APC receives more PDP defectors in Cross River

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Francis Effiom, along with many of his supporters, have switched allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Calabar Municipal Local Government Area.

One of the defectors from the Ward-8 Chairman, Bernard Iso, stated that their move was intended to contribute positively to Governor Bassey Otu’s administration, rather than detract from it.

He said: “This decision is predicated on what is so obvious. The governor of Cross River State Prince Bassey Otu has shown capacity and willingness to touch the lives of the people. I am talking about my ward Ward 8, Ikot Ansa, Calabar Municipal Local Government Council.

“Within the first year that Senator Bassey Otu became a governor, he had fixed two major roads in my community. One is the road leading to the highway through zone 6 to the NPC depot, to the port side via the industrial Park where you have the bulk of the tank farms in Calabar.

“That road used to be almost inaccessible until Prince Bassey Edet Otu became governor. Today if you drive through that road, it has become a dual carriageway from Murtala Mohammed Highway to the Calabar River where it terminates.

“On the Eastern flank of our community, the Ndidem Usang Iso Bolivat, where the road began, starting from our community. The first phase of the road, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has just commissioned that road, despite spending only one year in office. Our local community road at Asim Itah Street, which had been abandoned for some decades, Prince Bassey Edet Otu had fixed it.

He further stated: “At that point what else can we do? Even though we refused to allow him to win in our ward in the last elections? But we in the PDP sat down and said, it would be unfair for us not to give him the votes in the subsequent elections that is what has informed our decision to move en masse from the PDP to APC.

“We have not come to contest the local offices with our brothers who had been on the ground all this while. We are only coming to add value and use our relationships and connections with people we know at the state and national level to attract better things to our community and ward. We are not coming to struggle with ward structure no that is not what we are looking for.”

While advising supporters who are yet to make up their minds to quit the PDP for their new party, Effiom said: “If we who are the pillars of the PDP up to the ward leader, Ntufam Bernard Iso, myself, the ward chairman of PDP Francis Asi, the entire ward structure of PDP has moved today into the APC, every other person should just flow inside.”

The defectors who sang solidarity songs, holding and raising brooms chanted the slogans of the ruling Party, and pledged their loyalty moving forward.

Poll: Kwara South APC chieftains map out winning strategies

All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders and chieftains in Kwara South have mapped out winning strategies for their candidates in the local government elections slated for Saturday.

They are confident that their chairmanship and councillorship candidates will emerge victorious at the polls.

That was the aggregate of opinion at the inauguration of 18-man canvassers for the chairmanship candidate of the party for Ifelodun Local Government in Omupo, Olufemi Yusuf.

A chieftain of APC in the local government, Olumuyiwa Dada, is bankrolling the activities of the canvassers.

Speakers said victory for the party’s candidates could only come through unity and oneness of members.

A member representing Ifelodun Constituency in the House of Assembly, AbdulGaniyu Salahudeen, urged party faithful to be in unison ahead of the election and subsequent ones.

Salahudeen, fondly referred to as AGF, who is also the chairman, Campaign Organisation of Yusuf, said his candidate would coast home to victory at the polls.

The local government APC Chairman, Abubakar Luqman, an architect, said: “We are confident that our candidates will emerge victorious at the election. This is because the canvassers being inaugurated today are capable of working for the victory of our chairmanship candidate and others.

“I urge all of us at the local government to settle our differences and put the interest of our local government above other interests. Let us chart a new course for the local government.

“I therefore implore the canvassers to work with the existing ward coordinators for the success of our party.”

Dada said the agenda of the gathering was to work for the victory of the chairmanship candidate and other candidates at the polls.

    …says Tinubu’s policies are well-intended

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Sunday Okoro, has urged Nigerians to adopt a positive outlook regarding the nation’s current economic challenges.

In a recent press statement, Okoro acknowledged that while some of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies may seem stringent, they are designed to steer the country out of its economic difficulties.

He expressed confidence that Tinubu, prioritizing the welfare and interests of the people, will employ necessary measures to guide the nation in the right direction.

Okoro emphasised that the benefits of President Tinubu’s policies will soon become apparent, urging Nigerians to be patient as the administration works to implement reforms that will reposition the country.

He called for a collective effort from all citizens, emphasising that sacrifice, resilience, and unity are essential for national progress.

The statement read in part: “A time is coming, and it is closer than ever when Nigeria will rise again to reclaim its greatness. The strength, resilience, and hope that define us as a people will bring a new dawn for our beloved nation. But this future will not arrive by itself—our collective responsibility is to make it happen. The current policies of President Tinubu may look harsh now but it is meant to reposition the country. He means well for the citizenry.

“Leaders and stakeholders, we all have crucial roles in this journey. We must stand together, shoulder-to-shoulder, and embrace the duty we owe to our country, our children, and future generations.

“It starts with a change of mindset. We have been blessed with unique talents and skills, gifts from God that we must practically utilise to rebuild this great land.

“Whether in business, education, innovation, or leadership, we are called upon to make a difference. No effort is too small and no contribution is insignificant. Together, we can transform Nigeria into a nation that stands tall on the global stage, where justice, equity and opportunity abound.

“Now, more than ever, we must unite as one people. It is high time we unequivocally reject tribalism, nepotism, crimes, and corruption. These are the adversaries of progress, sowing division and hindering the greatness within our borders.

“We cannot afford to let these forces shape our future any longer. The time has come to combat them with unyielding determination, to repudiate the things that tear us apart, and to embrace what unites us as Nigerians.

“As we strive towards this vision, we must also commit to fortifying the democratic institutions that underpin our nation. Let us bolster the systems that safeguard our rights and freedoms—the foundations that bind us. In doing so, we will ensure Nigeria remains resilient and prosperous for generations.

“The journey to a greater Nigeria requires all of us. Let us remember that we are not alone in this endeavour. We are stronger together and will build a nation that reflects the values, integrity, and greatness we all believe in.

“May God bless Nigeria, and may we never waver in our pursuit of a brighter future. Let us hold onto hope, for it is the beacon that will guide us to the Nigeria we all dream of.”

Edo governorship election: Shettima, Ganduje,Oshiomhole, govs rally for APC candidate

    • VP vows Okpebholo will deliver as governor

Vice President Kashim Shettima yesterday made a case for the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer in next Saturday’s off-cycle governorship election in Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, saying he is the ideal candidate to lead the state.

Addressing party supporters at the APC mega rally held at the Sports Complex of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Ugbowo Main Campus, Vice President Shettima said Okpenholo was endowed with strategic thinking, compassion, and ability to connect with the people.

Edo State, according to him, needs a leader who can rally its citizens, listen to their concerns and lead with humility.

He described Okpebholo as a man of the people who feels the pulse of Edo’s citizens, understands their needs, and has a story to tell.

Shettima expressed confidence that Okpebholo and his running mate, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, would complement each other and bring a positive transformation to governance in Edo State.

He praised their humility and grassroots politicking, assuring that they will redefine and reshape the state’s governance for the better.

VP Shettima noted that the APC candidate was most qualified to assume the leadership of the state.

He continued: “What Edo State needs is a strategic thinker, a builder, a man of the people, a man who can rally the great people of Edo State.

“Edo State needs a man who will open his doors to the people, hear their cries and lead with the fear of God.

“Edo does not need a man who knows it all. Edo needs a man who feels the pulse of his people, knows where it hurts and has a story to tell in terms of where he is coming from.

“Edo needs a compassionate leader, one who is in tune with the yearnings and aspirations of Edo people. Edo needs a leader with the tenacity and knack for radical change and influence.

“Let me sum it up by quoting Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States, who said ‘The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things; he is the one that gets people to do the greatest things.

”Therefore, in Senator Monday Okpebholo and his deputy, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, we have two gentlemen who will walk the talk. They will complement each other. The humility that has brought them thus far will also manifest in their governing of Edo State.

“With these two grassroots politicians and distinguished public servants, Edo will witness a positive redefining and reshaping of governance,” he said.

He reminded the people of the state that despite diversities in backgrounds, their expectations are the same.

“Whether you are a civil servant or a trader, whether you are Esan or Afemai, whether you are a Christian or a Muslim, whether you are young or old, male or female, our expectations are the same.

“We all seek the same thing – a functional Edo State, a state that can provide opportunities for all of you to thrive.

“What unites us the most is not our differences but our collective desire for a nation that works, a state that meets our needs,” Senator Shettima told the mammoth crowd at the campaign ground.

In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged the people of Edo to vote for the party in order to reap more dividends of democracy.

He said N212 billion has already been appropriated for the reconstruction of the Auchi-Benin Road, which he said when completed, will boost economic activities in Edo State.

On his part, the National Chairman of the APC, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, said the people of Edo State have suffered in the last eight years and they need to be liberated.

He declared that Monday Okpebholo is the right person to lead the state to the promise land.

Ganduje said: “In the last eight years, Edo State has suffered and the state is now downgraded in terms of infrastructure, security and general development.

“Benin should have the outlook of a modern city, but today, it is looking for a person who will uplift the state. Monday is the person to do so.”

The Chairman of the National Campaign Council of the party in Edo, Senator Bassey Otu, the Governor of Cross River state, declared that Edo needed a change, with Okpebholo to ensure good governance.

The APC National Chairman later received decampees from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including a former Senator, the governorship candidate of Action Alliance for Edo State and the Organizing Secretary of the Labour Party in the state.

On his part, former Governor of Edo State, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, praised the humility, loyalty and sense of judgment of Vice President Shettima.

Oshiomhole decried the poor performance of the outgoing Governor of Edo State, saying the state had not witnessed development in the last eight years.

He stated: “Governance is about development; our roads and other infrastructure are dilapidated. Education has suffered a lot. Because the state does not have a State Universal Basic Education Board yet, the Governor has been benefiting from the Universal Basic Education Commission’s funds.

“Our future has been compromised by Obaseki. People of my age and the younger ones have not forgotten what is called “plan well”, a savings scheme championed by the Asue, which defrauded the people.”

On his part, the APC governorship candidate, Senator Okpebholo appealed for support to change the tide in Edo State.

“We will give loans to our farmers through cooperatives; we will also give soft loans to market women. We will employ over 5,000 teachers within my first 100 days in office. We will build health centers across the 192 wards in Edo and we will declare a state of emergency on education,” he promised.

Other Dignitaries that graced the campaign rally were the Governors of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq; Imo State, Hope Uzodinma; Ondo State, Dapo Abiodun; Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule; Kogi State, Usman Ododo, and Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as well as members of the National Assembly from Edo State, and party stalwarts, among others.

Shettima had on his arrival in the city paid a courtesy visit on the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II.

Hold Obaseki responsible if Edo poll turns violent, APC Youths warn

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth League has condemned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for declining to sign the peace accord ahead of the Edo State gubernatorial election.

National President of the All Progressive Youth League, Comrade Olamide Lawal, in a statement he personally signed, expressed disappointment and concern over PDP’s refusal to be part of a peace pact aimed at re-assuring the electorate of a non-violent exercise.

According to him, “We are shocked that the PDP has refused to sign the peace accord usually signed by political parties participating in elections in Nigeria. This indicates a lack of commitment to peaceful elections and a potential resort to violence.

“We urge the PDP to reconsider their decision, retrace their steps in the interest of Nigeria’s democracy and sign the peace accord forthwith. We also call on security agencies to ensure a peaceful and credible election.”

According to Lawal, “The youths in Edo State will not hesitate to hold Governor Godwin Obaseki accountable for any breach of peace during the election.

“We will not allow him to use his exalted office to cause chaos and destruction before he leaves office. Regrettably, Governor Obaseki is also a beneficiary of this peace accord.

“Why he asked his party not to be part of a peace-assuring process is unequivocally an attempt to jeopardize the efforts of members of this peace accord in the Heartbeat of the nation”

He appealed to other stakeholders in the country to step up their game by ensuring that the forthcoming election is peaceful.

“We call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and civil society organisations to intervene and prevail on the PDP to re-assure the electorate of a peaceful election in words and actions.

“The APC National Youth League is committed to supporting a peaceful and credible electoral process in Edo State, and we will not allow anyone to compromise that because our members across all the 18 local governments of Edo State have mobilised massively for this election, and any move to truncate their efforts via violence by PDP will be resisted,” he stressed.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has pulled out of the Peace Accord between contending political parties ahead of the September 21 governorship election.

The APC’s decision comes just hours after Governor Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed doubts about his party signing the accord, citing a lack of trust in both the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Obaseki made the statement while meeting with the Chairman of the Presidential Peace Committee, former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar.

At a press conference held at the party secretariat, the state APC spokesperson, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, explained that several factors influenced their decision to withdraw from the Peace Accords.

He said among the reasons was the lack of progress in the investigation into the murder of police inspector Onuh Akor, who was killed along Airport Road over two months ago.

He added that despite assurances from the former Commissioner of Police, Funsho, who claimed that the command had the suspects’ names, no arrests or prosecutions have occurred.

Tenebe said instead of being arrested, Governor Godwin Obaseki is allegedly keeping them in the Government House.

Tenebe said: “This failure of the police has emboldened the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his Peoples Democratic Party to attack members of our political party at rally grounds and in their private business premises ceaselessly.”

Plateau State House of Assembly Speaker Gabriel Dewan yesterday swore in the remaining five lawmakers of main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) into the legislative Assembly.

The main opposition lawmakers took their oath on the floor of the Assembly in Jos, the state capital.

But the state chapter of the APC expressed anger at Dewan for delaying the inauguration for eight months.

In a statement in Jos by its Acting State Publicity Secretary Shittu Bamayi, APC said: “The Speaker of the Plateau House of Assembly, Gabriel Dewan, has climbed down his high horse by swearing in the remaining five members of the House.

“For nearly eight months, the Speaker and his benefactor, in a fascist and autocratic manner, deprived the constituencies of the just sworn- in members their constitutional rights because of some self-serving interests.

“Prior to today’s (Wednesday’s) event, Gabriel Dewan has boisterously, at any given opportunity, bragged about his ill-conceived, retrogressive and oppressive instincts in sacrificing the constitutional rights of thousands of people of the state on the altar of the selfish aggrandisement of a few.

“Dewan has unfortunately been carried away by the ephemeral euphoria and the aura of the Office of Speaker to extend that he places the interest of his benefactor above any other consideration and the constitution.”
