PDP Gov candidate, Ajayi wins polling unit

    By Rasaq Ibrahim, Kiribo

The governorship candidate of  the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Agboola Ajayi has been declared the winner of his polling unit.

Agboola, who voted at his at Apoi Ward II, Unit 004 in Kiribo, Ese Odo council area, polled 194 votes to defeat his main rival, Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress who scored 003 votes.

Agboola with wife arrived at the polling booth at around 10:36 am and permitted to vote before others who were in the queue.

The couple was accredited around, 10: 45am for voting chatted  briefly with voters before leaving the polling unit in a black Jeep.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote, Agboola expressed displeasure over the conduct of the excercise, alleging gross irregularities in the ongoing governorship poll.

He accused the Independent National Electoral Commission and the security agencies of compromising the election in favour of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

Agboola said that the preliminary report from across the 16 local  government area has shown that the election so far was far below the standard, asking the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu to resign for conducting the most corrupt election in Nigeria’s political history.

He described the exercise as not only a sham but also synchronized attempt to murder democratic process, alleging that the stronghold of  PDP chieftains were militarised to intimidate the voters from exercising their franchise.

It took the intervention of armed roving policemen who fired several shits in the air to scare the alleged hoodlums away.

The patrolling policemen were prevailed upon to remain at the unit throughout the sorting and collation of votes.

PDP Gov candidate votes, slams INEC, security agencies

    By Rasaq Ibrahim, Kiribo

The candidate of the People Democratic Party(PDP) in Ondo governorship poll Agboola Ajayi has cast his vote at Apoi Ward II, Unit 004 in Kiribo, Ese Odo local government area.

Agboola with wife arrived at the polling booth around 10:36 am and allowed to vote before others who were in the queue.

The couple was accredited at about 10: 45 am for voting and chatted briefly with voters before leaving the polling unit with his black Jeep.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote, Agboola expressed displeasure over the conduct of the excercise, alleging gross irregularities in the ongoing governorship poll.

He accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies of compromising the election in favour of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Agboola said that the preliminary report from across the 16 local  government areas has shown the election so far was far below the standard, asking the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu to resign for conducting the most corrupt election in Nigeria’s political history.

He described the exercise as not only a sham but also synchronised attempt to murder democratic process, alleging that the stronghold of  PDP chieftains were militarised to intimidate the voters from exercising their franchise.

He said: “If INEC cannot successfully organize election in just one state, then you must know that we are running into anarchy in Nigeria.

“I have been getting reports across the state and it is same, including me , I am a victim here in my unit and I want to say it is deliberate on the part of the REC and the INEC and don’t forget we have said earlier that we don’t trust Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola who is the REC ; she can’t be fair.

“The system is compromised and there are complaints everywhere in the state including vote-buying , BVAS not working and don’t forget the machine is a rigging tools for them. It is a very shameful exercise and I think Nigerians should just call on INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, if he can’t do the job, he should honorably resign because the system is totally compromised, this is sad.

“Under Professor Attahiru Jega as INEC chairman, our electoral process was getting to that international standard but Professor Yakubu has drawn us back , this is sad and Nigerians are not happy.”

On the security situation, the PDP candidate said: ” From my community here it is peaceful but accused the military operatives deployment more men to his area and I would take it up with the brigade commander. They can’t be intimidating the voters. How do you station seven to 10 armed soldiers; we are not at war here !

“On the voters turn out, despite the intimidation, people were willing to vote because they are frustrated already with things in the state and the country.”

He expressed displeasure over the delay he experienced before he could vote due to BVAS malfunction, saying ” The system is not perfect, things are not working and it took more than 10 minutes before the BVAS could accredit me”.

APC Rivers State holds Elective Congresses today

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Rivers State Elective Congresses scheduled for today (Saturday), November 16, 2024, will proceed as planned.

Decision to this effect was announced by the APC National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Muhammad Argungu.

Argungu in a statement on Friday said the ex-parte order in Suit No: PHC/2699/CS/2024 between Peter Ohochukwu & Anor vs. His Excellency, Abdullahi Ganduje & 5 Ors, which initially restrained the APC from conducting the congress, has been vacated.

He said the Rivers State High Court has ruled that there is no order preventing the APC from organizing the Rivers State Elective Congress.

  • History beckons on APC in Ondo

History beckons on APC in Ondo

History is beckoning on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party might be the first political party to win re-election in Ondo State after spending eight years in power since the return to democratic rule.

The outcome of the election is dependent on the majority votes to be secured from 1,793,914 eligible voters by either Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa or Hon Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In 1999, the Alliance for Democracy was in power in Ondo state under the late Adefarati. The party was routed out of power by the PDP in 2003 under the late Dr. Olusegun Agagu.

Agagu won re-election but was sacked in 2008 and the Labour Party came to power under Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

Dr. Mimiko defected to the PDP before the end of his second term but failed to install his successor. The PDP lost the election and the APC came to power under the late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

The APC has been victorious in all elections conducted in the state since the 2020 governorship election. What has worked for the party is the unity of the party.

All odds favoured the APC to secure victory in today’s election. The party is united. It has the power of incumbency and the support of the federal government.

Already, some candidates have stepped down to support Aiyedatiwa. Governor Aiyedatiwa who spoke at an interactive session organised for stakeholders by the Special Engagement Committee of the APC national campaign council, said eight candidates have stepped down for him.

Governor Aiyedatiwa appealed to party supporters to use the remaining hours before the election to intensify the mobilisation drive towards delivering a victory for the party. He urged all members of the party to fully participate in the election with their permanent voter cards.

According to him, “We have only one agenda ahead of us that is to deliver the victory on Saturday because we have campaigned across the state and listened to the plights of the people.

“Let us go back to our communities and continue the work; we must not be complacent, there is still work to be done and we must be ready to finish the work for ultimate victory.

“Just this morning, eight governorship candidates have declared support for us ahead of the election and that should tell us that the people are with us.”

Chairman of the special engagement committee and Governor of Katsina state, Dikko Radda, said the party would be victorious at the polls given the governor’s acceptance by the people

Special Adviser to Governor Aiyedatiwa on Transportation, Hon Olugbenga Omole, has said today’s election would be the first in Ondo State where no opposition parties would be noticed.

Speaking in an interview in Akure, Hon Omole, said Ondo State electorates understood that the current economic hardship was not peculiar to the country.

According to him, “I would not be surprised we will in all the 18 local government. I have been in this game since 1999. This is the first time we are going for a gubernatorial election and we didn’t notice opposition in this state.

“Everywhere is calm. Not that we expected to see crisis but we know how it is. The election is for the APC. We are not seeing opposition in terms of their engagement with the people

“We are not seeing the PDP but we are not taking that for granted. We are working day and night. In the 203 wards, we are holding regular wards and campaigning. We don’t see other parties.

“Ondo state people are enlightened. They love their Governor. They know it is not Tinubu that removes the subsidy. In the 2023 budget, there was no provision for subsidy payment. It takes a leader like Asiwaju who has the political wherewithal to make such a pronouncement that the subsidy is gone. Subsidy was gone before May 29.

“Tinubu is a transformational leader. When you want to turn the situation of a country positively, it does not happen overnight. In a few months, we will begin to see the positive impact of the Tinubu-led government. We have held elections in this country like in Edo but the APC won.

“In Ondo, all the APC stakeholders are with Aiyedatiwa. The only Senator who has not joined the campaign train is Senator Jimoh Ibrahim. You saw what he did. All the Senators, House of Representatives Members and 22 House of Assembly members are supporting the Governor. I won’t be surprised that the APC and the Governor will carry the day.”

The PDP is banking on the populace to vent its anger on the APC due to economic hardship in the country. The strength of the party was weakened by the defection of many of its leaders to the APC across the three senatorial districts. A large turnout of voters across the state would sway votes to the PDP.

Besides the PDP, candidates of other political parties appeared to stand no chance at the polls. The Labour Party which seemed to be the third force is hit by internal strife.

With 72 hours to the polls, news hit social media that the Court of Appeal sacked Chief Sola Ebiseni and Dayo Awude as governorship and deputy governorship candidates of the Party.

But the Director of Legal Services of the Labour Party Campaign Organisation, Ojo Tosin Leramo, said Chief Ebiseni and Hon Awude remained the party’s Governorship and Deputy Governorship candidates for Saturday’s governorship election.

He said the Appeal Court did not sit on any appeal on the validity of the party’s candidates. Ojo said the Appellant did not challenge the candidacy of Ebiseni at the lower court saying ‘an Appeal is a re-hearing of the case at the lower court.’

Ondo 2024: PDP, APC clash on peace accord violation

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) are at each others’ throat on peace accord violation.

While the PDP alleged that APC members in Idanre unleashed terror on prominent PDP members, injuring at least seven people who remain critically injured at the State General Hospital in Akure, the state capital, the APC countered, saying the opposition party was out to smear the good image of the ruling party.

The Chairman of the PDP Campaign Council, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, disclosed this during a press briefing in Akure, stating that no arrests have been made while the perpetrators remain at large.

Olafeso claimed that the attack by thugs loyal to the APC in Idanre injured seven PDP members, including a party leader in the area, Otunba Olowoniyi Akinlemimu.

He reported that Akinlemimu, who was seriously injured, remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the State Specialists Hospital in Akure, while others are still receiving treatment after bullets were removed from their bodies.

Olafeso also raised an alarm over an alleged plan by a top APC member to mobilize paramilitary personnel to influence the election in favor of the Condemning any attempts by the ruling APC to undermine a peaceful election, Olafeso stated that the PDP would resist any violation of the peace accord signed by all parties.

In response, the APC Director of Publicity, Steve Otaloro, denied the allegations regarding threats to a peaceful election, asserting that the party is focused on winning the election.

In a statement, Otaloro said, “The APC rejects any act of violence, especially in an election we are poised to win, given the overwhelming support our candidate, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has received.

“The allegation that an APC member engaged in thuggery to attack PDP members in Idanre is a fabricated story intended to tarnish our party’s image.

“We also deny any involvement of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in mobilizing officers from the Nigeria Immigration Service, Customs, and Nigeria Correctional Service for the Ondo election. These agencies are not legally mandated to participate in election matters.

“The APC remains committed to a free, fair, and credible election. We urge the PDP to do the same and respect the democratic process. The people of Ondo State deserve better than baseless allegations and fear-mongering.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state have differed over an alleged plot to compromise Saturday’s governorship election.

Ondo APC Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, alleged that the ruling party has submitted a list of two APC members per polling unit to INEC to serve as Presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers. He said those whose names were submitted did not attend training of ad-hoc staff by INEC.

A statement by the spokesman for the Ondo PDP, Kennedy Peretei, said the APC banked on compromising the election at all costs, “having failed tragically to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.”

“The entire world is watching and this move by Adetimehin has vindicated our consistent call for the redeployment of Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, who has Adetimehin’s backing in this evil.

“Our party wishes to admonish all actors to play according to the rule. The entire world is watching, and nobody can hide behind one finger.”

Ondo APC spokesman, Alex Kalejaiye, said the party has no reason to contemplate compromising the election having worked for the people.

Kalejaiye stated that the ruling party was implementing numerous measures to improve the conditions of living of the people.

He said: “We have campaigned across the 18 local government areas, and we are prepared. We have appealed to the people, and they have shown understanding and a willingness to support the party. Therefore, we have no reason to even consider compromising the election; it is simply not true. This is just one of those fabrications from the PDP.

“There is no reason to do that. Our strategy is to campaign. We are working with the people; we have engaged every segment of society. Our focus is on improving the lives of those who are living in challenging conditions. Many projects are underway in the interest of the state’s economic and physical transformation. So, we will continue to appeal to the people.

“Tomorrow, we will hold our grand finale rally, gathering everyone together, and we will send the same message of continuity. However, we will not go to the extent of doing anything unconstitutional just to win an election.

“We have done the work we set out to do, and we are confident that the people are with us. There is no reason to take any improper actions to secure a victory.”
