Adamawa APC denies suspension of ex-governorship candidate Binani

The Adamawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has refuted claims that its 2023 governorship candidate, Senator Aishatu Binani, has been suspended.

In a press release issued on Thursday evening, the state leadership labelled the story, allegedly spread by the Yola South Local Government chapter, as fake and mischievous.

The state leadership, represented by the Publicity Secretary Mohammed Abdullahi, stated that the allegations were fabricated by individuals unhappy with the efforts of party leaders Mall Nuhu Ribadu (NSA) and Comrade Mustapha Salihu (National Vice Chairman North East) to resolve internal issues and unite the party.

The statement confirmed that Yola South Local Government Area had not suspended Senator Binani, rendering the story false. The state leadership, under Chairman Barr Idris Shuaibu, affirmed that Senator Binani remains a bona fide member and a key stakeholder of the party.

The National Vice Chairman North East, Mustapha Salihu, has called for a discreet investigation to identify and discipline those responsible for spreading the false information.

  • How APC, PDP scrambled for votes in Ondo

How APC, PDP scrambled for votes in Ondo

Last weekend’s off-cycle governorship in Ondo State has been won and lost. The contest for votes was fierce in some places such as Idanre Local Government Area, while the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had a smooth sail in other areas, particularly Ondo North Senatorial District. Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI, who monitored the election, reports

The drive from the Ondo State capital, Akure to Idanre, located at the foot of the Idanre Hills, a cluster of hills, lasted about 45 minutes. As the car approached the outskirts of the town, extensive rock formations loomed on the horizon; revealing a breathtaking landscape.

Nature has sufficiently endowed the town and its environs. The delightful natural landscapes have earned it a place on the global tourist map, following its listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Tentative List) on October 8, 2007.

Idanre, the headquarters of the Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State, is made up of three localities: Atosin, Alade, and Odode or Ode Idanre. The major township has more land area and population.

Those familiar with Ondo State politics predicted before penultimate Saturday’s governorship election that Idanre, which had hitherto been a stronghold of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was going to be a battleground for the two major parties, the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC). This was against its performance in previous elections in the area. Besides, the PDP deputy governorship candidate in the election, Festus Akingbaso hails from Alade-Idanre, one of the two smaller suburbs of the town. Akingbaso currently represents the Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency at the National Assembly. He was expected to deliver the local government for his party.

Similarly, the APC was also counting on its chairman, Ade Adetimehin who equally hails from the council area to swing the victory in favour of the party. It was evident last Saturday that the election was keenly contested in the council area. The APC defeated the main opposition party by scoring 9114 votes. The PDP trailed closely behind with 8940 votes.

There was a significant improvement in logistics management on the part of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) for the off-cycle governorship election, with the early arrival of polling officials to their duty posts. By 7.30 am, almost every polling station in the area was already a beehive of activities. INEC officials were protected by at least four policemen per unit. The presence of security operatives who set checkpoints at strategic areas in the town gave people the confidence to come out and vote.

By 8:30 a.m., many polling units had commenced accreditation and voting. Residents queued up patiently waiting for their turn to be accredited. The election process appeared relatively orderly and peaceful, demonstrating the residents’ determination to choose their governor for the next four years.

However, there were complaints in some units about the slow pace of accreditation. This was attributed to the operation of the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS), the device used to authenticate voter’s identity. At one of such units, a prospective voter, Osedele Olaniyan was complaining loudly that the INEC ad-hoc officials should do something to ensure that some of those who turned out to vote are not disenfranchised.

He told our reporter: “We discovered that the woman saddled with the responsibility of handling the device is not doing it well and the youth corper is more familiar with the operations of the device. But, for inexplicable reasons, they do not want to accede to our requests for him to take over. We are making this request because of people queuing up in the sun. Otherwise, this unit is very peaceful; there is no problem.”

The election was characterised by vote buying. The two major political parties were said to have offered at least N10,000 per voter to those who voted for them. Though cash did not exchange hands openly, some people were grumbling openly, in cases where some parties offered them less than what other parties gave their supporters.

However, at Polling Unit 10, Ward 6, Irowo-Idanre, one voter protested openly that he would not accept cash to vote against his conscience. Nevertheless, he refused to speak to our reporter after he voted.

The competition for votes was particularly intense at Polling Unit 1, Ward 7, Isalu-Idanre, where Senator Ayo Akinyelure voted. The former federal lawmaker represented the Ondo Central Senatorial District from 2011 to 2015 on the Labour Party (LP) and again from 2019 to 2023 on the platform of the PDP. Attempts by some residents to canvass for votes on the queue at the unit, which has 887 registered voters, caused quite a stir, with PDP Collation Agent, Idowu Ademoye insisting that it should be discontinued because the period for the campaign had elapsed. He said: “We are imploring them to stop; the time for it has elapsed. Otherwise, it may lead to commotion.”

Akinyelure, now a card-carrying member of the APC, could not deliver the unit for his new party. According to results declared at the unit, the PDP scored 119 votes, while the APC secured 65 votes. Similarly, at the Polling Unit 2, Ward 7, next to the senator’s, the PDP also won with 105 votes, while the APC scored 54 votes.

The atmosphere during the sorting and counting of votes at Akingbaso’s unit is also worth mentioning. Based on the information made available by supporters of the PDP deputy governorship candidate, the process took place amidst apprehension and fear of being attacked by supporters of the ruling party. This was predicated on reports of ballot boxes being snatched at neighbouring communities in the local government. The PDP supporters at the unit said the area had been surrounded by thugs who were determined to cart away the unit’s ballot box. It took the intervention of policemen on patrol to calm frailed nerves. The roving policemen came to the unit and fired gunshots into the air in an attempt to scare off the suspected hoodlums who were believed to be hiding in the bushes in the neighbourhood.

The running mate to Agboola Ajayi had expressed fears after voting at about 8.30 am over what he described as the resolve of the ruling party to compromise the election. He had accused the APC of sending thugs to disrupt the process in several polling units in other neighbourhoods in Idanre. He told our reporter: “At the moment, it is too early to conclude. Based on what is happening here, the process is proceeding normally, apart from the BVAS which is working very slowly. However, I am getting reports from other neighbourhoods that suggest that things are not going well because of the activities of hooligans that the APC has been sending to disrupt the process.”

Akingbaso said six persons were shot by thugs three days before the election and that the incident was reported to the Ondo State Commissioner of Police. He eventually delivered the unit for the party with a landslide victory, scoring 187 votes. The APC secured 46 votes at the unit.

Contrary to claims by the PDP running mate, some elderly residents of Idanre hailed the conduct of the election in the town, saying it was more peaceful, compared to that of four years ago. For instance, Olubayode Agballa, 66, said people came out happily this time to exercise their franchise, unlike four years ago “when thugs came to disrupt the process and it discouraged many people from coming out to vote”. Agballa who spoke to our reporter in Yoruba added: “It was only the thugs and their associates that cast the votes that were counted at the end of the day; others were driven away from the polling arena.”

Similarly, Femi Akinseye, 54, equally praised the conduct of the election. Akinseye who is wheelchair-bound, however, indicated that the turnout was not as much as that of four years ago when the late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu secured his second term mandate. But insists: “It must be because new units were created and other residents must have been moved to the new units. We used to have 11 units in our ward; now it has been increased to 19.”

  • Ondo’s governorship victory was free of external influence, says APC Ganduje

Ondo’s governorship victory was free of external influence, says APC Ganduje

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has affirmed that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s victory in the Ondo State governorship election was achieved without interference from the presidency or any external forces.

Ganduje made this statement on Wednesday at the APC national secretariat in Abuja while receiving Aiyedatiwa and his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presented them with their certificates of return.

The APC Chairman in Ondo state also declared that the party’s resounding victory in the state marked the political demise of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Expressing his joy, Ganduje highlighted that the party’s triumph in 202 out of 203 wards demonstrated its overwhelming acceptance by the people of Ondo state.

“This must be an issue that was embraced by all. You enjoyed the support of the electorates in the state. We have to congratulate you on this landslide victory. I know Ondo people are progressives which was why they will cooperate with you,” he stated while felicitating with Aiyedatiwa and his Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami, and party chieftains from Ondo state.

Ganduje said Aiyedatiwa’s victory would not have been made possible but for the eventual unity of purpose and harmonious relationship amongst party chieftains in the state.

The chairman who then expressed optimism that the party would sustain its winning streak after the end of Aiyedatiwa’s tenure in office, advised the governor to consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor, Late Rotimi Akeredolu.

He also enjoined Aiyedatiwa to ensure the even spread of developmental projects and avoid falling into the trap of abandonment of projects in the state.

Expressing gratitude to the party leadership and electorates in the state for his victory at the polls, Gov. Aiyedatiwa assured the people of his state that his victory has placed a burden of service on him.

Adducing the victory recorded by the APC in Ondo and Edo states to Ganduje’s track record of mobilisations, and strategic planning as a politician of repute in the country, the governor said that the party was set to win Osun State.

He said: “I cannot but come here to appreciate party the platform that gave me the opportunity to run the race. Come here to stop over to thank you. It’s not a case of being disrespectful not to present my certificate of return to you, but to wait for the return of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The people of Ondo state knew who they wanted and voted for integrity, continuity, and good leadership that we represent with the renewed hope agenda of Mr. President.

“That was what happened when we attained a feat never achieved before. We won in every local government in the state. With the election, the Ondo people spoke clearly and loudly that they voted for APC represented by myself.

“We served within the last 10 months and people have seen the way to go. We made promises and with the massive votes the people gave to us, they have placed a burden on us to do more than what did in the last 10 months. After we end our service, the APC will take over from us again to ensure the name of our party will be intact.”

Earlier the State Chairman of APC, Engr. Ade Adetimehin said the outcome of the November 16 governorship election in the state has finally nailed the coffin of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

“We have delivered as you directed. The delivery is so large that we broke the record in the state. Since the inception of democratic elections in Ondo State, no Governorship candidate ever won in all the 18 local government areas of the state.

“This shows that our party is loved by the people of the state. Ours is a progressive state. Our people love our national leader, President Bola Tinubu and we believe in the leadership of our governor, Hon. Lucky Orimsan Aiyedatiwa.”

The chairman then assured the national leadership that, “I want to assure you that we will not disappoint you. We will strengthen the party and make it the largest in the state because we have finally killed PDP in Ondo State.

“Before the election, a large shrunk of PDP leadership defected to APC. The outcome of the election has shown the whole world that there is no PDP in Ondo State

APC will win more states in future, says party chieftain

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has said the party’s victory in last Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State was an indication that more states, especially those controlled by opposition parties, would be won by APC in future.

Oyintiloye, a member of the APC National Campaign Stakeholders Engagement Committee for the election, said this while reacting to the party’s victory in Ondo governorship poll.

He said with the overwhelming support and votes given to the party and its candidate, Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa, by the electorate, states being controlled by the opposition should be prepared for massive defeat during their elections.

Oyintiloye said the massive votes of 366,781 secured by the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, as against 117,845 by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, was a good indication, pointing towards APC’s victory in the next round of off-cycle elections in other states.

Adeleke kicks over Ganduje’s comment on APC plots to take over Osun, Oyo

Osun state governor, Ademola Adeleke, has criticised the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, for his comments regarding the party’s intentions to take over Osun and Oyo states following its gubernatorial victory in Ondo state.

The Nation reports that after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Lucky Aiyedatiwa the winner of the Ondo gubernatorial election, Ganduje announced that efforts to capture Oyo and Osun states, which are currently controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had begun.

In his response, Adeleke argued that Ganduje’s statement was intended to destabilise the southwest region and incite conflict.

Through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke stated on Monday, asserting that the anti-democratic comments made by the APC leader are in stark contrast to the democratic principles upheld by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“As a well-read politician, one would have expected Dr Ganduje to know that electoral contests depend mostly on local indexes and factors and that what obtains in Edo and Ondo are surely different from political facts on the ground in Osun state.

“Local permutations, grievances, and interests dictate how people vote rather than superimposed force, the spokesperson noted, citing the failure of the APC leader to win the Kano state governorship race for his party.”

He mocked Ganduje for losing Kano State to the Kwankwasiyya group, which defeated his faction after he governed the state for eight years.

“Osun factors which enthroned Governor Adeleke would not resist any attempt to disrespect the will of Osun people in 2026.

“If Dr Ganduje truly loves Mr President, why is he pushing to destabilize the president’s home zone through open threats to violate electoral law and deny the electorate their rights to vote and be voted for.”

APC: Agitation for Osun West governor begins

There is intense clamour for the choice of the next governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State from the West Senatorial District, it was learnt yesterday.

Although the former governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, who is Minister of Blue Economy, has the right of first refusal, party stakeholders are disposed to the zoning of the slot to Osun West, where the current Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor, Ademola Adeleke, hails from, if the minister is not runing.

Since the creation of the state, apart from the first civilian governor, the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, no one from Osun West has governed the state until Senator Ademola Adeleke came in 2022.

Osun Central District hss produded  Chief Bisi Akande four years, Gen. Olagundoye Oyinlola for seven years and Oyetola four years, making 15 years.

Also, Osun East has Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who was in the saddle for eight years.

An APC source said: “Already, some APC faithful are also agitating to have a candidate from Osun West slug it out with the incumbent to have a balanced contest in 2026.”

A chieftain, Oluomo Sunday Akere, disclosed that the party would zone its governorship ticket to only the West Senatorial District if former Governor Gboyega Oyetola refused to run for another term.

Akere who served as Commissioner for Information under the administration of Rauf Aregbesola in the state said the district will be the party’s focus once the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy refused to run, since he has the right of first refusal to run for another term as Governor of the State.

Akere, a Special Adviser to then Governor Oyetola on Political Affairs, while speaking with journalists in Osogbo on Sunday, stated that the party has credible personalities across the three senatorial districts who will deliver victory for it in 2026 but for fairness the party focus on Osun-West senatorial district for our candidates.

According to him, all the political bigwigs from the district are eminently qualified to pick the parties ticket and deliver victory against the incumbent Governor, hence, the party would not have problem zoning its ticket there.

“I need to quickly let you know that the APC is a party with discipline and tradition not only here in Osun but the entire nation. So, we realise fully that former Governor Gboyega Oyetola has the right of first refusal for the governorship ticket for 2026 and that decision is entirely his to take.

“If the now Minister of Marine and Blue Economy decided not to run, then our party would focus on Osun-West senatorial district for a candidate.

“You should also understand that the APC in Osun State today has credible personalities across the three senatorial districts that can pick its ticket and deliver victory come 2026 against Governor Ademola Adeleke, that is a certainty.

“But for fairness, the APC will focus more on the West senatorial district for its candidate. I am not going to mention anyone but you are all aware that every major politician in the district is academically, psychologically and morally qualified to wrestle power from Governor Adeleke in 2026”.

“Adeleke has wasted the state resources on frivolities, he hardly spent three weeks in the state, he focus more on attending parties in and outside the state on the state bills.

“And important state matters that calls for attention is always treated with levity. Can you imagine an indegene of the state the Late Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja being given a State burial where the President and Commander in Chief Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu led the entire paraphernalia of the Nigerian nation only for the Governor to be nowhere to be found. All these reckless kick and start attendance to state affairs must end by 2026 God helping us”.

Ondo victory: APC will remain in power for a long time – Ganduje

The national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has predicted that the party’s growing acceptance in the country is an indication that it will be in power for a long time.

Ganduje’s prediction was contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Sunday in Abuja, while reacting to the re-election of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo state.

The elated APC national chairman said the outcome of the elections in Edo and Ondo States was an indication that Nigerians have embraced the ruling party.

“Recent victories by the party in Edo and Ondo States were not a fluke but an attestation that Nigerians have embraced the APC as their party, assuring that the party will remain in power for a very long time.”

The Chairman noted that Aiyedatiwa’s remarkable success last weekend was a testament to the trust and confidence the people of Ondo State have in his vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to their well-being.

He added: “Ayedatiwa’s victory is not just a win for the APC but a triumph for democracy and the enduring will of the people.”

Ganduje said the election was a clear reflection of the collective aspirations of the good people of the state, who have chosen continuity, progress, and development over retrogression.
