Kashamu: I only congratulated APC leaders

Ogun East Senator-elect Buruji Kashamu yesterday said he only sent an “innocuous congratulatory message” to All Progressives Congress (APC) National leader Asiwaju Bola TInubu and other leaders of the APC

In a response to Tinubu’s reaction to his open advertisement, Kashamu said: “For me, it is high time politicians and leaders rose above petty issues and raised the bar in constitutional democracy. We should not just be democrats in words but also in deeds. We should play politics without bitterness.

“It is on record that no Nigerian politician has taken former President Olusegun Obasanjo to the cleaners even as a sitting President like Asiwaju Tinubu did. Yet, Chief Obasanjo forgave him. As for me and Baba Obasanjo, he remains my father and leader, just as I am his son and follower. At no time did I abuse Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

“As a true party man, I campaigned vigorously for my party and its candidates. Now, the elections are over, and as a true sportsman, I thought I should congratulate those who won. Short of any praise-singing, what I said in the congratulatory message that they chose to react to a week after it was published was that there was no way anyone can wish away the achievements of Asiwaju Tinubu in the nation’s political annals, particularly in Yoruba land.

Part of the message also reads: “Although I now belong to the opposition, your achievements transcend political divides and I am not ashamed to publicly acknowledge them.

“I salute your courage, commitment, doggedness, forthrightness and tenacity of purpose even in the face of daunting opposition and challenges.

“By your sheer wit and unwavering commitment to democratic ethos, true federalism and economic prosperity, you led the Alliance for Democracy (AD) from a one-party state to a regional party, and now a national party that is about to form the government at the centre.”

“Now, how do these translate to praise-singing? Are they not facts of history that I merely adumbrated?

“He accused me of purchasing my election with money, the appropriate forum to prove that is the election petitions tribunal and not the pages of newspaper.

On the U.S case, I wish to state for the umpteenth time that the United States as the bastion of democracy and the Rule of Law would not lend itself to any form of abuse of the fundamental human rights of an innocent soul, especially one that has been arrested, tried and freed by its most trusted ally – the United Kingdom.

“I am not running from any trial. All I have asked is for the relevant parties to follow due process – if they believe that I yet have a case to answer.”

Army: no plan to intimidate APC leaders

THE Army yesterday faulted a story on a planned military “grounding” of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in Lagos as “unwanted and baseless accusations” aimed at damaging its reputation.

It said the publication was “meant to tarnish the good name of the division and distract the Army from performing its constitutional duties”.

The Army stated its position in a statement by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations of the 81 Division, Col. Mustapha Anka.

The military, the statement said, “is apolitical and will only uphold its mandate in protecting lives and property of the citizenry before during and after the elections”.

He said the troops deployed were for “internal security, to assist the police where necessary”.

The statement reads: “The attention of the 81 Division, Nigeria Army, has been drawn to some false, malicious, biased, provocative and unprofessional publication alleging that Nigerian Army directed an ‘operation ground APC leaders in Lagos’,  and that the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah is to be relocated to Lagos on Saturday.

“The publication went further to state that Armoured Tanks are to be deployed in front of the houses of APC key leaders, including His Excellency the Executive Governor of Lagos State Babatunde Fashola and the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The newspaper went ahead to state that the division has mandated a Sector Commander in Lagos to take charge of the operation to stop Senator Ahmed Tinubu from leaving his home on election day, adding that other officers have also been assigned to take charge of the houses of other opposition leaders.

“Once again, the division wishes to reassure Nigerians that troops deployed were for internal security, to assist the police where necessary.”

  • ‘Lamido’s call for kidnapping of APC leaders reckless’

‘Lamido’s call for kidnapping of APC leaders reckless’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday came under severe attacks for trivialising   kidnapping at the interactive session of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDPGF) with the media and civil society organisations.

Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido was alleged to have jokingly suggested the abduction of two leading members of the  All Progressives Congress (APC) as a way of financially crippling the opposition.

But the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCPCO) said the Lamido joke was rather expensive at a time kidnapping ranked as one of the social ills threatening the nation.

APCPCO’s Director of Media and Publicity of the, Mallam Garba Shehu, told newsmen that it was unfortunate that a governor of Lamido’s standing would make such careless statement in front of television cameras at a time when the nation was fighting insecurity.

Shehu said: “As we were preparing for this press conference, some of the PDP governors are meeting in Lagos and some of the language that are coming from that place are not particularly pleasant. I want to consider what the governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido said.

”I feel it is some kind of morbid joke and I hope that it didn’t come from his heart. Otherwise, the time when kidnapping is a very serious plaque nationwide. I think that it is terribly terrible and in bad taste that a governor will stand in the front of the television cameras and announced that to break the APC, all they needed to do is to kidnap two APC leaders and the party would be broke.

“From what we are seeing and the language coming out, it’s like people are not conscious of the fact that Nigerians have sensibility. Otherwise, people should not just ruffle the emotions of the people of this country.

”For us in the APC presidential campaign organisation, kidnapping is a serious threat to this country and it is not a matter that people should be joking about as it is with Boko Haram.

    Security is priority

Of course, it is not surprising that for our presidential candidate, Gen Mohammadu Buhari, the key issues are about security and the lives and property of the people of this country. As you can see from his various speeches, this is a matter he intends to give his all.

”The devastating effect of the Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast, and general insecurity pervading the land is an issue that has continued to bewilder our people. But we all know that were it not for the lax attitude of our government, the insurgency would not have continued to fester as we have it today.”

Shehu also quote Gen. Buhari as saying: “Let me assure you that if I am elected President, the world will have no cause to worry about Nigeria as it has had to recently; that Nigeria will return to its stabilising role in West Africa; and that no inch of Nigerian territory will ever be lost to the enemy because we will pay special attention to the welfare of our soldiers in and out of service, we will give them adequate and modern arms and ammunitions to work with, we will improve intelligence gathering.”

According to him, Gen. Buhari remained genuinely committed to reduce wastages in the system and restored the confidence of the people.

His words: “You are aware that recently our presidential flag bearer, Gen Muhammadu Buhari was at the Chatham House, London, United Kingdom (UK) and gave a speech on his vision for Nigeria if elected resident in the forthcoming election.

“Even as a nation with statistics, such as in the case of 33.1 per cent of Nigerians living in extreme poverty, and almost 60 per cent of youth unemployed, Gen Buhari bemoaned the current state of things, more so as the poor will be ‘disproportionately impacted’.

”Following from the above, Gen Buhari identified two ills that have characterised the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration as ‘waste and corruption’.

“In that elucidating speech, he successfully proffered workable solutions to pull the country from the brink. You are all aware that the speech is now in the public domain.

”On contemporary national issues, we wish to draw the attention of well-meaning Nigerians to the deceit, squandermania and looting associated with this administration

”It is on record that work started on the East – West Road in 2006, under former President Olusegun Obasanjo. But due to the activities of Niger Delta militants then, work was stopped midway and the initial contractor, Julius Berger left the site.

”In 2009, work was restarted on the road, this time to be handled by three construction firms to hasten its completion by 2011 as anticipated. It is pertinent to note that appropriations were made for the construction in 2009 and 2010. But after Yar’Adua’s death, work stopped on the road and the money set aside was diverted.

”I have gone to this length to illustrate to you that the construction of this road has lingered due to the lack-lustre approach of the Jonathan administration. Their initial promise to complete the road by 2013 never materialised and till today the East-West road is yet to be completed.

“Contrary to the strident efforts of the Jonathan team to assure the people of the Southeast that the Second Niger Bridge has been awarded and now under construction, the truth is that the PDP administration is only deceiving the people.

”If you may remember, President Jonathan anchored his 2011 campaign in the Southeast on the construction of the Second Niger Bridge, but four years down the line, we are now realising that the bridge is still at the drawing board table and may not be realised after all under Jonathan.

    PPP to the rescue

”We recall that the money set aside for the project was channelled into the presidential election of President Jonathan. The main problem with the Second Niger Bridge and which the Jonathan administration has failed to respond to is why public private partnership should be adopted in constructing the bridge at triple the real cost, whereas government is in a position to bear the full cost, more so as the project falls under the social contract between the government and the people.

”If this arrangement is not reversed, and the Federal Government takes full responsibility for the funding, the implication is that the Southeast people will perennially remain at the mercy of the investors for a period not limited to 25 years in the first instance.”

He further said that contrary to claims that Gen Muhammadu Buhari does not have women in the scheme of things, the APC presidential candidate believes women should be given the opportunity to rise and play prominent role in moving the nation forward.

Shehu quoted Buhari as saying: “I will recognise and protect women empowerment and gender equality with special emphasis on economic activities in the rural areas. Women all over the world are playing an ever increasing role in moving their nations forward both in and outside government.

“In keeping with the times, my government will ensure that Nigerian women are given the opportunity to rise and play an even more prominent role in moving our great nation forward.”

He said “from the above quotes, one can easily read the mind of Gen Muhammadu Buhari, at least to show that he is not a male chauvinist and that he has a definite and robust programme for women if elected President”

Speaking on corruption, the APC campaign spokesman said: “Corruption, as many Nigerians will agree is the major hindrance to our national development, and Gen Buhari with a sterling record of fighting corruption will spare no effort in ensuring that Nigerians have value for their commonwealth.

”To underscore the importance which His Excellency, Gen Buhari attaches to the cankerworm known as corruption, permit me to paraphrase a portion of his speech at the recent visit to Chatham House London.

“On corruption, there will be no confusion as to where I stand. Corruption will have no place and the corrupt will not be appointed into my administration.

”First and foremost, we will plug the holes in the budgetary process. Revenue producing entities such as NNPC and Customs and Excise will have one set of books only. Their revenues will be publicly disclosed and regularly audited. The institutions of state dedicated to fighting corruption will be given independence and prosecutorial authority without political interference.

”Openness  in employment will be the norm under a Buhari presidency, unlike the current arrangement where you need a godfather/godmother, and sometimes you need to gratify government officials to get employment. Only recently over 300 members of staff were recruited by the National Universities Commission without due process and transparency.

”Mrs. Buhari, as First Lady will not be in the habit of having agents in MDAs for the purpose of collecting kickbacks and gratifications for her.”

Shehu argued that President Jonathan has consistently failed in his promises to the people of the Southsouth and Southeast where many believed that he has a strong support base.

He said:”Recall that some German partners were to be engaged to build standard airports across the country including Enugu but by along the line. Jonathan discarded the plan. Today, what is being trumpeted at as Enugu International Airport is a shoddy job done through direct labour and at inflated cost.

    Serial failure

”To further demonstrate that President Jonathan has serially failed the Southeast, we want to put it on record that late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had commenced and indeed reached an advanced stage in the dredging of River Niger, and construction of Onitsha seaport.

”Regrettably, this was again truncated by Jonathan as till today, the seaport which is expected to promote economic development in the region and beyond is yet to take off and the dredging stopped.

”In conclusion, we wish to restate Gen Buhari’s total commitment to the peaceful coexistence of all Nigerians, as well as to the growth and nurturing of democracy in our land.

“He is also committed to the peace pact which he co-signed with President Jonathan, and shall indeed use any available forum to impress on his followers on the need for the path of peace at all times.

”And this is in spite of serial violations of the latter by the other side. Above all, Gen Buhari and his administration would practice and promote politics of nationalism, patriotism, character, equity, accountability, religious/ethnic tolerance, morality, justice and fairness and service to humanity.

“It is therefore important that the PDP and its campaigners refrain from throwing invectives at our candidate.”

  • APC leaders deny supporting Kwankwaso presidency

The Kano State chapter of the committee of leaders of the legacy parties, which merged to form the All Progressives Congress (APC), has denied a resolution to support the aspiration of Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso for the presidency next year.

Last week, a report said the state’s elders committee of the APC was backing the governor to contest for the presidency. But the leaders of the defunct parties in a statement said they were not aware of any elders’ committee of the APC in the state.

The statement signed by Alhaji Musa Umar (ACN), Garba Bala of the defunct CPC and Mallam Muktar Kwaru from the defunct ANPP, said the endorsement was “far from the truth.”

It said the two signatories of the purported communiqué were not members of the legacy parties, but members of the Kwankwasiyya group and therefore could not speak for the legacy parties.

  • Oyegun, APC leaders storm Osun Monday

Oyegun, APC leaders storm Osun Monday

As part of the final leg of the preparations for the governorship poll in Osun State, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, and top leaders of the party will from Monday relocate to Osogbo, the state capital

Also, the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) yesterday said it had withdrawn Mr. Oludare Timothy Akinola as its governorship candidate for the poll.

The relocation of APC leaders was contained in a statement in Abuja by the APC National Chairman, Odigie-Oyegun.

The statement said: “This is to inform the general public and millions of our dear members and supporters that as from August 4, the National Secretariat of our great party, the APC, will relocate to Osogbo, Osun State, until after the August 9 gubernatorial election.

“The relocation to Osogbo is in deference to an ancient African proverb which states that rats cannot eat the fish of the man who is awake and watchful. Hence the APC leadership wishes to reassure our millions of members, supporters and compatriots that we shall keep awake to guide and protect our mandate.

“This also serves as notice to all state chairmen of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to attend the final public rally of the APC in Osogbo on August 5 and the subsequent meeting with the National Working Committee on August 6.

“I use this opportunity to salute the courage of the good people of Osun State for their courage and steadfastness in the face of intimidation and militarization of the state.

“I appeal to our dear compatriots in the state to ignore all manner of provocation and turn out massively to vote for Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola to continue his good work and clean government in his second term.

On its part, the PDM in a statement by its National Chairman, Dr. Oluwole Akinwumi, said it had dropped Mr. Oludare Timothy Akinola as its candidate for the governorship poll.

  • Kudos for APC leaders over congress

Kudos for APC leaders over congress

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress of Nigeria (APC) in Lagos State, Abayomi Sutton, has congratulated the party for organising one of the most successful political congresses in the country.

The APC, he said, successfully elected about 9,802 party leaders across the 377 wards in the state in its first ever intra-party elections with over 500, 000 members of the party participating in the exercise on April 5.

Sutton, who lives in the United Kingdom, said the APC made him and several other Nigerians overseas proud.

He said: “The APC has proven that nothing is stronger than internal democracy. Without any bitterness, criticisms and rancour, the party members came together in all the wards, 20 local governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas led the party through the needed foundations.

“For APC, this action coming from the party has shown that the 2015 elections of the party across Nigeria is just a walk through especially as Nigerians are seeking that change that would make the country the place its citizens want to really live.

“Again, we all learnt that the congress was a success because an option A4 was adopted for the exercise. This same option A4, which National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had always campaigned to be adopted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, did the magic for APC. I sincerely congratulate Asiwaju Tinubu, other party leaders and every single member of the Lagos APC and the entire members of the party in the country.”

  • APC leaders meet IBB, Abdulsalami

    APC leaders meet IBB, Abdulsalami

It was a small but symbolic gathering. Party leaders and former heads of state pumping hands and smiling broadly.

All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders took their consultation and membership drive to Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar in Minna, Niger State yesterday.

On the delegation were Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, General Muhammadu Buhari, former House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Bello Masari, former Minister of Works Hassan Lawal, National Woman Leader Mrs. Sharon Ikeaso and leaders of the party in the state.

Arriving Babangida’s Uphill home at about 11:30 am, four leaders of the party (the Chairman, his deputy, Masari, General Buhari and Asiwaju Tinubu) and their host entered into a closed-door meeting which lasted for one hour and 10 minutes before departing to Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar’s residence, which is adjacent, Babangida’s house.

The leaders entered into a closed door meeting with Gen. Abubakar at about 1:03 am. It also lasted for about an hour.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, former Military President Gen. Babangida said the APC leaders, who are mostly his age-long friends and boss, were in his house to discuss how to develop Nigeria and bequeth the younger generations a better legacy.

Said he: “The APC leaders visited me to discuss the welfare of the country, which should be the responsibility of every Nigerian – whether you belong to a party or you do not have a party, you have an assignment assigned to you to protect the integrity of the country.”

Shedding light on the issues discussed, Gen. Babangida said: “The meeting had to do with the welfare, well-being, education, security and economic well-being of the country. Anything that would promote and move the country

  • We’re not jittery over APC leaders’ visit —Rivers PDP

We’re not jittery over APC leaders’ visit —Rivers PDP

The Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says it is now better off with the defection of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying that he had all the while constituted a cog in the wheel of the party’s progress.

The party disclosed this while reacting to Amaechi’s boasting that the PDP was getting jittery over his plan to leave the party for the APC.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media to the State Chairman, Jerry Needam, said rather than being jittery, Governor Amaechi’s last-minute decision to quit the PDP, having been suspended and stripped of the state party leadership, was the best thing that could happen to any group desirous of true democracy and freedom for their people.

“For the entire period Governor Amaechi held sway as the leader of the PDP in the state, it has been one controversy after the other as though we are cursed, with no appreciable impact on the people despite the huge resources that accrue to the state every month,” the statement further noted.

The party, while wishing Amaechi well in his new party, said it was high time Amaechi demonstrated his magic wand which he has always boasted of during elections and see if he will not be defeated even in his bedroom.

“It’s a pity Amaechi has chosen to play the proverbial ingrate who erroneously thought that his detractors were all dead and/or had become his friends as he now sees the APC leaders, and went on to kill his spiritual father only to realise when it was too late that he had shot himself in the leg and was subsequently trapped by his remaining enemies.

“Amaechi should hide his head in shame, having broken the unwholesome record of being the first serving governor to be pursued out of a ruling party to an opposition party. We therefore invite Rivers people to monitor more than ever, before he uses our funds to run APC.

“We pray to see what becomes of him and the APC as we go for subsequent elections in the state to determine who owns the land,” the PDP declared.

The party urged all Rivers people to join it in celebrating the new air of freedom facilitated by the defection of Gov Amaechi to the APC, reassuring of better days ahead as true leaders of the state have successfully stopped the state from total collapse brought about by Amaechi’s dictatorial tendencies.

  • APC leaders woo Nyako, Kwankwaso, Lamido

APC leaders woo Nyako, Kwankwaso, Lamido

The All Progressives Congress (APC) raised the stakes yesterday in its bid for power at the centre in 2015.

Leaders of the opposition party visited three state capitals in the North yesterday – to woo over to the APC the aggrieved governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which is struggling to survive a big internal crisis.

APC Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande led a strong team of party leaders, including Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governors, senators and others to Kano, Dutse and Yola.

They wooed Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako.

They were in Sokoto on Tuesday to attend the inauguration of Sokoto State University. They also met with Governor Aliyu Wamakko.

The four are among the seven PDP governors locked in a fierce battle with the leadership of the party.

They left the party’s last mini-convention to form a parallel executive under Alhaji Kawu Baraje.

Also on the entourage were Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, former Speaker Aminu Bello Masari, Senator George Akume, Alhaji Abdullahi Gwarzo, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Alhaji Musa Gwadabe, Alhaji Kashim Imam, Senator Annie Okonkwo, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and governors- Babatunde Fashola (Lagos State),Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti) and Rochas Okorocha (Imo).

The APC leaders met with Kwakwanso at the Governor’s Office, Kano, before departing for Dutse.

But the PDP, expectedly, frowned at the meetings, abusing the APC.”

Its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, wondered in a statement why the APC leaders were wooing the governors of the PDP they had castigated in the past.

Warning the PDP governors against dumping the ruling party, he said: “Joining the APC is to join in promoting divisions in Nigeria.”

Speaking in Kano, Akande, who lamented the persecution of the seven governors, said they were being intimidated for their commitment to a worthy cause.

He said: “We decided to come to you to solidarise with you because we know you are of great mind; and that is why some of you are being persecuted in your political party.Wherever small minds are in power, great minds are persecuted. So in recognition of this, in this wisdom, the leaders of the APC decided to come and lure you to join the progressive party.”

The APC chairman added: “We are proud to showcase our own party, the APC, as a platform and a soft ground for great minds like you; and for that reason, we decided to come and let you know that we have plenty rooms in APC for great minds. Our coming to Kano has shown us the tremendous transformation that has taken place in Kano metropolis.

“These are the types of things we want governors of APC to be able to do just like the ones in Lagos, Edo, Osun, Ekiti and everywhere and when we see this development in Kano, we are always proud of you. On behalf of my party, the APC, Mr. Governor, we are here as campaigners in politics, which is not about individuals. It is about the unity and progress of Nigeria. We invite you to look favourably to our party.”

Gen. Buhari said the APC leaders were in Kano to woo Kwakwanso, saying that the mission is justifiable. He said: “We are in Kano to lure you into APC and I am also here with my colleagues, and the governors from other states, to convince you firstly, that we feel very uncomfortable about Kano not coming along with us.

“We are here on a tough and ruthless recruitment drive; we are a people-oriented party and our concern is about our people and Nigeria. What APC is fundamentally going to do is to secure and effectively manage this country when we secure power.”

Buhari hailed Kwankwaso for his courage, alertness and determination to succeed, noting that he bounced back to power after he was ousted in a general election.

He said: “Not so many people get the opportunity to correct whatever mistake they think they have made. You were a governor. We voted you out. You quietly went to the Ministry of Defence, and came back and got elected. So, you are a very lucky person. It is not the red cap that gave you the victory; it is the stars. So, in our bid to get Kano back, we enjoin the governor to join us to deliver this country; and by the mercy of God, we shall succeed.”

Okorocha, who spoke on behalf of the APC governors, predicted that in 2015, “victory has been signed and sealed for the APC”.

He said: “ We have come to invite you, our brother, into this movement. APC is not a political party per se; it is a movement; a movement of change. We are people, carefully, selected by God. We’ll assure you as our colleagues that governors in APC are accorded their due respect. I want to assure you that you are coming to a place you rightfully belong.”

Kwankwaso was surprised that the APC leadership could send such a powerful delegation to invite him into the party. He said: “We have listened to you very attentively; we have heard what you said and I feel elated that people of these calibre sat down and decided to visit us for this purpose; this shows that we are important.

“Immediately you leave this place, I will sit down with the stakeholders because this party belongs to all of us. The Kwankwasiyya Movement is not a one-man show. No member of the Kwankwasiyya Movement does it alone. We are working as a team and this team is strong and capable enough to win elections in 2015. By the grace of God, our group will continue to grow from strength to strength.

“If you are expecting me to say yes or no to your offer now, you will not get it because we have to sit down as one family and weigh the challenges; and at the end of the day, we will communicate you through General Buhari.”

Tinubu told reporters after the meeting that the visit was successful. He allayed the fear that the absence of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau meant that all was not well with APC in Kano. He said: “I am not sure that he is available for this meeting, but there is no problem.”

In Dutse, Akande told Lamido to “please come and join the race because you are not where you belong to”.

He added: “Leave the PDP and join the APC where you will have better opportunity to achieve your aims.”

The APC leaders’ visit, Akande said, is not for you as Lamido or four our personal benefit rather for the rescue of the people and the country.”

Tinubu described Lamido as one of those reliable individuals the APC can work with because of his courage and frankness.

“I don’t know how we found you under the heated umbrella and now that the umbrella is tearing, it is time for you to return to where you belong.

“We are here to reconnect with our brother, a long-time friend and political associate with the same mission and objectives. Come and join a team and rescue the country from abuse of power, insincerity and negatives attached to the present administration”.

Lamido described the visit as a family reunion because they were together years back in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and committed to working for the general public.

The governor said “PDP is sick, this journey is a difficult one and will generate lots of issues”. He added: “This is the beginning of the process and I’m ready to move with anyone concerned with the progress and betterment of the common man and country.

He said: “I believe in Nigeria and I’m enthusiastic about the fact that Gen. Buhari of all people came personally to woo me to APC”

Lamido said what is worrisome to him is that Nigerians don’t have that trust and confidence in their leaders any longer. He added that it would not “be out of place if someone will join hands with like minds to restore the lost glory of the nation.”

  • South West APC leaders must beware

South West APC leaders must beware

“People who always want to have their ways at all cost and never provide better arguments but rather want to force their petty ideas on others are anarchists and pocket despots who will ultimately fail’ -AWO, during the Omoboriowo crisis  in Ondo state, exactly 30 years ago (1983).”

Something is afoot in the South West APC and it is guaranteed to negatively affect the party if its leaders will not face up to it and deal squarely with it now that they still can. I am not one to speak from two sides of the mouth as neither my being Ekiti, nor having the rare privilege of being educated at Christ’s School, Ado-Ekiti, will permit it.. I have written previously on this page about the PDP’s plan to encircle the South West in a pincer-like movement, effective 2014, using mostly disgruntled or over ambitious ‘members’ of the progressive camp who, our leaders, unfortunately, believe are beyond reproach. And if care is not taken, these ‘gentlemen’ will, before their very eyes, emerge the Labour Party gubernatorial candidates in their respective states and there would be nothing they can do.

Something tells me this is a well-funded PDP project being coordinated by two Southwest governors, one serving, the other ex. At the recent launch of Prof Ropo Sekoni’s book at the Muson Centre, Lagos, one of these individuals, confessed that much to both Professor Akin Oyebode and myself. And this is where a too trusting Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose name, one of them keeps dropping at the drop of a hat, readily comes in.

Without a scintilla of doubt, but behind his back, I must have used close to a million words defending Tinubu at several fora in the past 10 years, all because I believe in what he represents. And this has nothing to do with my writing for The Nation newspaper. Anyway, The Nation was not established 10 years ago. I have told all who care to listen how, long before he became governor, he had been promoting and extending the frontiers of democracy. I have written about how he mobilised and sent, both Hon Wale Oshun and now, Senator Femi Lanlehin, with funds to a West African country to assist in the campaign of a presidential candidate long before he became governor. Today, hardly does any official event happen in Lagos without representations from Ghana and Sierra-Leone, owing largely to his political reach. And, but for him, nobody knows where exactly Obasanjo would have left Yoruba land. I never cease to pray that the good Lord will continue to lead him aright. Directly on his handling of the removal of Hon Bamidele as Chairman of the Ekiti ACN Caucus in the House of Representatives, an event for which many Nigerians commended the discipline and orderliness in the party, Opeyemi gleefully came back to Ekiti to tell his few followers that Asiwaju merely came to Ekiti to play politics and that he supports his aspirations all the way. Though we know this is what Fela would have called shakara, such talk, unfortunately, emboldens his misguided supporters who, unknown to Asiwaju, have also been assured of federal support in matters involving the police.

Full scale disturbances have therefore occurred each time Ope visited the state with APC members always being at the receiving end because it is also a PDP plan since the Police Affairs Minister, an Ekiti and a wannabe gubernatorial candidate, is on orders to deal with APC members.

In respect of this plan, I recently wrote somewhere as follows: ‘We are inching toward the final denouement. This scenario will soon play out in both Ekiti and Osun States where elections are due next year. Starting innocuously, sleeping agents of the PDP, who are otherwise APC ‘members’, but inexorably destined for the Labour Party will, acting as agent provocateurs, mess up the current peace in the South West. The police, in turn, would thereby get the alibi they need to arrest and detain, indefinitely, targeted leaders of the APC as has happened to the Interim APC Chairman, Mr Jide Awe. Now, the plot has shifted to the governor’s Special Adviser on Security, who usually foils their many evil plans and whose town, Iyin -Ekiti, was the latest of Hon Bamidele’s hot spots, backed by members of the Dr Fasehun wing of the OPC. Reminds one of the new UPN!

The plot is aimed at crippling the APC ahead of the 2014 election. If they succeed in Ekiti, Osun will be next. It is all a strategic bating which is not the brainwave of dunderheads, but a well-choreographed scheme of evil geniuses hell bent on having the South West under their stranglehold again. Indeed, mere writing about them is dangerous enough, but write we must if democracy must survive in this land.

In a private letter to Hon Bamidele this past week, Igede-based Abiola Olufemi affirmed that the legislator had actually started holding nocturnal meetings all over the state long before the Appeal Court decided in favour of Fayemi, all in the hope of contesting against him. He wrote him in 2011:’ You were sending rice and vegetable oil all around the state and preparing the ground for your contest as you thought Fayemi was going to lose at the Appeal Court. But to your amazement, Fayemi became governor and rather than support him, you were too bitter about the senatorial ticket given to Ojudu. That was why you started branding Fayemi a non-performer, bandying about 2006 census figures in order to pillory the governor. I was so miffed that I had to react with an article I titled “Opeyemi Bamidele’s Selective Amnesia”. Rather than change, you granted more than ten interviews within two days, sounding more hysterical than ever. Like many of your concoctions, you claimed that the leadership had not endorsed Fayemi.

For the avoidance of doubt, you have as much right as anyone to aspire to be governor. But I ask: were you truly attacked? In this computer age, social media and the lot, you failed to provide a single photo or video evidence of the attacks. Where are the scars or the wounds? Where are Jaruu’s marks on you? I don’t really like him, but I don’t also think you should demonise him in your attempt to make Fayemi look bad! The latest claim of attack from your camp has its roots in an incident that happened at a party in your hometown of Iyin-Ekiti on Friday, 23 August, 2013. Jaruu was uncharacteristically cool under your boys’ provocation but Niyi Apase who came later with his fellow members of the Gani Adam faction of the OPC couldn’t stomach it when your Fredrick Faseun faction of the OPC attacked him. You saw it all, but never called them to order since it would make a good spin for the tabloid.’

I quoted that letter at some length for the reading public to know the truth about these many ‘attacks’ on Opeyemi. I know, first hand, both in his quest for the Senate and this one, that party leaders sincerely pleaded with Hon Bamidele to take things easy. In the Senate case which he never ceases to claim he won, I know, as a member of the ACN state screening committee, appointed by the National Chairman of the party, that the election was inconclusive as the rerun never took place owing to threats of ‘war’. In the current case, I am equally aware that long before the party leaders came to Ekiti to endorse Fayemi, both Chief Bisi Akande and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu met with the duo and actually believed they had settled it all, but Opeyemi did not do any of the things he promised the party leaders.

In conclusion, I will like to plead with those close to Hon Bamidele to let him know that he needs no alibi to move to another party, if he must, to fulfill his ambition rather than take us back to those rancorous days of the PDP in Ekiti.
