  • Delta North APC reaffirms support for Omo-Agege, seeks post-election review

Delta North APC reaffirms support for Omo-Agege, seeks post-election review

Delta North All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders have reaffirmed support for Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, urging unity under his leadership to build on the 2023 general election achievements.

This commitment comes as the Delta All APC sets its sights on claiming the governorship in the 2027 elections.

At a recent public hearing of the Secretariat Subcommittee of the Olorogun O’tega Emerhor-led Reconciliation Committee for Delta North at the Maryam Babangida Centre in Asaba, stakeholders presented memorandums advocating for party unity and focus under Omo-Agege’s leadership.

By reaffirming their support for Omo-Agege, Delta North APC leaders demonstrated determination to reclaim the governorship and strengthen the party’s presence in the state.

Notable stakeholders, including Barr. Ambrose Egwunatum (Ukwuani LGA), Mr. Churchill Edem (APC Chairman, Ukwuani LGA), Ogbueshi Kris Oputa (APC Chairman, Ndokwa East LGA), and Chief Gregory Dike Onah (APC Chairman, Ndokwa West LGA), Hon. Dr. Olisa Imegwu (former Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly), Justice Azuka Odanike, Tony Ndanenu, Chief Dennis Okoh, Kingsley Saliye, Mrs. Omolara Eke, and Onotu Henry Okechukwu, emphasized the need to strengthen the party’s existing structure and make it more formidable.

They also called for a thorough postmortem analysis of the 2023 governorship election to identify areas of improvement. The stakeholders further urged the party leadership to sanction members involved in anti-party activities, stressing that discipline is crucial for the party’s success in future elections.

The APC’s renewed commitment is significant, given the party’s performance in the 2023 elections. Although the PDP won the governorship, the APC made gains in the senatorial, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly elections.

Chief Kris Oputa, APC Chairman for Ndokwa East LGA, emphasised: “The party boasts a solid foundation in this region,” and expressed confidence in future electoral successes, citing Senator Omo-Agege and Senator Peter Nwaoboshi’s role in establishing the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Ndokwa.

Chief Dennis Okoh reflected on the 2023 governorship election, saying, “Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Hon. Friday Osanebi’s tireless campaigns would have secured our victory, but for acts of betrayal and other factors.” He condemned party members’ betrayal and stressed the need for discipline. “Let’s identify and discipline the moles among us,” he urged. “How can a leader nominate supporters for appointments in the opposing Sheriff government?” Okoh asked, highlighting the need for loyalty.

High Chief Gregory Onah, Chairman of Ndokwa West LGA, is optimistic about the APC’s future prospects, thanks to the foundation laid by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Senator Peter Nwaoboshi. Their efforts have positioned the APC as a strong contender in upcoming elections.

“For us in Ndokwa Nation, we are glad that through their excellent representation and particularly the establishment of the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Ndokwa land, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Senator Peter Nwaoboshi have made our work very easy, he said.

Kingsley Saliye, another leader from Ndokwa West LGA, raised concerns about the party’s loss in the last election, suggesting internal sabotage as a possible cause. He advocated for a thorough review of the 2023 election and encouraged leaders to collaborate with Omo-Agege and Nwaoboshi to fortify the party’s presence in Delta North.

Rt. Hon. Dr. Olisa Imegwu, a respected APC chieftain from Ndokwa East and former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, voiced his discontent with the ongoing neglect of the Ndokwa nation by successive APC federal governments. He highlighted Senator Ovie Omo-Agege’s exceptional efforts in bringing development and empowerment to Ndokwa through his Senate office.

However, Imegwu criticized the Minister for Aviation and Airspace Development for failing to engage with the Ndokwa people, disregarding their needs despite serving under Presidents Buhari and Tinubu. “It’s alarming that the Minister seeks party leadership without connecting with the people,” Imegwu emphasized, urging Delta’s political appointees to positively impact APC members in the state.

Chief Jerry Nkeweshe, a prominent APC chieftain from Aniocha North Local Government Area, condemned the actions of certain party leaders in Delta North who allegedly undermined the party during the 2023 governorship election. He advocated for sanctions against these leaders to prevent future anti-party activities.

Specifically, Nkeweshe cited the cases of a former Delta State House of Assembly speaker and a former Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) chairman, who allegedly worked against the party due to grievances against Senator Omo-Agege.

Nkeweshe alleged that the former NDDC chairman distributed dollars to influence voters against the APC during the governorship election, until his supporters chased them away from the polling units. Furthermore, he claimed that the former speaker, who received funds for the elections in Delta North, failed to show up until election day morning, and the funds were not utilized.

Chief Nkeweshe also revealed that the then-Governor of Delta State and Senator Ned Nwoko consulted with the former speaker in their respective homes, while he was working tirelessly to deliver the party’s victory. “Without my effort, we wouldn’t have won my ward,” he emphasized, calling for sanctions against party leaders who worked against the party.

Hon. Promise Ogumu, a former Ika North East House of Assembly Aspirant, echoed Nkeweshe’s sentiments, stressing the importance of enforcing discipline within the party and holding accountable those who engage in anti-party activities. Ogumu commended Senator Omo-Agege’s efforts in the last election and urged the party to build on the foundation laid during the 2023 polls.

A petition signed By Michael Ukasare, Esq. (Delta Central), Ambrose O. Egwunatum, Esq. (Delta North) Gabriel O. Yabaka, Esq (Delta South), presented by Barr. Egwunatum questioned the legitimacy of the Reconciliation Committee led by Olorogun Otega Emerhor, arguing that it lacked a clear mandate. They called for a comprehensive review of the 2023 governorship election instead of rushing into reconciliation.

The petitioners emphasized that a post-mortem analysis is essential for the party’s success in future elections. They noted that Senator Omo-Agege’s leadership had brought unprecedented successes to the Delta APC and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the party to victory in 2027.

According to them, “A thorough post-mortem analysis is crucial for redemption and party success. We expect the Committee to consider our concerns, wind up its activities and recommend to the party to set up a post-mortem committee to unravel why we lost an election we should have won.

“Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was well positioned to clinch victory at that election for the Party in Delta State. The successes recorded under his leadership of the Delta State APC are unprecedented. We are yet to see any viable alternative to his strategic leadership of the party as it was under his guidance, the party experienced significant milestones.” They urged the party to build on the foundation laid during the 2023 polls.

Elder Godsday Orubebe, while addressing journalists after the meeting, corroborated the positions of the different speakers, noting that the party worked very hard for victory in the 2023 governorship election and that minor and avoidable mistakes prevented the party from taking over Delta for APC.

Orubebe further explained that the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate had a better vision and plans to transform Delta’s fortunes. With the current reconciliation efforts aiming to unify aggrieved members and leaders, he is optimistic that the APC will gain power in the next elections.

He said: “They tried to bend us to stay in their party , offering millions of naira in the last few days but I resisted them because I am for the masses and the masses are suffering the effect of bad governance in Ondo State.

“What is the essence of me taking their money and all my supporters, thousands of them continue to live in poverty and hunger. I won’t go in such direction. APC lashes Yiaga Africa for ‘subjective report’ on Edo poll

    • U.S., NBA hail ‘peaceful election’
    • Police arrest six, recover weapons, voter cards

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday chided Yiaga Africa, an accredited election monitoring observer group, for its “subjective” report on the Edo State governorship election.

The ruling party berated the group for “second-guessing” the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the election results.

APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said in a statement that Yiaga Africa attempted to usurp the statutory function of INEC as the agency responsible for the conduct of election and declaration of result.

Yesterday, the United States commended the peaceful conduct of poll, urging Nigerians to sustain the tempo of electoral sanitisation.

Also, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) said the poll was orderly despite the logistic challenges and isolated cases of vote buying.

The NBA observer group, in its report, lauded the security agencies for their professional conduct during the election.

The Oba of Benin, Ewuare III, ordered a three day fasting in his kingdom to thank God for a peaceful election and to sustain the prevailing harmony.

Basking in the euphoria of victory for his party, Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged the governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to be magnanimous in victory.

Edo PDP Campaign Council Deputy Director-General Emmanuel Odigie wept over the defeat of the party at the poll.

Yesterday, the police arrested six persons and recovered four weapons and 58 voter’s cards from the suspects.

Yiaga Africa is wrong, says APC

Morka accused Yiaga Africa of overreaching its election observer mission and constituting itself into a “parallel agency” for declaring election results.

Yiaga Africa had reported “widespread manipulation of results” and discrepancies between its estimates and INEC’s official figures.

Faulting the group, Morka said: “Alleging that results were manipulated without hard facts and figures, but based on some statistical guess work is a clear disservice to the electoral process.

“Yiaga Africa’s report is a travesty, replete with methodological flaws, politicized observations, inconsistencies, inaccuracies, and called its credibility into question.”

He added: “Election observer missions are not election management agencies and cannot usurp INEC’s statutory authority as the sole election management body in Nigeria. Doing so would constitute a clear breach of the Electoral Act and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“While election observer missions, like Yiaga Africa, are at liberty to share their observations about the election process with INEC and the general public, however, declaring election result or second guessing result declared by INEC in performance of its statutory duties, falls beyond their observation mandate.

“Declaring or second-guessing the Edo state gubernatorial result based on unsubstantiated, unverified, highly questionable statistical parameters created by Yiaga Africa for Yiaga Africa is designed to create unnecessary confusion and the appearance of a parallel election process.”

The party urged the observer group “to refrain from enlisting itself in the season’s annals of infamy, alongside the likes of Governor Godwin Obaseki and his illegal and sinister midnight invasion of INEC’s offices, and Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s illegal declaration of bogus election result.

“The election’s outcome is an unequivocal rejection of the Obaseki administration’s bad governance and endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visionary policies, which are transforming Nigeria’s economic landscape, strengthening security, and promoting good governance.”

Morka thanked President Tinubu for ensuring a level playing field, INEC for its professionalism, and law enforcement agencies for their diligence.

He said: “By their votes, the good people of Edo State were loud and clear in their choice of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the next Governor to lead the state into a new era of peace, unity, people-centered development and prosperity for all.

“Any disputes, contestations or questions about the election may now be submitted to the courts for adjudication in line with electoral and constitutional norms and recourse mechanisms.”

    US hails peaceful poll

United States Ambassador to Nigeria Richard Mills Jr. reaffirmed US’s commitment to free, fair, transparent, and credible elections in Nigeria.

His statement reads: “The U.S. Mission in Nigeria commends the people and reiterates calls for calm, following the announcement of results.

“We commend Governor Obaseki’s appeal for peace and urge all stakeholders, including INEC, to support established electoral processes and respect legal procedures to challenge results.

“Transparency and due process are crucial to maintaining public confidence in any democratic system.

“The United States reaffirms our commitment to supporting free, fair, transparent, and credible elections in Nigeria and will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

    Poll was orderly, says NBA

NBA Observer Group Leader Mrs. Bolatumi Animashaun, and Secretary, Mr. Mobolaji Ojibara, said the conduct of the poll was orderly.

However, they pointed out in their report that there were logistic problems, lack of prompt deployment of polling personnel, poor preparations by INEC in some areas and some technical challenges.

The team lauded the security agencies for offering security on poll day.

The team said “voters in most polling units conducted themselves in an orderly and respectful manner.”

It added: “The low voter turnout, influence of money, and delays in the distribution of election materials were notable concerns. However, the conduct of voters, election officials, and security personnel was commendable, contributing to a largely peaceful election process.

“There is a need for intensified voter education campaigns aimed at restoring public trust in the electoral process and encouraging greater voter participation, especially among women and youth.

“Stronger measures must be implemented to prevent political parties from using money to influence voters. This includes stricter monitoring at polling units and more transparent processes to safeguard the integrity of the electoral system.”

    Odigie laments defeat

Odigie, who broke down in tears, lamented the defeat of the PDP by APC.

Odigi, who spoke on television, recounted a heart-wrenching encounter with four women at the airport before the election.

According to him, the women, two from Houston and two from Atlanta, had traveled to Nigeria to vote for the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, for the first time, adding that they mobilised  their family and friends to do the same.

He said: “What happened to the will of the people? What happens to voting, competence, and the betterment of society?”

Police Arrest six, recover four Weapons, 58 Voters cards

The Police said six persons were arrested for various electoral offences during the poll.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police in-charge of the election, Frank Mba, told reporters in Benin.

He said: “We have made a total of six arrests, and we expect this number to increase as we expand our investigations.”

APC slams Yiaga Africa over Edo election report

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has slammed Yiaga Africa, an accredited election monitoring observer group at the just concluded Edo State governorship election for allegedly “second-guessing” the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the election results.

The governing party maintained that the observer group cannot usurp the statutory function of INEC for the conduct and declaration of the results of the election.

APC national publicity secretary, Felix Morka, in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, September 24, accused Yiaga Africa of overreaching its election observer mission and constituting itself into a “parallel agency” for declaring election results.

Yiaga Africa had reported “widespread manipulation of results” and discrepancies between its estimates and INEC’s official figures.

Faulting Yiaga Africa, the ruling party said: “Alleging that results were manipulated without hard facts and figures but based on some statistical guesswork is a clear disservice to the electoral process. Edo victory: APC set to retain Ondo, unseat APGA in Anambra – Ganduje

The national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, declared on Monday, September 23, that following the party’s victory in Edo state, the party is poised to retain the Ondo governorship seat in November.

Speaking at the APC national secretariat in Abuja, Ganduje celebrated the victory of Senator Monday Okpebholo with members of the Edo election situation room.

He emphasised that the party will also work hard next year to unseat the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra and expand its influence in the southeast.

Ganduje noted that the APC will apply the same winning strategy from Edo to secure victories in the upcoming Ondo and Anambra governorship elections.

He stressed that winning Anambra would benefit the Southeast, joining Imo and Ebonyi as APC-led states, thus addressing the region’s concerns over marginalization.

“We have started working to develop strategies to win these states. Next year, Anambra State will follow. Let me remind you that we have a project which we named political demarginalisation of South East geo-political zone,” he said.

“That project is also a task that must be done. We will face the south-east zone with five states. We already have 2, but 2 is too small for a big party like ours. We will face that state and see how we can recover many states in our favour.”

Ganduje explained that the APC was left with no choice but to deal the death kneel to Governor Godwin Obaseki led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to his intransigent nature.

“This exercise was a different exercise because we were competing with a sitting governor and a Governor that was one of our own before. We are children of the same father but different mothers. When you have such a contest, it is always keen.

“We didn’t part well, we parted in pieces when he left.  And the fight continued till yesterday when we were able to bring him down. You can see why we were exchanging blows, and wrestling in a civilized contest.

“So defeating the governor was a task that must be done. He said it was a “do or die affair”.  But we said no! Our own is “do and succeed” because if u die what’s the essence of success? We did the fight and we succeeded.”
