presidential polls.

The position of the caucus was contained in a communique issued at the end of its meeting on Tuesday in Abuja.

The communique, which was a culmination of over the three hours meeting, was signed by the Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, the state’s former governor, Adams Oshiomhole, Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs Usani U. Usani.

The communique reads in part: “The caucus expressed full satisfaction with the steady growth of the APC in the Southsouth and urged its members to continue working hard to ensure a full democratic takeover of the Southsouth Region.

“Caucus acknowledged the changes in the Nigerian political economy and commended the excellent performance of the President Muhammadu Buhari Administration and enjoined Nigerians to continue to support the administration in every way possible.

“Caucus noted with regret, the current tendency of some political leaders to write letters rather than follow existing open lines of communication and dialogue.

“It noted that such methods of political engagement can only breed disaffection and mediate the on-going effort at repositioning our economy for growth and development. It therefore called on political leaders to join hands with President Muhammadu Buhari to contain all forms of violence, strengthen the foundation of our polity, expand and grow the economy and continue to promote sustainable growth, peace and people-centered development.

    “On the herdsmen issue, Caucus strongly condemns in strong terms the killings of Nigerians and sincerely and deeply sympathises with the states, communities and families that have been affected, expressed full confidence in the Presidential Committee headed by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and enjoined leaders and governments at all levels to work with the Committee to find lasting and sustainable solutions to the problem;

“Given the above scenario, recognising the very successful war against corruption, the effective degradation of Boko Haram, the very laudable agricultural and economic policies that have seen us out of recession, the continuing high regard for his person and leadership around the world that have promoted a bright new image for Nigeria, the credibility he continues to enjoy among the vast majority of Nigerians and among APC members, and the need for continuity in policy and programmes, the Caucus of the APC South-South Zone, unanimously adopted and endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari to run for a second term as President…”

  • Urhobo youths caution defector over attacks on APC leaders

Urhobo youths, under the aegis of the Urhobo National Youth Council (UNYC), has cautioned a former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jesutega Onokpasa, to exercise restraint in his verbal attacks on Urhobo political leaders.

Addrssing reporters in Asaba, the Delta State capital, an Urhobo youth leader, who is also an APC Youth Leader, Monday Oyeghe, noted that Onokpasa’s recent outburst against some APC leaders, including Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, depicted the defector as a tool to pull down the Urhobo by their enemies.

Oyeghe said UNYC was aware that Onokpara’s recent attacks, following his defection to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were influenced by pecuniary sponsorship.

The youth leader warned that further verbal attacks on the party’s leaders would be resisted.

He said: “We read with disgust the scandalous reports peddled by Jesutega Onokpasa against reputable sons of the Urhobo nation, including Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, leader of APC in Delta State and Dr Samuel Adjogbe, the Executive Director Projects at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). We are shocked to learn from reliable sources that he was paid to cause discord among prominent Urhobo leaders.

“As a group, we totally condemn the act of brandishing notable sons and daughters of the Urhobo nation with derogatory names by the lawyer, who is expected to be learned and civilised with his comments.

“Any further derogatory comments from him against our leaders under any pretence – whether political or otherwise – shall be strongly resisted with every lawful means. Whoever has Jesutega’s ears should call him to order.”

  • Buhari dismisses allegation of ethnic bias at dinner with APC leaders

Buhari dismisses allegation of ethnic bias at dinner with APC leaders

President Muhammadu Buhari formally responded to allegations of his favouritism towards the Hausa/Fulani  on Thursday night,  and told critics that they got it all wrong about him.

“Don’t allow anybody to talk of ethnicity. It is not true,” Buhari told leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at a dinner he hosted in their honour in Abuja.

It was in  apparent response to allegations that Fulani herdsmen are allowed to maim and kill unchallenged because they are of the same stock and religion as him.

Citing  his experience with judges of Northern extraction in the aftermath of the 2003,2007 and 2011 presidential elections which he lost,Buhari  said: “I am the only politician that ended up three times in the Supreme Court and still virtually refused to give up.

“There is one thing that disabused my mind in a dispassionate way about ethnicity and religion across the country.

“You know that the tribunal for presidential election started at Court of Appeal. The President was my classmate. I missed only four of the court’s  sittings.

“For that first phase, 2003, we were in court for 30 months. My legal team leader was Chief Ahamba (SAN), an Igbo man. He asked the panel of judges to direct INEC to produce the voters register to prove to you that the election was done underground.

“When they came to write the judgment, they completely omitted that. Another Igbo man, a Roman Catholic, in the panel of judges wrote a minority report.

“I went to the Supreme Court. Who was the Chief Justice? An Hausa Fulani, a Muslim from Zaria. After 27 months, Ahamba presented our case for two hours and 45 minutes. The Chief Justice got up and said they were going on break and when they return  the following day, they would  deliver judgment.

“They went away for three months. That was what made it 30 months.

“And when they came back, they discussed my case within 45 minutes.

“ In 2007, who was the Chief Justice? A Muslim from Niger State.

“The third one, who was the Chief Justice? My neighbour from Jigawa State. The same religion and the same tribe.

“Finally, the determination of our people and technology: the Permanent Voters Cards made it possible for us to be here.

“Voters education is important. Let people be educated that it is their right to choose leaders of their choice.”

The  President also pointed at the representation of the Southeast in his cabinet to show that he has nothing against any ethnic group.

His words:  ”There is something that hit me very hard and I am happy I hit it back at somebody. “Seven states of the North are only represented in my cabinet by junior ministers, ministers of state.

“ In Southeast, I got 198,000 votes but I have four substantive ministers and seven junior ministers from there.

“You are closer to the people than myself now that I have been locked up here, don’t allow anybody to talk of ethnicity. It is not true.

“The PVCs worked well in 2015. That was why when the former President rang me, I went temporarily into a coma. I will never forget the time. It was a quarter after 5pm and he said he called to congratulate me and that he had conceded defeat. He asked if I heard him, and I said yes and I thanked him for his statesmanship.

“The truth is after being a deputy governor, a governor, Vice-president and President for six years, and he took that decision is great. He could have caused some problems. He had stayed long enough to cause problems.”

Buhari also spoke on why he tends to be slow in taking decisions.

He said: “ as I am sitting here, I am very much aware of the problems in this country and I will always reflect on the historical antecedents before I arrived at decisions.

“I keep telling people that while I was in uniform, quite reckless and young, I got all the ministers and governors, and put them in Kirikiri. I said they were guilty until they could prove their innocence. I was also detained too.

“I decided to drop the uniform and come back. Eventually, I am here. So really, I have gone through it over and over again. This is why I am not in a hurry virtually to do anything. I will sit and reflect and continue with my clear conscience.”

He thanked his guests for honouring his  invitation.

He added: “ if I don’t ring you or call you, it is not because I ever forgot how you supported me at one stage or the other over the years from 2003 till now.”

Speaking on behalf of the  APC leaders, the party’s National Chairman,Chief  John Odigie-Oyegun said he was  highly  touched by what Buhari said.

He said: “I hope it is understood in the proper perspective.

“It indicates quite clearly that you have listened to what people are saying. It has been such a terrible misrepresentation. You have seized this opportunity to say that you are not what people are saying.

“There are so many  misconceptions. Look at the example you have given that those who stood by you through the periods of problems and struggles are not people of the same religious persuasion.

“You have said it that you are not an ethnic jingoist. I know this because I have known you for a very long time.

“For some of us, when these things are said, we find it painful but I hope there will be proper rendition of what you said today and it will start clearing the air.

“The only thing I will add is that you have had a most challenging 2017 in every respect, including your son’s predicament.”

He prayed that Nigerians will start to see the good results of the essence of the President in 2018, especially with all the struggles and efforts he has put in for the country.

He said “For almost three years, you have laboured to reconstruct the broken foundation of this nation. You have laboured to put a new infrastructure without which development is impossible.

“They were just dipping hands in the treasury, the banks were just changing papers and collecting commissions and we all said we were developing and prospering. But it was not a development that touched the ordinary man of this country.

“For the first time, that is about to begin. It has taken three years of foundation laying and thank God the harvesting, I believe, is going to begin this year.

“It is my hope that it will come early enough for people to see that if one has to call anybody the architect of a modern Nigeria, you will bear that distinction.

“Like I said when we were launching the book of your achievements, what you started, you cannot complete. That is a matter of fact. But what you started is basic, fundamental that Nigerians must learn a new way of doing business based on their sweat from which profit will come based on their resources.

“When we are used to doing things wrongly, change becomes very difficult and we are passing through that stage now.

“It is not a struggle we can complete in four years or even eight years. But you have started something new and that change is not for nothing. It is even deeper than most of us understand. We must carry it on until it becomes second nature to us.

“We are firmly, totally and completely behind you and when you make up your mind soon as I hope you will, you will find an army behind you. Those who wish you well are already working and it is my hope that you will agree eventually that continuity is important and critical. Otherwise, all what you have struggled for will come to nothing.”

  • Monarchs, APC leaders endorse Ambode for second term

Monarchs, APC leaders endorse Ambode for second term

Traditional rulers and political leaders in Isolo, Lagos West Senatorial District, have endorsed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for a second term.

They urged the electorate to extend his tenure beyond 2019.

The Osolo of Isolo, Oba Kabiru Agbabiaka Ilufemiloye, Gubernatorial Advisory Committee (GAC) member, Pa Mukaila Taiwo and Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Chairman  Shamusedeen Olaleye, witnessed the launching of Itesiwaju Ipinle Eko Foundation.

Home Affairs Commissioner Abdulakeem Abdulateef described the foundation as the campaign platform for the governor’s re-election.

The ceremony, which was witnessed by notable All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders, traditional rulers, businessmen, market leaders, youth groups, community associations and members of indigenous Awori associations, trailed its launching at Ejigbo LCDA few days ago.

Olaleye, who welcomed the dignitaries, said there was no vacancy at the state secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, the seat of government, in 2019.

He said the second term bid of the governor was the priority of the APC family.

Thanking the party leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for its progress and the advancement of political careers of APC chieftains in Lagos, Olaleye said the foundation had the blessing of the former governor.

He said: “APC has methods. We gather, based on the consent of our leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. What we are doing has his stamp. There is no vacancy at Alausa. Governor Ambode is our candidate. All the votes from Osodi/Isolo belong to Ambode in 2019.”

Giving reasons for the endorsement, the council chairman added: “We thought Babatunde Fashola had finished the work. But Ambode surprised us. Despite the fact that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) got the votes in 2015 from here, Ambode completed Ago Palace Way. He didn’t follow the results of the votes cast by the Igbo for the PDP.

“By all standards, it is one of the best roads in Lagos. He has started the Airport Road. When foreigners come to Nigeria, the first local council they see is Osidi/Isolo. Two more roads’ contracts have been awarded in Isolo. He has turned our general hospital at Isolo to a modern hospital. If he has done all these in two years, he will turn Lagos into another London in the next six years.”

Oba Agbabiaka hailed Ambode for bringing hope to Lagosians, adding that he had been endorsed by the state’s Council of Traditional Rulers.

He said: “All of us in Lagos believe that our governor should return in 2019. We the monarchs have endorsed him for a second term and we have communicated our wish to Asiwaju Tinubu.”

A former member of the House of Assembly, Niyi Fabikun, urged members of the foundation to carry the electorate along.

He added: “We should prepare. We should not allow the mistake of 2015 to repeat itself.”

A lawmaker, Jude Idimogu, said: “Our governor is doing well. We will ensure that he gets a second term. His performance is good. I don’t see anybody else coming out to contest against him.”

Pa Taiwo said: “We should work hard to retrieve our stolen mandate in Isolo from the PDP in 2019.”

Abdulateef urged the party faithful to emulate Asiwaju Tinubu, who he described as a successful and firm leader.

He said: “Party politics is meant for ushering in growth and development of the society. Asiwaju Tinubu is a successful leader, who stands tall among his contemporaries. He always stands firm; thus, we must all stand firm. Unless God gives his consent, nobody can be in any position. If there is no development in the society, that means something is wrong with the leadership.”

The commissioner called for unity, saying no single caucus can singlehandedly win the election for the party.

He said the foundation had kick-started an unprecedented grassroots mobilisation for the most performing governor in the country.

According to him, other programmes, including vocational development, human resources development and empowerment of the aged and widows, would follow.

At the event were the first chairman of Osodi/Isolo LCDA, Chief Ayo Adegboyega; a retired Permament Secretary in the Ministry of Energy Resources, Mrs Iyabo Obasa; Alhaji Shamuseeden Adele; a former House of Representatives member, Gbolahan Okunleye; Alhaji G. A. Lawal, Mrs. Olateru Olagbegi, Chief Kereke Aro, Prince Habeeb Farounbi, Ekerin of Isolo, Chief S. A. Lawal; a former National Population Commissioner, Otunba Sabiu Okanlawon, and council secretary Kolawole Olojede.

  • APGA media forum faults Nwoye, APC leaders

APGA media forum faults Nwoye, APC leaders

The APGA Media Warriors Forum has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Anambra State, Mr. Tony Nwoye, and state party leaders, for faulting Southeast governors decision to ban the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Ín a  statement by its co-ordinator, Chinedu Obigwe, the group said Governor Willie Obiano and his colleagues deserve commendation for saving the Southeast from avoidable crisis.

The statement reads: “Tony Nwoye and other Anambra APC leaders should bury their heads in shame over Igbo marginalisation by APC-led Federal Government that is responsible for Biafra actualisation agitation. The condemnation of Southeast governors’ decision to ban IPOB in the region by Anambra APC is a politically-motivated face-saving measure that is dead on arrival. Why did Anambra APC maintain sealed lips when the APC-led Federal Government military launched Operation Python Dance with massive deployment of soldiers in the region?

“Why did Anambra APC maintain sealed lips when the APC-led Federal Government made crucial appointments in NNPC without deeming it necessary to include an Igbo man in the appointment? IPOB ban in Southeast by the governors of the region is a political decision that is needed to douse tension in the region. No leader will take pleasure in watching the people he is governing being killed. The ban on IPOB by Southeast governors is a political masterstroke that has achieved its purpose in the region.

“Governor Obiano deserves commendation as the only Southeast governor that deemed it necessary to honour Biafra fallen heroes with a befitting burial. Anambra APC leaders are day dreamers that will remain dreaming till the declaration of Obiano as the winner of the November 18 election.  Governor Obiano’s good work in Anambra State is marketing itself and the people will re-elect him for a merited second term because of their satisfaction with his good work.”
